Sujin Pak

Kulap Vilaysak
Wait.
Sujin Pak
Carter's welcome back to another episode of Add to Cart. I am your auntie, Culap Vilasaki.
Kulap Vilaysak
And I'm your other auntie, Sujim Park.
Sujin Pak
It's.
Kulap Vilaysak
It's almost Galentine's day.
Sujin Pak
That's right. That's right. We're.
Kulap Vilaysak
We're cruising through this year.
Sujin Pak
Are we? Is it a cruise? It's more like to me. Yeah. If it's in water, it's choppy. There are rapids and dysentery inside the boat.
Kulap Vilaysak
Yeah, nobody's in the mood for this. Nobody's in the mood for Valentine's Day. I see that. It's just. I'm dry. I see the stands. And by the way, like, I've seen a few stands at like, Bristol Farms. You know, and Target, you know, and it's just like sad. There's no energy to the Valentine's Day displays this year. Do you notice that people are just like here, pink heart, heart pink just like. No, I don't know. I don't know anybody that's in the mood for Valentine's. I feel like the story of this year was. Is still here.
Sujin Pak
Yeah, absolutely.
Kulap Vilaysak
We're not. Nobody's ready to move on to hearts and stuff like that.
Sujin Pak
No, no. But I mean, I'm doing that. That parent dance too of just like, you know, with Emmy and pretty early on I. I put up some garlands just to kind of like, you know, put lipstick on a pig.
Kulap Vilaysak
Like I said, you know, my Christmas village still up. Maybe I add. Add a few hearts in there.
Sujin Pak
There you go.
Kulap Vilaysak
Just throw a few candy hearts on the doorstep of. Of my ski chalet.
Sujin Pak
When Christmas ended, I took down the Christmas, but I left a lot of winter, so the trees are still up. I'm. You know.
Kulap Vilaysak
Oh, I like that. I like the differentiation that you have.
Sujin Pak
Yeah. This is. This was all spurned from deep dive Jessica and in June talking about the Yuletide and that Christmas was day one. I mean, well, I'm sure wax poetically about this as months go by, but it's basically like I never say it right. Higi Haigi.
Kulap Vilaysak
Yes. I don't know. Yeah.
Sujin Pak
H y.
Kulap Vilaysak
It's tge. It's that season. It's cozy season.
Sujin Pak
Just I've been keeping it cozy. But, you know, pretty soon I will be everything. My garage packed such a. Packed with Christmas stuff because the. The Vilizaq Aukerman household and the Sheer Raphael household will be combining our. You're doing Christmas stuff into a shared storage space.
Kulap Vilaysak
You guys had talked. That's so smart.
Sujin Pak
We're going to be doing that. We're in the midst.
Kulap Vilaysak
It's just making room for more stuff.
Sujin Pak
That's right. I thought I had a ceiling.
Kulap Vilaysak
Now you do. It's just a little higher.
Sujin Pak
Yep, that's right.
Kulap Vilaysak
A little wider.
Sujin Pak
Get ready to hear me talking about exter your stuff next year. But no, no, no, no. I mean, not.
Kulap Vilaysak
We're not doing it. Don't worry.
Sujin Pak
That's next year. Not next year. I mean, next season. Next season. This year. But we're not doing it today. Don't worry. Everyone put down your pitchforks. Okay? Put them down.
Kulap Vilaysak
My pitchfork is. Is dull because it's still Christmas time. You know, we're still. We're still wrapping it up in however way we want. To wrap it up at whatever speed.
Sujin Pak
That's right.
Kulap Vilaysak
And that's our prerogative.
Sujin Pak
That's our prerogative again. It's your golden year. How are we going to describe this year, Sue? We need a short shorthand to talk about the march towards your 50th. Like, what. What. What should we call it?
Kulap Vilaysak
Is it coffin time?
Sujin Pak
Okay, so it's the death march.
Kulap Vilaysak
Yeah.
Sujin Pak
No, come on, let's.
Kulap Vilaysak
Oh, you want to dress that up. You want to put the lipstick back on the pig.
Sujin Pak
That's right. You know, let's. This is a campaign, I think.
Kulap Vilaysak
Campaign.
Sujin Pak
Yeah, yeah, it's a military campaign towards you turning 50.
Kulap Vilaysak
Yeah. Towards death, the final destination.
Sujin Pak
Well, you're not dying at 50, though.
Kulap Vilaysak
Yeah, but you're. You're definitely on the. On the bullet train.
Sujin Pak
Okay?
Kulap Vilaysak
Not a lot of stops, you know, before 50. You got stops. You got college, You. You. You know, maybe you get a post grad, you get a job, you get an internship, maybe you get married, maybe you have kids, maybe you get a pet. Lots of stops after 50. It's final destination. You're just. There's not a lot of stops along the way.
Sujin Pak
Okay, so could we call it the bullet Train?
Kulap Vilaysak
The Bullet train.
Sujin Pak
It's Bullet train.
Kulap Vilaysak
I am on that bullet train. Having a blast, by the way. Hair in the wind, eyelashes askew, missing.
Sujin Pak
You know, a couple sets in the middle. Okay, that's all right. That's fine.
Kulap Vilaysak
That's fine. Nobody's even looking. That's the other thing. You're going at a speed. Nobody even registers that you're in the room.
Sujin Pak
That's right. Okay, well, look, let's. Let's continue on. Sure, it's Galentine's day. Sure, it's Valentine's Day. Yes, we're in February. These are all truths. But I think we continue with this theme of just like, what are our strategies? What are our strategies here, Sue? Just how are we. What are we doing to survive?
Kulap Vilaysak
To higgy it up and.
Sujin Pak
That's right. So let's. Let's jump into our cart, Sue. Let's jump. Let's dive in. Let's do it.
Kulap Vilaysak
How are we keeping cozy?
Sujin Pak
How are we keeping cozy, Sue? I'm thinking, and my hope is easy cooking and easy hosting. What do I mean by that, Sue?
Kulap Vilaysak
Yeah, well, what does that mean?
Sujin Pak
What do I mean? So I didn't do much cooking last year for Scott and I. I leaned heavily on former sponsor Cook Unity. We got like a free cart once, and then I have uninterrupted continued On. I highly recommend it. I love it. I like it as a. As a. A food service for a number of reasons. One, it's you. You can. It can be about diet, but it's like, to me, it's a way to like, avoid uber eating or dashing or any of that stuff. And also, it's like known cooks, and there's Asian food. There's just like a lot of variety.
Kulap Vilaysak
I gotta get back on this. Cause I loved it. I had it for a while, and then for some reason I moved. I love just changing it up.
Sujin Pak
Yes.
Kulap Vilaysak
What I loved about this one that was different is, number one, they had a lot of different kind of ethnic foods.
Sujin Pak
Yes.
Kulap Vilaysak
You kind of get sick of just a, you know, a grilled chicken and some. Yeah.
Sujin Pak
Esther. Esther.
Kulap Vilaysak
Milk bar.
Sujin Pak
Like, there's so many different yellow.
Kulap Vilaysak
Her stuff is great. And you can kind of categorize by chef. And then you don't have to cook.
Sujin Pak
And you don't have to cook. And it's great for lunches.
Kulap Vilaysak
It's great for, you know, you just heat it up.
Sujin Pak
And I like, too, is that it gets delivered in. In a bag. They. They drop it off. Somebody drops it off, and then they pick up the old one. It's less waste is also why I like it.
Kulap Vilaysak
I feel like since I. Cause I, I. I feel like I signed up for this way in the beginning. I think they've really worked out some kinks, added some new things and streamlined it. So I am going to be using. Thank you. Your code.
Sujin Pak
Yes.
Kulap Vilaysak
And get 50. Wait, so wait, if I use your code, I get 50 off?
Sujin Pak
Yeah. Your. Your. Your order, plus free shipping. We both get that.
Kulap Vilaysak
Okay.
Sujin Pak
Which is fantastic, by the way. If you just want to do your first order, you get $50 off. But, you know, Sue's coming back. The other thing is it's usually also 15% cash back on Rakuten, too, so that's nice. Speaking of another sponsor, just stacks.
Kulap Vilaysak
Stacks on Stacks.
Sujin Pak
Stack it, baby.
Kulap Vilaysak
Okay. By the way, not being paid to say any of this currently that I know of.
Sujin Pak
Not currently, but we're always open to and available and ready. Our DMs are wide open. So for like eight meals a week, it's like around 100 bucks. And that's. That ain't too shabby in these times.
Kulap Vilaysak
I mean, living in Santa Barbara, that's downright clearance.
Sujin Pak
Yeah. Yeah. And I'm not saying I'm not going to do that, but I'm just describing to you what my year has been, and I want to I want to. I want to dust off my crock pot. I want to dust off my instapot. That's what the easy cooking and this idea of, like, you know, pulling myself off of social media and interacting with people in real life and wanting to, you know, be with community. That's the easy hosting part. That's an opportunity for me to, like, crack open, like, my cookbooks, like, more as more get loose in the Kitchen by Molly Baz. I used to like. I mean, I have so many cookbooks that I haven't even touched, but that.
Kulap Vilaysak
One, that one is fantastic. I love that cookbook. It's so easy. Because it's not. It is about a lot of it. It's. And I hate to use this term, but just for sake of ease, it is like girl eating at its highest.
Sujin Pak
Yeah.
Kulap Vilaysak
What do they call that? Remember, it was like a trend for a while. You know, easy entertaining. That's right. Girl dinner. Thank you. Young one. Young maiden, Young tiff. Wait, so when you're doing these mahjong, hosting these, you're also providing, of course, some kind of light bites or.
Sujin Pak
No, it's like snacks. People are bringing things. It's really, it's, you know, it's like, all right, time to play run and get your little cheese.
Kulap Vilaysak
Oh, you're not eating while you're playing.
Sujin Pak
Yeah, it's like you can. It's like some snacks, but it's not like a full thing. But I. That said, I do. I'm like, I. I do want to, like, call the besties. Be like, I want to do a night where I cook you dinner and then we play maj. Like, that's. That, like, is a fun.
Kulap Vilaysak
Yeah. And, And. But it make it easy because you guys are going to be scarfing that down.
Sujin Pak
That's right.
Kulap Vilaysak
Get your grubby little hands and your $2 and your $1 bill.
Sujin Pak
Yes, yes. So what I'm thinking of is like, informal, small, family type dinners.
Kulap Vilaysak
Okay.
Sujin Pak
You know, like, I would, you know, I would have, like a main course, a veg or a salad, and then people can bring additional sides, desserts, drinks, and if you don't bring something, you do the dishes. You know what I mean? Like, this is what I like. It's a lift, but it's not like a heavy lift for me. That's what I kind of like, am envisioning. And like, also, like, so my fantasy is like, Emmy, you know, this is one, like, pals come over. Four, five pals come over. We eat with Scott, we eat with Emmy. Then Emmy Scott takes Emmy up, does the bedtime routine. I retire to the living room with my pals and play mahjong. What a perfect night. What a perfect night. What a perfect weeknight. And the other fantasy I want to paint is, like, I've had for years now, this idea of like, Sunday suppers, like an open door sort of Sunday supper, you know, pho, where you just have big pots and people just come and go. And people can bring stuff too. I just have that fantasy.
Kulap Vilaysak
Like, couldn't even imagine having just even the tip of that fantasy under my mind. I'm like, my shoulders are hunched up just here listening to you. My, my, my neck muscles are tight. Yeah.
Sujin Pak
Like, and I was like, I was like. Is the fantasy once, once a week? No. Maybe once a month. Could be once a month. At least do it once to see how it feels. You know what I mean? But, like, that's to have communal and nourishing experiences. That's what I crave. This is what I think a strategy that I'm going to lean in on. I think, I think I'm gonna try. I'm definitely gonna try. I don't. Some of these things aren't realistic. Like, it's not going to be really. And it probably is not going to be monthly, but I, I. Why not? Like, why not? Like, why not try it?
Kulap Vilaysak
It's just one more step on. Just a little step on, on the, on the checkerboard. You guys are already getting together for mahjong. You're hosting every once in a while, right? Like, you guys are taking turns, and on one of those turns you put a crock pot.
Sujin Pak
Yeah.
Kulap Vilaysak
And I think that that's fun. And like you said, what you're trying to figure out is easy hosting, it can be separate.
Sujin Pak
The mahjong. I am combining the two ideas, but it's also like, it's just, it is nice because again, the mahjong piece is like you. I really want to stress that there isn't a lot we are socializing, but it's not at a sort of deep level. Like, it is a very, it's really game, game centered. But like, the, the idea of, like the Sunday suppers and these family dinners are to, like, really, you know, get closer and to know what people are up to and to really have, like, full conversations. Like, that's like the dream. That's the dream. And it's a very accessible dream.
Kulap Vilaysak
This isn't. When we say fantasy, it's not a capital F. It's like, this is very easy to do. You're kind of already doing it. I find that these. This is, you know, this is kind of nice. Like we're at the beginning of the year. We're thinking about, like, what is this year gonna be for us. We did an episode on what to leave behind, what to keep, and now we're looking at. I don't wanna say resolutions.
Sujin Pak
Cause I know I was thinking that too, Sue. I was like, oh, wow.
Kulap Vilaysak
This is like tensions or fantasies with the small F. Like what are your small f fantasies for 2025? Very doable. But I think the key to that small F is fun.
Sujin Pak
Yeah.
Kulap Vilaysak
What do you actually enjoy doing? The thing about resolutions are I often find that they generally fall into the category of things you hate to do but should do.
Sujin Pak
Yeah. And there's a reason why you don't do them.
Kulap Vilaysak
But the fantasy list, that F is what's fun for you. My. My thing is traveling.
Sujin Pak
Yeah.
Kulap Vilaysak
That's fun for me. So make making this year the intention of never being home is very doable and fun for me. Yeah.
Sujin Pak
Yeah. And we keep going back to this word because of course I too resist resolutions and stuff. But I. Strategies. Are these strategies to survive.
Kulap Vilaysak

Okay, so my cart, I guess you know, along the themes of of what's keeping the the Winter Candle flame going. I've been consuming a lot so I thought I'd do an add to queue. We haven't done that in a while. What am I watching? What am I listening to? What am I reading? And I. Over the winter break and while everyone was skiing and I was watching mainly from a bay window, I really got into Ozark.
Sujin Pak
Yeah, no, people love that. I haven't. I haven't seen an episode yet. Cool.
Kulap Vilaysak
Op.
Sujin Pak
Really?
Kulap Vilaysak
I'm shocked that you haven't seen it because you guys are such a t vaucher. Wait, has Scott seen.
Sujin Pak
I don't think so. I don't think so. Hard to say.
Kulap Vilaysak
Whoa. Like, the mahjong has taken over your life. Ozarks had taken over my life. I. I couldn't. And there's four seasons.
Sujin Pak
I was just gonna ask that.
Kulap Vilaysak
Juicy. It's a thick, thick. Oh, sorry. It's Ozark. Okay, fine. That. Thank you, Tiffany. So Ozark. And it's such a juicy steak. And it's not. At first I was like, I'm not quite sure this is my flavor. But, you know, I. I wanted something and I had heard. So anyway, I got really into it, and, I mean, I just burned through it. I barely came up to breathe. And so that led me to another series on Netflix, which is my add to Q. Cause Ozark is great. And ku. I'm begging you to start watching it because I'm dying to talk to someone about it. It's too late for most people. You know what I mean? People have already watched it or they're not interested, so you're gonna love it. Then it led to this series called Missing youg. And I'm only on episode two, and it's fantastic. And the summary of the show is about 11 years ago, this detective, Cat Donovan, was madly in love, engaged to this man, and then he just disappeared, ghosted. And then 11 years later, she's on a dating app and his face appears. And that sort of is the premise of it, but it is a web of deceit and lies and crime and murder. And it's so good. And everyone's linked, you know, it's a little bit like Clue. Nobody is innocent. You're trying to figure out, you know, where the smoking gun is. And it was fantastic. So I thought that was. That's been really great.
Sujin Pak
Is that starring anybody we know or is like, unknowns? Oh, cool.
Kulap Vilaysak
No, it's a British series. And the woman that plays Cat Donovan is a British actress, I assume. Rosalind Elizar. I'm not sure if I'm pronouncing that. She's fantastic. She's so good. She kind of Is that like. I think it's. Can you imagine trying to play a police detective but still be sexy? So there's not a lot of. You know, that's a hard thing to do, but she just does it really well. She's. It's just fun. And there's something I think about, like, British series, it has a different sensibility. It's not as dark sometimes as I think American series can get. You know, there's a little bit of a light hardness to it. So I just. I really like it. And then we all have to start. Exo Kitty Season 2 is on Netflix. Already finished it. Dang it. I'm so into this. Missing you one night. I know. It is. It is a thing. It's a peach tart.
Sujin Pak
That's the thing. It's like, this is. You know, like, I haven't seen Ozark. It's because, like, I can't be challenged right now.
Kulap Vilaysak
Yeah. And you got a lot on your plate. Yes. You got the mahjong. You got the crock pot. There's a lot on your plate.
Sujin Pak
I need confection.
Kulap Vilaysak
Yeah.
Sujin Pak
And that's what Exo Kitty is. Yeah. Again, we find ourselves, oftentimes the aunties are talking about product that was not made for us. And yet.
Kulap Vilaysak
And yet here we are, just gobbling it up.
Sujin Pak
Yeah.
Kulap Vilaysak
So, yeah, of course, all of Jenny Han's series are. It's a. You sit down and you get through it. Like, you don't get up in the middle of it. So. Which is why I'm pausing on that just for now, because I want to get through this missing you. Because I know as soon as I open Exo, I got to get through it, and I actually. I want to watch it with Zoe. So we watched season one together, and so she. And she is on the squid game train right now, and I can't get on that train.
Sujin Pak
Yeah, I finished that. That was excellent.
Kulap Vilaysak
And I know there's some of you may be judging, and I take that judge and I fart on is graphic, and all of that's violent. And there are times where I'm like, should I be letting my daughter watch this? But she is. She's Wendy Adams. Is that her? Is that the character?
Sujin Pak
Wednesday. Wednesday. We're not, by the way, not editing that out.
Kulap Vilaysak
The main character in Ozark's name is Wendy. So that's. My brain is still so Wendy Adams. That is my child. She's dark, she's moody, she's goth. She likes it violent. I don't know. She was born this way. She just. She got on a roller coaster at the age of three and just snacked her way through it. Didn't even blink her little Bambi eyes. It was. She just is that gal. Anyway, so she's super into it. So once we get through our own, you know, plates, then we're gonna watch Exo together. Wanted to give a quick shout out to our dear friends at Good Light, doing a collab with them, which I thought was so cute. It's the Kissy Lip Nectar lip balm, and I love it. It's not. I like a lip balm that's thick but not glossy and not goopy. Do you understand?
Sujin Pak
I do. I do.
Kulap Vilaysak
And there's a.
Sujin Pak
There's a.
Kulap Vilaysak
It doesn't seem to be a category that's easy to find. Obsessed with it. So that's what I'm watching, what you're.
Sujin Pak
Putting on your lips and what I'm.
Kulap Vilaysak
Putting on my lips, and then what I'm listening to. So have you heard of this podcast called this Is Actually Happening?
Sujin Pak
No.
Kulap Vilaysak
Okay, listen to this tagline. It's so you.
Sujin Pak
Okay.
Kulap Vilaysak
This Is Actually Happening is a weekly podcast featuring the uncanny, extraordinary, true stories of events that have dramatically altered the lives of ordinary people. For example, a son is shot by his own father. A woman's sister develops multiple personalities. A man wakes up in the morgue. I listened to one where a parachute didn't open.
Sujin Pak
Oh, wow.
Kulap Vilaysak
I listened to another one where a woman spent five years in a Thai prison.
Sujin Pak
Oh, this is this. You're right, I didn't. I've never heard of this. This podcast. This is so up my alley. This is exactly what I. I need this. I need this so badly.
Kulap Vilaysak
So good. It's so good. I go on my long walks and I get just wrapped into people telling the stories of these things that have happened to them. Generally, they're, you know, adult material. And what I'm finding is, is that though they end the ones I've heard on hopeful notes. So I kind of like that it takes you through it. I mean, it's just. It's a documentary for your ears. Oh. And sometimes you just want that. You just want to get into a story and you want to close your eyes and you want to be there. I feel that, like, that's where I'm at. I go through phases where I want to be just, like, stuck in something. Sometimes it's dark, but just something emotional. And that's just kind of what I'm consuming. I'm realizing now that I'm Looking at my list.
Sujin Pak
Well, in that podcast, I mean, it sounds like obviously the person has lived to tell the tale.
Kulap Vilaysak
Yeah.
Sujin Pak
And I just think. I feel like I just don't know what's going to happen. Like, I can't game it out, and I can't control the winds in California. I can't control, you know, who buys what. Cryptocurrency. There's the. You know, I mean, so many things are up for grabs, and it's nice to know that people who've gone through some, like, extraordinary circumstances can, you know, can share what they went through and what they've learned or what. And that they are. They still are.
Kulap Vilaysak
Yeah. I find, you know, you ever play that game, you know, when you're, like, getting to know someone or, you know, you guys are talking about it like it's not a game, but, like, that. Those stories of, like, I shouldn't be here today, like that. You know what I mean? Yes, yes. And it could be, like, little things, little decisions that you make that, like, you had to go through it to get to the other side. It could be big things. But, like, we all have those. The longer you live. The list is just longer of, like, how did I get through that? How did I survive that? How did I. How was I there and ended up here? Yeah, so there's. There's something about that that is very universal. And. Yeah, it's just. I love good storytelling. You know, I love the moth. I love, you know, those old cli like that. I love storytelling. So this is kind of storytelling around this sort of big theme of these things that have changed people's lives. So, yeah, it's fantastically produced. It's so well done. I love it.
Sujin Pak
Can't wait. I cannot wait. So what's this next one?
Kulap Vilaysak
And then I'm reading.
Sujin Pak
This is a book called what A. Oh, I love that. We're like, there's so many add to Q. It's like, there's just. We're getting such a variety.
Kulap Vilaysak
Yeah, I'm gonna give you that. I'm gonna give you. Yeah, I'm gonna give you a grocery cart.
Sujin Pak
I love it.
Kulap Vilaysak
Just give you one thing. Come on, Carters. So I gave you something to watch and listen to, and now I'm giving you something to read. It's called the Other Valley.
Sujin Pak
Okay.
Kulap Vilaysak
And it's by Scott Alexander Howard. So this is the story. Basically, it is. Imagine a, you know, futuristic world or, you know, whatever, and in this valley, there are three towns. And it's the same town, only it's the past, the present and the future versions of that same town. And you cannot obviously go visit other towns because you know that would disrupt the whole thing. And so that's kind of like the world that you're set in. So it's a little bit sci fi, but it's very light. I love a light sci fi. And it's a story of this girl. She's six. She starts off at 16 years old. Something happens and you go through her life and obviously she's gonna go to the other, the other towns. And that's where the drama ensues. And it is just, it's like heart pounding. It's really, really, like I said, it's very light sci fi. So it's really about this, this girl and this relationship she has with this boy and all the kind of things that happen because of these decisions she's made as a, as a young, as a 16 year old girl. And so can she undo some of those mistakes, you know, and yeah, yeah, you know, of the past. So then it affects the future and et cetera. So it's just, it's really good. It's a fast, short read and it's just a beautiful, beautiful novel.
Sujin Pak
Foreign.
Kulap Vilaysak

You can also request a cologuard prescription today@cologuard.com podcast. The Cologuard test is intended to screen adults 45 and older at average risk for colorectal cancer. Let's end with some more add to Q and some joy making variety. I. I just wanted to share what Emmy's favorite and most requested songs are. These are the songs that she demands. Demands. But then when we play it, like, like, man, oh man, like, DNA is a wild thing. It's a wild, wild thing. I said to Scott, I go, I say to Scott, I go, wow. Have you ever met anyone like Emmy? I mean, she's just so unique. He's like, yeah, you. Yeah, it's you. It's you. I'm like, yeah, yeah.
Kulap Vilaysak
Especially when they're really young. Children tend to be one parent or the other like that. I find that to be true physically, personality wise. And Scott didn't make it. I have friends who, I'm like, the joke is, hey, what's it like having Andrew Jr. As a daughter?
Sujin Pak
Yeah, yeah.
Kulap Vilaysak
You know what I mean? Like, I have a friend who's like, I'm like, that's. I'm just looking at your husband's face on a, you know, a little baby girl. Scott didn't make it, but he will. It'll come out. It changes. It changes. But in the beginning, it's always interesting because generally I feel like babies and little kids favor one parent of the or the other in some way.
Sujin Pak
Yeah. She's got his height, complexion. That's it. Yeah. That's about it at this time. At this time. But this girl, like, she moves in grooves, she's singing, she's dancing, and she loves Apathe by Rose and Bruno Mars. Like, loves it. Loves it. Has to listen to it. We have so Many videos of her just grooving to it. Sometimes she mouths, she lip syncs and sometimes she sings it full throated. She's a part of what's happening with the zeitgeist is what I'm trying to say.
Kulap Vilaysak
She's got her finger on the pulse.
Sujin Pak
And because I love Die with a Smile by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars.
Kulap Vilaysak
Favorite song.
Sujin Pak
I just love that song so much.
Kulap Vilaysak
I love that song and I love that it was like a slow burn. Yes. It was out forever. I loved it. And people were like, ew, that's the worst song. And now it's number one.
Sujin Pak
Number one. You know, congrats to Bruno Mars for just his.
Kulap Vilaysak
His resurgence continual. Everything he touches.
Sujin Pak
He's an entertainer. He's an entertainer.
Kulap Vilaysak
He just. But he just knows. Yeah.
Sujin Pak
And another surprising song which has nothing to do with the fact that this song which is so old now has had a resurgence because of TikTok. I mean, she's not on TikTok. Oh yeah, yeah. It's because of TikTok. I don't even know what it is on TikTok, but I know it's popular again because of TikTok, which is Maps by the Yay Yaz. She likes to drum and she. Her daddy got her a guitar for her birthday and so she's just like, that's the perfect song for a kid that likes both those things. And it's just she. So it starts off and it's that guitar solo and then she's like, where's the drums? Here comes the drums. Then the drum. Drums come in. And then it's just really. It's just. It's easy, right? Because it's like, wait. And she does the hand. Wait, they don't love you like I love you wait. Like. And it's so. She's also doing the very. And I know it's cause she's seen me do it. It. But she gets really dramatic. Like she just. She's doing the dramatic moves and it's like just into her marrow. In her marrow. And it is just an absolute delight.
Kulap Vilaysak
Add to cart the yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, every. Every song.
Sujin Pak
It's just truly. I gotta.
Kulap Vilaysak
I gotta introduce. Introduce my kids to that. I can't even believe that hasn't been on the list.
Sujin Pak
I mean. And also with these three songs, like, look at the Asian power here. Like this is.
Kulap Vilaysak
Hey, does it need to be said anymore?
Sujin Pak
I know, I know. We just drip with cool dripping with swagu with just rizz the. Then. Then to just end this amazing Playlist. This amazing playlist that I'm providing for you is Peanut Butter and Jelly Super Simple Songs.
Kulap Vilaysak
I don't even know that song.
Sujin Pak
Oh, you do. Peanut, peanut butter, butter, jelly, jelly. Peanut, Peanut butter and jelly.
Kulap Vilaysak
Oh, God. How many times a day do you have to listen to that?
Sujin Pak
That. It's funny. When Zoe was young, super simple songs. Was that a thing? Was that on your radar? No, to be honest, her favorite thing ever is like the super simple songs Halloween playlist. She loves Halloween.
Kulap Vilaysak
Like it's in her blood.
Sujin Pak
And now I love Halloween now because her birthday's in October and. But that. It's so fun. And she loves Christmas, but I can already tell, like Halloween.
Kulap Vilaysak
She's gonna be a Halloween.
Sujin Pak
Great. Fine. Here we go. We're a magical family. That's fine. That's fine. You know, the magic season starts.
Kulap Vilaysak
Halloween non denominational there at the house.
Sujin Pak
That's right. That's right. But like having her music, her dance around, that is a strategy for joy.
Kulap Vilaysak
Yeah. It's kryptonite.
Sujin Pak
Kryptonite. For bad, bad vibes. Yeah.
Kulap Vilaysak
You can't be alive and not have joy. When there's a child dancing and screaming the. Yeah, yeah. Yes. It just doesn't.
Sujin Pak
I defy. I defy that to you.
Kulap Vilaysak
I challenge and I dare you. As crusty as I am. It just doesn't get better than music and kids.
Sujin Pak
I agree.
Kulap Vilaysak
And it doesn't stop. The songs change. But we were taking these long road trips and what my daughter's listening to in her playlist and my son.
Sujin Pak
What are they? I want to hear. I want to hear some.
Kulap Vilaysak
Well, it's always very easy. It's all K Pop.
Sujin Pak
Great.
Kulap Vilaysak
There's not. And deep Cuts. I'm not talking about Apathe.
Sujin Pak
No.
Kulap Vilaysak
I'm talking about. I mean, they're all in Korean. Like she's won't listen. She doesn't listen to songs. She doesn't consider it K pop unless it's in Korean. So there's that. My child doesn't speak Korean, by the way. Sure. And then Kai's is really. Wait, can I wait, can we take a quick second?
Sujin Pak
Yeah, yeah, please.
Kulap Vilaysak
It was cracking me up. I don't know where he's getting this. He said to me the other day, he's like, mom, I put together a playlist for you. And I was like, oh, okay. It's mom's jams.
Sujin Pak
Oh my God.
Kulap Vilaysak
And he put a picture on it of Mike wearing my LED face mask. And I don't even know. Okay. So I'm just reading off a few of them. This is a few of them.
Sujin Pak
This is awesome.
Kulap Vilaysak
By the way, The Middle by Jimmy Eat World, Cheerleader by Omi. Omi.
Sujin Pak
Yeah, I know that song.
Kulap Vilaysak
This is Summertime Sadness by Lotta Del Rey. Huh? Story of my life. One Direction. Okay, look. Look for the good Jason Mraz. And I just love that he. I don't know where he is listening to this music, but, like, this is, I'm assuming, some of his favorite songs, but I love that this is his.
Sujin Pak
I don't think it is.
Kulap Vilaysak
This is what he.
Sujin Pak
Yeah, these are moment in time. Like, Tiff is like, oh, these are 2015 bangers. Like, no way he's listening to these songs.
Kulap Vilaysak
Yes, he is. He knows all the lyrics to these songs.
Sujin Pak
And he.
Kulap Vilaysak
And. And he put together this list for me, so I. First of all, I don't know these songs.
Sujin Pak
More. I need more.
Kulap Vilaysak
Okay, let me tell you, while your daughter. At this age. Same age, my son. Your daughter's. Was screaming to Apatu. My son was screaming in the backseat to Rolling in the Deep by Adele.
Sujin Pak
What? Mind Blown.
Kulap Vilaysak
We have a video that some would say was viral before we had someone requested to take it down. I think that. I think that the label. It was getting tons of hits on. Mike posted it on Facebook when. When she. He was into this. And he is screaming Adele in the back seat. He has a bottle like, he's so young. He's maybe three years old.
Sujin Pak
Oh, my God.
Kulap Vilaysak
By Radiohead. What? Heaven by Brian Adams. Wrecking Ball. Miley Cyrus. Also Malibu Miley Cyrus. And then. And then it goes straight into sitting on the dock with Otis Redding and a bunch of Beach Boys. And that is my.
Sujin Pak
But it's not Kai's list. It's Mom's jams.
Kulap Vilaysak
But djed by Kai. These are all songs he knows.
Sujin Pak
These are the tea leaves that I'm sifting through, and I'm looking for meaning. And what does he know about you? And what does he think he knows about you?
Kulap Vilaysak
Wait. White Flag. Dido. No Woman, no Cry. Bob Marley. Is he seeing the tea leaves?
Sujin Pak
I mean, because I wanted to bring up Summertime Sadness and White Flag took my breath away. Now White Flag, I went. I will go down with this ship.
Kulap Vilaysak
He's got Weezer on here. I mean, it's just a very. Beatles. Kenny Rogers.
Sujin Pak
Kenny Rogers.
Kulap Vilaysak
What?
Sujin Pak
Kenny Rogers.
Kulap Vilaysak
I don't even. The Gambler. I don't know that song. What is that song? He has this on here for me. And when I tell you, me and Julio, Downtown or Me and Julio. Downtown Again by Paul Simon comes on. Forget it. He's off on a rocket ship.
Sujin Pak
What?
Kulap Vilaysak
What?
Sujin Pak
I don't even know.
Kulap Vilaysak
I don't know where he gets it.
Sujin Pak
But that's.
Kulap Vilaysak
I just was funny.
Sujin Pak
I'm obsessed. I'm obsessed.
Kulap Vilaysak
Should I send this to you so that you can play it at your next Mahjong get together? And people are like, what the fuck is this playlist? Wildflowers by Tom Petty. And you're gonna say, yeah, it's Mom's Jams. That's what. That's what he labeled it. Mom's Jams.
Sujin Pak
First of all, like, I'm also, like, really impressed that he knows that song. Like, there's part of. There's just a lot going on for me that I. I actually wanna. I wanna analyze. Like, ideas are formulating. I. The. He's. He's operating at a level that I wasn't aware of.
Kulap Vilaysak
Yeah. And it's not. Obviously it's not me, so I. For sure it's Mike. You know, whatever. When they're going around together and, you know, Mike, I mean, he's obsessed with music, and so I. I have to assume it's him. Like, I can't. I. I don't know where he's getting this stuff.
Sujin Pak
Oh. I mean, yeah. Like, Scott, music is being played at our house. I want to share another song that she loves because of him. And she always asks for it. It's Mashed Potato. It's like this certain. Like, oh, God, I need to pull it. And then there's also one that's like, ooh, ooh. Come on, Kitty, tell us about the boy from New York City.
Kulap Vilaysak
You know, I mean, you can't mess. You can't. Scott's music repertoire unrivaled.
Sujin Pak
Unrivaled.
Kulap Vilaysak
Yeah. It's gonna be the breath 1950s, you know, underground London.
Sujin Pak
And. And it's also going to be Clay Aiken's entire oeuvre. Like, it's. You can't.
Kulap Vilaysak
Yeah, you can't. Yeah. Pen him in there.
Sujin Pak
Can try. Try. He'll, like, just try.
Kulap Vilaysak
Wow. Wow.
Sujin Pak
What's. So many surprises?
Kulap Vilaysak
What. What a. What a discovery. Yeah. What a discovery episode.
Sujin Pak
Yeah.
Kulap Vilaysak

Add to Cart with Kulap Vilaysack & SuChin Pak: "Lipstick on the Pig" Episode Summary
Release Date: February 11, 2025
In the "Lipstick on the Pig" episode of Add to Cart, hosts Kulap Vilaysak and Sujin Pak navigate the complexities of midlife consumerism with their signature blend of humor and honesty. They explore how to balance emotional and monetary investments in everyday life, especially amidst societal pressures like Valentine's Day. The episode delves into strategies for maintaining coziness at home, simplifying cooking and hosting, and sharing personal interests in entertainment and reading.
The episode kicks off with a candid discussion about the current state of Valentine's Day. Both hosts express a sense of weariness towards the holiday's commercialization and the lingering emotional baggage from the previous year.
Kulap Vilaysak opens with a relatable sentiment:
"Nobody's in the mood for this. Nobody's in the mood for Valentine's Day."
(02:17)
Sujin Pak echoes the sentiment, highlighting the lack of enthusiasm:
"No, no. We're not doing it. Don't worry."
(05:04)
They liken their attempts to make Valentine's Day special to "putting lipstick on a pig," suggesting that superficial decorations don't address underlying feelings.
Moving beyond holiday woes, Kulap and Sujin delve into broader midlife strategies. They critique traditional New Year's resolutions, which often feel burdensome and unenjoyable, and propose a shift towards attainable and enjoyable "fantasies."
Sujin Pak introduces the concept:
"Instead of resolutions, let's commit to learning a new language... that's a resolution you can reach today."
(19:25)
Kulap Vilaysak playfully refers to midlife challenges as a "bullet train" towards 50, emphasizing the need for enjoyable and realistic goals:
"It's the Bullet train. I am on that bullet train. Having a blast, by the way."
(06:54)
This approach fosters a positive outlook, focusing on what brings joy rather than what feels obligatory.
A significant portion of the conversation centers around making cooking and hosting easier to maintain a cozy home environment amidst busy schedules.
Sujin Pak shares her experience with Cook Unity, praising its convenience and variety:
"You can categorize by chef. And then you don't have to cook."
(09:04)
Kulap Vilaysak reciprocates by expressing her renewed interest in easy meal services:
"I gotta get back on this. Cause I loved it."
(08:32)

The hosts exchange recommendations for resources that aid in easy cooking and hosting.
Kulap Vilaysak highlights a favorite cookbook:
"It's so easy. It's like girl eating at its highest."
(11:11)
Sujin Pak emphasizes the importance of community through hosting:
"Sunday suppers... so people just have big pots and come and go."
(12:25)
They envision creating informal, family-style dinners where everyone contributes, fostering a sense of community without the stress of elaborate preparations.
Kulap and Sujin share their current entertainment obsessions, offering recommendations to listeners.

"It's like a documentary for your ears."
(26:50)
The hosts discuss their current reads, highlighting books that align with their interests in storytelling and personal growth.
"It's really good. It's a fast, short read and it's just a beautiful, beautiful novel."
(30:42)
This light sci-fi novel explores themes of time and relationships, resonating with their focus on manageable and enjoyable literary pursuits.
Music plays a pivotal role in the hosts' lives, serving as a source of joy and connection within their families.
