Jason
I am unashamed. What about you?
Zach
Welcome back to Unashamed. We just had a whole podcast before the podcast, but there was nothing worthy of being on the podcast. I don't think so.
Jason
Was it? I'm not sure.
Guest/Additional Speaker
Look, here's a lot worthy of it. Just the question is, can we put it out there? That's the.
Zach
Well, it started with me looking at Zach's side. It's like it's a foreign language. And then he noticed it's upside down. The printing is upside down on your hat, Zach. I don't know if you know that or not.
Jason
Well, and then he said he got it out of a bin that was free. And it's kind of like the reason I don't pull over on the side of the road and get a free couch.
Zach
When you see a chair there.
Guest/Additional Speaker
I didn't say that.
Jason
I said.
Guest/Additional Speaker
What I said was. I said it was in the chair next to me and I needed a hat, so I just picked it up and put it on.
Zach
Well, you had a look about you today that I thought looked good. You kind of got a little shy jacket going. And. But then I looked at your hat and then I was like, I can't read it. It's like another language. And then it's. It says do what backwards and upside down.
Jason
Yeah.
Zach
I don't know.
Guest/Additional Speaker
Is it upside down?
Zach
It's upside down and backwards from our angle, I guess.
Jason
I think it fits you perfectly.
Guest/Additional Speaker
I don't know.
Jason
I've never seen a product because I thought.
Zach
Because I.
Jason
After I thought it was some Hebrew word that he was going to tell us what it actually meant.
Guest/Additional Speaker
And the back says raised rowdy, Whatever that means.
Jason
Raised rowdy just shows you that free.
Zach
Merchandise I don't know, but somebody just got a good mention that they pulled it off. So.
Guest/Additional Speaker
So if you're. You have a business called Raised Rowdy.
Zach
Where people at Raised Rowdy are fist bumping right now.
Jason
I've had.
Guest/Additional Speaker
You got a shameless plug.
Jason
I've had a lot of things happen in the last week or so that have been like the first.
Zach
It just seems like we haven't filmed in a week. Yes.
Jason
Yeah, they're strange. Well, I went to Kansas and went hunting.
Zach
Did you notice in the notes I put Jay's trip to the land of the red Leggers?
Jason
Al, I hate to tell you this. I did not read the notes today, nor do I have any notes.
Zach
I'm not surprised.
Jason
But I went to Kansas and about an hour into the hunt, my buddy, my good buddy Barrett, standing up in the. In his corner of the blind and out for some reason, I think we had a downed duck that I was hurriedly trying to go after. And he had. In the construction of his blind, he had a metal rod sticking out right about head high. If he bent over and tried to get out real quick, that thing hit.
Guest/Additional Speaker
Me.
Jason
And I lost all mode of being for 15 seconds. And here's what's fascinating because we're filming this for duck Commander. There was a cameraman, unbeknownst to me, right on my heels, he was going to film this. So I hit this metal rod, knocked myself out for 10 seconds.
Zach
And this is on camera.
Jason
No, he was just. He wasn't filming.
Zach
He was getting ready to get well.
Jason
He was just falling. He was chasing me. And I'm not used to cameramen chasing me like that. Well, after I hit it, he hit was a double dope option. And we're both frolicking on the floor. And Barrett said, yep, I should have been sitting down because everyone who's ever tried to do this has hit that rock. And someone said, you know, we might need a saw if this keeps happening.
Zach
Is he doing it for amusement now?
Jason
So I thought, okay, I'm okay. Okay. But I looked at the cameraman and, you know, there he was dressed like a cameraman. I had two hats on. I had a little cushion, so I didn't think there was any blood, which there was, but he just had like a flat bill hat on. And I'm. Blood is coming down his face.
Zach
Oh, no.
Jason
And his looked way worse.
Zach
Even though it was facial lacerations.
Jason
Well, it was right on his forehead. It just cut him right in the top of his head, all the way to the back of his head. And just a. Like a goose egg popped up on his head. Oh, it was. It was bad. And tears were streaming down his eyes, and I couldn't make fun of him because tears were streaming down my eyes.
Zach
But was the new guy that a little intern, the young guy?
Jason
No. They hired these two guys out. They met us. I think he was from Virginia. But look, we had a.
Zach
He'll never be back.
Jason
We had a great. No, I think he'll be back because we had a great Bible study as the two days developed.
Zach
Well, of course, when you. When the guy almost dies, you know, you got him right there, right where you want.
Jason
So I didn't have a good. We had a great hunt. Got some spectacular footage. I'm sure you'll see that somewhere on the Internet at a future date. But I did not shoot well because I was perfectly fine till that happened. And I think I had a concussion because for three days, it was searing pain. I felt nauseated.
Zach
Yeah, that's concussion.
Jason
And when I looked at it in the mirror because I didn't take my hat off for three days, which. I know that sounds crazy, but we're at. Well, you just. Yes. In Kansas. You just go. I slept on the couch because everybody that was in our party snore so bad.
Zach
Yeah.
Jason
It's the only place I thought I could sleep, and. But when I got home and took a shower for the first time in three days. I know. That's yucky. I looked up there and thought, I have a wound up on my head. And it just looked like a. Just crusted. Now, Brick. Yeah. So I live to tell about it. But then, so yesterday, or, let's see, day before, I heard a lot about.
Zach
The hunt, but I never heard this part. I never.
Jason
Oh, it was terrible. And I shot so bad because every time my gun went off, if you have a concussion.
Guest/Additional Speaker
Terrible.
Jason
It was just. It was so miserable. And I'm giving that as an excuse. That's the only thing I can think of. I just didn't want to shoot because I had a headache for three days.
Zach
You got an elbow problem in your golfing. Like, when. You know when the ball's gonna. When you're gonna strike the ground, you wince, and it just.
Jason
Yeah. You know, it's crazy is because one of the members of our party is the nurse man, Chad. So I'm like, well, I have my own doctor with me. He's a nurse. Whatever they call him.
Zach
He's a nurse practitioner.
Jason
Yeah. So he's like, well, you just need to get plenty of rest. And I'm like, I'm with you in Kansas. He's like, giving me the speech.
Zach
He goes into the. Like, you're in the er. Yeah.
Jason
I said, so basically, there's no cure. He's like, there's no cure. Now, maybe you should just hang out at the camp while we hunt. Us men.
Zach
Yeah, you don't go while we hunt.
Jason
So we made it. But anyway, I come back, and we had some guests. It was actually our friend Blake Cook, who was on the podcast, and we had a social gathering.
Guest/Additional Speaker
Yeah.
Zach
He and his wife were in town.
Jason
This weekend, Saturday, for a duck hunt. Look. Sadie and her husband Christian, they came.
Zach
I heard about this. Did I understand that she had never been in a duck line before?
Jason
Never been in a duck line.
Zach
Which. That shocked me.
Jason
I just.
Zach
Because the way I heard it was that she had. Once dad was gone, she kind of regretted she never went hunting with dad.
Jason
Yeah, she did. Yeah. That was the main reason she went. And then we had John Luke there. He just wanted to see his sister hunting for the first time. We had Christian's brother and wife there. And Blake was there, the pitcher. His brother used to pitch because he waves. Talking about baseball.
Zach
I guess he plays in the national.
Jason
And you know what? It developed because we never fired our guns. No ducks came in the decoys. Which was fine with me because I was just. Because I said I gave a safety speech, and I was like, the number one goal of this gathering is survival.
Zach
Survival of the fittest.
Jason
And so it basically turned out to be a Bible study in a duck line.
Zach
Now, was Blake with y', all, too?
Jason
Blake was there. Okay. So we. We. We gave him the secret hole this morning. He's been here for a couple days because he spoke locally and gave away all those bicycles.
Zach
Yeah, yeah. His company gave away, like, 200 bicycles.
Jason
Yeah, it was. Fascinating story. But we had one little place on our property where the ducks have kind of been nesting. And here's another first I didn't know that this year, for the first time in the history of my duck hunting career, they're closing the first split on a Monday.
Zach
Yeah.
Jason
So I went.
Zach
Which is why we planned a podcast schedule, never knowing all that, because that's never happened.
Jason
So we're starting late, and I did not fire my weapon today. We had a chance at three. I told you. That was one story I told you before we started, but we never had a chance. But we put Jay and Blake and their little entourage in the one place that hadn't been hunted.
Zach
They had to shoot them Up.
Jason
They had to shoot them up. And the one chance we had, I was hunting with the not as skilled hunters in my blind. And we had three come in on their side. And I just looked down and thought, they're not going to be able to shoot those. So I tried to give them one more pass.
Zach
You don't think was still your secret concussion fear now because you may be like a. You may be like a lab that gets scared of guns now.
Jason
So I actually feel better. But I was going to tell you another first. Yesterday I went. Well, I'll tell you two first. Yesterday I went and had to pick up decoys at another place. And I had one bunch of big mallards. Ten mallards circle me 30 times. I was by myself. I only hunted about 45 minutes before sunset. And they didn't come in. But it was sad. But as soon as shooting hours was over, I walked out to pick up the decoys and I heard just wings flapping. I looked up and a snow goose comes in the decoys while I'm standing there and lit 15 yards from me. And I thought, is the Lord fixed to come back? I've hunted there for 30 years and I've never seen a snow goose show any interest in anything down there. And it lit in the decoys, which it wasn't legal shooting hours. And so I just kind of waved and he got up and headed south.
Zach
So I don't know the saying lost as a goose fit that duck.
Jason
That. I mean, that duck. That goose was lost.
Zach
He was lost.
Jason
And he saw me down there messing around with duck decoys and he lit. So that was kind of weird. But yesterday I was going to tell you a story. So we. Or when we had the little gather social gathering and the duck blind, which was fine because we don't have a lot of ducks. And I thought, yeah, come on. I thought we would get a shot at something, but we didn't. Well, on the way home, every year in this. In our community south of West Monroe, oh, yeah, they do a parade. I don't know. Is it a Christmas parade?
Zach
It's the Balconville Christmas redneck parade. Yeah, it is a redneck Christmas.
Jason
It's a. Do they call it a red.
Zach
Call it a redneck Christmas?
Guest/Additional Speaker
Call a redneck. I've been in that parade.
Zach
I've actually and mom have been the grand Marshalls.
Jason
Well, that tells you all you need to know. Well, every year I've been lucky because I see the long traffic and I'm like, oh, no, it's that parade. And so I usually turn around.
Zach
Thousands come to it.
Jason
So look, it's a big deal. Yesterday, I'm the fifth car at the red light when the cop car comes up and stops. And I thought, what are we doing here? And I realize they're fixing to do this parade, and I'm the fifth car. I'm going to be here forever.
Zach
You have the best seat in the house.
Jason
I stayed there about 30 minutes, and I watched the first few floats, and I thought, I can't do this. I've got to take an alternate route. And so I turn around, and here's the picture that I want to convey to make our spiritual transition here. Here's what I realized. So the rednecks are celebrating, and I can call them that because I am one deep at heart.
Zach
And our family have been the grand marshals.
Jason
Yeah. And so they're so happy. And there are thousands of people, not hundreds, thousands watching this. And it's a parade, and they have shut down the entire city. There's no way in or out. But I tried to take an alternate route, which I had taken in years past, but they had expanded the route. And so by the time I go two roads over, 20 minutes in, I'm back stuck at a red light. It's like, no. And I can barely see the parade. But here's what I noticed. All the people standing, enjoying the parade, they're happy, happy, happy. All the people who have somewhere to.
Zach
Be, they're not happy.
Jason
They're angry.
Zach
Well, let me mention before we get to our study today about our good friends at Family Research Council. Jase mentioned the division he saw here in our neighborhood over people that were, like, for something and against something. And I think that's a kind of a standing picture of what it looks like in our country now. You know, it's like I talked about that in my sermon as well. But, you know, we need people, like, standing up for us. And that's what Family Research Council does. They're on Capitol Hill. They defend faith, they protect families, and they remind leaders that biblical things matter. And so they're saying is pray, vote, stand, which I really love. So Tony Perkins is a great friend. He's from Louisiana. We want you to check these guys out. Help FRC keep defending what matters most. Visit FRC.org.
Jason
And it made me think about our world within a world as kingdom people. We're celebrating that we're going to live forever. We have forgiveness. We have found the love of God. We're representing God and we want to have a parade about it. And yet the people who don't know what's going on are not participating. They're angry. There were more nearx and one wreck of people trying to turn around. And the only way I got out of this thing is because an ambulance had to get through the parade because two people had collided behind me trying to turn around and get out of there. And so everybody had to move around a little bit to let the ambulance go.
Zach
And you saw your crease.
Jason
I got in behind that ambulance and I said, let's ride wherever we're going. He turned off. I got through. Thirty minutes later, I was at my house, which wasn't terrible, but it was three hours. It was a three hour delay just to get around. So there's my spiritual application.
Guest/Additional Speaker
So about 2050, more than a third of the world's population will live in Africa, While less than 4% will live here in North America. Entire nations will be shaped by the children who are growing up today. And our friends at Tomorrow Clubs are stepping up to ensure the next generation in Zimbabwe is discipled by the church and not the world. So today we're helping them focus on one of their greatest opportunities. It's in the Binga district of Zimbabwe, one of the most isolated and disadvantaged regions of the area. Before Tomorrow Clubs arrived, Binga had virtually no kids ministry whatsoever. And now local churches are discipling thousands of children each week. But that's not enough because 40 more villages are asking for Tomorrow Clubs support. And we want to help them reach 5,000 kids in these villages before the end of the year so you can be a part of shaping the church of Tomorrow in this forgotten corner of the world. One of the reasons why we're partnering with Tomorrow Clubs is because we share a like minded vision of long term discipleship, relationships and partnering with local churches, raising up the next generation of faith. So here's the deal. $100 trains a tomorrow club leader. $250 covers one time cost to equip a local church. And if God places it on your heart, you can sponsor an entire community for just $2,000, which will launch and sustain the ministry in a new community for an entire year. But any amount will help and every gift is matched for a limited time so you can double your impact. Join the bingo bless@TomorrowClubs.org Unashamed. That's TomorrowClubs.org Unashamed.
Zach
Yeah, I heard about that. What's funny, Jay, is on the notes you didn't read it says Sadie joins the Duckman Blake returns and gives away bikes. And the only thing I didn't have was the redneck Christmas.
Guest/Additional Speaker
Redneck Christmas.
Jason
So I covered it. I was a part of that. Well, I spoke at the Hub, which is a little community gathering in downtown Monroe.
Zach
Yeah. That Will and Corey kind of.
Jason
They kind of do. Yeah. Oversee it last week. And he spoke last night.
Zach
So this testimony.
Jason
I said, how'd it go? No, But I said, how'd it go? And he's like, I went way too long. And he said, I feel bad about that. I said, don't feel bad.
Zach
If it was good, it was good. Which is kind of funny because I preached yesterday and I only went like 25 minutes.
Jason
I thought it was spectacular. But I will say this. It sounded like an overview of about two podcasts we did.
Zach
That's exactly what it was. I had already started working on some of my stuff, but then you had done a similar lesson, like. Yeah, a week ago. And so I'm listening to and I'm making notes. You know, I'm a note.
Jason
I thought it was fantastic.
Zach
So it was. We were doing a little series about Christmas gifts this. This December, but it was king related. So I was. So I. That's what I did. And Jason, a similar lesson. And I took some of his stuff with some of my stuff, but it was really good. I mean, I thought it went great, but I just didn't realize. I look up and it was 25 minutes I was done.
Jason
Yeah.
Guest/Additional Speaker
Which.
Jason
And I got there.
Zach
Sometimes a short sermon is good.
Jason
I got there one minute before you started, and I left a few minutes after. But no, it was fan. I thought it was. You know, when you talk about who we follow and serve, which is kind of going back to my parade thought it is so exciting.
Zach
Yeah.
Jason
And the people responded to you.
Zach
They did. They did. And we were. We had an altar all. Everybody was in the same room yesterday. So it was exciting. It was a lot of good back and forth, as they say.
Jason
Yeah. That's a good lesson, if you will put the way to listen to that. I thought. I thought it was excellent.
Zach
Yeah. It's called Gifts Fit for a King. And it was kind of a setup for what we were doing the rest of the summer. But I got into the Three Wise Men and all that stuff. We'll do that on Christmas Eve. It's just interesting stuff. And I got into these cultural kings and I was able to tell the story. Not the full story, but I told the story I've told on here many times about dad saying he traded in the king of beers for the king of kings.
Jason
That's one of the greatest stories ever.
Zach
It is. It's such a good line. Yeah, I was talking about the. Zach, My lead in on the sermon was the no kings, which I. We had talked about a little bit on the podcast a couple of podcast ago.
Jason
I think we talked about it a lot.
Zach
Yeah. And so we had. Is that kind of gave the. The narrative about, you know, that we don't want to follow anybody on earth. And we kind of came to the idea that there's no king but Jesus. And I use that line, Zach. And when I said it yesterday, it was just an eruption came out of the audience, which is really no king but Jesus. So that was my. That was my line.
Guest/Additional Speaker
If that doesn't land in your church and you got issues.
Zach
Right, exactly, exactly. This is what it's all about. So in our text, we're in John, chapter 20. And we had gotten into the. The last time we were together, and it's been a minute, we had gotten into the empty tomb. I think we did the first nine verses. Whenever Peter and John, we assume it's John run to the tomb. Of course, Mary Magdalene is already there. And then you read about her interaction in some of the other gospels. But then he's going to mention that in our next text in John, chapter 20. But I don't know if there was anything else that you guys wanted to say about the first nine verses in terms of kind of the back and forth, them looking in there. I think we mentioned last time, I think I mentioned last time that we had three different Greek words for see. And it was kind of interesting because the first one, John kind of glances in and sees that he's not there. Peter Runton just goes right in, charges in. And the next Greek word for Saul is he kind of theorizes that he's gone. Like the stuff's laid out, but he's not there. So it's a different Greek word for see. And then the third one, the third one is that John sees and believes, and that's in verse eight. And that word is to understand something finally. And it's funny because John says in his book, in the verse, in verse nine, he says they still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.
Jason
And he's got to be talking about Scripture, the Hebrew scriptures, the Old Testament, which was we've said before, even though it's in there, alluded to, it was not clear because none of the rulers understood. And what I mean by rulers in the spiritual forces of evil celestial rulers that Jesus would ultimately defeat. Think that Hebrews 2. I bring that up all the time, but by his death he destroyed him who had the power of death, that is the devil. That's Hebrews 2:14 and free us from our, our slavery of the fear of death. So it's profound statement, but because you would think they would read it because a lot of those scriptures talking about redemption, the one coming, the son coming, think like in the first couple of chapters in the book of Luke and those songs, Zechariah song, talking about John the Baptist and the word redemption is used of this one that is coming. And then you see all the stories that he does where the miracles. Think of just all the healings that took place. He's showing that he has the power of death related things like when we have a skin disease or our back is hurting. These are all reminders that death is coming. Our body is breaking down no matter what. You, as Phil famously said, you can work out and eat right. You'll die pretty healthy, but you're still going to die. And so I think that was just missed from the Old Testament scriptures because how could you even conceive it? You're just not thinking, oh, he's going to redeem Israel and all of humanity while he's at it by coming back from the dead.
Zach
And you read the text that Peter quotes in Acts 2 from Psalms where it talked about his body would not see decay.
Jason
Yeah. Which was again, what is that, 31 or 16 in Psalms. Yeah.
Guest/Additional Speaker
What's interesting though, when you think about the significance of the empty Temo. Jay's kind of mentioned it in the last one of the last previous podcasts, said it was this place of kind of a sanctuary of the new creation that was going to burst forth in the resurrection of Christ. But there's some interesting, what seem to be obscure verses in here that I think have tremendous impact in those first nine verses of chapter 20. But I wanted to read something before I read it. This is In Leviticus, chapter 16 in verse, let's see here about verse four. And kind of give you an idea here. This is when God's talking to Moses and he's basically like, you need to tell Aaron, you know, Aaron, don't tell him not to go into the holy of holies unless he can. He can go. He can only go in there in this one day. It's the day of Yom Kippur when he makes the sin offering. And it says in verse three in this way. This is verse three of Leviticus 16. In this way, Aaron shall come into the holy place with a bull from the herd for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering. And he shall put on the holy linen coat and shall have the linen undergarment on his body. And he shall tie the sash around his waist. He shall wear the linen turban. These are the holy garments. He shall bathe his body in water and. And then put them on. And he shall take from the congregation of the people of Israel two male goats for a sin offering and one ram for a burnt offering. Then basically, he's going to go in there and he's going to essentially make the sacrifice. And then he's going to do something that's kind of interesting. He's going to leave the linens behind. And that was part of the Leviticus. Go back and read the whole chapter, Leviticus, chapter 16. He's going to leave. He's going to remove the linens, and he's going to lead them in the sanctuary before he puts on his priestly garments after that. So the reason why this matters, because when you get to John 20, what you're actually seeing is you're seeing another picture of the temple, because you guys remember what was on top of the Ark of the Covenant in the Holy of holies that was guarding it. It was the two angels, the cherub.
Zach
And then it was the seat. They made a seat. Right.

And so here in the empty tomb, you have the angels that are on each side of the slab where Jesus is body laid. And then what do you see lying, according to John, chapter 20, verse 6 and 7? You see the linens that Christ left behind. And so what you're witnessing in this empty tomb is you're actually witnessing the accomplishment of everything that was in that holy of holies. You're seeing it right there. That's the whole point of the book of Hebrews, by the way, is that Christ is accomplishing all of this. He leaves the linens behind, just like the priest would leave the linens behind as well. You have the two angels guarding over the tomb, I mean, guarding over the slab, just like they guarded over the Ark of the Covenant. Like everything is being fulfilled in this moment. So this empty tomb is not just like a middle part of the story. It's a significant moment here in biblical history.
Zach
It's a great point, Zach. In fact, it reminded me of a text I read in my sermon Yesterday from Zachariah 6, when he says, tell him what the Lord Almighty says. Here is the man whose name is the branch. He will branch out from his place and build the temple of the Lord. It is he who will build the temple of the Lord. And he will be clothed with majesty and will sit and rule on his throne, and he will be a priest on the throne, and there will be harmony between the two. And it's another Old Testament picture, which is quite a bit later, of course, with the minor prophets, with Zechariah. But he's painting the same picture you just described way back in Leviticus, this idea that in Jesus you had both a king and a high priest, even in that moment, which is very powerful, which I said that was the coronation of Jesus as king, was his resurrection, and then the rain is the ascension. So, I mean, it's just right there, you see the whole Thing.
Jason
Well, to just back up on the verses that we were referring to in Psalm, Psalms, Psalm 16, 8, 9, and 10. I'll read verse 9 and 10. It says, Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices. My body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. And that's the same passage that Peter would later use in Acts 2, first sermon. And my point is, John is saying here, well, they didn't even understand from Scripture that Jesus had to be raised from the dead. Yeah, but they figured it out.
Zach
Yeah, they did.
Jason
That understanding of seeing, which what Zach just accurately described, all of this started making sense to him. Like, oh, which. Look, it's a familiar thing that Jesus brought up. You remember in John 5, where he's like, you study these scriptures, thinking he was telling the Jewish leaders that you will possess eternal life, but you refuse to come to me and have life. These scriptures are talking about me, and yet you refuse to come to me and have life. So it was in there the whole time, which is what we do now is why we keep going back or forward. Because the Scriptures are pointing to this to Jesus, because it then makes sense. On why Paul would say, if Christ hadn't been raised from the dead, you're dead in your sins, your faith is futile, your preaching is useless. Remember in 1 Corinthians 15, the whole thing is about the resurrection, but he's tying everything to that because there is a defeat of the enemies that occurred with Jesus coming back from the dead, which he was showing the signs of that and all the healings, and seems like they would have figured it out. I mean, I thought about that story in Luke where, remember the woman who was bent over for 18 years or whatever? And he basically uses a word for redemption on what's fixing to occur. And then when he refers to it, he's like, satan had this woman bound up for 18 years. So he's equating this defeat of the evil one in that he can bring people out from under not only suffering, but death itself. All these signs of death can be gone. Oh, yeah.
Zach
Which is powerful. I had never. I had never thought about that. Pictures of the two angels on the end of that slab. I mean.
Jason
Yeah, we talked about that earlier.
Zach
I had not thought about that. I don't remember that. But that's a beautiful.
Guest/Additional Speaker
I'll tell you what's interesting. It's so funny how. How much of this really does go into the term. We talk about a lot. Eschatology. But I was with a guy this week who is a Jewish guy, and he is in. He's in Hollywood. He's done a ton of movies that we've all seen. And we just kind of connected at this event we were at. And we got to talking about it started off with the. He's building out this deconsolidation. Like, it's complex, but it's basically cryptocurrency. It's all deconsolidation of money stuff. He was explaining it to me, and he said, man, I really feel like everything. We need to deconsolidate. We need to deconsolidate. And I thought he was a Christian at first. And I said, were you? Are you a Christian? And he said, oh, I love Jesus. I think Jesus is amazing. He said, but I'm Jewish. And I said, I'll tell you what really needs to be deconsolidated. He said, what's that? And I said, I think that what you see if you read the Bible is you would see that there's a deconsolidation of the temple, there's a deconsolidation of the priesthood, there's a deconsolidation of the sacrifice. And he's like, what do you mean? I said, when's the last time you've been into the temple? He said, we don't have one. I said, interesting. I said, when's the last time that you've seen a sacrifice? When have you made a sacrifice for your sin or had a priest make one? He said, never. I said, when have you met with a priest or a high priest? He said, never. And so I went through the whole, literally, Bible with this guy and just explained it to him that what you're seeing in Jesus is you're seeing a deconsolidation of the temple and that Jesus will become that cornerstone, and then we'll be little deconsolidated temples running around. I said, you see a deconsolidated priesthood. Jesus is the high priest, but we're little priests, deconsolidated priests running around. And I said, and you'll see a deconsolidated sacrifice where Christ was the ultimate sacrifice, but then we offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. This is your spiritual life to worship. I said, you realize that that's what you're called to. And he said, man, I just feel like God's doing something in my life right now. I don't know what. He's wanting me to know something. I don't know what it is. But I know. I'm here for a reason. I said, he didn't want you to know something. He wants you to know someone. And his name is Jesus. And I thought, man, it's interesting that Jesus, really, even today, like, I'm talking to this guy, he knew the Old Testament scriptures, but he had not. He's not yet met the one that they point to. Not really met him. He knew about him, but he hadn't really submitted his life to Christ. And I was just like, that's so cool. I'm seeing this everywhere we turn now. And you see it right here in John, chapter 20. You see it. Jesus is the fulfillment of the whole thing.
Jason
Yeah.
Zach
That guy was the embodiment of that verse 9. He didn't understand from the scriptures.
Jason
Well, yeah. It's so weird you brought up Leviticus 16, because a few podcasts ago, we talked about the two different goats and the day of atonement and scapegoat. One of my buddies sent me a text, and it just said, but the scapegoat died. That's all it said. Well, when I first read it, I thought. What? I mean, it was no explanation. I've been listening to your podcast. It was just. But the. And I thought. I think we talked about that on the podcast. So I went through this, and so then we talked about it yesterday at church after your sermon. You know, I was like, well, I mean, you had no explanation there. He was thinking, well, even though he didn't die in the moment, because he was like, okay, well, one of them did die. And one of them. One of them. They sent him out alive. Which, look, I don't claim to be a scholar on that, but when you look at it, somehow Jesus is showing both of those goats in New Testament because I brought up Hebrews 13. It's a really interesting verse in Hebrews, where it's like, so Jesus suffered outside the camp to make the people holy. Let us then go to him outside the camp burying the disgrace he bore.
Zach
Jase, we've all been through it. At some point, our pets get sick. You take them to the vet. You know, they. You start piling up the bills. They really. Sometimes they can help, sometimes they can't. It's. It's just kind of this cycle that goes. And, you know, pets have a lot of issues. They get itchy skin, stiff joints, upset stomachs, ear infections. But a lot of times it doesn't. And the reason why is because our good friend Dr. Dennis. Dennis Black, who created rough greens, has. Has taught us that the problem Many times with pets is the worn down immune system and that's the processed food that they're eating. And so he's come up with a great supplement for our pets. J, you have some there in front of you, the rough chews there, I see. And we feed them to our animals. And your animals, they're excited, right? When they get the rough green.
Jason
Well, they're excited and I'm excited because when they're sick, they don't go outside for whatever reason. And then that is the worst thing that can happen inside your house. So when I bring a bag of this out, they're excited and I'm excited because they're more healthy.
Zach
So we're asking you to join us and thousands of pet owners who are breaking that vet visit cycle and seeing the difference for themselves right now. You can try it for yourself with a free jump start trial bag. Just cover the shipping. Because the best doctor visit is the one you never make. Go to roughgreens.com use the promo code unashamed to break the cycle today. That's R u f f greens.com promo code unashamed.
Jason
So it's like you had a one lamb as a. As a symbolic purification, sacrifice for the sins of the people. And then you have this other one. And it gets confusing because the word for that is sometimes translated Azazel, which then we talked about that and it just seems to be recognizing that it's like a. Some people call that goat, like the goat of expulsion. Like you're getting that out into the wilderness.
Zach
The main thing is it has to be away from us. The idea was the. And it really is, it's. I mean, it came from God. So obviously it's. It's good. The idea is, and Zach talks about this all the time, you can't have the presence of God and the presence of sin.
Jason
Yeah.
Zach
And flaw. And so that's. Therein lies the problem. And so they were symbolically dealing with it, but then Jesus took the symbols away because he actually dealt with it.
Jason
Well, that's what he was asked. He was like, well, how do you simplify that? And I was like, that's a really good question. Yeah, because you read that Leviticus 16 and you see these symbols. But I made the point. I know Jesus fulfilled it. He fulfilled this. And it comes back to the presence of God. God wants to live with people. That's how this all started. And then the interruption wasn't just that human sin. It was also an interruption of an evil presence. Tempting, lying, opposing God. And so not only was God going to deal with man's sin and the cross says a lot about that, how he dealt with it, but he was also going to deal with these enemies that were aiding and abetting to that happening. And it gives you a picture. And Jesus fulfilled all that. But it was very hard for these disciples in the moment to wrap their head around all this is the point. And I think that's why he said that they just didn't understand from scripture. And I still think us today are having a problem with that. Even post resurrection.
Zach
Oh, there are no doubts that's true. And the other thing is that God chose, has chosen to do this over the expansion from our concept time and the humanity going from a handful of people to now 8 billion people. I mean, like, why did he choose to do it the way he's done it and through Jewish history and all this? It's the way he decided he was going to do it. I mean, I understand you'd like to say, man, I wish this were less complicated, but human beings are complicated.
Jason
But don't you find it that that's our problem is weak and why we don't recognize it because deep down we want to do it the way we think it makes sense. And there's a God and we're not him. And I think he pulled it off because this happened before technology and everything else. And it's probably the most known story in the history of the world.
Zach
Right? As it should be. As it should be because nobody's ever done this before. Let me read this next heart of the text and we'll get into it just a little bit on this podcast and the next. So the John leaves it off there. They didn't really understand it, but they will, as Jay said. In fact, it's probably going to come later in the reading when he breathes the Holy Spirit into them that they start figuring things out. Verse 10 says this disciples go back to their homes, which at this point, or I was is I would call them hideouts because, you know, things are upside down. They don't know what's going on. Jesus is not there and they really still don't understand what's going on. Did somebody steal his body? Is he still alive? But Mary stood outside the tomb crying. So this is Mary Magdalene. But there's also some other women that are in one of the other gospels or at least one more. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and here's where she sees two angels in white seated where Jesus body had been One at the head and the other at the foot. That's that picture Zach described, which really, is that the COVID for the Ark of the Covenant, which is amazing. They asked her, woman, why are you crying? And then she says, they've taken my Lord away. So she thought somebody stole his body. And I don't know where they put him. At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. And there's been a lot made of that. What does that mean? And he says, woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for? Thinking he was the gardener and he kind of was Jay.
Jason
Yeah, that's a good mistake.
Zach
Yeah. She said, sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you've put him and I will get him. So Jesus says to her, mary. She turns toward him and she cries out in Aramaic, rabboni, which means teacher. So now she's recognizing. I don't know if it's from his voice or just he did something to make himself recognizable.
Jason
Yeah, I think it's kind of lost in translation. But however he said her name in.
Zach
That way, she got it.
Jason
She's like, oh, this is Jesus.
Zach
This is him. Jesus says, do not hold on to me. And there's been a lot made of that. It could be just as simple as she probably grabbed him, you know, like, oh, I got him, you know, grabbed it. She probably was at his feet.
Jason
It's like. It's going to be like old times.
Zach
Exactly. Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God. And I never realized.
Jason
This is a profound statement.
Zach
Very profound. Because he's never said that to them before. This is something new and very powerful, which we'll discuss. Mary Magdalene then went to the disciples with the news. I have seen the Lord. So the first person to witness the resurrected Lord was a woman who had had seven demons cast out of her.
Jason
So much for, you know, this God is demeaning about women. I mean, the first person who got to declare he's risen.
Zach
I mean, think about Mary. Not only was it a woman in that culture and then that system where she could not testify in a court proceeding or anything else, but she had also been tainted by demons, which would mean she was double disqualified. I mean, this. Everything about this.
Guest/Additional Speaker
Yes. It's what they call an embarrassing detail if you're in the apologetics community. And what they mean by that is this is a detail that it would have been embarrassing in the time that it was written. So if you're. One of the thoughts is from a lot of the New Testament scholars is that if you're making up the story, then if you're making up the story in that time period, you would never have the testimony of a woman being the first witness to the scene, because the testimony of a woman wasn't credible in this particular time period. And so the very fact that this is a detail that's in the text, it says that it actually gives evidence that this is real. Like, they weren't making the story out. There wasn't any. Like, they would not have put this in there if this was a made up story, because it wouldn't have been believable in its time period, but it's believable now. So now we look back on that kind of with divine wisdom from God, and we're like, well, yeah, there's nothing. Why would a woman's testimony not be credible? Right. And so it's one of the evidences that historians use for the validity of the claims of the New Testament, at least that they believed that the tomb was empty. I mean, that is universally agreed upon amongst New Testament scholarship. Even those who don't necessarily believe that Christ rose from the dead, they do all agree that the tomb was empty. And then there's different explanations of why it may be empty, but there's no really big debate over that.
Zach
So one of the things about getting older, Jason, is you appreciate your sleep, I think now more than ever. And of course, you got hunting season going on. You got a lot of stuff going on. But Helix mattresses help us with our sleep. And you guys even just got a new one for your re. Redo of your Nashville place, right?
Jason
We did. I mean, our place got hit by a tornado, and one of the first things we did was move in a new Helix mattress into the new house.
Zach
Zach's sick, but I'm sure he's getting some rest on his Helix Sleep mattress as well. I think he was the midnight Lux sleep quiz. And that's how you match your mattress to the way you like to sleep. Zach was the midnight, I was the moonlight. Because, you know, I'm a little bit more of a, like a little softer mattress. We've had ours for, I think about four years now. Best sleep we've ever had. You get to try it risk free for 120 days. You could send it back, but you won't want to. So we're all part of the Helix family, much less hip and shoulder pain than we had in previous mattresses. So I think you're going to love it. Go to helixsleep.comunashamed for 20% off site wide. That's helixsleep.comunashamed for 20% off site wide. Make sure you enter our show name into the post purchase survey so they know that we sent you helixsleep.com unashamed. And it's also interesting that this is the truth of the matter as you described it, Zach, that. And that helps it understand that it's even more truthful from that standpoint, because why would you write that? But then if you go back and read the Matthew account, which I did a couple of podcasts ago, they created the Jewish leadership, created a lie that his disciples stole the body. So which, of course, and to this day, people have said that is true, or that he swooned. He didn't really die on the cross. He just came, he woke up in there and somehow got out of a sealed tomb with a Roman seal on it with two guards there. I mean, how did that happen? But what my point is, is the people in charge still were lying about it right up until it happened and then after it happened.
Jason
Yeah.
Zach
So. But the lie seemed more credible than the truth, which this woman says, oh, I saw him, and there were two angels that said, what are you doing? Why are you crying? And then I saw him. Which is amazing.
Jason
Yeah. I mean, reminded me just in a practical way of, you know, we had Blake. He's been here for about three days. And before his speech, because we went hunting Sunday morning, our little social gathering, and I said, you got your lesson ready? And he's like, no, I'm trying to figure, because this first time he's. He's been on podcasts and he's a fairly new Christian.
Zach
Yeah.
Jason
So it's the first time I'm speaking in front of a crowd. And so I was, oh, yeah, he did this. Oh, no, this was first time. So then I was kind of nervous for him, and I said, well, not that he asked for my advice, but I was just out of concern. When I said, are you ready? I mean, it is the day of here. He's like, no. I said, well, from my perspective, I mean, you were blown up in a war, serving the military. I mean, whatever vehicle he's in was blown up, and they had to put his body back together, which sent him kind of on a downward spiral for years. And all of a sudden, it also puts his heart In a place where he was open and he heard the story about Jesus. And he responded, but I said, if I was in your shoes. I said, I don't know where I got this from, but I've said it many times. I said, we're serving a God through Jesus who can't lie and he can't die. And I went over and read in Hebrews 6, where it said, there's two things where God, it's impossible for him to lie. And we brought up Jesus as our high priest earlier, which is when I first thought about sharing this. But now that we've. We're back here, I feel like I have to. I said, but one of my favorite verses in the Bible, and here we are at the resurrection. The Hebrew writer says that our high priest in verse 16 has become our priest, not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry, this is Hebrews 7:16, but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life. And he said, is that in the Bible? I said, I was. Because I wasn't reading my Bible. I was quoting it. I was like, yeah. He said, I think I'm going to use it. You care if I use that? I said, it's in the Bible. I was.
Guest/Additional Speaker
You said, it ain't mine to give away.
Jason
I said, but I just was thinking about your story. You were blown up, but now you've put your faith and trust in someone who cannot be blown up. Now they crucified him, beat him, all that, but you couldn't have blown him up either. If you can come back from a.
Zach
Roman crucifixion, yeah, you can come back from anything.
Jason
You come back from anything. And I said, I think it'd be a good icebreaker that you were blown up in a Humvee over in Afghanistan, but you're following one who can't be blown up. And then you listen to a bunch of lies on why you were blown up. But guess what? The guy who can be blown up, he gonna tell me the truth and whatever he says is right. And I was just making that analogy from where we're at in the resurrection. But the bottom line is that is the fact that changed all their life. And I think we should look at these little interactions as cause. Jesus was using these people, despite their weaknesses, to then be his representatives. That's why he said, I'm going to not just my father, but your father. He hadn't been speaking like this the whole time.
Zach
He has not said it that way.
Jason
No, to my God. He's been saying, I come from the Father, I come from the Father, Our Father. He did say that in his prayer. Our Father in heaven. I think that's the only other time that's that. But then he says, my God and your God. And so then she gets to go and you can read the other accounts. She's the first person that gets to declare the good news. I have seen the Lord. I mean, I don't think this happened by accident.
Zach
Yeah. In fact, we make a much bigger deal because it was prophecy of Jesus too, about Peter preaching the first sermon. But you're right, Jay, it's really the first sermon was this sentence, one sentence to them.
Jason
I've seen the Lord.
Zach
I have seen the Lord. I mean, that's you talk about. Because we talk about the questions that get asked. And there's another question, James, why are you crying? It's another good Jesus question. And who is it you're looking for? That was a little double.
Jason
Double? Yeah. Well, in Mark's account, in verse 9 of 16, Jesus rose early on the first day of the week. He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. She went and told those who had been with him and who were mourning and weeping when they heard that Jesus was alive and that she had seen him, they didn't believe it. And I think it comes down to they were probably saying, oh, well, you had seven demons. I mean, are you sure? But it doesn't neglect the account. Just like when we tell people today he's alive and some people don't believe it, they're like, oh, you're believing in a guy.
Zach
And when she told it, she probably said, you know, at first I thought he was a gardener and then I saw he was in there, like, oh, come on, Mary, you know.
Jason
So I think when you read all these interactions, even when he appears next to his disciples, he's then saying, as the Father sent me, I'm sending you. Then he comes to Thomas. Well, he's doubting. So you start putting all this together. Mary's crying, Thomas is doubting the disciples. They're not even believing. Peter, he's been denying, but in each case he turns it around. What does he tell Peter, go feed my sheep. He tells Mary, go tell everybody his disciples. He's like, be me in this world and breathed on them the Holy Spirit. So it's more of this passing on who we are now in Jesus.
Zach

Ep 1229 | Jase Suffers a Brutal Concussion That Leaves Him Reeling for Days
December 15, 2025
In this lively episode, the Robertson family—Jason (Jase), Zach, and their guest—share a humorous and reflective account of recent adventures centered around Jase’s dramatic concussion during a hunting trip, faith-driven reflections on life’s unexpected interruptions, and a deep biblical discussion on the resurrection passages in John 20. The story threads together personal mishaps, family events (including a redneck Christmas parade and a duck hunt featuring Sadie Robertson), and Spirit-led insights into Scripture. The natural and relatable vibe is classic Robertson: faith-filled, funny, and poignant.

True to the "Unashamed" name, the conversation is friendly, unvarnished, and rooted in Southern family warmth and humor. The speakers freely mix spiritual insight with self-deprecating stories, painting a faith that is both grounded in biblical study and lived out in daily messiness.
This episode weaves Jase’s misadventure with enduring spiritual themes: living out faith during hardship, recognizing God’s handiwork in “interruptions,” and cherishing the historic reality and ongoing power of Christ’s resurrection. Even a hunting concussion, a redneck parade, and bad shooting days become opportunities to see God’s story at work. With clear biblical teaching, humor, and storytelling, the Robertsons once again show what it means to be “Unashamed.”
