Toss up should we be measuring AI overviews in AI mode or maintaining traditional organic rankings as a set of KPIs for SEOs?
Unknown Speaker 1
Can I say both?
Kevin Indig
Not allowed.
Unknown Speaker 1
It's probably not a toss up. Okay, not a toss up.
Unknown Speaker 2
Okay, cool.
Kevin Indig
That's fine.
Unknown Speaker 1
If I had to choose, I would say probably measuring AI mode and AI overviews. I really think that's where the game is going. And I also like to still look at keyword ranks because it is a directional signal for how visible you might be in any AI surface. So for example, Bing keyword ranks, nobody's tracking those. I think they're now incredibly valuable because ChatGPT grounds their answers on Bing search results and so you know, to some degree they matter still, but not as a goal and much more as like a directional signal.
Kevin Indig
I want to remind listeners you gave some amazing advice earlier about looking at position one and the the visibility or the impressions of position one because position one is such an influence to AI overviews and AI mode. I couldn't agree more with you. I think that's like it's a clear signal that Google wants and is eating up what you're providing and and they're going to use that to train their responses. So it's such a critical component to be measuring this, not only your position one, but then how that influences AI overviews and AI mode.

Voices of Search Podcast: Measuring for AI Overviews vs. Maintaining Traditional Organic Rankings
Episode Title: Measuring for AI Overviews/Mode vs Maintaining Traditional Organic Rankings
Release Date: August 14, 2025
Host: Jordan Cooney
Guest: Kevin Indig
In this episode of the Voices of Search podcast, host Jordan Cooney engages in a thought-provoking discussion with SEO expert Kevin Indig. The primary focus revolves around the evolving landscape of search engine optimization (SEO) in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). The central question posed is whether SEO professionals should prioritize measuring AI overviews (AI mode) or continue to maintain traditional organic rankings as key performance indicators (KPIs).
Kevin Indig kicks off the conversation by presenting the dilemma:
"Toss up should we be measuring AI overviews in AI mode or maintaining traditional organic rankings as a set of KPIs for SEOs?"
[00:43]
The discussion quickly delves into whether it's possible to balance both metrics or if SEO professionals must choose one over the other.
Unknown Speaker 1 suggests a balanced approach:
"If I had to choose, I would say probably measuring AI mode and AI overviews. I really think that's where the game is going. And I also like to still look at keyword ranks because it is a directional signal for how visible you might be in any AI surface."
[01:05]
He emphasizes the importance of keyword rankings as a directional indicator, particularly in the context of platforms like Bing. This is especially relevant as AI models like ChatGPT leverage Bing's search results to ground their answers, making keyword rankings still valuable, albeit not the primary focus.
Kevin Indig underscores the critical role of achieving the top ranking position:
"I think that's like it's a clear signal that Google wants and is eating up what you're providing and they're going to use that to train their responses. So it's such a critical component to be measuring this, not only your position one, but then how that influences AI overviews and AI mode."
[01:39]
He highlights that securing the number one spot not only boosts visibility but also directly influences how AI systems interpret and utilize that content in their overviews and responses. This symbiotic relationship between traditional SEO metrics and AI integrations necessitates a dual focus for SEO strategies.
The conversation leads to strategic insights for SEO professionals navigating this dual measurement landscape:
Prioritize AI Mode Metrics: As AI continues to integrate more deeply with search functionalities, monitoring AI-specific metrics becomes increasingly vital. This includes understanding how AI models use your content in generating overviews and responses.
Maintain Keyword Rankings as Indicators: While AI metrics take precedence, traditional keyword rankings should not be neglected. They serve as foundational indicators of content visibility and potential integration points for AI systems.
Focus on Position One: Achieving and maintaining the top ranking is essential, not just for human searchers but also for AI systems that rely on these rankings to train their responses. Position one acts as a strong signal of content relevance and authority.
In wrapping up the discussion, Kevin Indig reinforces the interconnectedness of traditional SEO metrics and emerging AI-driven metrics. He advocates for a balanced approach where SEO professionals measure both AI overviews and keyword rankings to adapt to the evolving search landscape effectively.
Key Takeaways:
Dual Measurement Approach: SEO strategies should encompass both AI-specific metrics and traditional keyword rankings to stay relevant in the evolving search ecosystem.
Position One as a Critical Indicator: Achieving the top ranking not only enhances visibility but also plays a significant role in how AI systems utilize content.
Adaptability is Crucial: As AI continues to shape search functionalities, SEO professionals must remain flexible and adjust their strategies to incorporate new metrics and insights.
