Early in his life, the Buddha discovered that he can categorize his mental states into two baskets: wholesome and unwholesome. he saw that wholesome mind states led to his welfare and happiness and the welfare and happiness of others, and he became resolute to prevent and abandon the type of mind states that led to his suffering and the suffering of those around him.
