Hanna Mick is a school counselor who showed up at FETC 2026 with a truth that pushes back on one of education's favorite complaints. We keep saying kids lack human skills. Hannah says they have them. We're just not assessing them.

The students who challenged her statistics were thinking critically and demanding evidence. The kid who turned his counseling sessions into a book series pulled other students into the work without anyone asking him to. The students who called the local Humane Society, identified a real need, and built products to meet it? When the grant money ran out, they funded it themselves.

Human skills show up when the conditions are right. Choice, creation, real problems, room to care about something. The question was never whether kids can be resilient, adaptable, or collaborative. It's whether we've built a system that lets them show it.

This one is for anyone who's ever looked at a kid and seen more than the system is measuring.
