And the best thing about these fish tacos are the actual fish.

No, no, it doesn't mean that. It actually means that the fish in these tacos aren't overfished. That's all it means.

Ah, yes, because too many fish around the world, like cod and halibut and tuna, are overfished. And when too many fish are caught by fishing boats, it means there aren't enough fish left in the oceans.

And then it becomes harder for them, those fish left in the oceans, to make more fish.

[Guy Raz]

Which means that if we don't stop overfishing in our oceans, we may not have any more fish at all one day.

Which means no more fish tacos.

But there are ways that we can help Mindy.

Well, for starters, one way is by being really careful with the kind of fish you eat. So, for example, sardines and anchovies and mackerel are all great choices because they're not as overfished as other species of fish.

So I guess we should all learn about what kinds of fish are sustainable.

[Guy Raz]

Exactly. Which is why wild Alaskan salmon is a good option. Because back in 1973, the state of Alaska created a special law that protects the salmon from too many fishing boats. And plus, Alaska protects the places where the salmon swim and lay their eggs. And all of this is what allows the salmon to Grow and thrive.

[Mindy Thomas]

So that's why Alaskan salmon is sustainable.

[Guy Raz]

Well, all that fish taco talk got me in the mood for some Peruvian chicken. But the other reason why is that Peru is where you can find lot lots and lots of fish oil factories.

[Guy Raz]

Wow. How come?

[Mindy Thomas]

Well, a lot of the fish oil that ends up in our fish oil capsules and tablets comes from smaller fish like sardines and anchovies and even mackerel. And while those fish can be found all around the world, a lot of them really love swimming in the Pacific Ocean near Peru.

Okay then. Well, I guess it's time to say aqui.

That's kind of the idea, Guy Raz. So sardines eat plankton, which are these microscopic shrimp like creatures, and they also eat microalgae, which is a kind of sea vegetable. So I figured if our pod smells like these two things, better chance we'll be swallowed.

[Guy Raz]

Good thinking.

[Mindy Thomas]

Yeah. So you ready to dive this pod down into the ocean?

[Guy Raz]

Let's get.

[Mindy Thomas]

That's how you do it. Kairaz. Kairazi. Alright, little buddy.

I think so. Where are we?

[Mindy Thomas]

Oh, I'd estimate at this point probably 20,000 leagues under the sea. Huh, we're deep enough now. I'm hoping we can find some schools of fish down here.

[Guy Raz]

I hope they're good students.

[Mindy Thomas]

Is that a joke, Guy Raz?

[Guy Raz]

Yeah, get it. Schools of fish. Studying hard.

[Mindy Thomas]

Yep, I got it. Anywho, Guy Raz, what we're looking for down here is a sardine. So if you see one swimming around. Oh wait, check it out. Two o'clock.

[Guy Raz]

Oh, there. Yes, I see them. Mindy, I believe we are approaching a school of sardines. And I'm hoping that right about now one of these fishies smells lunch.

[Mindy Thomas]

Or rather my professor proprietary parfum de plankton algae spray.

Hey, by the way, why do you have this giant countdown clock ticking the seconds away?

[Mindy Thomas]

Oh, that's to remind us that we've got a limited amount of minutes before we gotta get back so Reggie can make his jousting class on time.

[Guy Raz]

Oh, right. Got it. It appears as if we're swimming right into this school of.

[Mindy Thomas]

Ah, Guy Raz, I think one of the sardines is starting to suck us in. Hold on tight. Might get a little bumpy.

[Reggie]

This is awesome sardines.

[Mindy Thomas]

Guy Raz. Guy Raz. Mindy, I think we made it.

[Guy Raz]

Where are we?

[Mindy Thomas]

Well, if my calculations are correct, we're somewhere inside this sardine's stomach. And look what's Floating all around us.

[Guy Raz]

Whoa. Is that what I think it is?

[Mindy Thomas]

Well, if what you're thinking is fish food, then that's exactly what you're looking at.

[Guy Raz]

Plankton and microalgae. The very foods that fish like sardines eat.

[Mindy Thomas]

And the kinds of foods that sardines convert into super healthy omega 3s.

[Guy Raz]

The same omega 3s that may be connected to why those kids in China who ate fish at least once a week seem to do better on tests at school.

[Mindy Thomas]

Yeah, those are the ones.

But now, of course, we need to get this sardine to a fish oil factory to find out exactly how the omega 3 fish oil is squeezed out of them.

Well, Guy Raz, I think our plans are about to get real. Because if that sounds the sound I think it is, then we're about to get fished by a big old fishing boat.

Uh, yeah, I think you're right. And according to my guidebook here, this little sardine we're inside is about to have the oil squeezed out of it. So get ready for pressing.

This is the craziest adventure we've ever been on.

And look, now the oil seems to be separating from the water.

Oh, yeah, that's supposed to happen. It's because the oil is heavier than the water.

Okay, I think we're on the final stages now. I think we're about to.

Here it comes. The final step to take this liquid fish oil to tiny little capsules. What was that? Do you think it happened?

Yeah, I think we're inside a capsule. I think we've been turned into a fish oil tablet.

Yeah, I wonder if we're gonna be sold at a store.

You think? Hang on, let me peek through the window.

Well, it looks like we're just surrounded by a bunch of caramel colored fish oil tablets.
