Just about our entire lives we've been trained to equate busy with important hustle with success and being tired with being worthy. But what if I told you that sometimes the most productive thing you can do is pause? That doesn't mean to quit. That doesn't mean to disappear, just to pause, to take a beat. If you're constantly moving, constantly creating, constantly showing up for everybody else, when do you have time to actually hear yourself, to check in with what you need and not just what's expected of you? I heard someone ask the question, what's the reward for hard work? And the answer was more hard work. And I don't know who needs to hear this. But that cannot be the whole story. At some point, you've got to decide that you're not just working to prove something or to survive. You're also allowed to just be. To breathe, to let the work be the pause. Because if you don't slow down, life will eventually find a way to slow down for you. Few things are as powerful. What is going on, Beautiful people. You are listening to the Affirmations for Black Girls podcast, where we focus on personal growth and cultivating a healthy relationship with ourselves. I am your host, Tyra, the creative actress, content creator, and mental health enthusiast. And y' all, I'll be the first to say I need to take a break. I think we all deserve a break from time to time, and summer is the perfect time to start leaning into that. Summer starts in four days, and throughout the summer, many podcasts typically go on hiatus. But I'm gonna say this right now, I'm not about to leave y' all high and dry. I will be incorporating breaks, moving each month. I'll be incorporating a break each month, moving forward through the summertime, just to give myself a little breathing room. Now, we can talk about that a little bit more at the end of the episode, but what I'm trying to say through this is not everything has to be a hustle. Not every moment of your life has to be a grind. And sometimes the best thing we can do for ourselves, no matter where we're at in our journey, is step back, take a breath, and remember that rest is not a reward, it is our right. Now, before we dive into the meat of this episode, pressing pause and learning the art of slowing down so we can speed up in other areas of our lives. We have to jump into our affirmation of the week. So. So this week's affirmation is I choose peace over pressure and presence over perfection. Let's go ahead and drop in, you guys. I choose peace over pressure and presence over perfection. I choose peace over pressure and presence over perfection. I choose peace over pressure and presence over perfection. I choose peace over pressure and presence over perfection. What are some of the pressures in your day to day life and how can you choose peace over them? I choose peace over pressure and presence over perfection. Let's go ahead and say it one last time together and truly think about what it means to choose peace, what it means to choose presence, to choose living in the moment. I choose peace over pressure and presence over perfection. Y' all, I love this affirmation because there are times where we have all chosen pressure over Our peace and perfection over us being present in the moment. And while sometimes that is necessary, we need to know the difference between when it is and when it is not. But I like to think of this affirmation and this sentiment of choosing peace over pressure and choosing our presence over perfection. I like to think of it like cooking a pot of gumbo. Y' all know I'm a chef, and I was so excited to be able to tie in some food allegory here. So you know how when you cook gumbo or when you're making a pot of gumbo or even a soup, for those of y' all who have never made gumbo or have never had gumbo before, a soup, like a. A really hearty soup, you can't just throw everything into the pot at the same time and expect it to be good to go in 15 minutes. It needs time for gumbo. You got to let that roux get deep and dark, and that take, like, at least 30 minutes to do. You have to let that flavor come together low and slow, like my daddy be saying. And if you rush it, you gonna taste it, and you're not gonna taste it in a good way. Moving too fast can ruin the whole thing. But when you let the gumbo or the soup simmer, you give it time. You let the. You let the flavors settle in. You let the flavors marinate together. It gets better. And that's kind of how our lives work, too. You can't expect to be your best, fullest self when you're constantly rushing from one thing to the next, burning through your energy like a high heat, sometimes stepping back, allowing the flavors to marinate, and even just doing that for a beat of time is what allows everything else to settle in place, to deepen, to actually get good. Right? And today we're talking about what it looks like to simber in life, just like some gumbo. Let me say this very candidly. Sometimes I feel like people don't really understand what the word rest means. And I say this from personal experience with my family and me, because I, you know, grew up with them. But rest is not a luxury. It is a necessity. It is a soul need. We need to rest. It is imperative for us to rest. And especially in our community, it has been instilled in us that taking a break is lazy. Yes, all the way back from slavery times, we have been viewed as lazy ever since we stopped working for free. Okay? And we not about to even dive too deep into that today, y' all. But just know that I can. But Just know that rest is essential to refreshing our souls. And we were brought up. Or brought up. That's the wrong word. We were. It was instilled in us from way back when that taking breaks is not good for us. Taking breaks are. We should feel guilty about taking breaks and all of that stuff. But you ever get to a point where in life today you feel like you're doing everything and nothing at the same time? Like you've been productive? Sure, the to do lists have been have boxes checked, the calendar's full, your days are booked. But on the inside, you feel fried, died, and laid to the side. That is burnout, y' all. And the first time I ever experienced burnout, and I. I've talked about this a couple of times on the podcast, but the first time I ever experienced burnout was when I was in culinary school. And I hit that wall so hard, I was so burnt out. So I remember I had gotten a year through culinary school, and during this time, I was going to school four to five days a week. I was commuting all the way to Philly, which was about, I would say, like an hour commute, give or take, through everything, going to school four to five days a week, then coming home and working at Red Lobster so I can have enough money to pay my rent, and also baking cakes on the side so I could have spending money. And I remember it was January, February, somewhere around there, which means I had been in culinary school for almost a year, or a fur a year, and we had, like, a snow day and school was canceled, and I decided to, like, sleep in for, like, 30 minutes. And I woke up, and I had never in my life felt so tired, and it was such a weird feeling to me. But I ended up calling out of work, and I didn't even call out of work on time. I called out of work late, and I sat in my bed with this very weird feeling of just extreme and exhaustion and coming out of that eventually. I didn't know at the time that it was burnout, but after I learned what burnout was, I immediately went back to that moment in my life and was like, oh, wow, I was burnt out. And it didn't. It took me until I moved out to LA to realize that that's actually what that was. But to give y' all a timeline, after I graduated from culinary school, I moved out to LA six months later, eight months later, and I did not start baking again for five years. And baking is what I was a culinary school for. I'm a pastry chef. That is how deep I had pushed past my limits and did not care how Tyra was feeling because I had boxes to check. Now, burnout can look like a lot of things. It can look like brain fog, irritability, procrastination, even just feeling numb or deeply, deeply tired. But it's not always I'm tired. Sometimes it's I don't feel like me anymore. And that's a sign. A red flag waving right in your face, asking when is the last time you rested without guilt? We don't talk about soul rest enough. Not just sleeping, but the rest that feeds you, that quiets you, that brings you back home to yourself. Because no matter how much we want to show up in the world, we can't do it well if we're constantly running on empty. And so many of us run on empty day in and day out. So what does soul rest look like? Sometimes it's quiet, like turning off the tv, silencing the group chat, and just being still. I learned that I can get very overstimulated very quickly from things like this, especially electronics. My TV be off. All the group chats is on mute. And if I can leave the group chat, I leave it and I say, hey, don't add me to this. If you need me, just text me, give me a quick call. I can't do the group chats no more. Sometimes soul rest looks creative, like journaling, just to get your thoughts out of your head. Doing brain dumps. I've told my mama about brain dumps so many times because she's expressed to me that she has been feeling brain fog or just clogged and experiencing things that I know to be attributed to burnout. So I've told her about brain dumping. That is one of the greatest things that as a creative person, I have done to get all of those thoughts out of my head that don't need to live there on a daily. On a daily basis. It can also look like baking something for me. Baking something that's not just for content, just baking it because you want to. Sometimes soul rest is choosing a slower pace for your day, moving like you've got time even if your schedule says otherwise. It could look like going for a walk without your phone. Amen. Or at least having your phone if you, you know, for safety reasons. But putting it on, do not disturb. Eating lunch outside. Let letting someone else take care of you for once. It's not about performing peace. It's about actually creating it for yourself. Giving yourself space to breathe, to feel, and to exist. Without needing to explain why. Because the truth is, y' all, you don't have to earn rest. You just have to be ready to receive it. Foreign. We've been fed this lie that the more we grind, the more we get. And especially those of us who live in America, because I know we have some listeners that are not from the usa, especially us that live here. Because that's all I can really speak to. Experience wise, whether consciously or subconsciously, we end up living in that belief. But like I said, at the top of the episode, I heard someone say, what is the reward? Or ask, what is the reward for hard work? And the answer was, more hard work. And that hit me, y' all, because, let's be real, I am tired. And I know I'm not the only one. There's this idea that if you just push a little harder, you will finally arrive somewhere, some magical place where the to do list is done and you can finally exhale. But that place, that place does not exist if you don't make space for it. Because somewhere along the way, we stop seeing rest as a part of the process. We started seeing it as a luxury, as a reward, something that you earn instead of something that you need to get you to point B, point C. But rest is essential. It's not a pause in your purpose. It is a part of how you live it out. That's where the idea of a reset comes in. We've talked about resets before. By definition, to reset means to set again or differently. It's not about stopping completely. It's about realignment, realigning yourself with what you need. It's about giving yourself permission to step away long enough to return stronger, clearer, and more grounded in whatever it is you do. And here's the truth. Doing less can actually help you achieve more. When your mind is cluttered, your ideas get cloudy, when your spirit is worn out, everything feels like a chore. Pausing creates space. And in that space, that is where your inspiration can live. And it's very funny. As I was writing this, I was just thinking, some of my best ideas have come to me in moments when I wasn't trying to create. Like when I be folding clothes, or when I'm in the shower, or if I'm on a walk with a friend, or when I'm doing nothing in particular during, like, a slow, quiet morning. I know for a fact at this point that that is when I am the most creative. That is when my ideas just fly out of me. Because those are the moments when you were pouring back into yourself. And that's not laziness, that's clarity. Arriving breaks and pauses are not detours. They are, let me give you an example. They are the breath between the bars of music. It is the pause that gives rhythm to everything else in your life. And I'm actually headed home to Louisiana for two weeks. As I said, your girl is tired. I'm headed home not to work, not to grind, just to be. To let my people, my family take care of me. To eat food that I didn't have to cook. To be in a place where time moves slower. To sit on the porch with my grandparents and listen to the cicadas chirp and wave at cars as they roll past at 25 mph with no place to be other than right where I am. No to do list. Nothing. True slow living. And honestly, since I'm from the south, maybe I need that slowness a little bit more than other people do. But I'm just so excited because I'm going home not for content batching, but not just do one more thing. Just to rest and to reset. Slowing down, to be poured into instead of constantly pouring out. And I need that y' all. And if I'm being honest, I don't think I realized how badly I needed it until I started or not even started until I was presented with the idea that I could take a trip to the South. And it's like my body knew before my brain actually caught up. Because y' all, there have been a lot of tear filled nights lately. I will not lie, I won't get into detail about it, but I do know that it's coming from a place of exhaustion and just needing to get away from the fast paced life of Los Angeles for a while. And I know we talk about rest all the time, but this that I am talking about with y' all today is more than just going to be early. This is about resetting. Literally setting again, getting back into alignment. Not to be productive, not to come back with a thousand ideas, but because the version of me who is well rested shows up in a way that's more me. I'm more thoughtful, I'm more creative, I can hear myself think. Because when you come back from that kind of reset, you don't just show up, baby. You shine with your ideas, with energy and with a full tank. Amen. And I think that's the real reward. Not more hustle, but more wholeness for me. More Tyra. So yeah y' all, I'm going home to Louisiana for two weeks to slow all the way down. I don't have no plans. I'm just going to eat, to sleep and to be still and do whatever with family that pops up for the day. And I'm going and I'm not gonna feel bad about it. And I want y' all to think about what that could look like for you too. Not necessarily a full on vacation if that's not doable for you, but even little things. Like I said, a walk, a long walk with your phone on, do not disturb, taking a lunch break without multitasking, saying no just because you're tired and letting that be reason enough. Because doing less sometimes is exactly the thing that brings you back to yourself. And it's not about falling behind, it's about catching your breath. Because when you return from rest and a reset, you bring your full self with you. Your ideas, your energy, clarity and creativity all included, y' all. Do you remember back in the day when stretching $20 could carry you through the weekend? Yeah baby, that ain't the world we're living in anymore and I 100 miss it. Okay, y' all, so I have a confession to make. As the treasurer for the Itty Bitty Titty Committee, I want to let y' all know that I gave up on regular bras a long time ago because they were always so uncomfortable. Either the straps would dig in or the cups would have that weird gap that really got on my nerves. Now, while I said I do have a smaller chest and bad bralettes aren't exempt from this criticism either, I just always wanted something that felt good on my body. Something that worked for me instead of against me. Amen. Now, I'm pretty sure I wanted to last people to try skims. But baby, why didn't y' all tell me that the scoop bralette from the Fits Everybody collection was so freaking good. I don't think I ever experienced fabric like this. It's buttery soft and it's smoothing. It's like melt into your skin soft, but it still provides that support and that secure feeling without digging or pinching or weird gapping. Okay. And there are also no weirdly placed seams. And y' all know what I'm talking about. You know that over the nipple seam that pokes through your shirt, especially if you got a small chest. I absolutely hate that. But y' all, I love this bralette. It's lightweight and it moves with me, which means I can go all day without even thinking about it. And I got it in two colors and I wear them under everything. Now listen, this part is important. Let me be real for a second. Most of us as I know, can't just hop on a flight and fly home for two weeks every time we're feeling off. Some of us even still live at home, so we don't even have that built in escape. But even when life gets busy, that doesn't mean you cannot take a break. We really have to retrain our minds to get out of that mindset that we cannot take a break. It is imperative and I feel so strongly about this y' all, I really do. But you don't need a plane ticket or even a PTO request to slow down. Sometimes it's just about choosing to step outside of your normal cycle, that normal routine that you're in, and even if it's just for a moment. So when I was going through my last breakup a couple of years ago, one of the things that could calm my mind and give me the reset I needed quick, fast and in a hurry were morning and afternoon walks. So I urge you to try to take a 10 minute morning walk without your phone. No podcast, no music, just fresh air in your thoughts. Or maybe you can press pause by taking an actual lunch break, not eating while you answer emails, not trying to cross one more thing off your to do list, just eating your food, enjoying that meal and being present in the moment. Sitting, breathing, eating and taking in what is around you and letting the world keep spin and let letting the world keep spinning without you for a second. I've been doing this again lately and I really missed it. For lunch I will take my meal prep or my sandwich from Firehouse Subs because I beat y' all. I eat Firehouse subs like two to three times a week. It's honestly insane. But their sandwiches are so good. Oh My gosh. But anyways, because I've been loving that lately, I will go onto my rooftop and I eat my food in the sun. Now, y' all know I serve the most high God, but there is some truth to sitting in the sun to recharge. Soaking in those rays. Getting some vitamin D can really help you get through the day. And I've also started noticing how refreshing it is to have a Sunday with nothing planned. Sundays are typically when I record this podcast, and I would love to change that really soon. But Sundays are like an actually an actual nothing day. No errands, no work, and not even a productive rest. Just rest after church, of course. And I get it some Sometimes it feels strange, like you're being lazy, but honestly, I think our bodies have been craving that kind of pause longer than we've realized. And while we're actually on the topic, let's stop considering lazy a derogatory term. Because it's not. We need a lazy day every now and then. The word lazy literally means unwilling to work or use energy. And sometimes that is the exact choice that your body is asking you to make. To choose to be still, to choose not to be on, to choose not to produce or perform, to just exist as you are. And what's wild about this is when you finally give yourself permission to lean into that kind of day, the kind where nothing is expected of you. You realize just how loud the world is all the time and how quiet you've been with yourself. Now maybe pressing pause on your day is as simple as saying no, even though technically your calendar is open. That's something that I have truly been trying to practice lately. Because if people will like say, hey, are you free at this time? And there's nothing on my calendar? I will feel the need to say yes, my schedule is free. But not filling your space just because there is space. Sometimes space needs to be just that space. And it's been a huge game changer for me to take a beat and say, well, I can't do it at this time. And leaving it at that. You don't have to tell people no more than that. We also over explain our availability. Sometimes when we feel a little bit of guilt, we don't need to do all that. But things like taking yourself out to coffee, sitting in the corner of the little shop with your favorite drink, not rushing, not posting nothing, not scrolling on Instagram, just being. That is also a break. Maybe a solo movie, a slow dinner that you didn't have to cook, laying on your floor doing nothing y' all, all of these things count. It really depends on what you need and what feels like rest to you. But since it's almost summer, I've been sitting out on my balcony again. I went out there and cleaned it all up like last month and I love it y' all. It's warm. The hummingbirds have come by to visit. Meanwhile, one laid some eggs on my balcony and two baby hummingbirds grew and one is still in the nest. And I've been keeping my updated about looks like it's about to fly off any day, but I've watched that entire process. I also see that my plants are doing well. I catch a little breeze, I hear my neighbors talking, airplanes passing by and it all reminds me that the world keeps spinning regardless of what Tyra is doing. And if I spend all of my time doing, I'm going to miss the present moment for what it is. And in 10 to 20 years, when my husband or my kids or anybody asked me what it was like to live on my own in LA in my super cute foodie themed apartment, I won't remember because I didn't take the time to truly take it all in and be present. So I say all of this to say rest doesn't always mean sleep. Sometimes it is beauty, Sometimes it's quiet. It's feeling the way your chest rises when you breathe in and knowing that's enough for right now. It's choosing presence over productivity over perfection. Not because you earned it, but because you need it. And that's the shift that is the entire point when people ask me what I did yesterday. Sometimes I genuinely just don't remember. And that's not because it wasn't a good day. It's because I've been doing entirely too much, moving too fast and not living in the moment enough. And it's a sign. It's a signal that somewhere along the way I started measuring my days by output and not by presence. These are the best years of my life and I can't recall what I did yesterday. You may not, but I find an issue with that just about our entire lives we've been taught that busy means important, that if your plate is full, you must be doing something right. But honestly, let's look at that for a second. Yes, there's the saying I can't complain about what's on my plate when the goal was to eat and listen. I get it. It sounds so good. It sounds grown. But I do think it can also be a little harmful. Because what's the point of eating if it makes you sick, what's the point of having a full plate if you're the one who ends up empty? We only get one life, y' All. One. And if all we do with it is fill it with tasks, projects, goals and achievements, but never pause long enough to enjoy the fruits of that labor, then what exactly is we doing? We are not machines. We are not productivity robots. We are souls in bodies meant to live, breathe and take in the beauty of this world that God created. And here's the truth. You can get more done when you take on less. This is a sentiment that so many billionaires live by, but that requires us to be intentional. It requires us to be selective, thoughtful about what we're carrying and why we're carrying it. Everything can't be urgent. Everything can't get all of you. Every opportunity does not deserve your yes, sometimes the most radical act of self love is putting something down. Not because you're weak, not because you're quitting, but because you're choosing your peace. You're choosing your future. You're choosing to trust that what's meant for you will not pass you, and it won't require require you to destroy yourself to keep it. So y' all, as we step into this summer, I invite you to check your plate. Not with guilt, not with shame, but with grace. Take some inventory. Is everything on there truly nourishing you? Is it lighting you up? Or are you just trying to prove that you can handle it all? Because baby, that's ego. You don't have to carry everything you were never meant to. So take a breath, take a break and let that be enough. Okay y' all, I have a confession to make. I am a hot sleeper. My body be running so hot y' all. And sometimes it has me tossing and turning all night. First I'm too hot because I'm under the covers. Then I get too cold because I didn't took them off of me. I'm flipping my pillow every 10 minutes to find the cool side and eventually I just end up with one foot in and one foot out to regulate my body. But I recently realized that it's not just me, it's also my bedding. Heat trapping sheets and duvets are a recipe for a restless night. And no matter how tired you are, I cannot get jiggy with it. Now I already upgraded my bed. I told y' all. I got the avocado green mattress. And with the warmer weather approaching us, it has given me the push to give their bedding a try. It is time for our fun closing segment. And today we have something that is a little different. We're doing what's on repeat. And this is where I share something that has been on repeat for me lately. Whether it's a song, a movie, food, anything. Something that honestly just has captured the mood of how I've been feeling lately. And I will say this, I got two songs that I want to say have been on repeat. Y' all play these songs just about every day. And the first one is Girl Like Me by Jasmine Sullivan. Do y' all know that song? I know a lot of y' all know that song, but if you don't really know that song, I started listening to the. I started listening to this song back when, you know, I was first going through my last breakup because it was a lot of confusion around that. I don't think I ever really dove deep into that with you guys, but it was a lot of confusion around why we broke up. I didn't really understand why he didn't want to be with me. And, you know, all of that stuff. We didn't fight or anything. So it was just very weird. I've never been in a situation like that. But the song goes, oh God, I'm not gonna sing it. But he go, I made a profile on Tinder since you left me to be with her. And it's just talking about, like, how the person must have wanted something different. And, well, Jasmine Sullivan is saying you must have wanted something different. And you don't know. She doesn't know what's going on. Like why do you always go for these other girls? Why can't it be me? Why don't you love me? And I don't even know why you don't love me. Like, you couldn't even give me that. And I just felt so seen in these lyrics. And first of all, Jasmine Sullivan is dope, and her is a feature on there. I also like her verse on it. But anyways, go listen to the song. Okay. So her says, y' all be making us sad. And they. And then say, y' all don't know why we're mad. It's so much easier to sing this, but I'm not gonna sing because I can't sing. So we start acting like we don't care because y' all be taking us there. Cause you don't want us no more. And it breaks us to the core. And I'm just like. I feel that. I feel that in my bones. I feel it in my bones. It's a really good song. It really is. And another song that's been on repeat for me because I did go to the Beyonce concert. It is a song from a Cowboy Carter album, and it's Levi's jeans. Oh, my gosh. I love that song so much, y' all. It's just the. It starts like, you call me pretty little thing. Yeah, I. I don't. I can't sing anyways. Those are the songs that bit on repeat for me. Outside of that, other things that have been on repeat for me are. Let's see. I've been baking a lot lately as well, and I've also been talking more with family. And speaking of that, like I've said in the episode, I'm going home for a little while. I needed a little breaky break to go home and, you know, just fill my cup, be around family. I am very family oriented, and I didn't plan on going home this summer, but some. Something in me, like I said, I've been crying a lot, y' all. I haven't been crying because I've been sad. I've been crying because something in me has been empty, right? And I realized that I just need to go home, spend some time with my family, hug on them, love on them a little bit, and just feel that cup. So I will be home for two weeks. And I also mentioned at the top of the episode that summer will be a little different. During the summer, a lot of podcasts go on hiatus because across the board, podcast numbers go down. But I'm not gonna leave y' all high and Dry. Because people still listen to our podcast. Our numbers have dropped, so y' all please keep listening. But during the summer, numbers typically drop and a lot of people just do rewinds. But I didn't want to do that. I want to give y' all some new episodes so you can still be excited about Affirmations for black Girls. So we're going to have a lot of fun. We also started our exclusive membership, which will feature a lot of additional assets and things for you guys. Some additional episodes, some voice notes, all types of stuff. And it's called the Refill Room. I mentioned it in our last podcast episode. It is paid and it will just give you guys, like bonus pep talk episodes. A lot of resources that I'm unable to really get together for every single podcast episode. And it's $3 a week or $8 a month. The $8 a month is definitely a better deal, so pay attention to that. But I would love for you guys to join. We'll also be doing some virtual happy hours where we get to connect, make a little mocktail, a little cocktail, and really connect, like in real time with one another. And I just, I just wanted to create a space where we could have more meaningful value and, you know, constantly pour into ourselves, just like we're saying now, pour back into ourselves with more intentional and soul filled content. So that's why it's called the Refill Room, because can I get a refill? This is why I don't be seeking on the podcast, y' all, because I know I sound crazy, but anyways, the link to join the Refill Room is down below. The first thing that I'm talking about over there is I mentioned this last time, but, y' all, I'm just giving you my thoughts on my college boyfriend, which I've talked about on the podcast before, y' all. He just got engaged and it wrecked me. It definitely did. But we're gonna talk about that over there because some things I don't really want to have just available to just find on the Internet, especially something that's that personal. So if you would like to have more and regular conversations and see where I'm at in real time before I have completely worked through things, we may have so many overlapping experiences. That is the purpose of the Refill Room. So if you have it in you and you want to invest in yourself a little bit more, join the Refill Room. It'll definitely help affirmations for black girls out a lot more and we can learn and grow and fellowship together. Together. Over there in that space. But I'm super excited about what's to come with that as well. So again, the link to join that exclusive community is down below in the show notes and you can join it anytime. You can also cancel at any time. But with that being said, y' all, I'mma go ahead and get on up out of here because I. Well, first, before I get them all out here, I want to say with the summer episodes, they may be a little shorter. And with the breaks that I said mentioned, we'll be doing rewind episodes, so there won't be a week where you don't get anything. We've already planned that out to make sure that you guys have things throughout the summer. But the goal for summer, I really want you guys to get out and do things. If you're listening to the podcast, you have time to, like, listen to it while you take a walk or while you're doing something else. Definitely do that. Because summer is this time to be less on our screens, be outside, touch some grass, all of the things. But I do know I've received so many beautiful messages that this podcast is a lifeline for a lot of you. And I was not about to leave y' all high and dry. I just could not do that because I mess with y' all heavy. Okay, so with that being said, y' all, that is all that I have for you guys today. We do have a pep talk Wednesday, going live on Wednesday. So make sure you tune in for that. And I will also see you guys again next week for another full length episode. Make sure that you subscribe to the podcast and also our YouTube channel so we can start doing more video content over there. Leave us a rating and review. And thank you so much for listening. This is affirmations for black girls.

Affirmations for Black Girls Podcast: Episode 419 Summary
Title: Pressing Pause & Learning to Reset. The Art of Slowing Down to Speed Up. The Power of Intentional Rest
Host: Tyra The Creative
Release Date: June 17, 2025
In Episode 419 of Affirmations for Black Girls, host Tyra The Creative delves into the transformative power of intentional rest and the art of slowing down to ultimately accelerate personal growth and productivity. This episode serves as a compassionate reminder that rest is not a luxury but a fundamental right essential for holistic well-being.
[02:15] Tyra: "Just about our entire lives we've been trained to equate busy with important hustle with success and being tired with being worthy."
Tyra challenges the pervasive societal notion that constant busyness and hustle are synonymous with success and self-worth. She introduces the idea that pausing doesn’t equate to quitting but is rather a strategic move to recharge and realign oneself.
[10:45] Tyra: "The first time I ever experienced burnout was when I was in culinary school... I had boxes to check."
Tyra shares her personal experience with burnout during her time in culinary school, highlighting the physical and emotional toll of overcommitment. This honest recounting underscores the episode's central theme: the necessity of recognizing and addressing burnout through intentional rest.
[15:30] Tyra: "Soul rest is not just sleeping, but the rest that feeds you, that quiets you, that brings you back home to yourself."
Tyra elaborates on the concept of soul rest, emphasizing activities that nurture the inner self, such as silence, creative outlets like journaling, and simple pleasures like baking for personal joy. She advocates for creating space to breathe and exist without the pressure to perform or produce.

[09:00] Tyra: "You can't just throw everything into the pot at the same time and expect it to be good to go in 15 minutes."
Using the metaphor of cooking gumbo, Tyra illustrates how allowing time for things to “simmer” parallels the need for patience and gradual progress in personal growth. Rushing processes can lead to subpar outcomes, whereas deliberate pacing enhances depth and quality.
[21:40] Tyra: "Resetting means realigning yourself with what you need... doing less can actually help you achieve more."
Tyra discusses the concept of a reset as a form of realignment rather than cessation, advocating for periods of reduced activity to foster clarity and renewed energy. She shares her plan to spend two weeks in Louisiana to immerse herself in a slower-paced environment, emphasizing the benefits of stepping away to return stronger and more grounded.
[25:30] Tyra: "Sometimes the most radical act of self-love is putting something down... you're choosing your peace."
Tyra confronts the ingrained guilt associated with taking breaks, encouraging listeners to redefine productivity not by output but by presence and well-being. She argues that strategic pauses enhance overall effectiveness and personal fulfillment.
Towards the end of the episode, Tyra introduces the Refill Room, an exclusive membership space designed for deeper connection and support. This community offers additional resources, bonus episodes, and virtual happy hours, fostering a space for listeners to engage meaningfully and continue their journey of self-care and affirmation.
[43:20] Tyra: "We are souls in bodies meant to live, breathe and take in the beauty of this world that God created."
In concluding the episode, Tyra reinforces the importance of living a balanced life where rest and presence are integral to personal growth. She invites listeners to assess their own lives, prioritize what truly nourishes them, and embrace the freedom that comes with intentional rest.
Episode 419 of Affirmations for Black Girls offers a profound exploration of rest as a pivotal element of personal development. Tyra The Creative's candid storytelling and practical advice provide listeners with both inspiration and actionable strategies to incorporate intentional rest into their lives.
