Reggie
Get ready for an adventure of magnificent proportion.
Dennis
I don't know what you've been told we're in a golden age so many.
Reggie
Discoveries that are jumping off the page.
Dennis
While in the world While in the world While in the world Wild. Oh, I'm so excited to be here at the zoo, Reg. So where do you think we should go first? We could visit the lion den that's over there. Or let's see. Oh, there's a giraffe zone. Maybe Tiger Land. Avian World. Reggie, we were just there last time. Oh, I think I know why you want to go to Avian World. You just want to see that colorful toucan you've been texting with lately. Okay, Reg, come on. Avian World it is.
Reggie
Isn't this fun Guy Raz?
Guy Raz
Uh huh.
Dennis
Is that Guy Raz and Dennis, Just.
Reggie
You and me having a day at the zoo together.
Guy Raz
Dennis, you followed me here, so.
Dennis
Hey Guy Raz. Dennis, over here.
Guy Raz
Oh, hey, Mindy. Hey Reggie.
Dennis
What are you two doing at the zoo? Are you two having a side adventure without me?
Guy Raz
Yep.
Reggie
What?
Guy Raz
No. No, we're not having a side adventure.
Dennis
Aw.
Reggie
Phew.
Dennis
Cause for a second there, I thought.
Reggie
I want to go on a side adventure.
Guy Raz
No, I told you, Dennis. You followed me here. I'm just here to get a photo of the African elephant in the safari zone.
Reggie
Oh, Rye. For your photo challenge thing or whatever.
Dennis
Wait, photo challenge?
Guy Raz
Yeah, I got this new camera last week, and I've been putting it to use with this online photo challenge.
Dennis
Ooh, a new camera. Fancy. Show me, show me, show me, show me, show me.
Guy Raz
I'll show you. I'll show you. Let me just get it out of the case here.
Dennis
So shiny.
Reggie
Yeah, so shiny.
Dennis
So have you taken any pictures yet? What's on it?
Guy Raz
Well, let me show you what I've photographed so far. So this is a photo of our snack. Here's one of a cloud that looks like a manatee. Wow.
Dennis
It really does.
Guy Raz
Oh, and here's. Wait a minute, Dennis.
Reggie
What?
Guy Raz
Did you use my camera to take a selfie?
Reggie
No. I mean, yeah.
Dennis
What?
Reggie
You said you needed to photograph something beautiful and majestic, and you thought that.
Guy Raz
Thing would be you?
Reggie
Of course I did.
Dennis
Oh, boy.
Guy Raz
Well, that's actually the reason why we're here, Mindy. The last photo I need to take for my photo challenge is to get a photo of something beautiful and majestic.
Dennis
And so you came to find me Guy Raz.
Guy Raz
Aw, what? No, no, no, Mindy. I'm here to take a photo of the elephants, remember?
Dennis
Oh, yeah. Well, Guy Raz, I don't know how to break this to you, but.
Guy Raz
What? What is it, Mindy?
Dennis
Well, the safari zone where the elephants live is closed today.
Guy Raz
Safari zone is closed?
Dennis
Yeah, I think they're building a new water slide for the hippos or something. I don't know.
Guy Raz
Oh, man. What am I gonna do now?
Dennis
Mindy, I've got an idea. Guy Raz.
Guy Raz
Mindy, I can't take a photo of you.
Dennis
I'm not talking about me. Guy Raz. I know where we can find some elephants.
Guy Raz
You do?
Dennis
Yeah.
Guy Raz
And where?
Dennis
Greenland.
Reggie
Oh, Greenland. What's Greenland? Like an amusement park or something?
Dennis
What? No, Dennis, it's a country.
Reggie
Oh.
Guy Raz
A country that's only 500 miles from the North Pole?
Dennis
That's the one. A country full of lush forests, sandy beaches, and most importantly, incredible wildlife, including elephants.
Guy Raz
Uh, hang on. Are we thinking about the same Greenland, Mindy?
Dennis
The one owned by Denmark?
Guy Raz
Yeah, the country that is two thirds above the Arctic Circle.
Reggie
Huh. So not an amusement park, then.
Guy Raz
I thought we were gonna go see elephants, Mindy.
Dennis
Oh, yeah, we are.
Guy Raz
Well, Greenland definitely doesn't sound like the kind of Place an elephant would live or even want to live.
Dennis
Oh, yeah. There are no elephants in Greenland now, but we'll have. But there used to be.
Guy Raz
What do you mean?
Dennis
Well, I was just reading about these scientists who were able to take some DNA from permafrost in Greenland.
Reggie
What? DNA extracted from some permafrost in Greenland?
Dennis
Yeah, and it turns out about 200 million years ago, Greenland was bursting with life. Deer, crabs, trees, and most importantly, elephants. Wow.
Guy Raz
Really?
Dennis
Really? Oh, come on, Reg. You can see that toucan whenever you want. Guy Raz needs our help for his photo challenge.
Reggie
Yeah, Reggie. Wait, what? Toucan?
Dennis
What do you say, Guy Razi? Quick trip back in time to 2 million years ago? Uh, anything for a photo challenge.
Guy Raz
Anything for a photo challenge.
Dennis
Hooray.
Reggie
Anything for a photo challenge.
Dennis
Oh, no. Did Dennis. Not you.
Reggie
I'll be Guy Raz's chief assistant camera carrier. Now, if you could just please give me. Dennis, don't touch my camera. Don't worry, Guy. Mother says I'm a very good carrier. I have the steadiest hands this side of the. Oh. It's okay. It's okay, Dennis. Nothing to worry about.
Dennis
Let's just go with it. Guy Raz. Come on, everyone. I've got the wow machine parked right outside Andy and Hey. Okay. All right, come on, everyone. Hop inside.
Guy Raz
All right.
Reggie
Oh, buttons. What's this do? What's this do? What's. What does this do? Wow.
Dennis
Shah. So.
Guy Raz
Dennis, stop touching everything.
Dennis
See here, Gotta plug in some coordinates here. Greenland, Kap, Kobenhaven, 2 million years ago.
Guy Raz
Cap. Copenhagen.
Dennis
Oh, yeah, that's where the scientists got their permafrost DNA samples from.
Reggie
Mindy, you keep saying that word.
Dennis
What word?
Reggie
Permafrost. What is permafrost?
Dennis
Oh, well, it's basically frozen dirt.
Guy Raz
Yeah, the technical definition is that it's Earth that's been completely frozen for more than two years.
Dennis
Yeah, so? Permafrost means permanent frost.
Reggie
Well, whatever it is, it sounds delicious. Think we could stop for one on the way? What? A permafrosty or whatever. I want one.
Guy Raz
Dennis, were you listening to a word we just said?
Reggie
Yes. I mean, no. No, I wasn't.
Dennis
Let it go, Guy Raz. Come on, everyone. Let's get going. Everyone strapped in?
Guy Raz
Well, I'm trying, Mindy, but I don't see any buckles for this licorice strap seat belt.
Reggie
And I ate mine.
Dennis
Oh, yeah, right. Seatbelts. That's what I was supposed to put in last week. Whoopsie. Well, just hold on tight to something in Here.
Guy Raz
What?
Dennis
Cause here we another smooth landing.
Guy Raz
Mindy, where do you keep your barf bags again?
Dennis
Ooh, sorry, but I turned them all into paper hats months ago.
Reggie
Here, Guy, just barf in here. Oh, wait, no, that's the camera bag. That was close.
Dennis
Uh, look, everyone, I think we're here. Come on, Guy Raz, get your camera ready and let's go find you a frozen tundra.
Guy Raz
Uh, Mindy, the lush forest full of wildlife you promised.
Reggie
Yeah, it just looks like a desert. A really cold, snowy desert. I'm going back inside.
Dennis
But I don't understand. I mean, I put in the right location. Oh, good idea, Reg. Let me just check the plex capacitor again. You and Guy Raz wait here.
Guy Raz
Okay?
Dennis
Run, run, run, run, run, run.
Guy Raz
It sure is chilly out here, Reggie. Look at all that snow as far as the eye can see.
Dennis
Okay, everyone, problem solved.
Guy Raz
Well, what was the problem, Mindy?
Dennis
Well, it turns out we only traveled through space, not time.
Guy Raz
Meaning?
Dennis
Meaning that we made it to Greenland. But this is modern day Greenland and not the Greenland of 2 million years ago.
Guy Raz
I see. So you mean to tell me that this frozen tundra that we're looking at is going to somehow transform into a lush, animal filled utopia if we just go back 2 million years?
Dennis
That's exactly what I'm saying, Guy Raz. Come on, hop back in. There's no time to lose.
Guy Raz
Okay, Mindy, but it's hard to imagine a place like this ever being warm.
Dennis
Don't underestimate the power of geological time, Guy Raz. A lot can happen in 2 million years.
Guy Raz
We'll see about that.
Dennis
Okay, everyone strapped in?
Reggie
No.
Guy Raz
Once again, no seat belts.
Dennis
Okay, plugging in the coordinates here. Two million years ago. Oh, green lint. And here we.
Guy Raz
That was a little rougher than last time, Mindy.
Dennis
Yeah, probably cause there's less snow.
Guy Raz
Here's hoping.
Dennis
All right, let me just check to make sure that everything is a. Okay, Yep and yep. Two million years in the past. And a balmy 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Reggie
Or 10 degrees Celsius.
Guy Raz
That's still pretty chilly, Mindy. Not exactly balmy.
Dennis
Yeah, but remember how cold it was just a few minutes ago when we were in present day Greenland? It was like negative 40 degrees Fahrenheit. So by comparison, this place is positively boiling.
Guy Raz
Huh.
Dennis
And remember, Greenland is only about 500 miles from the North Pole. And look at this. It's light jacket weather outside.
Reggie
Good thing I brought my bikini.
Guy Raz
I don't know if it's that warm, Dennis, but it is pretty amazing. What a difference in temperature 2 million years can make.
Dennis
And you think that's amazing? Check this out.
Reggie
Oh, wow.
Dennis
Now, that's what I'm talking about.
Guy Raz
Mindy, are you sure we're still in Greenland?
Dennis
Yep.
Guy Raz
The same Greenland we were in before with that barren tundra?
Dennis
Yeah. I told you, 2 million years is a long time.
Guy Raz
I know, but this is incredible, Mindy. It's so green.
Reggie
Yeah, Greenland.
Guy Raz
And you're sure there's elephants here?
Dennis
Uh, well.
Guy Raz
Mindy.
Dennis
Okay, it's time to come clean.
Guy Raz
Mindy, there are elephants here, right?
Dennis
Technically, no.
Guy Raz
What? Mindy, that was the whole point of us coming all the way out here for me to get a photo of an elephant.
Dennis
Okay, okay, I can explain. Now, while there are no elephants here, there are mastodons.
Reggie
Good question, Reggie. Hey, Mindy, what exactly is a mastodon?
Dennis
A mastodon is a very close relative of the African elephant that used to live in North America thousands of years ago.
Reggie
Wow.
Guy Raz
Okay. And they're still beautiful.
Dennis
Oh, yeah.
Guy Raz
So beautiful and majestic.
Dennis
So majestic.
Guy Raz
Hmm.
Dennis
They're basically exactly the same as elephants, Guy Raz. Just a little hairier.
Guy Raz
Okay, Mindy, I'm sold.
Dennis
Great. Now let's go find you a mastodon. Follow me, everyone.
Guy Raz
Wow, this place really is bursting with life, Mindy.
Dennis
Yeah, I told you it would be.
Reggie
Does anyone have any mosquito spray? Ah, I keep getting. Ow. Bitten.
Dennis
Sorry, Dennis, I left all the mosquito spray at home.
Guy Raz
So, Mindy, you said you found out about this place from some ice sample?
Dennis
Close. A group of researchers found some DNA samples in a permafrost sample, which is.
Guy Raz
Sort of like an ice sample, but also has dirt and other things mixed in there, right?
Dennis
Exactly.
Guy Raz
And they were able to tell from that block of permafrost that all of this was here. All of these trees and birds and stuff.
Dennis
Yeah, even the mastodons that we're looking for right now. All of that information was located inside that permafrost, Even though the permafrost was.
Guy Raz
2 million years old?
Dennis
Yeah. Pretty bonker balls, huh? Turns out that permafrost sample was jam packed full of a bunch of DNA.
Guy Raz
And DNA is sort of like the instruction manual that lives inside every living thing.
Dennis
Exact oritos. Now, if I were to get a DNA sample from you and run it through the same machines that these researchers used, it would tell me that you were a human being.
Guy Raz
Right, but if they took DNA from Reggie, it would say that he was a pigeon.
Reggie
And what if they took a DNA sample from me?
Dennis
I'm not exactly certain what species you Are Dennis.
Reggie
Yeah. My money's on dog.
Guy Raz
So they found DNA in that 2 million year old permafrost sample?
Dennis
You know it. In fact, they found DNA from 135 different species.
Guy Raz
And I would imagine that they then put that DNA through their machines to figure out who each DNA sample belonged to. Yeah. That's incredible, Mindy. I didn't think DNA could last for that long.
Dennis
Yeah, and you're not the only one. It even surprised the scientists. The last oldest DNA sample collected was from a mammoth bone, but it was only about 1 million years old.
Guy Raz
So this DNA is pretty much twice as old as the previous record holder.
Dennis
Yeah. Pretty nuts, huh?
Guy Raz
I'll say.
Reggie
Oh, you're right, Reggie. Now I want nuts, too. Did anyone bring any trail mix?
Dennis
Nobody has trail mix, Dennis.
Reggie
Ah, nuts.
Guy Raz
Hey, Mindy, check it out. It looks like Reggie's made a friend.
Dennis
Aw, yeah, look at that guy Raz. He's so cute with his big floppy ears. I just want to eat him up. Just gonna squish his little face and boop his nose.
Guy Raz
Is that a rabbit?
Dennis
Mindy, that bunny is actually an arctic hare, which is basically a big rabbit.
Guy Raz
How do you know?
Dennis
Well, it was one of the animals they identified in those DNA samples that they found in the permafrost.
Guy Raz
Wow. What else was in there?
Dennis
Well, there was a lot of birch.
Guy Raz
Tree DNA, which I'm guessing was the result of this forest we're standing in right now.
Dennis
You know it. And there was some caribou DNA in.
Guy Raz
There, which I believe is just another name for reindeer.
Dennis
And of course, there was the one and only Mindy Mastodon.
Reggie
Hey, Guy Razzie.
Guy Raz
I can't wait to snap a photo of one Mindy and complete my photo challenge.
Dennis
I'm excited for you, too, buddy.
Guy Raz
Mindy, so what are we looking for?
Dennis
Well, the mastodon was about the same size as an African elephant, and it had a great big hairy trunk that goes. Yeah, that was a pretty great impression of a mastodon. Guy Raz.
Guy Raz
Uh, Mindy, that wasn't me.
Dennis
Uh, so that was Reggie Tennis?
Reggie
Uh, no, wasn't me.
Dennis
Uh. Oh.
Guy Raz
Master dorm.
Dennis
Dennis, give me Guy Raz's camera.
Guy Raz
What?
Reggie
What?
Dennis
Trust me.
Reggie
Okay, fine. There.
Dennis
Thank you. Okay, everyone, quick look at the camera.
Guy Raz
Mindy, this is not the time.
Reggie
Yeah, Mindy, this is not the time, but make sure you get my gun sign.
Dennis
All right, everyone say Greenland Green play. Got it?
Narrator
Yes.
Guy Raz
Thanks, Mindy.
Dennis
Yeah, no problem, Guy Razzie. Oh, wait. Dennis blinked.
Reggie
Sorry. That's okay.
Dennis
That's fine. No, no, no. No, no. Gotta take it again. Come on, everyone.
Reggie

Wow in the World Podcast Summary: "Greenland Beach Day" (Released December 23, 2024)
Hosts: Mindy Thomas and Guy Raz
Production: Tinkercast | Wondery
The episode kicks off with the charismatic hosts Mindy Thomas and Guy Raz joining their animated friends, Dennis and Reggie, for a fun-filled day at the zoo. The central theme revolves around Guy Raz’s quest to complete a photo challenge by capturing an image of something "beautiful and majestic."
Notable Quote:
Dennis [04:35]: "Well, that's actually the reason why we're here, Mindy. The last photo I need to take for my photo challenge is to get a photo of something beautiful and majestic."
Upon arriving at the zoo, the group discovers that the safari zone, home to the elephants, is unexpectedly closed due to construction. This setback propels Dennis to propose an adventurous alternative: traveling to Greenland to uncover ancient wildlife.
Dennis introduces the idea of using a time-traveling machine, affectionately named the "wow machine," to journey back 2 million years in Greenland's past. The objective is to locate mastodons—prehistoric relatives of elephants—to help Guy Raz complete his photo challenge.
Notable Quote:
Dennis [05:20]: "Greenland, it's a country full of lush forests, sandy beaches, and most importantly, incredible wildlife, including elephants."
Excitedly, the group embarks on their first time-travel adventure. However, things go awry when they realize they have only traveled through space, landing them in modern-day Greenland instead of the intended prehistoric era.
Notable Quote:
Dennis [10:42]: "Run, run, run, run, run, run."
Undeterred by the initial mishap, Dennis recalibrates the wow machine to include both spatial and temporal coordinates. This second attempt successfully transports the group back 2 million years, revealing a dramatically different Greenland—lush, vibrant, and teeming with life.
Notable Quote:
Dennis [12:25]: "Two million years in the past. And a balmy 50 degrees Fahrenheit."
The hosts delve into the fascinating topic of DNA preservation in permafrost. They explain how scientists extracted DNA from 2-million-year-old permafrost samples in Greenland, uncovering a diverse array of species that once thrived there, including mastodons.
Notable Quote:
Guy Raz [16:03]: "And DNA is sort of like the instruction manual that lives inside every living thing."
Armed with newfound knowledge, the group begins their search for mastodons. Along the way, they encounter various prehistoric creatures and engage in humorous mishaps, such as mistaking an arctic hare for a mastodon and accidentally taking playful photos.
Notable Quote:
Dennis [14:24]: "Let me just check the plex capacitor again. You and Guy Raz wait here."
Throughout their adventure, the hosts seamlessly blend entertainment with education, highlighting topics like DNA preservation, species evolution, and the impact of geological time on Earth's biodiversity. They emphasize the importance of scientific discovery and the wonders it unveils about our planet's history.
Notable Quote:
Mindy Thomas [16:03]: "DNA is sort of like the instruction manual that lives inside every living thing."
As the episode draws to a close, the group reflects on their incredible journey. While they didn't quite capture the elusive mastodon, the experience underscores the beauty of exploration and the endless possibilities that science and imagination offer.
Notable Quote:
Guy Raz [25:09]: "Thanks again for listening and until next time, be fun. Wowing."
Time Travel and Scientific Exploration: The episode creatively explores the concept of time travel to understand historical biodiversity, emphasizing how scientific advancements can bring ancient worlds to life.
DNA Preservation in Permafrost: Highlighting the remarkable preservation of DNA in permafrost, the hosts explain how this has allowed scientists to discover species that existed millions of years ago.
Humorous and Educational Storytelling: Through engaging dialogue and humorous situations, Mindy, Guy, Dennis, and Reggie make complex scientific concepts accessible and entertaining for both kids and grown-ups.
Permafrost Defined:
Reggie [08:43]: "What is permafrost?"
Dennis [08:44]: "Oh, well, it's basically frozen dirt."
Mastodons vs. Elephants:
Dennis [14:00]: "Technically, no."
Guy Raz [14:01]: "What? Mindy, that was the whole point of us coming all the way out here for me to get a photo of an elephant."
"Greenland Beach Day" masterfully combines adventure, humor, and education, offering listeners an immersive experience that sparks curiosity about science and the natural world. Whether you're a child or a grown-up, this episode is sure to inspire a sense of wonder and a desire to explore the "Wow in the World."
