We're in a golden age.
Guy Raz
So many discoveries that are jumping off the page. Whoa. You're listening to Bongo in the Big two in the morning on kwow. Alright, folks, we're back with a chance for you and five of your closest friends to win a trip to Bio World. Bio World? Whoa. Bio World? Is that anything like Biomimicry World? Ha. No, Bongo. Bio world is a 3 acre, 90 foot tall greenhouse research facility in the middle of the desert. Yowch. Sounds hot. Yeah, it is. Listeners, to win this relaxing weekend away for six people at Bio World, all you gotta do is win our game called Name that Sound Effect. That's right. Name that Sound Effect. We play a sound effect, all you gotta do is name it. Alright, let's head to the phone lines to hear from our first contestant. Hello, caller, you are on the air.
Mindy Thomas
Shh, shh. Everyone quiet down. I made it through.
Guy Raz
Whoa. Sounds like we got a crew. Welcome to the show, everyone.
Mindy Thomas
Thanks, Bongo. You know I'm a long time listener. Third time caller.
Guy Raz
I'm here too.
Mindy Thomas
Get it? I'm here, Bongo.
Guy Raz
Okay, Mindy, are you ready to name that sound effect?
Mindy Thomas
Big toot. I was born ready. Oh, you were?
Guy Raz
Alrighty, here's your first sound effect. Take a listen.
Mindy Thomas
That's easy. It's a gauge three semiconducting copper spring. It's the same one that I use in my shrink wand.
Guy Raz
That is correct. We also would have accepted just spring. Okay, now it's time for sound effect number two. Take a listen. Oh, Mandy, I know that's Niagara Falls. Tell them it's Niagara Falls. Whoa, I'm hearing Niagara Falls. Is that your final answer? What?
Mindy Thomas
No, no, no. That, Bongo, is the sound of a flush. O Matic 2000. With built in grime detection and advanced.
Guy Raz
Scrubbing mechanics, you don't have to be so specific. You can just say toilet flush.
Mindy Thomas
Oh, sorry.
Guy Raz
O. Just one guess away from winning that beautiful weekend escape to Bio World. Here comes the third sound effect. Take a listen.
Mindy Thomas
Uh, I don't know that one. Oh, Mindy, I know it. Oh, oh, hold on, hold on. Guy Raz knows it. Let me pass him the phone. Here, here, Guy Raz, take this. Okay.
Guy Raz
It's all right. Guy Raz for all the marbles. Name that sound effect. Well, Mr. Toot, if I'm not mistaken, I believe that's the sound of a classic gardener three notch sprinkler system. I have the same irrigation system set up in my micro garden. We have a winner. Yes, once again, way more specific than we needed. But a whiz a win. Congratulations, Mindy. You have just won a stand at Bio World. Bio World? State of the art research facility designed to replicate all of Earth's biomes. What? What are biomes? I don't know. Okay, coming up next after the break on kwow, are you smarter than a house cat? A show where house cats rule and house humans troop. Mindy, we did it.
Mindy Thomas
We won the tickets.
Guy Raz
And we all felt equally. It's a good thing we won those tickets, Mindy. It would have been really awkward turning up to Bioworld without a reservation.
Mindy Thomas
Tell me about it. Are we there yet? Not much longer now, Grandma GeForce, where are you taking me again?
Guy Raz
Bio World.
Mindy Thomas
What a world.
Guy Raz
Bio World. It's one of the largest running science experiments in the world. And that's where we're staying this weekend.
Mindy Thomas
You know it in a second.
Guy Raz
Science experiment? Yup. Huh. Well, what kind of science experiment? It's sort of like a massive greenhouse. Oh, like the one you have in your garden? Well, yeah, but the one in my backyard is only about the size of a parking space. This greenhouse takes up more than three acres and is over 90ft tall. Whoa.
Mindy Thomas
That's like twice the size of the White House in Washington DC.
Guy Raz
Oh, wow. That's a too big.
Mindy Thomas
But it's for science, Dennis.
Guy Raz
I said it's too big. Bioworld is actually a life size replica of a research facility in Arizona called Biosphere 2.
Mindy Thomas
Yeah, it's filled with all sorts of plants and is completely sealed off from the rest of the world. So let me get this straight. Our plan for this weekend is to sit down and watch a bunch of plants grow?
Guy Raz
No, because before they started performing all those plant experiments. But in Biosphere 2, they performed a different kind of experiment. One with humans. Yay, humans.
Mindy Thomas
And that's the one that we're going to try to replicate or redo at Bio World.
Guy Raz
Neat.
Mindy Thomas
You got time for a story guy. Raz.
Guy Raz
Uh, one second here, Mindy. Let me check my gps. You are approximately one story time away from your destination.
Mindy Thomas
Perfect. Story time. Long, long ago, in a mystical time called the 90s, eight researchers and scientists were about to embark on one of the most audacious science experiments of all time. Hey there. Look at me. I'm a researcher ready to kick this experiment. Experiment's butt.
Guy Raz
Well, nice to meet you, fellow researcher. I'm also here to kick experimental butt. Me, too. Now, where's that experimental butt everyone keeps talking about? I want to kick it.
Mindy Thomas
They would be locked inside a huge, 136,000 square foot airtight greenhouse called Biosphere 2. It was full of plants and animals and everything else someone might need to be cut off from the rest of the world.
Guy Raz
Ooh, this place is nice.
Mindy Thomas
But these researchers weren't going for just one weekend like us. They were going for a whole two years.
Guy Raz
Two years. Do we have any snacks?
Mindy Thomas
No. Luckily, they didn't need to bring any food with them, as most of their food, 83% of it, was grown right there in the biosphere.
Guy Raz
Oh, phew. What do we got? All right, let's see here. We got banana trees, papaya trees, sweet potatoes, beets, peanuts, rice and wheat. Okay, yeah, that's enough snacks. Close the door. We got enough air in here, right? We'll be fine.
Mindy Thomas
And because of all these plants, they didn't need any air from the outside either. The crew would breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. And the plants in turn, would breathe in the carbon dioxide and breathe out.
Guy Raz
Oxygen in a closed loop, Just like a giant terrarium.
Mindy Thomas
Exact oritos, Guy Raz. It was the perfect plan until something went horribly wrong.
Guy Raz
It's the alarm that tells us when something is going horribly wrong. Oh, no.
Mindy Thomas
Whatever. Only a few months, once into the experiment, the researchers had a big problem from some very small visitors.
Guy Raz
Is that bacteria in our soil?
Mindy Thomas
Hey, how'd that get in here? Somehow, some bacteria had snuck its way into the biosphere and started wreaking havoc on their crops.
Guy Raz
Ah, not the crops. I was gonna eat those.
Mindy Thomas
Is that your stomach?
Guy Raz
Yeah. That bacteria ate all my food.
Mindy Thomas
And not only that, but this bacteria was oxygen hungry. Meaning that it was sucking up all of the oxygen that the plants were giving off before the researchers and scientists got a chance to breathe it.
Guy Raz
Is it just me, or is it getting harder to breathe in here?
Mindy Thomas
This made simple tasks like standing up and walking around much, much more difficult. Huh?
Guy Raz
I pooped. What do you mean you pooped? You only moved about 10ft today. All in a day's work. So what happened, Mindy?
Mindy Thomas
Well, these researchers had to get extra oxygen pumped into the biosphere, and they had to raid their emergency food supplies.
Guy Raz
Tommy, slow down. These rations are for emergencies only. Well, my tummy says it is an emergency. There, there, Tommy.
Mindy Thomas
And the next two years weren't much easier. We're talking lots of hiccups along the way. But on September 26, 1993, the researchers emerged from the biosphere back into the real world.
Guy Raz
Fresh air.
Mindy Thomas
It's good to be. Wow.
Guy Raz
Yeah, I remember the 90s. Mutton chops, pickling your own vegetables. I used to wax my handlebar mustache from sunup to sundown.
Mindy Thomas
Fingerling. They're talking about the 1990s, not the 1890s.
Guy Raz
So was I. Dude, why would anyone want to lock themselves in a greenhouse for two whole years? Well, Dennis, this kind of research is actually vital for the future of space. Space travel. Some of the people that are involved in these kinds of experiments call themselves analog astronauts. Wait a minute. Does that mean we're gonna be analog astronauts?
Mindy Thomas
For this weekend, we are. Yay.
Guy Raz
You have arrived at your destination.
Mindy Thomas
Look, everyone, we're here. Now where do we park this ice cream truck? Oh, over there. Look, ice cream truck parking. Perfect. Everyone still in one piece?
Guy Raz
Yes.
Mindy Thomas
Great. Then let's get this weekend started.
Guy Raz
All right.
Mindy Thomas
Locking up the ice cream truck. Okay, follow me, everyone. The entrance is over this way.
Guy Raz
Everyone ready to play some make believe? Make believe? What? I didn't know we'd have to make anything.
Mindy Thomas
Because, Reggie, that's basically what analog astronauts do. They play make believe.
Guy Raz
Really?
Mindy Thomas
Yeah.
Guy Raz
One of the main reasons why scientists take part in these sorts of experiments is because in the future, when we set up habitats on the moon or on other planets, we'll have to do exactly this. We'll have to live in airtight, self sustaining greenhouses. So the scientists pretend. Pretend to be astronauts on other planets so that when we go there for real, we know what to do.
Mindy Thomas
You got it.
Guy Raz
And that's what we're doing this weekend. Pretending to be astronauts. Exactly.
Mindy Thomas
Well, I'm gonna be Sally Ride, the first woman in space.
Guy Raz
Ooh. I wanna be Buzz Aldrin. The first guy to be on the moon. Aw. I wanna be Buzz Aldrin.
Mindy Thomas
It's Newsy Lou, Tommy.
Guy Raz
You can't just say you're Buzz Aldrin and then you're Buzz Aldrin. What if everyone wants to be Buzz Al?
Mindy Thomas
Coming. Oh, hello.
Guy Raz
Hi. We're here for the Bio World Experience.
Mindy Thomas
Yeah, we have a winning reservation from Bongo in the big toot.
Guy Raz
I don't know who that is. What? The reservation should be under Mindy. Okay, let me check here.
Mindy Thomas
Oh, there it is. The competition winners. Congratulations. Thank you. Of course.
Guy Raz
Let me show you to the crew quarters.
Mindy Thomas
Follow me. Don't mind if I do. Don't mind if I don't. Okay, I just have to quickly scan and decontaminate you.
Guy Raz
Who you calling a contaminant? And there we go.
Mindy Thomas
Welcome to Bioworld.
Guy Raz
Get a load of this place, Mindy. And these ceilings must be 90ft tall.
Mindy Thomas
Yeah, it's like two and a half telephone poles tall.
Guy Raz
Yeah, they fit an entire rainforest in here.
Mindy Thomas
That's right. And not just a rainforest. Bioworld is divided into six different areas. Right now we are in the rainforest area, complete with ocean and coral reef system. Over to our left you can see signs heading towards our mangrove wetlands ecosystem. And beyond that is the fog desert ecosystem.
Guy Raz
Frog desert. Now that I gotta see.
Mindy Thomas
Not right now, Thomas Fingerling. We have to go to our living quarters.
Guy Raz
You may address me as Buzz Aldrin.
Mindy Thomas
Okay, to get to the crew quarters, we need to pass through one more area of Bio World. Follow me.
Guy Raz
Right this way. Wow.
Mindy Thomas
This is the agricultural area.
Guy Raz
Look at all them crops.
Mindy Thomas
That's right. This. This is where you'll be getting most of your food during your stay.
Guy Raz
What was that? Everybody, look out. There's a wild space creature on the loose. Uh, actually, no. That was one of the 38 chickens.
Mindy Thomas
We have here at Bio World. I wanna ride it. Here, chicky, chicky, chicky, chicky. Please don't ride the chickens. We also have goats and pigs here.
Guy Raz
In Bio World, just like they did.
Mindy Thomas
In the original Biosphere 2. Can I ride them? Please don't. Well, that's not a no. Okay.
Guy Raz
And just through here is the crew quarters. This is the human habitat, complete with.
Mindy Thomas
Workshops, laboratories, and of course, living quarters. Dabs on top bunk.
Guy Raz
Oh, no, you don't. Reggie, no. Hands up.
Mindy Thomas
Okay, well, that's the end of the tour. Let me know if you need anything. Bye bye.
Guy Raz
Wow.
Mindy Thomas
This place is just as amazing as I'd hoped it would be, Guy Raz.
Guy Raz
I know, right? I mean, do you think that they'll use our experience here as research for a future space mission?
Mindy Thomas
I mean, maybe, but, you know, it's not just us going through this whole sealed away from the rest of the world experience.
Guy Raz
Wait, we're not gonna be sharing this biosphere with other contest winners, are we, Mindy?
Mindy Thomas
Oh, no, no. We got this place all to ourselves. Phew. But NASA has a bunch of different experiments running. Just like where a group of scientists seal themselves off from the rest of the world and pretend to be astronauts. Ow. What was that?
Guy Raz
I think it's that phone there, Mindy.
Mindy Thomas
What do I do?
Guy Raz
We'll answer it.
Mindy Thomas
Ring a ding Dindy. You've reached Mindy.
Guy Raz
Looks like we've got ourselves a winner.
Mindy Thomas
Hey, Roz, it's Bongo and the Pink Toot.
Guy Raz
Huh? Yeah, that's right. You answered our random phone call on the fourth ring. So you know what that means. A free weekend getaway at Bio World.
Mindy Thomas
Guy Raz, we've won another weekend here at Bio World. Are we their only listeners?
Guy Raz
Maybe we should get through this weekend first. Mindy, we'll take it. Excellent. Neer. Nee. Ner. Okay, coming up next on kwow, the latest track from everyone's favorite vertical transport theme band, the Elevates. Hey, at least it's not all that bad. Turn it up, Mindy.
Mindy Thomas
All right. Yeah. Oh, boy. Wow in the world. We'll be right back, grown ups. This message is for you parents.

Hosts: Mindy Thomas and Guy Raz
Release Date: August 11, 2025
In the episode titled "A Weekend at BioWorld," hosts Mindy Thomas and Guy Raz embark on an exciting journey to BioWorld, a state-of-the-art greenhouse research facility designed to replicate Earth's diverse biomes. This adventure is a result of their successful participation in the podcast's interactive game, "Name that Sound Effect," where they won a weekend getaway for themselves and five friends.
The episode kicks off with Mindy and Guy announcing their victory in the "Name that Sound Effect" contest. The game involves identifying various sound effects, and their sharp ears earned them exclusive tickets to BioWorld—a three-acre, 90-foot-tall greenhouse situated in the desert. As Mindy humorously quips, "We won the tickets" (07:33), setting the stage for their scientific adventure.
BioWorld serves as a life-size replica of Biosphere 2, an ambitious project from the 1990s where eight researchers conducted a two-year experiment to create a closed-loop ecosystem. The hosts delve into the significance of such experiments, emphasizing their role in preparing humanity for future space exploration. Guy Raz explains, "Some of the people that are involved in these kinds of experiments call themselves analog astronauts" (13:59), highlighting the experimental nature of living in isolated, self-sustaining environments.
Upon arriving, Mindy and Guy are awestruck by the sheer scale of BioWorld. Guy remarks, "Bio World is actually a life size replica of a research facility in Arizona called Biosphere 2" (08:29), drawing parallels between the two. They explore various ecosystems within BioWorld, including the rainforest, mangrove wetlands, and fog desert. Mindy notes, "BioWorld is divided into six different areas" (16:55), each meticulously designed to mirror specific Earth habitats.
The hosts guide listeners through the intricate details of BioWorld's operations. They discover the agricultural area where most of the food is grown, featuring banana trees, sweet potatoes, and rice among others. Mindy humorously interacts with the environment, saying, "I wanna ride it. Here, chicky, chicky, chicky" (17:48), showcasing the playful side of their scientific exploration. They also interact with the quirky inhabitants, including chickens, goats, and pigs, adding a lighthearted touch to the educational experience.
Mindy and Guy recount the original Biosphere 2 experiment, detailing the unexpected challenges faced by the researchers. Mindy narrates, "Once into the experiment, the researchers had a big problem from some very small visitors" (11:44), referring to invasive bacteria that disrupted the ecosystem by consuming oxygen and damaging crops. This segment underscores the complexities of maintaining a balanced, closed-loop system and the critical lessons learned for future endeavors in space habitats.
Drawing connections between BioWorld and space missions, the hosts discuss the importance of analog astronauts in preparing for extraterrestrial living. Guy Raz muses, "One of the main reasons why scientists take part in these sorts of experiments is because in the future, when we set up habitats on the moon or on other planets, we'll have to do exactly this" (15:09). This conversation highlights the pivotal role of BioWorld as a testing ground for technologies and lifestyle adaptations necessary for long-term space habitation.
Midway through their visit, Mindy and Guy receive another surprise phone call announcing an additional weekend at BioWorld. Instead of sharing this newfound opportunity, they decide to focus on their current experience, ensuring they make the most of their exclusive access. Mindy exclaims, "Guy Raz, we've won another weekend here at Bio World" (19:30), adding an element of excitement and anticipation for future explorations.
The episode seamlessly blends scientific insights with engaging storytelling, making complex topics accessible and entertaining for both kids and adults. By immersing themselves in BioWorld, Mindy and Guy not only educate their audience about ecosystem dynamics and space exploration but also inspire curiosity and a sense of wonder. As Mindy fondly puts it, "Keep on wowing" (27:16), encapsulating the essence of the podcast's mission to ignite imagination through science and innovation.
"A Weekend at BioWorld" serves as a captivating exploration of sustainable ecosystems and their applications in space research. Through lively interactions and insightful discussions, Mindy and Guy Raz bring to life the challenges and triumphs of living in a closed-loop environment, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the scientific endeavors that shape our future.
