But let me tell you how scary this is. Now it's eight miles from our place to where they went. He was so young that he couldn't press the gas. So it made Randy lay down in the floorboard and mash the gas while he drove.

I went to Hardee's and got us some fries.

Cause a little old girl down there was working and gave you the fries.

[Todd]

Mama, you would tell everything you know. That might be why I went to prison. I believe she was a secret employer.

Poor little Winnie come in there and say, gene, I believe there's somebody stealing my gas. Because I had a whole tank of gas. And when I got in to go to work this morning, it's already down. And I just filled it up. And he called them boys in there, said, you better not lie to me. Have you took Winnie's car? Yeah.

And what happened?

Well, he's. I don't know. Remember now? Yeah.

You remember. He wore our ass out. You couldn't sit down.

And it was not stealing, it was borrowing. I brought it back every night.

She used to babysit us at night while mom and him worked. And so I knew how to drive, or I thought I did, and I learned real quick.

I'd have said I was taking Randy. He was. He was having a seizure on the floorboard.

You went and got the car and you went to California.

She don't want to tell. She wants to tell the part that was her. And I. When I found out that news, I got a little nervous. So I decided back in the day you got your credit card statement in the mail and it had the statement number on the top of it. So I called Delta that back in the day, that's when Delta was good. You know, they just. You could just do whatever you need to do. And I gave them the Discover card credit card number and I booked me and I got me a first class ticket because I mean, I don't want to. I'd seen on Dynasty that you did not supposed to fly coach. So I got me a ticket in first class. And it was the first time I'd ever drank hot tea. But I didn't like it. So I poked a hole in the bottom of the cup so I could say it was leaking. I didn't want anymore. So I got my ticket and my friend Tracy and Stephanie, who's always been right there by my side.

[Mama Faye]

And Jean called her too,

[Todd]

and they took me to the airport. And I can still remember what I was wearing. I was wearing these yellow. These really pale yellow pants and a matching shirt with a white T shirt. I look like Don Johnson. I was. I was vibing Miami Vice. And when I got off that plane in California, my cousin Cindy picked me up. And she was married to Lyle Alzader that played for the Raiders. And she picked me up at a Jag. And I'm like, oh, my God, this is what I'm gonna do. Whatever it is, I'm staying the hell in California. I'm getting me a Jag. I don't care if I got to be the biggest whore in the state. I'm gonna do it. And the song that was playing was Michael McDonald and Patti LaBelle on my own. And I felt so liberated. I had left all that drama behind and all them people that had deflowered me over the course of the years. And I was going to live a good life. Until the phone rang.

And it was Gene Grizzly. Where the are you? California. California? How the hell did you get there? On the plane. Oh, you want to be smart. How'd you get the ticket? Because it gone on a cruise. Todd, if I could get my hands on you right now, I'd beat your ass from California back here. Your mom is heartbroken. Well, what came out years later was he was heartbroken too, because when the Todd leaves, the room is empty.

So now we had some peace.

So when I went to school, Savannah about had a mental breakdown.

And we got to the Atlanta airport with a map, a handheld map, and Tracy said, what do you want me to do with your car? I said, you can have it. So that crazy bitch. I would have given it to her. I didn't know no better. You hear the thunder up in this crib? This trailer park is shaking. And they were coming down the road, and Daddy spotted them coming down the interstate. And he made him pull over. And Stephanie, listen. Stephanie, I love you. You know I love you. But you're weak. You should have never cracked. Tracy said, I don't know where he is. He said, how did you get his car if you don't know where he is? Tracy shit herself, too. She said, well, he said I could have his car. He said, I'll slap your eyes through your ass. You ain't getting no car. I paid for her. He don't own it. He said, you read. Get your ass in his car and we're going. I'm taking you home. And he called Tracy Popeye Bug Eyes because she had the biggest eyes. And he said, you, Popeye, Your ass is being dropped off, too. So I ended up staying in California, and I made a very nice friend there. Chapter eight of my book. She was very nice to me. But we're not going to talk about that here in front of Nanny Faye, because that's awful that you ran a house of ill repute. But that's what she's going to tell you, That I stole her. And then I matched the belts to them. And then I'd hide my shit so when they left, I could dress in it and then jump in my car and go to school. And I wasn't smart enough to know that that bill was going to eventually come.

And then you were so harsh to me.

The way I should have killed you.

You better buy you one outfit. And that's all. But that wasn't the way he did it. He would buy him four or five. He had every color, every pair of blue jeans, everything to match it. Mind you, that papa's expense, that's awful.

But now, would you not agree that I bet was good and I tried to repay everything.

Okay, but still, it's the memory.

It's still kind of in your memory.

But what about all them times you used me for free labor when I decorated your house? All them times.

Well, I didn't ask for that decorator.

She. I would back then. You got the JCPenney's catalog. You don't know what that is, but as she was growing up. It's called the Wish Book. And so she got the Pennies catalog. So I would go through and I would look at all these pictures. Because I told you I. I really believed that I was a Carrington on Wednesday nights and a Ewing on Friday nights. And so I would go through. Look these pictures. But I want our house that. So I figured out that you could order everything on that page to make your house look like the magazine. So I ordered everything from the drapes to the. To the bedding to the shower curtain.

The wallpaper. I had never wallpapered in my life, had I? But did I hang there as your mama?

[Savannah]

[Todd]

The only thing that saved me from dying that night and you never making it to this earth was it was. She open that door. She said, what in the world has gone, Gene? What is he done now? I had rearranged that whole bedroom. Had wallpaper on the wall, new curtains hanging up, everything. And Daddy said, I'll kill him. I'm going to kill him. Faith ain't no telling what he's charged on right now. This room right here, we're not going to ever get out of the hole.

It took years.

And Mama said, well, Gene, it looks good. He said, I'll kill you too. That's what he said. I'll kill you too. And my bedroom was right beside theirs. And he was in the bed. He is raised in hell. And she said, well, Gene, I don't know how in the World that young and has learned to do the things that he has done. He's done hung wallpaper. He ain't never been around since.

And so she's laying, I said, julie, put this credit card information here. I said, so I can get him this stuff. And she looked and she puts it in and she goes, she looks at my pulls my, my trans transaction history or whatever it is. She said, where is all of this? What was it called?
