That's it. Now back to the show.
Dennis
Mindy. Hello.
Guy Raz
Mindy.
Dennis
Oh, that's so good. Now try adding a top hat, huh?
Mindy Thomas
Great idea, Dennis.
Dennis
I know.
Guy Raz
What in the.
Mindy Thomas
Oh, hey, Guy Razzie.
Dennis
What's up, buddy?
Guy Raz
Nothing much, Mindy. I just wanted to show you my new electric toothbrush.
Dennis
Oh, wow.
Guy Raz
But then I heard all the commotion coming from the other side of the door. What's so funny?
Dennis
Oh, nothing, Mindy. What do you mean, nothing? You don't think these photos are funny anymore?
Mindy Thomas
Dennis, Shh.
Guy Raz
Oh, what are you talking about?
Thomas Fingerling
Nothing.
Mindy Thomas
Don't worry about it. Everything's fine.
Guy Raz
What are you doing at that computer, Mindy?
Dennis
Nothing.
Mindy Thomas
It's fine.
Guy Raz
Mindy.
Dennis
Let me be careful, Guy Raz. You'll ruin our precious artwork.
Guy Raz
Artwork? What in the.
Mindy Thomas
Fine. You got me.
Guy Raz
Mindy, what is all of this?
Mindy Thomas
It's you, Guy Raz.
Dennis
Can't you tell? It's art, Guy Raz. Art.
Guy Raz
I can see that. Here's an image of me as a firefighter. And I guess here's one of me as an astronaut.
Dennis
And look, here you are riding a giant taco.
Mindy Thomas
Oh, yeah, that's a good one.
Dennis
Mindy.
Guy Raz
What's going on here.
Mindy Thomas
What's going on here? Is that Dennis? Dennis and I have been churning out digital Guy Raz art all morning long.
Guy Raz
Well, it's very impressive, Mindy, but you really should be asking permission from someone before making art with their face all over it.
Mindy Thomas
I did ask. Didn't you get my permission slip in a bottle?
Guy Raz
What? No.
Mindy Thomas
Huh. I wonder if Thomas Fingerling and Grandma GeForce got their permission slips.
Guy Raz
Wait a minute. You've been making Grandma GeForce and Thomas Fingerling art as well?
Mindy Thomas
Oh, yeah. Here, check it out. Dennis, bring up that one of Thomas Fingerling and Grandma G Force playing pickle.
Dennis
That one's my favorite.
Mindy Thomas
Whoa.
Guy Raz
Is that Grandma G Force and Thomas Fingerling playing pickleball on a giant pepperoni pizza?
Mindy Thomas
Sure is.
Dennis
I wanted it to be a sausage green pepper pizza, but the toppings threw off the color balance.
Guy Raz
And you made all of these this morning?
Dennis
Yeah.
Mindy Thomas
Pretty bonker balls, huh?
Guy Raz
It's incredible, Mindy. I didn't realize you and Dennis were such talented digital artists.
Mindy Thomas
Well, we had a little help.
Guy Raz
Oh, yeah? Help from who?
Mindy Thomas
Uh, from a little thing called AI.
Guy Raz
AI? You mean artificial intelligence.
Dennis
What? That's what AI stands for. Mindy, you told me it stood for apples included.
Mindy Thomas
What? No, I didn't.
Dennis
Then where did all these apples come from?
Guy Raz
So wait a minute, Mindy, you're telling me you made all of these images with an AI program on your computer?
Mindy Thomas
Yeah. Wanna try it out?
Guy Raz
Sure. What should I do, Mindy?
Mindy Thomas
Okay, so first you're just gonna wanna open up this prompt box here.
Guy Raz
Okay.
Mindy Thomas
And now just type in the first thing that pops into your head.
Guy Raz
Okay, let's see. Dennis, can I use you in the image?
Dennis
Yes, you may.
Guy Raz
All right, let's see here.
Mindy Thomas
Hooray.
Dennis
I'm involved.
Guy Raz
Okay, I'll type in Dennis in a pair of yellow overalls, riding a giant turtle through space.
Mindy Thomas
Ooh, nice prompt, Guy Raz.
Dennis
Yeah, it's so ridiculous. I wear yellow pants, not yellow overalls.
Mindy Thomas
Okay, and now hit enter.
Dennis
Okay.
Mindy Thomas
And now we wait. It's done.
Thomas Fingerling
Whoa.
Guy Raz
Look at that, Mindy. It's Dennis riding a turtle through outer.
Dennis
Space and wearing yellow overalls.
Guy Raz
Wow. This is pretty incredible.
Mindy Thomas
You're telling me.
Guy Raz
But, Mindy, isn't this basically like a more advanced version of Zoodle Image Search?
Mindy Thomas
Well, not quite, Guy Raz.
Guy Raz
How is it different?
Mindy Thomas
Oh, I'm so glad you asked. Um, story time. So when you go to Zoodle Image Search.
Thomas Fingerling
Hello and welcome to Zoodle Image Search.
Mindy Thomas
And give it a request. One photo of an ice cream, please.
Thomas Fingerling
Certainly. One moment.
Unknown
Please.
Thomas Fingerling
Searching. Searching.
Mindy Thomas
The search engine goes off and looks for that image on the Internet, bringing you back the results.
Thomas Fingerling
Searching. I have found 1.2 trillion results.
Mindy Thomas
But with these AI generators, it works a little bit differently. Instead of going out and looking for images on the Internet, it creates a brand new image, something that's almost certainly never been seen before. One picture of an ice cream, please.
Thomas Fingerling
Certainly. Setting up easel. Applying paint. Complete. One painting of ice cream.
Mindy Thomas
I love it.
Thomas Fingerling
Yay.
Mindy Thomas
And that's basically how it works. Wow.
Guy Raz
Well, hang on a minute, Mindy. I understand how these AIs are different from a basic Internet search, but I still don't get how it works.
Mindy Thomas
What do you mean?
Guy Raz
Well, if you were an artist in the real world, you might go to school to learn how to draw and sketch and paint.
Dennis
Uh huh.
Guy Raz
So how do these AIs learn how to make these images? How do they know what an ice cream looks like and how to draw it?
Mindy Thomas
Oh, looks like we're heading back to story time.
Dennis
Two stories in one day. We're so lucky.
Mindy Thomas
So just like how human artists might go to school or university to train to become an artist, these AIs also have to train at the University of the World Wide Web.
Dennis
There's a University of the World Wide Web?
Guy Raz
Of course there's not a University of the World Wide Web, Dennis Mindy is just using it as a storytelling device.
Dennis
Ah, right. I knew that.
Mindy Thomas
Anywho, the AI shows up for its first year at the University of the World Wide Web.
Thomas Fingerling
Wow. Uwww. I finally made it. I'm gonna be the best AI Art generator.
Mindy Thomas
So in order to become a fully fledged AI art generator, this AI has to first take some intro classes.
Guy Raz
Intro classes?
Dennis
Yeah.
Mindy Thomas
Class number one is Object recognition.
Guy Raz
Object recognition?
Mindy Thomas
Yeah. Which is exactly what it sounds like. It's teaching the AI to recognize objects.
Dennis
Pay attention, class. This is a picture of a ball.
Unknown
This is a picture of a person throwing a ball.
Thomas Fingerling
Person ball throwing. Got it.
Mindy Thomas
Now imagine doing this for trillions of images or pictures across the Internet.
Unknown
Now this is a person juggling the ball.
Dennis
This is a person kicking. The ball sticks on a person fast.
Mindy Thomas
And once it's had a look at all of these trillions of images, it needs to learn how to sort them. Which brings us to our second class.
Unknown
Welcome to sorting 101.
Thomas Fingerling
Yay.
Mindy Thomas
Now the AI has to look through all the images it's learned about and sort them into hundreds of different groupings.
Guy Raz
Huh? Like what?
Mindy Thomas
Well, take a banana.
Thomas Fingerling
Okay. This is yellow. Therefore bananas go in the Yellow category.
Mindy Thomas
But it sorts these pictures into hundreds of different categories, like their shape, their size, their shininess, their brightness.
Thomas Fingerling
The banana also goes in the long category and also also goes in the medium sized category and the non shiny category and. And the fruit category.
Mindy Thomas
So at the end of this class, the AI knows both what these images are. That is a ball, but also the characteristics are things that make up that image.
Thomas Fingerling
The ball is white, it has stitches, it is round. It is used in the game of baseball.
Dennis
Wonderful. You're now ready for semester two creation.
Thomas Fingerling
Yay. I finally get to make my own art.
Mindy Thomas
So now, when you type a prompt into the machine, one picture of an ice cream, please.
Thomas Fingerling
Hmm. Okay. Ice cream. Round, colorful, moist, shiny.
Mindy Thomas
It then arranges a bunch of pixels into a shape that has those characteristics like shape quality and shininess.
Guy Raz
And pixels are the tiny dots on a screen that make up an image.
Mindy Thomas
Exactly. Hundreds of thousands of these little colored dots that all come together to make a picture.
Guy Raz
And the AI shuffles these around based on what it knows about the object you asked it to generate for you.
Mindy Thomas
Exact oritos.
Thomas Fingerling
Duh. What do you think, Mrs. Teacher, Ma'? Am?
Unknown
It's horrible.
Thomas Fingerling
Oh no.
Mindy Thomas
The first attempts are never good, but then the AI goes away and improves it, moving the pixels around just a little bit. And it does this over and over and over again, thousands of times a second.
Thomas Fingerling
How's this?
Dennis
No.
Thomas Fingerling
This?
Dennis
No.
Thomas Fingerling
This?
Dennis
No.
Mindy Thomas
This happens over and over and over again, improving little by little, until this.
Dennis
Oh.
Unknown
Now that's what I call an A. Ice cream.
Thomas Fingerling
Excellent. Here you are, ma'. Am. One picture of ice cream.
Mindy Thomas
I love it. And that guy Raz, is how you train an AI generator to become an artist.
Dennis
Ah. Wow.
Guy Raz
That was quite a lot to take in, Mindy. So let me get this straight. This AI program is taught what images look like, and then it's taught the characteristics of those images, like its size and color and shape.
Dennis
Uh huh.
Guy Raz
And then it puts a bunch of pixels together that have those characteristics.
Mindy Thomas
You know it.
Guy Raz
And then the AI keeps rearranging those pixels over and over again, making slightly better images every time until it has a brand new picture of whatever you asked for.
Mindy Thomas
Yep, that's it in a nutshell.
Guy Raz
Wow. That's kind of incredible.
Dennis
Yeah, almost as incredible as Reggie riding a skateboard over the Grand Canyon. Check it out.
Guy Raz
Wow.
Dennis
Okay, what should I put in next?
Guy Raz
How about.
Dennis
I've got it. How about three best Friends?
Mindy Thomas
Uh, sure.
Dennis
Yay. Three best friends. Three best friends.
Guy Raz
But Kendi, aren't you worried about these machines? Replacing artists in the real world. I mean, it might take a real human artist months or even years to create a piece of art like this, but these machines can do it in the blink of an eye.
Mindy Thomas
Well, that's a good point, Guy Raz. And some people are worried about these machines. I mean, on one hand, you can see them as just another tool for artists to express themselves.
Guy Raz
Right?
Mindy Thomas
Because these machines aren't creative. To them, these images are just a bunch of pixels and numbers. It's us humans who input the prompts to make them generate art.
Guy Raz
Huh.
Mindy Thomas
But on the other hand, some people are worried about these AI generators copying real life artists and not giving them credit for their work.
Guy Raz
What do you mean?
Mindy Thomas
Well, remember how that AI generator had to go to art school to learn how to generate?
Guy Raz
Yeah, the University of the World Wide West, Right?
Mindy Thomas
Well, when it's learning how to recognize and sort objects, it's doing that based on millions and millions of images from the web.
Guy Raz
Uh huh.
Mindy Thomas
And a lot of those images are created by artists who never gave their permission for their art to be used to teach robots.
Guy Raz
Right. And I'm guessing that when these AI art generators are asked to produce a work of art, it can sometimes end up looking very similar to those artists it was trained on.
Mindy Thomas
Exact oritos.
Guy Raz
So is this a good thing or a bad thing?
Mindy Thomas
Well, it's a new thing, Guy Raz. It's up to us humans to make that choice of how we use it.
Dennis
It's done. It's done. The three best friends look all right. Oh look, there's Mindy. And that's Guy with his glasses. But wait a minute, Mindy. I think this machine is broken.
Grandma GeForce
Oh boy.
Dennis
This one in the middle doesn't look anything like me. It's got a tail and feathers. And a beak. Reggie.

Episode: WeWow Summer Week - Day 3: Mural, Mural on the Wall
Release Date: July 9, 2025
Hosts: Mindy Thomas and Guy Raz
The episode kicks off with Dennis and Reggie celebrating the joys of summer in their signature playful banter. Dennis exclaims, "[...] it's summertime. No homework, no school. Yeah, it's the hottest season" (03:14), setting a vibrant tone for the day’s adventures.
Dennis and Reggie embark on a neighborhood adventure to gather inspiration for their summer fun. Their first encounter is with Grandma GeForce, who is diligently working on a unique mural.
Despite initial resistance to Dennis’s playful requests to add personal touches to the mural, Grandma GeForce assigns him the task of washing her brushes. This interaction leads to an accidental yet colorful transformation of Dennis’s outfit into a tie-dye masterpiece.
The hosts encourage listeners to share their own summer memories, inviting them to call in with their "summertime wows" for a chance to be featured on the show.
As Dennis and Grandma GeForce continue their artistic endeavors, the conversation seamlessly transitions to the world of artificial intelligence and its role in art creation.
Mindy delves into a detailed, story-driven explanation of how AI art generators function, differentiating them from traditional image search engines. She illustrates the process with engaging storytelling, featuring characters like Thomas Fingerling.
The hosts break down the stages of AI training:
Object Recognition: Teaching the AI to identify and understand various objects from trillions of images.
Sorting and Classification: Organizing images into numerous categories based on attributes like color, shape, and size.
Pixel Arrangement: The AI compiles and rearranges pixels to create cohesive and aesthetically pleasing images based on the learned characteristics.
Guy Raz participates by using the AI tool to generate images, prompting a fun and interactive demonstration of the technology in action.
The resulting images are humorously imperfect, leading to discussions about the current limitations and potential of AI-generated art.
The conversation deepens as the hosts explore the ethical considerations surrounding AI art generators, particularly focusing on the use of existing artists' works without permission.
They debate the dual nature of AI as both a tool for creativity and a potential threat to traditional artistry, emphasizing the importance of human choice in leveraging these technologies.
The episode wraps up with a light-hearted note as Dennis humorously showcases a flawed AI-generated image, reinforcing the idea that while AI has impressive capabilities, the human touch remains irreplaceable.
The hosts provide a brief overview of the episode's production team and offer listeners avenues to engage further with the show through surveys, social media, and merchandise.
