Atsuko Okatska
I worked with a wrestler, like a big beefy WWF guy and he had a tattoo on the back of his butt that said entrance only. Yeah, talk about homophobe.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Atsuko Okatska
No one said anything other. He was very defensive about it being or exit only.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
I was really enjoying you getting exit only. I was like, exit only.
Matt Walsh
That's progress, sweetie.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Hello and welcome to Wrong Turns. This is a podcast where shame truly does love company. Misery loves company. It's where dignity goes to die. I bring on my favorite funny people to tell me their most miserable stories where we don't try to find a silver lining. Joining me today we have an actress, writer and comedian whose new special Father is streaming on Hulu and Disney plus. You can see her on her tour all around the country. It's Artsuko Okatska. Hello.
Matt Walsh
Yes, hello.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Thank you.
Matt Walsh
Hello, hello, hello.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
And we are also thrilled to have a comedian, Emmy nominated actor and legendary improviser who is one of the co founders of the Upright Citizens Brigade, one of my favorite places in la. With credits including the Hangover, Veep and the Daily Show. He co hosts the podcast Second in Command and his new All Things Comedy podcast because you watched is out now. It's Matt Walsh. Hello.
Atsuko Okatska
Thank you God.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
That is the longest credits I have read so far on the podcast.
Atsuko Okatska
I'm sorry, you can eliminate any of that.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Not at all. I'm just saying you are a busy man.
Matt Walsh
The accomplishments.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
The accomplishments in this economy.
Atsuko Okatska
That doesn't mean I'm doing a podcast. Doesn't mean you're making money.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
But that's why he's dressed like that. All billionaires dress like that so that people don't. People don't notice. You go to Malibu where all the money in California is. Everyone looks like they're just very, very cash.
Matt Walsh
Look at me sandwiched between two billionaires. I have no idea.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Anyone who isn't watching the Flex Soft Flex Jamila. Yeah.
Matt Walsh
By the way, this is how billionaires dress. Excuse me. Excuse me. And what are you?
Host (Jameela Jamil)
I'm not even wearing a bra or a top underneath this very dirty old.
Matt Walsh
You sound even more rich. I don't need a bra.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
To female and male dominated spaces. How are you both?
Atsuko Okatska
Excellent.
Matt Walsh
Good.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah. When it comes to disaster, is it something you feel you handle well?
Atsuko Okatska
I think I am good. In an emergency slash disaster, is it.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Something you encounter frequently in your life.
Atsuko Okatska
Like with kids, if there's a cut or a hospital run or, you know, things like that? I think I'm pretty level headed. I worked at a hospital for three years, so I have a certain sense of emergency.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
What were you doing at the hospital?
Atsuko Okatska
I worked on a psych ward. I was like a. Wow. Mental health worker. And the nursing staff. Slash camp counselor.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
What about you?
Matt Walsh
That's great. Training for comedy.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah, you think?
Matt Walsh
Yeah. My mom has schizophrenia. Pretty much same experience as you.
Atsuko Okatska
I did see a lot of that.
Matt Walsh
Yeah.
Atsuko Okatska
But I don't know that it makes me better at comedy. People always say that, though. But maybe it's true. I don't know.
Matt Walsh
Being able to, you know, deal with chaos. You know, I did a standup set once during a 7.1 magnitude earthquake. I went onto stage as the earthquake was hitting.
Atsuko Okatska
Oh, my gosh.
Matt Walsh
And I was able to think very quick on my feet because I was like, look, my mom has schizophrenia. I was undocumented for seven years. Lived in a garage. Okay. I said, baby, this is nothing, sweetie. Mother Nature, you know what I mean? I was like, right, we're quick on our feet. Like improv skills, having to keep things calm.
Atsuko Okatska
Well, I think you're talking about experiencing or witnessing trauma is really what's made you quick on your feet. Not me. Not being in a psych ward isn't what helped me. It's like witnessing those traumas.
Matt Walsh
Witnessing. Witnessing, yes. Yeah. Same. Yeah.
Atsuko Okatska
And then you realize this is an emergency. This is not an emergency.
Matt Walsh
Right. Right where I was. Like an earthquake. Okay. What is this every day on earth somewhere, you know.
Atsuko Okatska
True, true.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Very, very casual.
Matt Walsh
Thank you.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Are you someone who feels as though you are drawn to disaster? Is disaster drawn to you?
Matt Walsh
Oh, I think it goes both ways. Right. You're doing the chicken or egg thing, kind of which one comes first? Right. I mean, disaster avoids some people because they're more organized and right on time, things like that. I'm not like that. So I think, of course the earthquake was gonna hit when I hit the stage.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah. You know, 100%.
Matt Walsh
Everything's kind of. Of course with me. Yeah. Right. I don't know about, you know, my father here. I don't know why I keep looking at you to be like, right, let's.
Atsuko Okatska
Go get ice cream after this.
Matt Walsh
Thank you. It's been a minute.
Atsuko Okatska
We rode our bikes together.
Matt Walsh
That's where he met Mother was the psych ward.
Atsuko Okatska
Yes, I did.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
She's a beautiful woman.
Atsuko Okatska
It was unprofessional of me to date her, but yes, the love endured.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Do you have any examples of any kind of micro humiliations that you could share with us?
Atsuko Okatska
So I had a micro when I was in Chicago as an actor, not making any money, I took any job I could get because I wasn't really making money as comedy yet. And a friend of mine, Laura, said, oh, you can hand out candies and elf on Michigan Avenue. So it was winter time, so I'm like, all right, I guess I'll do it. I didn't ask any more questions. So I just showed up and they had me put on tight, so I didn't have leggings on. So Chicago's very cold rubber boots. I didn't have socks on, so I had like thin rubber elf shoes, leggings or nylons essentially that were green. And then I had boxer shorts, so you could see through the nylons and you could see my boxer shorts that were sort of scrunched up cuz the nylons were tight. And then I had like a. Do you call it a Cossack or a tunic? It's like an elf skirt.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah.
Atsuko Okatska
That hangs just below your business. Right. So I was handing out candy on Michigan Avenue, freezing to death, and I'm.
Matt Walsh
Like, this is attempted murder.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah, it is.
Matt Walsh
They were trying stupid kill you.
Atsuko Okatska
And then when we later went to a indoor place, we were doing a photo op to read storybooks to children to endorse this candy we were handing out. And when I sat down to read, my Cossack or tunic pulled up and you could see my underwear. But also one of my testicles was hanging out of my underwear.
Matt Walsh
Wow.
Atsuko Okatska
And so I'm reading a story, Indian style to a. Or cross legged, rather, to a kid.
Matt Walsh
We have to.
Atsuko Okatska
Oh, my God, wrong turn. Don't say that.
Matt Walsh
We're gonna have to. We're gonna have to start that. Nah, actually, we have to. Right? We have.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
I love it. Keep going. See what I mean? Yeah.
Atsuko Okatska
I create chaos. And I kept reading and my friend's like, you need to. Hey. And I looked down and then I had to turn around and sort of adjust myself.
Matt Walsh
You were reading to children?
Atsuko Okatska
Yes.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Bollocks out. See, Just one ball to the wall.
Atsuko Okatska
Yeah.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Had no one else noticed? Was no one giggling?
Atsuko Okatska
No. My friend, who was also an elf, noticed it, but nobody, nobody else but they were taking pictures.
Matt Walsh
So I hope we need the people.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Who were there that day to resurface those photographs fucking immediately.
Matt Walsh
I don't know how to tell you, but they noticed. Okay.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah.
Atsuko Okatska
No one said anything until.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
My friend, what's an example of a micro humiliation that you may have encountered?
Matt Walsh
This is more recent. Just because it happened like two days ago, I was at Disneyland and I'm on the new Tiana's Bayou log ride. It used to be Splash Mountain.
Atsuko Okatska
Okay.
Matt Walsh
They had to change it because, you know, people like Matt were saying Indian style. Still.
Atsuko Okatska
So on that ride, weirdly, you just said it too. I'll put it in quotes.
Matt Walsh
It's in quotes. And so they were like, we gotta change for the time. So it's now Tiana's Bayou.
Atsuko Okatska
This was Song of the South, I think was the theme. Brer Rabbit and all that.
Matt Walsh
Right, right. Yeah.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Was there something problematic about the name Splash Mountain? I always just thought it was a bit too dizzy.
Matt Walsh
It was the fairy tale, I think, the movie that it belonged to.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Right.
Matt Walsh
I actually didn't. Never seen the movie.
Atsuko Okatska
Yeah. Zippity doo dah. Zippity A came from that. Yes. But it was sort of a stereotypical happy, almost slave lifestyle. They were sort of saying, like, everything's great in the south, sort of. And it wasn't.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Okay.
Matt Walsh
Yeah.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
So you were on your.
Matt Walsh
You were on your ride, Tiana's Bayou. I was like, yes, I'm going to support. Yes. Come on, Wet ride. So we're. We finished, pretty much. We did the big drop in the air. Ah, we're screaming. Ooh. Me and my friends, five gay boys. We're in the log. We got wet. We're about to make it to the end and then we stop. Right. We. It's. The ride has malfunctioned. The Speaker. You know, as a bunch of logs are. We're at the beginning, so they're hitting up against us. And so we're, you know, we're all stuck, right? And we're outside now. We're, you know, above us, there's like the line of people waiting to get on the ride. And then behind me, behind us, we're. The first log is a bunch of logs with a bunch of people, right? And so we're stuck. I was like, oh, that's okay, you know, but kind of scary. And. And then above, I just hear people going, that's her, that's her. It's Atsuko. I look up and they're filming me. They're taking pictures. And now it's like, oh, oh, oh my goodness. Oh, now it's a meet and greet, you know. Hey, woo, it's me. Oh, so relatable, you know. Oh yeah, all wet. All wet. You know, me, Me and my friends. Real wet. Behind me, I'm looking to see if we're getting saved. You know, there's a bunch of people in logs too, and they're going, atsuko, hello. Hey, it's you. Hey, girl. I'm like, that's me, your girl. Wet as a napkin. Wet napkin.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Known for being wet napkins.
Matt Walsh
Wet napkins. You know, this isn't my first language.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
No, wet as a napkin is entering my vernacular. The rest of my life. I got the image and sitting Indian style.
Matt Walsh
You know, where I come from?
Atsuko Okatska
From you can say that.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
I can.
Matt Walsh
Did they mean like South Asian Indians or did they mean, I don't know, Native American?
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yoga is. Yeah. He doesn't investigate his salaries.
Matt Walsh
No, he's out there. Exit, entrance, exit.
Atsuko Okatska
Miller gave me a list of words to say and I just said them.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
One of the browns.
Matt Walsh
Right, right, right, right. Today someone will go down. But yes, so that. That happened. But I kind of liked. I, I was embarrassed, but I, you know, I kind of liked it. I was like, ooh, what is this feeling? I kind of liked it.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
That weirdly reminds me of a time I went to Disneyland. I was 15. I wouldn't necessarily say this is my wrong turn, but I was being bullied really badly at school. And our jazz choir had been invited to sing at Disneyland Paris. And because we did that, we got the day free to get, like all the passes. I mean, you get through all the rides really quickly. And we went on Space Mountain. Do you have that one in America?
Matt Walsh
Yes.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah, so we went on Space Mountain. It's the one that's got like the corkscrew that goes down, right? It's a terrifying ride. And we all went on it. No one wanted to sit next to me, so I sat on my own at the very back next to this other girl who no one wanted to sit next to. And we are on the spiral that goes downwards, right? It kind of goes in a loop de loo, upside down. And the ride suddenly stops dead in the middle of the corkscrew. So we're all facing straight down. So pretty much upside down, hanging on. And it's just come to a drastic stop. And everyone starts screaming and getting really scared because this is terrifying. And you feel like you're going to fall out of the damn thing. And then the girl next to me has eaten way too much lunch to be on this ride. And the stress and the burgers of it all mean she starts vomiting down the entire line of other girls. So they're already afraid, but now they're screaming even more because they're being vomited on and there's nothing they can do to protect themselves. They don't know where it's coming from. I'm sat next to her. I am fucking cackling because I was like, oh, the justice, the justice of these bitches who ruined my trip to Paris. Now everyone's upside down. I don't mind being upside down.
Matt Walsh
Yeah.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
And she's vomiting and vomiting. No one's ever vomited more in their life. And gravity means it's like shooting down at everyone, going in their long hair. Oh, my gosh. And it was. It was the greatest day I think of my life. And to this day, everything's been a disappointment because it hasn't been as good as that day.
Matt Walsh
Wow.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
But then my laughter meant I got bullied much harder all the way home.
Matt Walsh
You know what, though? Yeah? You don't have to shower.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah, yeah, exactly. I mean, I win. I win. Anyway, we're gonna go to a quick break.

And we are back. Thank you both for your micro humiliation stories. I now feel like I have a sense of you a little bit of a better sense. I now want to know what your general already really. You gave a lot away, Matt.
Atsuko Okatska
Oh, you're good. I gotta be more guarded.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah, exactly.
Atsuko Okatska
You're gonna understand.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Let's go. What is your wrong turn?
Matt Walsh
Oh, gosh. Well, so I went to go see my dad in Bali when I was 18, and we hadn't seen each other in seven years. So I was very like, oh, my gosh, this is a man I don't know that well.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
And are you excited or are you pissed?
Matt Walsh
Oh, I'm excited. Oh, by the way, so we were separated because of family drama and immigration issues. So it wasn't like he bounced or anything, you know, but, you know, seven years is a long time. You know, 11 to 18, that's like a lot that. A lot of my childhood. Yeah. Yeah. And so I show up to Bali. I'm thinking, oh, we're gonna sit on the beach, sip on coconut water. We're gonna catch up on years, you know, just looking out on the ocean. He had booked us water park tickets, like, you know, and I can't swim. But he doesn't know that because, you know, we hadn't seen each other. Right. And so. But. And he was so excited about it. He's like, we're gonna, you know, make up for lost time, do things dads and daughters do.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
It's also such a funny. Like, girls are imagining, like, bonding and sitting quietly in front of something scenic. And the man is like, let's go do action. Where we don't look at each. We look forward to do a thing activities.
Matt Walsh
Yes.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Very classic, right?
Matt Walsh
Yeah. Like, we're a military family or something. Right. It's about keeping busy together.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah.
Matt Walsh
Yeah. And so, you know, he was so stoked So I was like, yes, water park. Yes.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
You don't tell him you can't swim.
Matt Walsh
Oh, no, no. Because I'm just like, we'll figure it out. It's a water park. It's not like I'm gonna be racing someone swimming. Right.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Okay.
Matt Walsh
So he drives me, we show up, and. And it's Indonesia. So I don't know. The water park is just the ocean we park. I said, this is the beach. My dad goes, yes, water park. What happened was, like, uncles and aunties, like, locals brought floaties and boats and set up, like, a ticketing booth and just called it a water park. And I appreciate that hustle. Yeah, I appreciate that hustle. I was like, you get your money, girl. But now. But this is now the, you know, environment that I'm going to be getting on rides, right? Very diy.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
We're using the word rides very loosely here.
Matt Walsh
Oh, yes. It's very, like, makeshift, you know. One of the rides was called the flying Fishboat, where it's like a floating device that sits on the ocean. It's connected to a boat. You lay down in the. Yes. And it pulls you. There's like two little tiny strings you hang on to. Right. And. And they pull you so fast that you become vertical to the ocean. That's why it's called the flying fish. But you're flying, and wind's hitting you real fast. I'm holding on to the tiny little strings. Oh, no life vest or anything.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
What? By the way, and at this point, you still haven't told your dad that you don't know how to swim?
Matt Walsh
No, I. I mean, by the end.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
I told you, I'd rather kill yourself than the vibe.
Matt Walsh
Well, I was like, oh. I mean, there's so many people around. There's the boat person, you know, the person who put me on there. Surely it's, you know, and I can kind of paddle around, you know? Yeah. And so I'm vertical. I'm screaming. Oh. You know, it's how I found out I was in alto. Oh, I can't hit the high notes. So that was really scary. That was the first thing my dad is not getting on the rides with me because he's like, I only got you tickets to go on the rides. I'm just gonna watch from the side, you know, take pictures. Cause he goes, that's what fathers do. Which. I'm so sorry. Are we doing things that fathers do? Do we start that now? Yeah, we don't do what fathers do. We are not a normal family. Right. We don't need to start it. Why don't come with me?
Host (Jameela Jamil)
It's also my favorite. Like, now further step removed from not even doing an activity together. Him watch from a hundred feet away.
Atsuko Okatska
Yeah.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
This is perfect.
Matt Walsh
Oh, this is great. Yeah. While I'm, like, near drowning.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah.
Matt Walsh
And then there's one more ride. It was the paragliding. I'd never done that before. I didn't even.
Atsuko Okatska
So did you go right to flying fish? Like, there was no, like, smaller ride or baby steps. Your first ride was a crazy boat, hauling ass around the ocean, and you're holding up for dear life.
Matt Walsh
Yeah.
Atsuko Okatska
I'm screaming, that's number one.
Matt Walsh
Drunk Jesus. That's number one. I was like, oh, my God, I'm so good. My hands, you know, I'm bare. I'm white knuckling it. Right. And then the next one is paragliding, which is the ultimate. What is that? Just. Can we start small? But this is like a loose tarp. And then a little like. What is that?
Atsuko Okatska
It's not even a parachute. It's a mom and pop loose tarp.
Matt Walsh
I'm like, I appreciate the DIY spirit, honey, but you know what? Yeah. It's not like we also, it's Indonesia. We're not signing paperwork like you would or something, you know, in America or Canada or something. Right. Going, oh, if I die. No, it's like an unspoken agreement that you.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah, we have, like, horse riding, but they don't give you a saddle. You're just going bare back on a horse. There's not consented to this. Like. No. This is. It's insane.
Matt Walsh
Yeah.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah, I get it.
Matt Walsh
It's just like thrill seeking.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah. You know? Yeah, Just the it bucket.
Matt Walsh
Yes.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah.
Matt Walsh
Yes. So that's the paragliding. It was a loose tarp. There's like a area where you sit. What is that the. Anyway. Harness. Right, Right. And then again, attached to a boat. I said, at a certain point, can I just be in a boat? I just want to be in a boat with my dad. Have a champagne. You know what I mean? Always getting tugged by a boat. So you're running with the boat as it goes, and then you catch air. Right.
Atsuko Okatska
But you're running on the shore.
Matt Walsh
Right. To get momentum and then you catch flight. That's how that works.
Atsuko Okatska
Yes. Yeah. Like a kite. You're a human kite. Yeah.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
This was the inspiration for fyre fest.
Matt Walsh
Yeah. So I'm in the air, but they tell me, you know, also, there's like two strings on this ride, too, where you're supposed to, when you're trying to come down, start methodically, like pulling at them to glide down to safety.
Atsuko Okatska
So doing this lowers you closer to earth.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
You know, with office blinds, you have to just sort of do them both. Yeah.
Atsuko Okatska
I don't understand the aeronautics of this, but.
Matt Walsh
Okay, me too. Because. Well, it tightens some parts of the tarp on the right side or the left side, depending on the wind.
Atsuko Okatska
Okay.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
And the people at top is.
Matt Walsh
So that's what it felt like. I was like, this is just a picnic sheet, right?
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah.
Matt Walsh
And they're like, no, no paraglide. Go. And. But the people were telling me, like, okay, so on the way down, like.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
I'm going to impress my dad. Is that what's driving you?
Matt Walsh
I'm very much a people pleaser.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Right, right.
Matt Walsh
And so, you know, I assume things. I always think people are sadder than they actually are. So I think my dad needs this. You know, and he's thinking probably she needs this. You know, we're both going, we, you know, they need this.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Matt Walsh
None of us needs this.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
No, but.
Matt Walsh
So I'm already in the air. But before the people on the ground go like, okay, so we're going to be. Listen close because from the ground, we're going to be telling you which string to be pulling on. Okay, so. All right. So you can glide down safely. And sound. I said, okay. And so you are an expert at some things. Because at this point, I'm like, so you do know some things. They're like, yes. So listen out for that. I'm in the air, right? There's a. Oh, I cannot hear them. I'm too high up. They're telling me which one to pull, but this is all I hear.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Jesus Christ.
Matt Walsh
I was what? Also, I don't understand the language. So it doesn't matter what they say. I'm like, what? They're like, left, right? I have no idea. So I start pulling at him really fast. And then so I come crashing down into rocks. And so I'm all my knees are bloodied up. My father's running to me. My baby. I was like, get this man away from me.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
I don't know him.
Matt Walsh
I said, who is this, sir? Father Steve? I don't know who. What do I call you? Because I was like, man, we really don't know each other. And then so, yeah, he gets me medical attention. And then we end up do. Having drinks that night.
Atsuko Okatska
And did your people pleaser try to convince your dad that you were okay even though you were all Bloody, like, were you like, no, I'm fine.
Matt Walsh
Yeah, yeah. It's true. But it's hard to, you know, be fine when visibly you're not. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And so I think he. He also. It hit him and hit me, you know, that like, we should just be communicating, you know. Yeah. About what we really wanted out of this trip. Oh.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
A nice little deep philosophical yes. Yeah.
Matt Walsh
Came out of this in like, what was a wrong turn, which is all kind. You know, I was spinning in circles, really, in that paraglide.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
One of the scariest, most dramatic wrong turns I think we've had on this show so far.
Matt Walsh
You know, child endangerment is some people's love language, you know, and so I think that's. That's Yoshiaki. Yeah, that's my dad.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Oh, man. Did that make a dent on you about the negative impacts of people pleasing? Oh, not really. No. No.
Matt Walsh
Yeah. That's what's messed up, right? I don't. I feel like we're always learning the same lesson over and over.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
So we keep coming back to this earth until we fucking get it right. It's our own personal grandparents.
Matt Walsh
Therapists make that money. That's why that's a. That's. It's a whole career. Right.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
So you're still a people pleaser to this day.
Matt Walsh
Oh, yes. Yeah, yeah.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Great. Great. You say that like. Yes, my identity.
Matt Walsh
What else do I have? Yeah, I don't hike, you know, I don't have hobbies.
Atsuko Okatska
I feel like fashion is kind of a hobby for you. You have taste.
Matt Walsh
Oh, thank you. But it's not like, you know, I. I like, you know, memorize designers and collect or anything. You know, I just kind of.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah, there's people place.
Matt Walsh
Right? Right. Yeah.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Well, the world is lucky to have you.
Matt Walsh
Oh, thank you so much.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah, thank you for that absolutely terrifying scene from a movie. Wrong turn. We'll be right back after the break.

Host (Jameela Jamil)
So, Matt, will you please tell us your wrong turn?
Atsuko Okatska
I was a young man going to school in Europe, and I had a Eurail pass, and I wanted to, like, travel on my own, so I challenged myself to go to Amsterdam. I'm like, oh, maybe I'll get high, because I don't think I'd really smoked weed yet. So I'm like a junior in college. So I got on a trip.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Are you alone? Are you with friends?
Atsuko Okatska
I went solo. I went by myself. Yeah, because I wanted to challenge myself to go on my own because I always. I travel a lot in Europe, but I always went with a pack of Americans. And I'm like, no, I want to get out and see the country and meet the locals.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
You wanted to go to the red light district on your own, didn't you?
Atsuko Okatska
That wasn't the goal, but I'm sure I did at that trip. Yeah, but got on the train, met this kid from Austria who was also going up towards Amsterdam, and he. He was like a goth kid, and he seemed experienced with, like, getting weed. And we talked and he's like, well, I'm gonna get weed too. I'm like, well, maybe I'll go with you. So I'm like, okay. So then we get to the train station in Amsterdam, and right away there's a guy who looks like a doobie brother. He's got, like, long hair, kind of a hippie, and he's like, you want weed? You want weed? And he was a local Dutch guy. And like, well, yeah, we do. And he's like, well, I know the kid does, and I'll tag along. So we. He's like, I got weed. Come on, I'll get you weed. So we go to his house or apartment somewhere, and we got, you know, I got my backpack. We haven't done anything yet. And we get to his apartment. He's like, oh, yeah. And he was like, talking to us like a salesman. He's like, oh, I'll get you so much weed. I love where you from. Love America. I love Austria. It's so great. You guys are so great. Sit down. You want anything? No, no. I just wanted to get out of there, you know, because I didn't know him. And then he goes, I just got to take care of something real quick and I'll get you the weed. And then he, like, goes to a room and comes back and he shoots up heroin right in front of us.
Matt Walsh
Oh, my God.
Atsuko Okatska
So the thing he had to take care of first is he had to feed his addiction to heroin. So he's like, just go ahead. And he's right in front of us. And I'd never seen anyone shoot heroin then or since. I've never seen anyone shoot heroin. So I'm like, all right. And I turn, you know, turn away. And then I realized, like, there's a TV in the room, and on the TV is the Brady Bunch. So it was this surreal, like, MTV Europe was playing the Brady Bunch while.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
This, like the epitome of wholesomeness.
Matt Walsh
Oh, my God.
Atsuko Okatska
Shooting heroin. And then he's like, okay, I'll get you the weed. And he's like, sort of clumsy.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
He chooses to shoot heroin before the financial transaction. Yeah, what a choice.
Atsuko Okatska
I think the monkey got the better of him in that moment. I think he couldn't delay gratification with a habit like that.
Matt Walsh
I can relate.
Atsuko Okatska
I'm not on a. I like immediate gratification, too, but I've never had heroin as a thing.
Matt Walsh
Right. I'm very treat based. But it's a little different.
Atsuko Okatska
Yeah, it's a little different.
Matt Walsh
It's like you write like, if I.
Atsuko Okatska
Bring someone to the apartment, then I can do heroin. Heroin. Okay, I did it. Tick it off the box. So he.
Matt Walsh
Oh, my gosh.
Atsuko Okatska
He starts stumbling around to get his thing, and then he's like, oh, I need water. So he got. He went in the fridge and he. He's delaying this thing, and I feel very unsafe. And I don't really know this kid, but he's a nice kid. And he pours himself a big picture out of Pitch Rod. He starts drinking it and he's like, okay. So then. And he's negotiating with the kid to how much to pay for this little amount of buds. And then his girlfriend comes home. She's like, hi, honey. And she's speaking in Dutch. Oh, these are American and Austrian kid. So now I'm meeting his girlfriend, and she's like, okay. And then she goes in the fridge and she's like, taking this thing out, and she notices the pitcher's like, really low. And she's like, honey, did you. You didn't drink that, did you? He's like, yeah, I had some water. He's like, that's plant fertilizer. Oh, that's got, like, plant fertilizer in there. And he's like, well, why is it in the refrigerator in a pitcher for water? And she's like, I don't know, because I kept it there because I was going to feed the plants and I put the stuff in there. So he drank plant fertilizer mixed with water that was in a water pitcher. So now the guy who just got recently high is like, I'm going to freaking die. I'm going to die.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
He's like, now I've done something dangerous.
Atsuko Okatska
So now he's like, I'm going to die.
Coop Sleep Goods Advertiser
Why would you do that?
Atsuko Okatska
So I just.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Why would you risk my life and I work so hard to preserve it?
Atsuko Okatska
Yes. But he kind of was right. Like, you don't put.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
No, of course not.
Atsuko Okatska
Fertilizer in a pitcher that's in the refrigerator.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Like, that's a fair assumption, even for a junkie murder. Yeah, right.
Atsuko Okatska
So he was freaking out. I'm gonna die. And I just sort of snuck out and I said, I'll meet you later. I told that kid, like, well, I'll meet you. Because he had a tip on a hostel. So we were staying at a. A. A boat because it was cheap, right by the dock, you know, where the ferry would come. So this is like, hours later. So I did eventually get high with the kid, and I met him there. So I'm high, walking by myself to go home to the boat that I'm going to sleep on. And to get there, you could either go like a mile and a half around the train station, or you could cut. You could go through the train station, go down the one walkway, walk 30ft and hop the fence because the boat was right there. Yeah, it's like, fuck it. I'm going to do that because I got my backpack and everything. So I go to the train station. I'm a little high. Get to the walkway, Go down the walkway. I'm walking, like, 30ft on dirt parallel to a train track, and I'm getting ready to hop the fence. And a Dutch cop says something to me, like, a Dutch rail cop or what? Real cop? I'm like, what? He's like, verboten in Dutch. Like, English. Sorry, English. He's like, okay, you cannot go there. You must go around. He said, oh, I'm just right here. I'm Just. I'm staying in the boat. I'm just. Right. He's like, I don't care. You must go. And then he gets close to me. I'm like, please. I'm like, I have this thing. It's been a long day. I just want to go here. And then he's like, no, you do what I say. And he takes a stick, and he hits me and shoves me with it. He goes, you go back around.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Why? Why can't you just cross the bridge?
Atsuko Okatska
Because he's a mean cop.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
All right?
Matt Walsh
Okay.
Atsuko Okatska
So he did that to me. And because I was high a little bit, I was like, don't you freaking shove me. Which I never do. So I got angry, and because I felt disrespected, like, don't you shove me. And he's like, oh, you want to go? Like, what? He's like, you want to go? Then he starts to, like, put a stick down.
Matt Walsh
Oh, no.
Atsuko Okatska
And undo his belt.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
He's gonna. You.
Matt Walsh
Oh, he wants to settle it.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Wow.
Atsuko Okatska
He's gonna reverse the exit only theory.
Matt Walsh
Yes. Wow.
Atsuko Okatska
Scary. And I'm just high enough because I'm not beat.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
You old school.
Atsuko Okatska
But I was angry enough, and he was smaller than me. So I'm thinking, you know what? I don't care at this point because he's so rude to me that he shoved me. So stupid and altered state. So I'm like, what? Really? You want to do this? You want to do. And just at that moment where I'm considering, like, squaring off with a guy who would have killed me, there was, like, a Rastafarian guy cutting through the trainer, but doing it legally going into the train. So I don't know where he came from, honestly, but he just sort of shouted from yards and yards away. He's like, don't do it, man. He'll fucking kill you. And it sort of snapped me out of this delusion, like an angel. And I looked at the guy who said that, and I looked at the cop. I'm like, all right. And I kind of put my hands up and pick my backpack up, and I walked all the way around for, like, a mile and a half. But it was, like, series of bad choices that led to that.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Me. Do you think you just had kind of literal Dutch courage?
Atsuko Okatska
Yeah, it was weird. I'm not like, a tough guy. I mean, I. I've had a few scrapes.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
I like the idea that you coined that phrase because of that moment.
Matt Walsh
I don't know this phrase.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Dutch. Dutch courage. The Dutch Courage is something we normally say. I don't know if you have that.
Atsuko Okatska
We don't have that here.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Dutch courage in Britain is something that you say, I think when you. When you're drunk, for some reason. I don't know why it's called Dutch courage, but when you're drunk, it's kind of. No, no. Beer goggles is more. When you think someone's more attractive than they are because you're drunk. Maybe we could Google it. Could someone Google what the meaning of Dutch courage is? But normally it just means that you drink before you do something scary.
Atsuko Okatska
Okay.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Oh, and so you say, like, I need a bit of Dutch courage.
Atsuko Okatska
I 100 had Dutch courage. That is exactly it.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah.
Atsuko Okatska
It's.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
It's. It's misplaced confidence.
Matt Walsh
Because of, like.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah. Our producers just said it's misaltered confidence stemming from an altered state bravado. I genuinely think the Rastafarian witnessed that moment with you and then told everyone this is the time.
Atsuko Okatska
Oh, my God.
Coop Sleep Goods Advertiser
That's where it came from.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
That's where it came from.
Matt Walsh
Oh, my God.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
I'm sure that that night.
Atsuko Okatska
It's the first cited source of the word Dutch courage.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
You would have initial courage.
Atsuko Okatska
That would be amazing.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
With a dut cop.
Atsuko Okatska
It's possible.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
It's highly likely. Oh, man.
Atsuko Okatska
Isn't that crazy?
Host (Jameela Jamil)
He would have probably killed you. You're in the middle of nowhere.
Coop Sleep Goods Advertiser
He was looking.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Well, who does that out of you? Yeah. When he takes his belt off, like, what is he, like, an Indian dad? It's ridiculous. Like, that's how our parents do anything to that. Because we don't know anything about.
Matt Walsh
We support you.
Atsuko Okatska
Yeah.
Matt Walsh
And your culture.
Atsuko Okatska
I don't care how you sit.
Matt Walsh
And we are sorry you experienced that.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
We listen and we don't judge.
Matt Walsh
Yes.
Atsuko Okatska
Yes.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah, man, I can't believe it. We have. We have another South Asian in the room. Was like, did I lie? Nope.
Matt Walsh
Exactly.
Atsuko Okatska
The belt we got. I got a belt when I was a kid.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah.
Atsuko Okatska
I did get strapped.
Matt Walsh
Yeah.
Atsuko Okatska
Smacked with a belt.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
So had you ever been, like a bulshy person before that moment?
Atsuko Okatska
A what person?
Host (Jameela Jamil)
A bolshe. Oh, okay, fine.
Matt Walsh
Someone was like.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Sort out my lingo. Someone was like, have you ever been a. Have you ever bolshy? Like, balshy is kind of like. We also have Larry. That's probably not a word.
Matt Walsh
You have bravery.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Honestly, you'd think ballsy. No, balshy. It's a fuck. How would I say this?
Atsuko Okatska
I love the English. American.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
No. This is a nightmare translation. Would you say that you were an.
Atsuko Okatska
Use it in a sentence. A different sentence.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Would you have said that you were, like, a defiant and violent person?
Atsuko Okatska
I can be that person. Yes, very often, but I would never.
Matt Walsh
You said your dad. Dad would use the belt on you.
Atsuko Okatska
Yes.
Matt Walsh
Yeah. Usually people who had, like, kind of, like, physically abusive parents do. Don't do well with authority, so just hurt people.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Hurt people do.
Matt Walsh
Yeah, yeah.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
You know.
Matt Walsh
Yeah, it's true.
Atsuko Okatska
I broke the cycle. No, my dad was very loving, but he had seven kids, so I give him a break.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah, yeah.
Matt Walsh
Oh, sure.
Atsuko Okatska
It was sort of like farm justice. All right, you two, sit down.
Matt Walsh
Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh.
Atsuko Okatska
Who's next? My mom would say, he did this, he did that, he did that. There was four boys, then three girls.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Jessica, you can't be this shocked. Your dad tried to kill you first.
Coop Sleep Goods Advertiser
Time you saw him.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah, but he's like.
Matt Walsh
He's like, this is for. This is for bonding. It's different.
Atsuko Okatska
You're right. It's different. It's not the same as. Well, no, getting the belt is not.
Matt Walsh
Bonding well, because my. My husband used to get the belt, and he doesn't do it with authority either. Or, like, he doesn't like being told what to do. He can have moments of. It's like, why are you being aggressive? Yeah, Yeah.
Atsuko Okatska
I used to always say, don't tell me what to do. That was, like, something I would often say. Like, I would get angry about people telling me what to do. So that is related to many things. Yeah.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
That's an intense environment to try your luck with your violent streak with a police officer.
Atsuko Okatska
I don't have a violent streak.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
I'm joking.
Atsuko Okatska
Just love the idea. And I would never, ever.
Matt Walsh
I just love the idea that this.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Is turning into an intervention. Like, Matt, you have a problem. Well, it was poor judgment.
Atsuko Okatska
My judgment was altered, and I was in, like, a dark train yard in a foreign country. The trail of error started way earlier.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
I completely relate. I can completely understand how that happens. And also. So you feel like you're in a dream state the first time.
Atsuko Okatska
Yeah.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah. And also their shit is strong. It's not like what we have in England or America. Like, it is incredibly strong. There's all kinds of other stuff.
Atsuko Okatska
And I was a rookie.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
It's quite hallucinogenic, almost.
Atsuko Okatska
I was a rookie. I hadn't really had a lot of experience with it, so I'm sure it really affected me.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah, you just thought you were unbelievably strong and could fight or.
Atsuko Okatska
I Just wasn't thinking, like, I can. No.
Matt Walsh
But also he was almost home, you know, I was.
Atsuko Okatska
That's the other thing is, like, when you're this.
Matt Walsh
So close, it's like having a scoop.
Atsuko Okatska
Of ice cream right here and someone goes, no.
Matt Walsh
Yeah, right.
Atsuko Okatska
That's what it felt like.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
It's like, really just such a dick.
Atsuko Okatska
Exactly. Exactly.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah.
Matt Walsh
Just so easy to just go, oh, never.
Atsuko Okatska
Go ahead.
Matt Walsh
Yeah, yeah. It's.
Atsuko Okatska
He was out to mess with me and I recognized that I didn't like it. And of course it was a dumb.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
It's such a mad time of you to have gone there on your own.
Atsuko Okatska
I think that's what you should do when you're in another country. You should go on adventures by yourself so you don't cling to your friends and you get out and.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
And you make new friends. Did you make friends that lasted forever, that trip?
Atsuko Okatska
I met that Austrian kid and he was fun and we went around town and then. Yeah, it's always good to go off on your. Not just to go off the path.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah.
Atsuko Okatska
You don't have to go by yourself. But I challenged myself.
Matt Walsh
I got to know the Indian Ocean.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yes, you did.
Matt Walsh
Yes.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Thank you so much for both of your great stories. Before you go, I would like to just quickly share a story. It's another wrong turn. This one's from one of our listeners. This is from Catherine. She says my graduation, four months after my mum died was hard enough because she was my biggest supporter. Get to the stage, look into the crowd where my dad, brother and sister would be sitting, and lo and behold, my mum was there. My dad had made a cardboard cutout of my mum and thought it would be lovely to have her at my graduation. She obviously doesn't know this is happening. I can see the sentimentality now, but at the time I screamed, knees gave out and I had to be carried off the stair.
Matt Walsh
Oh, my God.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Because I was in an actual state. We laugh about it now. And my dad has the cutout in the corner of their bedroom. Oh, my God.
Atsuko Okatska
Oh, my God. Wow.
Matt Walsh
See? Fathers, Fathers.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
No good deed goes unpunished. You're right.
Atsuko Okatska
Fathers, they don't.
Matt Walsh
This is why Mother's Day is more popular, that it's literally. Father's Day is so hard for people because dads are just trying, but they're failing. Hardcore doing it.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
It's one of them. It's one of the craziest things I've ever heard. What a choice. What a choice. I so understand where his head was at, but how fucking terrifying. Those things are so realistic. They're more realistic than Madame Tussauds. Especially from far away.
Matt Walsh
This.
Atsuko Okatska
Yes. In the crowd.
Matt Walsh
Yeah. Also him explaining himself as he's entering. Oh, no, this is my wife.
Atsuko Okatska
She just died.
Matt Walsh
She was. She is. Anyway, do I have to pay for this, too? I don't know. Do you pay to?
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Because the cutout is sitting there. I relate to this, dad. I think that's exactly the kind of thing I would do, thinking it's gonna be a really lovely moment and just traumatize my child for the rest of her life.
Matt Walsh
We're all dads.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah. Indeed.
Matt Walsh
Wow. Am I high? Am I? Am I?
Atsuko Okatska
We are all dads.
Matt Walsh
I will say. Wait, can I say one thing really quick? I saw on Instagram a picture of a puppy. It was up for adoption.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah.
Matt Walsh
The caption said, four weeks old, mother is a terrier. And then it goes, don't know who father is. I was like, damn.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Even in Dogwas.
Matt Walsh
Dogs too. Yeah, yeah, dogs too. And like, across species, we all have father issues.
Atsuko Okatska
Yeah.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah, 100%.
Atsuko Okatska
I did a bad Easter Bunny thing that scared my kid. That's what I remember. My dad used to on Easter, the young kids would go to bed early and he would tape two hockey sticks together and put white socks on them. And the older kids would go, oh, the Easter bunnies come. And I hear him. And my dad would be outside and he would hop by the window.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah.
Atsuko Okatska
With ears. And the little kids. It was cute.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Yeah.
Atsuko Okatska
So I tried to recreate it. So I brought my two littles at the time into their bedroom and I had my brother outside and he had. I had made it. And I'm like, I think the Easter Bunny's coming. So I brought the little kids in there. I'm like, I think I hear him. And my brother kind of tripped and the thing went towards the window and looked like the Easter Bunny was trying to crash through the window and get the boys. And my littlest guy was so upset, he started crying. I don't like it.
Matt Walsh
Trying to get through the window.
Atsuko Okatska
And I said, okay, go away, Easter Bunny. Go away, go away. He's gone.
Matt Walsh
Oh, my God.
Atsuko Okatska
So that was sort of an ill minded tradition that did not get executed well.
Matt Walsh
Oh, my God.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Oh, man.
Matt Walsh
Fathers.
Atsuko Okatska
Fathers.
Matt Walsh
Fathers.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Oh, fathers.
Atsuko Okatska
We're all fathers.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
We're all dads. We're all dads. Well, on that note, thank you so much for coming today and telling these mad, mad stories and bearing your soul to the public. No real redeeming moments, which is exactly what we love here at Wrong Turns. And I'm very happy to know that you're both alive. These were two significant near death experience wrong Turns. Good for us.
Matt Walsh
Good for us.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Before you go, will you tell everyone where they can find you what you want them to see and watch and listen to?
Matt Walsh
Oh yes. My new special called Father actually is out on Hulu and Disney and it is about, you know, reconnecting with my dad, but also how we are all father, you know, because my fans call me Mother. They're like mother, she's mothering. But mothers have it together, you know, so I'm more Father.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
You identify more with the dads. Okay, great.
Atsuko Okatska
And Matt, I have a podcast called Second in Command. Check. Find it wherever you get pod and another one called because youe Watched. So keep an eye out for those Fantastic.
Host (Jameela Jamil)
Thank you so much for coming. Love you guys.
Matt Walsh
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Host (Jameela Jamil)

Wrong Turns with Jameela Jamil is a candid and humorous podcast where Jameela Jamil invites her funniest friends to share their most embarrassing and disastrous life stories, with no attempt to find morals or silver linings. In this episode, Jameela sits down with actress, writer, and comedian Atsuko Okatsuka and comedian and Emmy-nominated actor Matt Walsh to delve into their personal "wrong turns."
Jameela Jamil warmly welcomes her guests, highlighting their impressive backgrounds:
Notable Quote:
Jameela Jamil (02:04): "We are also thrilled to have a comedian, Emmy nominated actor and legendary improviser who is one of the co founders of the Upright Citizens Brigade... it's Matt Walsh. Hello."
The conversation kicks off with a discussion about how each guest handles disasters and emergencies in their lives.
Atsuko Okatsuka shares her experience working on a psych ward for three years, emphasizing her ability to stay level-headed in high-pressure situations.
Notable Quote:
Atsuko Okatsuka (03:32): "I worked on a psych ward. I was like a mental health worker. And the nursing staff. Slash camp counselor."
Matt Walsh relates by recounting a harrowing experience performing stand-up during a 7.1 magnitude earthquake. His ability to improvise under such chaotic circumstances stems from his personal challenges, including his mother's schizophrenia and his own undocumented status.
Notable Quote:
Matt Walsh (04:08): "I did a standup set once during a 7.1 magnitude earthquake. I went onto stage as the earthquake was hitting."
Both guests delve into specific instances of micro humiliations they've faced.
Atsuko Okatsuka narrates a chilly Christmas season in Chicago where she worked as an elf distributing candy. Due to inadequate attire, her boxer shorts were visible, and in a photo-op, one of her testicles was exposed while reading to children.
Notable Quote:
Atsuko Okatsuka (06:49): "When I sat down to read, my tunic pulled up and you could see my underwear. But also one of my testicles was hanging out."
Matt Walsh recounts his own embarrassing moment at Disneyland's water park ride, where the malfunction left him soaked and the crowd capturing his plight on camera.
Notable Quote:
Matt Walsh (09:14): "We finished… the ride has malfunctioned... and now they're filming me. They're taking pictures. And now it's like, oh my goodness. I'm wet as a napkin."
Matt shares a deeply personal story about reconnecting with his estranged father in Bali. What was intended to be a bonding trip turned into a series of misadventures, including a dangerous paraglider ride where Matt nearly drowned and injured himself.
Notable Quotes:
Matt Walsh (15:39): "I went to Bali to see my dad after seven years apart. I thought we'd bond over simple activities, but instead, we ended up on a makeshift water park ride."
Matt Walsh (21:50): "I was in the air, and they were telling me which string to pull, but I didn't understand them. I started pulling at them really fast and came crashing down into rocks."
This experience not only strained his relationship with his father but also highlighted his tendency to be a people pleaser, often putting others' expectations above his own safety and well-being.
Atsuko shares her adventurous yet perilous solo trip to Amsterdam, where she intended to experience the local culture and perhaps try weed for the first time. The trip took a dark turn when she encountered a local drug dealer who, under the influence of heroin, mishandled their transaction, leading to a tense and frightening confrontation with a police officer.
Notable Quotes:
Atsuko Okatsuka (27:08): "I wanted to challenge myself to travel alone and meet the locals. But things went south when the dealer exposed his addiction in front of us."
Atsuko Okatsuka (33:12): "I felt disrespected and confronted the cop, which nearly led to a violent encounter before a passerby intervened."
This story underscores the unpredictability of solo travel and the importance of being cautious in unfamiliar environments.
Before closing, Jameela shares a listener-submitted story from Catherine, who describes a traumatic yet humorous moment at her graduation where her father placed a cardboard cutout of her deceased mother on stage, leading to an unexpected emotional breakdown.
Notable Quote:
Jameela Jamil (39:11): "My dad had made a cardboard cutout of my mum and thought it would be lovely to have her at my graduation. I screamed and had to be carried off the stage."
This anecdote perfectly encapsulates the podcast's theme of sharing mortifying moments without seeking redemption.
As the episode wraps up, Jameela thanks Atsuko and Matt for their vulnerability and outrageous stories. Both guests promote their respective projects:
Matt Walsh introduces his new special, Father, available on Hulu and Disney Plus, which explores his relationship with his dad.
