Trusty Narrator
Hey, smarty pants. Have you ever been to a live show? You know, where you sit in the audience, probably next to your parents or a trusted adult and watch someone perform on stage? Maybe it was a musical, or your favorite singer in concert, or a sporting event. Or maybe you got to see some live magic and when it was over, chances are you clapped to show your appreciation. It sounds like a lot of you smarty pants have been to a live performance. But for those of you who haven't, today's your lucky day. I've got a few extra tickets to the Flamingo Club and the hottest show in town.
Frankie Flamingo
Welcome to Frankie Flamingo's Flying Flammaganza. Starring Frankie Flamingo.
Trusty Narrator
That's right, smarty pants. Not only do you get to go to a live show, you're going to see a flamingo. Host one. Smartypants, have you ever seen a flamingo in real life? I've only seen plastic flamingos on my neighbor's lawn. Does that count? Quick, flamingo facts. Flamingos can be found all over the world. Anywhere there's warm, shallow water, lakes, swamps, lagoons, sandy islands. Ooh. Flamingos especially love the tropics. Who doesn't, smarty pants? Close your eyes and think of a flamingo. What are you picturing? Probably a long, skinny bird, that's. What color did you say pink? Yep. It's pretty hard to miss a five foot tall bird that looks like it's covered in frosting. As for the rest of a flamingo, you're probably imagining a long curvy neck like a swan, skinny stick legs and funny knees, kind of like a stork. What about flamingo feet? That's right. Flamingos have webbed feet like a duck. That's a pretty odd mix of features, wouldn't you say? For the longest time, scientists didn't know where to classify this bird.
Frankie Flamingo
Listen, pal, I'm in a class of my own.
Trusty Narrator
That's right. Flamingos are the sole members of the family Phoenicopteridae. Imagine that, an entire family for just six species of flamingo and. Wait a minute. Frankie Flamingo?
Frankie Flamingo
Yeah, what's it to you?
Trusty Narrator
I'm like your biggest fan. I sing Fly Me to the Lagoon every morning in the shower.
Frankie Flamingo
I didn't need that image in my head, but okay, kid, nice to know ya. Now, what's that you were saying about my funny knees?
Trusty Narrator
I didn't mean anything by it, Frankie. I was just.
Frankie Flamingo
It's okay, pal, I get it. You haven't been around anyone as cool, as flashy as Pink, right? What I'm saying is I don't let too much bug me. After all, you don't get to be the national bird of the Bahamas by sweating the small stuff. So, here to see the show?
Trusty Narrator
I am. But I was also hoping to learn more about flamingos.
Frankie Flamingo
Like what?
Trusty Narrator
Like why do flamingos stand on one leg? Why are they pink? Can you really see flamingo dance teams in the wild? And do people really eat flamingo poop?
Frankie Flamingo
You like the gross stuff. I see me.
Trusty Narrator
I'm neutral. But the smarty pants seem to like it, so.
Frankie Flamingo
Hey, if the smarty pants wants a show, let's give them a show.
Trusty Narrator
It's time for another whiff of science and history on who Smarted. Who's smarted? Who's smart?
Frankie Flamingo
Is it you? Is it me?
Trusty Narrator
Is it science or history? Listen up, everyone. We make smarting lots of fun.
Frankie Flamingo
But who's smart?
Trusty Narrator

We're in the front row of Frankie Flamingo's star studded review. Look at all those feathers on stage. Oh, boy, it's starting.
Frankie Flamingo
Welcome, young old people, birds, and especially smarty pants. Do I got something special for you. Last week, we had a rat pack. But not everyone loves rodents. So tonight I brought in some flappers that can really soar.
Trusty Narrator
Ooh, Smarty pants. Do you know what a group of flamingos are called? Just like we refer to animals, such As a pride of lions or a swarm of bees. What do you think we call a gathering of flamingos? Is it A, a flock, B, a flammarion, or C, a flamboyance?
Frankie Flamingo
Welcome to the stage Frankie and his flamboyance.
Trusty Narrator
Yep, two or more flamingos make a flamboyance pretty fitting because these birds just love attention. Oh, they're starting to dance. The tallest male in the flamboyance is standing very straight. Oh, and he's stretching his neck out. Come on, smarty pants, let's join him. Put your chin up as high as it can go. Now start swaying your neck back and forth to the beat. This is called head flagging. Guess how many dance routines flamingos know. Is it 10? 50? 100? More? Believe it or not, smarty pants, flamingos can bust out 136 combinations of dance moves on the floor.
Frankie Flamingo
Whoa.
Trusty Narrator
But they typically stick to nine signature steps. This head swaying one of the large males is doing is a favorite. The goal is to convince the rest of the group to join him. Keep head flagging, smartypants. Let's see if you can get anyone to join you. And unlike peacocks, where the flashy male is the only bird to dance, both male and female flamingos love a dance party. They're especially great at marching. Try it.
Frankie Flamingo
Alright. What a number. Hey, how do I look? Dino, bring me a mirror.
Trusty Narrator
Ooh, I have a mirror. Frankie.
Frankie Flamingo
You're very prepared, trusty narrator. I like that. Let's take a look. I think something's wrong with your mirror, pal.
Trusty Narrator
Ah, smarty pants. True or false? Flamingos can recognize their own reflection. If you said true, you're wrong. While some rare birds do recognize their reflections, flamingos are not one of them. When they peer into a mirror, they think they're seeing another flamingo.
Frankie Flamingo
Who's this guy looking at? And what's with his funny knees? Anyway, time for my next number. For this one, I'll be singing on one leg. Flamingos in the night do dooby doo doo Flamingos in the night.
Trusty Narrator
Wow. Frankie makes singing on one leg look so good. How long can you balance on one leg, smarty pants? Go ahead. If you have room and a safe place to try it, I'll try too. Okay, I've got my left leg planted on the floor. I'm slowly lifting my right leg and yes, I'm doing it. This isn't so. Wow. I can barely stand on one leg for five seconds. How about you, smarty pants? Well, that's pretty good. Those of you still standing on one Leg. But guess what? Flamingos can balance on one leg for up to four hours. But how?
Frankie Flamingo
Practice. Seriously. It comes down to how we're built. You know how you were ribbing me about my funny knees earlier? I got news for you, pal. Yeah, Those aren't my knees. True, I got legs for days, but those knobs you're talking about, that ain't them.
Trusty Narrator
Smarty pants. What do you think the middle part of a flamingo's leg is? If it's not a knee, is it A, a claw, B, a toe, or C, an ankle? Did you say C an ankle?
Frankie Flamingo
Nice going, kid. I actually have an upper leg bone positioned horizontally, hidden among my fabulous feathers. My real knee connects that bone to the long, skinny part. I stand on. My ankle, which is that bumpy bit is a joint that locks my foot into place.
Trusty Narrator
So if your ankle is in the middle, the lower half of your leg is a giant foot.
Frankie Flamingo
That's the ticket. It's very hard to find shoes my size. If you're still confused, think of it as I'm always walking around on tippy toes.
Trusty Narrator
Okay, but I gotta ask. Just because you can stand on one leg, why do it? Isn't it easier to stand on two legs?
Frankie Flamingo
Nah. When I pick up one leg, my body leans forward and my center of gravity pushes down on that leg from the front. Meaning I'm perfectly balanced. While you might have trouble standing on one leg and not falling, it's only natural for me. It actually takes me more effort to stand like you two legged pros. I can even sleep this way.
Trusty Narrator
Speaking of sleeping, I heard a little old lady snoring in the front row.
Frankie Flamingo
Whoa, we're losing the crowd. We gotta get the next act on stage. Alright, ladies and gents, smarties and pants. Weighing in at 3 ounces, this chick wasn't born yesterday, but she did hatch a month ago. Introducing the one and only Ms. Flinglet.
Trusty Narrator
Oh, she's so fuzzy and cute. Smarty pants. True or false. Flamingos are born pink. The answer, surprisingly, is false. Flamingos are not born pink. They're actually a dullish gray color. But it doesn't take away from how adorable she is.
Frankie Flamingo
Yep, it's gonna take three to five years, but she'll turn pink alright. Just like this fresh shrimp we're serving tonight. Trust me, it's the best in town.
Trusty Narrator
Ooh, I haven't had shrimp in a while. Nom nom, nom, nom, nom. This isn't just shrimp, is it?
Frankie Flamingo
Actually, what you got on your plate is a nice mix of Shrimp, tasty algae, a dash of larvae.
Trusty Narrator
No offense, but do you think I could have just shrimp?
Frankie Flamingo
Hey, I get it. Flamingos love shrimp. We eat a ton of it.
Trusty Narrator
That's interesting. Cause shrimp turn pink when they're cooked. And flamingos turn pink as they get older. Hey, wait a sec, smarty pants. True or false. Flamingos turn pink because of what they eat.
Frankie Flamingo
The answer is right after this quick break.
Trusty Narrator

Could it be because of what they eat?
Frankie Flamingo
The answer, my friends, is true. The shrimp we eat is full of something called carotenoids.
Trusty Narrator
Aha. Carotenoids are pigments in plants, bacteria, and algae. And yes, carrots contain carotenoids. Although you don't have to worry about turning orange by eating too many carrots.
Frankie Flamingo
You'd have to eat massive amounts over the span of your lifetime for that to happen. But that's what flamingos do when it comes to shrimp. After living on shrimp for years, our bodies metabolize or absorb the pigments. Our feathers, legs, beaks, everything comes up pink.
Trusty Narrator
Wow. That's pretty wild.
Frankie Flamingo
Oh, but there's wilder. For the real Showstopper, there's our poo poo platter. Bring it over, fellas.
Trusty Narrator
Yikes. Is that what I think it is? Smarty pants, I need you to get me out of this. I don't want to offend Frankie, but there's no way I'm eating flamingo poop.
Frankie Flamingo
Made fresh this morning, served on a silver platter.
Trusty Narrator
Oh, wow. I can't. I mean, it doesn't look bad. It's actually quite pretty. They look like bright pink pellets.
Frankie Flamingo
Eat up, pal.
Trusty Narrator
Um, I don't think I have a choice here. Alright, smarty pants, this is it. Wait. It tastes like chocolate.
Frankie Flamingo
What did you think it was? You didn't think I'd serve you actual. Oh, trusty narrator, you have some imagination. Not to mention, flamingos do not poop pink.
Trusty Narrator
Am I ever relieved because this is delicious.
Frankie Flamingo
Flamingo poop is a type of candy mostly sold in Florida. They range from minty malted milk balls to chocolate covered sunflower seeds. As long as it's shelled with a pink candy coating, you've got yourself some tasty flamingo poop. Now, if you'll excuse me, I got a show to close. And through it all, I stood tall on one leg and did it the smarty way.
Trusty Narrator
