If you said B, the 1980s you got was in the 1980s and 1990s. That bubble tea became very popular in Taiwan and China. And then even more recently, its popularity has spread around the world.

That's interesting. Bubble tea has been around for about 40 years, but for me, it's a relatively new thing. After all, today is my first time trying bubble tea, if I ever get around to trying some. What about you, smartypants? Have you known about bubble tea for a long time?

The reason bubble tea might seem newish to you, Trusty, is because sometimes it took a while for bubble tea to really catch on around the world. Bubble tea first became popular in the United States in places like California, but now it's pretty much available all over.

I have noticed bubble tea shops popping up all over the place. Get it? Bubbles popping. Hello. Is this thing on?

Um, well, you're called bubble tea, but why? What is bubble tea exactly? Is it a carbonated tea? Kind of like a tea soda? What do you think, smarty pants? Yes or no? The answer is no.

Bubble tea is not tea soda. Although I can understand why you'd think that. The tea base for bubble tea can be black tea, green tea, or oolong tea. Milk teas, on the other hand, usually have fresh or powdered milk added. And some tea shops might use condensed milk, almond milk, soy milk, or coconut milk instead.

[Trusty]

Gotcha. That covers the tea part. But what about the bubbles?

The bubbles in bubble tea are actually tapioca pearls. Pearls?

As in precious jewels? Say, wouldn't that hurt your teeth?

Actually, no. The first bubble tea drink was a mix of hot Taiwanese black tea, tapioca pearls, AKA boba, condensed milk, and a little syrup or honey. But as the popularity of bubble tea grew, so did the choices and flavors available. This includes some that don't contain tea at all, such as certain fruit slushies and brown sugar milk tea. Not to mention, these days, the bubble tea flavor isn't limited to drinks. You can get bubble tea flavored candy, cookies, ice cream or cakes.

[Trusty]

Mmm, that sounds delicious. Say, can you get a bubble tea flavored?

[Boba Wet]

No, there's no bubble tea flavored pizza. But you could probably put some boba on top if you really wanted to. But I wouldn't recommend it.

Because there's conflicting accounts. In one account, Tutsong Hae, a young entrepreneur, artist, and founder of the Han Linh Tea Room in Tainan, Taiwan, was inspired by the dessert stalls at his local market. He saw tapioca balls, a traditional Taiwanese snack that he remembered from his childhood, and he decided to add the tapioca balls to his tea. Inventing bubble tea. However, according to another account, Lu Hanqi, the founder of the Chun Shwetang teahouse in Taichung, Taiwan, asked his staff to try to make teas with different toppings and textures. One cook decided to add tapioca balls to the tea, and bubble tea was invented, introducing tapioca pearls and drinks to Taiwan and eventually to the world.

Yeah, you're probably right. I think I'll stick to yummy fruit flavors like mango, peach, strawberry, lychee, taro or honeydew. And toppings like pudding, coconut jelly or just boba. Especially the popping kind. But also, if I'm going to try my first bubble tea, I'd prefer one that didn't talk.
