There was a guy who downloaded a bunch of sort of like, you know, Web 1.0 websites that had like movie sound effects or like stock sound effects, downloaded every single stock sound effect, fart noise. He could put it into one wav file and uploaded it and asked Claude, I believe it was Claude, but it might have been ChatGPT, to evaluate his music. And they were like, this is basically Brian Eno. This is ambient music. This has got real hit potential. And it's just like, what? So the idea that that can be the result that you get from this and this isn't like a fluke, and then you turn around and you say, this is sentient. This is a human. This is conscious. It's like he's just like you said, Riley. He's too old to be writing articles. He's got his brain cooked by computer. It's happened to a lot of people way younger than him. So quite frankly, I mean, he's actually batting above average. But still, this is just.

Yeah, they're credulity machines, right? This idea of sentience. Because you wouldn't respond to an authentically foreign sentience in the way of being like, oh my God, you're sentient. You just have to then deal with it as it is, you know? What you have instead is a machine that's very good at tricking people.

Just Something that I've dealt with in personal experience is that when you're learning a foreign language, especially this could be culturally dependent. When you first start, people are often quite flattering of you, like, oh, you speak so well. At a certain point they're like, you're past that. And then it's like, why are you. You don't make any fucking sense. Stop talking like an idiot. Because they're treating you like they treat a native speaker. And it's like, in a way, I feel as though people seem so impressed that this thing can do better than, like, a Google search that's been intentionally crippled to deliver bad results that they somehow believe this is sentient. And, like, I'm sorry, but, like, it's my every encounter I've had with it has been. You can see how in a very circumscribed situation, it might have some utility for, like, bulk data processing, but it's not. It's not alive. And the responses it gives are, at best anodyne and at worst, completely and dangerously wrong. Yeah.

It's just that's something that the people making it, like, it's something that they suspected would be commercially viable, that people using it would like. And in the main, they do. And we're. And I was gonna say that, like, well, there's something about, like, Dawkins being very impressed with this machine that I imagine, like, probably speaks to him not that differently to, like, many of the people in his life in the sense of being told that, oh, yeah, you know, you're so smart, you're so clever, you know, you're so interesting, your theories are so right all the time. He's not involved in any sort of contemporary research. Most of his kind of, like, working life for the past kind of few decades has been as, like, a public intellectual that has largely been insulated from the type of criticism and critique that if you were, say, an academic biologist, you would probably be facing just as

It's interesting you say that because I have kind of a theory about this, which is, I think one of the reasons why people of a certain age like AI so much and like it to be sycophantic so much is that they all had their brains. Everyone had their brains broken by Twitter, right? In the same way that we did, or rather in different ways than we did, because there was a period on Twitter where you could not be a public figure without a bunch of people functionally us telling you that you were talking shit. Right? And that really broke some people's brains, right? It really fucked people in the same way that a lot of people got, like, negatively polarized against trans rights because trans people could actually talk to them and say, hey, this thing that you are doing is bullshit. Right? A ton of people were like, no, this is fucked up that, like, the public can interact with me and the public can say, when I'm being a dick. And I would sooner talk to Claudia, my imaginary girl, who tells me that everything is good.
