Jake
Hey, guys. We're back with another episode of Therapists. And today we have rising star serious actor Meg Stalter on.
Meg Stalter
Thank you so much, Jake.
Jake
Thank you. Oh, congratulations on everything.
Meg Stalter
Thank you. That means a lot to me. Do you remember that night?
Jake
Oh, sorry. We're already going there.
Meg Stalter
I just. I never get to do interviews with such a close friend.
Jake
I know, I know.
Meg Stalter
Sorry, I'm kind of a mess today. It's my day with the kids this year.
Jake
Oh, it is?
Meg Stalter
Yeah.
Jake
This year.
Meg Stalter
Yeah. I've been running around with them. They're in the car.
Jake
Did you lock them in?
Meg Stalter
Well, I. Yeah, I'm not a horrible mother.
Jake
I have so many things to catch up with you on.
Meg Stalter
First of all, so excited to be. Sorry I cut you off.
Jake
No, that's okay. I heard you were amazing. I heard you were amazing on set. Everyone loved you, but you won't. You won't call anyone back.
Meg Stalter
I'm a hard friend to keep. I. I feel we give ourselves so much to our jobs. Sorry.
Jake
It's okay. Take your time.
Meg Stalter
We give ourselves away at this job, and I don't have the capacity for every little single. Oh, hello. You know, we'll go to lunch. We'll go to lunch. Yeah. Okay. What are you doing for Christmas? I don't have. And a lot of actors don't. And that. That. That. That is where we struggle. Yeah, I. I mean, you don't get into this business because you. Your. Your heart's full.
Jake
Why'd you get into this business?
Meg Stalter
So how have you been?
Jake
Oh, I've been good. I've been good. I've been good. I've been hanging out a lot with Claire Danes.
Meg Stalter
Oh.
Jake
She told me some stu.
Meg Stalter
What did they say?
Jake
She said that you broke her heart.
Meg Stalter
I hate to call her that, but it's an inside joke. We did have an affair.
Jake
You did? Was it.
Meg Stalter
What's your next question?
Jake
Well, I've also been spending a lot of time with the Fanning sisters. They are not big fans of You.
Meg Stalter
I don't want to talk about them.
Jake
You don't?
Meg Stalter
Yeah. Especially Dakota.
Jake
Why not?
Meg Stalter
I'll say there has been a couple of roles that we both went out for.
Jake
Oh, okay.
Meg Stalter
And let's just say I'd be acting sooner if I got some of those.
Jake
Oh, okay. So it's.
Meg Stalter
Yeah. Uptown Girl.
Jake
Oh, she was living.
Meg Stalter
Why are you bringing up so many people that, like. I'm sorry. Are you interviewing me or you're interviewing Elle? I'm like, what's going on?
Jake
Sorry. I'm sorry.
Meg Stalter
I'm trying to do a got you interview.
Jake
No, I'm sorry.
Meg Stalter
Sorry. Speaking of got you, I did this because we're friends.
Jake
I know. I'm sorry, Meg. I know. We are friends.
Meg Stalter
I don't even really have time.
Jake
I know. You have no time.
Meg Stalter
Sometimes it's not as easy just to stop by as you think.
Jake
No, I know. That's what everyone says about you.
Meg Stalter
Are we going to talk about sort of anything about me?
Jake
Well, you just got cast.
Meg Stalter
I'm like. I feel like. Yeah, go ahead.
Jake
You just got cast in the new horror movie Gotcha.
Meg Stalter
Yeah. Are you an interviewer? Are you my manager telling me what's on the upcoming schedule? We always have so much fun with you. Do you remember at Donny Roney's mag, you ate so many of the pieces of pizza with me?
Jake
I know.
Meg Stalter
So many meat eaters there.
Jake
I know.
Meg Stalter
You ate the ones with the meat, and so there was only veggie left.
Jake
I know, but I was. I know. And then, you know, they got mad at me. Yeah, they all got mad.
Meg Stalter
So what was your question?
Jake
So you have one of the best screams in Hollywood.
Meg Stalter
Gotcha.
Jake
You're. Is that how you got the role for the new Gotcha movie?
Meg Stalter
Not really allowed to talk about.
Jake
Oh, okay. Sorry. I just read Deadline, so I just assumed.
Meg Stalter
Well, the trailer's not out.
Jake
Okay, well, but they said Deadline's always.
Meg Stalter
Releasing stuff before we want it to be released.
Jake
Does that happen to you before?
Meg Stalter
No.
Jake
Okay.
Meg Stalter
And how.
Jake
How was shooting in London? You enjoyed it?
Meg Stalter
I didn't like it.
Jake
Oh, really? Why didn't you like it?
Meg Stalter
Nasty.
Jake
Nasty, yeah.
Meg Stalter
People are nasty there.
Jake
What would they do to you?
Meg Stalter
You know, like, walking down the street, grabbing their bags in. Have you been there?
Jake
A few times.
Meg Stalter
Big, big traveler sometimes, you know. You know that people around the scene call you brag a lot?
Jake
Oh, that's. That's what they call me.
Meg Stalter
Yeah.
Jake
What. What else. What do you say to defend me? Behind clothes?
Meg Stalter
If the shoe fits.
Jake
Oh, the shoe fits.
Meg Stalter
Yeah. I guess it doesn't.
Jake
Guess it doesn't. Not today.
Meg Stalter
What size are you?
Jake
Eight and a half. What size are you?
Meg Stalter
I don't want to tell you that.
Jake
Okay. Private pervert. Oh, that's. Okay.
Meg Stalter
So what did Claire say?
Jake
Claire said that it was really hot and heavy. We can cut this if you want, but she said it was really hot and heavy.
Meg Stalter
I don't want to cut it.
Jake
Okay. She said you guys went to Capri together.
Meg Stalter
Yeah.
Jake
And she said you hated it. You just couldn't deal with the Italians. She said.
Meg Stalter
I. Let's just say I belong in Ohio because I have a hard time traveling. But I need to tell you that there is something in this business called opening up your heart to people. I was single at the time. And then I was married when I met her.
Jake
And you had kids?
Meg Stalter
Yeah. And I was single at the time. Then I met. I got married. Then I met Claire on set. Things happened. It's not something that always happens. Yeah, we haven't. We had an affair. It's not something that people don't do.
Jake
Right.
Meg Stalter
So to. To sit here and say, yeah, I didn't, you know. Well, I did. It ruined my marriage.
Jake
And what you're.
Meg Stalter
And then we got back together.
Jake
And what'd your kids think of her? Have they met her?
Meg Stalter
Yeah, she comes over all the time.
Jake
Still?
Meg Stalter
Yeah.
Jake
So you're still having an affair?
Meg Stalter
Yeah.
Jake
Okay.
Meg Stalter
Sometimes. Sometimes people are. Have little rules about their own marriage. What were your rules? Don't tell, don't ask.
Jake
Don't tell, don't ask, don't tell.
Meg Stalter
And then tell.
Jake
And then.
Meg Stalter
And then ask. Ask about it.
Jake
Okay. Well, do you guys ever think you'd get married? You and Claire dance?
Meg Stalter
I don't think that she's someone that would do something like that. You know, as much as. As we like to play. I mean, at the end of the day, she always says the same thing. I don't want to break up a marriage again like I did the first time with you.
Jake
So are you married again?
Meg Stalter
I've re. Redone my vows. My husband and what he does behind closed doors. I don't want to know about it.
Jake
Well, I think all of Hollywood knows.
Meg Stalter
What the hell do you mean by that?
Jake
You know what I mean. Meg.
Meg Stalter
Hey, look at me. Don't around with me.
Jake
Okay? I'm sorry.
Meg Stalter
Okay. What do you mean by that?
Jake
You know what I mean.
Meg Stalter
What did MILF do?
Jake
He's, you know, around Hollywood a bit.
Meg Stalter
Really? Now. With who? Drew Barrymore.
Jake
Drew? Um.
Meg Stalter
I guess the. Right. The first time who else?
Jake
Kelly Clarkson.
Meg Stalter
Let's talk more about my career. Okay. Because I. I really don't want to do this today.
Jake
Okay. We don't have to make it comfortable. Okay. Well, who. So you have your kids once a year.
Meg Stalter
Yeah.
Jake
Do they ever come visit you on set?
Meg Stalter
You know, I really don't want them on set bothering me during work. And, you know, it is weird that I. Me and my husband don't have custody of them, but, you know, things went down. I don't want them to grow up in a home where two of the parents are fighting.
Jake
So the husband. Your husband doesn't have a custody of them either?
Meg Stalter
No.
Jake
So who has custody?
Meg Stalter
My aunt.
Jake
Okay.
Meg Stalter
But, yeah, I just love acting, I think, you know, sometimes it's hard, I guess, not to take your work home.
Jake
I. I've heard you have trouble not being able to, like, not come out of your character anymore.
Meg Stalter
I feel like sometimes it's not a choice.
Jake
Oh, tell me more.
Meg Stalter
When you. I don't want to say you. But you're not an actor. Well, you are. You have been in some things. Do you consider yourself an actor?
Jake
I consider myself a performer of sorts.
Meg Stalter
So it's sort of like you're putting a hat on. I am the hat.
Jake
Whoa.
Meg Stalter
And sometimes it is not to get out of the. Okay. It's not a choice.
Jake
Right.
Meg Stalter
Do I come, I go home? Yeah. I'm still walking like the character, you know, and I have to shake it off a bit. I feel like that's something that I. I feel Demi Morris said.
Jake
Well, I heard you were up for the substance. I was, but they said you couldn't get out of the character enough. Like when you were going into the audition as the character, you were leaving as the character. Is it true your kids call you by the name of the character on your once a year custody visit?
Meg Stalter
Well, let's just say they don't call me.
Jake
I wish they did call me in there. That's Hollywood.
Meg Stalter
Yeah. I feel like sometimes, you know, I've never actually told them my real name, so. So sometimes they probably think my character's name is my name.
Jake
Right.
Meg Stalter
But other than that, I mean, yeah, they didn't call me whatever the hell they want to.
Jake
Right.
Meg Stalter
And I've told them that I said, you can call mommy whatever the hell you want to. And. And that has led to them. Britney.
Jake
Right.
Meg Stalter
You know, whatever new character I've.
Jake
Jessica.
Meg Stalter
Yeah. But. Yeah. What. What else for you?
Jake
Well, I would say, you know, how.
Meg Stalter
Long have you Such a mess?
Jake
How long have you been training for, you know, everyone trained.
Meg Stalter
How long have I been training for? What?
Jake
Like, training, like in acting school?
Meg Stalter
Yeah. You know, I've watched a lot for. Ever since I was little. I was watching videos about, like, different shows and stuff.
Jake
Videos about the shows or the show?
Meg Stalter
Like, just like TV shows.
Jake
Okay.
Meg Stalter
And movies. And I've just. I. I remember my teacher said call used to call me Little Miss Movie because I was always wanting to watch a movie or. And so, I mean, and also, acting is kind of like whatever you. You know. Right now I'm training.
Jake
What are you training for right now?
Meg Stalter
No, I just mean just human behavior. I mean, I'm watching you. I'm kind of trying to sit like you a little bit.
Jake
Right. That you're playing me now.
Meg Stalter
Yeah, yeah. Just. It's just human behavior, so I, I don't think it's. You're never, like, really not training to do that. Sorry, I start crying again.
Jake
No, don't cry. No. You know what, though? The performance is so powerful. I get it.
Meg Stalter
No, I mean, maybe I weren't comfortable on the floor.
Jake
Oh, that's okay. Do you want me to sit with you?
Meg Stalter
Yeah. Okay. Or you don't have to. Okay. Yeah. But go ahead if you want. But I feel, I. I feel like it's so hard for me to. To even begin to think about, like, okay, they're in the car.
Jake
Is the AC on?
Meg Stalter
Yeah. And the nanny's in there. But I go, what do they even. What kind of. Do you think that one role that I have not mastered is Play mother. Warm, warm hands. Yeah.
Jake
Do you think one day you'll be able to master it?
Meg Stalter
No, that's okay. Yeah.
Jake
And you're doing your best. You know, we're all doing our best.
Meg Stalter
I think when you're such a female online, people just want to rip you apart. I don't get her. She's fat.
Jake
And what do you say to that?
Meg Stalter
Okay. Yeah. Because I, I. Does it bother me that not everyone likes my performance? Yes.
Jake
Piss you off?
Meg Stalter
Yeah. Is it upsetting to me when people write me messages? Yeah, it is. Because as actors, we want to be palatable.
Jake
Right.
Meg Stalter
You know, otherwise it's like, what. What are we doing here if we're not liked by everyone?
Jake
And how do you feel that?
Meg Stalter
You go ahead and say that. Ask your question. I feel like you've been nervous around interviewing me.
Jake
You're just the biggest star we've ever had. You know, it took. It took a while to agree to this.
Meg Stalter
Biggest, like, fattest.
Jake
Your publicist was being quite difficult yeah, he is.
Meg Stalter
He does misbehave a lot. And that's why I like him. Yeah, I keep him around, you know, that's why I keep him around. Because every single person on my team is naughty.
Jake
What do you mean by naughty?
Meg Stalter
Has been arrested.
Jake
For what?
Meg Stalter
I don't ask.
Jake
Don't.
Meg Stalter
I don't want to know. You know what you doing? You're pushing the time. I don't want to know. I don't want to know.
Jake
Right.
Meg Stalter
You know what they're doing in their personal time.
Jake
Are you able to share with us who your co star is for? Got you to.
Meg Stalter
No.
Jake
Okay. Can you give me a hint?
Meg Stalter
No. Keegan and Peel.
Jake
Okay.
Meg Stalter
And you're is a hint.
Jake
It's a hint. It's not them.
Meg Stalter
Yeah.
Jake
Okay. And have you been practicing your scream?
Meg Stalter
You know what? I. This is so funny about me. I'll tell you. So I never rehearse anything ever? No. And so that way in the scene. I'm surprised.
Jake
What do you buy your own actions?
Meg Stalter
Mostly. When I get to set, I'm going.
Jake
I'm going straight down the snacks.
Meg Stalter
The. The public got one thing right about me and that's a lot to eat because I'm going to the snacks. I'm relaxing. That's my. That's my mommy time. That's my.
Jake
That's your mommy time.
Meg Stalter
Yeah.
Jake
So what's now for your kids?
Meg Stalter
What was that? What's now for my kids?
Jake
Yeah.
Meg Stalter
What do you mean, what's now?
Jake
What are you doing for the rest of the day with them? You know you're taking them.
Meg Stalter
What's now for my kids? That's how you asked me what my plans were for the day. Yeah. Okay. We're gonna go to a pottery class and I'm gonna have them each make a little something for me.
Jake
I thought your kids were two.
Meg Stalter
Yeah, first of all, they're not all too.
Jake
How old are they that.
Meg Stalter
I just knew you would be asking such a personal question.
Jake
Sorry. I'm sorry.
Meg Stalter
No. You're not going to know how old my kids are.
Jake
Oh, okay.
Meg Stalter
Get off there. I mean, why does it even matter to you?
Jake
I'm just curious. You know, I have a nephew.
Meg Stalter
How old is he?
Jake
Three.
Meg Stalter
Okay, that's inappropriate to tell me. Who is what age. I mean, next is what you're going to ask me how old I am. 46.
Jake
No, but I heard that you were born premature.
Meg Stalter
All right, I'm out of here. You don't tell people when people are born premature.
Jake
You are. You told. You said you made It a whole thing.
Meg Stalter
You don't tell people that because that's my business. Okay.
Jake
Okay. Sit back down. Hey, sorry.
Meg Stalter
Else you want to ask me?
Jake
I want to ask you what was it like.
Meg Stalter
Being. What? What?
Jake
What was it? What was it like? What was it like? You know what? Filming in Scotland. Forgot ya.
Meg Stalter
Yeah.
Jake
Which by the way, I read in Deadline, so.
Meg Stalter
Okay, I'm gonna ask you to stop talking about the movie.
Jake
Okay.
Meg Stalter
Okay. And I'm gonna stop talking about Deadline, okay. Unless this is a Deadline commercial. Okay. Because I love that. I love that you know, that magazine. But I. I'm not gonna just sit here and just repeat everything because you just go read it. But yeah, can you read so I can read. I saw you do this to that person from Glee. I saw you do that. So this I'm not just another, you know, brown haired girl that you're going to say that to. Yeah, I can read university. Those are diplomas. And that's a magazine.
Jake
Right?
Meg Stalter
Diplomas magazine, Big book.
Jake
What's your favorite book? Well, I heard you're a big reader on set though. I did hear that you like to like will listen audiobooks, which is why I asked if you could read.
Meg Stalter
But my favorite book is Jamie Lee Curtis's book.
Jake
Really?
Meg Stalter
Yeah.
Jake
You remind me a lot of her.
Meg Stalter
Thing. You could say. I love her.
Jake
You guys are close?
Meg Stalter
Yes. They were gonna replace Lindsay Lohan with me if she didn't get her act together.
Jake
Yep, that's what I heard.
Meg Stalter
So good news for her, bad news for me.
Jake
Were you upset?
Meg Stalter
Yes.
Jake
How do you take rejection?
Meg Stalter
I don't take it. What do you mean not take it? I go into one of those rooms where you destroy the things in the car and I just freak out.
Jake
I heard.
Meg Stalter
I think. Let me talk.
Jake
Okay.
Meg Stalter
When I'm rejected, I look in the mirror and I go, no, no, no. This is not happening to you. This is not happening to you. This is not happening to you. This is not happening to you. I call my publicist and let's change things. Call them back. And if that doesn't work, I go into one of those destroy. What are those rooms called?
Jake
A destroyed room.
Meg Stalter
A destroy room. And I destroy everything inside. And I go home, I order my usual Panera bread and go to sleep. Wake up the next day and I try again.
Jake
And do you. What's your order from Panera?
Meg Stalter
Three bread bowls.
Jake
I love a bread bowl.
Meg Stalter
Yeah?
Jake
Yeah.
Meg Stalter
If you like one, you're gonna love three. How have you been?
Jake
Oh, you know, I've been fine. I've Been dating around.
Meg Stalter
Who are you?
Jake
D. Just a few people out of the industry. Yeah, it's hard to date in our industry. It's hard.
Meg Stalter
Not really.
Jake
Okay.
Meg Stalter
Because. Yeah. I mean, I've never had a problem. My husband is out of the industry now, but he was in the industry.
Jake
I mean, are we gonna say it? John Stamos?
Meg Stalter
Well, I told you earlier, it was Mel. Me and John aren't together anymore.
Jake
Oh, sorry.
Meg Stalter
That was my first marriage. My second. Okay. But me and John remain friends. He's given me a lot of Full House memorabilia over the years. Yeah. I would get back together of him if me and Mel didn't work out, but I. Yeah, I mean, you know how people are so into John Stamos. Let's just say that they had a right to be.
Jake
It was a good time. So what happened?
Meg Stalter
Sorry. I saw him the other day on his motorcycle.
Jake
Oh, you did?
Meg Stalter
And came out the house and he said, what are you doing around my block? He said, I needed to drop something off. And I said, why don't you come in? Mel's not here. And he had this package and he came inside and I said, what's in the package? And he said, you know what's in the package? Your old panties dirty? Yeah.
Jake
Yeah.
Meg Stalter
And I was like, my husband's gonna kill your ass. He's gonna shoot you in the head three times. And was John scared? Yeah.
Jake
Do you still drop him off?
Meg Stalter
He did.
Jake
So what'd you tell now?
Meg Stalter
Lie to my husband, I said.
Jake
Seems to be a theme.
Meg Stalter
I've been cam girling again and I. These are for the guys I've been talking to. He was cool with it. Sorry.
Jake
It's okay. You just. Look, you just ground yourself sometimes.
Meg Stalter
That's what I was doing with John.
Jake
With John hand sliding and you just. You.
Meg Stalter
You told Mel not get those shoes back on.
Jake
Okay. Sorry.
Meg Stalter
No, I'm kidding.
Jake
Okay.
Meg Stalter
So who have you been with?
Jake
You know, I haven't had sex in a while. Almost infamously at this rate.
Meg Stalter
How long has it been?
Jake
Two years.
Meg Stalter
We're going to order lunch. Yeah.
Jake
What do you want? Well, I heard preemies are often allergic to.
Meg Stalter
Are you kidding? What are you doing right now?
Jake
Sorry, I just.
Meg Stalter
But yeah, so.
Jake
Well, you know what, Mag? Think just.
Meg Stalter
I cannot believe that what I did.
Jake
What'd you do last summer, John?
Meg Stalter
I cannot believe I did it again. I feel like it's finally hit me that I need to stop.
Jake
I think maybe you and Mel should file.
Meg Stalter
File for what?
Jake
The divorce.
Meg Stalter
That's what.
Jake
I didn't everyone's talking about it.
Meg Stalter
I just want to say, like, it means so much to me that you had me on here. I mean, people, I just. You've always had a bit of a crush on me.
Jake
Stop.
Meg Stalter
Well, you really have.
Jake
I know.
Meg Stalter
And I just think you're such a stud. And I. I truly, truly want you to know, you know, if. If. If this doesn't work out and that doesn't work out, I'm calling you.
Jake
And you know what? And for you, I'll always answer.
Meg Stalter
Aww.
Jake
I love you, man.
Meg Stalter
I mean, you've always been super flirty and sexual with me.
Jake
Yeah, You've been looking really, really good.
Meg Stalter
Thank you. I've gotten a couple facelifts.
Jake
Oh, you have a couple?
Meg Stalter
Yeah, and I have got my boobies done. And to make him look more natural.
Jake
Does Mel like that or. No. Because he's gay.
Meg Stalter
Okay, what did you just say? Why did you say he was gay?
Jake
Because I thought. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
Meg Stalter
What made you say that my husband was gay?
Jake
Well, I'm sorry. I thought when I was talking about the rumors that. That, you know, it was like we understood that that's what they were.
Meg Stalter
He wasn't gay when he was eating my ass last night.
Jake
Oh, he wasn't? So I just heard he has a lot of callers.
Meg Stalter
What did that. What does that mean?
Jake
A lot of male callers.
Meg Stalter
You've even asked one question about my acting.
Jake
Okay.
Meg Stalter
So, okay. Have you hooked up with Mel? Have you hooked up with my husband? You tell me right now if you hooked up with him now.
Jake
It was in France.
Meg Stalter
Okay, I didn't know you were gay. You called me a smoke show when we walked in.
Jake
Well, you are a smokeshow.
Meg Stalter
Okay, well, the show's over.
Jake
Okay, well, thanks, everyone. Give it up for everyone. Yeah, everyone ever give it up for mega.
