Benito Skinner
Hi.
Jake Shane
Surprise. I love a surprise Friday episode. And today we have on Benito Skinner and Mary Beth Barone, two of my favorite people in the entire world and the stars of the new Amazon prime original Overcompensating, which if you haven't seen, you have to go watch it now. It is unbelievable. It's based off of Benny's real life coming out story in college. It's funny, it's moving, and the music is incredible. It really is just amazing. I watched it like all in one day. It was so fudgeing funny. And you know, I love Benny and Mary Beth and I love Ride, which is one of my favorite podcasts, which is their podcast. And we've had them both separately on Therapist. So to have them both together was amazing and just so funny and perfect. And I'm so excited for you guys to listen to it. To see if I'm coming to a city near you, go to passthatpost.com and click Live with Jake Shane. And to submit a Tell me what's wrong. Go to passthepus.com Click Tell Me what's wrong. And leave a name and number if you're feeling fancy. Okay. Enjoy the episode. Love you. Hi, welcome back to therapuss. Today we have two fan favorites combined into one. This is Ride X therapists Mary Beth Barone and Benito Skinner. Hey.
Benito Skinner
The best day of my life.
Mary Beth Barone
Thank you for having me.
Jake Shane
Oh, I mean, like, I couldn't be more happy that you guys are both back.
Mary Beth Barone
I did full glam. They said, you're not allowed to wear a gown to a podcast. And I said, watch me.
Benito Skinner
She goes, a lot of people watch this podcast.
Jake Shane
I thank you.
Benito Skinner
Yeah. But she is in a full gal.
Mary Beth Barone
Connor Ives, thanks so much for providing.
Jake Shane
Connor Ives.
Benito Skinner
Yeah, we did full hair and makeup, too.
Mary Beth Barone
Well, isn't that what everyone's doing?
Jake Shane
Yeah, everyone's doing glam for everything. You guys watch Housewives?
Mary Beth Barone
No.
Benito Skinner
Well, don't lie.
Mary Beth Barone
I heard you almost lie there.
Benito Skinner
Don't do this.
Mary Beth Barone
You're about to say, yeah, I know.
Benito Skinner
You'Re not going to do this.
Mary Beth Barone
Don't watch Bravo.
Jake Shane
I know you're not gonna do this.
Benito Skinner
In front of Jake. Stop it. I don't watch that. But here's my thing. I keep watching people on this, on therapists and some of these straight guys. I'm like. A little bronzer would have helped.
Jake Shane
Yeah, agreed.
Benito Skinner
Like concealer.
Jake Shane
Yeah, agreed.
Benito Skinner
Come on.
Jake Shane
Like, I have a pimple right now on my lip.
Benito Skinner
I don't see it.
Jake Shane
Oh, thank you so much. I called my friend yesterday, and I was, like, finally got over the hump of it.
Benito Skinner
I literally. I can't believe you're calling that a pimple.
Jake Shane
Well, she goes, do you have herpes?
Mary Beth Barone
Who are your friends?
Benito Skinner
Yeah. Wait, excuse me. And you go, what if I did?
Jake Shane
Yeah, what if I did?
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah, because we're trying to normalize.
Benito Skinner
Do people not have herpes?
Jake Shane
No, everyone has herpes.
Mary Beth Barone
I think a lot of people.
Jake Shane
I think a lot of people.
Mary Beth Barone
I mean, not me.
Benito Skinner
No, I know. Well, it's disgusting. You can't imagine the cold sores I get.
Jake Shane
No, I know.
Benito Skinner
They're, like, culture shattering.
Mary Beth Barone
I need sty culture to die down for a while.
Benito Skinner
Oh, everyone's gonna.
Mary Beth Barone
No one cares about your split die. No one cares about except you. And I can't even see it. So stop.
Jake Shane
Have you guys ever had a sty?
Benito Skinner
I saw a sty last night. That I could see it. No.
Mary Beth Barone
Someone if. You know, because you're. You're complicit in style culture. If you're going to call it out, then you're complicit.
Benito Skinner
Well, that's my. We talked about sweat shaming last time.
Jake Shane
Last time I was here with Jake.
Benito Skinner
It was just us, and we talked about sweat shaming. And it's like, if you're going to do that, like, then I hope. Hey, you better. You better never sweat. I better never get it Not.
Jake Shane
What is that dirt in your eye?
Mary Beth Barone
See, even talking about it right now.
Jake Shane
It'S like we're giving it the problem. Yeah, we're giving it judgment.
Benito Skinner
But when we shot the poster for overcompensating, I had a sty that was so large, it was full. And I don't know if this is awful to say it just. It gave Quasimodo, but I don't.
Mary Beth Barone
Why would that be awful?
Benito Skinner
I'm always bringing up Hunchback Notre Dame.
Mary Beth Barone
It's almost like we need to watch it just to, like, I never.
Benito Skinner
A bus. I gotta watch it.
Mary Beth Barone
We have to go home.
Benito Skinner
Have you. Have you seen it?
Jake Shane
No, never.
Benito Skinner
Okay, which. What? What did you grow up with.
Jake Shane
I grew up with, like, what was your.
Mary Beth Barone
Like, Sex in the City?
Jake Shane
Like, a bunch of.
Benito Skinner
Because I grew up with Scrubs and. Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
The Office.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Jake Shane
I grew up. You know, I've never seen the Office.
Benito Skinner
That's. Okay, Wait, just. Dear Media Clip that. Sorry. That's it.
Jake Shane
It is okay, right? Like, of course it is. Thank you.
Mary Beth Barone
Get around to it. Maybe you won't.
Benito Skinner
I haven't seen Game of Thrones and people, it's like, you know, we're gonna get to it. I saw you almost. You almost cut.
Jake Shane
No, because. And then I realized, like, that's just me, like, trying to be something I'm not because I wasn't that passionate about it.
Benito Skinner
Like, imagine if we cared that you hadn't seen. You know what I mean? You know, I don't do your. Could it matter less?
Mary Beth Barone
Oh, could it matter less?
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
You haven't seen the Office.
Jake Shane
No. I guess.
Mary Beth Barone
Ask yourself that.
Jake Shane
It really couldn't.
Mary Beth Barone
Next time it pops in your head, could it matter? Could anything matter less?
Jake Shane
And, like, not to be a hater, but, like, I haven't. Do you. Have you guys seen the Office?
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah, like, the first few seasons. But I'm not like, a Die Hard, you know, I haven't done a re.
Benito Skinner
Watch, but it was. It did give me comfort in high school. I did, like, because it was before 30 Rock, if I'm right. Like, it was the, like, NBC, like, comedy Thursdays. And I do remember that being, you know, a big deal. I had a big social skate calendar. I had a lot of. Invited to a ton of stuff, so that was big for me. But, yeah, I haven't seen it since. But I know it's, you know, a comfort watch.
Jake Shane
Were you guys like Glee? I have been thinking that the entire time.
Benito Skinner
You almost let me do this whole thing.
Jake Shane
I'm so grateful for what you see.
Mary Beth Barone
Which one of us actually fixed it. Even. Even just. I wasn't even gonna say anything.
Jake Shane
That was so fix it.
Benito Skinner
She would do anything to run this room right now. To sit there. That's.
Jake Shane
What do you want to.
Mary Beth Barone
No, it's okay.
Jake Shane
Okay. Are you sure?
Mary Beth Barone
I like you at the helm.
Jake Shane
Okay.
Benito Skinner
I agree. I feel safe.
Jake Shane
Do you guys watch Glee?
Benito Skinner
Yes.
Mary Beth Barone
I didn't watch Glee.
Benito Skinner
She hasn't seen Glee.
Jake Shane
That's crazy.
Benito Skinner
So.
Mary Beth Barone
But.
Benito Skinner
But what did I say when. When Terry, my boyfriend, dies.
Mary Beth Barone
Passes away.
Benito Skinner
Yes. And. I don't know. Whoever you decide to be with, jury's out. When they pass on, we will come together and watch Lost.
Mary Beth Barone
Glee. Glee.
Jake Shane
Okay. Never seen Loss Same.
Benito Skinner
Okay, so that's going to be like, our big thing.
Mary Beth Barone
I love this podcast. Just being us, talking about shows we haven't seen. Right, but that's what people want to hear.
Jake Shane
You know what? I have seen overcompensate. I did.
Benito Skinner
I did.
Mary Beth Barone
You watched all of it?
Jake Shane
No.
Benito Skinner
2. Not yet.
Mary Beth Barone
Some people got all of it.
Jake Shane
I'm on episode three. Because I've been working all day, but I'm on episode three.
Benito Skinner
Okay.
Jake Shane
I'm on episode three.
Benito Skinner
It gets really shot at.
Jake Shane
Invited to a secret society.
Benito Skinner
Oh, it's on. You saw. Yeah.
Jake Shane
You're Mr. Shady.
Benito Skinner
That's Mr. Shady. That's Ms. Shady.
Mary Beth Barone
Mr. Shady's here. We haven't even introduced. Mr.
Benito Skinner
Slim Shady's in the corner.
Mary Beth Barone
Do you want to say hi?
Jake Shane
Yeah, come say hi. Come.
Mary Beth Barone
Hello.
Benito Skinner
There he is. I don't have bronzer on, but I love the office.
Mary Beth Barone
So. Then get out of the shot.
Benito Skinner
Why do you think you're not on camera? Yes.
Mary Beth Barone
He's seen all the shows.
Benito Skinner
Thank you for being there last night.
Jake Shane
Are you kidding?
Benito Skinner
You look so handsome. I love your leather.
Jake Shane
I saw the one Getty photo of me. New worst photo of me just dropped.
Benito Skinner
Well, okay. So the yellow background had a weird. I will say. And it's so fun when those drop because it really can be like, I can't believe I look like that. I didn't realize, like, my crow's feet were hitting in a way that almost felt like mask.
Jake Shane
Like, what's a crow's foot?
Benito Skinner
Oh, and there it is. I guess we won't talk about it.
Mary Beth Barone
Better if we don't.
Benito Skinner
I guess it's. If you smile and then this goes like this.
Jake Shane
I think that's beautiful.
Benito Skinner
Would that ever not do that?
Jake Shane
Wait, no. You're an actor. Like, you need that. Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
You need to be expressive.
Benito Skinner
Imagine if we weren't. You don't have to be expressive.
Mary Beth Barone
I know, but we. Because all my lines are just. Benny, you look like. If one line that got cut that I want to say finally here is. You look like a rapist.
Jake Shane
Cut.
Benito Skinner
Well, it's so funny. I. It wasn't even a note. But I think we just realized in testing, we're like, she does say rape and 9, 11 within like 10 minutes of the show. Let's take a beat. We'll do it later. Maybe season two, if we get it.
Mary Beth Barone
And the first scene that also got cut.
Benito Skinner
Yes. So. Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
But they're later in this.
Jake Shane
Okay. Thank God. Yeah.
Benito Skinner
She's my muse.
Jake Shane
Yeah.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
My guy takes care of me.
Benito Skinner
Of course. Of Course. Well, you do, but I don't believe that you looked bad last night. Because what I saw was a gorgeous man who looked.
Jake Shane
Thank you. It must have been the angle. I looked like if a tree stump had a baby.
Benito Skinner
Do not. I'm sorry. It is the. The yellow. Yellow is a tough color. Can I just say I liked it, though. It looked. Thank you.
Mary Beth Barone
Wait, it was a red carpet pick or inside the party?
Jake Shane
Oh, it was carpet.
Benito Skinner
Okay. Yeah, the yellow was bouncing off. I had an interesting color vibe to my face, too. I will just say.
Mary Beth Barone
I'll say I looked good. That's all I'm gonna say.
Jake Shane
You all looked amazing.
Benito Skinner
I've been sent so many videos today of Mary Beth dancing with gay men, and in a way that I've never seen you move. It's body rolls.
Mary Beth Barone
People don't know that I can dance because I don't really do it that much.
Jake Shane
I've never seen you dance. I've actually never seen you party.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah, I got drunk last night. Oh. We haven't even talked about what happened to me this morning.
Benito Skinner
Are you really. Wait, are you really not even gonna say hi to the bump on her head? Jake.
Jake Shane
Wait, where.
Benito Skinner
We have a third? We have a third.
Jake Shane
Jesus is big.
Mary Beth Barone
I know. Wait, you know when Miranda Priestley's like, did you fall and smack your head on the pavement? That was me this morning. So I got up out of bed. It. When it was the dark of night, and I was. I felt so sick. So I got up to get some water, and then I was gonna go throw up, but on my way to throw up, I got lightheaded. I fell to my knees, and next thing I know.
Benito Skinner
Save me my dog, baby.
Mary Beth Barone
Next thing I know, I woke up and my head was three throbbing. And I had a huge bump and I must have just, like, passed out on the back floor. So then I went back to bed, laid down, my head's throbbing more. And then I did throw up three times. And so now I'm here.
Benito Skinner
It's hard because, like, my brain immediately just pictures, all of it. And I, like, want to see it.
Jake Shane
Yeah, no, I wish that.
Mary Beth Barone
I wish that there was CCTV of it. I would love to know what happened. No, I was in a baggy T shirt and my Calvin Klein.
Benito Skinner
Great.
Mary Beth Barone
Nothing comes between calm, of course. Yeah, of course.
Jake Shane
You know, everyone's fainting these days. My friend just fainted after she got her titties done and she got revealed.
Benito Skinner
Faint.
Jake Shane
And then.
Mary Beth Barone
Why?
Benito Skinner
She went.
Jake Shane
Well, she. It was a reduction. And she. They unwrapped her faint. And then my other best friend, we were at. We were at a restaurant, and they had, like, an upstairs nightclub, and she was in the bathroom and she fainted, and I went to go help her, and someone knocked on the door, and it was the girls bathroom, and they.
Mary Beth Barone
Shouldn'T be in the women's room.
Benito Skinner
I.
Jake Shane
That's what they said, too.
Benito Skinner
That's not for you, man. Ever. That's not for you.
Jake Shane
They grabbed me by my collar and pushed me down the stairs and threw me on the street.
Benito Skinner
Whoa.
Mary Beth Barone
You got assaulted?
Jake Shane
And I thought it was a drunk patron, so I looked at the hostess and I was like, help me. Help. And he was like, just listen to him. Just listen. Just do what he says.
Benito Skinner
He go, submit.
Jake Shane
Yeah, like, submit. And I was like, what? What? And he was like, grabbing me and tossing me.
Mary Beth Barone
They would never do that at La Feretti F. The Italian restaurant in Overcompensation.
Benito Skinner
Right? This was one. Yeah. So I was thinking about, like, college towns and how all of them have, like, some restaurant that every student is like, it's so nice there. But it is the one thing where I just kept. Like, it never felt real. Like, the names. And everyone was like, you've gone too far. I think at one point it was Giovanni Chiprian. Yeah. They were like, that is so stupid. But it's Laforetti, so I wouldn't say that's less dumb, but they would never treat you like that. And I would say, bathrooms. Anyone go anywhere, anyone's right.
Jake Shane
That's what I thought, too.
Benito Skinner
Enjoy it. Yeah. Oh, hey, Addie.
Mary Beth Barone
So what else?
Benito Skinner
He's, like, filming you.
Jake Shane
I love it. You such a big fan.
Mary Beth Barone
So how are you?
Jake Shane
I'm. I'm. How are you guys?
Mary Beth Barone
No, I asked you.
Jake Shane
Okay.
Benito Skinner
Hey, nice try.
Mary Beth Barone
Stop deflecting. I was trying yourself up to love.
Jake Shane
I'm good. I cut out dairy.
Benito Skinner
Whoa.
Jake Shane
I cut out dairy. And I felt so seen by you the other day, by the way, when I.
Mary Beth Barone
When I chugged oatmeal.
Jake Shane
And I did it for as well.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah.
Jake Shane
I'm not like, super lactose into it tolerant.
Mary Beth Barone
It's just like. It's a bad vibe for me.
Jake Shane
So I'm like, the worst.
Mary Beth Barone
Be dairy free.
Benito Skinner
I can't. It's just. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna have.
Jake Shane
You're gonna have it?
Benito Skinner
I think I'm gonna have it forever. I think wheat, though, is not sitting great because I had. I had two pieces of pizza last gluten and last night it was. I didn't feel good.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah.
Jake Shane
I hate pizza personally.
Mary Beth Barone
What?
Benito Skinner
Whoa.
Mary Beth Barone
Have you talked about this publicly before?
Jake Shane
Earlier today.
Benito Skinner
You hate pizza?
Jake Shane
Hate it.
Mary Beth Barone
Why?
Jake Shane
You know, I don't really know. It's just like if I have to pick between pizza and pasta and it's like I'm not gonna have both in one sit, I'm gonna go with pasta every time.
Benito Skinner
Wow.
Jake Shane
And that's what I ride for, personally.
Benito Skinner
Oh, yeah. Wait, what do you ride for?
Jake Shane
Okay. Oh, wait, can someone go? Can someone go first?
Mary Beth Barone
Oh, we have to do rides here?
Jake Shane
I. You do.
Benito Skinner
Oh. Oh, my God.
Jake Shane
Well, today I ride for Overcompensating, which just came out on Amazon prime and it is fantastic. And everyone should go watch it now.
Mary Beth Barone
Thank you for saying that. I guess what I ride for.
Benito Skinner
I ride for you at the Webbies. That was fabulous.
Jake Shane
Was it?
Benito Skinner
I was fabulous. I think.
Mary Beth Barone
Was there a video? I didn't catch any videos.
Jake Shane
Don't worry.
Mary Beth Barone
You didn't post video, did you?
Benito Skinner
You won. Correct.
Mary Beth Barone
They gave you Gay Guy of the Year.
Benito Skinner
God, you won Gay Guy of the Year?
Mary Beth Barone
Sorry. Better luck next year, Benny. Yeah, well, every year the Time magazine does Gay Guy of the Year and Benny got it last year, so they do that.
Benito Skinner
Yeah, totally. Of course.
Jake Shane
That's amazing.
Benito Skinner
Yeah. It meant the world.
Mary Beth Barone
It was really cool.
Benito Skinner
Yeah. There can only be one, and it was me last year.
Jake Shane
I also ride for like, you know.
Mary Beth Barone
Just say it.
Jake Shane
I'm. I'm really trying to think because I. I've been waiting for this moment for a really long time. We. Are you guys going to ride for something after me?
Benito Skinner
Yes, of course.
Jake Shane
Okay. I ride for. Okay.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah, yeah.
Benito Skinner
It can come.
Jake Shane
It does it just come to you?
Mary Beth Barone
I'll just say one.
Jake Shane
Okay.
Mary Beth Barone
I ride for Nepo. Babies dating each other, then if they have kids. That's second generation Nepo baby.
Jake Shane
You know who's Napo baby generation?
Benito Skinner
Right now? Make up the family.
Jake Shane
Romy Mars.
Benito Skinner
Oh, who she was.
Jake Shane
She's Napo baby. Final boss, great grandpa, Francis Ford Coppola.
Benito Skinner
But is she dating an apple baby?
Jake Shane
No, no, no.
Benito Skinner
We want to set her up.
Mary Beth Barone
No, she's too young to have a boyfriend. I think she's a girlfriend or non binary partner.
Jake Shane
Right.
Mary Beth Barone
I still think too young. I don't think women should date until they're 32.
Benito Skinner
Hey, I agree.
Mary Beth Barone
They're not ready.
Jake Shane
Exactly. I still have never had a boyfriend.
Benito Skinner
That's insane.
Mary Beth Barone
Why do you think that?
Benito Skinner
Well, you're on tour, that's why.
Jake Shane
No, I was so close to one the other night. Oh, I can't.
Mary Beth Barone
The other night.
Benito Skinner
I love in one night you could have a boyfriend. Totally. It was so funny. The. The. I got a headline after that. I had dissociated so many times while making the show, and I'm like, that was one of the first headlines about overcompensating. And I was like, cool. I love that. A lot of.
Jake Shane
How could you not? What was it like filming?
Benito Skinner
Oh, my God, it was so much fun. We. It really did feel like college. And it was so. But, like, so surreal because I had written some of those scripts like, six years ago, right. So at times, or I guess like 5ish. And so I'd be in the scene with them, and then all of a sudden my brain would be like, whoa, this is so crazy. Like, I've pictured this for so long. Seeing Marybeth as my sister for the first time. I was like, this is so weird.
Jake Shane
I love the video. Did you. Did you or did you not post a video when she found out she was playing your sister?
Benito Skinner
We.
Mary Beth Barone
We posted a picture.
Jake Shane
Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
We were at dinner together.
Jake Shane
It was beautiful.
Benito Skinner
It was crazy because that was like. Right? It was like, Mary Beth has been confirmed. And I just. Oh, my God.
Mary Beth Barone
We were right next to the Bowery Hotel.
Benito Skinner
I don't think I've ever. It's like, probably a top 10. Like, you know when your brain just really hits serotonin and the dopamine and just everything's firing. It's just exciting because that doesn't really ever happen. I have never been so happy in my life. I was so. We.
Mary Beth Barone
We levitated.
Jake Shane
Did you cry?
Mary Beth Barone
We cried. Yeah.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
It was special.
Jake Shane
That's beautiful.
Mary Beth Barone
It was really a beautiful moment.
Jake Shane
Do you.
Benito Skinner
So fun.
Jake Shane
There's so many good sinks in the show.
Benito Skinner
Thank you so much.
Jake Shane
Yeah, like music things.
Mary Beth Barone
Oh, that's not what they're called.
Benito Skinner
No, but. But to me, I went, okay, I guess. Yeah, I think they might be called that.
Mary Beth Barone
They're called needle drops.
Benito Skinner
Wait, okay, people.
Jake Shane
Yeah, but, like, when you say but.
Benito Skinner
To me, a needle drop is kind of like a mic.
Mary Beth Barone
Like, I'm like, I know, but that's just the. I mean, that's just the business.
Jake Shane
Yeah, right.
Mary Beth Barone
No, I like better.
Jake Shane
Well, a sink.
Benito Skinner
I love Jake over there. I love the sinks.
Jake Shane
I know. I felt like Jimmy Fallon.
Mary Beth Barone
I thought you like actual.
Benito Skinner
Thank you. They're honestly, so many of them are for you. It really like, they felt like they.
Jake Shane
Were personally for me.
Benito Skinner
Of course.
Jake Shane
Do you have a favorite? Either of you? And you too. Chime in.
Mary Beth Barone
Ay, yeah. Your favorite needle drop.
Benito Skinner
Everything is embarrassing.
Jake Shane
You guys do everything is embarrassing. I love that song. I met her once.
Benito Skinner
She's incredible.
Jake Shane
Yeah, she's awesome.
Benito Skinner
That album, Nighttime, My time was like. That was one of those things where I just. I was kind of creeping out of the closet. But I'm like, I just. At a certain point, I'm going to love this.
Jake Shane
Right?
Benito Skinner
You know what I mean? Like, I can't lie. Like, I'm going to go to her fucking concert to see this. And I went and, like, me telling all my friends, like, I'm picturing us, like on the metro in D.C. and I'm like, you guys are going to love this. This album got like, you know, blah, blah, blah on Pitchfork. Like, I was really right.
Jake Shane
Oh, you were a Pitchfork guy?
Benito Skinner
Well, of course.
Mary Beth Barone
Was this before or after you did skydive or hang gliding?
Benito Skinner
I parasailed.
Jake Shane
Oh, where?
Benito Skinner
Oh, no. I hang glided. I hang glided. So I. I. For attention. I hang gl. Cause I was in love with this straight guy. So I was like, hell, yeah. I'll hang glide. And thinking about it now, it was the scariest thing I've ever done. I did it in Switzerland when I was abroad. I literally. I only had, like, a little bit of money and I spent all of it to do it. And I'm up there and they were these like, crazy Australian guys who do it, I mean, 15 times a day. Yeah. What I didn't know is that it's. I guess. I don't know. We don't fact check on our pods, so I assume.
Jake Shane
Why not?
Benito Skinner
I can assume this is a safe space, but I can only assume that it. What I found out later is it's the most dangerous one of all of them. Like, the most complications happen from this because it really fully depends on wind.
Jake Shane
Right?
Benito Skinner
So. And right before we went.
Mary Beth Barone
This is making my stomach hurt.
Benito Skinner
It was crazy. And you literally jump off a cliff with like a kite type thing or whatever that's called. But. And these Aussies were literally lunatics.
Jake Shane
Like, what do you mean?
Benito Skinner
They were in. And they go, I can't do an accent. But they were like. At one point they filmed the whole thing. So I have footage of it that I can't look at because it's so. But at one point, they. He did like a dip where you do a nose dive. And on my face. I was so depressed at the time. No, you can't even imagine. I literally. There was no shift. I just went like, I am so. Like, I don't care anymore.
Jake Shane
Right.
Benito Skinner
This is how I fully thought I was going to Die as he's like, let's dive. And I was like, this is. And I think back to it and I'm like, I was so down bad. Like, it's crazy that I did that.
Jake Shane
Did you ever end up hooking up with the straight guy?
Benito Skinner
No. No. So he is straight, which is actually really powerful. So they're. Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
More than ever.
Benito Skinner
Yeah. Which is crazy. But I do think it forced me out of the closet because it's just like, oh, well, I do love a man. It's hard to tell your brain like, that you're not gay at that point.
Jake Shane
Right.
Mary Beth Barone
Like, well, you're willing to hang glide for someone.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Jake Shane
Who? Do you still keep in contact with him? Yeah.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Jake Shane
Does he know you were in love?
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Jake Shane
And isn't that amazing?
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Jake Shane
So what's up with you guys?
Benito Skinner
Well, darling, in a show, we're doing this. So we're doing this show.
Mary Beth Barone
So we're in a show.
Benito Skinner
But also, I'm just so happy to be here. I just love you.
Jake Shane
I mean, I never have.
Benito Skinner
It's just like, this is heaven. And, like, this does feel like you're on right. As well in a way.
Mary Beth Barone
Because the first space I've been in the last two weeks where I'm not freezing, by the way. So just thank you for that.
Benito Skinner
So imagine how warm.
Mary Beth Barone
Thank you for that. And thank you for not, like, for prioritizing me.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Jake Shane
It's all for you.
Benito Skinner
She would have been blue.
Mary Beth Barone
My bones have been chattering for the last.
Jake Shane
Do you get cold easily?
Mary Beth Barone
Oh, my God. Yeah. It's really hard.
Jake Shane
What do you sleep at?
Mary Beth Barone
I sleep at 72.
Benito Skinner
Oh, I'm a 68.
Jake Shane
I'm a 62.
Mary Beth Barone
That's like.
Jake Shane
Let me one up you. Not only AM I A62, I have a fan next to me. That blows on level three. It's only three levels. And then I have a mattress called an eight sleep that goes to negative 10 degrees or at negative 10. That's the level setting I'm at. And it vibrates me to wake me up.
Benito Skinner
Oh, wait, that sounds so. That feels like to go to bed with a spray tan in that bed.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah.
Benito Skinner
That's so cool. Have you gotten a spray tan ever?
Jake Shane
I mean, like, this must be kismet. I was talking about it today. Just like pizza.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Jake Shane
Did you have a spray tan all filming?
Benito Skinner
Yeah, it looks great.
Jake Shane
It looked.
Benito Skinner
I will say, every now and then a scene switches and goes, Benny went to Bora Bora. That was the joke. We were like. Because I got a fresh one on the Weekend. And then Monday was just a little bit.
Mary Beth Barone
You can't tell that much. We did take out of his first spray tan ever.
Benito Skinner
It's so fun.
Jake Shane
You got a spray tan.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
You got a bunch of spray tans.
Benito Skinner
Were you addicted? Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
I think you. You were resistant to it, but I think you kind of loved how it looked.
Benito Skinner
It looks great.
Jake Shane
Give him a mic in case he wants to chime in.
Benito Skinner
Can we get this.
Mary Beth Barone
Podcast?
Jake Shane
I know.
Mary Beth Barone
Only if you feel it's totally necessary, though.
Benito Skinner
You know, you're kind of the voice of God of this in a way. You have to get.
Jake Shane
I know.
Benito Skinner
I can't stop thinking about it, Jake. Like, I. And every time, like, are you just too busy? Actually, this. It might be that. Are you too busy? No.
Mary Beth Barone
Or are you not, like, you're not, like, opening yourself up?
Jake Shane
I don't think I'm opening myself up. Literally on physic. Physically, you know, figuratively. Yeah. I'm not. I'm like, all I want to do is have sex and I can't.
Mary Beth Barone
What's your type? Like, what's your. What are you attracted to?
Jake Shane
I. It changes on the day.
Benito Skinner
Totally.
Mary Beth Barone
That's tough.
Jake Shane
It changes on the day, and that can be hard.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah.
Jake Shane
And. But my thing is, like. And I keep having, like. Can I, like, get tmi?
Benito Skinner
Yeah, of course.
Jake Shane
Having sex dreams. And I'm like, I know. Yeah.
Benito Skinner
I love that song. Sorry. I just think about it.
Jake Shane
Yeah. Oh, Mayhem. That's what I write for. Oh, so fabulous, so fabulous how that.
Benito Skinner
Girl in your head ain't real. How bad do you want me? For real? How. Think about that so consistently.
Jake Shane
I wish I went to Copacabana.
Benito Skinner
What's that?
Jake Shane
This 2 million person show. She just.
Mary Beth Barone
Oh, my God.
Benito Skinner
That makes me sick to my stomach. Yeah. That many people. I like, that actually made me so nervous.
Jake Shane
Do you wonder how they do, like, security for that?
Benito Skinner
Well, I think they don't at a certain point. For her, yes. But I think it's just kind of.
Mary Beth Barone
Like they have, like, the sections so that people don't get trampled. And that's when professionals are organizing something and they're like, we've done, like, the math on, like, body weight and, like, what each section can hold. And that's like, thought and care was put into that, you know, so people don't get smushed.
Benito Skinner
She is a rep for Cocoa Cabana.
Mary Beth Barone
Amazing job. And they gave Lady Gaga such an incredible opportunity. Opportunity. But it's only because they were organized. Like, organization matters.
Jake Shane
It does.
Benito Skinner
It really does. It really does.
Mary Beth Barone
Physical Safety is important. You know that post hang gliding. Of course it's important.
Jake Shane
It is important.
Benito Skinner
Coachella, I thought was tough at times, I just get really. It's. I get really claustrophobic, and then at times they're. All of a sudden, you're herded with, like, a hundred people in the same little spot. And that's where I'm like, whoa, whoa, whoa. No, no, I can't do this.
Jake Shane
Hotel is not a music festival.
Mary Beth Barone
Whoa.
Jake Shane
It's not.
Mary Beth Barone
Speak on that.
Jake Shane
That's. It's not. It used to be.
Mary Beth Barone
I went the last year it was a music festival because it was the last year. It was one weekend, and it was so good. And then the year after that, they just realized, like, how much more money they could be making. And now it's really, like, a branding opportunity.
Jake Shane
The only time I felt joy, I mean, I miss Gaga, which I'm very upset about. You'll see that show just, like, dealing with.
Mary Beth Barone
Totally.
Jake Shane
And I was like, oh, I have to go home and I'm gonna go see her in Vegas.
Benito Skinner
We say all the same things.
Jake Shane
Yeah.
Benito Skinner
So scary.
Jake Shane
How do you guys know each other again?
Mary Beth Barone
We met at a show.
Benito Skinner
Yeah, we met at a show. Comedy show. Stand up. Would you ever do stand up?
Jake Shane
Yes, you should. I don't think I'd be very good at it.
Benito Skinner
I don't.
Mary Beth Barone
You don't have to be good. Did you know that? I feel like people on Tick Tock prove that every day.
Jake Shane
I think you may be right.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah. So, like, anyone can do it.
Jake Shane
How do you. How did you learn how to do it?
Mary Beth Barone
I can't be honest. On.
Benito Skinner
Do you better be honest?
Jake Shane
We're at therapists.
Mary Beth Barone
How did I find stand up? I. I started taking improv classes. This was obviously an interesting time in my life, and I decided I was like, wait, this is so fun. I might just try stand up. I'll do an open mic and see how it goes. And then it was like, it went really well, unfortunately. So then my life took a dark turn, and now I do that. Now I do this for work.
Jake Shane
Do you have any upcoming shows?
Mary Beth Barone
I do. I have a bunch of shows in New York coming up, and I'm doing one in the Hamptons, so that'll be fun.
Benito Skinner
Oh, I love you.
Jake Shane
I gotta go there. Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
They get to decide if I live or die, so everyone gets a little bit. They just do a thumbs up or whatever. So that's gonna be fun. And then. Yeah. Holmes and I are actually hosting a show. Holmes, who plays Haley and overcompensating she's incredible. July 18th at the Bell House. I think tickets will be on July what? 18th?
Jake Shane
Bell House at the Bell House. Where's that?
Mary Beth Barone
It's in. It's in New York, in Brooklyn.
Jake Shane
I will be there.
Mary Beth Barone
Really?
Jake Shane
Yep. I will be there. I'm off to where I'm off everything.
Mary Beth Barone
Do you want to do the show? Like, do you want to be on it and we'll, like, ask you questions or something?
Jake Shane
Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
Okay.
Benito Skinner
Yeah. That makes. I, like, wait.
Jake Shane
Really?
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah.
Benito Skinner
You feel safe there?
Jake Shane
Okay. Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
It could be fun.
Jake Shane
Yeah. Consider me locked in up right now.
Benito Skinner
You would love her hour so much.
Jake Shane
I want to see it.
Benito Skinner
Like, one of my. It's my favorite you've ever done.
Mary Beth Barone
We. I had fun writing it. It's fun.
Jake Shane
How do you write jokes?
Mary Beth Barone
I just say things out loud that are funny, and I go, I got to write that down, you know?
Jake Shane
Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
And then that's the joke.
Benito Skinner
What do you say today? Oh, somebody said we're both Canadian, and Mary Bets is gonna. Oh, yeah, that.
Mary Beth Barone
But that's from the show. That's from overcompensating when. When I'm like, I have to go do my junior volunteer hours.
Jake Shane
Oh.
Benito Skinner
Oh, yeah. Yeah. Okay.
Mary Beth Barone
Oh, yeah. She makes me quoting your work.
Benito Skinner
But you had such. Oh, my God. At Coachella. I really wish. I think whatever was happening, I think if you were with her, you would have felt better.
Jake Shane
No, I know.
Benito Skinner
She would have kept you safe because she was making you laugh.
Mary Beth Barone
There were many atrocities.
Jake Shane
There was. I tried to see you at the Charli XCX after party, and she told me. She said there was walking involved. I. I opted out.
Mary Beth Barone
That's not what happened. And we actually don't even bring up this after party.
Benito Skinner
She got scolded.
Mary Beth Barone
I got reamed out the next day. My God, I was sobbing on FaceTime.
Jake Shane
Wait, what? Are you serious?
Mary Beth Barone
At La Quinta, I guess we were supposed to stay, and, like, we didn't know, so we just left. And then you were supposed to stay. That. I don't have grit.
Benito Skinner
Terry. My horse does.
Jake Shane
You miss the after party?
Mary Beth Barone
It was a really heated time. It was really heated.
Benito Skinner
Here's the thing. Terry is my horse girl. Something he's not always going to be.
Mary Beth Barone
He doesn't sugarcoat.
Benito Skinner
He doesn't sugar.
Mary Beth Barone
But I agree that. And we have the type of friendship where we can have a conversation like that and then, like, do. Do, like, hang out and do work the whole day, and it's, like, fine. But I think it's because we just, like, respect each Other. And we hear each other even when things we, like, don't agree on. So, like, for example, when I left the party, and then I got in trouble, so.
Jake Shane
But how did grit come about?
Mary Beth Barone
Well, here's my thing. Because actors don't have grit.
Benito Skinner
I'll talk about grit. So I'll talk about true grit. Well, I was just like, okay, they got there, like, a little bit early. I'm just saying. I'm totally gonna lie this whole story. They got there, like, a little bit early, and then they were just like, oh, like, the party wasn't going yet, so we left, and I'm just like, wait, you guys were supposed to all be here together. And, like, then I went to the party later, and I saw you. Yeah.
Jake Shane
Raising canes.
Benito Skinner
Oh, God. I was housing raising canes.
Jake Shane
I had a little bit, too.
Benito Skinner
And I kept throwing up in my mouth, Jake.
Jake Shane
Yeah, I know. You kept saying that.
Benito Skinner
Yeah, I know. And I said. I said it on our podcast because I couldn't believe it. They were giving out these drinks that were in, like, fake patron, like, bottles, which I thought they were kind of, like, fabulous, like, holding that. I was like, that's just such a cool favor. I kept drinking the drinks, and then I would be in the middle of conversations, and some of the people there. I was like, oh, my God. Like, I'm talking to Laura, and I'm like, I'm throwing up in my mouth right now. Like, can she see me re. Swallow it? And then I see you. And I'm housing raising canes, which I love their work. I had never had that. I didn't know that was a thing.
Jake Shane
I don't love raising canes, really.
Benito Skinner
The chicken was good.
Mary Beth Barone
I thought, it's fried chicken.
Jake Shane
It's, like, soggy a bit to me.
Benito Skinner
Oh, this felt fresh.
Jake Shane
Okay.
Benito Skinner
Fresh in the desert, right? And they had the toast on top, which I. I kind of. I've never really.
Jake Shane
Love.
Benito Skinner
You're not gonna get that one past that.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah, sorry.
Benito Skinner
I know you ain't slag trying to say that.
Mary Beth Barone
Comments about me being like.
Benito Skinner
Like.
Mary Beth Barone
Like. I don't know. I can already see the comments section of this one.
Jake Shane
It's fine. One of my friends doesn't let me say Porsche because she makes me say Porsche.
Benito Skinner
No, it's Porsche.
Jake Shane
Oh, no, it's not.
Benito Skinner
Wait, really?
Jake Shane
It's Porsche.
Benito Skinner
Porsche.
Mary Beth Barone
How much are you bringing up Porsches, by the way?
Jake Shane
I see a car, like, oh, what a cool Porsche. That is.
Mary Beth Barone
The one that said he had herpes. Because I'd like to have a word.
Jake Shane
No, no, no, no. That's a different problem.
Benito Skinner
Yeah, we'll talk to her later.
Mary Beth Barone
Interesting.
Benito Skinner
But yeah, I saw you and I was having raising canes. I loved it. The brioche. Is it brioche?
Mary Beth Barone
It's brioche. I think.
Benito Skinner
Anyway, you better hope it is.
Mary Beth Barone
I better hope it is.
Benito Skinner
But the little toasty and. Yeah. It was just. It. Seeing you made me so happy because obviously, you know, all of my close confidants had gone home because they had to wait 30 minutes.
Mary Beth Barone
We were there for. It was so tough being an actor.
Jake Shane
Why did you text me? I would have come right away.
Benito Skinner
And daddy was on the way. That's my thing.
Jake Shane
I was at the house.
Benito Skinner
All it takes is a little grass. It. You were. Wait, were you staying at the guest compound?
Jake Shane
No, I was pre gaming in the house next door.
Mary Beth Barone
Well, you didn't text me.
Benito Skinner
I was so drunk at that though, that after I thought, I really want to write a horror movie about the guest compound.
Mary Beth Barone
I agree.
Jake Shane
How totally beautiful would that be?
Benito Skinner
Yeah. But then I thought, you know, the next morning I thought, no, I don't think I should. I don't. There's nothing to say there. It'd be over quick. Maybe a short.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah, short. It's a short.
Jake Shane
The guest compound was a lot.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
I've never been in a space like that.
Jake Shane
What was that?
Benito Skinner
Well, it almost didn't feel like a space. They almost felt like hollow homes. Like we walked in and it was a little bit of like a haunted house.
Mary Beth Barone
It. No, it was. It reminded me of like a pop up museum of ice cream in New York.
Benito Skinner
Buried that.
Mary Beth Barone
It was a refinery store was so big.
Jake Shane
Yes.
Mary Beth Barone
And it was like pastel. And then there was like, I want to say a Mickey Mouse sculpture.
Jake Shane
Yes.
Mary Beth Barone
But it's like why?
Jake Shane
It was like where they filmed. Don't Worry darling.
Mary Beth Barone
Maybe. Yeah, it was sort of that.
Benito Skinner
Yeah, it was kind of art pop.
Mary Beth Barone
It was art pop in a way.
Jake Shane
It was.
Mary Beth Barone
And I just. Yeah, I had to leave, but.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
I'm sorry. I missed you guys.
Jake Shane
I missed you. I was so happy to see you last night. And now today, seeing you and your.
Benito Skinner
Girls made my night.
Jake Shane
Oh yeah. You know, one of my girlfriends is in love with you.
Benito Skinner
What?
Jake Shane
Yes.
Benito Skinner
Let's talk about this.
Jake Shane
Julia said, what the hell. Please tell Bunny I'm in love with him.
Benito Skinner
I love her.
Mary Beth Barone
Well, tell her to back the off.
Benito Skinner
She got something to say. Wait. I just love your girls. They're so sweet.
Jake Shane
They're really funny.
Benito Skinner
Yeah. Wait, so when you were on tour, were they all with you the whole time?
Jake Shane
In and out, in and out.
Benito Skinner
I've never been in a tour bus, so I want to talk to you about this. How was that?
Jake Shane
I like it. Cool enough.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
Well, you're, like, the perfect size.
Jake Shane
I also have, like, a bed.
Mary Beth Barone
Totally.
Jake Shane
So it's like.
Benito Skinner
Oh, yeah, you're in the back.
Jake Shane
I can't complain. But you can't on the bus.
Benito Skinner
Wait, what?
Jake Shane
Wait, what? Is right. Okay, so sometimes you wake up, you're like, why not? Because, like, the bus driver has to, like, empty it out, and he just.
Mary Beth Barone
Doesn'T feel like it.
Jake Shane
No, it's more of, like. I think it's more of, like. Like, a kindness thing, like, I don't want you to do. You don't need to do that.
Mary Beth Barone
Wait, do you rem. When John Mayer's bus, like, let out their poop buckets into the Chicago river and there was people, like, on a tour boat, like, and it went on them.
Benito Skinner
I thought that was Dave Matthews fan. I was like, don't talk about John Mayor like that.
Mary Beth Barone
You just turned straight for a second. But I'm like, I thought I got my wires crossed with white singers.
Jake Shane
Yeah, it happens. It happens. Who you guys listening to right now?
Benito Skinner
Oh, my God.
Mary Beth Barone
I. I am so just listening to Charlie.
Benito Skinner
All right. The new Men I Trust album.
Mary Beth Barone
Oh, interesting. Canadian, if I'm not mistaken.
Jake Shane
Are you Canadian that you're Canadian?
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Jake Shane
From where?
Benito Skinner
Bonnie Bear, Bunny Bear is so good.
Jake Shane
Fantastic.
Benito Skinner
And the new album by Wet, do you like?
Mary Beth Barone
I haven't heard it yet.
Benito Skinner
I love Wet. Oh, my God. What really got me through through some things in college. I can't really speak today. I think I'm doing a really good job. Words can be so hard, don't you think? Like, podcasts are hard. No one tells you that.
Mary Beth Barone
I know.
Benito Skinner
I love what I just listened to.
Mary Beth Barone
Charlie still.
Jake Shane
Me too.
Mary Beth Barone
Pretty much.
Benito Skinner
I love New Lord. I mean, what was that? I think is fantastic, and I am so excited for Addison.
Jake Shane
What am I listening to? I like you.
Benito Skinner
We weren't going to ask.
Jake Shane
I'm listening to. What am I listening to? I'm listening to a lot of old Glee covers right now.
Benito Skinner
Yes.
Jake Shane
So I did, like, a Somebody to Love moment. I did paradise by the Dashboard Light.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Jake Shane
I was doing Roots before Branches. I was doing that, and then I've been listening to a lot of. Phone's gone. You know, of course.
Benito Skinner
No facts. You can't.
Mary Beth Barone
You can't remember.
Jake Shane
I am listening to the new Bon Iver. I was during the Coachella weekend when that album came out, like, that's when I was listening to that, and then I. You know, it died down and. The new Marin Morris is amazing.
Benito Skinner
Oh, I love her so much.
Mary Beth Barone
She is a legend. She sang our first dance at our wedding.
Benito Skinner
She did. Wow.
Mary Beth Barone
The worst show we've ever done.
Benito Skinner
It was.
Mary Beth Barone
It was so, by far the worst show we've ever done.
Benito Skinner
It was so shocking.
Jake Shane
You guys could do a bad show.
Mary Beth Barone
No, they started the show without telling us. And there a line around the block of people that weren't even sat yet. And Charlie Puth was there, so it was just, like. It was a mess.
Benito Skinner
Terry, stop. Terry, on the way home was like. It was. I just don't think he's like. I don't think any of them will really think about it again.
Mary Beth Barone
Right.
Benito Skinner
Like, as they're kind of like, don't worry about it. They'll forget about that show.
Jake Shane
What was so bad about it?
Mary Beth Barone
Well, it was in a music venue, and it was like, 500 seats sold out.
Benito Skinner
It smelled like cum, though. It smelled like cum immediately. And I took my. Sat in a room that smelled like cum. So it just took bad vibes.
Mary Beth Barone
We had, like, we had a bunch of comedians on different segments, and, like, just nothing worked the way it was supposed to. And then I think the only bright spot was Marin Morris singing the bones. And we danced, and there was a montage of childhood photos of us.
Benito Skinner
What a darling that she. I mean, she did that. Saw that dumpster fire of a show that we.
Mary Beth Barone
I know.
Benito Skinner
And she still came out like, I'm gonna do this. I'm gonna do me. And she. Yeah, she's a legend. In the middle, I think is like, that's a top fiver for me, baby. Do you know that song? Why don't you just meet me in the middle?
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah.
Benito Skinner
What's your favorite? Yeah, of course.
Mary Beth Barone
All right.
Jake Shane
Wait, Is that America?
Benito Skinner
Yeah. Yeah. What's your favorite Glee cover? Do you have one?
Jake Shane
My favorite Glee cover is Roots before branches, though it is an original.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Jake Shane
I also love.
Mary Beth Barone
I love that your mind. I love your mind.
Jake Shane
I love your mind. I love your mind. I love your mind, too.
Benito Skinner
Oh, fully on his phone.
Mary Beth Barone
I thought you were here to watch.
Benito Skinner
He's tweeting. I hate the way gay guys and girls talk. I hate when they open their mouths.
Jake Shane
And I love paradise by the dashboard light. And I love all time as faithfully. How could you not?
Benito Skinner
Wow.
Jake Shane
Right? When Finn tells Rachel I love you. Are you kidding me?
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah.
Benito Skinner
You have so much to enjoy. I. I'm so excited for you to.
Jake Shane
Watch it and the they got. Were able to get on air is so, like, so insane.
Benito Skinner
That show was out of pocket a lot.
Mary Beth Barone
Oh, how was talking to her about being able to read?
Benito Skinner
Oh, that was incredible.
Mary Beth Barone
I mean, was that just like a dream come true?
Benito Skinner
You did that in Bruce Wayne's apartment? No, you tell me that's not it.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah, yeah.
Jake Shane
The Joker, too.
Mary Beth Barone
Oh, I watched it on a plane.
Benito Skinner
We earlier do. We are heads.
Mary Beth Barone
His language is interpretive and it can be. Yeah, I actually liked it. I had no problems with it.
Jake Shane
It was a musical now.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah. And great.
Benito Skinner
Well, yeah, it's. It's one of those things where you're watching it the whole time and you're like. Yeah. I mean, it almost reads as like a music video of sorts. Like, I was watching and the guy next to me started watching and I felt like, okay. I don't know. And then he turned it off after 20 minutes, and I'm like, that's not what. Like, you come on. Like, men used to go to war. Like, hunker down.
Jake Shane
Watch. All of you can watch.
Mary Beth Barone
I think Joaquin Phoenix is so good.
Benito Skinner
Like, he's incredible. And Gaga and I love their voices. I didn't know it was going to be covers of the whole.
Mary Beth Barone
It's a jukebox musical in a lot of ways.
Benito Skinner
Yeah, absolutely.
Mary Beth Barone
It's a lot like Glee.
Benito Skinner
Yeah. It has very, very Glee episode of Glee.
Mary Beth Barone
No, I. The only thing I've seen is that meme that was like, I'm going to make a blank.
Jake Shane
That is so an environment that's so.
Mary Beth Barone
I'm going to make a blank. That is so blank goes crazy. Yeah.
Jake Shane
You would love it. How could you not?
Benito Skinner
It really changed me. I. Yeah, I think chemically it changed me. I mean, I couldn't believe that that was on TV and that all those people were gay. Like, by the end. Everyone is fucking gay in that show. I was just like, oh, my God. To the point where. At the time, too, I was like, it's so gay.
Jake Shane
But did you watch it every week?
Benito Skinner
It was like my. My piece. It was my favorite thing in the world. And I bought all the songs on itunes. Lea Michele's Take a Bow was such a big deal for me. I can't.
Jake Shane
And why did she do that again?
Benito Skinner
It was something about Finn and what's Quinn? Yeah. She's like, what you put on. Yeah. And I love. Oh, my God, Quinn. The moment I wake up. I love her little debut. I just think that. Yeah. The characters are so amazing, and I feel like the first three episodes, it's like the O.C. they are like knockout television.
Jake Shane
I've never seen the O.C.
Mary Beth Barone
So that's something that's actually not okay.
Benito Skinner
So this is where we draw the line.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah.
Jake Shane
Is it that good?
Benito Skinner
You are going to be so immersed in this program.
Jake Shane
Really.
Benito Skinner
You don't understand, Jake. It. This has been my entire. What season is it? Spring. It has been spring. Like, I. Every night I watch three episodes, I pray that Terry goes to bed.
Jake Shane
I know what's her name dies, but that's like.
Mary Beth Barone
It's not about the destination. It's about the journey.
Benito Skinner
Exactly. And you know what? In the end, I think the version of her that you see in the show, she died. I think Marissa lives on. That's how I'm interpreting it.
Jake Shane
Okay.
Benito Skinner
I don't think she would die. I don't think that would have happened. It just doesn't. People don't die.
Jake Shane
People don't die.
Benito Skinner
I just won't allow it.
Jake Shane
They don't.
Benito Skinner
It's the first season of that show. I would say the first five episodes, I. You're just not gonna be. You're gonna be so immersed.
Mary Beth Barone
It's funny, it's charming, it's sad, it's tragic. It's like it hits everything, and then.
Benito Skinner
All of a sudden, you'll be watching it. And then Misha Barton will wear a dress that just wakes you up. She's in this, like, Little Missoni dress when she.
Mary Beth Barone
Oh, I know exactly what you're talking about.
Benito Skinner
It's on a yacht. K. It's just. She will wear something. I just. I just. I'm like. It was so. So magical.
Jake Shane
She was a moment at the time.
Benito Skinner
Huh? You can't even imagine. It's, like, beyond even that. It's like she. She wears this, like, Chanel couture dress to prom. It's so.
Jake Shane
Are they all super wealthy in the show?
Benito Skinner
Of course. But then, like, they're kind of. Not at times, but they figure it out.
Mary Beth Barone
Totally.
Benito Skinner
They get back on.
Mary Beth Barone
They marry whoever they have to marry.
Benito Skinner
Always land on their feet. Julia Cooper. I just can't. I know. This will be once you're done with your Glee. Watch, please.
Jake Shane
Well. And overcompensate in.
Benito Skinner
I think overcompensating. You'll be done in an hour.
Jake Shane
Yeah, I think I'll be done today.
Benito Skinner
It's like, I. Which I'm finding is really. I thought would be like, yeah. Oh, my God. Binge it. And then some people today being like, season two. Let's go. And I'm like, oh, God, you really did do this.
Jake Shane
That's what you want.
Benito Skinner
You did this in one sitting. You know, it took seven years.
Jake Shane
You know what I need from you guys, though, on this press tour?
Benito Skinner
What?
Jake Shane
The Jennifer Hudson show.
Benito Skinner
Oh. Where, you know, I'm ready to move these hips down that. I need you in the spirit tunnel. Did you do it?
Jake Shane
No, Dark kid. I never.
Mary Beth Barone
I. I will say there is someone in the room that has done the Jennifer Hudson show.
Benito Skinner
I don't think the spirit tunnel existed. Oh, they got to get you back through that.
Jake Shane
Oh, you've done it, though.
Benito Skinner
I did it once. Yeah. It was fun. She was. She was really nice. Yeah. I want to want. I really want to walk butt naked through it. Oh, that's good. Dead right down the barrel of the camera, looking right into it. They're censoring me. So intense. Just heels on.
Jake Shane
I think you should do that.
Benito Skinner
Yeah. And they sing unholy.
Jake Shane
There was someone at the overcompensating premiere last night that looked so strikingly similar to Ellen DeGeneres. I have never seen anything like it. Oh, I haven't seen. And every person I talk to, she would pass like a ghost, and I would say, is that not Ellen DeGeneres?
Mary Beth Barone
And no one else could see her. No one else could see her. It's just you.
Jake Shane
Yeah.
Benito Skinner
For this not to be my favorite experience I've ever had on earth. Do you get that?
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah.
Benito Skinner
Watching you say that you saw someone who was Ellen DeGeneres last night. And I do think the ghost of her is there at the Palladium. We do this bit on the podcast where I just picture her every day of her life. I think she wakes up in Santa Barbara. She. Well. And Portia has a matcha because she's a matcha girl.
Jake Shane
Oh, I've seen this.
Benito Skinner
Yes. Yeah. And she opens her door, and outside she goes, they tried to cancel me.
Jake Shane
And so she is.
Benito Skinner
So Every morning she says that. And Portia just sips her mouth.
Mary Beth Barone
She's just mixing her matcha. You hear the sound of the spoon hitting them?
Benito Skinner
No, it's not even spoon. It's one of those frothers.
Jake Shane
No, no. There was someone that was so strikingly similar to Ellen that I couldn't.
Benito Skinner
Can I just say, Ellen, you ain't slick. She. She.
Jake Shane
She was there.
Benito Skinner
She's wearing a wig.
Jake Shane
You ask Owen. Ask me. Ask anybody. I was like, hey, to your right. Is that not Ellen DeGeneres?
Benito Skinner
Plays it goes as Ellen.
Mary Beth Barone
So obviously a gay guy. We don't know. This is a cold Case we don't know.
Benito Skinner
This is why you had to leave. You were like, I can't do it.
Jake Shane
I was. But I just kept looking at her, everybody. I was like, that's Ellen. And she would walk by alone every time.
Mary Beth Barone
It's crazy. You didn't come up to either of us to find out or anything.
Jake Shane
Yeah, no, because like you guys were so. I didn't want to like, but I just wanted to Congratulation.
Mary Beth Barone
That's really high priority.
Jake Shane
Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
If there's an Ellen look. Oh, you did hire that Ellen lookalike. She showed up.
Benito Skinner
I told Amazon, I said we need a photo booth, we need merch. I need an Ellen lookalike. I need. I need a red carpet. I need Getty. I need Jake Shane. Yeah, it was kind of like one of my like non negotiables.
Jake Shane
Well, she was there. God, I can't believe the holding space lady was there.
Benito Skinner
Yeah, she's incredible. And she's so in on the joke in a way that I'm like, that's amazing.
Jake Shane
You got to be in on like.
Benito Skinner
I was just like, obviously. I mean you're like, that's such an iconic moment. And she's like, yeah, yeah, totally like she's, you know.
Jake Shane
Okay. Do we think the Wicked Part 2 press tour is going to live up to Part 1?
Benito Skinner
Well, how are they going to do that again?
Jake Shane
Oh, if anyone can do it.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah. They have grit.
Benito Skinner
The baby girls, they do have.
Mary Beth Barone
They have grit.
Benito Skinner
You know what I think is so unbelievable about that is like that really is just like a play. I was having this thought and I'm just like, that is so crazy. That was like a blockbuster. Right.
Mary Beth Barone
Why did they call it Shiz? Oh, that pissed me off.
Jake Shane
That pissed you off?
Mary Beth Barone
Why Shiz University?
Benito Skinner
Shiz. Imagine. Hey, can I just say, I can't imagine the comments. They. These theater kids are going to shave your head.
Mary Beth Barone
You know what?
Benito Skinner
They are going to burn you at this stage.
Mary Beth Barone
Explain it.
Benito Skinner
Yes, actually, let's figure this out before.
Mary Beth Barone
You come for me. Tell me why it's called Shiz University.
Benito Skinner
I had no idea we were getting talking animals. That did.
Jake Shane
I forgot that that happened. Did you see the play?
Benito Skinner
I haven't. I can't wait to see it.
Jake Shane
This is one of Never seen.
Benito Skinner
I've never seen the play, which makes me so sad but.
Mary Beth Barone
Well, now you're a target.
Benito Skinner
Sorry, I can't wait. But here's my thing. I'm like, I had to see the movie first. Sorry. I've been waiting all this time. But for that everyone would give me about this, and I'm like, plays are expensive. Like, when I lived in New York, I wasn't like, that.
Mary Beth Barone
Didn't, like, go to the theater.
Benito Skinner
No. But I mean, you know. Yeah. So I'm like. I don't know if there was, like, a student discount. Wasn't a student at the time, so I don't know.
Jake Shane
Yeah, it was not a student discount.
Benito Skinner
Right. I'm like, it was so exciting.
Mary Beth Barone
Broadway. Sort of like, if you can't afford it, like, you.
Benito Skinner
Good luck.
Jake Shane
You guys never told me what you ride for.
Mary Beth Barone
I did. I think I did, but I can't remember it now. I said something I did, but I don't remember.
Jake Shane
What do you ride for?
Benito Skinner
Well, we've ridden for things so much now that, like, I really just have to pick what's in the room. And to me, it's your slippers, because there's something about having a house shoe.
Mary Beth Barone
And they're living.
Jake Shane
They're lived in, and they're filthy, and.
Benito Skinner
They know the most comfortable version of you. They know the, like.
Mary Beth Barone
I can know the mold of your foot. That's intimacy.
Benito Skinner
Yeah. They know that you're. Exactly. And you know what else? Wear your couture. And that's what I love. If you buy something nice, wear it to death. Mary Kate Olsen and her freaking Hermes Birkin. That is what I want. I want to see the holes. I want to see the sweat. Why do I keep referencing this?
Mary Beth Barone
I don't know.
Benito Skinner
Have you seen how to Lose a guy in 10 days?
Mary Beth Barone
We're making a watch list for you.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
And it's gonna.
Benito Skinner
It's gonna be. It's gonna be a long day.
Jake Shane
I never. Have you seen it?
Mary Beth Barone
How to Lose a guy in 10 days?
Jake Shane
Yeah.
Benito Skinner
Is that Kate Hudson?
Jake Shane
Oh, yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah.
Benito Skinner
There's just this moment where she says, like, you can feel the sweat. And I don't know, I keep saying it. It.
Jake Shane
That's the one where she's like.
Benito Skinner
She's crazy.
Jake Shane
Be Ben's partner.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah.
Benito Skinner
Yeah. Exactly. Yeah.
Jake Shane
Never seen it. I love Matthew McConaughey.
Benito Skinner
You're gonna love it. He is quite the stud in this one. Yes, I think so.
Mary Beth Barone
I want to ask every Napo baby, how do you decide what to wear every day? How do you decide? Because you have so many clothes, so how could you ever pick from all those clothes?
Jake Shane
I actually wonder the same thing. No, I wonder the same thing.
Benito Skinner
What was your thing about all of them having flat stomachs?
Mary Beth Barone
Oh, all Nepo babies have flat stomachs.
Jake Shane
They do.
Mary Beth Barone
I'm not A conspiracy theorist, but I don't think Jeffrey Epstein is dead. And all Nepo babies have flat.
Benito Skinner
And Dear Media, it's up.
Mary Beth Barone
I'm like, is it the genetics of it? Or like, what. What's going on there?
Jake Shane
They all do have flat ones.
Mary Beth Barone
I don't know, but I would love some answers. So the next one you have on your pod, if you could just.
Jake Shane
I'll ask, I'll say, how.
Mary Beth Barone
What's going on?
Benito Skinner
And they'll look at you and just blood will rush out of their mouth. You can't say that. Who sent you? Yeah, yeah.
Jake Shane
Oh, you know what I write for, actually.
Benito Skinner
I love them.
Jake Shane
Speaking of Nepo babies, Lily Rose Depp's audition for Nosferatu.
Benito Skinner
Oh, my God. On zoom. To do that on.
Mary Beth Barone
She was at a desk.
Benito Skinner
Like, I can't. I'm literally thinking about it. It was so. Oh, my God. And wait, no, I'm thinking about Ellen again. No Elena, Just this woman. Jake, Shane, Just you losing your mind at the premiere over Ellen.
Mary Beth Barone
We'll look at the photos today. We'll see if she's amazing.
Jake Shane
She has a bob, pixie cut, blonde. Well, yes, because she looks like Ellen.
Benito Skinner
Yeah, of course.
Jake Shane
And I, I. She was there.
Benito Skinner
Did she have a tie on?
Jake Shane
What?
Benito Skinner
Did she have a tie on or a suit? Sneakers. White sneakers.
Jake Shane
Definitely wasn't a dress. Okay, I'm going to freak out, honestly. Like, I know Cobra Snake took a photo of her.
Benito Skinner
I know.
Mary Beth Barone
I'm about to reach out.
Benito Skinner
I'm going to look to the photos and find this moment. I cannot wait. I. This is my. A gift to myself.
Jake Shane
I mean, I was so taken aback. I. Louise, if you were there, you. You would have taken a photo. It was that jarring. I was like, that's Ellen DeGeneres at the overcompensating premiere at the Palladium in Los Angeles.
Mary Beth Barone
Tweet that Ellen DeGeneres has arrived at the overcompensating premiere at the Palladium.
Jake Shane
You know who gave it their fucking all last night?
Benito Skinner
Who?
Jake Shane
Those paid actors you guys hired to hype up the crowd.
Mary Beth Barone
The paid actors who are there to go. Like, welcome to freshman year.
Benito Skinner
No one told me they're the new student orientation leaders. And no one told me this. So I walked in and I thought they were, like, making fun of me for a second. I was like, that's always. I got doms. They're like, oh, yeah, first when you want to fun tonight.
Mary Beth Barone
I was like, he got a hate comment that we. And they said, that was written actually quite well. So that we quote it constantly.
Benito Skinner
Well, I just, like, has. If anyone says anything bad about you, I'll. That's where I'm like, it's. Yeah. I appreciate that they're gonna meet floor because I'm kind of linebacker. Vibes.
Jake Shane
Yeah.
Benito Skinner
Like, I'm ready to.
Jake Shane
You are. You're red.
Mary Beth Barone
It's not even these days. This is just your body now.
Jake Shane
Yeah. This is just your body.
Mary Beth Barone
Hey. Hey. Hear that? This is your body now.
Jake Shane
Therapy feels really good.
Benito Skinner
Benny can beat up everyone. I'm just ready to go.
Mary Beth Barone
He's gonna be Reacher, I forgot to tell you.
Benito Skinner
But I am Reacher.
Jake Shane
Congratulations. Congratulations.
Benito Skinner
But, yeah, I want to. I do feel like I want to fight someone soon. It's just like. Just give me a reason.
Jake Shane
You have to. I mean, with this body, they might as well.
Benito Skinner
I'm ready for the smackdown. That's the thing, right?
Mary Beth Barone
And I'll be there cheering you on.
Jake Shane
Have you guys ever gotten into a bar fight?
Benito Skinner
No.
Mary Beth Barone
I did.
Benito Skinner
Have you ever hit someone? Are you like. Are you.
Jake Shane
No. No. Fourth grade, come up to me and say, like, I'm going to fight you now.
Benito Skinner
Whoa.
Mary Beth Barone
I got p. I got punched once.
Benito Skinner
But whoa. Maybe we already talked about this, but since when I was in the closet, I had the meanest thing I could possibly think of about everyone in the class in the back of my head, just in case they brought up me being gay. And to one of them, she said something to me. And I go, you know what I could say right now? Don't do this.
Mary Beth Barone
And that was enough.
Benito Skinner
And I go, don't do this. And what she said? Knock it off. And she was like, you know what I mean? She's kind of like work. That's actually sick.
Jake Shane
Yeah.
Benito Skinner
And in that moment, I came out to her in a way.
Jake Shane
I was like, you read her.
Benito Skinner
I go, you don't want to do this to me right now.
Jake Shane
Are you ready to get into the tell me what's wrongs?
Mary Beth Barone
Totally.
Benito Skinner
Okay.
Jake Shane
Adam, chime in when you feel necessary.
Benito Skinner
Okay.
Mary Beth Barone
Only if it makes sense.
Jake Shane
I have this friend that is obsessed with the ideal of male attention and is talking to five plus guys at the same time. Me and my friends try to tell her that it's not right. Why not? But she just laughs, says she's using them, and moves on. I love her. We wouldn't care, really. But it's now with guys that we're friends with.
Benito Skinner
Oh, you can do it with strangers. I feel like guys you're friends with is tough because there's relationships and you have to Be thoughtful about that.
Mary Beth Barone
And what are you using them for exactly? You only need one to put your air conditioner in right when it starts. Starts being hot. So I don't think you need five, but I think it's like, yeah, what's. What, what are you trying to gain from it?
Benito Skinner
I don't mind it if it's strangers, though. If you want to, like, be texting a bunch of guys and, like, you know, kind of seeing what's in the end, that feels like, you know, hedging your bets, I'm into that.
Jake Shane
I think I'm getting a weird vibe from the person that wrote this in. Now I'm getting a weird jealous vibe. Louise, don't you. Come on, say it. You just. You disagree?
Benito Skinner
No, I just kind of blacked out for a second.
Jake Shane
Yeah.
Benito Skinner
Yeah. She's like, I haven't listened to a.
Jake Shane
Single word you guys have said, this girl. But our girlfriend is talking to so many guys, and we all talk about how.
Mary Beth Barone
What's the question?
Jake Shane
What do we do? What are you gonna do? Nothing.
Benito Skinner
Let her do it. But if it's like, if it's multiple friends that are in the group, but just be like, hey, like, maybe, you know, like, only partake if you're actually serious about maybe dating one of them. This is a dating thing, right? Or she's just texting to be friends.
Jake Shane
With these guys, like, flirting and around years. I like her.
Mary Beth Barone
I think maybe. Okay, maybe 20. But, like, this is sort of a. This is giving. This isn't like, we live in a city.
Jake Shane
Right.
Mary Beth Barone
Sort of thing.
Jake Shane
So speaking of how the. Do I deal with being back in my hometown and everyone from high school being home, like, there are so many people I don't want to interact with. It's a minefield.
Mary Beth Barone
That's tough, I think. Wear a mask.
Benito Skinner
Yeah, mask can be huge. That's such a good point.
Mary Beth Barone
A mask and a hat and sunglasses.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
Actors closed.
Benito Skinner
Actors, vibes.
Jake Shane
What do you do when you go home?
Benito Skinner
Home? I, I, this is. Sounds terrible. I don't go home that often, but when I do go home, I'm kind of just in my house with my.
Jake Shane
Yeah, I got dots.
Benito Skinner
Like, I don't. I don't go out much, and I definitely wouldn't go to, like, a bar or anything like that. I just. I don't know. Is it, like, when did you come out? You don't have to tell me, but.
Jake Shane
When I was, like, 10. I think I was 10.
Benito Skinner
Oh, yeah. You're young.
Jake Shane
Yeah. I asked my mom for a toy after, and she said, yeah, because I was just like, well, there's this. I think it was like some commercial I saw. And she was like, what? Like, you're not, like, gonna get rewarded for this.
Benito Skinner
Whoa.
Jake Shane
She's like, but I'm so happy for you. But like, I'm not gonna.
Benito Skinner
Like, I would have loved. I would. I would have said, okay, I've got a gay son. He's also a businessman.
Jake Shane
Yeah, that's what she said. Well, that is what she says, but she didn't buy me, I think, you know, Maybe I was 8 and I. No, I was 9. And it was during the recession, of course.
Mary Beth Barone
Tough. Yeah, it was tough for families.
Jake Shane
It was. It was the recession.
Benito Skinner
It was a bummer.
Jake Shane
It was a recession.
Mary Beth Barone
It's hard.
Benito Skinner
Big bummer. What was the question again?
Mary Beth Barone
People in your hometown.
Jake Shane
Oh, where are you from?
Mary Beth Barone
Oh, yeah, I'm from Connecticut. I'm from Stanford. I go home all the time. But I'm on good terms with people that I knew back then, so I don't dread seeing them. I guess there's a few people that if I saw, I would just wave and smile. You don't have to have a conversation, but I think, right. You can always have AirPods in and.
Jake Shane
You'Re on the phone, headphones on people these days.
Benito Skinner
It really doesn't.
Jake Shane
That doesn't stop.
Benito Skinner
You can even. You, no, you can truly even be in a. A full conversation with someone and they still will just be like, hey, yeah, like, what the. Up, man. Yeah, look at you go. My one thing. That's the thing. It's like sometimes I feel like I have to then come out to them or they do this whole thing of, like, crazy, and I'm like, oh, I can't do this.
Jake Shane
Right.
Benito Skinner
So, yeah, I mean, I, I. But I think it's just kind of maybe avoiding those types of. Those types of places. Right?
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah. Avoid the spaces.
Jake Shane
Right. Maybe watch, like, Sweet Home Alabama or something.
Mary Beth Barone
Absolutely. There's a lot of good advice in there, is that.
Jake Shane
I've seen it.
Benito Skinner
Yeah, That's a good one.
Jake Shane
I've seen it.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
I would say, like, 10 things I hate about you, or.
Benito Skinner
No.
Mary Beth Barone
Whoa. No. How to lose a guy in 10 days. A lot of stuff. Yeah, same, like, sort of time and, and tone and it's.
Jake Shane
I haven't seen either.
Mary Beth Barone
Okay, well, that'll be added.
Jake Shane
But I appreciate that it's okay that I haven't seen the Office.
Benito Skinner
Of course.
Mary Beth Barone
You have the rest of your life to watch this stuff.
Benito Skinner
Now the OC we gotta get to it.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah.
Benito Skinner
Because I really think this will change you chemically.
Jake Shane
What about One Tree Hill?
Mary Beth Barone
Never seen.
Benito Skinner
I haven't seen that, but I'm sure you know. Do you love. Yeah, yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
Totally. Couldn't do both. It was like, you did the OC or you did One Tree.
Benito Skinner
My dad watched One Tree Hill.
Jake Shane
That's going to Nathan Scott.
Benito Skinner
Wow.
Jake Shane
Have you guys ever seen the Leftovers?
Mary Beth Barone
Yes.
Benito Skinner
Yes. Justin.
Jake Shane
That is one of my. I just finished it. Justin Thoreau.
Benito Skinner
Justin.
Mary Beth Barone
I love shows that say, like, we don't have to make sense. Deal with it. No, they didn't answer questions.
Benito Skinner
HBO makes that. I love it.
Mary Beth Barone
I love it. Put him in the bath naked and. As much as you want.
Jake Shane
Right. And it's like, was that real? Like, are. What was going on. I loved that goddamn show. Carrie Coon period.
Benito Skinner
Like five years. That was a long time ago.
Mary Beth Barone
It was like. Yeah. And I was the only person I knew that watched it, so it was really hard.
Jake Shane
Have you seen Station 11?
Benito Skinner
I heard. That's incredible.
Jake Shane
Amazing.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Jake Shane
What's your favorite show, like, of all time? Just maybe recently or. Yeah, no, you can go all time.
Benito Skinner
Oh, I've been watching Nirvana, the band of the show. It's like. Like, do you know it?
Jake Shane
Okay. Yeah, yeah.
Benito Skinner
It's like. It's a couple of guys shooting the. About Nirvana. Canadian comedy. And it's.
Mary Beth Barone
Oh, that.
Jake Shane
It's.
Benito Skinner
It's that I Lost. But Lost is my favorite show of all time.
Jake Shane
I was speaking about Lost. Yeah.
Benito Skinner
In the office.
Mary Beth Barone
That was earlier on this podcast, but also earlier on.
Jake Shane
Earlier today.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
We. Your house is system.
Jake Shane
It is bugs.
Mary Beth Barone
And we've been listening and we knew what to bring up.
Jake Shane
Did you guys ever watch Degrassi?
Mary Beth Barone
I did watch Degrassi a few, but.
Benito Skinner
I'm a Skins girl. No, I never saw. I turned down an audition for Degrassi one time.
Mary Beth Barone
When you were a kid.
Benito Skinner
Yeah, No, I was. Yeah.
Jake Shane
Why'd you turn it down?
Benito Skinner
I just was like, I didn't want to be Undergrassi.
Mary Beth Barone
Wow. Shots fired at Drake. I mean, he's been through enough.
Jake Shane
Well, shots fired, literally. He got shot at in the show.
Mary Beth Barone
Becomes a paralyzed person.
Jake Shane
Yeah.
Benito Skinner
Oh, my God.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah. That show tackles tough subjects. Sex.
Benito Skinner
When you get serious, I start to laugh.
Mary Beth Barone
It's not all a joke.
Benito Skinner
People love that show in the US.
Mary Beth Barone
I find it was on Noggin, which was like a. Like, it wasn't Disney. It wasn't Nickelodeon. It was a secret third thing called Noggin.
Benito Skinner
It was also an MTV too, with the little dogs in the corner.
Mary Beth Barone
Oh, yeah, the Two Little Dogs. That was later.
Benito Skinner
You know what. What show I loved so much was Ralph and Big.
Mary Beth Barone
Oh, totally.
Benito Skinner
I'm so sad. Big is dead, which just breaks my heart. And Rob. Oh, my. It's a deer Dick drear.
Mary Beth Barone
Dick dry.
Benito Skinner
Dick dry. I'm obsessed. He just seems like a great guy. I loved their whole. Their chemistry was just amazing. I think you would have loved it.
Jake Shane
I watched, like, a lot of MTV stuff, though. Like, I watched Tila Tequila.
Benito Skinner
Oh, my God. I Shot at Love.
Jake Shane
Yeah. God, she. She lost the plot.
Benito Skinner
Yeah, I think so. But I loved that too.
Jake Shane
That show was amazing. Paris Hilton's my new bff.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Jake Shane
Do you Real World?
Benito Skinner
Were you a real world? No.
Jake Shane
Kind of Real World's actually. I think maybe partly where I realized I was gay because there was. They were all having sex on there, and there was this guy, and I was like. But I like what he. How he has going on, you know, I forget. But I do what I remember in Paris Hilton's My New bff. And I really wonder if anyone at home listening who has seen it remembers this. So in the final round of Paris Hilton's my new BFF, she was deciding between, like three BFFs, right? This is real. And they brought in their old. These BFFs, ex best friends to like, come and talk shit about them, to tell Paris why they shouldn't be her best friend. I really hope I'm not wrong. There was a moment where this one girl goes, paris, you should not be friends with her. One time she took a shit and sent me a photo of it. And I remember watching that.
Mary Beth Barone
I. I honestly, I have nothing to add. What a perfect moment in television.
Jake Shane
And I really. It's not talked about enough because that happened.
Mary Beth Barone
That whole show is like, sort of like, left the consciousness. I didn't. I had totally forgotten it was a thing.
Jake Shane
We have to bring it back because.
Benito Skinner
It was during her fight with Nicole Richie. Right.
Jake Shane
It must have been.
Benito Skinner
That was crazy. That, like, consumed me because Simple Life was my favorite show.
Jake Shane
Oh, okay.
Benito Skinner
It was everything to me.
Jake Shane
And no one thought you were gay?
Benito Skinner
Well, no one is an interesting thing to say. No, I'm sure so many people did. But enough. We're kind of like, all right, you know, maybe not.
Jake Shane
Yeah, but you were. You're good at playing straight. Like, you know, like, when you put it on, you put it on.
Benito Skinner
Thank you. I mean, I really appreciate that. Yeah, no, I think that's just like Idaho. I was just like, okay, I'm gonna do everything. I'm looking at around me. I'm just gonna mimic that and do the best I can. But it's really. It is hard to like, fully. I mean, I just. Given who I am now, I think it's pretty obvious why that was difficult at the time, but.
Jake Shane
Oh, my God, I'm so sorry. Terry's mom last night, right?
Mary Beth Barone
Kathy.
Benito Skinner
Oh, this was incredible.
Jake Shane
Y.
Mary Beth Barone
So exciting.
Benito Skinner
She loved you.
Jake Shane
I said, I love you.
Benito Skinner
His sister was like, oh, my God. Jake, Shane. Like, that was. She. It was so. It was so sweet, but I can't. She was like, what? Cuz you go, that's the star. Yeah.
Jake Shane
I'm obsessed with her. She has everything. She was wearing pearls. It was so kind, classy.
Benito Skinner
He grabbed her by the neck and said, did you see Ellen is here? She was really scared.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah, she went home after.
Benito Skinner
Yeah, we had to drag you out.
Jake Shane
I was hooking up with a guy for the first time, mind you. Okay, yeah. Well, long story short, he farted.
Benito Skinner
Oh, wait, the guy can't fart, right?
Jake Shane
I don't know.
Benito Skinner
That one time I did fart when I was hooking up with Terry and I could not. We just started laughing. It was just like, in that moment, we were a couple of divas. Just.
Mary Beth Barone
It was during.
Benito Skinner
Do you know what I mean? It's like sometimes it's just. Just funny. Like this one guy DM'd me and he goes, oh, my God, this killed me. And he keeps sending me the craziest. He DM me. He was like, I want to. I want you and Terry to both.
Mary Beth Barone
No, I got that one.
Benito Skinner
You're gonna get a lot more.
Mary Beth Barone
I want to suck the fart out of your ass.
Jake Shane
People used to tell Ice Spice they wanted to drink her bath water.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah, it's insane.
Benito Skinner
Yeah, okay. But they said something about wanting to both of us. Like, we're both. I like, kind of on all fours. And I just had this picture of Terry and I both just spent over, like, just hanging out while this is happening. And I was just like, I would. That's just my good sis. Yeah, really. That would be. That's really fun. That's sweet.
Mary Beth Barone
It could be really fun.
Jake Shane
It could be really fun.
Benito Skinner
I can't think of anything that would be worse if I get out of my house. But in that moment with Terry, I think we'd. We'd make the most of it fun.
Mary Beth Barone
If a guy farted during sex, I think just like, be gracious, be gracious.
Jake Shane
My friend was giving heads.
Mary Beth Barone
Don't make it a big deal.
Jake Shane
I go.
Benito Skinner
You go. I know. That's right.
Jake Shane
Sorry.
Benito Skinner
You licked your teeth.
Mary Beth Barone
Oh, that had some stank on it.
Benito Skinner
Now, where'd that come from? Take up. So warm in this fucking room.
Jake Shane
Benny, I have sweat beads. Can we turn on the fan?
Benito Skinner
And we're gonna go to. People are gonna watch this and go. He can't get a word out. It's because they're all trapped in my low back, which is covered in sweat.
Jake Shane
Are you not dying?
Mary Beth Barone
No, I'm.
Benito Skinner
She's finally at the temperature she should be, mind you. We have literally done shows where we're on stage and I'm like, we have to get her a coat. She's blue.
Mary Beth Barone
I turned purple. It's really bad.
Benito Skinner
Okay. Oh, you can't imagine the clamminess. This. I'm not touching.
Jake Shane
I'm not.
Benito Skinner
I'm so clammy. I'm not touching a person for the rest of the day.
Mary Beth Barone
I can't stress this enough. I'm comfortable for once. A woman is comfortable.
Benito Skinner
God, just let her have it.
Jake Shane
Okay.
Benito Skinner
Oh, here we go.
Jake Shane
We have a Maybe, like, this person seems okay.
Benito Skinner
Let me have some of this nipple water first.
Jake Shane
Oh, do you want to hear something crazy that happened?
Benito Skinner
That's my one clip from them.
Mary Beth Barone
It's very Smile, too.
Benito Skinner
Okay. I have no. Literally. Oh, my God, she runs.
Mary Beth Barone
That's why I channeled on Drew Barrymore, by the way.
Benito Skinner
Oh.
Mary Beth Barone
When I had to chug.
Benito Skinner
That was so boss.
Mary Beth Barone
You put that down in two sips.
Jake Shane
What was up with her in Smile 2 and doing that?
Mary Beth Barone
Isn't it something choice?
Benito Skinner
Wait, no, I. I wasn't it. Her therapy, finally they made anxiety. Oh, yeah, yeah. It was a plot point. Because at first I thought it happened the first time, and I went, okay, I. That was because I think. I'm not kidding. I think she should have been nominated for a Golden Globe.
Mary Beth Barone
I agree.
Jake Shane
She was incredible.
Mary Beth Barone
Fabulous performance.
Benito Skinner
She is unbelievable in that movie. But the first time I saw it, I thought, holy. And I need someone to ask her, like, was she taking that down? It felt special effects to me.
Jake Shane
Yeah, I think.
Mary Beth Barone
But I think she's an actor's actor, and I think she was probably doing it.
Jake Shane
I think so, too. And imagine how many times she had to pee.
Benito Skinner
Exactly. Well, yeah, exactly. Imagine how many takes they go, hey.
Jake Shane
Sorry, we have to do it again.
Benito Skinner
We got to do it again. Get her another boss.
Jake Shane
Back.
Mary Beth Barone
Reset.
Benito Skinner
Her throat was so open in this. But yeah, it was a anxiety thing.
Jake Shane
Have you guys seen Trap?
Mary Beth Barone
No, no.
Benito Skinner
But someone told me the plot, and I. It was.
Jake Shane
Sounded okay. So it's M. Night Shyamalan. His daughter is the main character in the movie. You haven't seen the thing like, your dad is the butcher. You haven't seen that?
Mary Beth Barone
We've seen that. I feel like the trailer was the movie in a lot of ways.
Benito Skinner
It was.
Jake Shane
Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
And so I didn't feel the need to then watch the feature.
Benito Skinner
Right. Josh was such a big deal for me. Pearl harbor, going to Pearl harbor as a kid.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah.
Jake Shane
Oh, you went to Pearl Harbor.
Benito Skinner
Well, no, not the place I. You know, I would have loved going.
Mary Beth Barone
To the new one as a kid. He just loved that. World War II.
Benito Skinner
Mom and dad take me to Pearl Harbor.
Mary Beth Barone
He was trying to be straight. He was like, I love World War II.
Benito Skinner
No, but my dad was a history teacher at my high school, and so he, like, took his class to it, and so I went along, and I don't think he knew what I was gonna take from it, but.
Jake Shane
Oh, the movie.
Benito Skinner
Josh. Josh. What's it? Josh Hartnett. He. Oh, my God. He is lucky number 11.
Mary Beth Barone
I never saw. Never saw. I'm a fan. I think he's great. I wish he was in more stuff.
Benito Skinner
He's the killer, right?
Jake Shane
Of course. I mean, they tell you that in the.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah, in the trailer.
Benito Skinner
Is that in the trailer, too?
Jake Shane
Of course.
Benito Skinner
Oh, okay. Someone had said that, and I was like, all right, now I can't see it. But I hadn't seen the trailer.
Jake Shane
You gotta see it for M. Night Shyamalan's daughter's performance. Bring back the Razzies.
Mary Beth Barone
It's brave of you to say that.
Benito Skinner
Didn't you know Francis Ford Coppola? He. He was like, I'm going, this is amazing. He's like, sorry. It was very like, sorry for a girl taking a risk.
Mary Beth Barone
Yeah.
Benito Skinner
Once. He was kind of like, yeah, I made it. Made something.
Jake Shane
Was it Megatropolis? Was it that?
Benito Skinner
Yeah, Megatropolis. That's all right.
Mary Beth Barone
See that one without seeing the first one.
Jake Shane
What was the. What was it like?
Mary Beth Barone
Never.
Benito Skinner
You. You guys all have to watch it. I want to see it. Ombre Plaza's in it, right? Can't. It's very camp. And, like, he's touring the movie again. He's only gonna show it in theaters. Like, you can't really watch it at home, even. Oh, I'm in.
Mary Beth Barone
I'd be down. Yeah, we should go together.
Jake Shane
I haven't. I would love to. I haven't seen Sinners yet.
Benito Skinner
That. Oh, Sinners is amazing. Have you seen Babylon?
Jake Shane
No, but I know the Gaga song.
Benito Skinner
Watch it in Four parts on Air.
Jake Shane
France in four parts.
Mary Beth Barone
That feels very doable.
Benito Skinner
Do you know what I mean?
Mary Beth Barone
It feels very.
Benito Skinner
Babylon is not a one seater. And I think if Gatsby didn't exist and Once Upon a time in Hollywood, like, then Babylon would have been huge. That's my thing.
Jake Shane
Oh, you know what? Let's do this one. Because it can. I know what, I'll prescribe Amazon. Do I pick a college town or a big city? I love going out in the city, but I'm scared it's too big and harder to meet people. I also love the idea of everyone around me being a student and it being walkable in a college town.
Mary Beth Barone
Oh, that's a really good question.
Benito Skinner
Wait, so is this a college student? No, fully an adult male.
Mary Beth Barone
They're applying.
Benito Skinner
Oh, they're applying. Okay. Okay. So they're applying to school.
Mary Beth Barone
So this is a guy who's 42 and he wants to know if he should move to a town where it's all college students or a city.
Jake Shane
Right. I would prescribe overcompensating.
Mary Beth Barone
Absolutely.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
Watch the show. See what you could take from that. I think there's also. There are schools that feel like a college town, but they're like a. Adjacent to a city. Then you can go into the city when you want and. But you also have that, like, really community feel.
Jake Shane
Right.
Mary Beth Barone
So maybe split the difference.
Benito Skinner
DC Was good for that because it could be like we had a little bubble and then you just kind of go out or like.
Jake Shane
Boston is great. Boston's. Boston's the best college town.
Benito Skinner
It really is.
Jake Shane
Where'd you go again?
Mary Beth Barone
Boston College, famously. Only for two years, but, yeah, I had my fun up there. Just a little small.
Benito Skinner
You left your mark. Make impact.
Mary Beth Barone
I'm waiting to be asked to be commencement speaker, so you have to.
Benito Skinner
You.
Mary Beth Barone
I'm just. I want my honorary degree.
Jake Shane
Okay. Well, you guys, what did we learn today? You too?
Mary Beth Barone
I feel like what I learned and what is going to stay with me is that Ellen was at the premiere.
Benito Skinner
Yeah. So Ellen had to come and pay her respects. Overcompensating, that means.
Mary Beth Barone
And that means the world. Yeah, we appreciate it. Yeah. I mean, that's fainting.
Benito Skinner
Oh, my God. We barely talked about that. Yeah, there is.
Jake Shane
It's the fainting epidemic.
Benito Skinner
Yeah, of course.
Mary Beth Barone
Don't herpes. Shame.
Benito Skinner
Yeah.
Mary Beth Barone
Don't kick.
Benito Skinner
Get a house slipper, preferably. So fabulous.
Mary Beth Barone
Wear them in.
Benito Skinner
Watch. Overcompensating. There's so many shows out there too, so maybe watch the OC Watch.
Jake Shane
I want you to watch The OC But I've learned that today. I do need to finish overcompensating the second you guys leave.
Benito Skinner
Please, darling. We have some good stuff in there for you.
Mary Beth Barone
Thanks for taking the time to talk to us.
Benito Skinner
Oh, the sink thing. I think the sink actually is what it's.
Jake Shane
It is a sink. Yeah, it is a sink. And I want that to be what you learned.
Mary Beth Barone
Hey, hey. I'll take it.
Benito Skinner
Hey, guys can still teach you some stuff.
Jake Shane
A needle drop is also correct. But a needle drop is like when it goes. Goes into the credits. Right.
Benito Skinner
See, that's what I thought too. It's kind of like.
Jake Shane
But it's also just like a moment.
Mary Beth Barone
Well, maybe people have been misusing it towards me, so I've internalized that. And so we're gonna get to the bottom of this.
Jake Shane
Like, for example, when they do. When they play team by Lord and the in the first episode, that's not a needle drop. That's a sink.
Mary Beth Barone
Okay.
Jake Shane
It's been explained a needle drop would be like season one, episode three of Girls when they play Dancing on my own.
Mary Beth Barone
Right.
Jake Shane
And it goes straight into credit. You know, that's like a needle drop.
Benito Skinner
Yeah. Or like before a fight scene or something.
Jake Shane
Yeah, yeah.
Benito Skinner
It's like a big. It's. Yeah. Like, welcome to the black par. More of like a needle drop.
Jake Shane
Drop in the ocean. Vampire Diaries. Okay.
Benito Skinner
Hey, you're going to get it. You're in a gown. She wore a gown for you, Jake.
Jake Shane
For sewing the up today.
Benito Skinner
Of course.
Mary Beth Barone
I have to. I mean, if I'm going to make a triumphant return to therapist, I'm going to do it with flare in chair.
Benito Skinner
We did it in chair.
Mary Beth Barone
We did it in chair.
Benito Skinner
Jake, thank you so much for having us.
Jake Shane
I love you guys.
Benito Skinner
This was. We love you. Will you come to campus with us if we get a season two? A season two.
Jake Shane
Please. Season two season.
Benito Skinner
You're so cute.
Jake Shane
I love you guys.
Benito Skinner
Wait, you need to get.
Jake Shane
I know.
Benito Skinner
That's what I want. That's a huge takeaway. Like, come on. I think you're working too much. That's what I. I think I know, but.
Jake Shane
Okay. Yeah, I think I need to get. I need to do it.
Benito Skinner
Yes.
Jake Shane
I need to do it. Or.
Benito Skinner
I mean, I'm not. I'm not assuming anything. Absolutely. I love you.
Mary Beth Barone
And I have nothing to say on that.
Benito Skinner
No.
Jake Shane
You guys give a little. Bye.
Benito Skinner
Bye.
Mary Beth Barone
Thanks for having us, letting us into your world.
Benito Skinner
Come here. Here.
Therapuss with Jake Shane
Episode: Session 74: Ride x Therapuss
Release Date: May 23, 2025
In Session 74: Ride x Therapuss, host Jake Shane welcomes two beloved guests, Benito Skinner and Mary Beth Barone, stars of the Amazon Prime original series Overcompensating and hosts of the podcast Ride. This episode combines their unique perspectives and experiences, offering listeners an engaging blend of humor, personal anecdotes, and insightful discussions.
The conversation kicks off with a playful debate about full glam makeup. Mary Beth proudly announces, “I did full glam. They said, you're not allowed to wear a gown to a podcast. And I said, watch me” (01:58). Benito chimes in with humor, critiquing the lack of bronzer on some male guests: “I'm like. A little bronzer would have helped... Like concealer” (02:24). This segues into a light-hearted exchange about pimples and herpes, aiming to normalize conversations around such topics.
Mary Beth Barone: “Don't watch Bravo.”
Benito Skinner: “He’s wearing a wig.”
A significant part of the discussion revolves around destigmatizing herpes. Jake emphasizes, “We’re trying to normalize” (02:55), while Benito humorously laments the frequency of his cold sores: “I can’t believe you’re calling that a pimple” (02:44). The trio highlights the importance of open dialogue to reduce stigma.
Jake Shane: “No, everyone has herpes.”
Mary Beth shares a personal story about fainting: “I felt so sick... I must have just, like, passed out on the back floor” (09:05). Benito relates by recounting instances where friends fainted after medical procedures, adding humor to an otherwise concerning experience.
Mary Beth Barone: “Next thing I know, I woke up and my head was three throbbing.”
The guests delve into their experiences filming Overcompensating. Benito reflects on writing scripts years prior and the surreal feeling of seeing Mary Beth as his sister for the first time: “I felt like... this is so crazy” (15:03). They discuss memorable moments from the set, including emoji-laden stories and the creative process behind their characters.
Mary Beth Barone: “We cried. Yeah.”
Transitioning to their passion for stand-up comedy, Mary Beth explains how she discovered her love for it through improv classes: “I started taking improv classes... and I decided I was like, wait, this is so fun” (23:38). She mentions upcoming gigs in New York and the Hamptons, while Benito praises her comedic talent.
Benito Skinner: “I have nothing to add. What a perfect moment in television.”
The conversation shifts to their recent press tour experiences. Jake shares a hilarious encounter where he believes he saw an Ellen DeGeneres lookalike at the Overcompensating premiere: “There was someone that was so strikingly similar to Ellen” (39:10). This sparks a humorous debate about the authenticity of the lookalike and their reactions during the event.
Jake Shane: “Is that not Ellen DeGeneres?”
Jake opens up about a friend obsessed with male attention, prompting Benito and Mary Beth to offer advice on handling such dynamics. They discuss the complexities of friendships intersecting with romantic interests and the importance of clear communication.
Mary Beth Barone: “What are you trying to gain from it?”
Addressing common challenges, the trio advises on navigating social interactions upon returning to one's hometown. Mary Beth suggests practical solutions like wearing masks and using accessories to maintain privacy: “A mask and a hat and sunglasses” (49:45). Benito and Jake share their strategies for avoiding uncomfortable encounters, emphasizing the importance of self-care and boundary-setting.
Mary Beth Barone: “Actors, vibes.”
As the episode wraps up, Jake, Benito, and Mary Beth reflect on their discussions, emphasizing the importance of normalization, self-expression, and maintaining healthy relationships. They reiterate key lessons learned and encourage listeners to engage with their projects.
Jake Shane: “Love you guys.”
