We left people last week on a cliffhanger. She cool op entered the world of auction items and it came out pretty strong. But you did hint that in the next episode, which is this episode, that you were gonna look a little askew, if you will. Your wig wasn't gonna be on straight for this ep, Am I correct? Yes.

[Kulat Vilaisak]

And I. These are sometimes I Enter fugue states and you such and pocket, I will rely on you and your experience in investigative reporting as to why. As to why, why, why have I done this, you know? And I will answer to my best abilities. But the answers, they're not gonna. They're really not gonna make a lot of sense.

No, it's ephemeral. It's a feeling. It's an in the moment thing that happened. It's a confluence of trauma, of our age, of all the things that make up who we are that get us to make some of these decisions in our life that don't make sense to anyone else.

Okay, go ahead. So the site that I am auctioning at is called rlsphere. And it's essentially they're like a liquidation firm, businesses that are going out of business or wardrobe houses for the many studios that are nearby. They may need to get rid of a bunch of wardrobe, make room for other stuff. I've gotten into this maybe for at least a year, you know, and there have been many things that I've bid on and I thank to God I didn't win. Like, my first thing that I bid on was like, like a really, really large painting of the Golden Girls. Like, where was that gonna go?

Cool up.

Like, it was huge, Huge. You could. I kind of go, okay, that's kind of funny. Like, you put it in your office or like in the bathroom. If it was like an 8 by 10, this was like. This was a method. Very big canvas. And thank God. And I probably bid on that like twice. It's just these things, you know, like, there's just what's happening, what's going on in the moment. Right, right, right in the moment. Okay, so this is the auction I'm going to talk about right now. Major motion picture studio costume wardrobe department sale.

Okay. Love it.

And so things that you need to know about me before I describe how I bid in one two sacks of brooches. Two sacks. Okay. Of costume. It's a sort of vintage and miscellaneous costume brooches. Is that when I'm on Etsy, I am looking for brooches. You know that, Sue.

Oh, my God. It's probably the number one category that I have.

I'm looking at brooches. I'm seeing what's available because I'm looking at this coot.

You've shown me a picture of what you bid on, and I'm not seeing crazy. So maybe I'm not the right person to. To judge. Continue.

Okay, so look, I bid on just random custom brooches and I won for two. Two. Two lots. So two. Two sacks. That's what I received. Two sacks that were $137. 50.

Wait, for both sacks?

No, each sack.

Okay, got it.

But still each sack.

But each Sack. There's like 30 to 50 brooches in each sack.

Easily, easily, easily. But yeah, what am I doing? But when I go all the way up to Culver City, that's in la Miles. Not a lot in LA time in quite a long time. Especially when I can't find the entrance and I have to go around twice to get there, and I find myself there and I'm given two sacks of brooches. And then cut to later when I'm laying out said brooches. And there's a lot of trash. There's a lot of trash. At least half, I think, are trash. And then here's a story that I told myself is that I'm gonna do a craft project with some on a lays. I'm gonna do some sort of crafting project, like, I'm gonna make for Christmas. I'm gonna make a brooch wreath with the discards. That's never going to happen. But as I lay out all of these many brooches, and there are some that I like, I was just like, I don't think this was worth it. Like, as I bought it, I was like, well, well, I mean, it would make sense if, like, I had, like, a thrift shop or like a Etsy shop myself, and then I could turn around.

I guess we're setting up an Etsy shop.

[Kulat Vilaisak]

What? No, I'm not. I'm never going to do that. I'm never gonna do that. I don't want to deal with shipping.

I know she's got two stacks of brooches.

So I did take the time and I will show the photos and I divided them and I looked at them and I did a pass of things that I would keep or gift, which is this sack.

That's a lot.

And then. Which I have will craft with. Yeah, this sack. And I mean, it's a lot. It's a lot.

Okay. And why did I do that?

Sue, can you actually, this is why.

This is why. And because I've done this and everyone listening has done this at some point is what you've done is you've bought a dream. And the dream could be, I'm a baker now. I can bake that. That seems pretty easy. This person on this video makes it look so easy. I'm a DIY crafter. I'M I sure I could. Poshmark. These are dreams, and what you've bought is a dream. And God forbid that in this time that we should tap into the dreamer in all of us every once in a while. And you tapped into that. You tapped into this version, this whimsy of a DIY crafter, something cute coming

out of somebody who owns a shop. And I, in my head was like, I'm competing against.

Yeah, you're competing against someone who. Shop owners. Real people who need to put milk and butter on the table.

That's right. And I. And you and I.

I am a. A wolf in sheep's clothing.

It's look, part of me is like, there. There is enough brooches that I will wear that make one of the sacks worth it. And a lot of my friends are going to be receiving brooches. Your birthday is coming up. You don't think you're going to get at least two to three brooches, by the way.

Receiving them with joy. Receiving them with joy.

But there was just this moment as I sat on the ground and I surveyed all of these brooches and, well,

that's the part of, you know, you buy into a dream and then you have to deal with the reality of what. What life did is. Which is not a dream.

Okay. Okay. I'm now seeing the photo of what's coming. And I see that the brooches were what we call an amuse bouche. That was like, I don't know. I could see myself doing that. Here is where I love you and I leave you.

This is where, much like that famous poem, where the roads diverge.

That's right. Three kisses. Bisou, Bisou. I will see you at the next stop. This is where you have completely lost me. Please tell the audience what you bid on. And would you bid on. And I assume you had to get your ass to wherever to pick these up.

Well, okay, so I bid on this. And I. And I lost it. And I'm kind of. Which is crazy about this one.

Possibly, possibly. But then what did I win? I won. What did I win?

Here's what's so sad about the brooches. Now, these brooches were mindful purchases where I like, for weeks. I was like, I'm gonna. This is cool. These are brooches. And it was mindful.

And I was like, this is thinking about it.

I thought about it. Now, as this auction was winding down, I just decided to do a last minute scan of things that I could possibly get. So what? I won? What I'm about to tell you I won.

So she lost the gingerbread full size human size costume at the last minute. Okay. Some other crazy, crazy person got that?

Yes. These two things are their impulse purchases, I would say.

I certainly hope so, because if this has been your Roman Empire, then I. I would be concerned. You won.

Please do. Because my daughter's favorite.

My daughter's favorite animals are elephants and pink pigs.

But even she likes those books. But she also, like, if we're at the zoo or these experiences, this is what she likes. Okay. So that could be in part where this insanity was seeded. I'm not saying it's her fault. I'm just saying I'm giving you context.

Now, the two people that have seen it had the very same reaction. And their reaction was, wow, have you lost your mind? They simply. It is in it no malice. It is almost just why? Why? And then when I sort of dance and explain. Emmy, Emmy likes pink pigs. They're all both like, well, I hope she likes them for a while.

But, like, what were you thinking? You were going to like, is this for her birthday?

[Kulat Vilaisak]

That's an idea. She goes crazy for mascots and for, like, if we're character, like, Disney characters that you can take pictures with. Like, she goes nuts for that. So, yeah, that's also in my.

It's just also like, this. This pig is not like a. It's not a pig. Okay, so the gingerbread. You're like, the gingerbread man can. Or it's Christmas, or there's. There's like a cultural reference to it. This pig is. I'm not sure, like, where this pig is from. Like, it could be a pig from, like, will blow your house down. But the pig is wearing brown velour basketball shorts and green velour basketball shoes. I feel that it's a teen.

It's a teen. It's a teen pig. No shirt.

I'm like. And I'm having to push this, like, cart to my car with. With this. This, like, this head. This head and two sacks of garbage. Brooches. Like, what?

Yeah, it's like that. Except this is a pig costume.

It really, like, makes the top nudity clear. Where there was no shorts, then you could just kind of go, it's just a smooth, androgynous pig. Yeah.

And then it's as if it never happened. Like, it. And for me, it has to happen very quickly. Like, I can't even bring it into the house.

So I have been on the past three months. I've been now to Palm Springs three times, and I have not been to Palm Springs in many years. I used to love going there for some reason.

It happened to be. And I have fallen in love with the City again. Now the thought of Palm Springs in July for most people is a no go. In fact, half the city is closed. It's so hot.

[Kulat Vilaisak]

We're triple digits.

Yeah, I, and, and, and I get that. And yet that is also a version of Palm Springs that I love. I don't like going to Palm Springs. And it's cold to me. Palm Springs, you should fry an egg on a sidewalk. The hot desert wind should dry your eyes out. It should not be safe to go out before noon. I like dipping into that, into weather. You know, being from California in, you know, this is our California city.

[Kulat Vilaisak]

Yes. You're going skiing.

That's right.

In the winter. And you can go to Palm Springs.

[Sujin Pak]

Yeah. In the desert in the summer. Now what I was like, oh, I've been here now three times. I thought I would just give you a two, three day max itinerary. And this is an itinerary for non hikers. It is itinerary potentially for families. And it is an itinerary for lazy people who like to drink matcha and sit in bodies of water.

Yeah. So the first thing you're going to do is you're going to get in your car and you're going to put in your navigation system outlets.

And it's lovely if you have that budget to shop. And it's worth it. And you're gonna, you know, start off early, so your room isn't ready. So that's where you go first. A quick hour or two there, tops. And then you stay at the Drift Hotel. You're gonna love this hotel.

Yes, it is a newish hotel. It is beautifully designed forward. It's very, like, desert chic. They're all apartments with full kitchens.

And they're all bedrooms. So you can get one bedroom, two bedrooms, up to four bedrooms, really.

I think there's also one in Santa

Barbara too, but it's not the same. They don't have, like, a kitchen.

Like, the Drift in Palm Springs is. It's so great. And it's like one of those hotels where, like, you get a text and then they're like, this is the code to your room. If you needed someone, I think you could call or text. There isn't necessarily a lobby. There's a really nice restaurant there that's open for dinner, but other than that, it's like, pretty much like they just leave you alone. And it's a gorgeous hotel.

They have a little pool.

Yeah.

[Kulat Vilaisak]

I'm looking at the site.

The pool looks fantastic.

This is great for families. This is great for a girls trip.

You're not gonna get, like Four Seasons, poolside lobster, but you're gonna get a gorgeous four bedroom, you know, hotel room.

They're saying it's equal parts home and hotel, and that's what it looks like.

Yeah. So that's the place that we stay whenever we go.

[Kulat Vilaisak]

Okay. This is a find. I think it's great. Mm.

And, like, you know, for us, and especially for you, because it's quite a drive for me. But for you, you know, it can be a weekend, you know, and you're there and you're staying at this nice hotel. Sure, it's hot, but then you're in the water most of the time.

[Kulat Vilaisak]

Yeah.

[Sujin Pak]

And then, you know, with little kids, like, it's not like you. You have to be out that much. So anyway, so the Drift Hotel is fantastic. And then I'm. I'll put these links down. These are the. There's so many great restaurants. These are the three restaurants that I eat at all the time. There's a tiny hole in the wall in a strip mall called Palm Greens Cafe that's just got really healthy salads. And, you know, if you're a vegan or vegetarian, they have tons of that. They have Sherman's Deli, which, where I'm coming from in Santa Barbara, there's not a Jewish deli for miles, which is bizarre to me. So I can get my Jewish deli New York style fixed. And then there's a fantastic sort of Asian fusion restaurant called Rooster and the Pig. And the rooster and the pig is. You can walk there from the Drift Hotel. So I will put those links up so you can have access to that. And then they've got this new like matcha coffee shop called Mintosa.

Okay.

And outside of Japan, it is hands down the best matcha I've ever had, which is bizarre. In the middle of Palm Springs. It's a very strange thing to say. And then the best thing is, is this coffee shop is attached to this place called the Mojave Flea Trading Post, which is a giant warehouse, multi brand indie, a lot of it indie.

I'm like shopping Goosebumps.

[Sujin Pak]

Gorgeous shopping. And they've got everything from like vintage in there to like, I don't even know, like little brands to handmade. It also in there is like this crazy Japanese, what do you call it, like, stationary section. It's just like, what? Very well curated. Wow. So you get your matcha, you shop around and then if you want to do vintage, obviously Palm Springs is known for that. So I'm only going to give you one recommendation that I love. And it's this place called Melody Note Vintage. And she's just like an institution there. It's a small shop, but the prices are super reasonable and. And she's a great resource. So like the last time we were there she. We were shopping and we were like, oh, where, where should we go next? And she was like, I'm going to give you the tea. There's a place down the road, they're retiring. And so the entire place is 60% off at this point. And so you bet your bottom dollar we scooted on over there. I bought two gorgeous pieces of art. I know, Framed.

God, these are. I mean, this is, this is. Oh, God. This is you being in the foot of a mountain in Italy. This is me getting stools from an auction site. It's just like when things. I'm really sorry that businesses close, but when you're at the right place at the right time, it feels so nice.

[Sujin Pak]

There was one piece of art I was like, you know, because I knew I was coming back and I just didn't quite make it there because they're all different trips I'm taking, which was kind of cool. I took a girlfriend trip. We did a lot of shopping. I took a mic trip. We did no shopping. And then by the time this comes out, I will have taken a kids trip and I'll tell you about that. So then When Mike and I went, he's all about the mineral soaks. Have you done mineral soaks there? Like, there's, like, Two Bunch Palms, which is a really nice place. Like, there's. There's a lot of places. And so we were just doing day passes, and so I've stayed at Two Bunch Palms, and it's fantastic. But they were all booked for day passes, and so we went to a few. This was the one during the trip that I liked the most, but there could be others. But this was a fantastic one. It's called Azure Palm Springs Resort, and it's $70 for the day pass. And it has, like, big grounds, and so you can get, like, little individual soaking tubs for you and a friend, and that probably fit comfortably. Three to four, tops, people, you know, and then they've got the big pool in the middle, and then they've got all these different hot soaks. And then they've got a Himalayan salt room. They have a fantastic restaurant on site, a cafe, Got great lunch there. Like, these are all things that, like, I wanted because we went to a place that was really nice but didn't have a restaurant. And so, like, halfway through, I was like, I gotta leave. I'm starving. So this one was the one I would recommend. But again, if you have the chance to go to Twentynine Palms, that's also fantastic. But anyway, so that's a great thing to do if you're just an adults only. And the mineral tubs, I mean, we are big mineral soakers. So, like, your skin just feels amazing. Like, it's so healing. It's just. It's. I. I love it. I mean, I'm Korean. This is. It was just a giant.

So this is why people gym.

Korean. Yeah. Yeah. That's what Mike was like. So we went to the first place, which was nice. And then way out, he was like, tomorrow, we're going. Let's try another spot. And he went in and did the tour. He came out, he was like, jim. Jim Bong.

So I was like, okay, we'll come here tomorrow. And it was great. Now, the best discovery with the kids. So if you have an active kid and it's 110 degrees, you know, Palm Springs doesn't sound fun, but it does if you're at the surf club.

I didn't know that there was a surf club.

I know, I know. I'm like, but you'll be in Hawaii, not surfing. Is that worse? I don't know. So this is called the Surf Club in Palm Springs. And it. Let me tell you, if you've been to, like, Great Wolf. Don't, don't. I'm telling you, you would hate it. But it's like most water slide places that you take your kids to. It's pretty disgusting, but you just, like, do it because your kids are like, they are in heaven. They just love it so much. This place. Whoever designed it. Thank you. Has to be a parent. It is a good, gorgeously chic designed water slide park. It has a lazy river. It has this very beautiful restaurant that overlooks everything. So you could just be having a cocktail or a salad and then watching your kids play. There's a lazy river that goes around. There's water slides, and then they have a wave machine where you can surf. This is so great, Sue.

Like this. This is such a great travel. Because the only thing that you've brought up to me that I was aware of was Sherman's Deli, because it's pretty famous. You know, I've had. I've had brunch there, but everything else is, like, brand new.

[Sujin Pak]

Yeah, no, I'm.

I don't know. I mean, yeah. And I've been. I can't tell you how many times I've been to Palm Springs.

[Sujin Pak]

And no, I know I haven't been there in years. I have. I haven't been before this. I hadn't been in years. I went with my friend Diana and I was like, okay. I guess the. You know, because Mike and I had a few days while the kids were in Hawaii, and we're like, where should we go? And he wanted to be out in the desert and do mineral springs. I was like, palm Springs. So then we did that. That version of it. Then we heard. I saw this surf thing and we went. Mike and I went just to go check it out. And I was like, this is gorgeous. I think they're four years open, but it feels like they opened yesterday. Brand new facilities, spanking clean. And. And like, how many water slide park things, hotels have we been in where I'm like, again, you're like, let's just pretend.

[Kulat Vilaisak]

Oh, yeah.

[Sujin Pak]

Like raising waters of the places. No, this is like five star hotel level. You know, facilities, like, everything is clean.

[Kulat Vilaisak]

I mean, and it's. I don't think I've ever seen a Surfing waveform pool before? No, I'm trying to think. I mean, I'm like, of course it exists.

[Sujin Pak]

No, it exists, but very rare. It's not common. Yeah, you can book to your level. They even, by the way, for 20 bucks, you can just boogie board.

[Kulat Vilaisak]

That's so crazy.

[Sujin Pak]

And then on top of it, we did a instructor because, I mean, my kids surf, so it's kind of like I was a friend of mine who has like a baseball kid was like, oh, it's like batting cages. Like you have to get an instructor because like, you're never going to catch that many waves in an hour and have someone really correct your technique. So if you have a surfer or you ever wanted to surf, they. That's all available. I'm just saying that, like, if it's a hundred ten degree boiling hot, but it's dry heat and you're in water, you don't notice it.

No.

As you would think. Springs to me, that's, to me, that's what I'm saying. To me, I'm a summer Palm Springs gal now. The downside is, but to me it's an upside. Is, is the, the city's empty because it's their low season. Well, that's perfect for the city is closed. So for me, like when we went to the, the surf club, there were maybe five families there.

Wow.

And the entire facility.

That's nice.

What I'm saying is don't put it out of reach. Like, don't be intimidated by the heat. There's just so much more to do there. I mean, it just obviously it's, you know, people keep opening new stuff, but I just was thinking about you and I was like, this is it May, maybe like mid July is too hot for Emmy, but like a May, a June, like, it's gorgeous morning time is, is chill and, and you know what's really fun is like, what I love about the desert is that. Or just somewhere, anywhere hot. It's like after dinner you're like, go swimming. And the kids are like, What? Yeah, it's 9 o'.

You're like, yeah, let's go swimming. It's 100 degrees out. I don't know. There's just. To me, it's like dipping into extreme weather like that. It's fun.

Even if it's like, you're not, like I said, you're not hiking in this weather. No, no, no, you're not.

If we have room after all the pig slides. And I need two posts and we need all the pig slides and the video of the head. Because you can't really get the full scope of it.

You really can't? No, I certainly didn't till I got it and was just, just, you know, like, I know what you did last summer. You know what I mean? I was like looking at it like there's cause and effect. These were my actions.

This is how I started to get into. And pretty unsuccessfully, but I'm still doing it and buying it. Clothing dye, you know, you like, you get something at a vintage shop. I do a lot of vintage shopping online now. And you get it and you're like, huh, that color is not anything I can work with. Guess what? Dye it and have you have it. Okay, I have, I have. I've dyed it. Because what I will the fantasy I have is white shirt, butter yellow pants. You know what I'm talking about? Just like an easy breezy mom that doesn't have olive oil, avocado oil stains all over her and is sometimes tracking urine. It's like a linen pant, light colored pant. Like a poplin shirt that's not gonna get avocado.

Helps with the urine covering. So that's good that you still.

And so then I'll get it. And I'm like, I'm never going to wear this. And so I bought like a set that's like a crisp white poplin, like kind of pajama Y, but like you could wear out. And it had like red piping. And I said, absolutely not. And so then I dyed it and it's cute. It's fine.

Okay, I'm gonna need the photo. I need the photo.

Well, I got an indigo dye, obviously. And so then, and then I bought. Okay. So while I was in Palm Springs, I went to a vintage shop and I bought a pair and I was like, oh, yeah. I mean, of course. And they were just like the brightest, tealiest turquoise pant.

Okay. No, how do you dye that though? It's so dark.

[Sujin Pak]

I don't know. So I bought more indigo dye and I'll let you know. But by the way, the indigo dye thing, I mean, it's fine. Again, you and I, like, we have dye of being like DIYers. And so I've seen all the videos. I've been there. And I'm like, it's never it's never easy.

Oh, you always have to do it multiple times.

And there's dye everywhere on every day.

I mean, this is when you were talking last episode about manic panic.

It is everywhere. And like it's a multi step process, but you know, again, the alternative is to live with the shame. And do you know what that is sometimes called in psychology? It's called the ego death. And I'm not interested in dying. I'm interested in living. And so then I buy the Indigo fucking rit dye and I try to undo the mistake that I made in the heat of the moment thinking I was someone I was not.
