You call it sort of a transitional period. You were trying to.

Yes. We take the witch off the hay bale and we turn the pumpkin around. We take the scary face away and we have a whole pumpkin. That little moment, that little moment where we embrace, fall. And now here's what I'll say. Whatever you're doing is perfect. It's great. And I used to feel maybe you are doing this a little too early. And then today I went to Target and everything is out and everything is on the shelves. And. And it flipped. The switch flipped. Flipped in me. I was ready to go. I texted June, my wife, and I said, we gotta get to Target asap, because it's gone. We gotta make sure we get the things that we need. Because I'm a big believer that online shopping doesn't cut it for Christmas decorations.

Agreed.

You gotta feel it. You gotta feel the crinkle. You gotta see how much of the glitter comes off when you touch it. You know, you gotta see what is the contact, you know, on these things.

So all this to say you're getting me in a prime Christmas mood. Like, I have been around. The seal is broken. There was a moment where I'm like, is it too early? I'm already having anxiety about getting things.

[Paul Scheer]

November. Where is November? It's gone.

[Sujin Pak]

You're right. And you know what? And this is maybe where. And I admit where I'm wrong. Maybe I came down on you too hard. Maybe. I said, you know what? Maybe there's no time for transition. Maybe the transition is a mere handful of days. November 1st to November 7th, the transition.

You don't need three weeks to turn a pumpkin around.

I don't want that. No, no, no.

Some would say you could turn a pumpkin around in just half a day.

The day after Thanksgiving is where I flip the switch. That's normal.

But I'm Talking about the Halloween pumpkin. I'm talking about that Halloween pumpkin.

And I want to give. I want to give the listeners a little bit more context. This conversation happened mid October when we went to a Christmas.

Pre Halloween, pre Halloween.

[Paul Scheer]

We went to a Christmas shop. We went to traditions deep into the valley. Canoga park loved it, and we loved it. But then we talked to each other on the drive home.

[Sujin Pak]

Yeah. And you said on the drive home.

[Paul Scheer]

We had that conversation.

[Sujin Pak]

Well, because I was trying to rein in my feelings because it felt so close, but yet it's so far. We hadn't even had Halloween yet. It felt like. I don't wanna get too pumped about this. There's too many variables in the way. There's too much time. And I wanted to make sure that I manage my own expectations.

[June Diane Raphael]

Wow.

[Sujin Pak]

But you know what? COO showed me.

[Paul Scheer]

Emerald, I'm introduce something to you that's a little crude. Paul, my dear friend. Friend for years. But Christmas edging. Right. We're not blowing our load. We're doing it in phases. We're taking it up, and then we're.

I'm all on board. Well, I'll tell you the thing that you have brought into my life. I love the idea of getting it done early, getting it all done before December 1st, which is right here, this podcast. You're getting it right under the line, right. Days before.

Well, I think that I'm going to make myself more open to parties and make myself more available. As a matter of fact, you know, look. Yeah, tree time. I'm gonna say. I will just say that, you know, there was a person who reached out to me who I think wanted to go to the same party as I'm going to and asked to switch a date, a performance date with me. And I said, no, I am committed to party over. Switching dates, normally, I'm amenable, but I put my foot down his Christmas footfall for the holiday season. Yes. Not this year, Paul. Not this year. Not this year.

Oh, wow.

[Paul Scheer]

Okay. Now, Paul, for people who've just joined us, I remember the first time lo those many years ago, probably three, four years ago, you brought in some knowledge about how to approach purchasing for your partner. Purchasing for the Paul, in your life, if you will. You were very clear, like, don't fuck with ties. Don't fuck with, like, wallets.

[June Diane Raphael]

Remember? He was like, that's too personal of a purchase. I mean, those words haunt me to this day.

[Sujin Pak]

I feel like you want. Maybe this is an oversimplification, but I believe that for Christmas. The magic of Christmas is recreating that feeling that you got when you were a kid and you opened up a toy. Right? You want that, right? Yes. There are great things out there that you really probably need, but you. You want that toy. What is that toy? What is that? Adult toy?

[Paul Scheer]

Okay, so it's not socks.

[Sujin Pak]

You need that.

[Paul Scheer]

[Sujin Pak]

Not socks. It's not socks. And look, I believe in the idea of you can throw in a practical. You can definitely throw in a practical. But let's not make it all practical. Let's not make it. Because we're gonna forget about that practical. We need something to play with, something to occupy us. Whether that's programming something, whether that is just in the mix looking. We need tactile sensation that we're not going to get when a shirt, a tie, a belt. And I know that's a very traditional way of looking at things. And look, you can buy expensive stuff, but we want that. We need something. Something that we wouldn't buy for ourselves. Even if we don't use it for much longer after Christmas, we need it for the moment. It's like Heidi Klum dress for that Halloween party. Don't worry about. How are you gonna get the paint off? It's only for that one shot. And you do it and you leave, like. And that's what I want Christmas to be. Wow.

[Paul Scheer]

Yeah.

[Sujin Pak]

All in. That's my theory. That's my theory.

I love it. I live in that theory. But what if you're living with someone who is more of a practical holiday approacher? I don't wanna say Grinch. I don't wanna say Grinch. Cause I say that under my breath in private. I don't need to say it in public. Yeah, but you should say it twice. But go on. I'm with you, Paul. I want Christmas morning. I want people's panties to fall off, you know, I want them to be like you, you tired, dead person. Got this amazing life thrilling thing last year. I got my husband. I don't even know what it's called. You sit on it and then, like, you control it with.

It's like a little butt boogie board. Right? Like, I've seen this Before.

Yeah.

And it's like a triangle. You put your feet straight out. Yeah. It's like a tricycle. Go Kart.

That's awesome. Everybody took turns on it. My 80 year old father took turns on it. He came out there, people were laughing, people were falling off of it. Things were happening.

[Sujin Pak]

Now, look, I'm gonna say this. I want to say this honestly too. I believe that my rule is more for men and not necessarily for women. Like, when I get things for June, I do my fun stuff, which seems to be underappreciated by her in the stocking.

[June Diane Raphael]

That is a great rule. Cause you're right. You're right. Generally, women don't want fun stuff. I do not want things off script. You're absolutely right.

[Sujin Pak]

The stocking is where it lives. And I'll tell you one thing that I got June last year, that was one of those stocking things. And she got obsessed with it. It was something that I saw one of the Kardashians promoting on Instagram. And it was basically. It was like a headband that was attached to a rubber ball and you could box it. It was like a boxo ball or something like that. I bought a bunch of these dumb balls. To your point, just like that. Everyone put these dumb headbands on and are boxing this ball. Do we use it much past the new year? No, but. But that's okay. Cause that day, everyone's like, I'm gonna try it. I'm gonna try it.

That's.

[Sujin Pak]

And you know, we're all bought, you know, And June liked that. But that was. That's a stocking stuff. That's where I live.

[June Diane Raphael]

That's where the whimsy is for you.

[Paul Scheer]

Okay, so I will say this, that I think a lot of the things that I mentioned last year still hold true to this year. So you can listen. There's a lot of things that I didn't go back to because I was like, you know what? They are, for the most part, available to you this year as well. They are. Go back to that. Well. So I wanted to make sure that.

[June Diane Raphael]

Yes, all this. You did a whole. Stocking stuffers. You did a whole thing like that. That I went down the rabbit hole.

[Sujin Pak]

And it's great. Yes. So there's a lot. Now I gave you all a bunch of different things. You tell me where you want to start and I will dive in.

Well, speaking of diving in, Paul, one of my only friends who Actually got a cold plunge.

[Sujin Pak]

Yes. Talk about it.

[Paul Scheer]

Talk about it. Lifestyle.

[Sujin Pak]

Here's what I'll say. There is nothing more upsetting than listening to somebody talk about their cold plunge. So if this is gonna bother you, I wanna give you a moment to. You can fast forward, but if you would like, let me chat to you about it for a second, I'm gonna tell you, it's gonna change your motherfucking life. This thing is the best I've been doing it since March. Every single day that I am home, I am doing the cold punch. If I get sick, I'm going in that cold punch. I get better quicker. Here's another thing I have found. This is unscientific, but kind of scientific. I had taken a blood test before I had gotten my cold plunge. Not because I got a cold plunge, just because we were checking out something. I took one three months after I got it.

Yeah.

[Sujin Pak]

Metabolism, boom. Boosted inflammation down, right? Things had changed. And my doctor was like, what are you doing different? I said, cold plunge. And he said, I also do a cold plunge practice as well. And he goes, I find it to be incredibly important. And the health benefits are true and real. And here is the thing. You watch these videos online of these people going like, oh, it's 32 degrees and I'm in that cold punch. Fuck it, you don't need it. 59 and below and three minutes, you could go colder, but 59 and below and three minutes and cool up. We all know. We actually all know Steve Harvey does it as well. Because when we were on Family Feud, that's where Steve and I connected on the cold plunge.

[Paul Scheer]

Yep, yep, yep. And being bald.

[Sujin Pak]

And being bald, I mean. And I will tell you this much, Steve Harvey carries himself like a man who does not recognize or want to recognize that he's bald. And I appreciate that. Where I embrace it more, I embrace the fact that, yes, this is happening. Steve. I think if you said, you know Steve, you're bald, he would be like, what?

[June Diane Raphael]

Yeah, yeah.

[Sujin Pak]

So I will tell you a little bit about these cold plunges. There are. Look, I don't know if you got these Boku bucks. Go get yourself one of these beautiful cold plunges. They are. I mean, you can get something called the plunge, which is great. I opted to go for the cryo spring cold plunge because of a couple reasons. One, I wasn't sure that this was gonna take, right? And I was like, I'm not spending a shitload of money on something that I'm not confident in. Cryospring. Is a portable cold plunge ice bath. You blow it up, right. It can deflate, it inflates, it is small and it's a tub. It's not like a pickle barrel which they also have. I love the customer service here. I think it is perfect. It's an entry level item. It goes from these plunges that sometimes can cost nine to twelve thousand dollars. Nine to twelve thousand. This cryospring I think you can get for like four thousand.

[Paul Scheer]

Okay, okay.

[Sujin Pak]

You know, you know like that's not, it's not nothing.

[Paul Scheer]

No, no, no.

[Sujin Pak]

But I'm talking about in, in the grand scheme of what these cold plunges are going for 12, 000 and really the thing that is making it so expensive is the chiller. Because I got a chiller. A chiller is a lot of people think, oh, cold plunger. I'm not gonna go get ice every day. Nor should you. You don't need to get ice because you got a chiller. The chiller is basically like this little mini water cooler that you attach to your cold plunge that circulates, cleans and chills your water. So I have it on my, I have an app, I set it so at every morning at 6am it starts chilling up. So by the time I'm up, I'm able to get in it and go. So it's ready to go. So. So that way you don't have to get ice. A lot of people, I forget when I talk about this. No, there's no ice involved. If you just want to get the blow up tub, you could put your own ice in it. But who wants to go to the store every day and get a bunch of ice? Yeah, I know, I know some people who live in like the Midwest, they're.

[Paul Scheer]

Just, they're just going outside. They're. Yeah, they're in the cowboy tub.

[Sujin Pak]

And what a lot of people do in the Midwest is they have one of these outside and you can get like a horse trough as well, which is I think even cheaper. And they let it get cold and in the morning they take a, a little mallet and a hammer and they break the ice in and then you get in that. There's three ways to do it if you're going to do it that like if you live in cold weather climate and you want to try it out, get yourself a horse trough. It's not going to be a great Christmas gift, but it will be, you know, you have to really explain it.

Yeah. Hopefully you're getting it for someone who really wants the Horse trough understands what it's for.

[Sujin Pak]

I still think you got to get the chiller. You got to like, you got to show more than a horse trough. But I like this cryo spring one as an introduction. And if you have somebody in your life and you have a lot of money, the plunge and the renew therapy cold plunge are. They're aspirational.

Yes. You can put it in a backpack.

Yeah. And that's kind of. I mean, that's amazing. I mean, that's a huge. It's self cleaning on this site. It's easy to set up. And then it also can be a hot tub.

[Paul Scheer]

This Paul, you've never brought up. You've never brought up that it could be a hot tub.

[Sujin Pak]

Yes, it can be a hot tub. It's. If you get the correct chiller. There's different types of chillers. One that just does it cold, one just does hot and cold. But yes, it works the same exact way. It can be your own portable hot tub. You jack that temperature to whatever you want. And you know what? I don't sell that part of it. And you're right, I should probably get behind that part of it because that is.

So whatever your taste is, if it is like Clockwork Orange, if it is Star Trek, if it's a Matrix, they have these great beautiful looking often with like cool merch inside. Like Scott Pilgrim comes with like a. Like this, like a little disc inside of it. Like a. Like a. Like a pin, you know. So there's a lot of really cool things in here. So that's just like go Google Titans of Cult and you'll see the amazing work that they do on classic great movies. Just. And then whatever you're. Whatever you're into, they might have it.

It is. I don't get massages as much and as much as I like all these things, I just find my body to be in a different state of relaxation. I'm not pulling muscles the way I used to. But I will say that the one that is unbeatable as always is the Theragun. That is my go to. I love the Theragun. I got the Thera Roller. Now the Thera Roller is like the idea of the Theragun, but it's in a roller form. And I always found it to be fine. I didn't love it. And then I saw this chirp RPM rolling percussive massager. Now, what this is is essentially a roller with two handles on either side. It has. And you can move it all around your body like you would, but it's rolling for you. Or you pop it in the base, and I can, like, lay on the floor and just have this working out my calf. I can have it working out my feet. It just is whatever, like. So if you put it on the base, it goes automatically. If I put it on my body, I have a button that controls it going on and off.

Wow. Wow.

And so, you know, think of it as a giant rolling pin that you can either activate by the touch of a button or you can put on a base and it activates for you. And I will say that the best thing that this does is works out those parts of my body that I really can't get. Like, for me, it is always my calf. And, like, just sitting on this, just putting this under my calf, in watching tv, you don't have to do anything. It will work out. It will fix issues. No time flat. I love this thing.

Can you put your feet on it? The bottoms of your feet?

The bottoms of your feet. You do everything on it. It goes everywhere.

So guy, for those that obviously just are listening, it rolls itself, but it looks like almost like beads, but they're like knobs. Right. That give you that. You know what I mean? Extra. It's not just like a flat surface. So it gets into all the nooks and the crannies, the fascia.

It's worth checking out if you're a person that, you know, runs. If you're hamstrings, feet, calves, thighs, quads, arms, shoulders, back, it and glutes. That's the other thing. I don't like doing those exercises, those it and glute ones. Like, it's hard for me go on a roller. But this, like, it almost helps me get it. And I can't really do that with the theragun besides just pounding into it.

Yeah. This is a different move.

Gives me that gets in. Gets in deep. It's great.

Last year you brought us the backbone. This year it's the PS5 portal.

Yes. So this is something that I've been dying for because I like the backbone. I talked about this last year. The backbone's a great idea. You put your phone in it, you can play your games you know, whatever system you have, your Steam games, you could play your PlayStation games. This is basically the same concept as a backbone, but you don't have to put your phone in it. And that was really the issue that I always had with the backbone. It's like, I gotta take my phone out of a case, I gotta put it into another thing. Then I'm put it in here and then I'm here. It just felt cumbersome. This is an all in one PlayStation Portal remote player for the PS5. It has a screen attached to it. You can play all of your PS5 games as long as you are connected to WI Fi and it's a recreation of the PS5 controller. Now, as a parent, I find it very hard for me to say to my wife, I'm going to go downstairs and play video games. But, but there are many times when my wife is completely asleep next to me in the bed and I want to be next to my wife because I love my wife and I'm like, but I also would like to play some NBA 2K. This is the way that I'm gonna be able to do this. This is great for parents who have that need for video games, but also wanna be in the same room as their spouse. Because Juna's not gonna sit in any room where I'm playing a video game. No. So this is great. I know that there's been some issues as far as like where you can travel with it, like in a hotel and stuff. You have to be connected to WI fi. I haven't been able to speak to that. But if you're in your home and you wanna be able to play your games and just in a different room.

Or quietly in the dark while your wife sleeps next to you.

[Sujin Pak]

Yeah. Or as you're putting down your kids. I know that's a very specific thing to say. I can't play the video game machine that's in my living room, but I think a lot of people can identify with that. I will tell you, you know, you're sick at home, you have all the time in the world. Play some video games.

Yes. So this is something. Again, I'm trying to go different directions here. There's a bunch of great books out. I wanted to use this as a jumping off point. So if you have someone in your life who likes to make tiki drinks or likes to make drinks or has a home bar does anything like this. Again, I'm trying to think out of the box a little bit. And this is like the right way to do tiki drinks. This is like, made by these two people who founded Smuggler's Cove, which is like the best tiki bar in the country. I've drank there, and when I drank there, I was like, oh, that's like a tiki drink. And I feel like I know a lot of people like to buy these tiki cups and do all this sort of stuff. It's like a fun book that you wouldn't have. Like, yeah, I don't need a book in the bar. But this is like, if you have somebody who likes to make concoctions, this is a good concoction book.

And take a page from such and pak. Why not pair this with two tiki glasses or cups, Some rum.

I will also just say, if we're talking about books very briefly, highly recommend. Reggie Watts's book is a great stocking stuffer. Highly recommend. The brand new Alan Partridge book. Alan Partridge is a character comedy characters played by Steve Coogan for decades. And one of the. It's so, so funny. He's got podcasts, he's got books. He has a brand new book called Big Beacon, which is fantastic. Just really, really solid. And I also want to give a shout out to Danny Pellegrino, who has a Christmas book. It's all like Christmas stories, Christmas short stories, you know. So there's a couple of, like, good books that are out right now that I'm like, I've earmarked or I've read or I've gotten into. This is just kind of like some side books. By the way, I'll be releasing my book in May.

I think when you leave your phone behind and just have a camera or you just go and have fun with the camera, you're gonna get better pictures and you're not worrying about like an Instagram moment, you're just kind of grabbing moments. There's a brand new app. I don't know if you guys are on this app, but I'm on it and I love it. I'm trying to find people to get on it. It's called Laps, but Laps is the same idea. It's like back in the day, we were having fun. We took pictures on our cameras. We don't know what they look like. We're not trying to find the perfect picture. We just grab it and then a month later we find out what it is. And this kind of rugged, waterproof, like Wi Fi 1 is the perfect mix between both worlds.

It allowed you to create a steadicam effect on your phone. It's a little holder and it, it has been. For me it was the best, one of the best gifts I've ever gotten because it just hit me where I was like, I love this. This is great. I would Never even bought this for myself. It has taken over my family. It's a fast paced card game. If I try to explain it, we'll be here for longer than how I talked about cold plunges. But I'll say this, it is fun. Trust me, it's fun. It will take a beat to learn, but there are video tutorials. It is basically like competitive. Solitaire is maybe the easiest way to describe it, but it's just a fun family game. You can get an expansion pack that actually allows more people to play it. But it's a great holiday game. And I'm a big believer in giving these in the stocking because that night you need something to do. Let's learn this game. Now. If you want to, like, you know, gild the lily, you learn it before so you can explain it to everybody else and you get it out there. But it's a game that you give to somebody and they can go for it. I think that's the.

And kids, how, how young? How young? Because I love card games.

I think you gotta have at least like, it says 8 and up. And I find that to be fair, it goes quick, it go. You know, it's, it's very boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. But, you know, I have to always tell June, like, we're playing against kids. You have to, like, slow it down a little bit. She is, she doesn't allow that to go.

Mean, talking about elevating something that you already know. The L.L. bean Deluxe Scrabble set.

Why I like this, you can monogram your own Scrabble set. You could put a name on your Scrabble board for those who like it. And I think that, like, this is, you know, for me, I like a Scrabble game, but if you put my name on it, if you engrave it, put a little plaque on it, I'm gonna put that out. It looks great. It's L.L. bean. It looks nice. It's a nice looking board. The top comes off. It's all easy peasy. I just think it's a nice, it will look nice out, but it also is, like, personalized. And I think again, we're going to somebody who likes Scrabble. You put your name on it, you do it up good. I think that this is a good, a very nice, easy gift. And it's not like checkers or chess, which you won't Play. I think that more people are gonna, like, sit and play a game, a game of scrabble, and it's L.L. bean.

Oh, and L.L. bean. I mean, you know, you had. You recommended the Slippers one year, and that was a hit for Scott.

I mean, can I tell you the thing that I recommend now? I mean, in L.L. bean, I've gotten deep into L.L. bean is they have a blanket that has redefined our home. We got three of them because we like them.

I believe it is called the Wicked Plush Throw. I'm pretty sure it's. That's what it is. I will double check to make sure. But they have this blanket that is so warm, so snuggly, and you got to get the biggest version that they have. It has become. Every family member fights over this. My kids, my wife, everybody. It's not too hot. It's just like the comfiest, coziest blanket you will ever have.

Like, they're just little silly fun tags. I have one that is Peltzer Inventions, which is from Gremlins. You can find these, like, little fun pop key tags, and they're great also.

And they got a lot of Hanukkah stuff in there, too. And now I have been, look, we play pickleball. And I have mixed feelings about pickleball in the sense that what. Here's what I'll say, I like playing pickleball. I like the culture of pickleball. I don't like watching pickleball. So I'm talking to you right now as a person who's like, hey, I want to play. I want to have a good time with my friends. I think it's a social gathering, and I want to look good while I'm doing it. And this website or this clothing company called P Sundays, it should be like, Sundays with a P. It's P Sundays. And they have great looking pickleball clothes. It's just pickleball apparel. They got hoodies, jackets, polos. I love the way it looks. It's elevated fashion from, like, skirts to leggings to sweatshirts. They also have rackets and things like that, which are great, but they have. I love the design. It's. It's a little, like, rainbow flag with a P and an S. The stuff looks great. And I can tell you, as somebody who has worn this stuff, it is great. So you have somebody in your life. And again, I said no clothes. I feel like this jumps a level because it's pickleball clothes. It's. It's different.

It's like, oh, no, this is very fashion. This is very young, millennial. This is pickleball for someone, you know what I mean? That maybe doesn't live in a retirement home, which is a lot of pickleball folks nowadays. So this is like a little chaunaugy.

Yeah, they're beautiful.

They really are. It's nice. And it's, like, not overtly comical. It's like, I feel like a lot of pickleball stuff I look at is like. It's like pickleball. Or it's like, you know, it's. Or it's, you know, it's like, dink me once, shame on you. Whatever. You know, it's like, it's not. There's no jokes here. Right. I think one of the. And I appreciate that, like, one of the shirts I love so much is just the score. It's just like 002. Yeah, I love it. It's great.

Amazing. So I think the last thing here is something that I'm really excited about. It's. It comes to us from Etsy. It's a movie marquee. Mylar.

This is aspirational. I don't even have this. A friend of mine has it, and I love it so much. So basically what this is is if you grew up and you are in Your, you know, late 30s, early 40s. You probably remember going to a movie theater and seeing like this thing hanging up in the lobby where it tells you where to go, right? It's like, okay, you know, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is playing down here. Top Gun's playing down here. Whatever it is. It's the old school vinyl movie marquee. So you get this light box, you can hang it on your wall. And then they make these little Mylar inserts so you can get your favorite movies. You can find pretty much everything. They make new ones and old ones. If you have a home theater, it's perfect for that. But if you just are like a fan of old school pop culture shit, it's great because you can also, like. It's like you can hang it up on your wall. It's a piece of art. Because each one of these Mylar strips, again, there's a whole world of people who deal in these Mylar movie strips. You can find classic ones. You can find people that will make new ones for you. You can do whatever you want. So I love these light boxes. There's a million of these light boxes. If you look on Etsy. It's one of those things I've been really wanting to get. It's really cool and just. It's like an old throwback. But I. I just love. I just love it. It reminds me of my childhood, of going to see movies.

Yeah, this is pretty good. This is pretty great for Scotty. I gotta figure. I gotta. It's. It's gonna be figuring out what movies.

Well, here's the thing, right? You can also get. And this is where. If you just type in. Cause there's a lot of them, right? If you type in Mylar movie poster, you can see that there's a single one. There's four, there's six, There's. You can get them in any kind of a thing. You know what you could do for Scott is you could get one made for his movie for between two friends.

Yeah. And then hit right in the middle. That's genius. You know, so there are people who make them, and you'll find tons of them online. Tons of them. And they're all cheap. They're really, really great. And they're just fun. I just love them. Like, they like this one. Like, there's 300 ones to choose from. You just pick what you want. It's.

And I'll say this, the one is all is equally cool too. Like you can get one. There's so many versions of this. It's just a light up box so people are ready to go and any way you want. This is one that I want but I have not like pulled the trigger on. Ah.
