How. So is it through the movie that you got, or was it years ago?

I remember you knew them years ago.

Yeah. So years ago, Billie Joe Armstrong starred in a movie that my husband wrote and directed. Lee. Kirk. Lee. Kirk also wrote and directed this movie. And through that process, they became friends. And then a few years ago, he called Lee and he said, I have this idea. I want to do a Green Day movie, but I don't want it to be a biopic. I kind of have this idea of, like, a young punk band traveling across the country to get to a Green Day concert on New Year's Eve. What do you think? And my husband Was like, oh, yeah, I love it. I think that's a great idea. And so he interviewed everybody in the band, and we just went to concerts and we hung out with them all the time. And he got all their stories. He wanted all their stories pre duped. So everything about traveling around in a band before they were like Green Day.

Yeah.

And he weaved all of that, all those little Easter eggs into the story of this movie. But in that process of all these years of knowing Billie Joe and going to all the concert, hanging out with the band, I slowly got all their numbers, I got bills.

The crazy thing was that when he was starring in that movie, that first movie called Ordinary World, he was like, I. He takes. He's really serious. He's like a serious artist. And he came over to our house. I was pregnant with my daughter. And it was the craziest thing.

And I had to leave in an ambulance and I was taken to the hospital. And I was in New York City. And I'm not from New York City, but I had become friends with Fred on this movie. And I had his number and I texted him and I said, I'm on my way to the hospital. And Angela was with me. Angela Kinsey was with me. She rode in the ambulance with me. And Fred came to the hospital and sat with me. I have very hazy memories of this because I think I was full of a lot of morphine. And then you stayed the whole time you were there a while.

No, I. I think there are many stand up comedians who love just doing that. I think Todd Barry is one of those. He's expressed how he's not interested. He loves stand up.

It could have been like a life changer, these kind of feelings and now

No, what I'm saying is that it just doesn't happen at like as frequently as when we came out.

Yeah. And I just. There is a feeling of like, ah, they got, you know, it's different.

There's other stuff though. You know, you go to now you. Instead of that now it's like, oh, you go to the Valley, you record a podcast, get lunch.

on the wall or hearing people's names like, Ben Stiller's going to be there.

Oh, yeah. Like what I've had. I've had table reads where the audience were high hitters and they're like, don't this up. Like, can you do this table read for this movie? You didn't get the part, but it's just to hear it out loud. And then you show up and then there's these hard hitters in the audience.

Yeah.

You don't even have. What.

You're a hard hitter.

I did a table read for Steve Martin.

He had written a musical and they just wanted to hear it out loud. And I can't remember the other people that did it, but it was at. And I can't sing. So it was very clear to me that this was a reading only it would go nowhere.

And it was a musical. It was a musical and there's, like, lyrics on the.

There were.

[Jenna Fischer]

They. They had already, like, recorded the songs, so they would play the songs. But we read the book and. And I remember that my agent was like, there's something you need to know about Steve Martin. He is very punctual. We will be starting on time. So you need to be there 15 minutes early or you're late.

[Bobby Lee]

Oh, no.

[Jenna Fischer]

And all of. Nope. Everybody was on time. He was exactly on time. And we started exactly on time. And I thought it was kind of badass. Wow. I was like, that's kind of rad. And then a few years later, I actually did end up. I was in his play Meteor Shower and he was there. It was the first production of it. It was in San Diego and he was there. He was kind of workshopping it in the sense that, like, the first time a play is Performed. The writer is there and does rewrites along the way, and I never forgot it. And he invited the cast. Oh, yeah, that's me in Meteor shower.

[Luke]

Wow.

[Bobby Lee]

Wow.

[Jenna Fischer]

And he invited the cast out for dinner one night, and I was like, oh, my gosh. I have to be on. I have to be 15 minutes early to this dinner because Steve Martin is punctual. And so I showed up 15 minutes early, and he was already there, and he was at the table. And it was like the greatest 15 minutes of my life. Because nobody else was early. Everybody else was, like, five minutes late. And I got, like, 20 minutes by myself talking to Steve Martin. And I still, like, relish it. It's like, one of my favorite 20 minutes of my life because he's just amazing.

[Bobby Lee]

I love those moments.

[Jenna Fischer]

Yeah.

[Bobby Lee]

Yeah. I have a George Carlin one.

[Fred Armisen]

Where you met George Carlin.

[Bobby Lee]

I was working the back door. I've told the story how many times? A couple times. Yeah.

I haven't heard it.

I know you haven't. I was a kid. I was working the back door, and I was wearing a Comedy Store T shirt. And this man came in, and it was George Carlin. And he goes, what's your name, kid? I go, bobby Lee. I just started calling. I just moved up here from the suburbs of San Diego. I don't give a shit. And then he just kind of walked away. And then a year later, I was still working that back door. He came in and he. He walked by me, and he goes, good evening, Mr. Lee. And he remembered my name.

A year later. And it gave me that old business, like, show business. Y kind of, like tingle down my spine.

[Jenna Fischer]

Yeah.

[Bobby Lee]

Of real class.

And somebody like Larry David has that, I believe. I think he has that. Of that old school class.

[Jenna Fischer]

That's really cool.

Yeah. I think that's lost in many ways. You know, I don't even know his name.

That's true. I had a. I did. I was able to do a table read once with Marin. Actually, Mark Marin had me come in and do a table read. One. I. There was. And this. I don't experience this ever at all. So it was so stressful. He just wanted to hear something he was working on. And I was, like, reading for just, like, the lead person. And I was like, I'm. You're so in your head. Because they always tell you, like, okay, look, it's just to hear it out loud. But you're kind of like, unless I kill it. Because then you exactly like, hello.

[Bobby Lee]

Did you kill it?

[Luke]

No. And I think looking back on it, there was. They. They bought a bunch of food for everyone. And then at the end of it, there was, like, a bunch of food left over. And they're like, oh, take the food. And no one was really taking the food. And I was like, okay, I'll do it. And I scooped, like, a bunch of food on a bunch of plates and left with, like, a bunch of the food. And looking back, I think that might

[Fred Armisen]

have been a bad.

[Jenna Fischer]

No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

Don't waste food.

I also noticed that Marin went up after I had taken a lot of the food, and there was some stuff he was kind of scraping at where there was, like, not a lot less.

Well, you can't take all the food.

I didn't do. And I was like, what are you doing?

Yeah, Yeah.

I gave a grace period of, like, people had, like, you know, 30 seconds. Get your food. They didn't do it. And then I got up there.

To me, it's a test. So if you took a lot of food, I would clock that.

I would have been impressed. I would have been like, good. Be a person who's like. It's almost. It's like a kind of honesty.

Yeah.

All of my aspiring actor days were, like, half of it was auditioning for things, and the other half was. Was finding free food.

[Luke]

Yeah. But also the mind games of how the free food that you can get or what's a test Secretly.

[Bobby Lee]

He's a millionaire and he helped you, and it's not. He's a millionaire and he offered you, like, a two dollar sandwich.

[Jenna Fischer]

Yeah. I mean, did you get paid to do this table read?

[Luke]

No.

[Fred Armisen]

No. There you go.

All the food, you pay. Did you get the part?

No, I haven't heard about it. I honestly feel like he doesn't remember that I was there. There.

I haven't seen it, but I don't know. It was relatively recent. He's probably still working on it.

Did you ever go to a. Did you ever go to a table? Cuz you talk about these things being so cool and good. Did you ever go to one where you were like, this was really bad or like a thing?

Oh, that's a good question.

Yes, you did.

Yeah. But I got the part anyway.

Yeah, I could see myself when you're saying the words that they can maybe hear in my voice that I might be nervous, but I'm not. So I'm opening my mouth, I got that sound like I was nervous, but I'm not. And then all of a sudden my head goes out of control. You never. That's never happened. Okay.

[Fred Armisen]

I was thinking of something else. I was thinking, wait, if something's bad.

[Bobby Lee]

Yeah.

[Fred Armisen]

I always think, oh, they'll fix it. Like, okay, yeah, this is awkward structurally. And then they'll fix this. At some point, I think they must also know this is bad. Wow. You know what I mean?

[Jenna Fischer]

I mean, I feel like the thing that I learned from doing the years and years of table reads on the Office, finally in season nine, I was a producer. And so in the first eight years, every Tuesday at lunch, we would table read the next week's episode. And then the actors had to leave, but the writers and producers stayed behind and did notes. And in my actor brain, I assumed they were talking about our performances. But when I became a producer in season nine and I got to stay, I realized they never talked about our performances. They only talked about the jokes and the structure. And if something felt like it didn't work, wow, they completely blamed themselves. And like, what they were talking about would be as like minutiae as something like, oh, I want somebody to write 12 alts for this one line and this one. Talking head. Wow, that's your assignment. And now you go off and I want you to work on a better tag. New tag. A whole new tag for this.

[Bobby Lee]

Wow.

[Jenna Fischer]

And so it was like it was never picking apart the actors.

[Bobby Lee]

One time, Allison Jones had me because I was. I had already been cast on a show and they were. They were reading for my wife. It was like it written the show and they wanted me to Read with actresses that came in.

[Jenna Fischer]

Yeah.

[Bobby Lee]

And it was an interesting. Seeing it from that point of view.

[Jenna Fischer]

Yeah.

[Bobby Lee]

Was so interesting to me because it's like. Yeah. I mean, people get nervous, but that's not the end. I mean, if somebody fucks up a line, that's not the end.

[Jenna Fischer]

No.

[Bobby Lee]

Sometimes it's just walking it. That's the guy.

[Jenna Fischer]

Yes.

[Bobby Lee]

Or that's a person. You know what I mean?

[Jenna Fischer]

When I first came out to la, I took this commercial workshop with a commercial casting director. And at the end of the workshop, she was like, all right, I'm gonna make the same offer that I make after every workshop, and no one ever takes me up on it, but I'll do it again, which is that I invite you to come to a casting session and sit next to me and watch a casting session for a commercial.

[Bobby Lee]

Wow.

[Fred Armisen]

Oh, man, that's cool.

[Jenna Fischer]

So I was like, I'm 100% doing this.

[Fred Armisen]

And did you?

[Guest Host or Announcer]

Yes.

[Bobby Lee]

Wow.

Yeah. So I'm just arrived in Los Angeles, I've been here, I've taken a workshop, and now I'm sitting next to this casting director. And what was so crazy was that everybody came in the room, they didn't know who I was. So they're regarding me as if I'm a decision maker, but I'm not a decision maker. And so that was interesting.

[Fred Armisen]

Wow. What a good idea.

[Jenna Fischer]

And then what was so interesting to me was how, like, someone would walk in the room and they would look exactly like what they wanted. Like, I knew what they were looking for.

[Bobby Lee]

Yeah.

[Jenna Fischer]

They would walk in, they would look the part, and then they wouldn't be good, and you'd be like, oh, oh. And then someone else would walk in, they would look nothing like what they wanted. And then they would be incredible.

[Bobby Lee]

Yeah.

[Jenna Fischer]

And then someone else would come in and it was like within the first 20 seconds, you knew if that person was getting a call back or not.

Oh, wow.

[Jenna Fischer]

And there were also people who walked in and just crushed it, but just. They weren't right for it. And it was true. It was just true that they weren't right.

[Bobby Lee]

Yeah, you're right.

[Jenna Fischer]

For whatever reason.

Yeah.

But I would. I would also say that, like, 70% of the people were good. They were good enough. And so.

And the other people, it's not that they were terrible. They just. They needed more time. Like, they should take some more classes and stuff, you know?

Yeah.

But I guess it was such an interesting education.

It gave me so much more confidence. When I went to auditions after that

but not a lot of people would have taken that up. Not a lot of people would have been like, I'm gonna walk, you know, man. Right.

That she said. She told me, you're the first person.

[Bobby Lee]

Yeah.

[Jenna Fischer]

That's what she's gonna get on this offer.

And I couldn't believe that.

But I can tell because you're working. Like, I've seen you work. It's almost out of control. Almost. It is so professional. No, it's too professional.

Cause I remember you on Splitting Together, you know, I was like, like, you, the lead of this thing, but you were also reading other things.

I. I did too much.

Preparing yourself.

I did too much on that show. Diane, who played my older sister on that show, she got me aside and she said, you're doing too much.

Wow.

You're doing too many things. I was. I was. I could notice my book was coming out. I was, like, reading another script. I was a mom to two little kids. I was, like, on the board of directors of a charity. And she said, let me tell you something. You only have to do one of these things.

Yeah. Wow.

You're doing too much. And then I, like, cried. I was like, I'm doing too much, Diane.

[Bobby Lee]

Yeah.

I'm doing too many things.

And that's why, when that show got canceled, I took a very big, long break from acting.

[Bobby Lee]

Because I think one time you were, like, reading two or three scripts at one time.

At what point did you realize that you wanted to do comedy more than music, or did that never really happen?

No, I wanted to do both somehow. I wanted to.

I wanted to somehow do a version of getting to do music and comedy, and then I got to do it.

Well, now I've had the luxury of watching a documentary about the auditions. And so I. Now my memory is only what I saw in this video because they showed me my audition.

For how long? Ellen and I would just sneak in and out of her window.

We made up. Yeah. But then in this movie, Jody is. She's the mom of the hang house. And I got very attached to all these boys who are actually young men. And so I have this, like, way that I feel still very motherly toward them, and I keep my eye on them, and I'm rooting for all of them.

That's amazing.

And what was your hair situation? Was that like. Because that looks like a real.

[Jenna Fischer]

Okay, so people have asked me if that's a wig. So, Fred, I did this movie two weeks after I had my port removed after my cancer treatment. So that's my hair.

[Fred Armisen]

Wow.

[Jenna Fischer]

But so in my cancer journey, I had to do surgery and chemotherapy and radiation. Then I had to do a year of immunotherapy, which is. You still get infusions in your port for a year. And Lee had been with me in the house during this whole year. We've talked about this, and this movie is really special to me because as I would sit in one chair in the living room, sort of recovering from all of the various procedures, he was sitting in another chair in the living room working on drafts of this movie. And then just about two months before I was finished, the movie got greenlit, and he had to go to Oklahoma City. So I had to kind of finish out the last couple months of my treatment as, like, a single mom to my kids and all that. In two weeks, before I shot this movie, I got my port removed. I had just finished the treatment, and. And I just kind of brought all of that into this character. Just the. The weight of that year, I can't imagine, and all of that. But it was really special because we brought the kids to Oklahoma City. My daughter's actually in the movie. She plays McKenna Grace's little sister Cassidy in the movie. And then my son plays a drummer in McKenna's band in the movie.

[Bobby Lee]

Oh, that's fun.

[Jenna Fischer]

And they would sit and they watched on the monitors, and I'll get a little emotional, but it was. It was really special for me to take the experience of that year and put it into this character. I mean, not that she's been through cancer treatment, but she is a widow, and there's a heaviness to her life as a single parent and all those things, and. But for my kids to see me get up out of the chair and walk onto the set and do this movie and watch me on the monitors, it was. It was like, mom's gonna be okay.

[Bobby Lee]

Yeah.

[Jenna Fischer]

Right. You know, it's like. And. And we will, and we go on. So it was. It's really special. But, yeah, it was. I was nervous to walk on set. I. I remember meeting with the hair and makeup people and being like, there's not a lot to work with. There's not a lot of hair. And she was so sweet, and she was like, I got you. And she said, let's brush it all forward and it. And I love it. I love how this woman looks. I love who she is. And. And, yeah, so thank you for asking me about that.

[Fred Armisen]

It looks great. It, like, really is the character.

[Jenna Fischer]

It is the character. And I. And there's a part of me that feels like. But for that whole experience, I'm not sure I'm right for this role. Like, pre that experience, I'm not sure I had it. So it was only because of that that I had it to give. And so that. That also, like, makes it meaningful and special, too, you know, Because, I mean, that's all you have as an actor is, like, I don't know, your imagination and your lived experiences. And there's only so much I Mean, unless you're like one of the greats, there's only so much you can imagine, you know, into a character. Like, I just. I pull a lot. Me personally, as an actor, I pull a lot from my lived experience. And so, yeah, I was grateful to be able to do that here.

[Bobby Lee]

Yeah. I mean, for me, the whole experience of seeing you and just being around it all, it's like. I don't know, it was a really special experience doing the movie. Also. I feel the love from you guys too, you know, and that feels good as well.
