Back with another round of Smarty Q where you ask the questions and I answer them. Today we've got snakes, rockets, tangled hair, and daydreaming, so let's jump right in. Our first question comes from Margo, who asks, how do rattlesnakes rattle their tails? That is a great question, Margot. The first cool thing to know is rattlesnakes don't shake their tails against something to make that sound. Nope, the rattle is built right into the tail. At the end of a rattlesnake's tail are a bunch of hollow, dry segments made of keratin, the same material your fingernails are made of. Every time the snake sheds its skin, it adds a new segment to its rattle. When the snake vibrates its tail super fast, sometimes up to 90 times per second, those segments bump into each other and create that buzzing, rattling sound. And here's an extra cool fact. Rattlesnakes don't use their rattle to attack. They use it as a warning. It's basically saying, hey, I'm down here. Please back away. Our next question comes from Grayson, who asks how much 3D printing material is used per year? Oof. That's a big modern question. 3D printing is being used more and more every year to make toys, tools, car parts, medical devices, and even houses. Because it's growing so fast, it's a little tricky to give an exact number, but experts estimate hundreds of thousands of tons of 3D printing materials. Things like plastic, rosin and Metal powders are used around the world each year, and that number keeps increasing as more industries start using 3D printing to build things faster and more efficiently. Okay, Question three comes from Gregory P. Who asks why do dogs chase balls and cats chase laser pointer dots? Ah yes, the classic pet behavior question. Dogs chase balls because it taps into their natural instincts. Long ago, dogs ancestors hunted animals that ran away quickly. So when a ball is thrown, their brain says, that thing is moving. Go get it. Dogs have also been trained by humans for generations to fetch so many of them actually enjoy bringing the ball back too. Cats, on the other hand, are hunters of small, fast moving prey like mice and insects. When they see a laser pointer dot zipping around, it triggers that same hunting instinct. Their brain is basically saying, tiny moving thing, must catch it. The funny part? Cats can get a little confused because they can never actually catch the laser dot. But whether it's a dog chasing a ball or a cat chasing a dot, it all comes down to instincts and the thrill of the chase. All right, three questions down, more coming up, including why your hair gets tangled. We'll get to that right after this quick break and a word from our advertisers. Attention smarty parents.
