D
Psst.
C
Hey, smarty pants. I'll give you one guess where I am. But first, a hint. It's the place that makes my favorite food in the whole wide world.
A
Oh, you're at your grandma's for meat cake? Nope.
C
I said my favorite food, not the food that haunted my childhood and continues to haunt me to this day. Hey, besides, it's not a house. It's a little store.
A
Or shop.
C
Or a restaurant. So, do you know where I am, smarty pants?
A
Hey, Trusty, you here to pick up those five pies you ordered?
C
That's right, Sal.
A
Wait, you're getting meat pies instead of meat cake?
C
What? No, Grandma, not meat pies. Pizza pies. Smarty pants. Did you guess I was at a pizzeria? Of course you did, because you know I love pizza.
A
Nom, nom, nom, nom, nom.
C
But hold on a second. I think you made a mistake, Sal, I ordered five pizza pies. There's six here.
A
Yeah, yeah, yeah. We're doing a special order. Five pies, get a six, one free. It's a special surprise pie just for you.
C
Oh, today's my lucky day. I can't wait to see what this special pizza pie is.
A
I know.
C
I got two plain, one pepperoni, one sausage and peppers, one meatball. End. This must be the special One. I can't wait to see what it is. Um, Sal?
A
Yeah?
C
Um, this pizza pie has broccoli on it.
A
Sorry, Trusty, I gotta take this call. Sal's Pizza, what can I get you? Oh, boy.
C
I don't want to sound ungrateful, but I've never had broccoli on my pizza before. I mean, sure, it could be worse. It could be pineapples, but still, broccoli on pizza.
D
Hey, don't knock it till you try it, Trusty. Broccoli pizza is delicious. Even better, it's full of vitamins and minerals. And trust me, you could definitely use some more minerals in your diet.
A
Whoa.
C
Who said that?
D
Me. Down here. The broccoli pizza.
C
Ah, yes, of course. On who's smart. And it would be more surprising if my pizza didn't talk to me.
D
That's right. So, you gonna take a nice big mineral filled bite of me?
C
Um, I might want to start with some of these other pies first. But I will say, you do have me curious about these minerals you speak of. After all, smarty pants, what exactly are minerals? What do they do? Which foods contain minerals? And why do you need to eat them?
D
Great questions. I think I can help with that. And then you can eat me.
A
Perfect.
C
It sounds like it's time for another whiff of saucy science and healthy history.
A
On who smarted. Who's smarted? Who's smart? Is it you? Is it me? Is it science or history? Listen up, everyone. We make smarting lots of fun. On who smarted.
C
Hang in there, smarty pants. We'll be right back with who Smarted after this quick ad break and a word from our sponsors.
A

Now back to who Smarted? Okay, talking Broccoli Pizza. Let's start off with a basic question I'm sure many smarty pants are thinking right now. What are minerals? Are they A, substances that are naturally formed in the earth, B, a special type of food, or C, the same as a vitamin?
D
Well, if you said A, substances that are naturally formed in the earth, nice job.
C
Cool, cool. But wait, aren't minerals something found in rocks?
D
Yes, as I said, minerals are something you find in the earth. And all rocks are made of a mixture of minerals. Cool, cool.
C
But I gotta ask. Is it really healthy to be eating rocks?
A
Unga bunga me caveman. Me eat rocks for minerals. Ow. Minerals. Good for body, bad for teeth.
D
Okay, okay, hold on. Two things. One, I am not saying that you should eat rocks. In fact, that would be a terrible idea. And two, while all rocks are made up of minerals, some some foods also contain small amounts of minerals. And those are what you should eat.
A
Oh, Grog, make horrible mistake. From now on, me only eat foods with minerals. Food tastes much better than rock. Ow. Me still need to see dentist.
C
Alright, so obviously we're talking about minerals you find in foods. But the next question is, why do you need minerals? Smartypants, what do you think? Do minerals A help your body grow and stay healthy? B, help build strong bones? C, send nerve impulses and help you maintain a normal heartbeat? Or D, all of the above. Hmm, I think I know the answer to this one.
D
Why, of course, if you said D, all of the above. Great job. Minerals are really, really important for helping your body stay healthy, run properly, and do all the things it needs.
C
Wow, I had no idea minerals were so important. And on that note, what are some of the most important minerals?
D
I'm so glad you asked. Let's start with the one you probably heard of calcium. Calcium is a mineral that helps to build strong, healthy bones and teeth.
C
Is somebody booing?
D
Nope, those aren't booze. They're mooz m. That's because calcium can be found in dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt.
A
I see.
C
Any other foods?
D
Sure. Canned salmon, sardines with bones, and leafy green vegetables, including broccoli. Also, calcium fortified foods like soy milk, orange juice, and cereals are all rich in calcium.
C
Well, not to brag, but since I eat a lot of pizza and there's cheese on pizza, that must mean I'm getting a lot of calcium.
D
Congratulations, Trusty.
C
Thanks, brocco pie. Okay, what other minerals should the smarty pants and I know about and make sure we get enough of?
D
Well, iron is a mineral that your body needs to make hemoglobin.
C
Um, okay, first things first, smarty pants. What is hemoglobin? Is it a part of your bones, B, part of your red blood cells, or C, something that helps you?
D
I'll ignore that sound effect and just let you know that the correct answer is B, part of your red blood cells. But not just any part. Hemoglobin is the part of your red blood cells that brings oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body.
C
Whoa, that's really important. Without oxygen, your body would not work at all. So what kind of foods should you eat to make sure you have enough iron?
D
Meat is rich in iron.
A
Who wants meat cake?
C
Since I don't want meat cake, what other foods contain iron?
D
Other foods that are rich in iron include tuna and salmon, eggs, beans, baked potato with skins, dried fruits, leafy green vegetables, including broccoli again, and whole and enriched grains like oatmeal or whole wheat bread.
C
What about the meat toppings on my pizza?
D
Eh, those have some iron, but you're better off with lean red meats like beef and lamb, as well as lean pork and poultry.
A
Gotcha.
C
Any other minerals that the smarty pants and I should know about?
D
Absolutely. Potassium is a mineral that keeps your muscles, heart, and nervous system working well. And since I already know that, you're gonna ask me what foods have potassium. I'll just say bananas, tomatoes, potatoes, sweet potatoes with skins, green vegetables such as, you guessed it, broccoli. Also, citrus fruits, milk, yogurt, and legumes, including beans, split peas, and lentils are all rich in potassium.
C
Cool.
D
Cool.
C
So is that the last one?
D
Nope. There's one more you should know about, and it starts with the letter Z and rhymes with ink.
C
Uh, smarty pants, do you know what it is. Shout it out if you do.
D
Why, of course. It's zinc.
C
Oh, wow. Any idea what zinc does, smarty pants? Does it A, help with your eyesight, B, help you sleep better, or C, help your body's immune system fight off illnesses and infections?
D
The answer is C. Zinc helps your immune system fight off illnesses and infections, so it's pretty important.
C
I'll say. And what do you need to eat to make sure you have enough zinc?
D
Beef, pork, dark meat, chicken, milk, yogurt, cheese, nuts and legumes are all rich in zinc.
A
Gotcha.
C
Okay, so we've got calcium, iron, potassium, and zinc as our Mount Rushmore of minerals, which is a clever way to think about it since Mount Rushmore is carved into a mountain which is made of rock, which is made of minerals.
D
Good one, Trusty. You can also add magnesium and sodium to your list of essential minerals. Sodium, as some of you might know, is salt. And believe it or not, your body needs a small amount, maybe about 500 milligrams a day, to help maintain nerve function, muscle contraction and fluid balance.
C
Good thing there's lots of food choices that contain the minerals you need. But wait, what happens if you don't get enough minerals? Smartypants, what do you think? Do you think it doesn't matter, or do you think it could cause health issues?
D
Well, having heard everything I've been saying, it's pretty clear that not getting enough minerals could cause health problems.
A
Whoa.
C
Whoa is right. And woe is me if I don't get enough minerals. That's why it's a good idea to be sure to eat a balanced diet that contains mineral rich foods.
D
Exactly. Iron is an especially really important mineral for helping kids grow and develop. Did you know babies are born with iron stored in their bodies?
C
Really? But wait, if iron is already stored in our bodies when we're born, why do we need to keep eating foods with iron? We'll find out the answer to that question and more right after this quick ad break and a word from our sponsors.
A
Yeah, I can't open this jar of pickles.
C
Let me try, Grandpa.
D
Ha.
A
You've clearly been drinking your milk. Milk can help you build muscles. Free.
D
We're finally free.
A
Wait, who said that milk can't stop pickles from coming alive?
C

Now back to who Smarted? Okay, as you recall, I'm standing in my favorite pizzeria having an in depth conversation about minerals with a talking broccoli pizza piece.
D
That's me.
C
And together we've discovered how some essential minerals are essential to your health and well being. This includes iron, which today I learned is actually stored in your body when you are born. The question is, if you're born with iron, why do you need more iron?
D
Well, as we mentioned, iron helps move oxygen from your lungs to other parts of your body. So it's really important to make sure you have enough iron. Many people, including children, have an iron deficiency, which means they don't have enough iron in their bodies.
C
I see. And what causes someone to have an iron deficiency? Any ideas, smarty pants?
D
Iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia can be caused by not eating enough foods with iron, changes in your body as you grow, gastrointestinal tract problems and blood loss. Oh wow.
C
And how would you know if you have an iron deficiency?
D
Great question, trusty. The most common symptoms are pale skin, shortness of breath, extreme fatigue and feeling weak heart palpitations, headaches and dizziness, and something called pica, which is cravings for unusual things.
C
You mean like if I suddenly started ordering pineapple on pizza?
D
More like non food things like ice or dirt.
C
Oh yeah, that wouldn't be great. Although I still think I'd rather eat ice and dirt than pineapple pizza or meat cake.
A
Hey.
D
As for iron deficiency anemia, which is a condition where a lack of iron prevents your body from producing enough hemoglobin that is usually diagnosed with a simple blood test.
A
I see.
C
And who should be tested for anemia?
D
Anemia screenings are recommended for all infants when they are 12 months old. But if you're showing signs of iron deficiency at any age, you might want to talk to your doctor.
C
You hear that smarty pants and smarty families? Is there a treatment for anemia? What do you think, smarty pants? Yes or no?
D
The short answer is yes. Treatment depends on symptoms, age and general health. But iron deficiency anemia can be treated with iron supplements and an iron rich diet. For example, switching your pizza to broccoli pizza would be helpful.
C
Okay, okay. I see where you're going with this broccoli pie. Besides eating iron rich foods and taking iron supplements, is there anything people can do to help their bodies absorb iron?
D
There sure is. There is a vitamin found in some foods that helps your body absorb iron.
A
Hmm.
C
We did do an episode on vitamins. Smarty pants. Do you remember which vitamin helps your body absorb iron? Is it vitamin A, vitamin B, or vitamin C?
D
Why? The answer is vitamin C.
C
And as we mentioned, you can get vitamin C from fruits like oranges and tangerines, grapefruits, strawberries, mango, papaya and kiwi, lemons and limes, pineapple and melons. You can also drink juices with vitamin C. Ah.
D
But you can also get vitamin C from vegetables like red and green peppers, sweet and white potatoes, cauliflower, spinach, kale and other leafy greens, winter squash, brussels sprouts, cabbage, tomatoes, and of course, broccoli.
C
I must say, I appreciate your efforts to make broccoli my new favorite pizza topping. And I must say, it might be working after all. I love eating pizza, but I definitely want to stay healthy and having some more minerals would help.
D
So what do you say?
C
I think this is the start of a beautiful and delicious friendship.
A
Nom, nom, nom, nom, nom.
