Bottom line up front, despite Russian claims of taking the city on July 3rd, it’s still heavily contested with Ukrainian forces scattered throughout. It’s not a good situation for Ukraine and continues to get worse by the day but it’s just not accurate to say that Russian forces hold the city. In fact, based on recent examples like Pokrovsk, we should probably assume this urban setting will be fought over for months still to come.
