Now, I understand you're a fan of Woo Woo, not of the podcast. I'm not trying to flatter. I know we have. We're still getting the word out. You're a fan of the concept of Woo Woo.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

Oh, yes. I live my life by the woo.

[Irene Bremis]

Okay, good.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

Definitely.

[Irene Bremis]

So usually, first of all, we kind of just chat about how you got your start in the whole comedy of it all. Because, you know, whatever. Whether there's a manifesting thing or whatever, just. I like to know how someone made it big in the comedy world. So tell us, like, were you a kid who is like, I want to be an actor in this voice. I want to be an actor.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

Yes, just like that.

[Irene Bremis]

Or were you just the class clown? Like, how did you get into the whole comedy and actor scene?

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

Well, I remember watching variety shows when I was a kid and feeling like, oh, my God, if I could ever do that, that would feel so powerful. That would be amazing. Like, I loved the glam of it all, but also being funny, like Cher. Cher and, you know, Mitzi Gaynor and Carol Burnett, of course, all those. All those ladies was like, this is. You could wear sequins and feathers and sequins still be really funny, you know? So that really, I. I thought was the greatest, most powerful thing a person could be. But then when it was time for me to get my life started, my parents were like, what? No, no, you're not doing that. Yeah, we do not support that. So it took me a while to get going, and when I finally got married and left the house because I was a nerd who lived at home until the day I got married at 26, my husband was like, well, I think you can do it. Why don't you just take classes at the ground length? So because of him and my best friend at the time that I was working with, we were working at this shitty hotel near Disneyland, and we were like, this cannot be our lives. So we signed up for the Groundlings. She signed me up and we started taking classes together. She stopped and I kept going, and I just never looked back. But I wish she would have stayed on it because she was amazing.

[Irene Bremis]

Did you. Were you doing school plays and stuff like that, or was it just like, you just knew you were funny kind of thing?

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

I did school plays. I wrote my own sketches and made people watch them, you know?

[Irene Bremis]

Yeah.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

We had a stage in the backyard. The way our patio was built, we made it a stage and stuff, so, you know, all the elements were there. My parents didn't really realize what a monster they were creating. And two monsters, because my sister, who is a practicing therapist, also owns a comedy theater in Portland. So my parents are just like, what the hell happened?

[Rachel Dratch]

Wow.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

We didn't think this was going to be part of our lives and that our kids would be talking about us in a comedic way.

[Irene Bremis]

When you're at the Groundlings, do you kind of move up the ranks? I did the whole Second City thing, so I've just heard about Groundlings. But, like, once you're there, were you in the company there, too, or how does that work?

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

I was. Yeah. I finally got into the Company, and I was there for seven years, but at that point, I was. I was working a lot, so I couldn't do as many shows as I wanted to do. But that's kind of the whole reason you would go through a program, like, so that was my priority. But, yeah, you. You rise through the ranks and you can be told at any time, yeah, this is not for you.

[Irene Bremis]

That's what I've heard about it there. Yeah. And then who was there while you were there? Like, who are your contemporaries at the grandmother.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

Let's see. Makayla Watkins, Jim Rash, Nat Faxon, Kristen Wiig.

[Irene Bremis]

All right, and so then how did you. Was the Goldberg, like, what was your first big break or whatever?

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

So my first big break was Reno 91 1, and I was scouted when a casting assistant saw me as an understudy in a. In a play.

[Irene Bremis]

Ooh.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

And so I got that audition, and it was at a time when I thought, well, fuck this. I'm probably never going to make it. Like, I'm. I'm 32 years old, washed up. I don't have a real agent. I have a real flaky manager. Maybe this is just not going to happen for me. Maybe I should just be grateful that I got into the Groundlings and, you know, call it a day. So I took that energy into the audition room. My energy of, I don't give a what happens here. And it worked out.

[Irene Bremis]

Oh, good.

And so then I got on that

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

little basic cable show that has never been off the air.

[Irene Bremis]

Yeah.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

In 25 years.

[Irene Bremis]

Right. Oh, my God. 25 years. And then. Then the Goldbergs. I'm sure there's other steps in between,

[Rachel Dratch]

but then you're the lead on the Goldbergs.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

Yes.

[Irene Bremis]

For how many years was that?

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

10 years.

[Irene Bremis]

Wow.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

10 years. And when I first got Reno, you know, it was a basic cable show, so it didn't pay hardly anything. So I kept my side job, like, the first. For the first 12 years of my career. So I would just.

[Irene Bremis]

Side job.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

I was editing a social work journal on the campus of Cal State Long beach, and nobody cared. Like, I had an office and everything, but I could do it from wherever I was. So I would be in dressing rooms on different sets, just editing my manuscripts or doing whatever. And, you know, it was part time. I could do it from wherever, so it totally worked. But by the time I got the Goldbergs, it was time to stop, because that.

[Irene Bremis]

Yeah.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

That show took every second of my time.

[Irene Bremis]

Wow.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

Yeah.

[Irene Bremis]

And then, well, Bridesmaids. I don't know if you want to talk about Bridesmaids, but I bet everybody asks you this question about Desi. Did you know when you were filming it that it was going to be such a big. No, we didn't, but.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

No, we didn't.

[Irene Bremis]

Yeah.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

And I mean, I was in on the first table read of that movie, and that was 2007.

[Irene Bremis]

Huh.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

So then it got made in 2010.

[Irene Bremis]

Okay.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

And I just thought, well, this is fun. I sure like doing movies. I hope I get to do another one one day.

[Irene Bremis]

Wow.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

My. My shitty manager that I had at the time was like, I don't think you should do this. I don't find it funny. Read the script and was like, I don't think this is funny. I don't know why. Oh, anyone would be a part of this. And I said, well, you know, I think working is better than not working. And these are my friends, and I want to do it, so I'm gonna do it.

[Irene Bremis]

Oh, my gosh.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

Like, just terrible, terrible advice.

[Irene Bremis]

Yeah, definitely. A shitty manager. Yes. Yeah. Yes.

Was it a guy? Just curious. It was okay. I was just wondering not to say all guys, but I was wondering, like, he didn't get the female comedy of the whole thing. Yeah, but obviously it's universal, so.

It is universal.

I mean, that's a lot of guys. Favorite movies, too.

Yeah, exactly.

I don't want to genderize anything here. That's even a word it is, sweetie.

So was there any like manifesting moment of your career or to just pretty much go along? Like sometimes Rachel just hard work pays off or. I don't know.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

I used to have like a journal where I would, you know, it was like a journal slash vision board where I would put things down that I really wanted and. And I manifested a lot of things. But here's the problem with manifestation. It should always be this or something better because you don't know what's good for you.

[Irene Bremis]

It's a good point.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

You know, manifested a boat and the thing damn near Bankrupted us. So you know this or something better. That's what you always.

[Irene Bremis]

Yeah, that's good. I like something better.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

Yeah.

[Irene Bremis]

Oh my.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

That's why I never get upset set if I don't book a certain job.

[Irene Bremis]

Yes.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

It's like great. If that was not for me, I don't want it.

So, Wendy, what have you experienced? Woo Woo tales such as ghost psychics. I don't know. What, what's your relationship with Woo Woo? I should ask?

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

Well, you know, I, I have had experiences my whole life that I kind of talk myself out of thinking they were something. Because that's what we do.

[Rachel Dratch]

Yes, that's right.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

Yeah. And I was raised in a very religious household, so to even think about those things is just. You're, you're one step away from demon possession.

[Irene Bremis]

That's right.

Ah, okay.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

But there are so many things have happened that are undeniable that you're like, I, I think I'm going to believe what's right in front of my face here.

[Irene Bremis]

I like.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

So, yeah, I've got a very close connection to the Woo. And we have a place in New Orleans, one of my favorite cities in

[Irene Bremis]

the world of New Orleans.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

And so haunted.

[Irene Bremis]

That's what I.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

You can't deny it. You cannot deny it. You can feel it. You can feel that electric spiritual energy just walking down the street.

[Rachel Dratch]

Yes.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

You know, too many things have happened there for it not to be full of spirit. And so we have this little place. Oh, should I tell this story? I don't know.

[Irene Bremis]

Yeah. Yes.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

So we have a place, a tiny place in the French Quarter that is a back house. And the back house, where back houses were traditionally for the servants. Right. And ours is on the lower level. There's a condo right above us, but that's where the servants would have been living and what our place would have been would have been the kitchen. So this happens every time we go there. Things crash around in the condo and we can't figure out what it is. And it wakes us up out of a dead sleep. Okay.

[Irene Bremis]

Yeah.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

But there's such a thing called energy imprints where just emotions or vibrations that were repeated constantly still show up over time. It's almost. God, how would I describe it? Like a wrinkle in time almost left behind.

[Irene Bremis]

Or in a cycle sort of.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

Yeah, yeah. There's just an imprint on the area. So we hear footsteps all night long above us when there's nobody there because no one lives in that condo full time. And we always know when people are there. Footsteps constantly. Doors Slamming cupboards. Slamming. We wake up, there's no one. No one around, and we can't figure out what crashed. So we finally were like, okay, well, we're just gonna have to talk to this spirit. We cannot deny it. This is. I mean, to wake us out of a dead sleep. So we had a conversation, said, hey, we're not here that often. I know I sound like a mental

[Irene Bremis]

patient saying, no, this is the nature of this pod. We all sound right.

You're safe here, sweetie.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

Thank you. Thank you. I feel very safe. We know you're. We're not here that often, and we're not telling you to leave. You're. You stay here. This is your home. But just when we're sleeping. Could you hold it down?

[Irene Bremis]

Just.

Just don't bang around when we're sleeping. And it stopped.

A reasonable ghost.

Yes.

Coincidence. Maybe. But that's what we did.

That's. I mean, I've heard that's what you're supposed to do, is like, yeah. Tell the ghost. Well, depending on if you. Depending on the amount of whatever havoc it's causing, some people say, please leave and go to wherever. And some people just say what you said, like, hey, we're cool. Just. Could you. Yeah.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

Yeah. Because it's not scary. You don't feel scared when you go in there. It's just annoying.

[Irene Bremis]

Right.

[Rachel Dratch]

Right.

I have a question. Do you ever get to know the people that live in the apartment when they are. When they have. When it's occupied, and have they experienced anything with the ghost?

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

We spoke to the guy that lived up there because that's who we bought our place from. And we said, so you know when you're. Because he's always. A lot of times he's out of town when we're there. So we said, is someone coming to check on your place for some reason at 1 in the morning or 2 in the morning when you're out on your cruises or whatever? No. Okay. Because we. I. I just felt weird. I. I don't know what to say.

And she started saying, yeah, there's this person. There's this person. There's this person. They're all right. They're standing behind you. And I'm seeing someone who. Who's going like this. And I said, I have no idea what that is. I have no idea what that is. As we keep going, she keeps saying, all right, now there's someone coming forward, and he's not letting anybody else talk. And he's saying he died and was found in a forest. And he's saying, do you think I'm someone who goes to the forest? And I'm like, I don't know what this is. My manager comes in, tears streaming down her face. She goes, that's for me. That's for me. My. My brother was murdered, and he was found in a forest. Now, she didn't allow that to be shown, which is too bad. She should have. And, you know, the message is always like, look, I'm at peace. I'm fine. Just wanted to say hi. Whatever. But that was pretty wild to see. So then, you know, back to this

thing, and Wendy's holding her hands up

to her neck like someone was strangled.

So then Thanksgiving comes and I'm going through my. A photo album at my parents house, and I'm seeing an autopsy report of my uncle that committed suicide when I was 2 years old. And I'm looking at this autopsy report. Died of strangulation.

Oh, my gosh.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

And I'm like, well, this is okay. Okay, now this can of worms is open. Wait a minute. I don't ever remember anyone in my family telling me that Kenny had a girlfriend. I wonder if Kenny didn't have girlfriends. I don't know. But I started kind of going on this odyssey of I got to find out more about this because it happened when I was so young and it was so painful that people just didn't talk about it that much. So I get the opportunity to go to Tyler Henry. And prior to that, I'm meditating with this rose quartz in my hand and just concentrating on my uncle, concentrating on him. So I hand the thing to Tyler. He's feeling it, you know, he. He draws, but he's not.

[Irene Bremis]

Okay.

[Wendy McLendon-Covey]

Yeah, have you seen that yet? He just sort of scribbles and it helps him concentrate. And he goes, okay, so I'm seeing someone who took their life. He didn't feel like he was like the family accepted him, blah, blah, blah. I said, I'm looking for one word. Tyler. And yeah, he was gay. Okay. And that's part of the reason why he killed himself. And then he went on to say, like, wait, I'm seeing someone, like, standing on a roof for some reason. I don't know what that means, blah, blah, blah. But after. After that session where he came up with so many things, he was with me for like two hours or something like that. We couldn't possibly put it all in an episode, but I felt like I had traveled through space and time. I was so exhausted that I don't know how I got to the car. My best friend loaded me in, and we got home somehow. But that part I don't really remember. But I came home and I told my mom, I said, hey, I just saw a psychic knowing she does not like that shit. And for some reason she just said, oh, did Kenny come through? And I said, well, yeah, he did, actually.

Wow.

And it seems like he might have been gay, you know? Oh, well, that makes sense. You know, I Remember one of our cousins, he used to jump on the roof and, like, do weird things. And this, like, she. She verified everything that Tyler said. So when I hear people say, like, oh, he's a fraud. She's a fraud, I think. Look, I think once you start doing stuff for television and you have to come up with something, right, Lines get crossed. Because I don't believe everybody can be red, right? But if you're spending time on it, you gotta get an episode out of it. You put money into it. Like, if someone told me that she wears an earwig or something, I would believe that with that weird little hair. All I'm saying is that she. She was accurate, and so was he. So.
