Well, with that we're going to roll into kind of the lightning round of the conversation. Trend or trash Backlinking will have a resurgence with AI search.
C
To be honest, the word resurgence is throwing me off. I don't know if it ever really went, I think back leaking will continue to play an important role, but I think brand mentions will play an even bigger role. I think the technology is getting to a point to where it is better able to parse through information and understand how a brand is being spoken about on which websites, by which audiences and users. And that is going to matter more than the old school. Oh, this was linked to a website. So all that to say I think brand mentions, digital pr, et cetera will still play an important role in the world of AI search.
B
Totally agree. I think it's like, yeah, maybe resurgence isn't the best word choice in there, but I feel like in the last five years it hasn't been a cornerstone in conversations, I think as much. And actually I really like more of the phrasing that you use there of digital primary. Like, I feel like the pendulum swing is like coming back towards that and it's like we're having this, like, I don't know, a little more energy into that side of things and it's less, I don't know, maybe spammy as it's been kind of manipulated a little bit into. So I'm excited to kind of see how that develops. Yeah, but with that, that's going to wrap up this episode of the Voice of Search podcast. In the episode titled "Backlinking will have a resurgence with AI search?", hosted by Tyson Stockton on the Voices of Search podcast, the discussion delves into the evolving landscape of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and content marketing in the context of emerging artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. The conversation primarily revolves around the relevance of backlinking in modern SEO strategies and how AI is reshaping the way search engines interpret and value backlinks versus other forms of digital mentions.
Tyson Stockton initiates the conversation by posing a critical question: "Backlinking will have a resurgence with AI search?" This question serves as a springboard for exploring the current and future significance of backlinking within SEO practices.
Participant C expresses skepticism about the term "resurgence," suggesting that backlinking has never fully diminished in importance but instead is evolving. "I don't know if it ever really went, I think backlinking will continue to play an important role," C states (00:57), emphasizing that while backlinks remain valuable, their role is being complemented and, in some aspects, overtaken by brand mentions.
C further elaborates on the shift towards brand mentions, highlighting that advancements in AI allow search engines to better parse and understand how brands are discussed across various platforms. "I think brand mentions will play an even bigger role," C explains (00:57). This shift underscores the importance of not just obtaining backlinks but also managing a brand's reputation and visibility through digital public relations (PR).
Participant B agrees with C's perspective, acknowledging that while backlinking may not be the "cornerstone" it once was, it retains its significance within a broader SEO strategy. "I really like more of the phrasing that you use there of digital PR," B notes (01:41), indicating a growing recognition of the diverse elements that contribute to effective SEO in the age of AI.
The conversation underscores how AI is transforming SEO by enabling more sophisticated analysis of online content. AI-driven algorithms can assess not just the quantity of backlinks but also the context and quality of brand mentions, leading to a more nuanced understanding of a website's authority and relevance.
C summarizes this evolution by stating, "the technology is getting to a point to where it is better able to parse through information and understand how a brand is being spoken about on which websites, by which audiences and users," (00:57). This ability allows search engines to prioritize meaningful interactions over mere link counts, encouraging marketers to focus on building genuine brand presence and engagement.
Participant C: "I think brand mentions, digital PR, et cetera will still play an important role in the world of AI search." (00:57)
Participant B: "I really like more of the phrasing that you use there of digital PR," (01:41)
The episode reinforces the idea that SEO is not a static field but one that continuously adapts to technological advancements. The integration of AI into search algorithms necessitates a strategic shift from traditional backlink-focused SEO to a more holistic approach that includes brand mentions and digital PR.
Key takeaways include:
Backlinking Remains Relevant: While not the only factor, backlinks continue to contribute to a website's SEO strength. Their importance is maintained, albeit within a broader SEO framework.
Emphasis on Brand Mentions: AI's capability to analyze brand mentions across diverse platforms highlights the growing importance of maintaining a positive and widespread brand presence.
Digital PR as a Critical Component: Engaging in digital PR activities enhances brand visibility and reputation, which are increasingly critical in AI-driven search evaluations.
Quality Over Quantity: The focus is shifting towards the quality and context of backlinks and brand mentions rather than sheer quantity, aligning with AI's ability to discern nuanced content.
Adaptive SEO Strategies: Marketers must adopt flexible SEO strategies that leverage both traditional backlinks and modern brand-centric approaches to stay competitive.
In conclusion, the episode "Backlinking will have a resurgence with AI search?" provides valuable insights into the dynamic interplay between traditional SEO practices and emerging AI-driven trends. By recognizing the enduring value of backlinking while embracing the rising significance of brand mentions and digital PR, marketers can craft more effective and resilient SEO strategies. Tyson Stockton successfully navigates this complex topic, offering listeners a comprehensive understanding of current and future SEO landscapes.
