Question 1 why is a hamburger called a hamburger? A It was invented using ham. B it was named after the city of Hamburg, Germany. Or C it was named after a famous chef named Harry Berger. If you picked B, you're off to a well seasoned start. Smarty pants. The name hamburger comes from Hamburg, Germany, where a style of seasoned ground beef became famous even though the name includes the word ham. Traditional hamburgers are usually made with beef, not ham. Question 2 why is ground beef usually cooked to a higher temperature than a steak? A. Ground beef can mix bacteria through the meat during grinding. B It cooks faster than steak or c it contains more water than steak. If you said A, that is a well done answer. When beef is ground, any bacteria that was on the outside of the meat can get mixed throughout the patty. That's why hamburgers should be cooked thoroughly to a specific temperature to help make them safe to eat. You're cooking up some great answers, smarty pants. Question 3 why does a hamburger shrink while it's cooking? Is it A the grill presses it down, B the bun squeezes it smaller, or C fat melts and water evaporates from the meat if you picked C. Great job, smarty pants. As a hamburger cooks, some of the fat melts and some of the water inside the meat evaporates. That's why the patty gets a little smaller while cooking. Question 4 why does the outside of a hamburger turn brown when it's cooked? Is it because a heat causes a chemical reaction that creates new flavors and colors, B the meat absorbs the smoke like a sponge, or C the burger changes color because the fat freezes? When a hamburger cooks over high heat, a chemical reaction between proteins and natural sugars creates the delicious brown crust and savory flavors.
