The early church in Rome was made up of both Jews and Gentiles, who historically did not like one another as groups. Inherently this caused conflict in the church. Both groups held the other to unfair standards and looked down on one another for certain practices and behaviors. In chapters 13 and 14 Paul moves on from conflict and encourages the different groups in the church to be unified. In a foundation of love he encourages them to focus on increasing faith, put others before themselves, and to not be so critical of one another regarding issues that were of personal opinion; not foundational principles of doctrine. God desires His people to have a heart that is willing to sacrifice self for the sake of one another's conscience and encouragement.
