Maddie Smith
Welcome to the Midnight Hour. You're listening to 1240 KAB radio, Ocean Bay. This is Maddie Smith, and I'll be filling in tonight for Ron Carlson, who's home with what I'm told is the world's worst sore throat. To be honest, I'm a morning girl. I enjoy getting up early and stopping by the local Pelican for a blueberry latte or whatever their special might be. And I love coming here to the station, bursting with energy, ready to start my show. But this is midnight, and the hours between darkness and light are very, very different. They force us to slow down. They ask us to examine the world and our place in it. For some of you, it can be a lonely time. A time haunted by memories of what could have been and what might never be. You might find yourself overcome with memories of loved ones who vanished from your life. Gone but not forgotten. So I'd like to start by saying a silent prayer for all the souls out there who got lost along the way. The ones who were left behind alone and forsaken. The ones who are just trying to find their way home. I'm Maddie Smith, and this is the Midnight Hour.

My dad loved to hike. He probably hiked every single trail in the Bay Area, and I loved going with him. But for me, it was more about spending time together than anything else. I'm pretty sure he knew that. I remember this one time when the two of us were on a trail just north of Sausalito. I must have been about 12. We took a break and we were just hanging out there and my dad asked if I knew the difference between a labyrinth and a maze. I'd seen the Shining, so I knew what A maze was. But I thought labyrinth was just another way of saying maze. I thought they were the same thing, but they're not. My dad explained that the main difference between a maze and a labyrinth is that a labyrinth has a single path to the center, while a maze has multiple paths that may or may not lead to the center. In other words, it's the difference between following a path that's been laid out for you, not having to make any decisions, or being forced to make choices that will have an effect on where you end up. My dad explained that a hike could be like either one. Most hikes involve a direct path that takes you right where you want to go. But a great hike, the really good ones, force you to choose between left and right, up and down, hard and easy. I've never forgotten that conversation. Even at 12, I knew there was a life lesson in there. Labyrinths are lame. Mazes are fun. Done. I decided mazes were the way to go. But here's the thing. My dad left something out he forgot to mention. The Minotaur.

My parents are the best kind of weird. When I was growing up, we lived in a small house just outside of Portland. And I remember being so curious about the man in uniform that dropped off our mail. So I asked my mom why we never invited him in so we could get to know him. She told me the mailman was not allowed to enter homes, but if I wanted to talk with him, I could do so on the public property that was bright outside. If I did that, the mailman would be required by law to stand there and listen for one whole minute. Then he could leave. Those were the rules. So I would run out there and talk to the mailman all the time. Actually, that's not quite right. I would lecture him about all the moments in history that were very, very important to a girl my age. Like this one time, I used up the entire minute explaining how unfair it was that Anne Frank had to hide in an attic for two whole years because those stupid people didn't like her for all the wrong reasons. I'm pretty sure that one minute rule was nonsense. Mehmet probably thought I was cute. Or maybe my parents just asked him to humor me. The thing is, I never looked into it, and I've never asked my parents, because, honestly, life is better if you believe in Santa Claus.
FBI Agent
My father was a police officer with the Philadelphia Police Department for 30 years. He retired with seven commendations for bravery, heroism, and merit. There's a framed picture of him at City hall last year during the Holidays. He told me that the three most important days in his life were the day he met my mother, the day I was born, and the day he joined the force. The three most important days in my life are the day I met my wife, the day she died, and the day I solved my first case. The subject of that case was a nine year old girl named Lisa who was kidnapped from her school in Chester County. The local police determined she had been taken across state lines to New Jersey. The man who abducted that child was an experienced criminal. His past crimes were ugly and violent, the kind that make you question the nature of humanity. And like most monsters, he was dangerous, but stupid. I found him by analyzing a pool of urine that Lisa left behind in the bathroom of a convenience store. I have been an FBI agent for nine years. That was the only time I was forced to fire my weapon. The monster died and the child was saved. My dad and I shared a drink that night. And I went home feeling justified.
Mapmaker
My first memory was separation. I was alone, floating in an ocean of bliss. It was all I knew and wanted. But then, without warning, I experienced the sensation of being torn apart. Of being pulled in several different directions. When the moment passed, I was no longer alone. I had become 12. And we were 1. The mapmakers had been born. As the waves of time began, we came to understand our purpose and what the future held. This understanding arrived as the first cell of humanity found life. Our futures were bonded in a spark of grace. I remember hearing their first thought. We saw the newly born people of this world as our children. And we knew as parents, we would have to guide them until they could find their own way. But they never did. An eternity has passed and they are still lost. Unable to make the right choices. That is why I am here.
Josh Mayfield
In Greek mythology, the Minotaur was a monster with the head of a bull and the body of a man who was imprisoned in a dark underground maze on the island of Crete. I forget why, but every nine years, the people of Athens were forced to sacrifice seven young men and seven young women to the Minotaur. They did this for ages. Until one day a guy named Theseus decided the whole sacrificing innocent people thing was total nonsense. So he went into the maze alone and killed the Minotaur. Can you imagine how much courage it took to do that? Theseus had to make his way through all those dark, winding paths, never knowing if he was moving in the right direction or what was waiting for him around the next turn. Yeah, I know. It's a myth. It Never happened. And monsters with the head of a bull and the body of a man aren't real. Except here I am in Ocean Bay, about to face the Minotaur.

I fooled around a lot in college. Everyone did. But I only had one real boyfriend. We were together for two and a half semesters. Then we broke up because it was time to graduate and I couldn't see us having a future together. He said that my being obsessed with the past prevented me from seeing the future. What an idiot. And that brings us to the boy from San Francisco. Josh is the first guy I've been involved with since my relationship with Dumbass. Didn't see it coming, but here we are. And I mean, the two of us are so different. I've always had direction in my life. I never get lost. I'm like a human map. And Josh is a mess. A cute mess, but he's still a mess. So the question is, are we together because we're supposed to be together? Or are we together because this insane situation has forced us to be together? In other words, is Josh a part of my future? Or will he become a part of my past?
FBI Agent
Looking out the window of my motel room, I can barely see the Ocean Bay Lighthouse. The structure is covered in fog and mystery. Sheriff Green informed me that it hasn't been in service for years. There's something sad about a dark lighthouse. We crave light, not darkness. That's why I decided it was time to come back, to start working again. A person can only mourn for so long, despite my suspicion that they're not being completely honest. I find myself attracted to the light that emanates from Josh and mc. It's the spark we all feel during the early days of a relationship. I remember it well. A beginning is a very delicate time. That's a line from the book Dune, written by James Herbert. And he's 100% right. When you're trying to create a future with someone, you have to trust, commit and accept in equal measures. That said, I hope it works out for them. I really do. But as I've learned, you just never know what's waiting for you in this maze called life.
Mapmaker
I am alone. The mapmakers don't understand the sacrifice I made by coming here. It was a decision not made lightly. It took great courage and determination. Those are qualities that should be admired. So why are they against me? Why don't they understand? Why aren't they supporting me? We should be doing this together. No matter. This world is about to change, and I take no pleasure in the pain I must cause. But humans crave pain. That is why they are so mindless about how they inflict pain on each other. It is their way of life. A way that cannot go on. The pain I cause will be different. It will be the unfortunate means to a much needed end. And that end will be the genesis of a new beginning. When the mapmakers see what I have done, they will say, it is good.
Josh Mayfield
I feel like I've been lost in a maze since that email showed up with the map of Ocean Bay and the picture of Marie Claire. So much has happened since then. A few weeks ago, I was an unemployed gamer with no future, and now everyone's future is in my hands. But this isn't about sitting saving the world. That's too abstract. It's about saving my mom, Richard, and Marie Claire. I have to save them all. And I have to get payback for Simon and for what Morgan did to Abby in New Zealand. But if this doesn't work, I'm done. I can't restart. It's game over. I would be sacrificing my future to save the present and everyone's future. My present would become someone's past in the future. Whoa.
MC Henderson
Here are the facts. If this crazy plan doesn't work tomorrow, we could all be in serious trouble. I could end up dead. I need to wrap my head around that possibility. I would become a part of history. How's that for ironic? And even if the plan does work, Josh is really putting himself out there. He could save the world but get himself killed. It would be game over for the boy who likes to play games. See, this is why the future freaks me out. The past is so much easier to understand. I wonder if those stupid map makers could just hook me up with a time machine.
FBI Agent
Good or bad, everyone has an opinion of the FBI. If you ask the average American what those three letters stand for, they'll respond. Federal Bureau of Investigation. That would be an accurate answer. But every agent knows what FBI really stands for. Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity. Those are the words I live by. I would have them tattooed on my chest if I didn't find the act of injecting ink under my skin so unappealing. Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity. Those three words got me through the most difficult time of my life. They were the anchors that held me in place, giving me time to heal. And now that I'm back where I belong, they will help me face another ruthless criminal. It saddens me that the supply of these monsters has no limit. So I will continue to be the one who stands between them and us. I will be the one who stops the monsters. Fidelity. Bravery. Integrity.
Mapmaker
What the map makers don't know is that when my work is done, I intend to go back. I intend to go home. I will return and be welcomed as a hero. The map makers will admit their folly. They will ask for my forgiveness. And I will give it. Then together, we will create new maps. Better ones. Maps that leave no doubt about which path must be followed and this world. These people will achieve the greatness that is their destiny. But first, I must kill Joshua Mayfield.

Lost well, it looks like we've reached the end of the midnight hour. Thank you for staying up with me tonight. Knowing you're there listening has kept me warm on this cold autumn night. I'd like to leave you with a few words that capture the spirit of the season quite nicely. What we need to know about the past is that no matter what has happened, it has all worked together to bring us to this very moment. And this is the moment we can choose to make everything new. Good night, Ocean Bay. Sleep well. The light will be here soon.
