Take and hang them in the sun before the Lord, that the fierce anger of the Lord may turn away from Israel. And Moses said to the judges of Israel, each of you kill those of his men who have yoked themselves to BAAL a peor. of the tent of meeting. When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, the priest, saw it, he rose and left the congregation and took a spear in his hand and went after the man of Israel into the chamber and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman, through her belly. Thus the plague on the people of Israel was stopped. Nevertheless, those who died by the plague were 24,000. And the Lord said to Moses, Phinehas the son of Eleazar, said, son of Aaron, the priest has turned back my wrath from the people of Israel, and that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the people of Israel in my jealousy.

When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you for the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence. With the glory that I had with you before the world existed, I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you. And they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those whom you have given me. For they are yours, all mine are yours, and yours are mine. And I am glorified in them. And I am no longer in the world. But they are in the world. And I am coming to you, Holy Father. Keep them in your name, which you have given Me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them and not one of them has been lost, except the Son of Destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you. And these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them your Word and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the Evil One. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth.

so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself that they also may be sanctified in truth. I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. Just as you, Father, are in Me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me, I have given to them that they may be one, even as we are one, I in them, and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and love them even as you loved me. Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am to see my glory that you have given me. Because you loved me before the foundation of the world. Episode: March 22 (Numbers 25–26; Psalm 75; John 17)
Host: Crossway
Date: March 22, 2026
This episode continues the daily journey through the ESV Bible, featuring readings from Numbers 25–26, Psalm 75, and John 17. Today’s selections highlight Israel’s grave failure with idolatry and judgment, a subsequent census in preparation for inheritance, a psalm of thanksgiving and divine justice, and the full prayer of Jesus for His followers and those who will believe through them.
Idolatry and Plague (00:01–02:08):
Israel falls into sexual immorality and idolatry with Moabite women, worshipping Baal of Peor.
God commands severe judgment: leaders are to be executed, and 24,000 die in a resulting plague.
Phinehas stops the plague with an act of zeal, killing an Israelite man and a Midianite woman engaged in open sin.
God commends Phinehas, granting him a “covenant of peace” and a perpetual priesthood.
The Midianites are to be struck down as a result of their role in Israel’s corruption.
“Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, the priest, has turned back my wrath from the people of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the people of Israel in my jealousy.” — Reader (01:15)
Second Census and Inheritance (02:08–10:06):
God instructs Moses and Eleazar to conduct a census of fighting-age men for each tribe.
The tribes and their clan lineages are recounted, showing how many remain after the wilderness journey.
Notably, the text highlights the daughters of Zelophehad, foreshadowing future inheritance rulings.
The total count of Israel’s men of fighting age is 601,730 (excluding Levites), reflecting the losses and continuity from previous generations.
None from the previous generation survived except Caleb and Joshua.
Land is to be distributed equitably, “by lot,” among the tribes.
The Levites are counted separately, with their unique inheritance and responsibilities remarked upon.
“But among these there was not one of those listed by Moses and Aaron the priest, who had listed the people of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai. For the Lord had said of them, ‘They shall die in the wilderness.’ Not one of them was left except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.” — Reader (09:55)
Thanksgiving for God’s Nearness (10:06–10:25):
Warning to the Proud and Wicked (10:25–10:53):
God’s sovereignty is emphasized; He alone exalts and brings low.
The “cup of wine” metaphor for judgment upon the wicked: all must drink it to the dregs.
God will “cut off the horns of the wicked” and “lift up the horns of the righteous.”
“For not from the east or from the west, and not from the wilderness comes lifting up. But it is God who executes judgment, putting down one and lifting up another.” — Reader (10:29)
Jesus’ Prayer for Glory and Mission (11:03–12:10):
Jesus lifts His eyes to heaven: asks the Father to glorify Him so that He may glorify the Father.
He defines eternal life as knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom He has sent.
Jesus completes His earthly mission and asks to return to the original glory with the Father.
“And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” — Jesus (11:12)
Jesus Prays for the Disciples’ Protection (12:10–12:52):
Jesus intercedes for His disciples’ unity and protection.
He acknowledges the challenges: “the world has hated them because they are not of the world.”
Prays not for removal but for their sanctuary: “keep them from the Evil One.”
He sanctifies them in the truth, declaring “Your word is truth.”
“I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the Evil One. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” — Jesus (12:45)
Jesus Prays for All Believers (12:55–13:44):
Extends His prayer to all who believe through the apostles’ message.
Core desire: “that they may all be one … so that the world may believe.”
Asks for the love shared between the Father and Son to be present in His followers, culminating in a vision of ultimate heavenly unity and love.
“Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory … because you loved me before the foundation of the world.” — Jesus (13:33)
Decisiveness of Phinehas’ Zeal (Numbers 25):
Eternal Life Defined by Relationship (John 17):
On Divine Sovereignty in Judgment (Psalm 75):
Jesus’ Vision for Unity (John 17):
The readings today are solemn but infused with the hope of restoration, justice, and unity. The language is formal, scriptural, with sharp depictions of sin’s consequence, God’s justice, and Christ’s intercessory love. The tone transitions from the severity of Numbers to the worshipful trust of the Psalm, ending with the profound intimacy and unity of Jesus’ prayer.
This episode captures a dramatic pivot in Israel’s journey—judgment and renewal, warning and reassurance. Through Numbers, listeners witness consequences for unfaithfulness and the hope of an inherited promise. Psalm 75 reminds the community that God alone upholds the world and enacts justice. Finally, John 17 offers the deep comfort and challenge of Jesus praying for His followers’ unity, protection, sanctification, and ultimate communion with the Father and Son. It’s a powerful meditation on faithfulness, judgment, and divine love spanning both testaments.
