In February 1978, 23 year old College student Steven Kubacki left for a cross country skiing trip near the frozen shores of Lake Michigan and never returned. Searchers found his skis, poles, and backpack neatly arranged near the shoreline, along with a trail of footprints that appeared to lead onto the frozen lake before abruptly ending.
Fourteen months later however, Steven suddenly reappeared more than 700 miles away in Massachusetts, carrying unfamiliar belongings and evidence of extensive travel while claiming he could not remember where he had been or what he had done. But when a witness came forward with a very different account of Steven’s return, the mystery only deepened, beginning a decades long search for the truth behind one of America’s strangest disappearances.
Then ultimately more than 40 years later, Steven came forward claiming he remembered everything.
