This one has been plaguing me for a long time, but I only recently realized how much I hate it.

So this is the Apple Weather app. I'm not sure if this is true on other weather apps.

[Marques]

I'll tell you.

[David]

And many people have been like, why do you use the stock Apple weather app? Why don't you use these other ones? Mostly it's because it's included and free. Because I'm a normie, I guess, using this Today Calendar app, like, which would be insane. I do not do that. I'm a Google boy through and through for Calendar. Anyway, the worst part about the Apple weather, apparently, is that it can be sunny almost all day long. It will rain for like one hour at one in the morning. And if you are zoomed out on the weather, it says 90% chance of thunderstorms all day.

[Marques]

Time for the day is rain.

[David]

Yeah, like, it says tomorrow, 90% chance of thunderstorm. And then you actually tap into the day and it's like, oh, from like 1:00am to 2:00am it's raining, and then all day it's sunny.

[Marques]

Yeah, that is. That should be a setting that you can adjust.

[David]

It's not.

[Marques]

So I agree with you. That is kind of annoying. I've gotten so used to seeing the rain logo and then going, oh, it's going to rain at some point during those 24 hours. And then I click in to see when during the 24 hours.

[David]

It's usually at like one in the

[Marques]

morning, but yeah, it is. That is a very good point.

[Andrew]

Even a 1pm shower, if it's only for an hour, you don't shower before bed.

[Marques]

Well, See, that's where I think it should be customizable because I think people want to know if at some point during the day it will rain and then if it is show the. Especially if it's like during the commute or during lunch or when I'm going to be outside, I want to know if it's going to rain when I'm awake for it.

[David]

Instead of a single icon, they could put a sun and a rain icon and just put percentages next to it. What percentage of the day is it sunny? What percentage of the day is it?

[Marques]

Well, that's what you see when you click in.

[David]

When you click in. But then you have to click in. And this overview, like you should just know. It says freaking thunderstorms, but it was sunny all day.

[Marques]

Okay, okay.

[Andrew]

So the.

So the Apple weather app has a terrible layout.

[David]

Yeah.

I suggest almost any other weather app for like.

[Andrew]

I think most weather apps do that though. If like there is rain at some point in the 24 hour day, it just shows a rain.

It shows rain.

[Andrew]

And that's bad.

[David]

That's just bad.

But there should be a setting of like, will it rain during my commute or during my waking day?

[Andrew]

Or waking day? I think like 9 to 8pm yeah. If there's rain in there, you can put rain. If there's no rain in that chill.

[David]

Yeah, yeah, that's valid. It's just. Yeah. I don't know. It just feels it. It makes this feel practically pointless because unless it's. It shows a sun icon which basically means it's sun all day no matter what.

[Andrew]

Wait, and what? I didn't notice you. You were physically saying today where 1am has happened already.

[David]

Yeah.

[Andrew]

And it still says rain.

[David]

Still says thunderstorms.

[Andrew]

Yeah. That's crazy. It's past like we are past that. At least update when we're past it.

[Marques]

Yeah, yeah.

[Andrew]

I don't know.

Dynamic to the point where maybe like within a few hours of the future.

Yeah.

[Andrew]

And then changes. So if you check your weather in the morning and it says sunny, but then when you check again at like 1pm if it's raining later, then maybe it can switch to rain.

And I use the Nothing weather app because it has a widget that shows you like the whole day.

[David]

Do they have that for the iPhone?

[Adam]

This is on iPhone.

Oh, interesting.

Oh, that's the Not Boring weather app.

I think what we're discovering is why, like, weather apps are the peak of data organization and display.

Like, there is so much that people want to know or don't want to know or want preferences on showing in like the weather display. And that's why weather apps are crazy.

[David]

Yeah. So what do you recommend for the iPhone for weather app?

[Marques]

So my personal favorite is Carrot still Carrot Weather.

[Adam]

Okay.

[Marques]

It's essentially ripped a layout from Dark sky, which we've heard about or talked about Dark sky many times.

[David]

Yeah.

[Marques]

So it has the same layout as Dark sky and then it has a really good radar implementation. So if you ever want to see the overhead of like where the storms are or where they're tracked, hacking during the day, that's really useful. And then like, so when you pull up. We were going way too into that.

[Andrew]

I'll give you my layman's term of what the ideal situation is. You have three weather apps and you either use one until it's wrong and then switch to another one till that's wrong, or just look at all three of them until you find the thing you want to believe happens that day. Agree with that one. And then later when it rains, be like, yeah, really didn't think it was gonna rain today. And then just be sad about it.

[David]

I should just have a full page of weather app widgets and then I can just look at.

[Marques]

They all say different things.

[David]

They all say different things. And I look at five and I take an average.

[Marques]

So this is Dark Sky's copy layout. See how that's a light blue? That's like a light percentage chance. So you kind of at a glance, you know, oh, at 4pm it might storm.

[David]

What about sun?

[Marques]

Then it'll be yellow. These will not be gray. So this is like cloudy gray all day. But if it's a sunny day like this, see how it's clear up there? That's clear.

[Andrew]

Why would it be yellow?

[Marques]

So that's.

It's just a good glanceable, you know,

you should just do what I do and walk in in the morning and ask Marques.

All right. We've been talking about a lot about Fitbit stuff. We've been talking a lot about Whoop stuff. Andrew, certified Whoop hater. I stopped using my Whoop and I'm using the Fitbit Air again.

So we represent the entire spectrum here.

Yeah, that's true. And now. And now we finally got the product we've been thinking was probably going to happen eventually. And it happened eventually. This is the Garmin Screenless Activity Tracker. Andrew's very excited about this because Andrew has used garments for years, so.

[Marques]

Yeah, well, we're looking forward to it.

[Andrew]

I was looking forward to seeing what it was.

[Marques]

Oh, yeah. Well, let's start with what it is.

[Andrew]

The Garmin circa C I R, Q A.

[David]

Why do they do that? Just stop with the cues, I guess.

[Andrew]

Kind of has done some. The Garmin Phoenix was FE n I X.

[Marques]

It is. But not what you would normally assume. Phoenix.

They've all had a little. Okay. Anyways. Yeah, it's. This is one of those things where I saw the picture and the colors of the bands looked great.

The materials looked really solid. It has a button on the side which I was like, okay, I like potential customizable button. And then the more I read about it, the more.

[David]

Button's cool.

[Andrew]

Sad. I got.

[Marques]

Yeah. So on the surface, it's roughly the same size and shape as you're expecting. It's kind of similar to the Whoop, maybe a little bit thinner. It's narrower than the Fitbit, but, you know, it's a screenless fitness strategy.

[David]

It's wider than the.

Wider than the Fitbit.

[Andrew]

Wider than Fitbit. Probably about as wide as Whoop. Potentially a little shorter in terms of height off of your wrist than the

Whoop, which is nice.

Does Fit had like a little unboxing that showed both of them. It does fit. And DC Rainmaker are probably going to have 400 videos on this and I will watch all of them because they are my go to Whoop activity tracker. Whatever.

[Marques]

They compare all of them.

[Andrew]

They compare them all so much.

[Marques]

The thing that's also great about this one is it's no subscription needed. It's $200 yes. For just buying it outright and using it forever.

[David]

That's pretty nice.

[Andrew]

Always a good thing. There are. I believe it's $6 a month for Garmin. What's it called? Garmin Connect Plus. I think it is. And there are some features in there. A lot of them are workouts and workout plans and coaching and stuff. There is one thing that I found out later which is live heart rate zones and some. There's some live graphs, but most importantly live heart rate zones on your phone. Live app that I think is Connect plus only, which is. That's so easy. It's on all. All of your watches already. That doesn't require the subscription for that and plays it on the watch. Back off Garmin. Put that on the free mode. Let the AI coaching and whatever be the thing you pay extra for. I think that's totally fair. But yeah. $299, no subscription fee. I found the bands to be kind of expensive. They're $49 for an extra band or $60 for the arm band. Fitbit has really reasonable accessory prices. They're like 35 bucks for some of them. They're definitely. They're Velcro, a little bit of stretch. I think the colors look really good. There's like black, a tan, kind of a brownish maroony color and then a blue. Definitely chunkier. I was confused by 10 day battery life that seems short in my eyes considering I have the 48 millimeter AMOLED Fenix 8 Pro or whatever it is. And that can get like 14 days of battery life with that huge AMOLED screen with raised to wake on. And this only gets 10. Obviously it's bigger, but this is doing so much less. It doesn't have a screen, I feel like. So my thought was cool. It's Garmin, they love gps. Maybe this is the first screenless activity tracker with GPS connection.

[Adam]

Which would have been so Garmin. And it's not. It's GPS connect only, which is through your phone.

[Marques]

Right.

[Andrew]

Which I think is such a big miss. I hate to say this, but I almost feel like that's dead on arrival for this.

[Marques]

Yeah. I would think the Garmin one.

[Andrew]

Yes.

[Marques]

People are going to be looking to the Garmin one for the things that they've looked to Garmin for in the past, which is a lot of outdoor workouts which like biking and hiking and running. That's like a heavy GPS activity. If I want to take this out and not bring my phone with me, I would like it to have gps. GPS is also a very Big power draw. And I wonder if this is just a focus on, like, we have to make it so thin and light and small that it's got a tiny battery. And GPS would draw too much battery.

[David]

But it's like not. It's kind of big.

[Andrew]

It is kind of chunky.

[Marques]

Yeah, but it's the same. I mean, think about like the Whoop and the Fitbit Air that also don't have gps.

[Andrew]

Yeah, but Whoop's a scam.

[Marques]

So I'm just saying, form factor wise, if you add GPS to that small thing.

[David]

Yeah, but doesn't cruise in through battery. Doesn't the watch have like standalone gps?

[Andrew]

Yeah, like, yeah, but the watch has

[Marques]

a much larger physical. I know it's like a small thing on your wrist still, but milliamp hour wise, it's a much bigger battery because you're used to having a metal heavier thing on your wrist.

[Adam]

And when you're tracking workouts, it goes faster because of all the higher sampling. So like, if I start a weekend with two practices at 25% battery, it's nearly dead by the end in two days. Whoa, the Fitbit? Yeah. No, the Whoop.

Yeah. And the Fitbit too. I was getting like seven to eight days of battery. So when I saw 10 days, I was like, yeah, that's probably about right. But the others will rate it for like 14. So this seems like it's maybe not gonna make it to seven for me.

We'll have to see. So it does, it does kind of the typical stats. You can track activity, tracking heart rate, sleep, HRV calories. It has body battery slash training readiness. That's something Garmin's had for a long time. Um, there are, there's a sleep coach included in the free metrics and all general sleep tracking this is something Sleep coach is funny. I think it's.

Well, I think it's more like how to sleep better.

I think it's more along the lines of like you had a really training fulfilled day and maybe didn't get as much sleep. You should try and get an extra hours. That's all it is. It's saying like, bro, take a nap or bro, like chill out today, go to sleep a little earlier. There is vibrations for alarms. There's no altimeters for floors climbs.

Is there vibration for notifications?

[Marques]

No, just the alarm.

There's got to be someone who can figure out the like if this, then that. And just make every time I get a text notification in it just like quickly sets an alarm for 30 seconds later.

And then yeah, I know someone who can do that. It's my friend Claude.

And potentially really dangerous. What else was I going to say? The button on the side can help you with quick launching different activities. It does have auto tracking activities and most of the stuff you do through the same Garmin Connect app that you're used to. But the button can then be helpful. I haven't seen exactly how it's used, but for launching some of those activities that maybe you don't think it's going to pick up automatically.

I feel like the usefulness of that is limited because I need my phone on me anyway.

Like if I'm going to go on a run and I quick start a run, it doesn't track gps, so I need my phone. I'm going to have my phone on me anyway. I'll just take out my phone and start a run.

I'm sure with how many different activities there. I'm sure there's some that that would be beneficial. I remember like when we used to play or when I used to play ultimate wearing my whoop, I would be like, we would play like an indoor league and I would go out and start running and be like, I didn't start it on my phone but my phone would be in my bag where I like changed everything. Not on the sidelines. So yeah, then I could just press it and be like it's starting an activity. I'll go in and call it ultimate later.

Yeah, it is nice to have a quick start button. That's a nice feature for sure.

Or if climbing, you leave your phone in your bag all the time, stuff like that. I could see that being beneficial. I mean, hopefully there's some other things you can do with a button. I think a button I was just

gonna say having one button unlocks so much. That's, like, one of the main reasons why I like Garmin when exercising in general is because touchscreens are so annoying when you're sweaty and it's hot out and you're like, a couple miles into a run. Like, just pressing a button is so much easier.

Yeah. Their absolute cheapest watches are about 250. They do have a, like, little screen to smart band. The Vivo Smart 5. Yeah. Like an old Fitbit that's 150. So I guess that's kind of the best.

Yeah, this is. I was trying to figure out who I think this is best for, because in so many ways, it's cheaper than Whoop because Whoop is infinite 200. So twice the price of Fitbit air. It's also twice the thickness of Fitbit air, which I really think.

Is why the Fitbit air is so good. Because of how it's crazy chill. It is like. It just is so minimal. It feels ideal. When you maybe want to wear another watch, having a much smaller band on your other, the smaller seems better.

Well, that is kind of what I was. I was gonna say this is for people who do maybe really, like, triathlons or marathons or things where the watch telling them the information. So someone who already has a Garmin watch but doesn't want to wear it all of the time, so then all of their information's in the same app and coexist with each other, but they don't want to wear the. The giant 50 millimeter AMOLED watch that just is, like, pure statistics on it all the time because it doesn't look nice at work, but they still want to, you know, typical screenless activity. Whoop user. I can't even take a shower without tracking my heart rate in the middle of it. So, like, being able to constantly track.

Literally every time I take my whoop off in the shower, I'd be like, why are you taking it off? You can shower with this on. You can just put the battery on. It's waterproof.

And when he tweeted it out, he said that they made it because they wanted to reduce dependency on Slack. What makes it interesting is that it's open sourced. It does not completely run on his like open protocol, which is Nostr, but every action that you take within it is like, is on the Nostr chain. So everything's like verified over nostr. It's like a peer to peer thing when you add people to it. It's basically like a locally run Slack. Everything is like stored both locally and put on the Nostr chain. And then for some reason they have like a little mini GitHub inside of it too so that you can like vibe code with your friends, which is interesting.

It's very much like the Bit chat one that he released like a year or two ago that David and I were using on the plane. And you made it in front of us.

That's barely a smartphone.

here, could I. Yeah, the light. The minimalist community is gonna hate me for saying this, but could you compare these to like a crash diet where it's not sustainable? So you. Yeah, buy one. And then you're like, I can do it. And then you just, I can do it. I can curse through it. You know, you're totally crashing, crashing. And then you go, I can't do this anymore. And then you just absolutely binge doom scrolling and like your phone and distractions after that.

Like, okay, I have.

I must have a very different view on the use of this phone.

Okay. Outside of the 299 price tag, you could pay, what is it? $39 a month. $49 a month to have it be on a, like, plan with 1 gigabyte of data and unlimited call and text, whatever. I think this is your personal phone. And then you make your smartphone your work phone. So, like, you get home and you put one phone with Slack and email and everything. You put that in your backpack for the next day. You walk around with this phone.

[David]

Yeah.

[Adam]

On the weekends you just leave your phone at home. It's like a laptop. You just Leave it at home because you don't. You're not doing any work and then you have a $39 phone that you're just walking around with in case someone needs to contact you.

[Brandon]

That's right.

We've talked about this with like clicks and stuff like that. But it just feels also there's just. I love how it's like we can be distracted at work. That's cool.

[Brandon]

Well, I actually do need to post to social for work, but more so just the tools themselves are not available on this phone.

You don't get slack on this phone so you can't do it for work.

I think that that's nice if you have that nice delineation where the only thing you need your personal phone for is for people to contact you and then the rest of the stuff you only need at work. But the once in a while you need a Venmo someone or the once in a while you need to Uber somewhere or you need to do some quick, you know, Apple pay or like pay for something on your. Like once in a while that little. Those annoyances are gonna add up. Especially with a phone like this where you can't use a QWERTY keyboard. And I feel like after a while I'm just gonna get annoyed. And I think most people who use this are reviewers giving it a shot and then being like, yeah, it's not for me.

[Adam]

I don't know, man.

[David]

I don't know if he still has it. He's just using a. Yeah, when he came he was using a dumb phone.

I would say use a Nokia, you'd spend a tenth of the money. It's probably a better deal.

Does the Moto G power have the little flip phone charm ring thing that you can put charms on your phone?

[Marques]

No, it does not.

I don't know. That charm feels pretty destructive.

All right, welcome back. We gotta talk about Samsung unpacked. That was this week. It's actually. It's Wednesday. We're recording it literally right after watching that hour and a half of something cringe. Yeah, a lot of vertical AI generated ads in that.

[Andrew]

That was so weird.

Keynote for some reason.

[Marques]

Kind of strange. But they did unveil two watches, three phones and some glasses. So we can talk about all of that. Like I said, a lot of gadgets.

[David]

Yeah.

[Marques]

Let's start real quick. With the, I think the simplest stuff.

[David]

Yeah.

[Marques]

There's two new watches.

[David]

Okay.

[Marques]

There's a Galaxy Watch 9 and a Galaxy Watch Ultra 2. They get updated specs. There's a 5000 Nit display on the Ultra 2. They're like generally better overall and they're also still I think 350 or 360. 379 and 6699.

[David]

Yeah.

[Marques]

So that's great. There's also a new flip. The new Flip 8 is slightly thinner. It's got a slightly brighter screen. A little bit more functionality on the COVID screen.

[Andrew]

And it is still $1,000 as the new titanium.

[Marques]

Titanium, whatever. Yeah.

[David]

So the glass up the price by $100.

[Andrew]

Yeah.

[Marques]

Oh, it's 1100, right?

[David]

Yeah, yeah.

It also is back to a Snapdragon chip after last year being exynos only.

[Marques]

Yeah, that's the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. So that's good. And then we got two new big folds and what they did was kind of interesting. They have a new fold 8 as you're picturing it a candy bar style. Then they just added the word ultra to the end of the name and updated the specs and the titanium flex hinge and everything. And this is the new big fold is what I'm calling it Snapdragon Elite Gen 5, 5000 milliamp hour battery. Slightly less hinge or slightly less crease. Not zero crease, but slightly less crease.

[David]

Slightly less.

[Marques]

There's an anti reflective coating on the inside screen.

[Andrew]

Oh, oh wait, no, I'm sorry. That's the new one.

[Adam]

Yeah.

[Marques]

It's $2,100 and it is starting at 256 gigs. So it's 100 bucks more than last year. And then they introduced a new fold 8 that is underneath that. So it is taking the name of the previous phone, but it is now this like short, wide, passport shaped squat one. I'm holding it right here for video users so you can see what I'm talking about. This is the fold eight. And okay, this one is interesting to actually talk about. I really like this one.

[David]

Yeah.

[Marques]

And I was, I was curious to see if other people who got their hands on it liked it as much as I do as well. There's a couple reasons why I really like it.

[Andrew]

Adam is chomping at the bit.

[Marques]

Adam really likes it. Adam really wants to use it.

[David]

I like it a lot.

[Marques]

So here's a couple interesting things about this one. It is smaller, of course, right? It is a small.

[David]

What is it?

[Marques]

A would you say five and a half inch outside.

[David]

It's five and a half inch on the outside. Yeah.

[Marques]

And it's a like 16 by 11 or 16 by 10 aspect ratio on the outside. So it's this little not quite square, but it's kind of squarish. Display right rectangle. Then when you Open becomes a 7.6-inch 4 by 3 display.

[David]

4 by 3, baby.

[Marques]

4 by 3 is nice. That's a nice aspect ratio for reading when it's vertical for, you know, media is okay on it but for looking at your pictures and stuff it's nice.

[David]

Medium format camera sensors are four by three.

[Marques]

A lot of photos you take are four by three. And then it's really thin and light. This is the other thing that I found interesting about it. It's 201 grams. That's only like 8 more grams than a regular S26 Plus. So it feels like the same weight as a regular slab phone, but it is a totally different shape.

[David]

I guarantee you. Adam's on the pre order page right now.

[Andrew]

He's opened it and closed it like

four times this morning on the checkout cart.

[Adam]

I have like six tabs open. I'm trying to.

[Marques]

It's got dual cameras on the back so only two. It's a 50 megapixel primary instead of the 200 and a 50 megapixel ultra wide. And it's a 4800 milliamp hour battery.

[Andrew]

So it's just.

[Marques]

It's a little bit less phone than the Ultra. Yeah, the Ultra didn't like get any new functionality to deserve the Ultra name.

[Andrew]

What do you mean? It got the Ultra camera.

[Marques]

It had that camera last year.

[Andrew]

I know.

[Marques]

So it's just like whatever. They just decided to add the name Ultra and it's more of a positioning thing to like slot this in underneath.

[David]

Yeah.

[Marques]

We all think Apple is also going to make a passport shaped fold later this year. So maybe that was a little clever positioning on their part. But yeah, I really like this size.

[Andrew]

Wait, before we get into that.

[Marques]

Yeah.

[Andrew]

Can we talk about how stupid the Ultra naming? Like normally when we get a Pro or Ultra or something, it's because we get something.

[Marques]

Yeah.

[Andrew]

This is just naming it so it can slide something underneath it.

[David]

Yeah.

[Andrew]

That sucks.

[Marques]

Yep.

[Andrew]

Yeah, that's really annoying.

[David]

Just called it like the Fold plus.

[Marques]

I think the Fold W wide or like. Yeah, fold wide.

[David]

Yeah.

[Marques]

Remember when the. The edge came out, this like super thin phone that made sense because it was just like a. And you add that to the end of the name to Signify that it's a certain type of phone. This could be the fold wide or the fold edge or something.

[David]

And they are kind of putting themselves in a corner because if you remember correctly, Google originally made a short wide foldable as their first foldable as well. Well, and then they eventually just gave in to the rest of the market and they made a tall one again. And if Apple maybe starts with the passport style but then decides later that they want to go to the tall one, then Samsung's kind of stuck with the Ultra and the Normal.

[Marques]

Yeah, which is fine. They're a company that seems perfectly content to make a thousand different phones.

[David]

That's true.

[Marques]

But yeah, for now. This is the one that takes the mantle of just. This is the Fold 8 by name. Yeah. Now it's $1,900. That's the biggest beef that I have with it personally.

[David]

And starts at 256 gigs of storage.

[Marques]

That is also true.

[David]

Yeah.

[Marques]

But everything else about holding it and using it is I think surprisingly nice. Again, less crease on the inside. So if you look at the hands on video that we published on Wednesday, you'll see that there's less crease. It's not zero crease, but it is noticeably nicer. It's a brighter inside screen. This is 3,000 nits instead of wow. Instead of 5,000.

[Adam]

I didn't drop it.

[Marques]

I didn't drop it.

[David]

You almost dropped it.

[Marques]

It's got almost even bezels all the way around on the front instead of having kind of like an extra bezel on the side. Yeah, it's just nice. It's nice to hold.

[David]

So there's a few pretty major quality of life improvements that they added to both this one and the Ultra one is the Flex titanium display, which is what gets rid of that crease. It also makes the display components a little bit thicker, thinner. We talked about that before. It uses a titanium alloy underneath the OLED panel and then a titanium plate that has tighter bonding. All that really means is that the screen can be thinner so they can shave off some millimeters. It also uses less power because there's less layers of display so they don't have to, it doesn't get diffused as much. Other major changes are though they charge at 45 watts now because this is the first time Samsung has finally, finally started doing silicon carbon. However, in our briefing everyone was like, so it's silicon carbon, right? And Samsung was like, we are using, we are beginning to use silicon in our batteries. And everyone's like, so it's silicon carbon. They were like, we're experimenting with using a bit of silicon.

[Marques]

It's almost like they didn't want us to say it or. Or think about it as a silicon carbon battery.

[David]

Yeah.

[Marques]

Like it's still a lithium ion battery.

[Andrew]

We should title this podcast episode Samsung switches to silicon carbon.

[Marques]

That's so silly. It's strange. It's like, yeah, look, they get some benefit out of it. They get higher density. So they get a 5000 milliamp hour battery on the big fold and 4800

[David]

on this one, which is pretty awesome for that one. I feel like this one is gonna be the battery king. Cause it's like way less screen, less outside screen.

[Marques]

4800. That's pretty nice. It also is the first time they've bumped up charging speed.

[David]

Yeah.

[Marques]

So 45 watt charging and 20 watt wireless charging. Yeah. So they're getting some of the benefits of what we've seen from all these silicon carbon batteries. But it's not like I'm holding in my other hand for audio listeners, the OnePlus 15, which is a 7,000 milliamp hour battery with like 90 watt charging.

[David]

It's not full rip, rip, rip.

[Marques]

And so it's like these other companies are using way more silicon in the anode from my understanding, and they're being much more aggressive with it. But potentially, as we saw in our video, also dealing with more risks, potential swelling, other things that could go wrong in the long term future. We don't know. Samsung, extremely conservative in that department, but they're using a little bit more silicon for a reason and delivering respectable battery.

[David]

We think Samsung just has PTSD because the Note 7 kept exploding and because all Samsung phones, if you don't charge them over a certain period of time, the batteries just pop out the back.

[Andrew]

Yeah, they clearly have the worst battery.

[David]

Every Samsung phone, I swear, it's like only. Yeah. Anyway, yeah, it's not only Samsung phones, but it's. It's every Samsung one.

[Marques]

So we'll see how that. We'll see how it ages in the.

[David]

What is it?

[Andrew]

It's not every phone that swells is a Samsung, but every Samsung phone swells. Exactly.

[David]

Yeah, exactly. Yeah. So no QI2 because they didn't want to put the magnets in the back because they needed to keep it thin. They say, however, QI2 ready, baby.

[Andrew]

Yep.

[David]

Which, if you remember, means that I

[Adam]

hate this so much.

[David]

There will be magnetic cases that allow for QI2 compatibility.

[Adam]

Or you just need to put a sticker on the back like a Pleb.

[David]

Yeah, like a Pleb.

[Marques]

Just like the OnePlus. Just like every other phone.

So there are a few kind of interesting updates to the software on the Ultra and I think on this one as well, there's that Gemini Automated Tasks thing that they introduced last year, where Gemini can basically just like order doordash for you and stuff like that. And on the Pixel, when they were having it on the Pixel last year, you can just see it tapping all the buttons for you. On this one, it will do that, but it'll do it in a small window so you can see it happening. But you can do other stuff while it's doing that, which is nice, I suppose.

[Andrew]

Picture in picture. Picture automation.

[David]

Yeah. There's also a new Now Nudge feature on the Flip where if you don't know Now Nudge was. Which I don't blame.

[Andrew]

I think it's on all.

[David]

It's on all of them. But the Flip. Flip is the one where it's like the most prominent. It's this little pill that'll kind of come in when it thinks that you can do something interesting. So, for example, on these phones, when someone texts you and say, it says. And you have it open, someone texts you and say, what's your calendar like next week? What does your calendar look like next week? A little thing will like float in from the side and if you tap it, it'll open your calendar and split screen so you just like quickly see. And I think that's kind of cool.

[Andrew]

Magic cube, but outside of. And not only in messages. Right. Like, it's a little more inside the software.

[Adam]

Yeah.

[David]

And on the flip, they now have these like generative UI Now Nudge cards, which is interesting for now brief and stuff like that, where you can say to it like, I want to know what the pollen levels are like every morning. And then it'll create. It'll like generate a UI for a little card that every morning will tell you what the pollen levels are going to be like. How well this works. I don't know. It seemed like it was pretty on the rails. They only had like three categories for it. They had weather videos, which I think is just like YouTube video updates.

[Marques]

Nice.

[David]

And what was the last one like? Oh, health, health. So I'm assuming it'll like, you can say, tell me what my average heart rate was every morning or something like that, or how did I sleep, Something like that.

[Andrew]

You need one that's like, tell me if it's going to rain for only more Than two hours.

[David]

Right.

[Andrew]

And in the future, not in honestly

[David]

may try that on the flip. May try that on the flip just to see if it works. Yeah. Google famously likes to announce things at Samsung events and they liked. They announced quite a few things at this event too.

[Andrew]

Yeah. I feel like we see Rick Osterloh at events for other companies more than Google company for sure.

[David]

I mean at the Pixel event last year, they did all of the AI testing on an S25 Ultra or whatever. Right. So because it wasn't working on the Pixel, which is very ironic, we did

[Andrew]

have one other really big announcement.

[Marques]

What is that?

[Andrew]

Samsung Galaxy Card.

[David]

Oh yeah, we got to talk about that.

[Andrew]

I don't really need to talk about it. But it's there to talk about it.

[David]

They made a credit card.

[Andrew]

They made a credit card just like the Apple card.

Yeah.

Seems like slightly better cash cash rewards,

couple extra percent that it has Stablecoin now.

Oh yes, it's your wallet for all the things I am wondering.

It does say 5% cash rewards on eligible purchases made directly with Samsung. But if you really Samsung your life, think about how much more there is than Apple. Like refrigerator, washer, dryer, like Samsung can make your whole house essentially for sure. And if you get 5% cash back on all of that. Probably can't, but if you're building or

[David]

buying a house and you plan on buying all Samsung appliances, then I guess you could get the card, get yourself a Galaxy card.

[Adam]

Yeah, I didn't think about that. That's actually a good point.

[Marques]

Yeah, it also, I think you're building a studio.

[Andrew]

I think one of the main things here is it's 3% cash rewards on purchases made on Samsung Wallet. So I think it, it might be a way to be like we want people using Samsung Wallet more because that's

[David]

like 1% better than most cars anyway. We're not a. We're not a finance podcast. This is not financial advice yet. The last thing we have to talk about, specifically that we didn't ex really see coming because they didn't show this at our briefings, is that of course they used Samsung Impact as an opportunity to actually show off the Gemini glasses with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. They do actually look pretty good, I will have to say.

[Andrew]

And by show off you mean they showed them and then turned off the screen before showing any actual specs or information about.

[David]

Once again, I feel like they announced that these like three years ago and they announced this integration or this partnership with Warby Parker. And dental monster. And then they just like, won't let you see how they work.

[Adam]

Or did show something that had Ellis and I kind of, like, curious. But they didn't say anything about it, which is that it looked like there's a switch on the glasses.

[David]

Yeah, there's a little switch that would

[Adam]

be useful to like, it like turn off the camera or turn on.

[David]

That's probably just to turn the glasses on and off. But if it's to. If it's literally a camera power switch, that would be amazing.

[Andrew]

Or a physical slide like that would solve the majority of the issues of, like allowing these into places if they're your regular glasses is I have to see you turn the physical slide on.

[Adam]

And I looked at each other. Like a switch, you say?

[David]

Yeah. So they showed them off at the event to reporters that were there, but they wouldn't let them put them on, which is a giant red flag, Huge

[Marques]

rippling in the wind, massive red flag.

[David]

And by the way, these don't have a screen, so they couldn't even put them on. Like, they didn't even say, like, you can't turn them on. They said you can't put them on your face, which is crazy. So I don't know.

It's a wearable, but just don't wear it yet.

[David]

Right. They said we'll know more in the fall, but I feel like we've been waiting over and over and over again for actual details about these.

[Andrew]

But here we are.

They're competing for the most re. Announced product in. In history.

With the Tesla Roadster and Apple Intelligence.

I thought that was at IO when they got on stage and they, like, they had a lot like Giannis was. They did some demo on IO where they went on stage and the camera is on. And I think it was a meeting, but if not, then maybe it's a new thing where, like, you can be in a Google.

Like you can be in a Google meeting with your glasses and just your glasses. So your phone's in your pocket, it's joined, and they see what you see.

I don't know. I wasn't pumped by it, but it just seemed like the only new thing. But I interpreted as you have a meeting up on your computer and you can toggle the glasses as a webcam

like in a, in a meet. I almost never. I would always want it facing my face. I feel like usually but I guess mountain almost. Yeah, I guess I was thinking of it as phone. Like I'd rather just switch the camera around on my phone then. You don't think they're preparing. Hey David, check this out. How'd that look?

You don't think they're preparing for the future when AI tokens are too expensive? Like I feel like when these smart glasses first happening the AI glasses the demo we'd always get is like oh my wife needs me to get me. I need to get a zucchini for I don't know, a zucchini. Now you can just Google Meet your wife directly and be like is this a zucchini?

[David]

And yeah, instead of having Gemini just looking at it and saying what is this? Is this a zucchini?

[Andrew]

Take that one step further. When Claire's just in the living room and I'm in the pantry, I'm like I swore we had those chickpeas. And she's like, she's like they're right there. The good you're looking at, they're looking directly at.

Which considering I don't want to, you know, I don't want to be too friendly but considering Ramageddon I was expecting and them like renaming it to the Ultra, I was expecting it to be like at least 150 or 200 more expensive. You do still get the same storage. And to be honest, for an ultra phone foldable costing 2,100 bucks, 256 is not a lot of storage and that kind of sucks. But you know, I did expect it to be worse. That's all I have to say.

I wonder if they can get that much worse when you're already at such a high price point.

I was gonna say my two thoughts that I keep having on this small fold the fold eight one is it does feel like this is For a more casual user. Like, they kept talking about the Fold 8 Ultra as the productivity phone. This is two phones next to each other. Basically when you open it up and have two apps side by side, do all this productivity stuff. It's got the most battery, triple cameras, all this stuff. Okay, great. This phone is a little more casual than that. It's still more of a phone than a regular phone, but it's a little more media, a little more like looking at your photos, photo editing if you want a little bit less of like the multitasking productivity.

It was weird how they positioned it. Something like it's the size for the everyday person. I was like, you just did the $2,100 and that's not. I guess.

Yeah, I guess I'm thinking of the Fold 8 Ultra as like the power user enthusiast. I'm gonna spend $2,000 on this phone and like use the crap out of it and like multitask, email, all this stuff on my phone.

And I think it's gonna be even shorter and even wider, so like more squat. And then you open it and it becomes like 60 by 9. I think that's what we've seen in these. These like clay models and stuff like

that wasn't the whole leak that this one, the reason Samsung did this one was because it's like the same screen, basically.

It doesn't seem like it is. I mean, they're definitely mimicking the passport thing again because we're going back to that. And, you know, maybe this is a better time for that. Like the tech is better for the passport thing. This is now we have silicon carbon. The phones are thinner. They're more daily able at this size. So instead of having crappy batteries, it's like, yeah, the passport thing actually works again. But I do think the Apple one is a little bit of a different shape again than this one.

Mac Rumors is saying it's 5.5 on the outside and 7.8 on the inside,

Welcome back. This is off the top of the dome, but I wanted to try to think of a way to explain something I saw on my feed. In tech terms, it's an athletic feat. It's the new mile world record. I don't know if you guys saw this in London, I think about a week ago. So I want to get the time right.

3 minutes 42.66 seconds.

Oh, you googled it already. Okay, so Josh Kerr ran the mile in 3 minutes 42.66 seconds according to AI overview. And that is correct. That's a tenth off of the previous mile world record, which was set in 1999 by Jicamal Garouge from Morocco. That, by the way, is one of the greatest races ever run. Both first place and second place both went under the previous world record mile. Dang. And then this guy Josh goes out and he's been saying he's going to break the world record for weeks and weeks and he finally gets to it. He gets on that stage, the crowd's on their feet the whole time. And he goes out with these pacesetters and he runs essentially like a 16th, a 13 and a half second hundred meter dash 16 times in a row. It's, it's. There's no way to like contextualize how fast this mile is other than to just go try to do it yourself and realize it's really.

It's crazy. Um, anyway, he breaks the world record for the mile and I'm trying to think of a way to explain it in tech terms. Breaking a 26 year old world record and saying you were going to do it.

So the fact that Jicamal Garrouge broke this world record in 1999, there's been a ton of advancements in sports since then. The shoes, the training, the medicine, the recovery, the everything. And it still took 26, 27 more years of that for someone to break his record. Yeah. Which makes it seem like it was pretty sick when it happened.

Can I ask a question that we may or may not keep in the pod? Because you might not know.

Do you know if there were people running in front of him, like, as a vanguard to break for which. For the new one, or was it just like.

Yeah. So it's outdoor track. It's a famously fast track. The first lap he has two pacesetters. The next lap he has one pacesetter. And then he runs the last lap and a half alone in the lead. And it's not so much breaking the air, but it's like this track has lights alongside the bottom of the track to identify exactly where you have to be at what speed, where you need to be to break the world record. So the old world records in the 90s was just like, this guy ran as fast as he could and he passed the line and then discovered that it was a world record where these guys are like, all right, this is the record I'm gonna break and I'm gonna train to do exactly that. I'm gonna run exactly this pace. I'm gonna have pacesetters who are setting it up for me to follow them, and then they're gonna leave. And then I'm gonna run the last lap and a half as hard as I can.

Well, there's a couple tech news stories I wanted to bring up. One Peak Design just launched a really cool, what they call field bracket. It's part L bracket, part like modular cage for your. For your camera. And it also hides a tracker tag in the bottom of the cage, which is really cool. So we don't know what an L bracket is for cameras. It's like a piece of metal that slaps onto the bottom inside of your camera that allows you to put your camera on a tripod but in a vertical orientation so they can shoot in portrait orientation. Also there's an attachment called a cheese plate, which is just basically like a bunch of holes that'll slap onto it, which.

Love a good cheese. Cheese plate.

Exactly. It allows you to attach like a light or a, or a microphone or like different things like that.

Every time I talk about cheese plates to people who are not in the industry, they also. Confusion, Confusion ensues.
