Donnell Rawlings
Young man, what time is it? 12:55. I have a one o' clock. Heart out. Gonna be the shortest podcast in the history of podcast. Young man, how are you, sir?
Bobby Lee
Hello, young man.
Donnell Rawlings
No eye contact.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, I'm not gonna talk to you. All right. Yeah, yeah. Your energy, dude. Sometimes it's just like distant and far away.
Donnell Rawlings
Well, first off, it's not sometimes. It's always.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's all the time for me too, now.
Donnell Rawlings
But no, it's like, it's a weird thing I have for you and that's a horrible sentence to start with.
Bobby Lee
Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
It's like, when I see you, I'm happy to see you. Probably for three seconds.
Bobby Lee
Wow.
Donnell Rawlings
And then after that, I'm like, man, fuck, Bobby.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'll be honest with you. When I see you, kind of, man.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah.
Bobby Lee
When I see you, it's like something that I never thought I would ever see, which is like, you know, like, you never think you're gonna see the Chupacabra or slender. Or Slender Man. Mythical, that. Like a mythical thing, right?
Donnell Rawlings
So what I wish. Nothing but the horrible things of your life, let me tell you.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
I just can't.
Bobby Lee
Well, I'm being honest.
Donnell Rawlings
Let me tell you.
Bobby Lee
I'm being honest. You were honest. Yeah, yeah. Sucker.
Donnell Rawlings
Damn it. Yeah, that's Mugachogy. I don't use that word. Anyway.
Bobby Lee
Anyway. Yeah. Going behind.
Donnell Rawlings
Walking the glass to your place. No, this is just for looks, all right? When I was walking up here and I walked through your driveway, right? I was like, I can't wait 30 years from now when you're so old that you can't make it up your driveway until you have to move.
Bobby Lee
Oh, that's fucking awful. That's an awful thing to say to somebody.
Donnell Rawlings
It is.
Bobby Lee
You know what I can't wait for you to do?
Donnell Rawlings
No, I don't.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah. When you go completely blind.
Kat
A. Come on, Bobby.
Bobby Lee
What do you mean? Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
Donnell Rawlings
Oh, I can't wait.
Bobby Lee
Did I have to.
Donnell Rawlings
Didn't have. Did I want. Have to look at your face?
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
I'm want to embody Stevie Wonder right now. I don't know.
Bobby Lee
Okay. You know, but you know what? I'm going to embody Bruce Lee. I'm like water. Yeah, Yeah. I change. I flow.
Donnell Rawlings
Right.
Bobby Lee
You know what I mean? I manually
Kat
manipulate.
Bobby Lee
No, not manipulate.
Donnell Rawlings
Masturbate.
Bobby Lee
Yes, I masturbate. A lot of water comes out. A lot of water comes out. Yeah, Yeah. I masturbate. Yeah, yeah. And let me tell you something, all right? For you to defend this Cretacoma.
Kat
Creature.
Bobby Lee
I didn't say creature. Creation.
Donnell Rawlings
Creation. Creation.
Bobby Lee
That's what I was going to say. Creation.
Donnell Rawlings
This is a work of God. It's a work of God.
Bobby Lee
It's a work of God. Dude, you are a classic.
Donnell Rawlings
Classic.
Bobby Lee
Yeah. You're a classic. Whatever you are.
Donnell Rawlings
Damn. I can't tell you how bad I didn't want to do this podcast.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, I. You know what? No.
Donnell Rawlings
And it was like. I was like, so nobody. No Rogan. No Rogan. I know. No. No nothing. No Kill Tony. I'm like, oh, shit. I'm here for Tiger Belly.
Bobby Lee
All right? When I saw your name on the list, I tried to get out.
Donnell Rawlings
You didn't request me. So you got a booker that just throws these names up.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
You never said we want Donnell.
Bobby Lee
No, it's like the NFL draft. You know what I mean?
Donnell Rawlings
Thank you.
Bobby Lee
I don't know much. What?
Donnell Rawlings
NFL draft?
Bobby Lee
Yeah. I'm like 48.
Donnell Rawlings
A lot of black athletes. NFL draft. All right, all right. I'm drafted. You're supposed to hug me.
Bobby Lee
Not yet.
Donnell Rawlings
Not yet.
Kat
Okay.
Bobby Lee
Not yet.
Donnell Rawlings
I need to say hi to my mother. First.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. No, I saw you on the list and I was like.
Donnell Rawlings
I was excited to be here. I like you.
Bobby Lee
I love you so much.
Donnell Rawlings
I don't want to do it.
Bobby Lee
I love you so much. I do love you so much. There is a thing that we have, and I think that. And we've talked about this before. I think that you think I'm gay. It's a thing that we have. Yeah, I think it's a thing that we have that you secretly dark. What are you nodding about?
Donnell Rawlings
No, I.
Bobby Lee
Deep down inside, you think that I'm a gay person and that.
Donnell Rawlings
No, I think that you have the most. Out of everybody in this room. And I don't know if anybody's in here gay. You have the most potential to suck a dick, Bobby.
Bobby Lee
And that's not a bad thing. Potential. What? That's not a what? That's not a bad thing. I'm on the wrong podcast.
Donnell Rawlings
Joe Buttons, can you save me right now?
Bobby Lee
That's a survival incident in certain cultures. Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
You know, Lord of the Flies. I don't know what you're talking about.
Bobby Lee
We're a kid Lord of the Flies. We're on an island. You know what I mean?
Donnell Rawlings
No.
Bobby Lee
You know what I mean? Hey, can I get your coconut?
Donnell Rawlings
No.
Bobby Lee
And they're like, no, that's my coconut. And I go, whatever, right?
Donnell Rawlings
And that half the coconut, there's nothing.
Bobby Lee
What do you think that's survival instinct? It's Darwin. Yeah, it's Darwin.
Kat
Epstein's Island.
Bobby Lee
What, you cut that part out? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
It's a Diddy party.
Bobby Lee
Keep that in. That's cultural. Yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
You never.
Bobby Lee
You never went to that, right?
Donnell Rawlings
I never went to a diddy party. And I get that question asked a lot because I took a picture with Diddy some years ago on a yacht in St. Martin. That's the perfect situation to get diddied, right? Yacht, St. Martin.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
And I didn't. People like, did you ever. Have you ever went to a freak off? And I'm like, no. They was like, why not? Because I never got the invite. Now, I probably would have went with certain rules. You know what I'm saying?
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
Nobody behind me. I get Cassie, I get hurt. I get hurt. But the whole bad boy part, I wouldn't.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah. Were you dressed white?
Donnell Rawlings
What was that for that party?
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
No, I was dressed in. I was dressed. Yeah, maybe I did. I was lit on that boat. God damn. I was setting myself up to get dittied.
Kat
Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah, of course, but it was. It was a good time. It was a family function. Which has gone viral.
Bobby Lee
Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
It's not what you think, but that's it.
Kat
So no one behind you? So just post it up against a wall or.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah, that way I can have clear sight on what's going on.
Bobby Lee
You know, I don't like the way this white person here is talking to you.
Donnell Rawlings
Why?
Bobby Lee
Like an investigator? All white people like that.
Donnell Rawlings
That's the first time.
Bobby Lee
I know. Do you ever notice that when you talk to us?
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah.
Kat
What? Talk to us.
Bobby Lee
You're like an investig.
Donnell Rawlings
What is the us, guys.
Bobby Lee
I'm a part of it. I'm a part of it. You know, I'm a rooftop Korean.
Donnell Rawlings
You a what?
Bobby Lee
A rooftop Korean.
Donnell Rawlings
What does that mean? Like, you really don't have.
Bobby Lee
In 92, during the riots, I was on the rooftops with the shotgun. I know, but. But we're in the same era.
Donnell Rawlings
No, we. Not in. By that time.
Bobby Lee
In the movie. If there was a movie about it.
Donnell Rawlings
No, I would get a part. No, you would get. You.
Bobby Lee
Look, remember the riots? 92. Do you remember the riots? I'm a rooftop Korean.
Kat
Were they guarding a liquor store?
Bobby Lee
Yes.
Donnell Rawlings
Is that actually in Korea?
Bobby Lee
Oh, no, that was in Koreatown.
Donnell Rawlings
I was stationed in Korea. Yeah.
Bobby Lee
There. Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
All y' all look alike. Is that really.
Bobby Lee
Is that.
Donnell Rawlings
That really you?
Bobby Lee
No, that's not. Are you. Are you. Oh, you're fucking.
Donnell Rawlings
I'm just saying, it looks like.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
Got the same eye.
Bobby Lee
I just do. Also wanted to say that what was funny to me is when I went to Springfield or Yellow Springs, whatever.
Donnell Rawlings
Yellow Springs, Ohio. Yeah.
Bobby Lee
Wherever you live.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah.
Bobby Lee
And I was there, and you said, come over.
Donnell Rawlings
I did not say come over. You a fucking liar. Come over.
Bobby Lee
I didn't say come. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You said, come over, Right?
Donnell Rawlings
That's not what I said.
Bobby Lee
You said, this is exact quote. Okay, come over. I be cooking some fish or something. I'd be cooking some fish. Yeah. And I'm good at it. I'd be about cooking that fish. Yes. I was going like this for you, boss. That's what I heard. The catfish. Right? That's what I heard. Right.
Donnell Rawlings
No, that's that.
Bobby Lee
I told you. That's not what I will stop. Could you stop for a sec? I just woke up.
Donnell Rawlings
Okay.
Bobby Lee
All right. I did. I literally woke up. 10 minutes. Yeah, yeah. So I'm just trying to get my mind right. Right. So what you said in Yellow Springs, okay, was, come over. I will be cooking you some fish.
Donnell Rawlings
That's not.
Bobby Lee
And so. And I was like, I can't listen
Donnell Rawlings
to this story without stopping it.
Bobby Lee
That's not what you said. It was late night.
Donnell Rawlings
You had a sad face.
Bobby Lee
It was late night.
Donnell Rawlings
You look like a Korean orphan.
Bobby Lee
Right?
Donnell Rawlings
You were starving.
Bobby Lee
Oh, you called me a Korean orphan?
Donnell Rawlings
I said, you look like one. Yes. I'm calling you a Korean orphan. You said you had to put your. You said no, this is what you said. Darnell, where can I get some good food in this town?
Bobby Lee
Which is a fair question.
Donnell Rawlings
And I said, the only place for good food is at my house. I'll cook some food.
Bobby Lee
No, you didn't say food.
Donnell Rawlings
Why do you keep saying fish? I did say I was gonna fry some fish, but he wanted it raw, so it wasn't gonna happen like that. But the thing is, this is how diabolical, how much of an asshole you are. I was being courteous because in that town, the food scene is horrible after 8 or 9 o'. Clock. There's no food today. In fact, we're talking Yellow Springs, the same place with Dave. It's so many nights where Davis called me. He had guests. D, could you whip some food up? And I wanted to be nice to you, and I wanted to send that offer to you. And guess what? It didn't happen. What did you eat that night?
Kat
Taco Bell?
Donnell Rawlings
Nothing.
Bobby Lee
I ate nothing.
Donnell Rawlings
Right?
Bobby Lee
Yeah, I ate nothing.
Donnell Rawlings
And guess what? You could have been.
Bobby Lee
And guess what? Fried fish.
Donnell Rawlings
Motherfucker.
Bobby Lee
Motherfucker. Guess what, dude. Hey, motherfucker. Guess what, dude.
Donnell Rawlings
What?
Bobby Lee
Right. Right. You would think. You would think that I would trust. I agree.
Donnell Rawlings
You should have said adashi. I go Peka, Paul, Monty mugger, Kimchenayo. See, that's saying, I'm hungry as shit. Could you feed me?
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
All right. There you go.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
Hunger, my low. Choke, em.
Bobby Lee
Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
Ahead.
Kat
Can I ask a question?
Bobby Lee
Not as an investigator, though. We're.
Kat
Can I ask as a white person?
Donnell Rawlings
Yes, I would love to hear you ask a question as a white woman.
Kat
As a white woman, specifically.
Donnell Rawlings
Not a person. A white damsel in distress, you know, I want you to ask me a question like a white woman. Like, I thought about it in high school, but I never did what everybody else was doing. That's the way I want the question. Hello.
Bobby Lee
We're interrogating a white woman cla. Just, you know. Yeah, yeah.
Kat
You're dating a white woman?
Donnell Rawlings
No, no. We're in Target. I don't know what we were doing.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Kat
So I'd like to ask. In high school, no.
Donnell Rawlings
First off, be critical of her being late. If I would have came in late, you'd be like, oh, what you getting fried chicken? Watermelon.
Bobby Lee
You would have made me feel bad about Bobby. Made me feel bad. I wouldn't understand that.
Donnell Rawlings
Bobby, you would have been like this. You left the watermelon in your car.
Bobby Lee
No.
Donnell Rawlings
Yes, you would have. You would have said that.
Bobby Lee
I would have said, did you left your children in the car?
Donnell Rawlings
Right.
Bobby Lee
In your Cadillac car or something like that? No, nothing like my watermelon or chicken. No problem.
Donnell Rawlings
As a white woman.
Kat
Yeah, okay. Yeah. As a white woman.
Bobby Lee
Not too much. He started it.
Kat
I'd like to know. There's a debate, right? Asian don't raisin and black don't crack. Which do you think?
Donnell Rawlings
Asian don't raisin.
Kat
Have you heard this?
Donnell Rawlings
I heard black don't crack. And that's just true that black don't crack. But we die a lot quicker than a lot of other people. And while white people are cracking, they live until like 80 and 90 years old.
Bobby Lee
Yeah. Would you rather be cracking or fucking are like dying?
Donnell Rawlings
You were trying to rhyme something.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, I was trying to rap there, but I couldn't anything from cracking.
Donnell Rawlings
Black people, we don't. I mean, black don't crack, but, you know, we have other things that we deal with like heart disease, high blood pressure. It's stress. Cholesterol.
Bobby Lee
It's stress. And that's what oppression does.
Donnell Rawlings
And trying to create relationships with Asian comedians, there's a lot of things that take the blood.
Bobby Lee
I see.
Donnell Rawlings
That's one of them.
Bobby Lee
How many Asian comedians do you know?
Donnell Rawlings
All of them.
Bobby Lee
You don't know all of them? Uh huh. You don't know?
Donnell Rawlings
I don't know their names, but if you say them. Oh, you know, I know they look
Bobby Lee
like you give me two names.
Donnell Rawlings
Tommy Tran, he's a.
Bobby Lee
Is that real guy?
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah, he's a military. He does a lot.
Bobby Lee
You know Tommy Tran?
Kat
Yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
What's the. Dude. Fuck. God damn. I can't remember their names now.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
But I know them all. Yeah. When I see him, I like, oh, they go, the Chinese nigger right there. That's what I see.
Bobby Lee
I'm cool.
Donnell Rawlings
Korean. All right, whatever. That's it. I do know them, but I think of their name.
Bobby Lee
You're nice to them.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah, they're cool.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah. So I think that. I think. I don't know what the statistics are, but Michael, yo, he's half locked, though. Well, he's a combo. I halfway know you can't do combo. You halfway know him. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's a funny.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah.
Bobby Lee
Would you. Would you. Would you be nice to me if I was half black?
Kat
Yes.
Bobby Lee
Like. Cause when we see each other at the Comedy Store, I could see you either trying to find the exit or try to run away. Find the exit.
Donnell Rawlings
The reason why I would like to be excited when I see you, but you can't just do that. You can't just be like, what up? What up? You got a hug. You gotta be like, oh, come here for the close one. And that's. I'm homophobic, bro. I'm a recovering. Oh, I'm a recovering. Yeah, I'm recovering.
Bobby Lee
Oh, you're recovering.
Donnell Rawlings
I'm going to a program every morning. Be like, hey, my name is.
Bobby Lee
Well, I'm European.
Donnell Rawlings
That's the closest to homo you're gonna get.
Bobby Lee
I know.
Donnell Rawlings
So. Acceptable.
Bobby Lee
I need. Bonjour.
Donnell Rawlings
No, you. No, no, you always. It's just.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, I need you.
Donnell Rawlings
You can't just do, like. Watch this.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
See, you can't just do anything like that. You got.
Bobby Lee
I just did it.
Donnell Rawlings
And then half the time, I used to see you fucking butt, ass naked on a comedy stage. I don't know how to brace your motherfucker after it's set. I don't know how to do that. What's up, man? Put your dick away. What do I say? Yeah, yeah. I wanna hug you, but you gotta put your dick away.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, I've never put my dick out.
Donnell Rawlings
You be. You'll. You'll be.
Bobby Lee
I'll show, like, the. The cavernous of the sides of my pubes. Just pubes, a little top, pubes, a little cavernous. But that's a sexual thing. Lenny Kravitz does it.
Donnell Rawlings
I'll just put it like this.
Bobby Lee
Why can't Lenny Kravitz.
Donnell Rawlings
Well, he's black communities. In some communities, that's offensive. In some communities, they will have an issue with that. I'm just trying to get you to be able to understand how you need to move around in the African American community. And you don't wanna listen. You don't wanna listen. And even while you're listening, it feels like you're not listening. Your face is not paying attention to me. There's so much racism going behind those little ass eyes right now. And then I'm trying to help you with it when I see you, Bobby, I know you need therapy, all right? And I'm here for that, but I gotta kick you off my couch sometime. You don't listen. All the things we talk about. We had an endearing moment when we did Burt Kreischer's the Cabin show. Right? It was a very, very, very serious moment.
Bobby Lee
Whatever.
Donnell Rawlings
And everything that I tried to teach you. Then you just threw it out the window.
Bobby Lee
No, no, no. Can I just say. And I'm gonna just stop you right there, my friend. Okay, what is it? The first time we saw each other on that show, me and Bert both got completely naked and laid on the rug. Now I don't see any criticism.
Donnell Rawlings
Did you know how upset I was?
Bobby Lee
I don't see any criticism. Right. To Bert Kreisler.
Donnell Rawlings
You have a very hard time with communicating. All right, Listen to it. We're talking. You started yelling for no reason.
Bobby Lee
No, because I found that offensive.
Kat
That is on my way up, all I could hear, I told George, I was like, bobby's already yelling.
Bobby Lee
No, no.
Donnell Rawlings
And I'm coming in here with a different energy. I'm coming here with a totally different energy. First of all, first off, I was on time.
Kat
You were early.
Bobby Lee
That is true.
Donnell Rawlings
I was just on time. I was on early because I just was to diffuse any type of stereotypes, right?
Bobby Lee
What do you mean? All right, so what I'm saying to you. Okay.
Donnell Rawlings
Yo, yo, Bruce Leroy.
Bobby Lee
This is you half black. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that. Now, would you. Dude, I'm fat and it's in pot. Your hair is curly and straight.
Kat
I like.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, it's kind of cool.
Donnell Rawlings
It's horrible.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, it's horrible. It's a horrible combo. It's a horrible combo. What would Donnell look like, half Asian? Oh, yeah. Find that. Let's just see who is more horrible. All right, So I want to apologize. Okay.
Donnell Rawlings
For what?
Bobby Lee
Well, I just want to say. Yes, I have been screaming a lot, but what I'm. I was just trying to yell out the hypocrisy of. When? That day at the cabin when Bert and I both got naked at the same time.
Donnell Rawlings
First off, you and there's be there. You were a last minute replacement. They didn't pick you first, Bobby. You do know that, right?
Bobby Lee
I'm never.
Donnell Rawlings
Okay, let me say this. Oh, my God.
Bobby Lee
Dude, you're gonna work on this so
Donnell Rawlings
fucking mad right now. Dude, let's work on this.
Bobby Lee
No, no, no. You're making me so mad that I wanna quit right now. Dude, guess what?
Donnell Rawlings
Mission accomplished.
Bobby Lee
Okay. Garner. Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
Money.
Bobby Lee
Oh, yeah. One more time, Clara. Huh?

Bobby Lee
Yeah, all right.
Donnell Rawlings
It's only a great show where you are great. All right. So I was excited about Bill Burr being on the show, right. And I'm looking at the trailers and everything and I'm like this, oh man, Bill Burr. And then I saw it and it said Bobby Lee. And that's when I was like, this is going to be a fucked up day. And just like I thought soon as I go walk in the house, the first thing you do is you get ass naked on a bear. A bare skin rug.
Bobby Lee
With who?
Donnell Rawlings
With Bert Kreischer.
Bobby Lee
He was already naked.
Donnell Rawlings
So you've proud of yourself that you joined him.
Bobby Lee
No, but when I'm just. Yeah, when I'm saying there's no criticism.
Kat
Was that part of the. Or were you guys.
Donnell Rawlings
No, they improv. This is the shit. They just improv.
Bobby Lee
Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
That's Second City shit.
Bobby Lee
Second shit.
Donnell Rawlings
Groundling.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah. Groundlings. That's ash.
Donnell Rawlings
And then as much.
Bobby Lee
Yes. Anding. Yes. Anding.
Kat
Yes.
Donnell Rawlings
Ashley, as pleased as I was to be working with you, I still fucking got through it and I did it. And then we had a moment at the table where we were talking about. I don't know if it was fatherhood.
Kat
It was fatherhood. Yeah, it was fatherhood. Honestly, I will say, I know you wanted Bill there, but of all the episodes Aside from Ms. Pat, I think it was my favorite episode. The wildest, but also the most profound. Especially when you guys got like real.
Donnell Rawlings
And this is why I don't like him. Because you saw a moment yeah. You saw a moment with two men talking about their childhood like it was a teachable moment. Right. And with that said, you would think that moving forward, that relationship would be tighter, have a more understanding, respect for each other, and it didn't happen. He's still an asshole. Nothing's going to change him.
Kat
Oh, he's You.
Bobby Lee
He's.
Kat
He is lovely. I know exactly what you're.
Bobby Lee
I feel like.
Donnell Rawlings
I feel like family feel. Good answer. Good answer.
Bobby Lee
I'm absorbing. I'm absorbing.
Kat
I think I. I can give good perspective on this from both sides. I think what you're saying is historically true. He has been. It is hard to communicate because he has, like, add.
Bobby Lee
He.
Kat
It doesn't mean that. He doesn't mean what he's saying. It's just that the moment passes and then he moves on to the next thing.
Donnell Rawlings
Because even when he moves on to the next thing, it comes back to the first thing as an asshole. So I understand what you're talking about, and that was a very good observation. But how long are you gonna be an asshole?
Kat
But can I say one more thing? One more thing.
Donnell Rawlings
Listen, look. See the respect she gives me? She raises her hand. Listen, Bobby.
Kat
But I was late, so that's disrespectful.
Donnell Rawlings
Okay. All right.
Kat
But I will say that. Give him another chance. Cause he's now been in me for years. For years. And I do think he's really changed. Is he naked?
Donnell Rawlings
I did his other punk ass podcast. Right. It was on his birthday. There was another moment where I tried to be endearing and I tried to respect him. And he doesn't give a fuck. How long does the world have to give a fuck about Bobby Lee?
Bobby Lee
Okay. Oh, my God.
Kat
What is your relationship outside of the podcast studio? Do you guys text? Are you checking in on each other? Is there a real attempt for a.
Bobby Lee
That's you as a black.
Donnell Rawlings
He. White women.
Bobby Lee
That guy right there.
Donnell Rawlings
Yes, yes.
Bobby Lee
He works at cnn.
Donnell Rawlings
He plays the instrument.
Bobby Lee
He plays guitar. He's a newcaster. Yeah. Anyway, no, we do.
Donnell Rawlings
I try to.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, listen, I try. Oh, my God, you're lying. I love this. You're lying.
Donnell Rawlings
I tried.
Bobby Lee
You're a liar.
Donnell Rawlings
To have moments with him.
Kat
I just want to say the white person is the most passive here at this table.
Donnell Rawlings
Yes.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh. What you're saying.
Donnell Rawlings
Until we go to court, it's a whole different.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, what you're saying. I know what you're saying right now. I think what you're saying is, is that now that we finally have you Know what I mean? Equal footing, right? You think that we're loud. No, now that we have equal footing, minorities, right? Now we're speaking our minds, and you're saying, oh, I'm the quiet one. Yeah. Where were you during the crusade?
Donnell Rawlings
Where were you?
Bobby Lee
Where were you? Anyway, I'm trapped. You're making me so. No, may I talk?
Donnell Rawlings
Good.
Bobby Lee
Okay. So. All right. You know, I'm gonna ask the Comedy Store or any of these comedy environments where I run into the sucker.
Kat
Sucker.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
Okay. All right.
Kat
I'm sorry, an er.
Bobby Lee
What? No. Anyway, okay, all right. And. And videotape our interaction interactions, okay? Because it's always excitement on my part, right? And, like, I'm, you know, the alpha tiger. Okay. And you're like, wildebeest, you run away. You run away.
Donnell Rawlings
Yes, I do.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So what I'm saying is, how does one develop a relationship when the tiger can't have a coffee with the wildebeest?
Kat
Donnell, what do you really need from Bobby and want from him to foster any, like, good feeling?
Donnell Rawlings
I think he hides his real feelings, and it's real emotion.
Bobby Lee
Okay,
Donnell Rawlings
he's twitching.
Bobby Lee
Bobby, I love it.
Kat
You're absolutely 100% right.
Donnell Rawlings
I think that he wants to be a better person.
Bobby Lee
I love it.
Donnell Rawlings
I think that he wants to communicate with people. But then we would see a side of him he doesn't want to express. So that's when he has to always go out on these tantrums and all of these things. Like, I try to have moments to him. He's like, yo, one day he was like, man, I would love to do sketches with you. Right? I was like, let's try to do it right? And then.
Bobby Lee
But I don't want to do
Donnell Rawlings
goes. And it goes into that. When he was gonna do his special, he was like, I'm thinking, I'm gonna do this Netflix special. I was like, oh, that's a good thing, man. But then he says, he talks to himself. He said, I wanna do this Netflix special. He said, but fuck it, I don't wanna do it. What do I need it for? I'm already selling out. I'm like, maybe it's a vanity play, maybe that you want to align yourself with people that have other specials, and maybe it's time for people to see how great of a performer you are. Whenever I try to have these serious conversations with him, he turns into comedy because he's afraid. He's a wounded child inside, right? And I know he deals with some childhood trauma, but at some point, you have to talk to somebody and just listen to what they say. He doesn't want to listen to what they say. Even after we do this, he's going to go upstairs, go to his bed, he's going to cry, he's going to jerk off, and he's going to do another episode. And that's what it is. I'm trying to make him a different person. He doesn't want to do that.
Kat
Donnell, can I ask you, do you love Bobby?
Donnell Rawlings
This is why. This is what I. I won't say love. This is what I will say. I respect him a lot. I respect his career. I know how hard it is for a short Asian motherfucker to make it in his business. They don't give them too many opportunities. After Bruce Lee, it was like we had enough of this shit, right? I respect. I respect the fact that you asked me a question. I respect. This is what I'm saying. In this business, some of us have opportunity. You need to stop laughing right now.
Bobby Lee
Uh oh, sorry.
Donnell Rawlings
This is what I respect about him.
Bobby Lee
Stress me the fuck out, bro. Shut the fuck up, bro.
Donnell Rawlings
This is what I respect. He was a part of a branded show that was super hot, right? MADtv. Sometimes we have opportunities where you'll be hot for a year or two or the show be hot. He had a nice run with that and then when it was over, he still was able. That part of his career, it was over. He still was doing his shit. He still was fucking one of the top comics working in the city. And even with that, when all of this shit about podcasts and everything, he discovered this and found a lane for this before a lot of other people, you know, I mean, I respect the fact, the way he shifts gears, right? I respect the fact that he's still in. I still respect the fact when I first moved here, like when I used to come and I used to see all these names on the billboards, I used to ride down, are you gonna fucking pay attention to me?
Bobby Lee
You know,
Donnell Rawlings
I'm one.
Bobby Lee
Listen. I'm listening. Okay, I know. I'm listening to you. I'm absorbing everything you're. No, no, I'm absorbing everything you're saying. It's just there is a feeling of like, you know what I mean? Feelings.
Donnell Rawlings
I would like to have the feeling of completing my sense.
Bobby Lee
I can't wait until I can talk.
Kat
I know, but here's. Kat and I are interpreters.
Bobby Lee
I understand that. So what you're doing right now is watching me, listening, but also being frustrated. But I'm letting The guest. You know what I mean?
Kat
Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
This motherfucker.
Bobby Lee
You know what I mean? This downright right.
Donnell Rawlings
We're here first going to this country. He went through. He writes all the time. I don't want to do that. It's too easy. When I first moved here, okay, I used to ride down Sunset and Hollywood and everything. And it was always the same names that was on this list. Like, that was performing, you know, and it was always Bobby Lee. Bobby Lee. I'm like, how the fuck this motherfucker get so much stage time? And every night this motherfucker would put in the work. I was. I thought it was dope that he was still. After the mad TV shit. He's still the thing that I really care about. He gave a. About just being a fucking dope. Stand up and always going to work out. That's what it is. I'll try to talk to him. I don't want to do it anymore.
Kat
Okay. What I'm hearing. What I'm hearing is you respect the fuck out of him and you seek a deeper friendship that his.
Donnell Rawlings
At one point.
Kat
At one point that he And. And you thought there was a friendship there that he actually wasn't able to give in earnest.
Donnell Rawlings
Right.
Kat
Because he was naked all the time.
Donnell Rawlings
That's part of it.
Kat
Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah.
Kat
Or that. Because he was covering up his true feelings with.
Donnell Rawlings
I would rather him cover his dick and his ass up. I don't give a. About his feelings. That was me. But that was his thing. But I always, like always, you know, I've always. I always respected him.
Bobby Lee
Yeah. Yeah. Put your hotel back on. Oh, yeah, yeah. Sorry.
Kat
I have glasses.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, I. I know. May I talk now?
Kat
That was nice.
Bobby Lee
That was really nice. May I talk now?
Donnell Rawlings
Yes.
Bobby Lee
Okay. Okay. So number one. Okay. I did do a special, and it's coming out in November because you were right. Do you see what you're doing right now? You didn't. Let me tell you. We're doing Korean numbers. And as you could notice, as you can know. You mean I could do the same, but I'm not gonna. Okay. You know, I could do the same thing, but let me say something to you.
Donnell Rawlings
Is that funny? I'm just curious.
Bobby Lee
No, but go ahead. Yeah. It wasn't.
Donnell Rawlings
You could do the same thing.
Bobby Lee
It wasn't funny.
Donnell Rawlings
The same thing.
Bobby Lee
It wasn't funny. And sometimes I, I, you know, I swing and I miss.
Donnell Rawlings
Right.
Bobby Lee
And that's the whole point of comedy.
Donnell Rawlings
I know, but I look, I looked at you.
Bobby Lee
I know. Can I talk? Because you keep talking.
Donnell Rawlings
Okay. Good.
Bobby Lee
And that's your thing.
Donnell Rawlings
All right.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah. You know what I mean? You keep going. All right, so let me. Let me say what I need to say.
Donnell Rawlings
Say it.
Bobby Lee
Okay. And let's talk about the truth.
Donnell Rawlings
Continue.
Bobby Lee
All right, so what you.
Donnell Rawlings
When you talking,
Bobby Lee
When you have something to say, when you talk to me about the comedy special, I. It really sunk in because he was
Donnell Rawlings
a bitch and he was nervous. I saw the bitch in your eyes.
Bobby Lee
Interesting. I see how I'm trolling.
Donnell Rawlings
He was a bitch.
Bobby Lee
Trying to be sincere.
Donnell Rawlings
I'm trying to coach you.
Bobby Lee
Like, you can do it, Bobby.
Donnell Rawlings
The world needs this.
Kat
I think. I think Donnell, you're not letting him, like, even give him a. I'm tired of your.
Bobby Lee
All that therapy.
Donnell Rawlings
I don't want to hear that. I listen to other. Shut the up. I want to hear that. Go make a sandwich somewhere. Isn't a sandwich you can make somewhere? I'm so sorry. I didn't mean that. I took an opportunity for a joke.
Bobby Lee
I'm sorry.
Kat
I love you. No, no.
Bobby Lee
All right. Thank you. Okay.
Donnell Rawlings
What?
Bobby Lee
May I speak my mind?
Donnell Rawlings
But the bitch was in your eye. I couldn't really tell.
Kat
The white woman has raised her hand.
Donnell Rawlings
Sorry.
Kat
Bobby.
Bobby Lee
Yes.
Kat
Do you love Donnell?
Bobby Lee
Deeply. Number one. And this is the truth and honest truth. Okay. Is I. Out of all the comics in the world, there's probably three people that I would hate to follow at the Comedy Store.
Kat
Yeah.
Bobby Lee
All right. He's one of them. Not that I would bomb, but I think that it wouldn't be. It would be me working at 100 level and trying to keep the audience attention. That's how funny this guy is.
Donnell Rawlings
Can I say something? This is what I never understood about.
Bobby Lee
I'm not done.
Donnell Rawlings
Go.
Bobby Lee
Okay. All right. I'm not done. All right, all right. I speak at my own pace.
Donnell Rawlings
Speak your piece. Okay, I've been bothering my EJ right now.
Bobby Lee
So what I'm going to say.
Donnell Rawlings
Wait a minute. Slow down.
Bobby Lee
All right, so number one, I remember DJ Johnson.
Donnell Rawlings
Okay, go ahead.
Bobby Lee
I remember when you talked about the special. I just did one for Hulu. It's coming out in November. Right. And I took your words of advice.
Donnell Rawlings
Which were.
Bobby Lee
Which is like, you should do a motherfucking special.
Donnell Rawlings
Right? I didn't say motherfucking special. I didn't say motherfucking special.
Bobby Lee
I did not say whatever you said.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah, okay.
Kat
I think you said you were a bitch.
Donnell Rawlings
No, I did. I said I saw the bitch in your eyes.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah. The bitch in your eyes. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
I saw the bitch in your eyes.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, but that's not a verbal thing. You're saying it with your own eyes.
Donnell Rawlings
And there's the reason why I said you should do one. I don't say that about everybody.
Bobby Lee
I'm not done yet. Okay, sorry, let me finish. Right. So I did. See.
Donnell Rawlings
How am I becoming a complicated.
Bobby Lee
So I did it. Number two, I think that Donnell Rawlings is almost unfollowable.
Kat
Yeah, I would.
Bobby Lee
I mean, have you seen her? Because she works at the Comedy Store. She's a door person. Okay. And they watch you.
Kat
Your gun bit the.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah. You're unfollowable.
Kat
It's a good one.
Bobby Lee
Number three, I think that you're a generous person and you're a kind person and you're highly respected in the business. Now, that being said. Okay. That being said, I. I've observed you communicate with other people in the comedy world. Right. But when it comes to me, and I got what you're saying, that there's things that freak you out about me. Okay.
Donnell Rawlings
One of the reasons why I like to talk to you. Because nobody else wants to.
Bobby Lee
Okay? Okay. So. But I'm gonna address the Bill Burr thing real quick.
Donnell Rawlings
What is the Bill Burr thing?
Bobby Lee
Oh, of the cabin.
Donnell Rawlings
Oh. Well, you were the third person they wanted, but they really wanted Bill and they couldn't get them.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That is a true thing.
Kat
Okay.
Bobby Lee
Okay. Because I remember getting the call that night. Right. Because we were together back then.
Kat
Yeah. And you were like, oh, I gotta go drive to Big Bear. Suddenly.
Bobby Lee
Suddenly. To do. Because I. They couldn't get anybody, so I was like, third choice.
Donnell Rawlings
All right. Fourth at the. Maybe Fourth.
Bobby Lee
Maybe fourth.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah.
Bobby Lee
And I'll be honest with you. Yeah. That hurt my feelings.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Bobby Lee
Because who wants to be picked forth.
Kat
I was picked.
Donnell Rawlings
A lot of people want to be picked for. Because then when you get in the game, what do you do? And after. When I look at it, I'm not done talking. All right.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So that is true. And I get picked a lot. Third or fourth sometimes.
Kat
That's the best play.
Bobby Lee
I know. That's not that. It's not a play at all.
Kat
Okay.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You're just in line.
Donnell Rawlings
But the best thing about it is that.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah. You're. You were in the schoolyard.
Kat
Yeah, yeah.
Bobby Lee
I want Jimmy Jones on my team, and you're the last guy.
Donnell Rawlings
And that's what happens.
Bobby Lee
And then some guy goes, all right. You know what I mean? That's what it Is all right. Yeah. So I'm not done. So I show we're gonna have some
Donnell Rawlings
restrictions on how long you can talk.
Bobby Lee
You talked so long.
Donnell Rawlings
Okay, go ahead.
Bobby Lee
All right, all right. So it's so long.
Donnell Rawlings
All right.
Bobby Lee
I need to defend myself. So I show up, right? And I know that I'm fourth picked because Billy couldn't make it. Right. And I saw your name on it. I'm. Oh, my God, this is gonna be great. Cause it's donell Rawlings. What a high level person. Right? And as soon as he saw me, you could tell that there's disappointment in his eyes.
Donnell Rawlings
It was.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, I know it was. I know.
Donnell Rawlings
Cause I was like.
Bobby Lee
There was disappointment in your eyes.
Donnell Rawlings
Cause what? I like the reason why. Because not that I was prepared for Bill burr, but me and Bill burr have some history from years ago that I thought that this platform would be a good place to like, you know, kind of talk about it. So I wasn't prepared for a motherfucker that likes to be necking on a bare skin rug.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
But at the same time, I already know, like, when you come into a scene or whatever, it's gonna be electric. As much as it was gonna be a different show, I knew you was gonna come in and pop the show. And just to add to what you're saying about being picked forth, I know that for your ego, it might not feel good, but at the end of the day, did you get in the game? You know, and if you get in the game, then it doesn't. Nobody knows what round you were drafted or anything. All they know is, like, the performance. And I know as much as you're an asshole, when I understand why they picked you for mad tv. When a motherfucker says go in action, you're going to go.
Bobby Lee
I go.
Donnell Rawlings
And then when they say cut, you're going to be an asshole again. No, you're going to do it.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. All right, so let's. I think we're going to come to a census here.
Kat
This feels nice communicating.
Bobby Lee
It feels nice communicating with you.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah.
Bobby Lee
Okay. But let me tell you something. We've had these conversations before. Just because we've had these conversations before.
Kat
Escalated again.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, we've had these conversations because he's
Donnell Rawlings
using hands to talk to me.
Bobby Lee
You don't have to do this. I've had these conversations before.
Kat
Bobby stuck with this. Stop, stop.
Bobby Lee
I know, but we've had these conversations. No, we've had these conversations before. Black lives matter. We've had these Conversations before
Donnell Rawlings
you ain't
Bobby Lee
seen it doesn't change anything. Right. When I see him, the next time, he's going to run away. Dude. Right? 1970s Olympic medal. What's going on?
Donnell Rawlings
You're doing science. I'm doing science.
Bobby Lee
This is not a. Koreans do this. North Koreans go.
Kat
North Koreans do. Do that.
Bobby Lee
Yeah. Kim Jong Un. Kim Jong Un.
Donnell Rawlings
Kim Jong Un is like an asshole.
Bobby Lee
Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah. Do you know he, like. I don't know if you know. Like, this motherfucker, he just made this law, right? That it's.
Bobby Lee
Didn't you go see him?
Donnell Rawlings
No, I didn't go see him.
Bobby Lee
Oh, that was. Oh, yeah, that was.
Donnell Rawlings
He made a law. It's against the law in North Korea. It's against the law to commit suicide.
Bobby Lee
What?
Donnell Rawlings
And if you try to kill yourself and you don't kill yourself, he's gonna fucking kill you.
Kat
But how about.
Donnell Rawlings
That's crazy.
Kat
But how about if you do kill yourself, then what happens?
Donnell Rawlings
You just broke to your law, You're a lawbreaker, and you're dead.
Bobby Lee
Oh, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah. That's it.
Bobby Lee
Yeah. You're dead.
Kat
So if you do, you got to be efficient.
Bobby Lee
Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
If you. You don't have chance, you don't have time to reconsider your thoughts.
Kat
Yeah.
Bobby Lee
North Korean facts. Give him a round of applause. Thanks for the update.
Donnell Rawlings
Jump off a bridge and you'd be like, no, I want to think about it. Then pop. Yeah.
Bobby Lee
Why? I heard in factory. Did I say this already? In factories in North Korea, they make meth in these factories, and then they compensate the workers with meth. So they're on math. Making math and sending it to the Philippines.
Kat
Yeah. For the Philippines. Yeah, exactly. Thank you for shining my country.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Kat
But that's exactly where it comes from.
Donnell Rawlings
You're Filipino. Tallest Philippines. You mix.
Kat
Yeah, mix. My sister is six feet tall.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah. That's weird. Nobody. I know. This is so wrong, but by your height, nobody would even think about that. You're a Filipino.
Kat
But, you know, I think my.
Donnell Rawlings
Did I say that right? I wasn't trying to.
Kat
Yeah, there are a lot of shorter Filipinos, but, like, lately, they've been getting taller and taller. Similar to, like, Koreans. Right. My. My family, they're all really tall. All the men are, like, over six feet.
Donnell Rawlings
Okay.
Kat
Even, like, pure Filipino. If you didn't know that she was Filipina, what would you think she is?
Donnell Rawlings
I don't know. I would say.
Kat
Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
I don't know. I might would say some type of Latino mix.
Kat
That's usually what.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah. Let's go back to the Bert Chrysler show.
Kat
Thanks for the break.
Donnell Rawlings
Good break.
Kat
You were just peaceful.
Donnell Rawlings
You're the only one for three seconds, Bobby.
Bobby Lee
What?
Donnell Rawlings
You're the only one who can have a moment.
Bobby Lee
That's not what I was doing.
Donnell Rawlings
Okay.
Bobby Lee
Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
All right.
Bobby Lee
What I was doing, I was steering the ship.
Donnell Rawlings
Continue.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah. Because on this ship, Titanic style. Oh, you think we're gonna hit Heisberg?
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah.
Bobby Lee
Okay. What I want to. What?
Kat
I just hit his. His.
Bobby Lee
It's fine.
Kat
Sorry.
Bobby Lee
It's fine. Yeah. So what I want.
Donnell Rawlings
You thought I was gonna just get mad and go crazy. She was like, oh, so sorry. Please. I never meant to do your mic like that.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah. So let's just go back to the Brooke R. Show. I thought that being what it was, I think that everything happens for a reason.
Kat
Yeah.
Bobby Lee
I do really believe that you meet people at the right places at the right times. You know what I mean? And I think that I was supposed to be on that show because I thought that that episode was pure magic.
Donnell Rawlings
It was very good.
Bobby Lee
Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
It was very dynamic. But I will say this. The thing about that, as much as it was chaos and everything, when we were sitting at the table, I guess we were. Burt was making food or whatever, I thought that that was a. That's what I really appreciated about the show most, more than anything. We had the moments of being funny, whatever. But at the same time, as comedians, we are human. We have emotions. But people, it's hardly. It's not too often that you get to see that, and that was a good time for that.
Bobby Lee
Okay. So I just.
Kat
Wow. That's a night.
Bobby Lee
So I want to say this to you. All right? I hope this episode, you know, causes peace. You know what I mean? And
Kat
causes peace is the word I've never heard.
Bobby Lee
Cause peace creates.
Kat
Causes peace. Creates.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah. Creates peace. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Sorry, sorry. I'm nervous. All right, so. Because when I get. When I get, you know, intimate and sentimental, I get nervous. All right. So can I lock eyes with you? I mean, that's where it begins. No, the soul. Seeing each other's soul.
Donnell Rawlings
I don't want that relationship.
Kat
See, but he already told you he's a recovering homophobic.
Bobby Lee
I'm not gay. I'm not gay.
Kat
That's a soul. Eyes.
Bobby Lee
Yeah.
Kat
Like gay adjacent, kind of.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, I'm gay. Like, ish. Ish. Gayish, if I may say.
Donnell Rawlings
Blackish, grownish and gayish. I do something Yellow spring. It's called Donnell Land. That's on Memorial Day weekend. Right. It's four days of family activities that we do. Like, I have one night, it's a family night where we party with like entire family parties. Saturday we do a celebrity kickball game. We have a comedy show.
Kat
Kickball.
Donnell Rawlings
Can I come Sunday? Yeah, you can come Sunday. We do Sunday. That's just a night of old school. Like three legged race. We have like a flag football game. It's dope. And then Monday we do a river run where we take people on like a five mile kayak. Canoeing.
Kat
That sounds so fun.
Donnell Rawlings
And we ended with like a barbecue. And a barbecue. And we ended with a podcast.
Bobby Lee
Can I stay at it?
Donnell Rawlings
That's my son.
Bobby Lee
Can I stay at your house or.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah.
Bobby Lee
What I want to say to you is that I think you're a lovely man. What? Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I think that you're very talented. You know what I mean? And we may not ever get to the point where we're like super close. Right?
Donnell Rawlings
But the fact that we talk about
Bobby Lee
it, but we talk about it, but I do you know what I mean? Respect you.
Donnell Rawlings
You said, would I do a sketch with. Would you have any excitement about doing any other sketch?
Bobby Lee
Yeah, I would love to do a sketch with you.
Kat
I think a lot of it is like, you don't have maybe follow through. Who is what you are.
Bobby Lee
What?
Kat
I'm hearing your glasses because he wants to do sketches with you. Yeah, but like, this will call me. It's not a motherfucker.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. This backs dogs.
Donnell Rawlings
This back dog.
Bobby Lee
Call me at midnight, right? Tomorrow morning. Where you be at at 6 in the morning, right? And I'm like, I have shown to you already.
Donnell Rawlings
I would be like, rise and shine. Where you be at? Wake up, dog.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
He's.
Bobby Lee
It's always the most inconvenient time when he texts me to do a sketch.
Donnell Rawlings
But I would think that, like, when I think about that, I think like schedule.
Bobby Lee
Two weeks before putting in the schedule.
Donnell Rawlings
I thought an idea would be funny idea for like we. For some kind of way.
Bobby Lee
We played brothers, a great movie.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah, we played brothers. I'm your half black Asian brother.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
There's a lot of connection. I really want to.
Bobby Lee
I. I've always wanted to do a movie called Oh, I always wanted to do a movie called I've always wanted to do a movie called war baby. Why you think of war babies? You and are the.
Donnell Rawlings
Why you.
Bobby Lee
No, okay.
Donnell Rawlings
You keep talking and then you scream on me, bro.
Bobby Lee
I didn't scream.
Donnell Rawlings
You screamed on me. That Makes you feel better. You just. Like. I was sharing a moment and you just cut it off again.
Bobby Lee
It's because I had a.
Donnell Rawlings
And I was telling. I was talking about some creative shit that would.
Bobby Lee
I was just. I was gonna say something creative. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Finish yours and I'll pitch an idea.
Kat
What about I pitch an idea? Donna, Let me try. Let me try.
Donnell Rawlings
This summer, don't squeeze in. Spread out.
Bobby Lee
Find homes big enough for your whole
Kat
guest list on vrbo.
Donnell Rawlings
That's Vacation Rentals done.
Kat
Right. Book your stay now. I heard war babies. I heard brothers. How about. You guys are brothers. But he's a favorite son. Your mom is Asian, though, and the whole story is you trying to earn her love. Right. But the mother backdrop.
Bobby Lee
The mother.
Kat
Korea.
Donnell Rawlings
Or his mother could have a kid that they didn't grow up together. Then as they got older, they knew it was another sibling out there in some kind of way. We got reconnected. Or I'm an anchor, baby. I'm an anchor.
Bobby Lee
Okay. Or can I say an. Or.
Kat
Yeah.
Bobby Lee
May I say an aura? Or. My Korean mother thought she couldn't have babies, so they adopted a black baby. A son. Or a year late. I'm not done with my pitch.
Donnell Rawlings
I'm sorry.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And a year later, she just mysteriously gets pregnant with me.
Kat
And then.
Bobby Lee
Right.
Kat
It's. And then. And then. I'm not doing Or. Okay, then. But you become the golden boy. And are preferred. You become over the bee. And you become some, like, Deadbeat. Just. Loser.
Bobby Lee
Yes. Loser.
Kat
And you don't have a relationship.
Bobby Lee
Yeah.
Kat
Yeah.
Bobby Lee
You went to college. You went to prison, Winston. You became a lawyer.
Kat
Lawyer.
Bobby Lee
Like someone like James Baldwin.
Kat
Oh.
Bobby Lee
One of my favorite black historical figures, by the way.
Donnell Rawlings
I wonder why.
Bobby Lee
Because he's Kate. Oh. I didn't.
Donnell Rawlings
That's a crazy one to have.
Bobby Lee
No shit.
Donnell Rawlings
You love James Baldwin.
Bobby Lee
No, no, no, no. I like James Baldwin with what he says. Yeah. You know what I mean?
Donnell Rawlings
I know.
Bobby Lee
Yeah. Yeah. He went to Paris. You know what I mean? He's an intellectual. You know what I mean? I like it.
Donnell Rawlings
Or like a Korean woman had a baby.
Bobby Lee
Yes.
Donnell Rawlings
By a military guy.
Bobby Lee
Yeah. Cool.
Donnell Rawlings
And. The baby was raised an orphan.
Bobby Lee
Okay. Redo it.
Donnell Rawlings
Okay.
Kat
Let me tell you.
Bobby Lee
I don't know what it is.
Donnell Rawlings
No, this is what I. Yeah, yeah.
Bobby Lee
I'm an exact level.
Donnell Rawlings
This is part of a true story.
Bobby Lee
Can we do this? Can we do this?
Donnell Rawlings
Shut the up.
Kat
That sounds like a mom.
Donnell Rawlings
No. No reason. Why? Because when I was stationed, I was in the Air Force. I was stationed in Korea. It was an unfortunate situ.
Kat
Bobby, that's not.
Donnell Rawlings
Do it straight up like this, too. Yeah, your arm's not long enough, but that was an issue.
Bobby Lee
Thank you for your service.
Donnell Rawlings
Thank you.
Bobby Lee
Okay.
Donnell Rawlings
For acknowledging that.
Bobby Lee
Okay.
Donnell Rawlings
There was. That was a situation where some of the military guys, they would get women pregnant over there and then. Because when I was stationed in Korea, it was called a remote tour. That means you're only there for a year. So it was guys out there, they'd get a woman pregnant or whatever. Eight months later, they're out of there. And then they had these kids that weren't accepted by the community because they was orphaned, and I don't know. Because they was mixed black or white or whatever. In fact, there was an orphanage that had those type of kids. And the first taste I had with, like, making somebody laugh or being funny was I would dress up as a clown and go entertain those orphan kids that didn't have parents. There's something about that story. It might be a little too serious, but it's something about that story that's so sweet.
Kat
But you would dress up as a clown.
Donnell Rawlings
I was trusting your face. This whole episode. I was dressing up as a. As an entertainer. No, but I would. I would dress up a clown, and I would, like, just. Just have fun. Do little balloons and shit. Like that was just something I did. I used to teach. I know this. Nobody's gonna ever believe this, but I was so fascinated with Korean culture when I was over there, right. Like, I really wanted to learn the language, be a part of the culture. I used to teach. Well, assist with. They had a course at Seoul University, American culture. Right. And I'm not a professor. I don't have no formal education, but they just wanted somebody just to go up there, just to talk. And then, because I knew a little Korean, not Florida or any of that, but I used to go up there and I'll tell you, there's so much of a difference between education, the educational system, and Korea opposed to America. Because when I was there, I was a bullshit professor. I would just go up there and just share stories. They'd be like, oh, you're my professor. They respected me. Like, I've been in school for, like, 10 years to do this, and it's like everywhere I went, it was the extra bowel and certain things that I experienced being stationed in Korea, I want to revisit and kind of connect with that. That's why my next special that I want to do, I want to shoot it in Korea.
Bobby Lee
Oh, you should wow.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah. And it's interesting.
Bobby Lee
Do you like the Korean people?
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah. And the culture? Everything is a good, interesting story.
Bobby Lee
Interesting. It's very interesting.
Kat
But he was still.
Donnell Rawlings
I see why.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm full. It's very interesting though, if you think about it. If you think about it, I'm full Korean and yet.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah, but you're adopted, right?
Bobby Lee
Wait, no, no.
Kat
Wait a second. Oh, wait. I have an opportunity for me to go back to Korea.
Donnell Rawlings
That would be interesting.
Kat
You know how they have a lot
Bobby Lee
of these war babies. Here we go.
Donnell Rawlings
Oh, wow.
Bobby Lee
Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
Oh, that's crazy.
Bobby Lee
That's crazy.
Donnell Rawlings
No, here's the thing with me wanting to go back to Korea. When I was stationed in Korea, I used to work with this guy. His name was Kim Chae Sung, right? Kim Chae Sung was a good friend of mine. We used to crack jokes on each other. All the time. We crack jokes. I would teach him some English, he would teach me some Korean, right? And I always, every so often I think about him, I'm like, what is he doing? What is he up to? Kim Chae Sung. And Kim Chae Sung used to get mad at me because I used to fuck with him. Like in a Korean culture, if you sing somebody's name like Kim Chae Sung, it's like insulting. Like you call him a bitch ass motherfucker. And I used to always fuck with Kim Chae Sung. He used to be like lolis. Why you say Kim Jae Sung? I don't like Kim Jae Sung. You call me Kim Jae Sung, right? And I was always. Sometimes I think about what he's done or where his life is. It's like 30 some years ago. And I started working with these Korean tailors about four years ago. And I was telling them the story about Kim Jae Sung and my relationship. I was like, I wonder if he ever thinks about me. And one of the tailors said, maybe.
Bobby Lee
One of the Taylors, he has no
Donnell Rawlings
idea, Said, maybe we go find Kim Chae Song, right? And I'm looking at her like, there is no way 30 some years later you're gonna find Kim Chae Song.
Bobby Lee
Why? He's in the military.
Donnell Rawlings
He was in the military. He could be dead.
Bobby Lee
I know, but there's records. You think that in Korea we have no records? You know what I mean? Part of my story, look at the records. And Kim Chung is Chaseon.
Kat
Is that a common name? Yeah, like super common, right?
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah.
Kat
So that's a little bit harder to find.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah, yeah.
Bobby Lee
But if I would start at Homo Hill. Have you Heard of Homo Hill?
Donnell Rawlings
No, I haven't.
Bobby Lee
Yeah. Homo Hill is the gay community in Korea.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah, I wouldn't know where it is. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you were there. Did you drop a pin? Did you show your location?
Bobby Lee
No, I just. I'm just very aware that there's a Homo Hill.
Donnell Rawlings
Let me finish this story. Okay, so part of that, like, I know for you it might be an easy process to go find him. For me, I'm thinking 30 some years ago, Kim Chae saw. And basically I'm saying they all look alike, so.
Bobby Lee
Okay, I know what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna help you with this. No, yeah, yeah, yeah. I wanna.
Donnell Rawlings
Let me tell you the end of the story.
Bobby Lee
He died.
Donnell Rawlings
He's gonna fight you.
Kat
Yeah, that's good. That's good. You learned that.
Donnell Rawlings
So she was like, maybe we find Kim Chae Song, right?
Kat
It's to alleviate the stress and anxiety.
Donnell Rawlings
There you go. Yeah. So she was like, well, maybe we found Kim Chae's son. I didn't think anything of it, right? Literally, like, three months after she said that, she sends me a picture. She found him. Aw. And I was like, what the. The crazy thing. I was like, what the fuck did y' all even talk about? And she said, donnell, every story you told us about Kim Chae Song, he told us the same story in Korea. So part of.
Kat
Wait, how old were you guys?
Donnell Rawlings
I was super young. I was probably 18. I went in. Really?
Kat
Oh, like teenagers.
Bobby Lee
Don't touch me. It's beautiful. Hey, beautiful.
Donnell Rawlings
What?
Bobby Lee
It was so beautiful.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah, this is.
Bobby Lee
It's beautiful, dude.
Donnell Rawlings
It's beautiful. But the point I'm making, even when it comes to specials, to my opinion of specials, they aren't special anymore. Like, everything unless, like, there's just nothing special, you know, you'll meet somebody at the gas station, like, yo, come. I'm taping my first special. But there's certain things that can make it special. My thought of doing this would be, like, documentary style, you know what I'm saying? When I come over there, I kind of, like, share some of the stories of me being in Korea, maybe interview some of the people I was stationed with. But what I would like for to do at the end of it, and, like, I could get in touch with Kim Chae Sung now, but I want to end it with us reuniting, reunite. I do, like 10 minutes about that relationship. It's a lot of funny stuff that I didn't mention. I'll save it. But that would be so dope. And I think It'd be different.
Kat
I think you could do a whole special just around your experience.
Bobby Lee
He comes to the show, right? He's at the show, right? Yeah, Right. And then after the show, you guys can go to Homo Hill, you have a little tea, you know, who knows what'll happen? A lot of things happen there. But, you know, so true, so true.
Donnell Rawlings
That's young Daniel.
Bobby Lee
Oh my God. So cute, so cute.
Donnell Rawlings
Yo, I was 17.
Kat
Oh my God.
Bobby Lee
You were a baby. Baby.
Donnell Rawlings
And when I, when I first was stationed in Korea, they used to call me egi.
Kat
What does that mean?
Bobby Lee
Baby.
Donnell Rawlings
Because I had no facial hair, they thought I was a dependent son. They thought that I was called osi. OSI is like the equivalent to the FBI in the military. And when you osi, you can't wear your rank on your shoulder because if you ever get captured or anything like that, they don't want to know who you are. So they used to call me Osi and they used to call me Eggye. That was 17 year old kid. That was basically.
Bobby Lee
Can I say something about your. That photo?
Donnell Rawlings
Yes.
Bobby Lee
You are so handsome, so cute. And the years have not been good to you.
Kat
Well, that he was.
Bobby Lee
No, no, no. The weathered. You've been through a couple of tsunamis and hurricanes. I don't know what happened to your face. He's been looking for the sun, but you got fucked up.
Donnell Rawlings
You know. Let me tell you something about that picture. What it represents to me, Am I right? No, no.
Bobby Lee
I mean that should have been like, you know what I mean? A model.
Donnell Rawlings
I'll just say this, Bobby.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Go back to the other picture.
Donnell Rawlings
Go back to the other picture. What that picture represents to me and to be able to hear and talk to you is so many people from that year of that age that I know that are dead now. So you can say how weathered I look or whatever. I'm still.
Kat
He served in the military. I mean, you're so right. I think that that's. When I look at this, it breaks my heart a little actually. A little.
Bobby Lee
Why? Why does it break your heart?
Kat
Because he's in uniform. He's a young kid. There's so many things that are happening in the world at this time. And he's a young kid. Station cross.
Bobby Lee
What's going on in this world?
Kat
I'm this world. This, the world that this little boy is like living in. He's all the way on the other side of the world in a different.
Donnell Rawlings
First time on an airplane, first time drinking is so interesting.
Kat
He's likely Lost friends.
Bobby Lee
Stop.
Kat
Yeah.
Bobby Lee
Let me say something.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah, the remark.
Bobby Lee
Let me say something.
Donnell Rawlings
You're right. I did.
Bobby Lee
You're right. You're right. The remarkable part is this, okay? 17 years old, being shipped to a different country, right? Learning about different cultures, right? At one point, he's no longer in the military, starts doing comedy, becomes on the Dave Chappelle show, becomes a fucking star playing thousands and thousands of theaters. And now he. You know what I mean? He's killing it. This is a man who's lived a full life of experiencing every little drip of what life has to offer. And it's a miracle, okay? He had the talent then, right? You're talking about a guy who is like, lived a complete life, who walked through fear, right, and did what he said he was gonna do. And see, that's. I'm. I'm being real right now.
Donnell Rawlings
We know where this is gonna end by.
Bobby Lee
No, it's gonna end you going, shut the fuck up. You know what I mean? You know what I mean? You gay in. Or whatever you're gonna say, go back to Omaha or whatever, whatever you're gonna say.
Donnell Rawlings
What's your point?
Bobby Lee
But I'm saying that when I look at this photo, I see a boy who's about to have an extremely, you know what I mean, excellent life. There's hardships in comedy, there's hardships in the business that we do, but you made it and you did this as well. You've had so many different lives, you know what I mean? So it's just like this is a photo of someone that's extraordinary, even though you look like an old timey black man now. You know what I mean? You know what I mean? Yeah. You know what I mean? Or whatever.
Donnell Rawlings
A tap dancing.
Kat
What's that?
Bobby Lee
I don't know.
Donnell Rawlings
No, you could have danced without maracas.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You know what I mean? But like. You know what I mean? Just weathered, you know what I mean? But my point is, is that. But that's. To be honest, you know, I mean, bulgy eyes. You know what I mean? You know what I mean? But like, kind of Beetlejuice, like.
Kat
Okay, we don't.
Bobby Lee
But my point is, is that. From the Stern show. But what I'm saying is, is that what a life. You know what I mean? And your face reveals a story.
Donnell Rawlings
And that life would have been better if, I mean, I'm telling you, I can honestly say I really appreciate what you said, but. No, it really meant a lot to me. And I know this episode, it's not all about jokes, but that life would have been so much better if I would have never met you. This airman has died in the story. You know how bad to put life in a bed when I just never saw.
Bobby Lee
And I could say the same. I could probably say the same. Yeah, I understand.
Donnell Rawlings
I would love to be able to dismiss the part of me meeting you.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
But there was something going to be. Something's going to happen come something. Somebody's going to look at this one day, be like, you know what? They finally did this movie. They finally did that. And if we ever do something like that, fantastic.
Bobby Lee
But don't you think, though, that you and I in something would be good?
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah, I do.
Bobby Lee
Really? Because we have organic hatred for each other.
Donnell Rawlings
One thing.
Bobby Lee
Yeah. And I think that would play on screen.
Donnell Rawlings
No, it would be real.
Bobby Lee
We wouldn't have to act.
Donnell Rawlings
No, no.
Bobby Lee
The fighting scenes, they would be like, cut.
Donnell Rawlings
Be like, no, fuck him. No, really, fuck him. For real.
Bobby Lee
Fuck this guy. Yeah.
Kat
Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
That's how it was when I was on HBO's the Corner Years ago. I played a heroin addict, right?
Bobby Lee
Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
And we actually shot this on location in Baltimore. So we weren't. It wasn't in no studio or anything. Like, we were really in, like. Like crime infested, like, neighborhoods. In fact, we didn't know who was the real heroin addicts until they said cut. Because they would be like. They'd be like. It'd be like this. Yeah, man. And they'd be like, cut. And they'd be like, oh, no, I'm real, motherfucker. That was years ago. I think that it's so interesting that you said that about that guy in the military. And I have had a full life because a lot of times when we in this business, people think us that we're in this business because when we were younger, we stared in the mirror and we were like this. I want to be a comedian. I'm going to be the funniest guy. I never wanted any of that. Neither what I wanted to do. The first thing I wanted to do, I wanted to be an architect, but I wasn't really good at math. So you can't be a motherfucker architect and not good at math. So I said, maybe I'll be a carpenter. I wasn't really handy. And I chose the military. Not because, I'll be honest, not because I was super patriotic, but I chose it because it was a transition from where I'm from. People of my background. I'll say a lot of black People, when you not decide on what you want to do, you're like, this is the best thing for me. In fact, the way they recruit for black people opposed to white people is totally different.
Bobby Lee
In what, the military?
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah, in the military.
Bobby Lee
Okay. I didn't know.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah. When they recruit you for a white person, they'd be like this, do you love your country? They were asking these questions, do you love your country? Will you stand for your country? Do you believe in this and everything? That's how you.
Kat
The patriotic ground, the patriotic side for black people.
Donnell Rawlings
You know, they say, you know, you ever thought about going to college? I'm being honest. That's how. Yeah, you want the GI Bill, you play basketball, you know, like, because they know that they're not gonna get black. Some are super patriotic, but for most people, especially from like poverty areas or whatever like that you're going in the military just because it's a transition and you look at it like it's a secure job.
Bobby Lee
It's an opportunity.
Donnell Rawlings
It's an opportunity.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah.
Kat
Live basic life.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah. And with me, I didn't join. I joined the military because I was like, fuck it, no college, not really trained or anything. And this is what I wanted to do. And I don't have any gripes about it. It served its purpose for me. But I will say this. If we would have went to war and any of you motherfuckers in this room would have thought that I was gonna protect you.
Bobby Lee
I know.
Donnell Rawlings
Saved you.
Bobby Lee
I know.
Donnell Rawlings
You might as well kill yourself or Kim Jong Un.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
I wasn't that guy.
Kat
Like, when was the last time you were there? In Korea.
Donnell Rawlings
I haven't been since. That's why I'm so excited to go back. Just to see how everything's changed.
Bobby Lee
Just because I have to come with you.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah, I mean, I think that'd be
Kat
a good extra pitch.
Bobby Lee
Okay, go ahead.
Kat
I think that, you know, you guys, you were talking about health earlier. I know you're, you know, worried about your health. They have those head to toe comprehensive health exams. One of them is called, the best one is called Jaime Edispa. And they will literally take every single test, every screening, every imaging, every diagnostic thing, and you for like what, like a thousand?
Bobby Lee
It's affordable there.
Kat
Yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
In Korea.
Kat
In Korea.
Donnell Rawlings
So we're going to go to Korea to figure out when we're going to die?
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah.
Kat
But also, just so you know, are
Bobby Lee
we scanned together or separate?
Kat
No, I think you scan on the same. Holding hands on a table.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah. I Want to be scanned together naked. Yeah, yeah.
Kat
No, but I think that you should go back, like.
Bobby Lee
And they're gonna go. They're gonna scan me and they go, you have bird flu, right? And then they're gonna scan him. He has sickle cell.
Donnell Rawlings
They go. To scare you, like. Yep. He is an. That's a gay.
Bobby Lee
Well, you know that I'm not an. Right?
Donnell Rawlings
No, I don't know that.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, no, no, no, no. But just be real. I'm really nice.
Donnell Rawlings
No, you're not an asshole.
Bobby Lee
Yeah. Okay. Thank you.
Donnell Rawlings
You're just unfavored in some communities.
Bobby Lee
Oh, is it. Are you saying the black community?
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah, we don't.
Bobby Lee
With you. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know what? That is kind of true.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah. No, people like you. No, it's unfortunate. I don't like it.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, I know, I know, I know. I'll tell you a story. Okay. I don't know what event this was. It wasn't in this city, though. It was somewhere else where you were wearing a suit.
Donnell Rawlings
I'm always wearing a suit.
Bobby Lee
Okay, so you were. He was wearing a suit. I think we were in New York, right? And it was for something. And I saw Donnell there, and we didn't know we were both there, and we're crossing paths. And you went the opposite direction once you saw me, more than likely. Yeah, yeah, yeah, More likely, right? And I just wanted to say, you know what I mean? What's up, dude? Right? And there was fear in his eyes. You know what I mean? And he walked directly in the opposite direction. Right? And I didn't see him for the rest of the night. You know, how does one mission accomplish
Donnell Rawlings
Mr. Congress?
Bobby Lee
All right? How does one. How does one develop a relationship when the behavior is like that?
Kat
Maybe start with a bow. A respectful bow up front.
Bobby Lee
Okay.
Donnell Rawlings
So that he should be doing anyway because I'm older than him.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Kat
Are you.
Bobby Lee
How old are you?
Kat
Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
58.
Bobby Lee
I'm 54. You're right. So I should be bowing.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah.
Bobby Lee
And.
Kat
Wow.
Bobby Lee
Yeah. And Samjun. What do I call you? Opa?
Kat
Kyung Oppa.
Donnell Rawlings
You could call me Opa.
Bobby Lee
I'll call you opaque. All right, so from now on, and. And everyone.
Donnell Rawlings
I went from Tongsang, hyungnim. I got a whole bunch of years in that, man.
Bobby Lee
Oppa means older brother. Okay.
Kat
Why not Hyung Young?
Bobby Lee
Or I'll call him hyung. Yeah, okay.
Donnell Rawlings
That guy.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, I'll call you Young. All right, so from now on. And this is going to be true, what I'm saying right now. Is pure fact and truthful. Okay. Please don't run away when you see me.
Donnell Rawlings
I can't promise you.
Bobby Lee
Okay, okay. But if you do see me, I'm gonna bow you and I'm gonna call you young. I'm not gonna approach you. There'll be distance. Okay.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah.
Bobby Lee
And then we can go on our merry way.
Donnell Rawlings
I think that's a very good.
Bobby Lee
And that's a good. That beginning.
Donnell Rawlings
I think it's a good start.
Bobby Lee
I think that's a good start. Right. But you have to force yourself to not run away. I got a point.
Kat
I think the air is coming back this way. Yeah. Okay,
Bobby Lee
So let's regroup. From where do we start? From before that.
Kat
So when you see each other at the Comedy Store.
Bobby Lee
Yeah. No. So we know the rule. We know the rules. I bow. You know what I mean?
Kat
Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
Respect.
Kat
Yeah, Respect.
Bobby Lee
You don't run.
Kat
Are you FaceTiming?
Bobby Lee
You don't run away. You don't run away. And we'll start that there. Okay. Thank you so much for encouraging me to do a special. I have done one and I think it turned out pretty good. Everyone was there. It comes out in November on Hulu. And then the reason.
Donnell Rawlings
Here's another reason why I want to say that. And I don't know if you have this issue, but me, I have this issue. Like I do these podcasts. I was somewhere a couple weeks ago and people just so many people said, you're one of my favorite comedic actors. Right? They say you're one of my favorite comedic actors. I'm like, I'm not really a comedic actor. But what people know me from on tv, I did a Netflix special, but I don't have a lot of presence as a stand up in the world. I don't like people look at me like, that's the guy from the Wire. That's the guy from bmf. That's the guy from Chappelle's Show. But they don't know that's the guy from the stage. And I think that I don't know if you know that issue, but people that have been following standup at the store, they know you're a stand up but I don't know if the world has seen you.
Bobby Lee
They haven't.
Donnell Rawlings
That's like. That's a. As crazy as it may sound right now I'm re Somewhat reinventing myself. I'm gonna start posting stuff. It's not gonna be crowd where clips to it. To each his own that shit. But I'm gonna test myself to drop Bombs just shit that people like. Oh, that should be for a special, so people can connect with me. And when I say that I think you should do a special is because a lot of people don't know you from the nights that you put in at the Comedy Store.
Bobby Lee
I know.
Donnell Rawlings
That's why I'm saying that's why, you
Bobby Lee
know, that's why I did it. And also, you're one of the most. You. And you're gonna hate to hear this, but you and I are very, like, online in terms of podcasting. The stuff that you get clipped for. Yeah, right. Is the same kind of stuff that I get clipped for. It's the same exact. We have the same kind of thing. You know what I mean? So I think that you and I are closer than you think in terms of stylings, in terms of the. I think this is a good chemistry.
Donnell Rawlings
Right.
Bobby Lee
I honestly believe that. You know what I mean? In a different world. You know what I mean?
Donnell Rawlings
I didn't ask for this.
Bobby Lee
I honestly believe that in a different world, if you and I had a podcast, that it would be very good, you know what I mean? Because it would be combative like that.
Donnell Rawlings
But you know what? Here's the thing. But I hate the, like, podcast. It's just. I want to take creativity to the next level. Before I did the Chappelle Show, I used to have this sketch group called the Secret Society years ago. And what it was was basically it was me. Cause I had this stand up, and I had different characters in my standup. Like, I had this one fat kid that took my bike. When I was a kid, I had this Asian character and I used to do this. I had a sketch show, and then I moved away from that. You know, I don't want to say I want to do a show. Can it compete with Chappelle's show? Anything that did like that. But I would love to get back into it. But not in, like, I try to take over the world or I'm the best, but just the.
Kat
For the joy of it with the
Donnell Rawlings
people that I know. Like this guy.
Bobby Lee
Dude, like you got.
Donnell Rawlings
Shut the fuck up. Just stop it.
Bobby Lee
I have an idea.
Donnell Rawlings
Ow. Stop it. No, no, no, no, no. Ow.
Bobby Lee
Ow. Dude, I. I wanna hurt you. I wanna hurt you too. That fucking hurt.
Donnell Rawlings
Not just. Then mission accomplished. Not just. Cause you see these people, like, do these skits and everything. I'm not knocking it, but I would love to get a group of people. Handful of people. You bleeding?
Bobby Lee
No, but hurt. No, no, no, no.
Donnell Rawlings
Oh, oh, okay. All right.
Bobby Lee
Lights out.
Donnell Rawlings
A group of people that a group of people. And not like this could be the best thing but just for some fun shit. Just, just to see how the chemistry lines up.
Bobby Lee
Yeah.
Kat
Would you put Bobby in there?
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah.
Bobby Lee
You know what would be a good idea is ex sketch guys, you know what I mean, that are still in the game.
Kat
Oh, that's a great idea.
Bobby Lee
Yeah. You know what I mean? Like me like guys that were on sketch shows in the previous. Right. And we're like we're an older sketch group. Right. And we're back, you know because all they do is use 20 year olds that are clipped from the ground legs and they're cute. Right. But you got go ahead and the old school sketch guys from different sketch shows in Generations to create their own sketch show. And we're like, just older but like, you know, it's something because you know I'm friends with Jordan. He has a production company. Maybe you and I can go to Jordan, right? And go to Monkeypaw and go. Me and Donnell and a bunch of ex sketch guys that are still Internet relevant today and we, we, we have a sketch group.
Kat
It would be epic.
Donnell Rawlings
That's fun.
Bobby Lee
I think it'd be epic.
Kat
Wait, okay, so yeah, yeah, you were. You're pitching something to, to him.
Bobby Lee
Yeah.
Kat
You're taking this to heart. Like this is something like Bobby will actually do. You need to follow through.
Bobby Lee
I will do it.
Kat
Okay.
Bobby Lee
We got. But, but the only way to do it is to find three or four.
Kat
Okay. Let's think about three, four other.
Bobby Lee
I don't know. I, I mean I don't know if they would be. I mean, I mean Jamie Foxx, Eric Griffin. No, no, no. They're too big. It's got to be me and Dr.
Donnell Rawlings
I wouldn't put it past. I got a great relationship with Jamie and Jamie always. I wouldn't put here at the end of the day a good idea is a good idea. I wouldn't say no to Jamie Foxx. I don't think that's unreasonable. But you know, you never know.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, you never know.
Kat
But even throw like Deborah in there.
Bobby Lee
Deborah Wilson is a very good one. We got, we got. There's a bunch. There's a. But so many people from.
Donnell Rawlings
I know some of these.
Bobby Lee
Yeah. What is Matt TV way down on the list. Just, it's there. Where. Just pass them up. Yeah, it's. Yeah. Okay. Maybe we should have did. Yeah, maybe you should have done this. But let's see where Matt did.
Donnell Rawlings
I'm sorry, I didn't know.
Bobby Lee
Yeah. Yeah, yeah. 22, 20.
Donnell Rawlings
Wow.
Bobby Lee
23, 24, 25, 26, 27. I think it was 31. 31.
Kat
We got there.
Bobby Lee
Okay. We got there. Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
That's not ranking. That's just a listing, right?
Bobby Lee
Listing. No, it's. It's a ranking of the best one ones. No, it's a list. No, read the top.
Kat
Oh, Michael McDonald.
Donnell Rawlings
Oh, Chappelle's at four.
Bobby Lee
Oh, McDonald's would do it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Kat
Monty.
Bobby Lee
40 greatest sketch comedy shows of all time.
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah, yeah.
Bobby Lee
Monty Python would be number one. But anyway, yeah, I mean, that's a good idea.
Kat
That's such a good idea.
Bobby Lee
And I think that it would. We would need a white chick. Yeah. I mean, we would need a. A white dude. Yeah, we do.
Donnell Rawlings
All right.
Bobby Lee
And then I think we could fill it in with two other black people. A black girl and a black girl.
Donnell Rawlings
That's something to think about.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, something to think about. But anyway, you have anything to promote?
Donnell Rawlings
Oh, yeah. Just down Airlins.com. i'm touring. I got a shitload of dates at the end of the month. Oh, this is what I really like to promote. I do something. Yellow Spring, it's called Donnell Land. That's on Memorial Day weekend, right? It's four days of family activities.
Kat
Wait, where is your song?
Donnell Rawlings
Right there. The black. It's like. You'll see.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, I love your song.
Kat
Love that one right there.
Bobby Lee
I love your song.
Donnell Rawlings
Right there. Hold on. Wait, Keep going back. That's him.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah. He's so cute.
Donnell Rawlings
And then here's the thing. I started this, and the reason why I did this isn't Yellow Springs. Yellow Springs is Dave Chappelle's Home. But when I first started going out there during the pandemic, Dave had the comedy scene on lockdown. But then we had all these people that were in town that we did different type of activities. So I was like, let's do the kickball thing. I was like. I was somewhat the camp counselor. So when he stopped doing it, he wasn't doing as much. I still wanted to continue the energy that we had with introducing people to the country life or whatever. So this is the sixth year. Donnie Lane. It's amazing.
Kat
Also. Also, if I'm not a celebrity, but I was team captain for years.
Donnell Rawlings
If you make. When I tell you it's super, super competitive.
Kat
That was me. I'm a yeller. I was a team captain.
Donnell Rawlings
And this is the thing. When I started Donnell Land, they said, what is Donnell Land? I say, Donnell Land bridges the gap between the young and the Old. To make memories for a lifetime. That's the one thing I steal in my son. Like, like always make memories. It's a good time. Six years. I will say I was a little nervous about doing this year because anytime you do big events, it's just so stressful dealing with all this stuff. But I want to shout out my sister, Arlinda Franklin, who pretty much became the executive project manager or whatever title she has. She's making sure that this vision I have continues. And she's doing a great job and I love it.
Bobby Lee
What's 522? 5:22.
Kat
That's awesome.
Bobby Lee
I'm in Toronto. I'm doing two sold out shoes in Toronto.
Kat
Wait, what do you guys do on the kayak?
Donnell Rawlings
We just float the river. We just float the river. Yeah. It's like a zero. It's a zero class river. It's not like rapid.
Kat
Is there fish in the river?
Donnell Rawlings
Yeah. Little fish. Where we go?
Kat
Yeah, yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
But it's just like.
Bobby Lee
Anyway, check out Donell Land and beautiful, fun activity.
Donnell Rawlings
It's a really good time.
Bobby Lee
Kayak pizza. Yeah. And getting together with old mates. Kickball and kickball. Getting together, you know, I mean, and I think that's a beautiful thing. And especially during a war, I think it's a great thing. You know what I mean? And. And yeah, and also I want to say go check out his dates at his website. Donnell, Railings, whatever.
Donnell Rawlings
Rawlings.
Bobby Lee
Yeah.
Donnell Rawlings
Or Korean. We're pronouncing.
Bobby Lee
Whatever it is. Whatever it is, go check it out. And then. What a talent. And thank you. How many times has donell done this show?
Kat
Wait, can you guys hug?
Bobby Lee
This is our third.
Kat
Can you hug?
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, we're gonna hug a bow. Yeah, we'll. No, we'll do a hug and I'm going to show you the. The different kind of hug I do.
Donnell Rawlings
I don't want, I don't want.
Bobby Lee
We'll do a pair of hugs. We'll do a bow. Okay, we'll do a bow.
Donnell Rawlings
You just bow.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I'll be like, hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Anyway, not a lot of people have done third time on this podcast. You know what I mean? So I think that Gilbert. I think he's done it twice. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Who else has done it? Who's the most that's done it? Theo. Theo. Yeah, yeah. But anyway, you're one of the regulars on this show.
Donnell Rawlings
Thank you for having me.
Bobby Lee
Yeah, yeah. And you know, I. Look at my eyes. I love, I love. Okay. Yamado.
Kat
Shokuri. Ay makabaloli bombola shokomoki.
Episode: Donnell Rawlings: “I Don’t Love You… I Respect You”
Date: May 20, 2026
Host: Bobby Lee
Guests: Donnell Rawlings, Kat (co-host)
This episode of TigerBelly features comedian Donnell Rawlings and centers on his unique, complicated relationship with host Bobby Lee. Through raw honesty and heavy doses of comedy, the conversation explores friendship dynamics between comics, the importance of respect over affection, their personal histories as comedians, racial dynamics in the industry, and creative ambitions for the future. Expect hilarious banter, mutual (sometimes contentious) admiration, and heartfelt moments beneath the chaos.
"I don't love you... I respect you" – Donnell’s words summarize this episode’s spirit. It's an hour-plus of affectionate, combative friendship between two comics who know how hard their paths have been, and respect each other for getting through it with humor intact. From sketch show dreams to military memories, the episode is a love letter (if a sarcastic, caustic one) to the brotherhood found among comedians.
If you enjoy comedy that's honest, self-deprecating, and not afraid to tackle real issues under layers of jokes, this episode is an essential listen.
