In the preview episode titled "Jumping to Conclusions," hosts Payne Lindsey and Maggie Freleng delve into a perplexing case that has baffled the true crime community for over a decade. This episode sets the stage for an in-depth exploration of the mysterious death of Ellen Goldberg, raising questions about the initial conclusions drawn by authorities.
On Wednesday, January 26, 2011, in Philadelphia—a city often referred to as the "City of Brotherly Love"—a significant snowstorm began to blanket the Northeast. Amid the chaos of the impending weather event, Sam Goldberg, 28, returned to his sixth-floor apartment at the Venice Lofts after a workout at the local gym.
At approximately 5:15 PM (00:20), Sam attempted to enter his apartment but discovered the door locked from the inside. With his fiancée, Ellen Goldberg, still inside, Sam's initial attempts to gain entry—knocking and pounding on the door—elicited no response (01:42).
As minutes turned into hours, Sam's frustration escalated. By 1 hour and 42 minutes after leaving the gym, he resorted to using his phone to text Ellen, expressing his distress:
Sam Goldberg: "Hello? Open the door. What are you doing?" (01:42)
His attempts to communicate were met with silence, increasing his agitation:
Sam Goldberg: "I'm getting pissed. Hello? You better have an excuse. What the. Ah, you have no idea." (01:55)
Despite attracting the attention of neighbors due to his persistent pounding, Ellen remained unresponsive, and Sam's worry deepened.
After nearly two agonizing hours without any sign of Ellen, Sam finally forced open the apartment door. What he found was devastating:
Sam Goldberg: "I just walked in my apartment, fiancée's on the floor with blood everywhere. There's a knife taking out of her heart." (02:29)
The scene that awaited Sam inside his apartment became the focal point of much speculation and controversy over the ensuing years.
Authorities swiftly ruled Ellen's death as an obvious suicide. However, many in the community and true crime enthusiasts believe the evidence suggests a different reality. Questions have been raised about the nature of her injuries and the circumstances leading up to that tragic night.
The episode's title, "Jumping to Conclusions," hints at the central theme: the potential misinterpretation of evidence by law enforcement. By examining the timeline, forensic reports, and Sam's account, the hosts aim to uncover whether Ellen's death was indeed a suicide or if foul play was involved.
Payne Lindsey and Maggie Freleng will scrutinize the available evidence, including:
The duo also plans to discuss how media portrayals and community perceptions can influence the investigation's direction. The widespread belief that cases are rarely straightforward underlines the importance of objective analysis in true crime investigations.
