Beck Bennett
This is a Headgun podcast.
Kyle Mooney
Wow.
Rochelle
Yay.
Beck Bennett
Another episode of what's our Podcast. But first, a little special announcement from Becky and Kyle.
Kyle Mooney
This is very big. This is.
Beck Bennett
It's very huge and big.
Kyle Mooney
I think this is life changing for me.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. That's the way I feel. As long as it goes well.
Kyle Mooney
Well, even if it doesn't, it is altering my life.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, it already has.
Kyle Mooney
The big announcement is we are starting a patreon.
Beck Bennett
Yes. You're saying to yourself, oh, yes, it was.
Kyle Mooney
You know, it was a risk. It was a swing to even start a podcast together back.
Beck Bennett
Yes, it was.
Kyle Mooney
We didn't know what it is. We still are finding out what it is every single week when we come together with our guests and when you and I sort of mess around on the microphone.
Beck Bennett
Let's tell them what it is. For the first tier, Rocco Basics here.
Kyle Mooney
It's five bucks a month. You're gonna get a bonus episode every week. No guest. Okay. It's just Beck and I doing what we've been doing Since September of 2003 when we first met each other.
Beck Bennett
For that tier, we have Sloppin out, which is just the two of us hanging out with each other.
Kyle Mooney
It's like our intro to our show.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, but it's longer. We can go into bits longer.
Kyle Mooney
We can also be earnest. Learn about each other's lives.
Beck Bennett
Yes. Catch up for longer. Or we also have what's yous Podcast, where we take ideas from our Patreon members at a certain tier. At the $10 tier, which is the next tier. We take your ideas and we try that podcast out. Right, but you can pitch those ideas at $10 tier.
Kyle Mooney
Yes. For 10. Once you get to the $10 tier, premium rock, which we're calling Rocco Premium.
Beck Bennett
Rocco Premium.
Kyle Mooney
That's where you actually get to pitch the ideas that we will do on our podcast. You're also going to get access to an exclusive chat. A chat room.
Beck Bennett
Yes.
Kyle Mooney
The Discord. The Rocco Discord, where you can talk with other fans, other listeners. Probably kind of make do your own little bits. Make some friends. Maybe. Maybe you can grab. Grab dinner or coffee with one of them sometime.
Beck Bennett
Also with the $10 tier, you get access to, you get to see our. What we're calling our sillies. Yes.
Kyle Mooney
These are little videos. You know, we came up making videos together, full circle. Because now you and I are just gonna make a little video we already started. Get a little iPhone, make a little video, play some characters, do some bits.
Beck Bennett
Just come up with an idea and pop it right off and just shoot it.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah, we don't need to labor over it.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, exactly. We just kind of have fun and pump it out to our Rocco's. You know what I mean?
Kyle Mooney
I know exactly what you mean, and I love it.
Beck Bennett
Yes.
Kyle Mooney
For 15 bucks, you get all that stuff, plus you get free access to our new ticketed livestream. So, like, we will talk to you directly. You can ask us questions. We'll be doing these quarterly throughout the year.
Beck Bennett
We might do poppers there. We don't know yet. It's only gonna be legal stuff.
Ken Marino
But we're gonna have fun.
Kyle Mooney
We have to do poppers.
Beck Bennett
Yes. And here's the thing. For Rocket supreme, if you sign up for a full year, you'll get a side headshot of me and Kyle. Yeah, we don't know, but it's going to be an amazing family heirloom that you get and you can, you know, frame it and put above the fireplace or something. Or something like that.
Kyle Mooney
It is really going to be fun. I think it's going to be a place to see some really weird, wild, and crazy stuff where we just get
Beck Bennett
to do whatever we want without really caring. So. Yeah. So go to patreon.com what's our podcast? And join today, please.
Kyle Mooney
That's patreon.com what's our Podcast? And be in the Rocco Club with all your fellow Roccos.
Beck Bennett
Hi, rockos.
Kyle Mooney
This is JaneWickline.
Rochelle
Kyle and Beck have very kindly allowed
David Wain
me to come on here to tell
Kyle Mooney
you about the upcoming run of my
Rochelle
Off Broadway show in New York. I think they feel a certain fondness
Kyle Mooney
for me because I'm SNL's current freak that gets cut for time.
Rochelle
Anyway, it's a musical comedy show that
Kyle Mooney
I perform with comedian Leva Pierce.
Rochelle
It's called Dukes, and it's about friendship, desire, and beautiful women. And tickets are available@sohoplayhouse.com.
Kyle Mooney
hope to see you there. All right, back to you, Kyle and Beck.
Beck Bennett
What's Our Podcast? What's it gonna be all about? Tell us what's our Podcast? What should we talk about with Beck and Kyle? Well, that's the sound of what's Our Podcast starting. It's what's yous Podcast with Beck, Ben and Kyle Mooney and me. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Kyle Mooney
I'm about to do my podcast.
Beck Bennett
Wow. Yes. Dude. Did you. Did you come?
Rochelle
Did you.
Beck Bennett
Complete podcast. Did you come? Did you. Did you.
Kyle Mooney
I look forward to this every moment of my life. I. I'm like, so.
Beck Bennett
Every moment of your life, you're just like, oh, I can't wait to get
Kyle Mooney
back in the podcast. I've got. I've got something interesting to say.
David Wain
I've got.
Kyle Mooney
I want to interview with somebody. I want to hang out with Beck. I want to say what's up? That's always.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, you can't. You can't wait to go. Can you give it? Can you throw it? Can you say what's up To Rochelle?
Kyle Mooney
Hi, Michelle. I need a podcast.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. I thought you were going to do more like, what's up, Rochelle? Kind of like that.
Kyle Mooney
This is exactly what I love.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, it is pretty amazing. It's just like, what a gift, you know, the fact that to get to play together like little. Like little boys.
Kyle Mooney
Head gum has been such an incredible.
Beck Bennett
Oh, God, Headgum. Yes. What an incredible creative partner.
Kyle Mooney
And I gotta shout out everybody.
Beck Bennett
Don't forget about gumball. The advertising side.
David Wain
Yes.
Kyle Mooney
I was just gonna say that Everybody do the ads for. I love reading the ads and letting people know, like, there's a good deal here.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
And I do remember. Go ahead, you go first.
Beck Bennett
I was. I was just gonna say. I was gonna say, like, I used to do the ads for the podcast. Now I do the podcast for the ads. You know what I mean? Like, I look forward to the ads, and that's kind of why we. I feel like I do the podcast is so that I can do the ads.
Kyle Mooney
Well, I thought it was. Yeah, same same way.
Beck Bennett
Exactly. I think that's most people.
Kyle Mooney
I believe so. I believe I read that recently.
Beck Bennett
Oh, well, yeah, I think there is an article. I don't think you have to read it. It's just kind of like a. It's like a common thing. It's like most podcasters do their podcast so that they can deliver the good deals.
Kyle Mooney
Yes. Well, I mean, it just makes sense.
Beck Bennett
I mean, like, I don't know. You don't even have to read it.
Kyle Mooney
Well, yeah, but I read a lot, so it just.
Beck Bennett
Oh, yeah.
Kyle Mooney
One of the things that came. Came through on my.
Beck Bennett
I don't know, on your feed. I don't know if, like, reading the subtitles on videos on, like, an Instagram feed is considered reading. Like when you say I read a lot.
Kyle Mooney
Oh, wow, that was. Man, that was cool.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Sorry. Well, come on, man. We got people want to see us. What's that?
Kyle Mooney
What do you have in that coffee? Because I think it's a little.
Beck Bennett
I'm wondering. Vodka and razor blades.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's okay. Okay. You watch out, mister, because when you least expect it.
Beck Bennett
No, no, I know. No, no, don't do that. Don't. Don't give it to me. Please don't give it to me. You said you. You were like. So you look forward to this every waking moment of your day.
Kyle Mooney
Yes.
Beck Bennett
And you. Because you said you had something interesting to say.
Kyle Mooney
Yes.
Beck Bennett
Okay, what do you have to say today, Kyle? What do you have. What do you have to say for yourself, Kyle James Kozab Mooney?
Kyle Mooney
Well, I've been thinking a lot about sort of the state of where we're. Where we're at in the world.
Beck Bennett
Okay.
Kyle Mooney
And I think I have a way to fix it.
Beck Bennett
Okay, great. Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
But let's get into the amazing.
Beck Bennett
No, no. That's such a cliffhanger, dude. You have an amazing way to this. Fix the state of the world.
Kyle Mooney
Yes.
Beck Bennett
Okay, let's just say it real quick. Give it like an elevator pitch.
Kyle Mooney
More water, more food for everybody.
Beck Bennett
Oh, for everybody. Because I feel like a lot of people don't. Don't need more food. I think. I think it's a. I think it's a little bit more complicated than that. I think there is the availability of
Kyle Mooney
the food if you want it, if you.
Beck Bennett
If you need it, and to get it for free.
Kyle Mooney
Yes.
Beck Bennett
I think that's a really good idea, Kyle. And I think maybe you should use some of your celebrity power to go to the, you know, the court, you know, go to the. Go to the grocery store. To go to the grocery store.
Kyle Mooney
Pick it all out.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. And put it out on the side of the road. Just go. Just see what happens. Go to a grocery store, buy all the water and the food, and just put it out on the road.
Rochelle
Okay.
Beck Bennett
See what happens.
Kyle Mooney
No signs.
Beck Bennett
No signs. Just put it out on. On the gram. Be like, hey, it's me, Kyle. I'm doing a test.
Kyle Mooney
If you find the spoon or the version.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Of my save the world program. Yeah. It's just out here for free.
Kyle Mooney
Okay.
Beck Bennett
And let's see what happens. Rochelle, can we arrange that with the headgum folks and get gumball involved?
Kyle Mooney
Do you get a company credit card? I do. When do you have a max?
Beck Bennett
We don't have one.
Kyle Mooney
I do have a max. I think it's three. Three thousand a day. Okay.
Beck Bennett
Dude, are you going. Are you burning through that budget daily?
Kyle Mooney
Hang on. I gotta do some quick math.
Beck Bennett
Do some quick math, somebody. So Rochelle is allowed to spend and Kyle's math. Doing the math.
Kyle Mooney
Okay. We're talking 3,000 times 365 days in a year.
Beck Bennett
It's got to be right.
Kyle Mooney
So you. You have a million A million dollars in 95,000.
Beck Bennett
I think headgum is kind of doing the. Somebody's doing the budget wrong. I don't think you should have $3,000 a day to just spend however you want.
Kyle Mooney
Well, that's the limit of the card Total. Total.
Beck Bennett
Oh, every billing cycle.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
That's $36,000 a year for Spindrift.
Kyle Mooney
It's not bad.
Ken Marino
It's not. It's not the mil.
Kyle Mooney
Not a million.
Beck Bennett
Not a million. But that's. That's still. That's still really cool, Rochelle. And it's good for us to know about, too. Wink, wink, Kyle, get a little.
Ken Marino
Well, that.
Kyle Mooney
Well, wait.
Beck Bennett
Wink, wink.
Kyle Mooney
What, you want me to pay you more?
Beck Bennett
No, no. Like, you know, like, if we're looking for. If we're looking to buy something.
Kyle Mooney
Well, sometimes I'll ask Rochelle for a smoothie.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, that's true.
Kyle Mooney
I bet that's paid by that card.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
Ken Marino
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
So you were about to say something amazing.
Kyle Mooney
Yes. Pull this.
Beck Bennett
Oh, your finger. Okay. You're extending your finger, and I'm gonna pull that. Oh, and you burped. Okay, that is disgusting.
Kyle Mooney
Well, we have some. Well, welcome to what's our podcast? My name is.
Beck Bennett
I think I already said this.
Kyle Mooney
Brent Aller.
Beck Bennett
Brent Asshole. And I'm over here, Dickie Weinbacher.
Kyle Mooney
And together we're the Trade. The Trade Boys.
Beck Bennett
The Trade Boys. Okay. Yeah, I'm being random.
Ken Marino
I'm being random.
Beck Bennett
Sauce.
Kyle Mooney
I'm being random Sauce.
Beck Bennett
Um, no, but what's up? It is. What's our podcast? Let's just say who our. Our guests. Guests are. Cause I don't think I have anything else. Amazing.
Kyle Mooney
Well, I have one thing I want to bring up.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, Lay it on, Lay it on, lay it on.
Kyle Mooney
Oh, first of all, don't Forget our Patreon. Www.patreon.com. what's our podcast? Where if you think this is random or weird. Oh, great. They're talking super loud in the studio
Beck Bennett
next door to us, but they can't hear it. The audience can't hear it.
Kyle Mooney
Amazing. We get to hear them talk about. That's so fucking fun.
Ken Marino
Yay.
Kyle Mooney
What else do you want to talk about?
Ken Marino
Sorry.
Beck Bennett
I know that. I love that Kyle. Sass. I love it when the sass comes out. Be careful. You do not want to get in the crosshairs.
Kyle Mooney
You fucking piece. I'm trying to do a show. I'm here with one of the most popular American comedians.
Beck Bennett
Thank you.
Kyle Mooney
And one of the most brilliant podcast director producers. You do that on my fucking pod like Outside of my fucking podcast.
Beck Bennett
I know.
Kyle Mooney
That's such fucking bullshit.
Beck Bennett
I love it when this side of you comes out and you're just, like, so confrontational and saying exactly what you want to say and not holding back at all.
Kyle Mooney
Really?
Beck Bennett
Yeah. I think it's sexy. Really? Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
Rochelle, we might need.
Beck Bennett
Okay. Heated rivalry much?
Rochelle
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Wear the hockey sticks.
Ken Marino
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
You know, bring out the hockey sticks and the hockey pucks, and we start going to town on each other or something. I don't know. I haven't seen the series, but
David Wain
does
Kyle Mooney
your kid do this?
Beck Bennett
What?
Kyle Mooney
This is something that I think is, like, pretty ubiquitous. I think it's classic kid.
Beck Bennett
We'll see my child.
Kyle Mooney
Her, like, main form of joking is replacing a word. Like, so it'll be like, you know, instead of happy birthday to you.
Beck Bennett
Yes.
Kyle Mooney
You know the happy birthday to Boo Goo.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Boo Goo. Yeah. Bowie, Boygo or, like, making up some.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
Some. Yeah. Some jokes.
Kyle Mooney
How funny do you think it is?
Beck Bennett
Not very funny. Yeah. I. But. But Ruby's been. He's been really obsessed with trying to figure out what makes people laugh. He likes. Since he likes saying, do the Moosey paddle. Something from Wild Krauts, and he tries to insert it in things, and I've told him, you got it. You got to surprise us. Insert it in areas where it would. You wouldn't expect it. So, like, if I ask you what's for dinner? You say, or what you want for dinner, you could say, I was thinking about having the Moosey paddle, which, like, he surprised us a couple times out of nowhere with that, and it's been funny. But then he'll do it again, and we'll be like, that's not funny.
Ken Marino
Sorry.
Kyle Mooney
Right.
Beck Bennett
It's just not making me laugh.
Kyle Mooney
I remember my niece and nephew. One I think is either either one of them or both of them got really into the name Bob. There might have been a longer name.
Beck Bennett
That's funny.
Kyle Mooney
Bob's coming.
Beck Bennett
That's funny.
Kyle Mooney
And you. And I'm sure I may have mentioned on the podcast, but there was a kid getting laughs in elementary school. His whole thing was always like, you so. Wine.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, that's tight. I. I used to say, oh, go blow your nose. That was kind of my, like, catchphrase that I don't think anybody remembered except for me.
Rochelle
Right.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. I thought it was pretty smart. Six.
Kyle Mooney
Okay.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
When I was about five or six, last thing I had to. I went to my neighbor's birthday party. She was my best friend, and it was like a dance birthday party. But it was all girls and me. So it was like probably like five girls and me.
Beck Bennett
Nice.
Kyle Mooney
And wore a blue tutu. They wore pink tutus.
Beck Bennett
Oh, yeah.
Kyle Mooney
And I wasn't ready to be comfortable in that situation.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. The Bluetooth, just like the fact that
Kyle Mooney
it was like, it felt like. It didn't feel like boys. Like the stereotypical version of boys stuff like playing ball or whatever.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, yeah.
Kyle Mooney
And I never really danced. The instructor told us like, you're. She's like, to me, you're gonna be introducing the show. And she's like, here's what you say. You say good. You said, good afternoon, ladies and jellybeans. And I didn't understand it because I was like, well, no, it's supposed to be gentlemen. And she's like, no, it'll be funny. People will laugh, they'll hear. Good afternoon, ladies and jelly beans.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Kind of like your daughter's joke.
David Wain
Yes.
Beck Bennett
Like the replacing something.
Kyle Mooney
And I was like, okay, got it. And then I remember, like the time came for me to perform and I introduced the rest of the dancers like, good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.
Beck Bennett
But did you like forget and then you were expecting laugh, but you forgot that you. I forgot.
Kyle Mooney
And then after I realized.
Beck Bennett
And you didn't get a laugh, did you?
Kyle Mooney
No.
Beck Bennett
That's horrifying.
Kyle Mooney
We got great guests. We got comedy legends.
Beck Bennett
Comedy legends. Ken Marino and David Wayne of the
Kyle Mooney
State of the State and numerous movies, television series.
Beck Bennett
They've written many movies together, including Role models, wanderlust the 10 and now their new movie Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass.
Kyle Mooney
They're also in the middle aged dad Jam band.
Beck Bennett
Dad jam band. Yes. They jam around town. And they also. What else? David Wayne. You got Stella, Ken Marino. Many incredible acting roles over the years.
Kyle Mooney
Party down.
Beck Bennett
Party down. The other two, I'll probably tell him. But his performance in Wanderlust, Paul Rudd's shithead brother, is like, to me one of the best like performances in film and television I've ever seen. Let's bring in our amazing guests. I think we're going to. I really hope we're going to have an amazing time.
Kyle Mooney
David Wayne and Ken Marino.
Beck Bennett
Ken Marino and Bennett and Kyle Mooney. So.
Kyle Mooney
Oh, wow. That's kind of cool.
Beck Bennett
So let's see what happens when we get them all. Have you ever had a thought that just wouldn't leave you alone? I have something weird or dark or completely out of character that your brain kept throwing at you no matter what you did to try to feel better.
Kyle Mooney
Get in a loop and you're just like I keep on seeing the same thing over and over and over and over again, over and over again.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. So that has happened to you, brother.
Kyle Mooney
I have. I have obsessive tendencies.
Beck Bennett
Unwanted, intrusive, distressing thoughts that often get stuck in your mind. They tend to latch onto the things you care about most, which can bring up a lot of guilt and shame when you feel driven to do certain behaviors to try to make those thoughts stop, even though that's not possible. But OCD is one of the most treatable mental health conditions out there. If you get the right kind of specialized therapy, OCD needs erp, or exposure and response prevention, which is proven to be the most effective treatment.
Kyle Mooney
And that is where NOCD comes in, because this is something they can help with. NOCD is the world's leading provider of OCD treatment and all of their licensed therapists specialize in ERP therapy. I. And I have.
Beck Bennett
I have used this and was it helpful?
Kyle Mooney
It was very helpful.
Beck Bennett
That's great. Yeah, that's amazing. OCD is often improperly treated, but NO CD therapists go through extensive training led by leading experts in ocd, so they know exactly what to look for and how to help. Therapy with no CD is 100% virtual and covered by insurance for over 138 million Americans. It also includes support between sessions, so you're never facing OCD alone.

Beck Bennett
hi, I'm Beck Bennett.
Kyle Mooney
I thought I was Beck Bennett.
Beck Bennett
No, no, no, no.
Kyle Mooney
Kyle Mooney.
Beck Bennett
Yes. Sorry about that.
Ken Marino
All good.
Beck Bennett
All good.
Kyle Mooney
Thanks, buddy.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. And we host the show what's our podcast here on Headgum.
Kyle Mooney

Beck Bennett
I like that it's all in one place. I don't. I like that I don't have to go around, you know, like different stores or something.
Kyle Mooney
It's just all, well, it's like, oh, do I need to go to like a. Do I need another type of website to, like, find the right pictures or like another type of website to upload?
Beck Bennett
You know, it's all in one place.
Kyle Mooney
The video or the audio or like.
David Wain
No, I want it.
Rochelle
Makes it easy.
Kyle Mooney
Make it easy on me, please.
Beck Bennett
Yes. And you can do all those things. Photos, videos, changing fonts, you know, I mean, the designs are amazing. They're catering to all your different needs. There are SEO tools, which. I know what those are. And their custom domains.
Kyle Mooney
Oh, let's come up with a domain right now. I wonder if it exists.
Beck Bennett
Www.friends meeting friends.

Beck Bennett
So may I ask you a question? May he ask you a question?
Ken Marino
David, may I ask you a question?
Kyle Mooney
I don't.
Beck Bennett
I'm not in either way.
Kyle Mooney
It doesn't matter to us. You don't need to. Can't ask you a question.
David Wain
I don't know what to do.
Kyle Mooney
I think it's a sort of yes or no scenario.
Beck Bennett
I think I'm gonna say yes. Why don't you? Yeah.
Ken Marino
You've been wearing this ring for how long?
David Wain
24 hours.
Ken Marino
Oh, that's it?
David Wain
Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
Oh, it's brand new.
Ken Marino
So how did you sleep last night?
David Wain
Poorly. I mean, I slept.
Ken Marino
What did I say?
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Yeah. What's the data?
David Wain
Okay. But I only slept five and a half hours, which is not enough. And I also had. I only had like 15 minutes of REM. Of REM sleep and only like 40 minutes of deep sleep.
Beck Bennett
Ooh, that's you and you. And you're gonna want at least numbers an hour or two. Right. Of the ranch.
David Wain
I'm not asking anyone else to do this.
Ken Marino
I don't know. Yeah, I want to because I want to know the value of you turn on this ring that you have on.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
David Wain
Well, there's.
Ken Marino
By the way, it looks really.
David Wain
First of all. First of all, I resisted for a long time. Super cool. And a friend of mine has been Doing it for a long time, and she finally convinced me to do it. And then I'm going to give it a shot. It's probably not forever, okay? Leave me alone.
Beck Bennett
No, you can do it forever. I mean, like, it's fine if it's forever.
Ken Marino
He's bearing the lead. Who's this lady?
David Wain
Leave me alone, you guys.
Beck Bennett
Oh, okay. It's us. We're. It's him. I mean, we're fine. We didn't. We're not pushing on the lady.
Ken Marino
He's all right. Yeah, they're fine.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, we're fine.
Ken Marino
It's this guy.
Beck Bennett
It's that right over there.
Kyle Mooney
You're coy now.
Ken Marino
He's shy.
Beck Bennett
He's shy.
Ken Marino
You're right.
David Wain
Yes.
Beck Bennett
Okay. He likes it. He's shy. He's not. Some people are shy and they're like, not comfortable. Talk to me. You're comfortable with being shy on some more questions, but I'm using it as a little weapon.
Ken Marino
It's adorable.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, it's really adorable. It's. It's really adorable to have you both here on this couch. It really is. You guys are. You guys are. You guys look really good.
Ken Marino
Right back.
Beck Bennett
Honestly, you do. You guys look fantastic.
Kyle Mooney
And you know what? You look like? You look like yourselves. There's no surprises here. It's David Wayne and Ken Marino.
David Wain
Right. You thought we would come in here and it would be like, oh, those guys have had a lot of work done.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Because, you know, like, sometimes you can. You can't tell the work in a photo. You're like, they look good. And then you see them in real life. You can see the little stitches marks and everything like that.
Ken Marino
Which, you know, hey, whatever gets you through the night.
Beck Bennett
Well, absolutely.
David Wain
I'll tell you something that I didn't. That I told Ken privately, but now I'm going to say it publicly to you and anyone listening. Yeah, I meant to, but did not take a shower before. Coming here isn't interesting.
Ken Marino
Which is another reason I appreciate this little space here.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Because we all know if you don't take a shower, you stink like shit.
Ken Marino
Oh, yeah.
David Wain
Well, not me.
Beck Bennett
I mean, like, yeah, I can't smell you, but, like, to me, you're not
Kyle Mooney
giving off, like, non shower energy. You very well could have taken it.
David Wain
Thank you. Thank you.
Kyle Mooney
Absolutely.
David Wain
I did take a bath last night. It was great.
Beck Bennett
Wow.
Ken Marino
Like, what makes it great?
David Wain
I had this new kind of, you know, stuff that I put in the bath that gives it. That made it therapeutic, like Epsom salt. Epsom salt based. And then I. I also. I tried taking melatonin for the first time in my life in the tub right before.
Ken Marino
Okay.
David Wain
It was great.
Ken Marino
And did you fall asleep in the tub?
David Wain
Yeah. Let's start.
Beck Bennett
Okay, let's start. Let's get it started.
David Wain
Let's start rolling just for me.
Beck Bennett
When I take a bath, I don't like to see my. My body. I like bubbles. Okay, so let's start.
Ken Marino
Okay, we started.
Beck Bennett
Oh, yeah. No, I think we did start.
David Wain
And action.
Kyle Mooney
I mean, we did. We did technically start, but if there's any of the stuff you don't want in there, if you don't want to talk about so much about the Oura
David Wain
ring, I knew we had started.
Beck Bennett
Oh, fuck, dude, he's. He's fucking with you, dude.
Kyle Mooney
That's like that old school shit, you know?
David Wain
It is experience. Been around the block.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Yeah. You guys have been around the block a couple times.
Kyle Mooney
You guys used to be. We were in the state, right?
David Wain
Yeah, the state was our NYU comedy troop.
Beck Bennett
Yes. A lot of. Lot of people in that group. How many did it start?
Ken Marino
So, sorry, when you said, are you in the state? Do we need to, like, hold for applause for the. I don't know how podcasts work, but do. Do we just hold the audience?
David Wain
The audience is in that other room over there.
Ken Marino
And now if they. But we have to hold.
David Wain
Well, yeah, they choose to applaud. You'll hear it.
Ken Marino
Okay, great.
Beck Bennett
You. And you can. You can. But also if you don't hear it, then you can. You can also hold if you want. Okay.
Ken Marino
I'm gonna just hope for certain lines and things.
Kyle Mooney
Do you want another people?
Beck Bennett
Because when they're listening on the podcast, they might be laughing so hard or something or clapping that they aren't able to hear.
Kyle Mooney
Do we want a second attempt at it here just so you can give them their space?
Beck Bennett
Yeah, let's see what that looks like.
Kyle Mooney
We have time now. You guys were in the state, right?
Ken Marino
Yes.
Kyle Mooney
Thank you.
Ken Marino
No, when would the applause come in?
David Wain
It's really not the answer or after we answer?
Kyle Mooney
You guys are in the state, right? Yeah.
Ken Marino
Yes.
Beck Bennett
All right.
Ken Marino
Can we do it one more time, guys?
David Wain
It's really not necessary.
Kyle Mooney
Okay. Okay, now. Oh, fuck. You guys are in the state, right?
Ken Marino
Well, we were working on something. You're.
David Wain
You're sorry.
Kyle Mooney
Oh, I didn't hear what you said.
David Wain
You guys do. I think you guys have a good bit of some sort, and I'm just going to.
Ken Marino
I thought you were part of.
David Wain
No, I'm going to chill back because I think it's probably really good.
Ken Marino
Yeah, why don't you chill?
Kyle Mooney
I'm so.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, why don't you chill?
Ken Marino
Hey, man, I'm going to chill back on this one.
Beck Bennett
No, no, there really is.
Kyle Mooney
So, I mean, I wonder how many interviews you guys step into and I sort of have to be like kind of bombarded with the sort of like, you guys are icons, you are, you're legends, etc, etc.
David Wain
Forget interviews. Just walking down the street anywhere all the time. Like nothing but. Nothing but.
Beck Bennett
Nothing but icons everywhere you go.
David Wain
Not for me. I do not. I don't. I. No, no. I mean, yeah, but I, I figure
Ken Marino
it's because most people are chilling back.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, most.
Kyle Mooney
You know what I mean?
Ken Marino
Like, it's like they don't want to say anything because they're chilling back.
David Wain
We actually went to Tokyo with our families. A coup. And the people in the, on the streets in Japan were so cool. Just like leaving us alone, like, not.
Beck Bennett
They didn't come up to you at all. That's great. That's great. They were, they were chilling back.
David Wain
They were like being respectful that it was our family time.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah, yeah.
David Wain
Not at all.
Ken Marino
But that's Japanese culture right now.
Kyle Mooney
When you go to a place like New York City.
Ken Marino
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Beck Bennett
I'll tell you, different animals must be all over you.
Ken Marino
Well, first of all, everybody talks different. It's like you got, Everybody got that New York accent, right?
Kyle Mooney
Yes.
Ken Marino
You know, sort of like, hey, new. You know, like, hey, get out of my way. You know, and I thought, I thought
Beck Bennett
they talk that way in Tokyo.
Ken Marino
Not so much. Yeah, I mean, I mean, there are New Yorkers there.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, sure.
David Wain
Ken's on TV a lot. He's a more of a famous actor. Yes, I know that. I will. I'm A plus. Yeah. I'm an unknown person behind the scenes person. Unless I go into like a certain kind of coffee shop where there's guys with beards in their 40s and 50s and then, then I know I'm become a celebrity.
Beck Bennett
Coffee shops are often. I do.
Ken Marino
Riddled with beards.
Beck Bennett
Riddled with beards and comedy fans.
Ken Marino
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Beck Bennett
If you go into, if you go into a, if you've been in a sketch group and have stuff out there, you go into a coffee place and you're going to, you're going to get,
David Wain
you might get it. You might get a free coffee.
Beck Bennett
You might get a free coffee.
David Wain
Which is really why I go all the time. Just hoping.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
David Wain
Hoping against.
Beck Bennett
Hey, look at me.
Kyle Mooney
Is nice.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
Ken Marino
It has American summer Here's a cappuccino.
Beck Bennett
Wet Hot American Summer. You guys. That's classic.
Kyle Mooney
You guys remember that?
Beck Bennett
You guys remember that?
David Wain
That movie is celebrating its 25th anniversary this summer.
Beck Bennett
Wow.
David Wain
And so we're doing a bunch of stuff around that. And it's. It's.
Kyle Mooney
That's so fun.
David Wain
They're also, I think, possibly going to re release it in theaters this.
Kyle Mooney
Oh, wow.
Ken Marino
Wow.
Kyle Mooney
I feel like. I think you may have shown me Red Hot Americans sound really. In the dorms of our college.
David Wain
What was your college?
Kyle Mooney
We went to usc.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
And you both went to nyu and
Beck Bennett
you guys met in college and formed a comedy group. We did the same thing.
Kyle Mooney
The new group.
Ken Marino
We met. Your group is awesome. We met the first day of college.
Kyle Mooney
That's so amazing.
Ken Marino
I went down and David and Craig Weddron, who did the music for the state and everything else we've ever been involved in. Wet Hot American Summer and the Gail Daughtry movie that we did, that's coming out right now. And I went down and met David and Craig my first day because a guy I went to high school with was their roommate. And then I wound up hanging out with David and Craig.
David Wain
When we met, he said, nice to meet you. I got one rule. When your dog and a. In the room, do it under the sheets.
Beck Bennett
Whoa. I don't know.
Ken Marino
I can't.
Beck Bennett
I mean, he's a buddy of yours.
Ken Marino
You don't have to bleep out his name now.
David Wain
Because you don't have to.
Beck Bennett
I think that's cool.
Kyle Mooney
When you're. That's good. I'm trying to do the math on what this means one more time. When you're.
David Wain
I guess dogging a means having sex with a young lady.
Kyle Mooney
When you're dogging a. Dogging. And then what do you do?
David Wain
Do it under the sheets. Because he's. There's one. There's two beds in one room. He doesn't want to have to watch it.
Kyle Mooney
I see. So if it's okay, he's cool with it in the same room. He just.
David Wain
It was before the advent, like the. The widespread use of sleep masks.
Kyle Mooney
Yes.
Beck Bennett
Sleep masks. Yeah.
Ken Marino
I think that's one of the reasons all of a sudden, you know, there was.
Beck Bennett
Sleep masks came to be because of
Ken Marino
all the guys having sex with other people under the sheets.
Beck Bennett
Oh. Or maybe over the sheets. Right. And they were like, we need to solve this problem.
David Wain
The next sleep. The second year at nyu, and we'll go through this day by day, year by year, for sure.
Beck Bennett
Okay, great.
David Wain
But the second year at nyu. We lived in a room with five people all in one room. And so they. And everybody snored. Were you in that room?
Ken Marino
I was. And then listen to Larry King.
David Wain
Right. I would. I blasted Larry King on my headphones. It was on the radio every night so that I could fall asleep because everyone else was snoring.
Ken Marino
The radio was a thing before. Way before podcasts.
Beck Bennett
I. I don't even.
Ken Marino
No, no, we sort of, like.
Kyle Mooney
Because we used to have the. Because we used to have the radios in the cars.
Ken Marino
You had radios and you always.
Kyle Mooney
Okay, well, my dad did.
Ken Marino
Yeah. Your dad, sure.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Ken Marino
What'd you listen to? AM or fm.
Kyle Mooney
I don't remember what that. Shit. I don't know what that is.
Beck Bennett
It's different kinds of radios.
Kyle Mooney
Oh, that's. That's amazing.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, it's really funny.
Kyle Mooney
I was wondering. Forgive me for using this as a. As a tool of research.
David Wain
Pre forgiven without even knowing what it is.
Kyle Mooney
Okay, great. On, I believe, Ken, on your Wikipedia and on the notes that we were given by our producer, it talks about you all meeting at nyu and it mentions, Ken, you having a.
Beck Bennett
That's it.
Kyle Mooney
You having milk carton. Milk crates.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
Full of booze from that you took from a yacht. That was a thousand.
Ken Marino
So I worked at a yacht club during the summer before college because I went to. Because I was like, I want to be an actor. And I went to, like, a mixology school in high school. I was like, I'm gonna be an actor in New York. I gotta be a bartender.
Rochelle
Right?
Ken Marino
So I. So I learned how to mix drinks. I took some stupid course, and so then I used that to get a job at a yacht club. And when I was at that yacht club, I just came across all these bottles of alcohol that then I brought to college.
Kyle Mooney
And that, like, helped in Grace.
Beck Bennett
You'd bring it around and be like,
Ken Marino
yeah, like, hey, anybody want to. You know, it'd be a grasshopper.
Beck Bennett
A little bit of a. I'm gonna dip my balls energy.
Ken Marino
A little bit.
Beck Bennett
A little bit going around people. Like,
David Wain
remember you played that bartender in the Wet hot American summer. 10 years later. I don't know if you remember. It was like, you're jumping on the bar and doing.
Ken Marino
Now that you say it, I remember it.
David Wain
But did you know that I was just wondering if. Do yachts, the boats themselves have their own club where they hang out?
Beck Bennett
The boats.
Ken Marino
Oh, like a yacht. Like, sort of like cars, like the movie Cars? If not, I feel like we should all. I think the four of us because
Beck Bennett
they tried it with the boats, air, the planes, you know, See, it didn't. It didn't go well. They should do yacht club.
Ken Marino
Yacht club.
Beck Bennett
I also worked at a yacht club a summer.
Ken Marino
All the yachts from old money. Right, right. Just like that.
David Wain
Where was your yacht club?
Beck Bennett
It was the Chicago Yacht Club.
David Wain
Are you from Chicago?
Beck Bennett
I am from this north suburbs of Chicago. What? Yes. Yes. Can you believe it? Will Matt and Winneca. Yeah. And you're from Shaker Heights.
Rochelle
That's it.
Beck Bennett
That. That's right.
Ken Marino
Ohio. Yeah.
Beck Bennett
What?
David Wain
Yes, I was in Chicago a long time a year and a half ago doing Mr. Throwback show with Steph Curry was awesome.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
David Wain
Good town.
Beck Bennett
Great town. Was that the most time you spent in Chicago?
David Wain
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
Okay. Wearing this. That's a cool box.
Ken Marino
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
See? Yeah, that's.
Ken Marino
That's you.
Beck Bennett
You should be on camera more, the way you're handling. Just putting a little button on things.
David Wain
Boom.
Beck Bennett
That's fantastic. That's great.
Ken Marino
Threw that. Ready?
Beck Bennett
Oh, do you guys. Do you guys remember. Was there a specific thing that you guys connected over when you guys met in college or was like, oh, this guy.
David Wain
I didn't even say the thing about my glasses yet.
Beck Bennett
Oh, yeah. Oh, right, right. Okay. So for everybody listening.
Ken Marino
No, let's. Yeah, I mean, let's stop that question and get back. Let's.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, we don't even need to.
Ken Marino
No, but hold. Put a pin in that.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, I'm gonna put a picture.
Ken Marino
You hear this?
David Wain
I recently.
Beck Bennett
This is about. This is about David's glasses that he's wearing on his face right now just
David Wain
for marking it for the editor. Good. Yeah. So I got special glasses just recently just for using the computer, and they only let me see about this far away. I was so disorganized that I ran out of the house wearing those.
Beck Bennett
These.
David Wain
So I'm not wearing the right glasses
Kyle Mooney
because I was like, those are your normal glasses.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
Rochelle
So what?
David Wain
I had a feeling. And you took the hook, line and sinker. You thought that what came.
Ken Marino
You really do got to let them up the hook.
Rochelle
Yeah.
David Wain
No, these are my computer glasses.
Beck Bennett
So do you. Are you just seeing computers right now
David Wain
or what do you see? I see everything.
Beck Bennett
You see everything.
David Wain
Totally.
Ken Marino
What does that mean? What does that mean?
David Wain
It's just not ideal.
Kyle Mooney
Okay.
David Wain
Isn't that funny?
Beck Bennett
That is hilarious.
David Wain
They're designed to mainly look at a screen about this far away. So you. I see fine. But not perfect.
Beck Bennett
Right, Right. We're people. We're a little bit further away.
Ken Marino
As opposed to your other glasses.
David Wain
Well, I would see you better.
Beck Bennett
Yes.
Kyle Mooney
Because I'm just imagining, oh, he's wearing his normal glasses, he's walking and he's about to do the podcast.
David Wain
Yeah. Hey, I walk in, it's like, oh, hello, nice to meet you. No, nothing's wrong.
Beck Bennett
Is that. Is that how you guys write movies or.
David Wain
That's the way that's our process, how we do it.
Beck Bennett
That's amazing. You just come up with these ideas.
Ken Marino
We wear different prescription glasses or glasses made for different things. And then that inspires.
Beck Bennett
Can I just write? Well, you know, sometimes. Yeah.
David Wain
And you know, it's. I. Ken may be joking, but we real. That is what we do is we look at our lives, we look at life and the world and then through another lens. Oh, okay. Another. Just the. And maybe sometimes the lens we look at is just a tiny bit, just
Beck Bennett
a little off and you see the world differently.
Ken Marino
That's right.
Beck Bennett
Right.
David Wain
That's it.
Beck Bennett
There's this book, the creativity book. The music producer. Music producer, big beard, Rick Rubin. Rick Rubin. He's all about looking at the world. You know, just change things a little bit. And then like, maybe that's. You're gonna be, you know, a totally different person.
Kyle Mooney
That's really cool. I'm sitting back, I'm like, damn, that's like really interesting.
David Wain
I'm so that I interrupted this.
Beck Bennett
I mean, no, but this is. This is the meat and potatoes. This is fantastic. Like just to get inside your guys brains, you know. Everybody wants to know how they work. And this is.
David Wain
Sometimes we're writing like one of our iconic comedy movies or.
Beck Bennett
Yes. Role models Wanderlust.
David Wain
And we're working.
Kyle Mooney
Wait for the applause.
David Wain
Comedy movies we made. And we're trying to write the thing. And then we like get tired and stop. And then we're just riffing and like just banging on each other.
Beck Bennett
Like you're banging on each other.
David Wain
I'm hitting on it. I'm like, you know, giving him a dis or something. Then we realized he's in your finger.
Beck Bennett
He's kind of fingering him or something.
Rochelle
That's the.
Kyle Mooney
Because I love that fast. Like kind of roasted.
David Wain
Yeah, we put that in.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah. That's amazing because I was gonna ask you exactly about that.
David Wain
Because I'll be like, Ken, you. Yeah, for example.
Kyle Mooney
And now do you.
Beck Bennett
Do you write that exact thing? Can you. Or sometimes they have a character.
Kyle Mooney
This character gives it to me.
Beck Bennett
What I'll do is I'll erase describe.
David Wain
I'll erase Ken. The name canon. I'll change it to Gail Daughtry. Or whatever.
Ken Marino
Yeah, yeah, right.
David Wain
With character.
Ken Marino
I was gonna.
David Wain
I was gonna say they were trying to ask questions. Sorry.
Beck Bennett
That is. That is it. That is incredible. That is really amazing. Yeah, yeah. Writing screenplays is not easy.
Kyle Mooney
Do you go. Who. Whose place you go to or do you have an.
Beck Bennett
Like, is it somebody else's house that you might go to or.
Kyle Mooney
And I think me thinks I might have asked an awkward question.
Beck Bennett
Oh, yeah, for the. For the people listening. David's eyes started bulging out of his skull and he started looking around the room.
Rochelle
Just.
David Wain
No, I was just evaluating in my own head for a second. Is it better to tell the truth or is there a joke answer that might be more entertaining?
Ken Marino
I don't know. Let's ask. Let's ask. You know, the guys.
Kyle Mooney
I'm nervous.
Beck Bennett
I think.
Ken Marino
I think you want a serious answer. You want to.
Kyle Mooney
I think that. I think. Ooh, that's a good question. You could always start joke then, like. No, but seriously, we meet it.
David Wain
Okay. You know where we do it is on the moon. You're fucking Mooney.
Beck Bennett
That's a clip. That's funny shit.
Kyle Mooney
What's going on?
David Wain
But seriously, if you want to know, sometimes we'll do it at my house, sometimes at his house, and sometimes it's on zoom.
Beck Bennett
Okay. Okay. And I. I was gonna. I was gonna ask an inappropriate question.
David Wain
For quite a number of years, we actually lived on different coasts, so. Oh, yeah, that was the whole thing.
Kyle Mooney
Wait, I actually don't. I'm not sure of this, so I want to guess. Do you know.
Beck Bennett
Do I know?
Kyle Mooney
You're from Long Island.
Ken Marino
Yeah, I am originally from Long Island. Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
So one was la, one was New York. Is that accurate so far?
David Wain
You're right on the money.
Kyle Mooney
Okay. Do you have a sense. Do you have. Do you know?
Beck Bennett
No, Absolutely no.
Ken Marino
I. Oh, you have a 50. 50 shot at it.
Kyle Mooney
Well, I know I'm looking like that could be New York or la, that I'm like kind of mixed up in my head. Yeah, yeah, Well, I know that's.
Ken Marino
It's a tough one.
Kyle Mooney
David does. David does a lot of directing and. And that could happen in la. And Ken was on. He's on the other two, and I'm pretty sure that shot in New York.
Beck Bennett
New York, Yeah.
David Wain
But think about thinking Ken's big hair.
Ken Marino
Well, we're gonna need a final answer.
Beck Bennett
Oh, glasses.
David Wain
I'm in a coffee shop.
Ken Marino
I'm on the street.
Beck Bennett
Take as much time.
Kyle Mooney
And I'm trying to picture like, waney days where that would have taken place.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, yeah. And that could be anywhere.
Ken Marino
It could be, but it was someplace.
Beck Bennett
But specifically Brooklyn.
David Wain
It took place in Brooklyn, but I didn't live in Brooklyn at the time.
Kyle Mooney
Okay, so then I guess I'll go to New York. La.
David Wain
Nope.
Beck Bennett
No, I was not even fucking. Oh, my God. This is an LA guy right here. And this is a New York guy right here.
David Wain
We went to nyu and then we stayed in New York, but then he moved to LA, maybe 10 years before me or something.
Ken Marino
I moved to LA in 19. The end of 1997.
David Wain
Oh, whoa. And I moved here in 2013.
Kyle Mooney
Wow.
David Wain
Not to give away where we are, but we're in la.
Beck Bennett
We're in la. Yes, yes, yes.
Ken Marino
Can you.
Kyle Mooney
Can I. Okay. I want to do as many bits as possible, but I'm going to, at times, attempt to ask sincere questions.
Ken Marino
That'd be great.
David Wain
We're here.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, that'd be fantastic. Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
I want you. I definitely want you on my side.
Beck Bennett
No way, dude. No, no, no, no. I say no questions, just bits. Just bits.
Ken Marino
Oh, I thought you were supporting him.
Beck Bennett
No, no, I'm supporting you. I'm supporting you. I want. I want real questions, but you guys don't have to give reality.
Ken Marino
I just have to say something.
David Wain
I'm ready to give a straightforward answer
Ken Marino
because I saw you. I came to an SNL show and I saw you when you guys were there.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
Ken Marino
And I think I said hello to you and I wanted to say hello to you. And then we just, like, walked by each other and I was like, this. Is he mad at me?
Kyle Mooney
Oh, never.
Beck Bennett
That's what a lot of people might wonder. Is he mad at me?
Kyle Mooney
I do remember seeing. Oh, yeah, that's true. No, I was likely intimidated and. And because Jody, who does hair for snl, I think did as well, so.
Ken Marino
Yeah.
David Wain
And the movie called Brother Nature.
Beck Bennett
Oh, yeah.
David Wain
That I was in.
Beck Bennett
That's right.
Kyle Mooney
Yes.
Ken Marino
I was also intimidated, and that's why I didn't introduce myself.
Kyle Mooney
Oh, man. Well, I guess, like.
Ken Marino
Cause I'm a fan.
Kyle Mooney
I'm such a fan of everything you guys have done. And I wonder, like, I guess I started out this way. One I would love. We don't. I don't know that we have to, because I wonder if you talk about this all the time. By the way, we saw what was some sort of state reunion at Sketchfest several years ago. Do you remember this? Yes, I remember you were operating a laptop, I think, and, like, kind of bringing up a lot of fun clips and stuff. But it was. It was really cool. And I think it was before you guys had fully started.
David Wain
We started touring a little bit after that, probably.
Kyle Mooney
But how. How do you feel? I mean, I would. I would love to talk about the whole story from NYU to new group to State, but I feel like you've probably talked about that a lot. So I. I guess I'm just generally curious.
David Wain
Not to genuine cool comedy people like you.
Kyle Mooney
Oh, really? I think that's. I feel like that would be like your bread and butter.
David Wain
Well, I mean, I'm just saying, not all the time.
Kyle Mooney
Do you feel the love? Do you feel that? Like, oh, we've played a big part in sort of setting up alternative comedy and like, the work we've made has inspired all of these. I mean, do you get to enjoy it? And do you. Do you. Do you feel that?
David Wain
I feel like when we went on tour, definitely so many people showed up and told us stories about how much it meant to them or how, you know, what we did got them through tough times or was just important to them and stuff. And that was beautiful.
Ken Marino
That was probably the closest of ever feeling like, oh, people watched our show because normally I think we. I mean, for me, I'm like, I still don't know how many. What the State meant to people, how many people saw it. You know, it was just this little thing that we did that on MTV that. But at the time, we were Always felt like we were on the outside looking in and.
David Wain
But I've always felt like most of what we do is reached a very small group of people and also a very low level of awareness. But for those who find it, they are very.
Beck Bennett
Meant a lot.
Kyle Mooney
And what I think is so rad. And I've not gotten to see the new film yet, which is called Gail
David Wain
Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass.
Kyle Mooney
And when this episode is out, Rochelle, will the movie be out? This episode is coming out July 15th.
David Wain
Oh, it just opened five days ago.
Beck Bennett
Go Stop listening.
David Wain
Hit movie.
Beck Bennett
It's huge in theaters. Yeah.
David Wain
And it's leaving theaters in two days,
Beck Bennett
so you better listen. But I mean, big week run.
Kyle Mooney
It is so rap. You guys are still making fun, silly, smart things. I mean, that is inspiring because I feel like you could have stopped. You could have.
David Wain
Well, I can speak for myself. I have. You know, it's not like they're banging the door down being like, do other things in Hollywood, you know, and. And we've. I, personally, as a filmmaker and Ken, if we've thought about and explored sort of doing more like, you know, mainstream things, and then we just often have Gravitated back to this sort of, like, voice and thing that we do.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. And is. Is this movie. Is it sort of more along the lines of, like, wet Hot or They came say.
David Wain
Yes.
Beck Bennett
Like. Like, it's a satire on these types of.
David Wain
Like, it's not really a satire, but I would say on the continuum of the things we've done, it's on the more, like, weird side.
Beck Bennett
Cuckoo.
Kyle Mooney
And are you guys ever, like, wide
Ken Marino
and you're like, do you have fun?
Beck Bennett
That's great.
Kyle Mooney
Do you, like, go. Are you like. That's a great gag.
David Wain
Yeah, of course.
Kyle Mooney
You get psychedel.
Ken Marino
Oh, yeah, yeah. We get excited about it. And it's also, you know, it's because we've, you know, we. We like comedy and we've done a lot of jokes. Like, we. We're like, is this. Can we do this? Is this a fresh one? Is this a new one? Or is this a variation of one of the other ones we've done? And ultimately we're like, I don't. It doesn't matter. Just put it in.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, yeah. If you've. Yeah. Keep doing different things.
David Wain
Motif.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
Ken Marino
It's an homage to a different joke.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Yes.
David Wain
Yeah. Well, I mean, Showalter was even more into that. He would just be like, do the same joke again.
Beck Bennett
Right.
David Wain
Great.
Kyle Mooney
There was. I was on set a couple years ago, and I don't want to, hopefully. I'm not wrongfully attributing this to you, David, but did you come up with your own version of sides?
David Wain
Yeah, it's called Wayne Sides.
Beck Bennett
What are the Wayne sides?
Kyle Mooney
So sides, by the. Sorry for. But this is, like.
David Wain
Here comes a little insight.
Kyle Mooney
Yes, it is. These are the scripts that. Little tiny scripts that everybody carries around
David Wain
normally on a set. Yeah. There's a. There's a reduced Xerox of, like, the day's pages that are going to be shot. And I did not like the format because you have to flip pages just to do a scene, and it's counterintuitive, and it's from when they used to have typewriters. So I invented a new format called Wayne Sides. And I'm going to make this fast because I hear Ken huffing and putting.
Ken Marino
No, no, no, I'm not huffing. I'm just thinking about it because I forgot that.
David Wain
And they're. And they're like. They involved just. Yeah, they involve better formatting and color and, like, they make more sense. They're more intuitive version of sides. And so some of the places I've brought them to, they've kept them and they still, you know, use Wayne size
Kyle Mooney
and you feel like it's spreading, people.
David Wain
I don't know if it's spreading or not, but I did it. I come up with these things for myself. I also invented my own form of drum notation for playing the drums and I come up with my own systems for myself because I don't like the way all things get the way it's done.
Ken Marino
Can you just explain some of the, the, the drum stuff that you do like to remember? Like what are the words you. You say?
David Wain
Well, I mean, I'm not the only drummer that does this, but I name drum fills so that I can remember what and read them and understand them quickly. So it'd be like, you know, Bagel dog in the Joomjoom house or whatever.
Ken Marino
Right. And how does that sound?
David Wain
Bagel dogs and the boom boom.
Beck Bennett
Whoa. Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
Because you guys, I don't know if you're aware, but you're in a band.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Are you guys aware of this Middle Aged dad jam band.
David Wain
That's it.
Beck Bennett
It mad jam band.
David Wain
Yeah.
Ken Marino
That's another long dad jam band.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
David Wain
Come see Gail daughter in the celebrity sex pass by the guys from the Middle Aged Dad Jam Band.
Ken Marino
A lot of words.
Kyle Mooney
And that was a Covid era thing. That, that's what it, that's what I read. I don't know.
David Wain
Well, we, it's. We started.
Kyle Mooney
We've always been music, music people.
David Wain
I've always been like a fun, casual, you know, or I played in bands when I was younger. In middle school. Yeah, stuff. But then during COVID with extra time, I started making little recordings with friends, like remotely. And then after Covid, he and I and other dad friends just started getting together in the garage and jamming and for fun, just for kicks. And then it sort of organically evolved into a band and to the point now we're touring and making a lot of videos on YouTube and Stuff.
Kyle Mooney
Videos are great. I love when you guys do Billy Joel because I'm a Billy Joel head.
Ken Marino
We're doing the Middle Aged Dad Joel
David Wain
Band at the Lodge Room, which is weeks ago now.
Ken Marino
In, in two weeks.
David Wain
Well, it. This is, this is July 15th.
Ken Marino
Oh, right. This is July 15th.
David Wain
So. But it was a month ago in LA.
Kyle Mooney
I kind of want to guess this set.
David Wain
But we're also heading out on tour.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah.
David Wain
In late July on the east coast and we're doing some Billy Joel and a lot of other music and a little bit of a tribute to wet hot American summer fun. And that's late July on the East Coast. Madjb.com Very cool.
Ken Marino
I'd like. I'd like. You don't have to keep it in the show, but can you quickly take a couple of. Guess. I wanna like.
Kyle Mooney
Okay. How many tracks are we talking?
Ken Marino
Oh, we do like 20, 24 songs.
Kyle Mooney
Okay. I should know from some of the videos that you. Have you got moving out on there.
Ken Marino
Oh, yeah.
Beck Bennett
Oh, yeah.
Kyle Mooney
Scenes from Italian Restaurant.
Ken Marino
Yeah. I'll give you a big hint.
Kyle Mooney
Okay.
Ken Marino
Nothing from the 80s except for maybe. Maybe one song.
David Wain
Except for Glass Houses. We do basically the whole album.
Ken Marino
Is that 80, 81.
Beck Bennett
80, 80.
Ken Marino
All right. So nothing from 82 on you got. Except for one. One song pressure.
David Wain
No, too late.
Kyle Mooney
Sorry. I was thinking of. It's a rock and roll to me.
David Wain
Yeah.
Ken Marino
Still rock and roll. Sure.
Kyle Mooney
New York state of mind.
David Wain
Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
My life.
David Wain
Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
Just the way you are.
David Wain
I think he's got enough.
Ken Marino
No, yeah, we do do that one. No, no, we. Oh, we do.
David Wain
Yeah.
Ken Marino
Just the way. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. When you sang. And I recognize it.
Kyle Mooney
Well, I. I Stiletto.
Ken Marino
We do Los Angelenos. We do. Oh, this. Those are tastes sort of Time. We do.
David Wain
Yeah.
Ken Marino
More obscure ones.
Kyle Mooney
And are you fan. Are you. Are you both genuinely fans of Billy Joel?
David Wain
Yeah.
Ken Marino
Yes.
David Wain
Very much love Billy Joel.
Kyle Mooney
Because if it's fair to say that he.
Ken Marino
First.
Kyle Mooney
For a moment there, people were on one side or the other.
Beck Bennett
I don't understand that. What is the. What is the. What is the critique of Billy Joel?
Kyle Mooney
I think that it's.
David Wain
I just think that maybe some. He's got an earnestness and an unironicness that I think maybe people were like, it's not cool.
Rochelle
Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
It's not edgy, maybe.
David Wain
But I mean, I think he's incredible.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, I do too.
Ken Marino
But his songs, you know, stand last. The stands of time. Stand the last. What's the word?
David Wain
Stand the last of them.
Beck Bennett
Stand around for time.
Ken Marino
Stand around for time. Lance. The stands of time.
David Wain
But I think what a lot of us. I think so realize when we do in the band. And also people watch that documentary that came out, it's just like the volume of songs that we know and love that he. Like just one athletes. Dozens and dozens of classic songs.
Ken Marino
Well, it's because they land the sands of time.
David Wain
They stands the lands of.
Beck Bennett
Lands around time. You guys. So you guys have been after the set when you guys wrote Role Models, was that. That was the first movie you guys wrote together?
David Wain
No, our first feature we wrote together was the 10.
Beck Bennett
Right.
David Wain
And then.
Ken Marino
Which was A weird experiment. We were like, let's write this movie,
David Wain
10 short stories, each one inspired by one of the 10 commandments.
Ken Marino
And then let's not take notes from anybody and see if we can get money and shoot exactly what we wrote.
Beck Bennett
And you guys did it?
David Wain
Yep.
Ken Marino
For better, for worse.
David Wain
No, it's great. It's great.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, I love it. Yeah, I love it.
David Wain
And in fact, the 10 is having a new Blu Ray release this summer as well.
Beck Bennett
Oh, cool.
David Wain
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
Has there. Was there ever a point where you guys were like, we're not. We're not writing together anymore and then you guys came back together, or like, as you have, you guys, like, come together and come apart just because it's been such a long partnership, which is impressive.
David Wain
We've all. We've both worked a lot on other separate projects, but I think we never. We never were like, we are permanent partners or not. And so we just kept just. We just kept coming together all the
Beck Bennett
time and doing whatever it made sense.
Ken Marino
The true. The truth is, is we developed our writing together on the State, like, because different people in the state would kind of, you know, pair off or, you know, three or four people would go off and, like, write stuff for the writing session.
Beck Bennett
Right, right.
Ken Marino
And. And I found myself. We gravitated towards each other during that a lot of the times, and we had fun doing that. And so after the State sort of wasn't happening anymore and we were on different coasts, we kept talking about, well, we should write something together. We did this experiment where because we both were busy with our own lives, we were like, okay, let's write a first draft of a movie. We'll just block out seven days and we'll treat each day as like a work day. So we'll work on a shoot day and we'll come in with no idea. And then within the first day, we'll lock in on an idea, then we'll outline. Day two, and then we'll write 20 pages a day. And then we'll have a first draft of something at the end. And then we'll spend years and years, like, reworking it. But we'll have that thing at the end.
David Wain
And we've done that three times and we made three movies out of it. The 10, Wanderer, Lust and Gail Daughtry.
Kyle Mooney
You don't come in with a concept.
David Wain
Right.
Kyle Mooney
So what? The pitching process is like, oh, maybe something with this. I don't know.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
David Wain
We show up and we're just like, okay, day one.
Beck Bennett
We haven't even emailed each other About
David Wain
a dog or whatever.
Kyle Mooney
Interesting.
Ken Marino
Talk about it for a while. And then I'm. You know, the first draft is a. A honking mess. Right. But you have it. Like, you can hold it and you're like, oh, here's. Now we have a thing.
Kyle Mooney
Did it.
David Wain
But honestly. Yeah. I don't know that. In any case, the first draft was horrible. It was a lot. In each case, the first draft was a lot of what it was gonna be.
Kyle Mooney
Seven days total.
Beck Bennett
Seven days total. And you're in a physical location.
David Wain
Seven days. From like seven to seven each day.
Beck Bennett
Seven to seven each day, same location. You're not over zoom.
David Wain
Right.
Beck Bennett
And so you're like, when we did
David Wain
it for the 10, I flew to LA to do it to hang out in his house and do it the whole time.
Rochelle
Time.
Kyle Mooney
That's very sweet that it worked and that you get to do it again and.
David Wain
Sweet. Your. That's your way of saying it's shocking that it worked because it sucked.
Kyle Mooney
Well, I feel like you could have said for the first movie then we, like, yeah. Developed a new.
Beck Bennett
But, like, it kind of worked. But the fact that you guys are, like, putting yourselves together, you guys could do that. Yeah.
David Wain
To me, what I find it with the way. Oh, my God. I know.
Beck Bennett
That was for everybody who's now watching
Kyle Mooney
Computer glasses on still.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. So maybe that's the reason why part of the problem. Yeah. So David was talking and moving his hands around. One of his hands hit the mic box and it kind of started to fall off.
David Wain
That is one for the agent.
Rochelle
Well, this is.
Kyle Mooney
I mean, I know you say you don't come into the Seven Days with an idea, but there's an idea.
Ken Marino
This is something.
Beck Bennett
Computer Glasses.
Ken Marino
You can use it, but it's not going to be.
David Wain
I think I could see.
Beck Bennett
It's called computer glasses or something.
David Wain
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
Maybe it's not.
David Wain
I think this could be a Hulu play. Yeah. Because they are chomping to the bit for mic stuff. Stuff about the mic.
Ken Marino
They are? Yes.
Kyle Mooney
I thought you were saying they're doing plays. I was like, that's actually a really cool Hulu.
David Wain
Yeah.
Ken Marino
No, that's.
David Wain
That's all I was saying, though, before, back to the sincere thing is that for us, we every. You know, we have kids, we have lives, we're juggling projects. So to. To carve out like one does for a production or a shoot, just be like, this is the time. Nothing else happens during that time, but then we don't have to worry about it for a period of months, you know, like yeah.
Kyle Mooney
Yes.
Beck Bennett
And I feel like as far as it being something sweet, it's like you guys were like, I. That makes sense to me. Because there is sort of a leap of faith of, like, well, maybe if we're just with each other and we can't go anywhere that'll be more impactful than just, like, being on Zoom and, like, meeting up a little bit.
David Wain
I find that. Because I feel like we've. I know that we've talked about other projects, maybe with other partners, where you have a Zoom and you're like, great, now we'll do it again soon. And, like, things dissipating. Oh, I can't.
Ken Marino
Also, you get distracted. You're on Zoom. That means you're on your computer, which means, like, texts are coming in. And like. Like we turn off our phone and write. And then we're like, okay, now we'll have a 20 minute break.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
David Wain
Because I have this theory that I feel like the phones have, like, hijacked our attention.
Beck Bennett
Absolutely.
David Wain
You know, like, society wise.
Kyle Mooney
Oh, snap.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, that. I mean that. Okay, so, like, I want to.
Kyle Mooney
Let's dig deeper into that.
Beck Bennett
Well, that's me.
Ken Marino
Like, this is just a theory, right? This is a theory.
Kyle Mooney
Well, you know, I could have got the drum thing.
Ken Marino
Yeah.
David Wain
But I mean, my feel is like feeling like feeling something. Put the phone down.
Beck Bennett
Yes.
David Wain
Put it down.
Rochelle
Wow.
Kyle Mooney
I don't know.
Beck Bennett
I don't know.
Kyle Mooney
I don't know.
Ken Marino
Maybe.
David Wain
No, I'm saying maybe.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, maybe.
Ken Marino
Right. It's just a maybe.
Kyle Mooney
Did you guys get to go.
Beck Bennett
Maybe you guys get to go to,
Kyle Mooney
like, MTV spring break?
David Wain
Yes, we did.
Ken Marino
Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
How is that?
David Wain
In 1997, we were. I was 27 years old. You're probably 28 or something. And then something like that, we went to about.
Ken Marino
Right. I'm older than you.
David Wain
Yes. That was sort of the height of spring break, mtv. And we went down to Panama City as the whole group, the state. And it was really weird. And we, like, went to this club with 7,000 people.
Kyle Mooney
Did you do bits?
David Wain
Did you, like.
Kyle Mooney
Did they have.
Ken Marino
We were doing, like, wraparounds to stuff.
David Wain
We were, like, shooting little bits.
Kyle Mooney
And then we're now the Fugees or something like that.
David Wain
Well, we were on this one show. We were introduced by Norm MacDonald, I remember. And then we did the. This skit about doing, like, a legit Shakespeare scene. But each person that comes out has a larger visible. Hard on.
Ken Marino
Hard on, Shaky Willie.
Beck Bennett
Shaky Willy.
Ken Marino
Hard on. Well, that was the title of it, Hard On Shaky Willy. But it was straight up a Scene from Beth or Hamlet.
David Wain
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
So it's like kind of playing on,
Ken Marino
like, the COD piece. The person came out with a larger.
David Wain
I mean, yeah, it was a thing, like, the first couple times, you think maybe you're just noticing that you're seeing. But then we. It becomes more and more obvious that it's on purpose as time goes on.
Beck Bennett
That's fantastic.
David Wain
You guys get it?
Beck Bennett
We love Spring Breakers.
Ken Marino
Loved it. We did it in front of a bunch of Spring break. It was like, on the same stage as, like, you know, what. Whatever bands were big then.
Beck Bennett
Smash Mouth.
Ken Marino
Yeah. They play on and then they're like,
David Wain
probably Bill Haley in the comments or something.
Ken Marino
And we. We came out and did a. We did Shakespeare with hard on.
Kyle Mooney
But no. How did it actually play?
David Wain
I think it played fine.
Ken Marino
I think it played okay.
Kyle Mooney
I mean, it's like Big Cop.
Ken Marino
We have done it.
David Wain
It was a sketch that we had done live that we never did on show because we just were like.
Beck Bennett
I don't know.
David Wain
It's not the most interesting thing, but we. It worked great. And we were like, better for that audience.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
Ken Marino
Throw them a bone.
David Wain
And then. Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
And then like.
Ken Marino
Yeah, for the spring break.
David Wain
Because our show at MTV was basically up at the end by then. Or over by then.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, yeah.
Ken Marino
But, you know, we did. But we did these wraparounds and we showed them at our. We did this state tour and we showed, you know, some of them at the. On the tour. And I hadn't seen them since we had done them. And they're ridiculous. I mean, like, they're so not. They're so not spring break material. Material. But that's what I loved about it. Like, somebody finds a stake on the beach that's washed up on the beach, and then they have a. They talk about that for a while, and Tom's talking about art theory and somebody like.
David Wain
They're funny, though. They're funny.
Ken Marino
They're funny. They're good.
Kyle Mooney
Isn't it? I mean, the fact that you guys all met like that there's so many of you have had success.
David Wain
Very fortunate. It's very, very unusual, unique.
Kyle Mooney
I mean, do you know that, like, when you're. Whatever.
David Wain
I do. I mean. Well. Oh, I see that.
Kyle Mooney
These were special people. I guess so.
David Wain
My experience was I was in this other group at nyu and then that Todd Holabeck left our group to start, like, a junior squad because we didn't want to let people into the senior group. And so that junior squad became the state ultimately. So I watched.
Ken Marino
That's why we Were called the new group.
Kyle Mooney
Oh, okay.
David Wain
Yeah, yeah. The new. There's our group. And then the new group. And then I went to go see, just as an audience member, the very first show of this new group called Then the New Group. And I was like, jesus, these guys are good. Like, every single one is so incredible. Like, it was just. Like, there was something and. And also there was an inclusive, joyous quality to it that I really gravitated to wanting to be a part of as well.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
David Wain
So. And then from Muscled himself, I did. But then. And then. But as time went on, it became truer and truer. Like, I'm like, wow, this Michael Black and Tom Lanley and Carrie can. We're like, wow, these are all amazing people. And we all taught each other a lot of what we know and, like, learned from just doing it and from each other. And so. Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
Was there any. I mean. Cause, like, you're nyu and we didn't really have mentors. And there was. You're like, you're not. It's not a Second City thing or a ground lane thing. We were teaching ourselves.
David Wain
And we were somewhat.
Ken Marino
That's a special part of it. There was no.
David Wain
Yeah.
Ken Marino
Like, we were looking at, like, we were proudly outside SNL and, like, you know, and. And the Muppets and whatever. And we were like. Like, we were taking things that influenced us, but we didn't. There wasn't, like, a group before us that we were like, all right, now. Oh, what. What are the. What are the rules? So we were just making it up as we went along and. And making each other kind of laugh and sort of built. Figuring out our. What our style was or what.
David Wain
And like. Yeah, because none of us were the Groundlings or Second City or SNL or anything. Like, we were separate from that, and we sort of like that, you know,
Beck Bennett
and then I was gonna say, when we started a comedy group, we had so many examples. I know, of great sketch comedy groups. Like, you had a stage, I feel like.
Kyle Mooney
Did you?
Beck Bennett
I might have. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Mr. Show. And like, you know, like, all these kids in all these great groups, we had these things that we could look at DVDs or, like, pull it up on the Internet.
David Wain
There weren't a lot of. I mean, we were similar. Time as kids in the hall. Yeah. But other than that, you know, what we looked back at was SCTV and Monty Python and what was the.
Kyle Mooney
Again, I'm sure you've spoken about this ad nauseam, but what was the moment? How did. There was. On a show Prior to the state, like, you shoot it, you watch it, or something like that.
David Wain
You wrote it, you watch it.
Kyle Mooney
And how did you make the leap from college group to.
David Wain
I was like, an intern and had menial jobs at MTV as we were getting towards graduation around that time. And there was that show called you'd wrote a You watcha. And they were looking for directors to make little skits based on things that people would write in. And I went back to the group and explained that, and we decided to, Instead of just pitching me as a director, that we would take the proactive move of making our own sketches by interviewing people on the street and then intercutting it with. With funny reenactments. And so I showed up, like, the next day with three completed pieces. And this was in a time when that wasn't. There was no iPhones or anything. It was not as easy to do that. And they were. The MTV group was impressed. And they were like, oh. Then they ended up hiring the whole group.
Ken Marino
Wow. Yeah. The show was a. Jon Stewart. He was the host of it, and he would read letters, like, you know, most embarrassing parents story.
Kyle Mooney
Right?
Ken Marino
And so he. So they. The way they had it structured, they would. John would read the letter, and then they would have a crew of actors who would act it out, and that was it. And then David was like, why don't we do man on the Street? Shit, I'll go out. We'll go out with my camera, his camera. And then we intercut it with the people actually telling the story as opposed to Jon Stewart reading the letter. And so then that's what we brought to them.
David Wain
And the show became. Yeah, we had our own segments that we made entirely ourselves that were on that show.
Kyle Mooney
And then eventually the executives, like, we should just give you your show.
David Wain
Basically, they let. They. They said, do you want to make a pilot?
Beck Bennett
And they were like, you did this for no money. So we'll just.
Ken Marino
Yeah, so can we pay you all $11 each?
Beck Bennett
Right, right. And we're like, yeah, yeah, that's amazing.
Ken Marino
We get an office.
David Wain
We basically shared a salary of one person in one. One office and one phone for the 11 of us. But we also. The. Another funny thing is, MTV was like, all right, we want to talk about you having your own series. Give us three completely separate pitches for what it would be. And we knew that our show was gonna be like our show, the state sketch Show. And so we had to come up with, like.
Ken Marino
I don't remember that.
Beck Bennett
Did you come with?
David Wain
Yeah, no. Cause remember, this was a Very funny thing that I remember where we had to, like, come up with two other pitches that were like ghost pitches, like garbage. There was one other we came up with. I don't remember. And then the third one, we decided the third one, we'll just see what happens in the room. We'll see. Right. And then Ken was like. So we're like. They're like, okay, that's the second one. Now it's the third one. And you said something about, like, Risk or something, or.
Kyle Mooney
I don't remember.
David Wain
Yeah, we just literally, like, improvised a third pitch. Wow.
Kyle Mooney
They're like, well, that one's fucking stupid.
Beck Bennett
Do that one. We love it. That's stupid. We like that thing.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah, perfect. And, Ken, what about Rock and Roller Coaster? What can you tell us about appearing with. With Aerosmith?
Ken Marino
So when I moved out here in 97, because I had booked a. A series, I moved out here.
Beck Bennett
That's a big deal. For people who don't know, that's a big deal.
Ken Marino
That was a big deal.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, it really.
Ken Marino
I moved out here. It was not a fun experience, but I.
David Wain
But.
Ken Marino
But I. I got it and I came out here, and because of that, I got an offer to. I got a call from my manager. He's like, this is a weird one. Not a lot of money, but do you want to do, like, this scene with Aerosmith and Ileana Douglas? You don't have any lines. And I was like, yeah. To hang out with Aerosmith and Ileana Douglas. Sure. And so I went in and I was the soundboard operator for the pre show to.
David Wain
This is the video that plays while you're waiting in line to go on a roller coaster at Universal.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah, Disney World.
Ken Marino
Disney World, Yeah. Yeah. And. And. And so I went in, and all I remember is I had to. Because the way they were shooting it was like IMAX film. And so they were blowing it out with a lot of light from the soundboard. So I had to get these, like, really thick sunglass contacts, so I. So I couldn't see. I was just looking down at lights.
Kyle Mooney
Right.
Ken Marino
Weird. And then. Yeah, because. Because the way they were shooting it, it had to look real from two rooms away or something like that. I don't know. Whatever.
Beck Bennett
But.
Ken Marino
And I remember Steven Tyler talking about how important flossing was.
Beck Bennett
Wow. He was ahead of the time.
Ken Marino
Yeah. Well, he had great teeth.
David Wain
You know, Steve is a real flosser. Let's. He's a real flosser.
Ken Marino
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Kyle Mooney
Kind of, sort of.
Beck Bennett
You look at those teeth.
Ken Marino
He's a Flosser got some chompers.
Beck Bennett
He's got some big old chompers. Yes, exactly, Kyle. That's a good Steven Tyler.
Ken Marino
That's like a great impression of Steven Tyler.
Beck Bennett
Oh, that's actually really cool to hear.
Ken Marino
Thanks, guys. Now, have you seen that angle?
Rochelle
Love it.
Ken Marino
You know, like that, like that take on it.
Kyle Mooney
I was just truly, I was just messing around in the moment. But yeah, I guess maybe you weren't thinking about.
David Wain
You didn't just come up with that right now while you were doing it?
Kyle Mooney
Yeah.
Ken Marino
Wow.
David Wain
Come on.
Kyle Mooney
That's incredible.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, there it is, Steven. Rock and Roller Coaster.
David Wain
Later you'll tell me that. I think it's probably pre planned actually,
Kyle Mooney
in our last record.
Beck Bennett
Now did you.
Kyle Mooney
Do you get.
Beck Bennett
Was that a bio for rock for Rocky? 4 pictures from rock and Roller Coaster or are you getting residuals for that?
Ken Marino
No, I just got paid one lump sum of nothing.
David Wain
They finally replaced the ride like this year.
Ken Marino
Right.
David Wain
And now you're in the new one.
Ken Marino
So it's now muppets mayhem. Dr. Teeth and. Oh my God, Dr. Teeth.
Kyle Mooney
The electric Mayhem.
Ken Marino
Electric Mayhem. And that's what it is now. And they asked me, they invited me back and I got to do a scene with Hermit. The frog.
Kyle Mooney
Frog.
Beck Bennett
That's cool.
Kyle Mooney
Kermit. He's sort of the head of the
Ken Marino
whole group, as I recall from what I'm to understand. Kermit, sort of without Kermit.
Kyle Mooney
Okay. No, because I didn't know if that's like they just present it that way, like he's the guy in charge.
Ken Marino
But no, he's. He's in charge of it. He actually fired a couple people while we were shooting. I mean, great guy, great frog.
David Wain
Okay. Great funny bit. Haha. But joking aside though, does something going on with him and Miss Piggy or what? Joking aside?
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Are they like.
Ken Marino
Joking aside? I think it's an on and off thing. I mean, I think that there's a love.
David Wain
Okay.
Ken Marino
I mean, there's a deep love there.
David Wain
Okay.
Ken Marino
Sometimes, you know, people are complicated. Pigs are complicated for complicated.
David Wain
Okay. Okay. Okay. So yeah, yeah, yeah, you. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Ken Marino
I mean, you know, I mean, you've seen it. They played a lot of it out on camera, but it's very similar off camera.
David Wain
Okay, okay.
Beck Bennett
Okay. Now speaking of your. Your acting work, I. I have to say you play some of the best, for lack of a better word. Douchebags, jerks.
Ken Marino
Thank you so much.
Beck Bennett
Like, really, like Wanderlust is incredible. Like, man, I played some of those parts and you're one of the people I've looked up to, like, being like. And I was just wondering, like, if there's. If there's somebody that you had, like, there. Somebody that you saw playing those parts where you're like, I want to play. Like that inspired you?
Rochelle
One.
Ken Marino
One person is. Is Bruce Campbell.
Beck Bennett
Yes. Yeah.
Ken Marino
Just because, like, yeah, he's just got. He could play a real jerk. And it's fun to watch and it's silly, but I mean, like, I don't know, there were other.
Beck Bennett
And like. And I guess. And also, I mean, while you think of that, like, is it, like, did you ever come across being like, oh. Because the characters that you play like that. I mean, obviously the thing is to make them likable and fun and you, like, they are so likable. Like, did you ever come up against, like, oh, I gotta, like, pull this back, or, like, I gotta change this. Or it was just.
Kyle Mooney
I don't know.
Ken Marino
I mean, I, like, I feel like there's variations of that I play. Right. Like, some are sort of lovable. They don't mean to be. And then some of them are just, like, straight up, 100.
Beck Bennett
Yes.
David Wain
Terrible.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, they're definitely different degrees. Wanderlust is so.
Ken Marino
Wanderlust is a straight up terrible human being.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, he is. But the whole, like, joking thing. I'm joking. Like, he knows what I mean, like, that I'm being addicted.
Rochelle
Dick.
Kyle Mooney
Is that because a clip came up
David Wain
recently in my house?
Kyle Mooney
You're trying to force Paul Rudd.
Beck Bennett
It's. Sorry, it's. No, no, no, no, no.
Ken Marino
I'm sorry. No, no, no.
Kyle Mooney
I was. I saw this clip came up. I was telling you where, like, you're trying to force Paul Rudd to suck your dick.
David Wain
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Kyle Mooney
What was that? What movie is that?
David Wain
That's Wanderlust.
Ken Marino
That was. Was that.
Kyle Mooney
Get over here.
David Wain
Come on.
Kyle Mooney
Suck my dick.
David Wain
Suck my dick. Come on. He knows I'm joking. It's just, like, weird.
Ken Marino
It gets real uncomfortable.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah, it was very funny.
Beck Bennett
It's. It's incredible. I could watch you do.
David Wain
I mean, there's things we did, like, in that. In Wanderlust, you know, we would sometimes really push, try something, then. Then edit. We're like, well, maybe don't. There was a scene we did where he. He's freaking out on Paul Rudd, then he pulls out a gun. He's gonna shoot himself.
Ken Marino
That's in the bizarre. That's in the bizarro cut.
David Wain
Yeah. We made a different cut of Wanderlust that's entirely made up of footage. That's not in the movie. Movie.
Kyle Mooney
And did you get it?
David Wain
It's like you can get it. You can see it on Amazon or.
Ken Marino
Oh, cool. An hour long. Not stuff that's in the movie, but the same story.
Beck Bennett
Oh, wow. Cool, cool.
Ken Marino
Feelings mutual. I love watching your characters. You played an character in the other two.
Beck Bennett
Yes, I did. Yeah.
Ken Marino
And you were great.
Beck Bennett
Oh, thank you so much. I mean those guys are good at like really stripping it down and being like, don't just be. Just like say the lines simply. And it's like that does a lot of the work for you. You don't have to put too much on it. You know, sometimes.
Ken Marino
Sometimes if the lines are assholey, you say them truthfully.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Like as if you're a good guy and you're not doing anything.
David Wain
I once was helping something. I don't want to say. I don't think I remember exactly the details, but I pitched a line that you said in something really. And it was so great and it was very. It was made me happy.
Beck Bennett
Oh, man. I want to know what that is.
Ken Marino
I'm going to figure out maybe next
Beck Bennett
podcast I'm going to go through, watch all my performances.
Kyle Mooney
I don't want to. I feel like I don't want to feed either of your egos, but I'm curious. You're both handsome men and I wonder if there's something like the. If there's like a. An asshole thing that like, it's like you need to be psych. Sort of a level of good looking almost to play this particular type of asshole.
David Wain
Or else you got nothing.
Kyle Mooney
It's somebody who's like, or else.
Beck Bennett
What do we have?
Kyle Mooney
Right. You're confident. You know what I mean?
Ken Marino
It's a confidence. It's a confident asshole who thinks, you know, it's the privilege Aged white.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
David Wain
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
Dude, he looks like whatever I want. Yeah.
Ken Marino
Yeah. I'll say whatever I want whenever I want because I've. I. Because I deserve it.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, right. Yeah.
David Wain
That is kind of the underlying. Yeah. Tie together thing in a way.
Kyle Mooney
And we're kind of the guys with glasses.
Ken Marino
He's a real jerk.
David Wain
We could do our own team up as well.
Beck Bennett
Why?
Kyle Mooney
I don't know if that'll work.
David Wain
But now no one on the silver screen.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah, that would be a future starring.
David Wain
Yeah, I have some more water.
Ken Marino
I would love that feature.
Beck Bennett
I don't know. Yeah, maybe you guys are brothers and. We're brothers and there's some sort of summer competition at like a. I don't know.
Kyle Mooney
Yes. Or it's a Body swap?
Beck Bennett
Yes. Come on. Body swap?
Kyle Mooney
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
Okay.
David Wain
Well, between the temple and the church.
Beck Bennett
Between the temple and the church? Yeah.
David Wain
I don't know.
Beck Bennett
We're church guys who are temp your temple guys.
Ken Marino
I guess that's where he's going with that.
David Wain
I don't know. Know.
Ken Marino
You don't know?
David Wain
I'm. Yes, that's where I was going with it, but it's sort of abandoning skin. I feel like I'm gonna ask that we move on.
Kyle Mooney
Well, our producer left. Maybe Rochelle's getting you water. I don't really know.
David Wain
I did ask her. I'm sorry. I. No, no, no.
Kyle Mooney
You're good.
David Wain
Out of turn.
Ken Marino
I heard it on. On the mic. He asked for water.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah, no, I. I heard it, too, and you deserve it.
David Wain
What do you got, condenser mics here?
Beck Bennett
I don't think we have condenser mics here.
David Wain
Okay, cool.
Ken Marino
I wouldn't know. What is a condenser, Mike?
David Wain
I'm not really sure.
Ken Marino
I have a question for you. What's head gum? I know it's the name of the company.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. No. Yeah, Rochelle, what is it?
Ken Marino
Gum made of hay.
Beck Bennett
It's a brain.
David Wain
It's like something you can chew on in your brain.
Beck Bennett
Yes.
David Wain
Head gum. That's what it means. That's what it is.
Ken Marino
Something you can chew on in your brain.
David Wain
It's head gum. It's, like, gives you ideas or content you can chew on and enjoy.
Ken Marino
That's not an expression.
David Wain
They made it up. The expression.
Ken Marino
They made it up.
David Wain
I think there was a website a long time before. Before even podcasts. Oh, God, I could. Talk to me.
Ken Marino
How much longer?
Beck Bennett
The knowledge.
David Wain
I mean, you know, in. In old radio.
Ken Marino
Can you do your old timey radio voice? Probably not. Oh, he's out. He's sleeping. Should we sneak out?
Beck Bennett
Yeah, let's get out of here.
Kyle Mooney
I thought he was just trying to access it, but yeah, I mean, we don't need to.
Ken Marino
We don't?
David Wain
No. I just got bored with what I was saying.
Kyle Mooney
We've been talking for 15 years.
Ken Marino
We got to talk about Gail Daughtry and the celebrity sex. Pass. Did we do that?
Kyle Mooney
We really have to get moving.
Ken Marino
No, we have.
Beck Bennett
No, no, let's. Let's talk about the movie. We have to talk about the movie. So. Yes, let's talk about the movie.
Ken Marino
Movie.
Beck Bennett
What?
David Wain
I'm just gonna do some math here, though. If they've lasted this long, they're probably the type of person that's probably gonna see the movie already. Yeah, but we should talk about it.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, we can also move forward. We can also move it forward.
Ken Marino
Let's not talk about the movie.
David Wain
No, I want to talk about it.
Beck Bennett
Let's talk about it.
David Wain
So it's called Gail Daughtery and the Celebrity Sex Pass.
Beck Bennett
Yes.
David Wain
And has an incredible cast led by the incomparable Zoe Deutch as the aforementioned Gail Daughtry. And she plays this woman in the Midwest who has a celebrity sex pass agreement with her husband to be. And he amazingly meets his celebrity and has sex with her, taking it literally. So she's distraught. She finds herself in Hollywood and a psychic tells her, hey, you've got to find your celebrity, Jon Hamm.
Ken Marino
Even the playing field.
David Wain
Have sex with him.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, that makes sense.
David Wain
And then save your relationship by balancing it out. And so she goes epic journey. She meets people on the way, like Ken Marino and Ben Wong.
Ken Marino
Well, not me. A character I play. I play a character, a jerk. She doesn't meet Ken Marino in Hollywood
Beck Bennett
because I haven't seen the movie. But you look a little different in the slide. You have different characters, but he plays
David Wain
a hot headed jerk with a heart of gold.
Beck Bennett
Okay.
David Wain
And she meets one of the people she meets along the way. Try to find Jon Hamm. Is John Slattery playing himself as an out of work actor? Who wants to. To find Jon Hamm?
Kyle Mooney
Also, I'm gonna keep going back to this, that this was part of the seven day process.
David Wain
That's right.
Ken Marino
But this is called Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass. Just one of the many Gail Daughtry movies. What's.
Kyle Mooney
What.
Ken Marino
When do you remember seeing your first Gail Daughtry movie? And which one did you love the best?
Kyle Mooney
I snuck in and I was in seventh grade and it was Gail Daughtry goes up in flames.
David Wain
Yes. Oh, that was a great one. That was a fun show, actually, because we were in Tunisia doing the flame stuff because they wouldn't let us do it here.
Ken Marino
Yeah. And a couple people got hurt, but
David Wain
they were okay, glad you enjoyed it.
Kyle Mooney
And I liked.
Beck Bennett
I liked Gail Daughtry going around in a plane. Yeah. She was up in the air and it was like she couldn't get down.
Ken Marino
That one we just did for fun. It's a short.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
Ken Marino
And it's just literally her going around in a plane.
David Wain
Well, because my bud had that plane
Ken Marino
set and we were like, let's take advantage of your bud's plane.
Beck Bennett
Oh, that's amazing. Yeah. What other girl?
Kyle Mooney
Daughtry. Gail Daughtry on the court. On the basketball court.
Beck Bennett
Yes.
Rochelle
Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
Gail daughter on the court.
Ken Marino
On the basketball. And. And I.
David Wain
What? They wanted us to shorten that. My favorite Gil D. On the court. And we're like, no D. On the court. On the basketball court.
Ken Marino
On the basketball court. On the court. On the basketball court. And we. And what was great about that one is we didn't think we were going to get Allen Iverson to be in it.
Kyle Mooney
Yes.
David Wain
And to play the judge in the court.
Ken Marino
Play the judge you had.
Kyle Mooney
Because you had her playing for the. The 76ers. You could have had him.
David Wain
Right.
Kyle Mooney
Play, like, just play himself.
Ken Marino
We got him as the judge, and
Kyle Mooney
that's why I was like, okay, these guys are a little different.
David Wain
That's what I was saying earlier about the lens.
Beck Bennett
It's not what you'd expect right away. Yeah. Twist around.
Kyle Mooney
And what was. What's been your favorite Gail Daughter film to work on? I mean, I'm sure you love them. They're like. They're like my baby.
David Wain
You know what, though? Just, like, to me, it's like, we just. We just finished Sex Pass this year, and I feel like that's really one that kind of incorporates everything I. All the things. All the tent poles of what makes a Gail Dodge a great Gail Daughtry movie. They're all in Gail Daughtry in the celebrity Sex Pass.
Beck Bennett
And what do you like about sex?
David Wain
Okay.
Beck Bennett
Well, we all love it.
David Wain
I love so many people.
Beck Bennett
It's incredible.
David Wain
So many parts of sex. But one of my. One of my very favorite parts is that part right at the end.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
David Wain
Where, like, it really feels like it's all coming out.
Kyle Mooney
Like, I love that part.
David Wain
It's so. It's very climactic for me.
Kyle Mooney
I was talking to my friend Brandon about this.
Ken Marino
Yeah. Oh, what were you talking to Brandon about?
David Wain
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
What were you.
Kyle Mooney
Brandon, you're talking about this exact same thing.
Beck Bennett
The messy part at the end, everything comes out.
Kyle Mooney
Because that was. Because, like, I remember. Like, I was like, whoa, you have
Beck Bennett
to talk to a friend about it, because. Incredible. This is unbelievable.
David Wain
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
Yes.
David Wain
It happened because you can't keep. So it happened to me for the first time.
Ken Marino
I know what it's called.
David Wain
It happened to me the first time about five years ago. And I remember calling Ken and being like. Like, ken, does this ever happen to you? And he's like, yes.
Ken Marino
Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
And he's like, it's called.
Ken Marino
Well, it's called I'll maybe.
Beck Bennett
I don't know if we can really sit.
Kyle Mooney
That's ejaculation.
Ken Marino
Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
No, no, no.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Everybody. Now everybody knows.
Ken Marino
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
But.
David Wain
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
No, the ejaculation part. Sorry, I thought we could say it now. I'm sorry.
Ken Marino
No, you're allowed to say one time and then you don't have to get the extra.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, so we'll cut that.
David Wain
We'll think about it. Think about how odd it is and maybe is this purpose or not purpose, that ejaculation rhymes with staycation.
Ken Marino
I do think about that a lot since you've said it, because I'm really confused by it. Wow.
Kyle Mooney
And it's like whenever you're sort of
David Wain
like, everyone's like, oh, I'm going to have a staycation. Like, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Beck Bennett
I know what you're talking about.
Ken Marino
Sure.
Beck Bennett
You.
Ken Marino
Maybe it's.
Beck Bennett
Maybe it's been code this whole time.
Kyle Mooney
Sounds like if you staycation, you're just coming all over the place.
Ken Marino
Yes.
David Wain
Right.
Beck Bennett
That's amazing. That's. That's. That's the kind of staycation that I could go on. Yeah, yeah.
Kyle Mooney
A comecation.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Stay, I would say. Or staycation.
David Wain
Not.
Beck Bennett
Okay, not come. Staycation.
David Wain
I just. I. My buddies who are like, hey, I'm not going to work this week. I'm having a cum fest. I'm like, you're the more honest ones.
Beck Bennett
Rare.
Kyle Mooney
Rare, right? Yeah.
Beck Bennett
Well, that's Gail Daughter celebrity Gail Daughtry
David Wain
and the celebrity Sex Paths in theaters. Check it out.
Kyle Mooney
How was that?
Beck Bennett
I'm very excited.
David Wain
How crafty was good? Good?
Kyle Mooney
Yeah, yeah, Solid. Great.
David Wain
No, no, no shot here.
Kyle Mooney
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
David Wain
Takes place in Hollywood, California.
Kyle Mooney
That's nice.
David Wain
Shot on location in la.
Kyle Mooney
And you guys, what's.
Ken Marino
Am I going to badmouth the crafty people? They work so hard.
Beck Bennett
It works.
Kyle Mooney
Of course, of course.
Ken Marino
So you're going to. You're going to. You're going to cut.
Kyle Mooney
You know what I'm trying to get these guys. You try to ask me the question.
David Wain
A lot of people work hard.
Ken Marino
Like, I'm going to throw somebody under the bus. No, it's not my first barbecue.
David Wain
You know, Joe on crafty was Dr. Joseph Mengele. Worked very hard, but I will badmouth him for being a Nazi Jew killer.
Beck Bennett
Oh, yeah?
Kyle Mooney
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
And who's that?
Ken Marino
That mingler?
Beck Bennett
Oh, right. Yes, he's famous.
Ken Marino
Joey. Joey Ming.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Thank you for saying something. It's important to got.
Ken Marino
You got to put it out there because if you don't and you hold on to it, it's just going to rot. And.
David Wain
And I just feel like I've seen a lot of podcasts recently where people are very silent. On that one.
Kyle Mooney
Absolutely.
David Wain
And I just feel like that's ridiculous. It needs to be said.
Ken Marino
Oh, Dave, you're brave.
Kyle Mooney
Wow.
Ken Marino
All heroes don't wear masks, cups, uniforms, protective cups.
David Wain
Heroes don't wear computer glasses.
Beck Bennett
Computer glasses.
Ken Marino
Stands the test of time.
Kyle Mooney
Yes.
Ken Marino
Stands the test of time.
Kyle Mooney
It is. Oh, there you go. No, Michelle's reaching for.
Beck Bennett
Pulling out her paper. Oh, no, no. Show us the paper.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah, let's show.
David Wain
Wrap it up.
Beck Bennett
Next segment.
Kyle Mooney
We're talking.
Ken Marino
I forgot to press record.
Kyle Mooney
Next segment. Okay.
Beck Bennett
Oh, no, I did it again. I didn't press the button.
Kyle Mooney
Rochelle, it would be okay. I'm sure we'd figure something. It'd be okay. Can we just entertain the idea that the last hour was not recorded?
Ken Marino
What?
Kyle Mooney
Now our producers reach out to you or your reps and are like, like, sorry, we had an issue.
Beck Bennett
Sorry.
Kyle Mooney
What do you think it's like, Is it just h. Yeah, we got other to do, or do you think, like, oh, we do, like, a makeup zoom. What. What is the scenario that plays.
David Wain
I'm going to say, as far as, like, redoing it? No chance.
Ken Marino
Okay. And I would. I would come right back. Okay.
Beck Bennett
Okay.
David Wain
I once did. For real.
Beck Bennett
We can put a little dummy in for.
David Wain
We did a Comedy Bang Bang live show at south by Southwest, like, 10 years ago, and it was, to me, one of my. I've never laughed harder in my life at any time anything. It was so funny. And they're like, oh, it wasn't taped. And we didn't do. No offense to those guys.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, no offense, but those guys are great.
David Wain
They only made one mistake.
Kyle Mooney
Shout out to the Comedy Bang Bang universe.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, the big mistake. Shout out. Now, Rochelle told us we need to move on to our next segment. It's true.
Ken Marino
Does that mean we're not part of it?
Beck Bennett
No, you're part of it.
David Wain
Oh, okay.
Beck Bennett
So you guys, I think you were told to come in with an idea for what our podcast should be about.
Rochelle
About.
Beck Bennett
Is this true?
David Wain
Nope. Nope. Oh, that's. What's our podcast.
Rochelle
Right.
Beck Bennett
What's our podcast cast not pad.
Ken Marino
Yeah.
David Wain
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
Not padcast.
David Wain
Got it.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Did somebody say padcast?
Kyle Mooney
I just pad guest.
Ken Marino
I wasn't gonna say anything.
Beck Bennett
We don't know what our podcast should be about. So we were just wondering if you guys have an idea for what our podcast.
David Wain
I do.
Beck Bennett
Okay, great. Why not? Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
And you guys are in concert with each other?
David Wain
I don't know.
Ken Marino
Sure.
Kyle Mooney
Okay.
Rochelle
I mean, you.
Beck Bennett
Well, usually maybe when they do their band, but.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah. Oh, yeah.
Rochelle
Okay.
Beck Bennett
Pretty good.
Kyle Mooney
Don't Go.
Ken Marino
Changing.
David Wain
Listen, here's the idea. You. We're talking, we're doing whatever, but then when you guys just, like, kind of, like, diss on each other, that's the best.
Beck Bennett
When we dunk on each other, like, that's the podcast.
Kyle Mooney
Okay.
Beck Bennett
Okay.
Ken Marino
I was gonna say cats.
Kyle Mooney
Just the animal.
David Wain
Or podcats.
Beck Bennett
Podcast.
Ken Marino
Podcasts.
Kyle Mooney
Okay, so. So we have two pitches here.
David Wain
Oh, oh, wait a minute. No, I've got a better one.
Ken Marino
Oh, all right. Well, I'm sticking with podcasts.
Beck Bennett
Podcasts are really good.
David Wain
What if your podcast is interviewing thought leaders?
Beck Bennett
Okay.
David Wain
Like, bring in people.
Ken Marino
Thought weavers.
David Wain
Thought leaders who can tell. You can, like, talk.
Ken Marino
I like thought weavers.
David Wain
Experts in things like AI or culture, you know, and then they can talk about that, and you can ask them questions.
Ken Marino
That's fresh.
Beck Bennett
That's good.
David Wain
Yeah.
Ken Marino
Well, now, do you.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah. Do we.
Beck Bennett
What do we want to do with these guys?
Kyle Mooney
In theory, we'd maybe have to. I think somebody here would have to be the thought leader.
David Wain
Yeah, I'm a thought leader, but they're also.
Beck Bennett
Podcasts is on the table, too.
Ken Marino
Podcasts is my pitch, but also my backup is thought weavers. Right.
David Wain
Oh, Thai cooking.
Ken Marino
Oh, that would be great, because I don't even know how to do it, but I love the food. I love food.
Beck Bennett
I've cooked Thai stuff before.
David Wain
Yeah.
Ken Marino
Yeah.
David Wain
Okay.
Ken Marino
See, so then you can be the kind of the guy who knows it all.
Beck Bennett
I can be the thought weaver salad.
Ken Marino
I'm just learning, like, oh, whoa.
Kyle Mooney
How'd you do that?
Ken Marino
What are the spices? I don't know.
Kyle Mooney
Problem.
David Wain
The only problem with it is that there's a much better idea because it's so hot Pot, pickle ball. Right?
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
Pickleball is good, too.
Beck Bennett
We. These are all great ideas.
Kyle Mooney
I have my. I. I got to say I'm leaning a certain way.
Beck Bennett
Then you go with that. Go.
Kyle Mooney
That's not. I feel like we could all have. Are you leaning something?
David Wain
I am not leaning better.
Ken Marino
For the love of better be podcast.
Kyle Mooney
I am leaning podcast.
Beck Bennett
I'm leaning podcast, too.
David Wain
I'm fine with it.
Beck Bennett
It's open. We can do. But we can bring any of these. We can bring thought weavers, and maybe
Ken Marino
a cat eats Thai food and you're like, well, if you break off and you start talking about Thai food, by the way.
David Wain
Way.
Beck Bennett
Right.
Ken Marino
Maybe cat's not good for cats, but for me, slam dunk.
David Wain
No, no. But you got to stay in your niche or you're never going to make it on the social algorithm.
Kyle Mooney
But have you heard some of These podcasts, they just sort of meander, right? So it's like. It's a podcast podcast. All of a sudden you're talking about what did I do with my underwear last night? Whatever.
Beck Bennett
It's like, meow. Where'd you guys go for. Where do you guys like to get coffee?
David Wain
Oh, I know what you mean. So, like, for example, say two hosts are starting a Monday morning show show. And they start with like, oh, how was your weekend?
Kyle Mooney
Yes.
David Wain
Got it.
Kyle Mooney
But then it gets into, like, the today of, like, the Roman history or whatever.
Ken Marino
I have something for the holidays. Okay, now we. Christmas. That's great, right? Or happy new meow.
Beck Bennett
Okay, maybe it's a.
Ken Marino
The.
Beck Bennett
The holiday episode of a POD podcast.
Ken Marino
Podcast is Happy, Happy new meow.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, Happy new Meow.
Kyle Mooney
Happy new meow.
Ken Marino
From.
Kyle Mooney
From the podcast.
Ken Marino
From the podcast. Or meowy. We wish you a meowy Christmas.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, okay. Okay, perfect. We'll be right back with the Christmas episode of.
Kyle Mooney
Oh, wait, no, no. David has. David has that.

Kyle Mooney
Very meowy Christmas to you.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Happy, happy meow year to you, Kyle. I gotta say, you seem a little bit hornier than normal.
Kyle Mooney
I had, I had, I had such an interesting thing happened to me.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
When I was walking, I was walking to my bowl that Lizzy puts out for me.
Beck Bennett
That's incredible. Yeah. Lizzy. Shout out. Lizzy, you're.
Kyle Mooney
And I was like, now wait a second, something's not right here. What is that smell?
Beck Bennett
What was the smell?
Kyle Mooney
It turns out that there was an old banana peel and it's like. And I'm like, okay, that seems.
Beck Bennett
Oh, there goes the mic.
Kyle Mooney
I start tossing around, having the time of my life. And I'm like, wow. For me, a cat, really, anything can be fun.
Beck Bennett
That's an incredible point. That's a really incredible point. Do you ever, do you ever go in the litter box?
Kyle Mooney
Uh huh. Yes.
Beck Bennett
I go, well up your old shits.
Kyle Mooney
Yes. And it's, it's hardened, right.
Beck Bennett
And it's kind of like caked in the kitty litter stuff.
Ken Marino
Yes.
Beck Bennett
Do you ever eat them or hide?
Kyle Mooney
I, I find that, I find that uncouth.
Beck Bennett
Okay. I like to eat my.
Kyle Mooney
It's a, it's a very special time of the year. I'm having a good time.
Ken Marino
Meow.
David Wain
Right?
Kyle Mooney
Meow with you.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, it's an absolutely. That's perfect.
Kyle Mooney
Pause.
Beck Bennett
Yes. Pause for applause. No, but podcast, that's what it's all about. You told us. Podcast. That's what we'll talk about with Beck and Kyle. Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow everybody.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah. We have very meow guests.
Ken Marino
Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, Meowy Christmas.
Beck Bennett
Meowy Christmas.
Kyle Mooney
And yum Reno and David Wayne.
David Wain
Meow, meow.
Kyle Mooney
Hello.
David Wain
Meow, meow, meow, meow. I love this time of year because when it's Meowy Christmas, I get a little present, which is a little cat scratcher.
Beck Bennett
And. And so you get a little. You get a little cat scratcher.
David Wain
Well, I hope so if I've been a good cat this year. Meow, meow, meow.
Beck Bennett
What do you.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah, I'm looking over. You look like a fine cat to meow.
Beck Bennett
What are you gonna do with that cat scratcher? What do you, what do you, what's your first like what did you bring?
David Wain
My little claws. And I go and I'm very happy. Meow, meow, meow.
Ken Marino
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
That's incredible.
Ken Marino
Meow, meow.
Kyle Mooney
I'm getting.
Beck Bennett
Okay. Yeah.
David Wain
What are you gonna get for Christmas?
Beck Bennett
Meow, meow. Ken, did you hear the meow question?
Ken Marino
Yes, I did.
Kyle Mooney
What are you hoping for, meow?
Ken Marino
Anything you're hoping to get for Christmas? Yeah, I'm hoping to get, like, a play toy of some sort. Maybe something I can just, like, you know, play with my owner, who can just kind of wiggle the thing around and I can swat it around.
David Wain
Yeah. Now, Ken, what about.
Ken Marino
What. I'm also hoping to take some. Get some pills so I don't get worms. Yeah, but what about.
David Wain
Do you ever feel like meow, meow on Christmas, you'd like to have a little treat? Meow, meow, meow.
Ken Marino
Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
What the is up with that?
Ken Marino
No, I mean, you know, I like a treat all times, not just for Christmas.
David Wain
Oh, yeah. All times. Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
He's sexy as all hell.
Ken Marino
What kind of is it?
Beck Bennett
Everybody's a little horny today. That's the way cats are.
Ken Marino
Yeah, that's the way. That's the way. What's her name on old. The old Batman. That's Catwoman.
David Wain
Yeah. Eartha Kit.
Ken Marino
Eartha Kitt. You're like the Eartha Kit cat.
Rochelle
Cat.
Ken Marino
Oh, my God.
Beck Bennett
Oh, my God.
Ken Marino
Did I just fall into. Did I just.
Beck Bennett
Incredible cat.
Ken Marino
Come up with a. The next movie title specific type of candy.
Beck Bennett
Yes.
Ken Marino
An Eartha KitKat.
Beck Bennett
Meow. Oh, somebody's in. He.
Ken Marino
When my cat would. Yeah. When my cat would catch an animal.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
Ken Marino
And come and bring the animal to the.
Rochelle
The.
Ken Marino
The back door. Yeah. And want to come in with the animal. Present the animal to us.
David Wain
Bird.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, bird.
Ken Marino
It would go.
Beck Bennett
Wow, that is.
Kyle Mooney
That does sound like.
Ken Marino
Yeah.
David Wain
I needed to pause and double check something. Oh, they're going to CGI that. So we look like cats.
Ken Marino
Yeah.
David Wain
Okay. Yeah.
Beck Bennett
Okay. Like right now in this video, our faces are cats.
Ken Marino
Just cat. Is it just a cat mask or is like. Do we have the whole. Is it a whole thing?
Beck Bennett
It's the whole thing.
Ken Marino
How much. What's your.
David Wain
I'm just glad I was born a cat. Meow, meow, meow, meow.
Kyle Mooney
God, why?
Ken Marino
When you do it, it's just. It's really unsettling.
Beck Bennett
I think it's. I think it's.
Kyle Mooney
To me, I feel like you're. You're finding something deep within that is.
Beck Bennett
Something's coming.
David Wain
I'm personally creeped out by it, but I Can't help it. Cuz God is my co pilot.
Beck Bennett
Yes, yes, absolutely. You're. You're a vessel for God and I.
Kyle Mooney
Cats are sexy. That's the thing.
Beck Bennett
Yes, yes, we are sexy.
Rochelle
Be.
Ken Marino
Yes, we are. Meow, meow, meow. We're sexy.
David Wain
James Stewart.
Ken Marino
Hello, you old building and lone. Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow.
Kyle Mooney
The thing is, I re. I stepping out of character.
David Wain
I just. I'm wonder what it would be like if Arnold Schwarzenegger. Okay, okay. Was a cat.
Beck Bennett
All right.
David Wain
What would that sound like?
Ken Marino
Yeah, I wonder.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, I wonder what that would sound like.
Ken Marino
Ar be cat.
Kyle Mooney
Nice.
Ken Marino
Sure. I know you were genuinely like that a lot.
David Wain
And what was that?
Kyle Mooney
Cat.
David Wain
And that.
Ken Marino
Oh, you like that.
Kyle Mooney
Not.
Ken Marino
I said the cat.
Kyle Mooney
I guess I only know that night cat thoughts.
David Wain
I feel like all cats are creepy.
Ken Marino
That's a cat like you would see in Greece that has like three legs. Been inbred like five times.
Beck Bennett
I'm a street cat.
Ken Marino
I live on the str.
Beck Bennett
Pretty good.
Kyle Mooney
That is bad.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Not bad.
Ken Marino
No, very, very good.
Beck Bennett
Crazy.
David Wain
What about a cat that's from New York?
Kyle Mooney
Hey, what are you looking at?
Ken Marino
Meow.
Beck Bennett
Did you have a taxi?
Kyle Mooney
Hey, Caxie.
David Wain
Hey. Ask me where I like to eat in New York.
Ken Marino
Cats is deli.
David Wain
Oh, no. But just do it again.
Ken Marino
I wish you would have said ask
David Wain
me what my favorite deli is.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. What's your favorite deli?
David Wain
Cats. Oh, timing.
Ken Marino
I wish you would.
Kyle Mooney
What's your favorite Broadway. What's your favorite Broadway show?
David Wain
Cats.
Ken Marino
That's great.
David Wain
And who's my favorite account? Jeremy? Cats.
Ken Marino
Cats. Cats and cats.
Kyle Mooney
And who was my favorite pet? What's your favorite pet?
David Wain
Favorite pet? Cats.
Beck Bennett
And what's your favorite food?
David Wain
Cats. Oh, you've script me.
Ken Marino
No, it's cats.
David Wain
No, it's not cats. It's a pasta.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, yeah. Does Al eat cats? No, he eats dogs. So you're kind of doing that.
David Wain
I was going to joke and say my favorite food is Linguini Alfredo, but I'm not going to say it because it's too fat.
Ken Marino
I was. I was going to say.
Beck Bennett
But that's okay.
David Wain
No, I don't want to put that out there.
Kyle Mooney
I was going.
Ken Marino
When you said ask me what my favorite restaurant is, this is what I thought you were going to say, ask me what my favorite.
David Wain
What's your favorite restaurant?
Ken Marino
Luger.
David Wain
Oh, yeah, that is the best.
Beck Bennett
That. That's your favorite.
Kyle Mooney
Peter Luger.
Beck Bennett
Peter Lugers.
Ken Marino
No, that's. I thought that's what he was going to say, cuz. He loves Luger. Do your Luger bit.
David Wain
It's not a bit.
Kyle Mooney
Come on.
Beck Bennett
It's fine if it's not a bit.
Ken Marino
It doesn't have to be environment right here. You don't have to do it.
David Wain
You know, there's some great steak restaurants in New York. Yeah, like what? What could. Any.
Kyle Mooney
Keens is my favorite.
David Wain
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
Any others? I've been to Keens, Johnny?
David Wain
No, guys. Lugers. That's it. That, that is. That is like a total non. Bit that our friend Paul Rudd. Every time we are in a place, he's like, David does this great bit about.
Beck Bennett
Oh, my God.
David Wain
And I'm like, it's. It's not like no one's gonna get it. No one's gonna appreciate it.
Beck Bennett
I feel like anytime that's been teed up like you do a bit in the moment and there are certain circumstances that make it funny. Recently somebody did that to me. They're like, do that, do that, do the guy looking for change. We can't find the thing. And I did it. And people are like, right.
David Wain
It's the worst way to.
Kyle Mooney
But that I laughed.
David Wain
It was the right place.
Kyle Mooney
Smith of Wolensky. That's the other one.
David Wain
It's rarely a good thing when you're like, this guy says something so funny.
Ken Marino
Do it. No, no. Lugers.
David Wain
The other one that he does here, this. This is the other bit that he always makes me do, which is nobody gets.
Ken Marino
Who's this?
David Wain
Our friend Paul Rudd.
Ken Marino
Hold for applause.
Beck Bennett
Yes.
Kyle Mooney
That's actually really cool.
David Wain
So.
Ken Marino
Yeah, it's super cool.
Beck Bennett
That's actually. Yeah, that actually is.
Kyle Mooney
You're actually friends, though.
Ken Marino
Yeah.
David Wain
Remember, in the. In the earlier days of television, there were really only three networks where it was abc, NBC, and. What was the other one? CBS Pharmacy. Let me do take two.
Ken Marino
Okay.
David Wain
There were all these networks in the old days. It was. What was it? ABC and NBC and cbs Pharmacy.
Ken Marino
Oh, also a good environment to do it.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
Ken Marino
Workshop it and I'll just.
David Wain
No, but he'd be like, hey, random person, check out my friend's joke about cbs.
Kyle Mooney
I. I set you up recently for. To do the voice of Ed Edgar from Men in Black.
Beck Bennett
Sure, sure.
Kyle Mooney
Have you guys seen the movie Men in Black?
David Wain
Oh, sure. Meow, meow, meow
Beck Bennett
in that.
David Wain
Yes, I remember. He's all crazy, right? Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
Watch my. Watch my pal Cat over here doing nice impression.
Ken Marino
Street cat is back. Oh, no, that's.
David Wain
What. That's good.
Beck Bennett
Everybody has an idea.
David Wain
I remember that. That was great.
Beck Bennett
Thank you.
Kyle Mooney
And of course, we always like to Do I want to be set up? What's a cat who is in the.
Ken Marino
The.
Kyle Mooney
The Shining and the Last Goodbye.
David Wain
Hey, what does a cat from the Shining and the Last Goodbye sound like?
Ken Marino
Or Two Jakes.
David Wain
Or the Two Jakes.
Ken Marino
Chinatown and Two Jakes.
Kyle Mooney
Is it okay, okay, okay. Give me a second.
David Wain
Oh, I see where he's going.
Ken Marino
I figured out.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
Wouldn't be bad to. To get these whiskers fixed, right?
Beck Bennett
Yeah,
Ken Marino
But it was a really good Jack Nicholson. You stumbled on it, then you attached it to the cat theme and it was really nice.
Kyle Mooney
I really liked it. Thanks.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, yeah, it was really great.
David Wain
What about out? Here's my saucer of milk.
Kyle Mooney
That is a really good chop in
David Wain
your head because that's Jack Nicholson.
Beck Bennett
He's got the.
David Wain
That hairline.
Beck Bennett
I could see the hair slicked back,
David Wain
but I wasn't doing it. I was just doing that.
Ken Marino
I know, but why? You had a fever.
Kyle Mooney
What about this? Hey, Stanley, I hate to say it, I forgot my feline.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, yeah.
David Wain
Good.
Beck Bennett
That's fantastic.
David Wain
Didn't bring his cat to set that day.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. How about something like, okay, you want the cats? You can't handle the cats. I don't know. It's pretty good. I don't know.
David Wain
That is pretty good.
Ken Marino
Good.
David Wain
It reminds me.
Ken Marino
Other than you want the milk. No, but honestly, you can't handle the milk.
David Wain
I swear to God. Other than just like a couple things that you said differently. It reminds me of that Few Good Men monologue that Jack Nicholson did.
Beck Bennett
Oh, sure, yeah.
David Wain
Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
I think that's what he's taking it from.
David Wain
Oh, really?
Kyle Mooney
I think.
Beck Bennett
I think so, but I'm not sure.
David Wain
Okay, cool, Cool, cool, cool. Yeah, that was good. Good.
Beck Bennett
Thank you.
Ken Marino
What do you want me to do with the chicken? I want you to put it in my dinner bowl.
David Wain
Yeah, that reminds me of Five Easy Pieces.
Ken Marino
Yeah, Five Easy Pieces, that's good.
Kyle Mooney
Who else could be like a. Really kind of like. That's not a cat.
David Wain
I would expect Sylvester.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, right.
Ken Marino
Oh, yeah.
Kyle Mooney
Wait, what? The sign. Right.
David Wain
Do you want to know a little trick? I just remembered, Adrian. If you say thuc, T, H, U, C, K, then you can get away with doing a four letter word, but the actual. Sounds like it, but you didn't really say it, so you can't get in trouble.
Ken Marino
That's amazing.
Kyle Mooney
And is. Because. Is there going to be like a. Is there. How naughty is the new movie? Is there going to be like a TV version? Is there a version where like, you say the F word and we could use.
David Wain
I Don't think there's any nudity in it.
Kyle Mooney
There is no nudity.
David Wain
There's no nudity. There's a few. There's a few four letter curses.
Kyle Mooney
So you can replace those for like.
David Wain
Yeah, we will place them before we release it with a good.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, because you regret having the swear words in there.
David Wain
I just forgot.
Ken Marino
Easy, you know, it's easy.
Beck Bennett
It's easy.
Ken Marino
Yeah, it's easy.
Beck Bennett
You make a better choice.
Ken Marino
Yeah, yeah, let's. Let's beat that. Let's beat that.
Beck Bennett
Let's. We don't need to be that.
Kyle Mooney
All right, well, it's time of the show where we. Where we talk about our. I favorite iconic fictional cats. So everybody's, I imagine, has. Has made their decision.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, I'm sure we've all got it locked and loaded. Kyle, do you want to start off or you want to let our guests start. Take this away.
Kyle Mooney
I'll start off and I will say. I'll give a little background. Okay. He's. This. Here's the thing. He's an orange cat, but he's not the orange cat that you think of. He's a little. I've always been sort of into the like.
Ken Marino
Yeah, I know who you're talking about.
Rochelle
About.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, yeah, we all know.
Kyle Mooney
You might. You might see him with, you know, a fish bone or something like that.
Ken Marino
I know who you're talking about.
Beck Bennett
Yep.
Kyle Mooney
Okay, so what do you want me
Beck Bennett
to say or not?
Ken Marino
I don't know. Am I supposed to guess?
David Wain
No, that's not the format. He's going to say his.
Ken Marino
Oh, all right.
Kyle Mooney
No, we can do. We can do it.
Beck Bennett
I thought he was supposed to guess.
Ken Marino
I'm excited cuz I used to collect his. The. The books.
Kyle Mooney
Okay. Ken, who am I. He's clicking.
Ken Marino
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
I didn't know Heathcliff had any books.
Ken Marino
Oh, that. He had tons of them.
Kyle Mooney
I didn't know you collected them.
Ken Marino
Yeah, well, I'm telling you now, this is breaking news.
Kyle Mooney
Without them or.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
Ken Marino
Did you bring them? Still have. I brought them with me. Yeah. They're my. My car. I got all my books that I collected in my car.
Beck Bennett
Amazing.
Ken Marino
And it's.
Beck Bennett
You have all your books that you collect in your car.
Ken Marino
It's mostly Heathcliff.
Beck Bennett
Okay, that's great because I didn't like
Ken Marino
the Garfield as much as the Heathcliff cliff. Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
And what is.
Beck Bennett
Lives in a dump.
Kyle Mooney
We know. Yeah, that's the thing. He just hangs around the junkyard.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Yeah. He's a street cat.
Ken Marino
I don't remember.
Kyle Mooney
I remember the.
Ken Marino
I remember the Fish bones.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah, character. I think he has a fish bone.
Ken Marino
Fish bones. Okay.
Kyle Mooney
What about you, Beck?
Beck Bennett
Oh, what's the. What's the.
Ken Marino
What's the bit here?
Beck Bennett
No, the.
David Wain
We're naming our favorite cats from. From fictional world.
Ken Marino
Oh, got it, got it, got it.
Beck Bennett
It's not a bit.
David Wain
It's not a bit.
Beck Bennett
No, no, no, no, no, no.
Ken Marino
My God, that's not. I didn't mean that.
Beck Bennett
It's not funny.
David Wain
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, Wait.
Kyle Mooney
Sorry, who, me talking or what?
Ken Marino
Huh?
Kyle Mooney
Heathcliff stuff was not a bit. What are we saying? Are you about to be very sincere?
Beck Bennett
That's what the. What the bit was.
Kyle Mooney
Oh, yeah. This is not a bit.
David Wain
No, it's not a bit.
Beck Bennett
What did I.
Kyle Mooney
Did I say bit?
Beck Bennett
Yeah, he said, what's the bit?
Kyle Mooney
Oh, no, no, no. This is a part of our show. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Ken Marino
No, no, I didn't mean it.
Kyle Mooney
It's all good.
Ken Marino
Oh, my God.
David Wain
Be respectful.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Beck Bennett
Okay, okay. For a second, I was like, okay,
Ken Marino
don't forget messed up.
Kyle Mooney
To meowy Christmas and a meowy year.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, no. Happy meow year.
Ken Marino
Happy new Meow.
David Wain
What's your entry in this one? Meow. Meow.
Beck Bennett
Mine is. It's got to be Mr. Mustofeles.
David Wain
Oh, great.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
I love Mr.
Kyle Mooney
He's. Go ahead, please.
Beck Bennett
No, no, he's just wonderful. The way he moves and sings. He's very important. He's got a lot of stature. He's an important cat.
David Wain
I like that. He's important, too.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, yeah. Mr. Mustafa.
Kyle Mooney
But he also, like.
Ken Marino
He's the presence.
Kyle Mooney
The assumption is that he's magical, but maybe he's not actually that.
Ken Marino
Isn't he an alien? Or is that the sweet transvestite?
Beck Bennett
That's.
Ken Marino
And Rocky Horror. Isn't the. Isn't the sweet transvestite an alien?
David Wain
The. About.
Beck Bennett
I don't know. No, I. I don't. I don't. I actually don't know.
Kyle Mooney
Mr. Mestophiles is from cats.
Ken Marino
Yeah, but I. But they came from space, too, right?
David Wain
Nope.
Kyle Mooney
Maybe none of them.
Ken Marino
What is that big thing at the end where they come down?
David Wain
They're having fun.
Ken Marino
They're just having fun.
Kyle Mooney
Well, they're trying to become Jellicoe cats, so maybe that's. When they become Jellicoe cats.
David Wain
They go to heaven.
Ken Marino
They go to heaven. Or there's a space.
David Wain
No, space.
Ken Marino
Aliens. Cat aliens.
Beck Bennett
I. You know, we can. We can do a rewatch.
Ken Marino
That would be not.
Beck Bennett
Well, yeah, I guess we don't. Really have the time. But yeah, Mr. Mistoffeles is.
Ken Marino
He's. He's your favorite.
Beck Bennett
He's my favorite.
Ken Marino
That's not a bit. That's the. That's the genuine truth.
Beck Bennett
No joke. What are you guys favorite cats?
David Wain
This is a. This was a. Originally in the movies version played by Keanu Reeves. And it's John Wick, he's a dangerous cat.
Beck Bennett
Oh, so wait, you're saying that in John Wick it was originally a cat?
David Wain
No, I'm saying he's like a.
Kyle Mooney
He's a cat.
Beck Bennett
Like, oh, he's a cool cat.
Kyle Mooney
He's a dangerous cat.
Beck Bennett
And that does that. That counts.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah, it's great.
David Wain
Thanks, Ken. How about you?
Beck Bennett
Well, I think I know what you're gonna pick, but go ahead.
Ken Marino
Oh, you do?
Beck Bennett
I don't know.
Rochelle
Let's see.
Ken Marino
There's a couple. It's a sort of a tie. There's, you know, of course, great comic duo, Tom and Jerry.
Kyle Mooney
Yep.
Ken Marino
You gotta get. You gotta give props to Tom.
David Wain
You gotta do it, you gotta do it. Customary thing. We know it, we do it, you know.
Ken Marino
OG.
Beck Bennett
Oh, gee.
Ken Marino
Yeah, right. And then there's that, there's that goddamn commercial. Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow meow. And that, that's a tender vittles cat.
Beck Bennett
Tender vittles.
Kyle Mooney
Great.
David Wain
I feel like I'm choice.
Beck Bennett
That's a good choice. Cuz that is iconic.
Ken Marino
Iconic. It's like, where's the beef of cat of cats.
Kyle Mooney
Yes, absolutely.
Beck Bennett
And there's the. What's the dog one? The. Yeah, yeah.
Kyle Mooney
I don't know. Begging strips.
David Wain
Yeah.
Beck Bennett
Bacon strips.
Ken Marino
Oh, yeah.
Beck Bennett
And he goes, oh, is it me or does.
David Wain
You're watching the show. And they cut the commercial. They come back and then you. Almost two minutes later, they cut the commercial again. How many ads do we have to watch?
Ken Marino
It's not you. It's not you.
Beck Bennett
It's not.
Ken Marino
That is what is happening.
Beck Bennett
You tapped into something here that's actually
Kyle Mooney
really interesting to think about.
David Wain
Yeah, it is really interesting.
Beck Bennett
Why so many commercials?
Kyle Mooney
Well, I think it's. I think it's this corporate. It's like.
Ken Marino
I don't know, I. You know.
Kyle Mooney
You agree with.
David Wain
Well, half the time I feel like a lot of these corporations are in it just to. To make money, I think, you know.
Ken Marino
You think they. Well, maybe.
David Wain
Maybe some of them are anyway.
Ken Marino
Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
I mean, some of them are legitimately
Beck Bennett
trying to help us.
Kyle Mooney
Some of it's funny.
Rochelle
Sure.
Ken Marino
Some of it's very funny.
Kyle Mooney
Begging strips is funny.
Beck Bennett
I watch. Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
Yes. So sometimes it's entertaining. I'm like, okay, I'm okay with a little break. You're right. Sometimes I'm like, I don't need this shit stuffed down my throat.
David Wain
I've seen it. So help me God. My buddy and I were watching a movie the other night.
Ken Marino
Which guy? Which buddy?
David Wain
Scott.
Ken Marino
Okay.
David Wain
And some dad comes on for some. I don't know, some medicine. Who cares? It doesn't matter. It's not important to the story, you know? Keep watching the movie and watching. Watching. Watch the movie like we do. Just watch the movie. Next ad comes on.
Ken Marino
You and Scott loved it.
David Wain
The commercial break comes on the same ad. They play it again.
Kyle Mooney
What the hell?
David Wain
During this same movie. So help me God.
Ken Marino
Why are you so upset about it?
David Wain
I don't. I'm not upset about it.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. What made you think he was upset about it?
David Wain
Yeah.
Ken Marino
Well, he pounded his fist on the emphasis.
Kyle Mooney
I. I'm with Ken. It seemed like there was genuine frustration.
Ken Marino
Yeah, I got it.
David Wain
No, I thought it was a great. I'm really excited about it.
Beck Bennett
Just a master.
Ken Marino
That's your excitement. That's how you get.
David Wain
Oh, my God.
Ken Marino
I'm so happy you like seeing commercials. The same commercial place.
David Wain
Nothing gets me more horny, honestly.
Ken Marino
Oh, and then what's your favorite part about being horny?
David Wain
Just the ongoing feeling of it.
Ken Marino
Yeah. But then that little. That one little part, maybe.
David Wain
No, not anymore.
Ken Marino
No.
Kyle Mooney
Oh, it's changed.
David Wain
It's changed because now I'm a cat.
Beck Bennett
Well, that was an incredible exploration on cats, as it always is.
Kyle Mooney
As we always. Yeah, we always have. I really feel it's.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, I really.
Kyle Mooney
It's always a great time with. With you. It's always beck. Catnip.
Beck Bennett
It's always. And I'm feeling feline fine. Sitting here with you, talking about cats with our guests, it was a really.
Ken Marino
Well, you.
Kyle Mooney
We definitely spun an interesting tale.
Beck Bennett
Very good.
David Wain
Think about this tail. Like, cat tail.
Ken Marino
I hope you do that.
Beck Bennett
I hope you do this shit. That was amazing.
Kyle Mooney
I hope.
Beck Bennett
You didn't even realize you did that. That.
David Wain
Here comes.
Ken Marino
I hope you guys do this show forever.
Beck Bennett
Yes, that would be perfect. For sure, for sure, for sure.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah, they're all.
Ken Marino
It's all.
Kyle Mooney
It's all hilarious ass puns.
Beck Bennett
That's. Yeah, that's. If you didn't catch it. We're, like, doing some cat puns here.
David Wain
Okay. Okay. Can I try one then?
Beck Bennett
Yeah, Give it a bang one out.
David Wain
I hope that the. We Have a good time on the When. Next time we have the. This episode.
Kyle Mooney
That's fucking amazing.
Beck Bennett
I don't. What do you. What's amazing to you? Because I feel like you're just blowing smoke up his ass.
Kyle Mooney
No, no, that's like the David Wayne.
David Wain
Yeah, I'm not sure if I 100%
Ken Marino
get the bit yet, but he's, he's, he's supporting you.
David Wain
Okay. Thank you. Yeah, yeah. He loved Pretty Funny.
Beck Bennett
That was amazing, David. That was fantastic.
Kyle Mooney
Thanks for.
Beck Bennett
Thanks for coming by the guy.
Kyle Mooney
Thanks for still doing what you guys do after all these years.
David Wain
Oh, yeah.
Beck Bennett

David Wain
meow meow meow meow Merry meow meow meow.
Kyle Mooney
That was great.
Beck Bennett
That was a fantastic. That was one of the best podcasts. I mean, and I do say this every time. Every time. That was one of the best podcasts.
David Wain
Just to underline how much. How sincere I am. I do say this every time.
Beck Bennett
And every time I'm totally sincere.
David Wain
By the way, the cat character that we saw before, he's gone now. And David is back.
Beck Bennett
David's back. A little less horny than before.
David Wain
No, no, no. Yeah. That was just me playing my character. Now I'm back.
Kyle Mooney
I want to take some. I feel like I. I fucked up in one way or another.
Beck Bennett
No way, dude. You were absolutely perfect.
Kyle Mooney
The banana peel thing, I didn't know where I was going. You're gonna know.
Ken Marino
The cat likes to play with, like, toys and she's a banana peel.
Beck Bennett
Everybody knows cats play with banana peels.
Ken Marino
Yeah, that's a. That's a given. Chance to set the tone, but just brutal honesty.
David Wain
Yeah, you did fuck up, but, you know, you move. You gotta get back on the horse.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, you have to get back on the horse. You have to keep.
Kyle Mooney
Thanks for being.
David Wain
And it wasn't. It wasn't like it didn't kill it. So. So what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
Beck Bennett
Exactly. You.
Kyle Mooney
And we found some really interesting things. I think about some of the cat stuff we did was really, really good.
David Wain
Really, really, really good.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, really, really good.
Kyle Mooney
So, like, it's a trade off.
Ken Marino
I would. I mean, I don't want to go against the grain, but I would say it was really, really, really good.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, I mean, that's.
David Wain
I just think. I mean, the question is, like, how many vertical clips are we gonna squeeze out of that? I'm gonna say 10.
Beck Bennett
I would. I honestly I would like to pump out 10 clips in a. Within a week.
Ken Marino
I would say.
Kyle Mooney
Are you guys meow.
Beck Bennett
I will tell you perfect pun.
David Wain
There's nothing I like more than just sitting down and just pumping out clips.
Beck Bennett
Oh I know.
Ken Marino
Here we go.
David Wain
I love content.
Beck Bennett
Content reclipping. Same clip just a year. Six every six months. Take it down. Re.
David Wain
Upload it. Yes. Yes.
Beck Bennett
As if it's new. Well you guys can count on us for that. It was great sitting down with you guys. Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
Truly such a pleasure.
Beck Bennett
Really was incredible. You guys have always feeling is mutual.
Kyle Mooney
The movie is out now.
David Wain
We're big fans of you guys.
Beck Bennett
Thank you. We're huge fan big. I. I'm going to say bigger fans which is fine. I'm. But I. I can say we're bigger fans of yours.
David Wain
Let's leave it at that.
Beck Bennett
But we've looked up to you for so long. You continue to honestly continue to be.
David Wain
We're still going.
Beck Bennett
I know. That's what I'm saying. With what you continue to do.
Ken Marino
It's like crazy after all. Yes.
Beck Bennett
I feel like if we can still.
Ken Marino
Crazy.
Beck Bennett
You got those pipes.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah. I like the.
David Wain
He's the lead singer of the band.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. You could see more of that middle aged dad
Ken Marino

Beck Bennett
That's what I'm to going.
Ken Marino
Going with. I just did.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
Ken Marino
Okay.
Kyle Mooney
Sorry. That's.
Ken Marino
That's what I thought.
Kyle Mooney
Crazy.
Ken Marino
And I do the.
David Wain
What is wrong with you?
Beck Bennett
I do the right after he did.
Ken Marino
I do the Tender Vittle's Cat Meow song and that's it.
Beck Bennett
And then so crazy.
David Wain
I know you're joking but Billy Eilish does do warm ups before each show.
Beck Bennett
Yeah, I know you're joking but Billie Eilish.
Ken Marino
Yeah. I was joking.
Beck Bennett
Kyle. Is there anything else you have to add besides.
Kyle Mooney
No. Check out the movie. It's always. It's always great to be around Ueck. I feel like we're starting to get the hang of this.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. We're starting to get the hang of.
Kyle Mooney
It's tough when there's. It's intimidating when you know, heroes come on.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. We would have been much better together if they weren't here is what you're trying to say.
Ken Marino
You know what?
David Wain
I got to say something. We do not wake up in the morning being like, hey, we're heroes. Every day. Most days.
Ken Marino
Yeah, most. But not every day.
Beck Bennett
But I wake up thinking that you guys are.
Kyle Mooney
But you. I want you to. I want you to keep that back here knowing that that is the reality.
David Wain
Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Beck Bennett
Just back here somewhere. Just keep it back.
David Wain
Just. I'm going to throw a bone. Not a bone. Just a. I'm going to throw something in your guys direction.
Ken Marino
Yeah. Would better not be a bone.
David Wain
Could Ken and I come back sometime?
Beck Bennett
Absolutely.
David Wain
Okay.
Beck Bennett
We would love that.
David Wain
That was. That was what I was going to. That was what I was doing.
Beck Bennett
We'd love to have you back. We can. We can grow and build.
Kyle Mooney
Yeah, that wouldn't be a problem. Ken Marino and David Wayne, come back to our podcast. Sure, David.
Beck Bennett
Yeah.
Kyle Mooney
You can just stop by whenever you get the chance. We're about to have them on for a second time.
Beck Bennett
Yeah. Okay.
Kyle Mooney
We'll talk to the producers. Rochelle, we can go ahead and get in touch with somebody. We'll let you know.
Ken Marino
I don't believe him.
Beck Bennett
Kyle's bursting through. Kyle, your pants. Dude, you're soaking wet again.
Kyle Mooney

Guests: Ken Marino & David Wain
Podcast Network: Headgum
This episode features comedy legends Ken Marino and David Wain (The State, Wet Hot American Summer, Role Models) in a classic, winding, bit-heavy conversation with hosts Beck Bennett and Kyle Mooney (ex-SNL, Good Neighbor). True to the show’s non-format, the group explores absurd bits (including a full-on “cat podcast”), comedic process talk, showbiz memories, and self-referential jokes. The heart of the episode is the creative partnership of Marino and Wain, their process for writing movies, their musical “dad jam band,” and their just-released film, Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass.
This episode captures everything that makes What’s Our Podcast? a strange, rewarding listen: improvisational chaos, sudden meaningful reflection, guest-fueled creativity, and loving parody of both the podcast format and comedy itself. The conversation between hosts and guests is packed with quotable moments, genuine inside-baseball geekery about comedy, and ridiculous escalating bits (from legendary MTV stories to literal cat puns). For long-time fans of The State, Wet Hot American Summer, or alt-comedy in general, this is a warm celebration of the genre—and a rare, substantive peek into how classic comedy partnerships keep evolving after decades in the game.
