We wow on the weekend. We wow on the weekend. We wow on the weekend. Cause this is what we do on the weekend. Talking, laughing. Me and Reggie singing, laughing. And then we. Oh, wait, no, I said laughing twice. Whatever. We wow on the weekend. Yeah, we wow on the weekend. Laugh, clap me wow on the weekend. What we do on the weekend. Hello and welcome to Wee Wow on the Weekend. I'm your host, Dennis, and that's Reggie, my co host. This is the show where we hang out in my mother's basement, listen to episodes of Tinkercast shows and answer questions from my devoted listeners. So let's get to the first segment. Reggie, should we do Q and A segment or reading reviewsies? What? You have an idea for a segment that's so exciting. What is it? Ooh, the slumber segment. What's that? Okay, you get a pillow and a blanket. Then what? And then you lay down. Then what? And then you go to sleep. Veggie. Are you just trying to take a nap? No, no naps. We're in the middle of a show. You can n. Reggie, wake up. We're not doing slumber segment. No, we're gonna do a Q and A segment. The Q and A segment. Alright, let's just get the old answering machine pulled up here. Okay, Here we go. Hi, you've reached Dennis from Wee wow on the Weekend. That's me. Do you have a question? Well, I do too. Lots of them. And who's gonna answer all my questions? You? Probably not. But I guess I can answer yours. Leave me a message.
Mindy
Hey, Dennis, my name is Theo and I have a question for you.
Dennis
Okay, go ahead, Theo.
Mindy
What was the secret to growing your prize winning azaleas? P.S. i think wee wow on the weekend is awesome.
Dennis
Yay. Thank you, Theo. You are correct. Wee wow on the weekend is awesome. And as for my prize winning azaleas, obviously I water them and pull up weeds and make sure they get the right amount of sunlight. But the real secret to prize winning azaleas is you have to gossip with them every day. Yes, Reggie, every day. If you whisper three secrets to them every day by 4pm it makes their petals extra lustrous. Then the other thing I do is enter them in lots of contests. Because, Reggie, they need compliments in the form of prizes. If they don't win prizes, then they're just regular azaleas, not prize winning azaleas. Well, just this week, my azaleas have won both the prettiest flower award and the most azalea est azaleas award. But also, sometimes I enter them in non flower contests. Yeah, last week they won a hot dog eating contest. Reggie, they won because they're prize winning. Next question.
Mindy
Hi, Dennis, my name is Micah and I live in Austin, Texas. My question for you is. What does baby Dennis think of flying a plane?
Dennis
What does baby Dennis think of flying a plane? Well, let's ask him. Oh, baby Dennis. What is it, Big Dennis? Where are you? Baby Dennis is over here up on the shelf. Oh, baby Dennis, what are you doing on the shelf? Didn't I leave you in a cardboard box? Baby Dennis moves in mysterious ways. Okay, don't love that. Well, anyway, Baby Dennis, Micah has a question for you. Oh, what is it, Micah? What do you think of flying a plane? Oh, Baby Dennis loves flying planes. Really? Yeah. Baby Dennis already has his pilot's license. No, you don't. Yes, baby, Dennis does. Okay, well, then fly me to Hawaii. That will be $5,000.
Mindy
What?
Dennis
Oh, never mind. Next question.
Mindy
Hi, Dennis. I'm Sophia from Wylie, Texas.
Dennis
Hi, Sophia.
Mindy
And I wanted to know, if you put your last shoe on the wrong foot, is it technically on the right foot? I'm confused on that one.
Dennis
Okay, if you put your left shoe on the wrong foot, is it technically on the right foot? Well, that's easy, Sophia. Your shoe is not on the right foot because the left shoe is on the right foot. Wait. Your left shoe is on your right foot, which is the wrong foot, because it's your left shoe on your right foot, which is wrong. Well, now I'm confused, too, Sophia. I think the answer is just to never wear shoes ever again. Thanks for all your calls, everyone. If you've got a question for me, call and leave me a message. The number is 1-888-7-WOW. WOW. That's 1-888-7-NWOW. WOW. I just. Your question on WEWOW on the weekend. Okay, that takes care of that. Reggie, are you still awake? Okay, good. Next up is a little segment I like to call Inside Tinkercast Studios. Ahem. Inside Tinkercast Studios. This is the part where we revisit an episode of one of my favorite Tinkercast shows. And today we're listening to wow. In the World, Season 2, Episode 28, called how to Sweep youp Way to Victory. No, Reggie, stay awake. Okay. Okay, here we go. And play wee.
Mindy
Wow. We'll be right back, Grown ups. This message is for you. That's it. Now back to the show. What in the world? All right, let me just get this thing ready to play. Oh, yeah. All right, Mindy, are you ready to brush your teeth? You bet I am, mindy. Okay, and 1, and 2, and 3 and 4. And brush your teeth up and down. Brush, brush, all around. Okay, now sit. Sit, sit, sit. Oh, yeah. Good job, Mindy. Thanks, Mindy. Don't mention it. Go show off those beautiful pearly white. I will, Mindy. Now, where did I put that mouthwash? Whoa. Mindy, what is happening? Earthquake? T. Rex? Is it that gang of raccoons I was laughing at the other day? Oh, no. My gingerbread mansion is collapsing in on itself. No. I should have used whole wheat flowers. Bread Escape. Oh, man, not again. That's the third time I've had to rebake this mansion this week. Where is that coming from, Mindy? I don't know. Is it coming from Guy Raz's house? Hmm. Run, run, run, run, run, run. Uh, Hello? Guy Raz.
Reggie
That's not a necktie. This is a.
Mindy
Guy Raz. Wake up before you snore the whole neighborhood down.
Reggie
You, sir, have insulted my honor.
Mindy
What?
Reggie
I challenge you to a thumb war.
Mindy
Guy Raz. Guy Raz. Ugh, this is never gonna work. Where's that emergency wake up kit? Ah, here it is. Smelling salts, a pail of water. Aha. Air horn. Perfect. Sorry in advance. Guy Raz.
Reggie
Where am I? Is the queen over?
Mindy
Guy Raz, snap out of it.
Reggie
Mindy. What are you doing in my room? What time is it?
Mindy
Guy Raz, I came over here to wake you up.
Reggie
Wake me up? Mindy. This is the first decent night's sleep I've had all week.
Mindy
Really? Man, you should get into Remy. He's a lifesaver.
Reggie
Remy? Who's Remy?
Mindy
Remy, the sleep coach. He's been helping me get ready for the big competition tomorrow.
Reggie
The biggest big competition. What are you talking about?
Mindy
Guy Raz. Don't tell me you forgot about it. The annual NPR three point basketball competition.
Reggie
Oh, right, of course.
Mindy
And it's all going down tomorrow at dawn.
Reggie
And this Remy guy is supposedly gonna help you with this?
Mindy
Yeah, he says a few extra hours in bed every night can help me sleep my way to victory.
Reggie
Well, that does make sense.
Mindy
Uh huh. And this year I know I'll win. I'm gonna give that Ira Glass the fight of his American life.
Reggie
And this guy, right, Remy? Is he the one to help you do it?
Mindy
Yeah, I'm surprised you haven't heard of him yet. He's all over tv. Here, check it out.
Remy
Are you not as fast as you wanna be? Do you find yourself losing a Peabody award winning journalists every single year?
Reggie
That's oddly specific. Shhh.
Remy
If that sounds familiar, then boy, do I have a solution for you. Sleep your way to victory boot camp.
Reggie
Sleep your way to victory boot camp.
Remy
That's right. My sleep your way to victory boot camp will teach you the fundamentals of snoozing, dozing and napping. All to make sure that you can achieve all of your journalistic and athletic goals. Sign up today. Oversleeping may result in cranky parents, missed school, and comparisons to sloths, koalas, and other generally lazy animals.
Mindy
See, Guy Raz, this is the guy who's been helping me get ready for the three point competition. And I gotta tell you, my sleep hygiene has never been better.
Reggie
Sleep hygiene?
Mindy
Yeah, so sleep hygiene is really just a fancy pants way of saying a good night's sleep. So I've been getting my eight hours limiting my Screen time before bed and saying no to coffee.
Dennis
Best part of waking up.
Mindy
No coffee.
Reggie
Uh huh.
Mindy
In fact, I was just getting ready to go see Remy for another session. You wanna come?
Reggie
I don't know, Mind. It seems pretty late. Okay, Zoodle, what's the time?
Mindy
The Time, also known as Morris Day and the Time, an American musical group that was formed in Minneapolis is.
Reggie
No, no, no, no, Zoodle, what's the Time now in Time, an American dystopian.
Mindy
Science fiction action thriller film starring Justin zo. Guy Raz. Id. 8:30.
Reggie
8:30. Mindy, it's the middle of the night for you.
Mindy
Well, when's a better time to practice sleeping than the middle of the night?
Reggie
I guess that's true.
Mindy
So you'll come?
Reggie
Sure. I mean, it couldn't hurt, right? Let me just get my stuff together. Posturepedic pillow, silk eye mask. Uh, Mindy?
Mindy
Yeah?
Reggie
Could you pass me my dehumidifier and static noise generator? Well, I think that's everything.
Mindy
All right, let me just give Reggie a quick call. Think he just got off of his Goober shift.
Reggie
He's driving for Goober now.
Mindy
Oh, yeah. He needed the extra cash, so, you.
Reggie
Know, tough times, I guess.
Mindy
Dial, dial, dial, dial, dial. It's ringing. Oh, hey, Reg. How's it going? Great. Okay, so we need a favor. I know, I know. Yeah, we just need a quick lift. Not far. Surging. Okay, fine. Thanks, Reg. See you soon. He's on his way.
Reggie
Perfect. All right, can you help me carry all this stuff downstairs?
Mindy
Yeah, sure thing, Guy Raz. Waddle, waddle.
Reggie
Oh, wait. Almost forgot. My night cap.
Dennis
Water.
Mindy
Okay, there we go. Now. Oh, hey, Reggie. Reggie, over here. Nice wheels. All right, Guy Raz, hop on in.
Reggie
Wait. Reggie is driving a car for Goober. Are you sure this car is safe?
Mindy
Of course I'm not sure it's safe, Guy Raz. Now get in.
Reggie
Well, okay.
Mindy
Seat belts on. I like to wear all of them. Okay, Reg, we're gonna need you to take us to the Sleep Gym. It's on the corner of Broken Dreams Boulevard and Memory Lane.
Reggie
I really don't think this is necessary.
Mindy
Well, neither is breathing, Guy Raz. And you do that all day long. Y'all strapped in?
Reggie
I think so.
Mindy
Good, because here we go. What a trip. You gotta take us driving more often, Reg. Remember to tip your driver, Guy Raz. Okay, Reg, we gotta run or sleep. You know what I mean? Catch you later. Well, here we are, Guy Raz. The Sleep Gym.
Reggie
Oh, yeah, I can see the sign. The Sleep Gym. Plenty of rest. So you can beat the best, huh?
Mindy
You ready?
Reggie
As I'll ever be.
Mindy
All right, let's go, buddy.
Remy
Okay, you sleepyheads, are you ready for another set? All right, you asked for it. Now drop down and give me three cycles.
Reggie
Cycles? What is he talking about, Mindy?
Mindy
Well, shh.
Reggie
Sorry.
Mindy
I think he's talking about sleep cycles. You know, the different stages that your body goes through when you close your eyes.
Reggie
Wait, you mean when I close my eyes and doze off, my body is still working out?
Mindy
Yep. That's why sleep is so important, Guy Raz. And my ticket to winning that three point basketball competition.
Reggie
I don't know, Mindy. I mean, all these people, they don't even look like they're sleeping their way to anything.
Mindy
Well, it might not look like they're doing anything, Guy Raz, but there's actually a lot of important work happening inside your body when you go to sleep.
Remy
Okay, stage one. Here we go.
Reggie
So what are these stages of sleep?
Mindy
Okay, so stage one is called light sleep, where you can still drift in and out of consciousness.
Reggie
Right, and consciousness is a scientific term for being aware of what's going on around you.
Mindy
Yeah. So in this stage of sleep, it's still super easy to wake people up. Like I said, it's still very easy to wake people up. At this stage, your eyes kind of move slowly from side to side under your eyelids, and your muscles start to slow down.
Reggie
Right, so what's next?
Mindy
Coming up next is stage two.
Remy
We're about to enter stage two. Are you ready? Because here we go.
Mindy
In stage two, your eyes stop moving and your brain waves start to slow down.
Reggie
And brain waves are basically a measurement of how active your brain is. Right?
Mindy
Right. So in stage two, your brain waves slow down, your body temperature drops, and your heart rate slows down as your body prepares for deep sleep.
Reggie
Deep sleep.
Mindy
Yep. Stage three.
Remy
Okay, everyone, let's get you into some deep, deep sleep.
Mindy
Oh, man, I keep forgetting how loud deep sleep is. Guy Raz, this must have been the stage you were in when I woke you up earlier.
Reggie
You might be right, Mindy.
Mindy
And in this stage of the sleep cycle, it's very hard to wake people up.
Reggie
Tell me about it. You had to bust out the emergency air horn.
Mindy
And it's the stage where sleep walking or sleep talking can happen.
Reggie
Go on.
Mindy
Okay, so these very slow brain waves are called delta waves. And some scientists believe that when you're in this state of sleep, your body goes into a sort of full on recovery mode, releasing hormones, which, by the way, are the chemicals in your brain that help you grow big and strong. Anywho, it starts repairing your immune system, your body's inner defense system, and organizing all of the learning you did that day into a long term storage in your brain.
Reggie
Huh? So that's it?
Mindy
Well, not exactly. So after you reach stage three, your body starts to come back down through stage two.
Remy
Okay, sleepyheads, let's bring it back. Stage two.
Mindy
And stage one.
Remy
And stage one. Good work everybody. Now for the most important part.
Reggie
Wait a minute, there's more?
Mindy
Yep. After cycling through all the different stages of sleep, your body goes through one more stage before starting it all up again.
Reggie
And what is it?
Remy
Here we go. Get ready for it.
Mindy
It's called REM sleep.
Reggie
R E M sleep.
Mindy
You know it, Guy Raz. During this phase between cycles, your breathing speeds up, your heart rate goes up, and so does your blood pressure. And most importantly, your eyes begin to dart rapidly back and forth under your eyelids. REM sleep stands for rapid eye movement Sleep.
Reggie
Huh? And so that's it. That's the sleep cycle.
Mindy
That's it. And then it starts all over again.
Remy
Alright, good work everyone. Now, who's ready for one more? Okay, here we go.
Mindy
So typically a person will go through about four or five of these cycles a night, with each cycle lasting about 90 minutes or so.
Reggie
That's so fascinating, Mindy, but.
Mindy
Oh boy.
Reggie
I think I'm gonna see if I can catch a few Z's with this class before your big game. Can you pass me that blanket over there?
Mindy
Well, I still need to catch up on my sleep too.
Reggie
Well, like I was saying earlier, Mindy, it turns out that sleeping is super important when it comes to athletic performance.
Mindy
Really?
Reggie
Really. Check out this video for this new study out of Stanford University in California. Just wake me up when you're done, okay?
Mindy
Guy Raz? I'm not just gonna. Ooh, popcorn. Okay, let's see what this study is all about. Says here on the tape, sleep an athletic performance in basketball players.
Remy
Hey there, I'm Remy from the world famous sleep your way to victory boot camp.
Mindy
Remy.
Remy
That's right. Now I know what you're thinking. What's the science? To back up all this news and success?
Mindy
That is what I was thinking.
Remy
Well, lucky for you, my good friend Guy Paz.
Reggie
Thank you. But it's actually Raz.
Remy
What? Whatever. My good friend Guy Raz will explain to you why you need my program, Mr. Guys.
Reggie
Well, hey there, sleepyheads.
Mindy
Guy Raz, what are you doing? In this video?
Reggie
A group of scientists from Stanford University wanted to see what effect sleep had on basketball players. So the first thing they did was to get a bunch of basketball players on their regular amount of sleep to perform a bunch of drills like sprinting, shooting and reaction time.
Mindy
Yeah, and then?
Reggie
And then the scientists measured how well these athletes performed, doing the same tasks, but with an extra few hours of bed rest.
Mindy
And what did they find?
Reggie
They found that the athletes had faster sprint times. Their basketball shooting accuracy had improved by 9% from the free throw line and 9.2% when shooting three pointers. And the players showed much faster reaction times.
Remy
Think fast.
Reggie
Ouch.
Dennis
What?
Remy
Haha. Looks like this guy needs a couple more cycles. Hey, join us next week when we.
Mindy
Hey, that's enough of you. Thank you very much. Right now. What? Hey look. The sunrise. The three point basketball competition. Guy Raz. Guy Raz, wake up. It's dawn.
Reggie
We're gonna miss the competition.
Mindy
Come on.
Reggie
Where am I?
Mindy
We're at the sleep gym, but that's enough snoozin for you, buddy. We've got a basketball game to win.
Reggie
A basketball game? Oh yeah, the NPR three point shootout.
Mindy
Sorry. Yeah, and we better get a move on it if we want to make it there in time. The court's just next door. Come on.
Reggie
Well, that's awfully convenient.
Mindy
Okay, now I think it's right down this hall here. Hey, by the way, I never knew you did videos for the sleep gym.
Reggie
Well, I tried to tell you, Mindy, but you kept cutting me.
Mindy
This is it.
Dennis
Welcome everyone to the NPR three point shooty hoops competition. Now that we're all here, we can begin the trash talking portion of this athletic pastime.
Mindy
I'm ready to run.
Dennis
Today on the program, Mindy gets her butt kicked and then has to go crying home to her mother, who is also sad that Mindy got her butt kicked.
Mindy
Not this time, Ira.
Dennis
All right, challengers, take your places. When you're ready. Is everyone ready? Excellent. In three, two, one, shoot. Basket.
Mindy
Mindy, you did it.
Reggie
I guess all that sleep really did pay off. Mindy.
Dennis
Wow, that was so cool. Reggie, did you know all that stuff about sleep cycles and rapid eye movement? Veggie. Reggie. Reggie, I said, did you know all that stuff about sleep cycles and rapid eye movement? Me neither. Now I kind of want to take a nap. Let's go upstairs and find a place to lay down. Oh yeah. Let's wrap up the show first. Thanks to all you listeners out there for tuning in to Wee Wow on the weekend. If you have a question for me, call and leave me a message at 1-888-7www. Wow. That's 1-8887-www wow. I just might answer your question on wee wow on the weekend. I'm tired, Reggie. Let's go. Okay. I'm gonna nap on the couch. Where are you gonna nap? The hammock. No, no.
