Next one Trend or Trash? Is optimizing content specifically for AIO a trend or trash?
C
I'm going to say it's a trend, all right. I'm going to say snippets are the new zero click playground. So if you are paying attention at all, and I know that you are because I see you active on LinkedIn, everybody's talking about it. It's like, oh my God, these AI overviews are killing me. And we're not special. I have this is funny. For my May report, I had fewer sessions, but I had an 8% increase in revenue. But in the AI overviews, when I was looking in Semrush, we have, I mean we're killing it in the IO reviews, which means we're offering good informational content. So we're appearing in those. But it is going to be a trend because now we have to figure out how are we going to optimize for that. Because I don't know how recently Google has or that help Google, I assume it's Google for the AI overviews. They started putting links right in those results. It didn't used to have links in those results and now it does. So how to make the content engaging enough so that people get the answer that they want, but at the same time encourage them to click through in those links that are within those AI overviews. So I think that that's a mystery to all of us. That's what I'm going to say. It's trending because like I said earlier, AI is not going away. We just have to learn how to adapt to it. So I'm going to go with it's trending. I'm a big proponent of AI. I'm one of the people who has embraced it. However, I hate those AI overviews. Even as a searcher. Catch 22 yeah, even as a searcher. Not just an SEO. It's like I don't want that. It's like I didn't ask you for that. But then sometimes I do. Like when I'm doing comparisons, it's like because I have this side business and sometimes I want to know where to get the best price product for my for my website and I want to make sure it's American made. And so I'll say I, you know, help me find and or I have these two products, compare them side by side and tell me which one's American made. And it's great for that. But like the weather, I don't need that AI overview. I want to go to the weatherchannel.com because maybe I want to look at what everywhere else in the country is looking like. So It's a catch 22 for sure. I really hate them as an SEO.

Voices of Search Podcast Summary
Episode Title: Is Optimizing Content Specifically for AIO a Trend or Trash?
Release Date: July 30, 2025
Host: Tyson Stockton
Guest: Donna Donahue, Atelier Scientific
In this insightful episode of the Voices of Search podcast, hosted by Tyson Stockton, the discussion centers around a pertinent question in the realm of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and content marketing: Is optimizing content specifically for Artificial Intelligence Overviews (AIO) a trend worth following, or is it a fad that will fade away? Joined by Donna Donahue from Atelier Scientific, the episode delves into the evolving landscape of AI in search and its implications for content creators and marketers.
Donna Donahue initiates the conversation by asserting her stance on the matter. At [00:52], she confidently states, "I'm going to say it's a trend." Donna emphasizes that AI Overviews are not just passing phenomena but are reshaping the way content is optimized and presented to users. She highlights the increasing focus on snippets, describing them as "the new zero click playground" ([01:00]), indicating that these snippets are becoming central battlegrounds for visibility in search results.
Donna shares her own experiences to illustrate the tangible impacts of AIO optimization. She mentions observing an "8% increase in revenue" despite a decrease in sessions ([01:10]). This suggests that while the volume of traffic might fluctuate, the quality and conversion potential of that traffic are improving. Utilizing tools like SEMrush, Donna notes that their performance in AI Overviews is strong, signing off with, "we're killing it in the AI overviews, which means we're offering good informational content" ([01:30]).
Despite the positive outcomes, Donna acknowledges the complexities introduced by AIOs. She shares her concerns about the evolving nature of these overviews, particularly regarding the presence of links within them—a feature that was absent before. "Google started putting links right in those results. It didn't use to have links in those results and now it does" ([02:00]). This shift necessitates a dual strategy: creating content that engages readers sufficiently to provide the answers they seek while also encouraging them to click through to the linked resources within the AI Overviews.
Donna underscores the uncertainty surrounding Google's exact algorithms for AIOs, labeling the optimization process as "a mystery to all of us" ([02:15]). She emphasizes the importance of staying adaptable in the face of these changes, reinforcing her belief that AI's integration into search is enduring: "AI is not going away. We just have to learn how to adapt to it" ([02:30]).
Shifting to a more personal perspective, Donna expresses mixed feelings about AI Overviews both as an SEO professional and as a regular searcher. She articulates a sense of frustration, stating, "I hate those AI overviews. Even as a searcher. Catch 22" ([02:45]). Donna elaborates on scenarios where AI Overviews are beneficial, such as comparing products or seeking specific information like "American made" items for her side business. However, she also highlights the drawbacks when seeking more comprehensive or specific data, preferring sources like theweatherchannel.com for detailed weather information instead of generic AI-generated summaries.
Donna concludes her analysis by reaffirming that optimizing for AIOs is indeed a trend that SEO and content marketers must embrace. She recognizes the dual-edged nature of AI integration—offering new opportunities for visibility and revenue while also presenting challenges in terms of content engagement and user experience. Her balanced perspective underscores the necessity for continuous adaptation and strategic content creation tailored to the evolving dynamics of AI in search.
Tyson Stockton wraps up the episode by expressing gratitude to Donna Donahue for her valuable insights.
