Hello smartypants. Welcome to Trusty Trivia. Today, we're learning about one of nature's most powerful forces, wildfires. Wildfires can change forests, grasslands, and even entire ecosystems. And while they can be dangerous, they can also play an important role in nature. So let's find out how before we spark today's trivia, let's give a blazing shout out to Smarty pants Emma in High Point, North Carolina. Thanks for laughing and learning with us. Alright, Smartypants, let's see if you can heat up with today's first question. Question 1 what is the most common natural cause of wildfires? Is it A lightning, B volcanoes, or C earthquakes? If you picked A, you're off to a bright start, smarty pants. Lightning is the most common natural cause of wildfires. When lightning strikes dry trees or grasses, it can ignite a fire, especially during hot, dry weather. Question 2 which three things must be present for a wildfire to burn? Is it A smoke, water and wind? B heat, fuel and oxygen, or C trees, dirt and sunshine? If you pick B, you're fired up for the right answer. Every fire needs three heat, fuel, and oxygen. Scientists call this the fire triangle. Take away any one of those three and the fire cannot keep burning. You're doing a great job, smarty pants. Keep those brains blazing. We're just getting warmed up. We'll be right back with more Trusty Trivia after this quick word from our sponsors. Welcome back. So far, we've learned what causes wildfires and discovered the three ingredients every fire needs to burn. Now let's explore how people can help prevent wildfires and protect forests for future Generations. Which action can help prevent human caused wildfires? Is it A, completely putting out campfires before leaving them? B, leaving a campfire to burn out on its own, or C throwing a water bottle near the fire instead of putting it? If you picked A, you've sparked the right answer, smarty pants. One of the best ways to prevent wildfires is to completely extinguish campfires with water, stir the ashes and make sure everything is cool to the touch before leaving. With the help of an adult, a fire that looks out can still contain hot embers that may start a wildfire. Question 4 Some forests depend on wildfires because they A turn all the trees into ash forever, B help recycle nutrients into the soil and make room for new plants to grow C. Stop all animals from returning. If you picked B, you've grown your wildfire knowledge. In many forests, low intensity wildfires return nutrients to the soil, clear away dead plants and create space for new trees and wildflowers to grow. Some ecosystems have depended on this natural cycle for thousands of years. You're doing an incredible job, smarty pants. You've weathered the heat, learned about forests, and now there's one final challenge ahead. But first, let's take one last quick break for a word from our sponsors. Welcome back. Today, we've discovered that wildfires are powerful natural events that can shape forests, help certain plants grow, and and remind us how weather and people can affect the environment. Now, let's finish strong with one final question. Why do firefighters and forest managers sometimes use controlled burns, also called prescribed fires, meaning they intentionally start a wildfire? Do they do this because A they want to permanently stop all wildfires from ever happening in a forest? B they do it to encourage every type of tree to grow faster. C or C they do this to safely remove extra dry vegetation that could fuel a larger wildfire if you picked C. Great job, smarty pants. A controlled burn is a carefully planned fire set by trained professionals under safe conditions. By removing dry grasses, leaves, fallen branches, and other fuel, prescribed fires make it harder for future wildfires to grow into large destructive fires. They can also help recycle nutrients into the soil and create healthier habitats for many plants and animals. You really lit up today's trivia, smarty pants. Fantastic job exploring the science behind one of nature's most powerful forces.
