Hello, I'm Dan Jones. I'm a medieval historian and I'm going to tell you a story about England's greatest warrior king. Now, when you spend lots of time in the royal archives like me, you're bound to have your favourites and those you loathe. Richard ii, an absolutely craven, delusional narcissist. Edward ii, a romantic whose wandering eye almost cost the kingdom. And King John, well, thanks to his bungles, we now have Magna Carta. But if you want to know who my favourite is, it has to be Henry V. Because you know when you survive an arrow shot to the face like he did, you don't waste your second chance. Henry's daring, incredibly ambitious. And gives England a new level of power and prestige it hasn't seen for generations, if at all. After bruising military battles, Henry restores English rule in France, expanding English territories further than ever before. You might remember the big one, Agincourt. Even Shakespeare wrote about it. At home, Henry navigates conspiracy theories, power hungry insurgents and drunken political scandals. Oh, and manages to produce an heir that is the first and only English monarch to be crowned King of France. So, over 12 exhilarating episodes, we'll trace the story of a king who goes on to become a legend in his own lifetime and whose mythology continues to echo in the present. But I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Unbeknownst to Henry, there's an original sin that will undo everything he fought for. But that's for you to discover on season eight of this Is History, A Dynasty to die for. Episode one will be in your feeds next Tuesday, September 16th. Subscribers. And yes, I'm looking at you royal favourites. We'll get episode two and all bonus episodes on the same day, so don't miss out. Subscribe via patreon.com thisishistory.
