Guy Raz
Proceed in 3, 2, 1.
Mindy Thomas
Get ready for an adventure of magnificent proportion.
Dennis
I don't know what you've been told. We're in a golden age.
Mindy Thomas
Many discoveries that are jumping off the page.
Thomas Fingerling
Ah, there's nothing quite like a good old fashioned camping trip. The crisp South Carolina air, the smell of a campfire, the peace and quiet of nature.
Dennis
G Force, stop poking me with that stick.
Grandma G Force
I ain't poking you with nothing, boy.
Dennis
Oh, Guy Raz, she did it again.
Guy Raz
Well, that was me that time.
Dennis
Guy Raz, J Force, and Tommy are poking me with their marshmallow sticks.
Reggie
Did someone say marshmallows?
Grandma G Force
No.
Thomas Fingerling
Mindy, you made it back.
Reggie
Yeah, sorry. I had to go to like three different gas stations just to find these marshmallows. But check it out. Key lime pie flavored marshmallows. Super rare, super tasty.
Dennis
Oh, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme.
Thomas Fingerling
Sounds delicious, Mindy.
Grandma G Force
Pass.
Guy Raz
Yeah, pass. We got our own snacks.
Thomas Fingerling
Why in the.
Guy Raz
All right, G Force, what do you want?
Grandma G Force
Well, I'll take a boot.
Guy Raz
Leather boot.
Thomas Fingerling
Huh?
Guy Raz
All right, good choice.
Reggie
You're going to eat a boat boot.
Guy Raz
Oh, calm down. We're gonna cook the boot first. There we go, tummy. Okay, GeForce, you want the midsole or the laces?
Grandma G Force
Well, I think I'm gonna fix me up part of that heel.
Guy Raz
Okay. There you go.
Reggie
All right, well, who's up for some scary stories?
Guy Raz
Let's do it.
Dennis
Who's gonna tell a scary story first?
Guy Raz
Me. I got one.
Grandma G Force
Fingerling, you couldn't scare a squirrel off a bird feeder.
Guy Raz
Oh, I wouldn't be too sure about that.
Dennis
I'm scared.
Guy Raz
Once upon a time, a family was going on vacation to a beautiful secluded cabin in the woods.
Mindy Thomas
We're going on vacation.
Dennis
We're going on vacation to a beautiful.
Mindy Thomas
Secluded cabin in the woods.
Guy Raz
But when they arrived at the cabin.
Dennis
Hello, family. We've arrived at the cabin.
Guy Raz
They realized, let's just open the door.
Mindy Thomas
Here and walk inside.
Guy Raz
Something was wrong.
Mindy Thomas
This is all wrong.
Guy Raz
Something horrifyingly wrong.
Dennis
Oh, no. What was it?
Guy Raz
It turns out the beautiful, secluded cavern in the woods had no WI fi.
Thomas Fingerling
That's it. The cabin didn't have WI fi.
Dennis
What do you. And that's it. The cabin probably only had a wired Ethernet connection.
Guy Raz
Exactly.
Reggie
Ooh.
Dennis
No. It's terrifying.
Reggie
Terrifyingly inconvenient. Maybe Fingerling.
Grandma G Force
That ain't scary. This is scary. Once upon a time, two best friends went out to watch a movie at their local movie theater.
Mindy Thomas
I love watching movies at our local movie theater.
Reggie
Whoa.
Dennis
Me too, best friend.
Grandma G Force
And as they left the theater, both of them said goodbye to each other.
Mindy Thomas
Bye, best friend.
Dennis
See you later, best friend.
Grandma G Force
But then, out of the nowheres, they both walked in the same direction for a little bit.
Reggie
Going the same direction, huh?
Thomas Fingerling
I guess so.
Grandma G Force
And it was super awkward. Awkward, awkward, awkward.
Dennis
Oh, no. Now they can't make eye contact. Probably.
Thomas Fingerling
I don't know. Here, guys. These don't seem that scary to me.
Reggie
Yeah, me neither, guy Raz. But fear not. I've got a real good spooky story for everyone. Sit back and watch how a pro tells a spooky story. A long time ago, not too far from here in South Carolina, in a town called Somerville, a wife was sending her husband off to work on the railroads.
Guy Raz
Well, I'm off to work the railroads, dear. See you in a couple of weeks.
Grandma G Force
Yeah, yeah, whatever.
Thomas Fingerling
Wait, Mindy, are these the same railroad tracks that we crossed to get to this campsite?
Reggie
Yep, the very same guy, Raz. Anyhoo, eventually the wife's husband did return from his work on the railroads.
Guy Raz
Honey, I'm almost home.
Grandma G Force
Oh, goody.
Reggie
But just before he got back to his wife, just as he was crossing the tracks, a train came rattling down the railway behind him.
Grandma G Force
Oh, no. Watch out, Hubson. You're gonna get hit by that.
Guy Raz
I'll be fine.
Thomas Fingerling
Oop.
Guy Raz
Never mind.
Reggie
The train scattered his body into a thousand different pieces.
Guy Raz
Well, looks like I made a mess. I had a finger over there, a toe way over there. How am I ever gonna put myself back together again?
Reggie
It was his wife who ended up spending her remaining days retrieving the pieces of her scattered and splattered husband.
Grandma G Force
Now, how in the haystack am I supposed to pick up all these pieces? They're all over the place, Hubson.
Guy Raz
Sorry, dear.
Reggie
The old lady ended up dying before she could pick up all the pieces of her husband. So now it's said that she still spends her afterlife haunting those railroad tracks, still looking for all the guts that were strewn all over the place.
Grandma G Force
You mean I still gotta clean up his mess even after I'm dead?
Reggie
They say that on some summer nights, you can still see the eerie glow from her lantern hanging in the air above the train tracks, searching for the rest of time.
Guy Raz
Oh, goodness.
Thomas Fingerling
Now that's what I call a good ghost story.
Dennis
I didn't like that one. It was too scary and splattery.
Reggie
Aw, Dennis. It's okay. It's not a real story.
Thomas Fingerling
Mindy.
Reggie
Just a second, Guy Raz. I'm trying to console Dennis. Look, there's no railroad worker, Dennis. There's no old lady picking up her husband's guts piece by piece.
Dennis
It's all just make believe, Mindy.
Reggie
One second, Guy Raz. And finally, Dennis, there is Dolphin Ately. No haunted light.
Dennis
Mindy.
Mindy Thomas
What?
Dennis
Look. What is that?
Thomas Fingerling
It looks like a floating, glowing light.
Guy Raz
It's the old lady. She's back to find her husband.
Dennis
You mean it's a. A ghost?
Reggie
Okay, okay, everyone just calm down. It is not a ghost. There's a logical scientific explanation for this. I can explain.
Dennis
No way. It's every Dennis for himself. Run.
Reggie
No, Dennis.
Dennis
No. Come back.
Guy Raz
Oh, hey, look at that. The weird, mysterious floating light is disappearing.
Grandma G Force
Well, it looks like I was able to scare off that ghost for everyone.
Reggie
It wasn't a ghost, Grandma. G force. That's what I was trying to tell everyone before Dennis ran away.
Grandma G Force
Well, if it wasn't a ghost, then what was it?
Reggie
It was a.
Thomas Fingerling
Yes.
Reggie
It was a.
Mindy Thomas
Yes.
Reggie
It was an earthquake light.
Thomas Fingerling
A what?
Grandma G Force
That sounds made up.
Guy Raz
Yeah, sounds like another scary story.
Reggie
It's not made up. Come on, I'll explain it to you all while we look for Dennis. We can't leave him out there in the woods all by himself.
Guy Raz
Why not? Are there bears out there?
Grandma G Force
Well, I would sure hope so. It's been too long since I tangled with a bear. Need to get some practice in.
Thomas Fingerling
What?
Reggie
No. Nobody is wrestling any bears. We just need to find Dennis.
Thomas Fingerling
Yeah, last time he was in the woods by himself, he was mistaken for a giraffe and got tranquilized by animal control.
Dennis
TRA la la. Walking in the woods by myself today.
Guy Raz
There it is. The escaped giraffe. Get it.
Dennis
What? I'm not a giraffe. I'm a real boy.
Guy Raz
That's exactly, exactly what an escaped giraffe would say.
Dennis
Oh.
Reggie
Yeah, that wasn't Pretty.
Thomas Fingerling
All right, everyone, grab your flashlights. Let's go look for Dennis.
Reggie
Yeah, come on, follow me, everyone. Walk, walk, walk. Turning on my flashlight. Okay, everyone, now keep an eye out for Dennis. Dennis. Here.
Dennis
Dennis. Dennis.
Reggie
Dennis, where are you?
Thomas Fingerling
So, Mindy, can you explain what we just saw? What was that floating light?
Reggie
Oh, well, like I said, Guy Raz, it's called an earthquake light.
Thomas Fingerling
Earthquake light? I've never heard of that before.
Reggie
Well, it's a pretty rare geological phenomenon.
Thomas Fingerling
Geological phenomenon? You mean something to do with geology? The study of rocks.
Reggie
Exact oritos.
Thomas Fingerling
So you're saying that that light that we just saw hovering above the ground had something to do with the rocks beneath our feet?
Reggie
Yep, and it only happens in very specific circumstances and in very special places. I mean, why do you think I invited you all out to Somerville, South Carolina?
Thomas Fingerling
Well, I assumed it was because you wanted to have a nice, relaxing time outside of the city with all your friends.
Reggie
Well, that's true, Guy Raz, but it's only half true. The other half of that truth is that I wanted to see this earthquake light for myself.
Thomas Fingerling
Uh huh. And this specific location in South Carolina is a place where it happens.
Reggie
You know it.
Guy Raz
Oh, hey, look over there. I think I see him.
Grandma G Force
Yep, that's him all right.
Guy Raz
Hey, feller, why are you just standing there?
Dennis
What?
Reggie
No, that's not Dennis. Mr. Fingerling, that's just a very skinny tree.
Grandma G Force
Oh, is that him?
Guy Raz
Oh, yeah, there he is. That's him.
Thomas Fingerling
No, that's just another tree.
Guy Raz
Okay, fine, what about that then?
Reggie
No, those are all just skinny trees. They just have the same haircut as Dennis. Come on, keep moving.
Thomas Fingerling
So, Mindy, how exactly does this earthquake light occur?
Reggie
Well, you need two things. First, you need to be far away from the edge of a tectonic plate.
Thomas Fingerling
And tectonic plates are like the giant puzzle pieces that make up the earth's crust that are deep underground.
Reggie
Yeah, and when they move or bump into each other, they can cause earthquakes.
Thomas Fingerling
Right, so ideally, you want to be as far away as possible from the edges of these puzzle pieces.
Reggie
Yeah, and then the other thing you need is to be in an area that has lots of magnesium and iron.
Thomas Fingerling
Which are both types of metal that can be found in the ground.
Reggie
Yeah, in Somerville, South Carolina, where these earthquake lights have been spotted checks both of those boxes.
Thomas Fingerling
Okay, but how does being far from a tectonic plate and also being in an area with lots of magnesium and iron cause these spooky floating lights?
Reggie
Well, there are lots of theories, Guy Raz. I mean, this Sort of thing has actually been observed all over the world. But one theory suggests that when the ground shakes ever so slightly from an earthquake, the iron and magnesium gets bent and squished. And this causes an electrical charge.
Thomas Fingerling
Huh. Kind of like when you rub two balloons together, it creates a static charge.
Reggie
Exactly. And this electrical charge can then travel up to the surface of the earth and create an electrical field that causes the molecules in the air to glow.
Thomas Fingerling
The electrical charges from the ground cause the air to glow?
Reggie
Yeah. Sort of like how particles from the sun can excite the air around the North Pole and create the northern lights.
Thomas Fingerling
So the glowing orb we just saw was actually some air that was excited by some metal in the ground shaking from a really small earthquake.
Reggie
You got it.
Thomas Fingerling
So no ghost?
Reggie
Nope. It's something even more spectacular than a ghost Guy Raz. It's science.
Guy Raz
Oh, hey, there he is.
Reggie
I found him.
Grandma G Force
No, you didn't. I did.
Guy Raz
No, me.
Reggie
No, that's not Dennis. That's just a very old and decrepit sign.
Thomas Fingerling
Oh, look, Mindy. Behind the signpost.
Dennis
Mindy? Guy Raz, is that you? Dennis, we found you. Don't come any closer.
Guy Raz
What's the matter, feller? You don't recognize old Thomas Fingerling?
Dennis
How do I know you're not a ghost?
Grandma G Force
Well, could a ghost do this?
Dennis
What? Ow. Grandma J Bar, stop wrestling me.
Reggie
We're not ghosts, Dennis. Ghosts don't exist.
Dennis
Ah, really? Then what was that giant floating orb of light I saw back there?
Thomas Fingerling
It's a geological phenomenon called earthquake light.
Reggie
Yeah, and we can tell you all about it on the way back to.
Dennis
Oh. Phew. You know what? I thought it might be an earthquake light. Didn't I say it was an earthquake light, Reggie? Yes, I did, too. What was that?
Thomas Fingerling
Mindy, I thought you said there weren't any bears in these woods.
Reggie
Yeah, about that.
Grandma G Force
Bears. Bears.
Reggie
Maybe we should move a little faster.
Guy Raz
Yeah, that sounds like a good idea.
Grandma G Force
Come here, bears. Oh, man.
Dennis
Much faster. Ramadan.
Reggie
So, basically, Dennis, earthquake lightning happens when you're far away from a tectonic plate and there's lots of magnesium and iron in the ground.
Dennis
Not right now, Mindy.
Grandma G Force
Hit me here. Where's me.
Aisha
Wow in the world?

Episode Release Date: June 9, 2025
Hosts: Mindy Thomas and Guy Raz
Produced by: Tinkercast | Wondery
In this captivating episode of Wow in the World, hosts Mindy Thomas and Guy Raz, alongside characters Dennis, Grandma G Force, Reggie, and Thomas Fingerling, embark on a camping adventure in Somerville, South Carolina. The episode masterfully combines storytelling with scientific exploration, turning what initially appears to be a ghostly encounter into a fascinating lesson on natural phenomena.
The episode kicks off with the group settling into their camping spot, enjoying the serene South Carolina wilderness. As night falls, the conversation shifts to sharing scary stories around the campfire.
Guy Raz sets the stage with a spooky narrative:
"[03:06] Guy Raz: Once upon a time, a family was going on vacation to a beautiful secluded cabin in the woods... something horrifyingly wrong."
The group exchanges humorous and lighthearted attempts at frightening each other, with Grandma G Force playfully dismissing simple fears:
"[04:27] Mindy Thomas: I love watching movies at our local movie theater.
[04:31] Dennis: Me too, best friend."
This playful banter sets the tone for the night's storytelling.
As the night deepens, Reggie introduces a more eerie story about a widow who haunts railroad tracks after her husband's tragic demise:
"[05:09] Reggie: A long time ago, not too far from here in South Carolina, in a town called Somerville, a wife was sending her husband off to work on the railroads."
The tale crescendos with the husband's untimely death by a train and the wife's eternal search for his remains:
"[07:19] Grandma G Force: You mean I still gotta clean up his mess even after I'm dead?
[07:39] Guy Raz: Oh, goodness."
This story heightens the suspense, leading to a pivotal moment when the group spots a mysterious floating light in the woods.
Initially perceiving the floating light as a ghostly apparition, the group reacts with a mix of fear and curiosity:
"[08:20] Dennis: It looks like a floating, glowing light.
[08:34] Reggie: No, it’s an earthquake light. There’s a logical scientific explanation for this."
Reggie demystifies the phenomenon by explaining "earthquake lights," a rare geological occurrence:
"[12:16] Reggie: Well, you need two things. First, you need to be far away from the edge of a tectonic plate.
[13:11] Reggie: When the ground shakes ever so slightly from an earthquake, the iron and magnesium gets bent and squished. This causes an electrical charge..."
He elaborates on how the interaction of tectonic plates and specific minerals in the ground generates electrical charges that illuminate the air, creating the mesmerizing floating lights:
"[14:01] Thomas Fingerling: So the glowing orb we just saw was actually some air that was excited by some metal in the ground shaking from a really small earthquake.
[14:14] Reggie: Nope. It’s something even more spectacular than a ghost. It’s science."
This scientific insight transforms the group's understanding, showcasing how natural phenomena can often be mistaken for supernatural events.
Amidst the scientific discussion, the group engages in a lighthearted search for Dennis, who playfully hides and confuses himself with the surroundings:
"[10:07] Reggie: All right, everyone, grab your flashlights. Let’s go look for Dennis."
The humorous interactions continue as Dennis emerges, initially mistrusting the scientific explanation but ultimately relieved to learn the truth:
"[15:07] Thomas Fingerling: Mindy, I thought you said there weren’t any bears in these woods.
[15:37] Guy Raz: Yeah, that sounds like a good idea."
The episode wraps up with a reaffirmation of science's role in explaining the mysterious:
"[14:20] Guy Raz: Oh, hey, there he is.
[14:22] Reggie: I found him."
Through engaging storytelling and scientific explanation, Wow in the World not only entertains but also educates its young audience about geological phenomena. The hosts successfully bridge the gap between myth and science, encouraging curiosity and critical thinking.
Earthquake Lights: A rare geological phenomenon caused by electrical charges from tectonic plate movements interacting with magnesium and iron in the ground.
Science vs. Supernatural: The episode emphasizes the importance of scientific inquiry in demystifying seemingly supernatural occurrences.
Engaging Education: Through humor and relatable storytelling, complex scientific concepts are made accessible and interesting for children and their families.
Guy Raz on Ghost Stories:
"[03:06]...something horrifyingly wrong."
Reggie's Explanation of Earthquake Lights:
"[13:32]...this electrical charge can then travel up to the surface of the earth and create an electrical field that causes the molecules in the air to glow."
Thomas Fingerling on Understanding the Phenomenon:
"[14:12] So no ghost?"
Reggie’s Assurance:
"[14:14] Nope. It’s something even more spectacular than a ghost. It’s science."
Wow in the World: Summerville Lights – A Scientific Ghost Story brilliantly intertwines storytelling with scientific exploration, making learning an exhilarating adventure for listeners of all ages.
