Travel Gluten Free Podcast Season 09 Episode 07 What to Pack and How to Pack When Traveling Gluten Free Do you know what to pack when you’re flying gluten free traveler? Do you know how to pack your travel items for your next gluten free vacation? If not, then listen in to today’s Travel Gluten-free Podcast, where I give you the how-to, 411 on the what, where, and how to pack when you’re flying gluten free. The Magic of Your Medicine Bag When flying gluten-free, you want to know about this not-well-known piece of information. If you have a disability, and any auto-immune disease is considered a disability, you have the right to carry one extra bag for medical supplies. In addition to the two bags you can carry on, you get one extra. Here’s the link to the TSA article, which explains in detail what you can bring and what they allow on the airplane when you travel with a medical bag. Don’t have a medical bag? Get the PracMedic Travel Medicine Bag. I just picked one up from Amazon, and I’m very excited to travel with this handy medical bag. I’ve been able to stuff lots of supplements and all my prescriptions, along with my spray hand sanitizer, into this convenient bag that has a shoulder strap for easy carrying through the airport. And if you need a clear, quart-sized travel case for your toiletries because the TSA agent took yours the last time you went through security (like the rude agent who I encountered at the St. Louis airport), then grab this amazing deal from CBGE! Three TSA-approved quart-sized toiletry bags for men or women for under $11. Types of Snacks to Carry with You on Your Airplane Trip I never considered this until two years ago, but I now carry a non-peanut, nut-free snack with me on the airplane. Why? Because every once in a while, there’s someone with a severe nut allergy, and they won’t serve nut snacks. In addition, you can’t eat anything with nuts. Since many gluten-free items I eat contain almond flour or nuts, I always bring a second nut-free snack when I fly. Water Bottles and Protein Drink Shakers I’m a big proponent of carrying your own water and shaker bottles when flying, especially if you’re traveling on a red-eye flight. Bring a metal water bottle from Swell (that’s also insulated to keep your water cool) and a shaker bottle with a metal shaker ball as they are more durable and they contain less plastic (I’m doing my best to reduce my plastic use!) Check out the Blender Bottle store on Amazon - they even have bottles in your favorite movie themes, such as Star Wars and Harry Potter! Why Ellen Created Gluten-Free Vacations Ellen loves to “see new locations and go to new destinations,” with the Caribbean, Mexico, and Disney as her top three favorite destinations because these places offer exceptional options for gluten-free travelers. When you feel like you can’t travel because you are gluten-free, the best first step when choosing a vacation is to go to an all-inclusive location with strict protocols in place. There are multiple restaurants you can eat at, extensive gluten-free choices on the menus, making it easier for anyone who’s gluten-free, especially those who are new to the gluten-free lifestyle. Best Destinations for Gluten-Free Travelers “People don’t want to go on vacation and only have the option of eating meat and vegetables.” I agree! That’s why Ellen vets and personally visits the locations that she sends her clients to ensure they can eat comfort foods such as gluten-free waffles and gluten-free pancakes. “You want to indulge and have a good time on vacation. You want to feel like you’re eating what the rest of the group is eating.” That’s for sure! Being able to feel “normal” when you’re eating is such a relief and happy moment when you’re gluten-free.
