Okay, let me ask y' all a question. When was the last time you got really excited about something small? Something like picking up a cute sticker sheet or one of the new Pokemon card drops? Or something like getting a new set of press on nails? Or snagging the last special edition book on the shelf at Barnes and Noble? Or even something like finding Le Creuset bakeware on sale at home goods. Has it been a while now? Let me ask you this. Why do we generally act like treating ourselves to little things is just for kids when it literally still lights us up as fully grown adults? Powerful. Few things are as powerful. Few things are as powerful as what is up, beautiful people? Welcome back to another pep Talk Wednesday. I am Tyra the Creative, your host and virtual cheerleader for the day, delivering a midweek pick me up that you have been craving. So get ready for some encouraging words and a dose of inspiration to brighten your day. Ready? Okay. Society and adulthood have us convinced that collecting things is silly or childish. But that's where some of my most simplest pleasures come from. On account of three, I want y' all to name something that you have been collecting. Okay. One, two, three. Did you name something? Because I could tell y', all, baby, I have so many things that I like to collect. I think collecting items has definitely stemmed from my childhood, but I love that even as an adult, I'm able to indulge in that part of myself that finds so much joy in having a lot of the same things. So when we kids, it's something totally different. When you kids, you collecting like rocks or fuzz, you be collecting some crazy stuff. But now that I have big girl money, my collections are robust, baby. I love collecting a lot of different things. And I think for me, a lot around the word collecting comes from the joy of anticipation. I am so excited when I find a new item in whatever collection that I have because I have a few. Okay, let me, let me, let me start here. I should have started here. I collect a lot of different things, and as I got older, I started collecting more of those things. And one of the biggest misconceptions I feel about collecting stuff is that you have to do it every week, every month, you have to do it very often, or you have to spend a lot of money, and that's just honestly not true. So I'm gonna run y' all through my list right quick because I got a few things, okay, I collect, and some of these you might know, but some of them you might not know. And I'm gonna have some. I'm gonna show y' all some of the stuff that I collect as well. So if you're listening to this episode, it is also a video episode. So if you want to see some of the things that I collect, you can go over to our YouTube channel and watch there. But if you are commuting or you're doing something right now, just keep on listening on your favorite listening platform. Now, with that being said, the first thing that I collect, which is in my lap right now, are these pillows, y'. All. I have talked about these before on the show, but I collect fun food pillows now. You see this macroscent right here? I also have my avocado sitting next to me. And then this is my newest addition to my collection, y'. All. When I went home, I found a Tony Satch pillow. Look how freaking cute that is. I got this pillow. I was driving to Austin, Texas, to see my friend Daria perform in, like, it's something. It's a fitness competition anyways. And on the way, I saw that. That Tony Satch had a gift shop. So I was like, oh, baby. I got to stop there because I got to get me some Louisiana themed stuff. So it just looks. It literally looks just like a seasoning can. But I love collecting food pillows. I feel like it's just a huge part my personality, and this is something that I. I stumbled upon. It's a newer collection. It wasn't something that I said, oh, I'm going to start collecting this stuff right now, and went from there. I gradually said, oh, I got a collection. So if y' all ever want to see the whole collection, let me know, because I'll definitely take y' all through it, happily share all of that with you guys. Something else that I love to collect. I actually just did one, and it's in this. This frame as well. I do a lot of Lego sets. I think I've mentioned that to you guys, but here's my. The one that I've done most recently, this is the piranha from Super Mario. And I literally just did this as my artist date because I've mentioned to you guys that I'm doing the artist way with my best friend Bria, but this was my artist date for this week. I did my little Lego set, and it looks so cute, and it moves. And then here's the other part about it. Let me see. It also opens and it drops coins. How freaking adorable is that? Okay, let me put this up. Okay, now this next thing, y'. All, this is something that I have been collecting for a while, and it's one of my collections that is more. For practical reasons, I can't stress this enough. I think it's super important if you are the hostess with the mostest and if you love to make sure that you always have a gift for your friends, you need to collect greeting cards. So here is my collection. Everything is in this box. My friend Angelina actually put all this together for me to make it more organized. But I have anything you need. I have Christmas cards. I have black girl magic cards. I even have, like, some that pop open. This is from my favorite car brand, Love pop, and they're 3D cards, and they pop open. I've given away a few of those in the past. Here's a Halloween card. I got this when I was at Disney with my. With my daddy. But it is literally a Hocus Pocus Halloween black flame candle card. But I say all that to say this makes it so much easier for me when I need to make sure that I have a gift for somebody. All of these cards are already ones that I like myself, and I don't have to feel rushed. And I think that's really where this collection came from. And I was like, I need to have cars for every occasion, which I do. Look, this one is super cute. This one is from Target. Bought this a while ago. And then the last show and tell piece that I have for you guys. I. I also. Don't make fun of me, y', all, cuz I love this. And I don't know why I started doing this or what made me so focused on collecting these. I collect salt and pepper shakers, and these are the ones that I'm currently using in my kitchen right now. Look, I have a croissant, and I have a baguette or a piece of bread. I don't even really know. But this is my. The baguette is my salt, and then this is my pepper right here. I have. I always change. It's actually time for me to change out my salt and pepper shakers for the Halloween season. I have, like, cauldrons. I'll probably use those just for, like, a little a week, because I don't really celebrate Halloween. I just like to be festive. And for fall, like, after, like, when November hits, I have these cute little animals. So I have a fox and a squirrel that I absolutely love to use. But, yeah, other than those things, I also collect, y'. All. I collect aprons. I collect glassware. I love finding new glassware for my kitchen because I love to host. I collect cookbooks, Coach bags. If y' all follow me on Instagram and on TikTok, you already know how I feel about coach bags. Oh, actually, this is my most recent purchase. Hold on, let me show you. This is really show and tell, y'. All. So this is my most recent purchase. This is the Ashton Coach bag in Kyle print, and it has silver detailing. So I bought this one and I also bought a denim one in this same bag. But I say all this to say, y', all, if it makes you happy, if it gives you a childlike wonder, if it excites you, go ahead and indulge in it. Because we only have one life to live. Now, I know a lot of discourse around, like, collecting stuff can be. Well, I don't have no space. It don't matter what you collect. And it also, like, like I said, I collect greeting cards. I collect greeting cards because I want to make sure that I am proud of whatever card I give to a friend. So that collection is constantly being depleted. So I'm constantly replacing it and stuff. And that's just something that I like. So it doesn't have to be something that you're just keeping and you're just stockpiling. It really depends on you. I also collect stamps. I have been trying my hardest to find those spongebob stamps because I didn't see the release date until after. I have not been able to find those. But I collect stamps and I don't send a lot of mail. But stamps in themselves don't take up a lot of space. When I just went home recently, I actually bought a new book of stamps. It was the Marine Corps stamps, because my daddy is a Marine. Hoorah. So I say all that to say, y', all, you. There's a lot of different things that you can do with collecting things. Now, I will say that collections can definitely bring people together. I have found so many people that are like, oh, my God, love your pillows. Here are my pillow collections. And we've become Internet friends. You never know what part of your personality can connect you with people who are just like, you. And it also sparks discussion. I can't tell you how many times people come into my house and be like, tyra, what is these salted maple shakers? Whenever I have different ones, or even my pillows, they're like, oh, these pillows are so soft. Where did you find a tomato pillow? Where did you find a banana pill? And I'm like, well, actually, this is where I found it at. So I don't care how childish something may seem or how frivolous it may seem. If it makes you happy, I think you should go ahead and lean into it in the best way that you can. Because for me especially, joy is in the details. And if it makes you happy, why not indulge in it? Y' all know over here we're all about finding hobbies that feed you. And one that's been on my to do list lately has been cozying up with an audiobook. If the AFBG book club keeps you busy but you're curious about something different, maybe something thrilling and a little spooky for the season, I recommend checking out Audible right now. I've been curious about The Prophecy Season 2 Kerry Washington. Yes, that Kerry Washington is back as Dr. Virginia Edwards. And when I say this supernatural thriller has piqued my interest off the first few minutes, baby. And add in that the cast is stacked with talent and I just. I just might be hooked. I heard this new season is wild, y'. All. The fight between good and evil, family drama, and those haunting visions that just keep you guessing. It's got action, it's got heart, it's got suspense. And it comes in handy being able to pop it on while I'm cooking, journaling, driving, or while working on another cozy hobby. Evil is rising and time is running out. So there is no right or wrong way to collect things. Like I said, I have collections that are more practical, like my stamps collection and my greeting card collection. But then I have things that I just be wanting in the house, like my pillows, but they also serve a purpose. They are throw pillows and I sleep with them, cuddle with them, all of that type of stuff as well. But if you're like, okay, there are things that I like, but I don't really have funds like that. There are tons of low cost collections. The biggest thing here that I want to preface this by saying is I'm not saying, hey y', all, go spend your money on a lot of stuff to collect. I am saying that joy is truly in the details of life. And something that was super important for me when I moved into this apartment was to make sure that it was a space that I was excited to come back to. And for me, that looks like these fun pillows on my sofa, that looks like having super cute glassware so I can invite friends over and make drinks and stuff with, that looks like all of my appliances that I have that I tend to collect as well. That looks like making sure that if I do have a friend that is going through something, I am able to go into my space and pilfer through my greeting card collection to find something that truly matches that moment out of cards that I have already handpicked myself. Those are the things that matter to me in my space. So what matters to you in your space or in your life? That is what I'm talking about when I'm referring to collecting. I'm not saying do frivolous things and just collect just to collect, because for what? There's no real reason for that. So there are low cost ways that you can collect that you May not have thought of, like, postcards. I also collect postcards. I love a good postcard. I did mention that earlier when I travel now, I actually like to make my own postcard just to add a little extra touch to it. That's obviously something that I have to do, like, once I get back home. But when I'm in the country or the place, wherever, I do like to send postcards out to my family so it can be stamped and mailed from that location. But you can collect postcards, you can collect recipes, you can collect things like pressed flowers. Like if you're going on a nature walk, you can pick a couple of flowers that you actually like and then you can press them. You can collect thrifted mugs, you can collect. Let me think of some other stuff. Journals, different playlists. Like, playlists. That's like no money at all. Besides, you know, the. Whatever you pay for your subscription service. But the idea here is to just find things that you like that fit into your life, that just add a little extra happiness on top of the day, the sprinkles on top of life that fit whatever your means are. Because for me, again, that is something that is super important. I don't want to be living in a space where I'm always telling myself, no, not right now. No, I have to go it out. No, that's not important right now. Obviously all of this stuff within reason, y', all. And everybody's situation is different. But what I'm saying is this is your life. This is your only life to live. And we deserve to have joy in whatever ways we can have joy in. In our lives. And I really think collecting can also be communal, right? So you guys know there are things like swaps that you can go to. I actually saw this on Instagram and I could not go. But there was a plant swap happening here in Los Angeles. And what you do is you bring a cutting of your plant and you swap it with someone else. So you can then come and grow another species or another variety of plant in your own home. And I think that is so dope. And it's a great way star community for me. I actually just sold. It's been like two months now. I sold my baby. I sold my Monstera Deliciosa. It had entered its giant phase, so. Or it's giant form, so it got too big for my balcony. And I live in the valley and it's always super sunny. I didn't have a space for where the leaves would not get burnt. And I also don't have a space for it in my home that would be good for the plant. So I ended up selling it and. And the guy who bought the plant, I told him, please, please, please give me updates on it. So now we're Facebook friends. And he just gives me updates on the plant because I literally, I bought that in 2020 from Facebook market. This girl was giving away cuttings, and for the longest time I was updating her on how big it had gotten. And now it has now gone to another person and they are still updating me on it. So it creates community. When you are collecting, you never know what types of relationships you'll form from collecting things. It's also my thing is this having collections is also good for, like, show and tells. Because I know, like, back in the day when we was like second grade or whatever, they'll be like, it's show and tell. Bring this baby. I love a good show and tell. Our modern day version of show and tells is halls. Y' all know, like, they have like a shopping haul or my coach bag haul, whatever, where you show people all the stuff that you have that is a collection. You might collect lip gloss. Like, people like my lip gloss haul or. Or my shoe haul, all of that stuff. These are collections, y', all, just to give you more perspective on what it is. And I really think that having collections makes it really easy for someone to give you gifts that are meaningful to you and not just take up space. Like I said with my greeting cards, I love gifting things that makes me happy to give, but I'm also. When I'm thinking about these cards that I'm giving, what would they like? My friend Alexis's birthday just passed, and I ended up taking her out for tacos for her birthday. And I was looking through my cards and I was like, what would be the good car for Alexis this year? And I had one car that was like, it had nachos on the front, and the nachos were topped with guacamole. And it says something along the lines of, you're just like guac. And on the inside, the car said, extra, but worth it. Because you know when you go to, like, chipotle and stuff, you gotta pay extra for, like, guacamole. And she absolutely loved it. And then she was like, oh, my gosh, this is so. Because we gonna eat tacos. And I was like, see? You see, it makes it easier in that regard. It made it easier for me to gift my friend. But now when I'm talking to my friends about My collections, it's easier for them to gift to me as well. So my friend Janae, she went. Where did she go? She went on a cruise and she went to Mexico and she brought me a gift. She brought me some salt and pepper shakers back. Some themed salt and pepper shakers, because she knows that I collect salt and pepper shakers, and I absolutely fre love them. So now, anytime that we having a taco night or a margarita night, baby, that's the salt and pepper shakes that I'm going to bring out. So we can put salt, Salt around the rim of our glass or stuff like that. Like, that is what I love about collecting as well. It helps you build the person that you are, and it also gives your personality space to shine. Now, as you guys know, every single pep talk Wednesday, we have a challenge of the week. So this week's challenge, which is super easy, I want to challenge you guys to start or rediscover a collection that excites you. Maybe it's something new, like bookmarks or plants, or maybe it's reviving an old love, like stuffed animals or getting a full book series. Whatever it is, I want you to commit to finding or adding one new piece this week, and then I want you to share your collection. Share with us online at Affirmations for Black Girls on Instagram, so we can repost you if you post it to your story. Make sure that you tag us so we can repost it to our stories because we would love to celebrate your joy with you. And you never know who else has that collection because, like I said, I found so many friends that have these same pillows at their house, and now I just love seeing all of their content. So that's the challenge of the week. And like I said, it doesn't have to be something that costs a bunch of money. You can collect something that's antique. You can collect something that you can get from outside in nature. It just depends on you. You can collect stamps. I love collecting stamps. Right? But I want you guys to take a photo. Please do this, y'. All. I'll be telling y' all to take photos so we can repost you and we can share and all of this stuff. I need y' all to do it it so we can repost y' all on Instagram, take a picture of your collection, share with us why you love it so we can repost it, and so we can celebrate that joy with you as well. I'm super excited to see what y' all come up with. I really like, because you can learn a lot about a person from they collections. Okay, so a picture or a video, whichever one you prefer. Collecting isn't about the stuff itself. It's about the joy, the curiosity, and the memories that come along with it. It's about giving yourself permission to care about the little things that make your heart happy. As adults, we get so caught up in hitting big milestones, checking boxes, and achieving the next important thing that we forget how powerful the small, intentional joys can be. Now, your collection can be as simple or as extravagant as you want it to be. Baby, it doesn't need to cost a thing. It can be a pressed flower from a walk you had, a playlist that you made for yourself, a postcard from a friend. Those little things hold meaning, personality, and nostalgia. They tell your story. They spark your creativity and connect you to moments, to memories, and to people. So here's the truth. You are never too grown to get excited about something small. Let yourself revel in the details. Let yourself rediscover the joy in what matters to you. So start small. Notice the happiness that it brings you. And watch how these tiny sparks of joy remind you of who you are and what you love. Collect what makes you smile. Because the joy is not in the things, is in the way they make you feel. Now, with that being said, you guys, I'm gonna go ahead and let you get up out of here. I really hope this episode has planted a seed in you and just helps you find that childlike joy again in whatever area of your life you need to. I really hope this pep talk Wednesday really put a little pep in your step for midweek, and I hope the rest of your week is great.
