And to just be able to talk about that is so awesome. And like, that is why I feel like I have so much admiration for stand ups and it's so smart. It's such a. Like.

Right. But you're touring with you and a guitar, right?

Yeah, I mean.

Yeah, so that's. That's pretty similar. Like, I did. I did an album too and.

Put it out and it was. Yeah. I found it kind of like it was tough. It's. Yeah, it's like. It was a bit of a slog. I was like, wow, this is like.

There's more production involved.

You're giving more than you're getting a little bit. And like. Yeah, I just am Not a mu. Like I'm a musician, but it was just like, man, this is. This is a different world. It felt like a different world. And yeah, like, I. I wanted to go to south by as a musician, so I got like, you know, I did my record labels.

Show in south by and it was super fun, but I was like, wow. Musicians get treated like comedians. Really? It's like, it's better. It's like, easier, you know, walk on

I, I. My relationship with stand up is probably, like, similar to yours, I bet, in the sense that I would always do stand up shows, but I would do characters. Like, I would do.

Yeah. I would do like a shitty stand up character or I'd do, like, sometimes I would do this SoCal character that Beck and I used to make videos with or, or just like a bit that I would write. You know what I mean?

Straight stand up. I've done a handful of times. I've never done more than five minutes.

Yeah. It's interesting because that Johnny Doily thing I loved, and I was like, God, this is one of the funniest things I've done. This is great. But it just ended up being like, I don't know if this is good podcasting, but I was just kind of like, I just don't know what to do. Like, I could make like the Austin Powers of, like, you know, but it was just like, I just need to do something. I felt like, because I've just done two, like, similarly like, totally insane characters that are surreal and sappity Tappity and Bill Cosby Bukowski. That went really well.

But then I was just kind of like, okay, well, I did that and did some videos and I don't know. No, like, what's it gonna be like? You know?

Like, it is like, wow. Just, you know, don't go outside of yourself because it's all in there. And this is, like, too spiritually. It's not funny at all.

It was inspiring to me to, like, do stand up and just kind of generate. That's how kind of. I started doing comedy as a little kid.

And how. How often kind of thing are you over the course of the week, like, crush. Trying to just crush it. Trying to think of jokes or Trying to punch up jokes, or are you now, like, pretty set?

They pop into my mind at the weirdest times. And I think, like, I've been like, if you put a concentrated effort into it, I will think of, like, one thing in three hours. And so, yeah, like, this is my work for today. Jesus. And then. But that will cause you to have nine jokes pop into your head later. Just putting the work in.

Is a slog. But then, like, you're like, oh. You start making the connections.

Yes, I did have bad gas once where I couldn't stand up, but the issue was farting. Well, I guess the issue was that I wasn't able to fart. And I was so backed up that I went to. Oh, a proctologist and my mom reading magazine.

Oh, were you, like, obsessively eating one thing? No, because I went through periods where I'd like, I'm just gonna eat peanut butter, man. And I'd have horrible.

[Beck Bennett]

I might have gone through. I like, I did love cheese and peanut butter. Yeah. So like. And I would actually have cheese and peanut butter sandwiches.

[John Daly]

Yeah.

[Beck Bennett]

So maybe it was like during that time and probably that time and the guy.

[John Daly]

The guy stuck his finger in my

butt and it was like, oh, I feel a little bit better. And then I was able to stand up and fart and poop. And I did not send in the poop samples. Everything was fine.

But I interrupted you. Yeah. So what was it that you.

[Beck Bennett]

So I actually, it was petite malt. Epilepsy, not seizures. Because it was epilepsy without seizures. But I would come. It would happen every day at the same time after school. I'd be coming home into the kitchen to have my, like, make a snack or something. And I would. The sun would be coming in through the kitchen in a certain way, and everything would white out, and I would, like. Or at first, I would get a. An incredible sensation of deja vu. Like, not just, like, a split second of it, but, like, whoa. Like, just, you know, I'm in my kitchen, so I have been there before, but, like. And then it would start to white out, and I would, like, hold on to the counter and would almost white out completely. And then it would come back, and then I would get a funny feeling in my stomach. And then I would get a migraine, but it only happened for a couple.

Scared.

[Beck Bennett]

Yeah, I was scared. But then it would, like, start to happen. Normally. I'd be like, it's happening again. And then I went to the doctor, went to a neurologist, and got prescribed Depakote, which is also a mood regulator that was on. Wow. Throughout all of high school.

And that was not because of your mood.

[Beck Bennett]

No, no, no, no. It was because of my.

[Kyle Mooney]

And how did. And I feel like you've told me about this before. How did it affect your mood?

[Beck Bennett]

You know, I don't. How did the medicine. How did the medicine affect my mood?

Yeah.

I don't know, because I. Honestly, I was still pretty emotional, right? Not. Not necessarily, like. Not like you do.

You weren't, like, smoothed out.

No, I was, like, still having.

I mean, when I. When I imagined. Back in high school, Beck was the captain of the lacrosse team. He also plays Jean Valjean and Les Miserable.

I learned how to sing throughout high school.

And I did that. And then I went to college and stopped and completely. Because I was a natural singer, Sammy.

I did the musicals in high school.

It was real dramatic chops. And it's crazy that we did it in high school. And I just. You know, when you don't know what real memorizing is yet, like, you have to, like, really hardcore memorize, especially for plays, obviously.

Right. Because you don't know how the nerves are going to affect you if you see somebody, you know, in the audience or whatever, like, you need to be.

[John Daly]

You got to have it in your bones. And I just didn't know how to do it. Yeah. So I was like, I'm. I'm at home. I'm going through this play, and I can do everyone's part. Like, I can really. I'm really memorized, you know, I can. I got. I know all my lines. I know all my monologues. And then I got on stage, and I just. I got through, like, the first quarter of it, you know, really well, and I was like, shit, I'm fucking good.

Yeah.

[John Daly]

And then it was just garbage. And there was one guy that played a judge that kind of knew it, and so he would cue me in very obvious ways. He'd be like, what do you think about that?

[Beck Bennett]

Oh, my God.

And that's a kid in high school.

Yeah. Yeah.

Well, that's smart of him.

It was really smart. We needed him.

Were you able to get it back on track for the other performances, or were you, like, did it. Did it rock you at all?

It was one of those things where the first one, like, the nerves of the first one made it so good. And then I was like, okay, it's good.

But then, you know, it was. It was just ramshackle after that. It really. It really sucked. And I felt bad. But I also was like, people seem to like it, right?

I played Prospero in Shakespeare's the Tempest in high school.

I know. Like, I, I mean, I. It is like just the pursuit of it and it's obviously just like, like people bring an idea and we don't know what's going to happen. But I do think that with these ideas there are. It's like in the same way that we like make a joke and incorporate it or like bring up a character and make it part of other episodes. Well, that is like you can be like, oh, let's do like a little bit of that. That's something we've never.

Yes, that's a really. I like that idea. Cuz I feel like recently we've had some good pitches, like trivia. That maybe that's what it is. Maybe it's like, like not that the whole show becomes this thing, but they become segments. You know, I think of like come part of the. Karen did the like first impressions. I think we had a lot of fun doing that. You know what I mean?

Or you have a guest that's like. You have Ken Jennings and it's like, of course we're gonna do it.
