They all have their own personalities. They all do their own thing. And that doesn't mean that you don't love them. But I don't believe you have to compromise your belief system to accommodate your child's belief system that you don't agree with.

No. So you know, I don't think that your love never dies or it's not supposed to die for your child. But I do believe that there's healthy boundaries.

this because that comes back to self respect. Because when you are healthy enough in your own mind and in your own spirit that you know that you deserve better, you stop allowing people to treat you less.

Well, I just tell like these young kids is having children be the best parents. You could always try to make the best decisions. Not that you're gonna always. But the thing about it, don't be a parent. That when they get grown you regret for not being a parent. Me, I don't even have to worry about that because I'm not trying to pin roses on myself. I have. I was a parent. And so I'm not going to ever worry about that.

But when you had to go to the school and you told that teacher, she better not put her damn hands on me again. You remember that?

But I learned to quit being taken up for their Battles. Because you know what? I never liked her anymore. Never liked her to start with. And not only that, you. They get out there and play together the next day and then.

They were still not friends.

Well, now, that's another time. That was the time with, you know, okay, well, you went and got to grandma and they let you in the house. And I had climbed on top of her closet on the shelf up there and covered up with a quilt because, you know, I was just learning how to do my thing and so I had to climb on top and I left my underwear and stuff laying in the floor and Tammy threw them under the bed and they went and got to grandma because daddy, being a private investigator, went out there and looked in her Mustang and saw my school books in the floorboard. So he knew I wasn't in school.

Well, that school done gone, so they got. We was looking.

[Todd]

So they go to the place of business that the grandparents owned and got the grandma, she had a key. And she comes in the house and Daddy, because Daddy was.

We could find the way to get in. And you know everybody, I go, I'm

[Todd]

up on the top of this shelf in his closet and I am stretched out like this right here, like a corpse under that quail, okay? And daddy come in. The grandma hit the bedroom first. She said, tammy, where's Todd? I don't know, at school. And daddy coming to her, he said, I'm going to ask you one time, where's Todd? He's in there in my closet. He scared her so bad she pissed on herself. And daddy come in that closet and he's rummaging through and I'm looking down, I'm like, not today, Satan. Not the day am I coming down. And he snapped. When he looked up and saw me up there, he grabbed a hold of my ankle, snatched my ass down. And I was buck ass naked. And her grandma standing there ain't That a shame for you people to do you like that.

Shame ain't in you. And my daddy wore my ass out too. And I was sitting in the back seat, sitting on my hands like this, and the grandma sitting right beside me and she was praying. And daddy said, when I get you home, I'll promise you one thing. Your ass will know it when you leave the next time.

They will. Was this other time and I was with this girl and I'd come back from California and she was engaged. I didn't know she was engaged.

The guy flies his car in the driveway. It was a red 300 ZX. And he's just squalling his tires of my dad. You know where the Dan is? Daddy was sitting in his recliner looking out. Daddy said, who's that stupid mother out there with that car squalling them tires? And I looked at, I said, I don't know. And he said, stupid son of a come in my driveway like that. He went and opened the door, went out there and the guy got out of the car and he said, is Todd here? Daddy said, who the hell are you? And he told him. And daddy had gone to school with his. Daddy said, what the hell you want with my son? He said, he's been screwing my fiance. Daddy said, well, your problem's your fiance, not my son. He said, well, I'm a whoop his ass. And daddy said, well, I'd tell you to go check with your daddy before you do that, because in order to get to one of mine, you're going to go through me. And he was like 15 years older than me. And daddy said, nor. He said, well, if I was you, I'd go check with your daddy. He said, and let him tell you if that's a good move because to get to one of mine, you're going to go through me. And I remember Daddy come, he squalled that car, got out there and daddy come to the door.

So that's what parents said.

The truth ain't in you. You better stay away from that gal. You go end up shot. Mama come to what is. He said, not a damn thing.

Then I was in her front living room, where nobody allowed to go in that front living room because that's where she had all her good furniture, where nobody could sit. Only company could sit on that. And I would go in that front living room after school, me and my

girlfriend, and put the coffee table against the door. We come in and be tore all the pieces.

[Todd]

I was sitting at the end of the table. Mama made brown rice and pork chops and corn and biscuits. And I was sitting at the table. Daddy had a biscuit in one hand, his fork, and Mama said, todd, why are you removing my furniture in my good room? Don't go back in there. You go tear my furniture. Furniture up. Daddy never missed a beat. He said, he's in there screwing that gal. Gene, you better shut your nasty, filthy mouth in my house. My youngin wouldn't do such. Daddy said, all right. She went to get her. Went to get the shower. He said, I'm going to tell you one time and I'm not going to tell you no more. You better not bring nobody up in your mama's house again. Do you understand me? Yes, sir. How long you been going with that gal? Don't you lie to me. Three months. I cracked because Daddy could have worked for the FBI and CIA altogether, because all he had to do was raise his voice. And you either shit on yourself or pissed on yourself. It was one of the two.
