What if I told you that playing small is the most expensive mistake you made all year? I really want you to sit with that for a second. Think about all the times that you watered yourself down. The moments you swallowed your ideas in a room full of people who needed to hear. The opportunities that you convinced yourself you weren't ready enough for. The times that you chose silence instead of advocating for your talents, for your experience, for your value. Think about the version of you who hesitated to speak up in that meeting because you didn't want to sound too confident. The version of you who closed the job application tab because you thought maybe next time. The version of you who bit your tongue, dimmed your light and shrank just so you could keep the peace. Now ask yourself, what did that cost you? How many doors didn't open because you never knocked? How many rooms never shifted because you never stood in your full and complete power? The truth is y', all, when you show up fully and take space, things move. When you play small, nothing changes. Playing small has never protected you. If you really want to call a spade a spade, all playing small has ever done for you is delay everything that you are capable of becoming. Well, in 2026, this will be the year that you will stop asking for approval and start showing up like somebody who knows who she is. Powerful. Few things are as powerful. What is going on, beautiful people? You are listening to the Affirmations for Black Girls podcast where we focus on personal growth and cultivating a healthy relationship with ourselves. I'm your host, Tyra the creative actress, content creator and mental health enthusiast. And this is year's overarching theme was Big Deal Energy, being bold, audacious, and unapologetically yourself. And looking back, I can finally recognize that boldness isn't always about being loud or taking center stage. Sometimes boldness is quiet. Sometimes boldness is internal. Sometimes it's choosing yourself when nobody else is clapping. Yet there were moments this year when taking up space looked like advocating for myself in rooms where it would have been easier for me to let things slide. It looked like resting when I needed to, without spiraling into guilt or worrying about the check attached to not resting. It looked like removing myself from teams that were no longer set up for me to succeed in the way that I wanted to. It also looked like saying no, even when saying yes felt like the safer option. It looked like walking away from situations and situationships that didn't value me, trusting that better was on the way. And honestly, a lot of that courage came from believing, really, really believing that what God has for me will never require me to shrink, to contort or silence who I am. So before we dive all the way into our very last full length episode, I still have an episode for y' all on Wednesday. But our very last full length episode of 2025, we have to jump into our affirmation of the week. And this week's affirmation is I am the main character in my. Let's go ahead and drop in y'. All. I am the main character in my story. I am the main character in my story. I am the main character in my story. I am the main character in my story. I am the main character in my story. I am the main character in my story. I am the main character in my story. I am the main character in my story. I am the main character in my story. What does it look like to be the main character? What does it feel like in your story? Let's go ahead and say this affirmation one last time together and really, really mean it. I am the main character in my story. Ooh ooh ooh ooh. Just like any story, there is always a main character, one main character. Even in stories with co leads, somebody is always number one on the call sheet and the next person is number two, right? I want to say if this affirmation felt a little icky, it's time to check yourself before you wreck yourself, baby. If you're not the main character in your story, then where will you be? Because everybody else's story has already been cast. Their scenes, their wins, their dreams, their spotlight. You only get one chance to be the star. There is no understudy. There is no second take. There ain't even a second movie. For real? For real. If you want to say that. No one else who can step in and live your life for you. So being the main character is actually not optional, y'. All. It's the only role that you can't give away. Every choice you make, every moment that you take up, every dream you chase, it matters because this is your one shot. Your life is your one shot. So shrinking, hesitating or waiting for permission only robs you of moments in your story. It robs you of your energy, of your boldness and joy that those moments truly deserve. So this affirmation may feel selfish at first, but. But, y', all, we only have one life to live. We have to embody and embrace boldness because we deserve to take up the space that God gave us. That's where I'm coming from with this. The first step to taking up space in your life is taking yourself seriously, y'. All. You cannot expect others to see your value if you don't see it first. People tend to reflect the energy that you give yourself. So if you shrink, if you hesitate, or if you apologize for existing, that's most likely the energy that the world will mirror back to you. But on the other hand, when you show up fully, confidently and unapologetically, the rooms will start to shift, Doors will open, opportunities will present themselves, and people will start to recognize your worth because you have already claimed it and you walk in it with your head held high. Taking yourself seriously does require a few key practices. First, you got to prioritize yourself. Your time, your energy, your goals. You need to treat yourself like the main character that you are and stop living as an afterthought in your own life. You. We've talked about this a couple of times on the show, but as black women, we have been trained from the jump to care for everyone else and to put everyone else at the center of our lives. It's time to de center men decenter. Our parents, our kids, all of that. We're told that it is noble to stretch ourselves thin, to put others first, to sacrifice our peace for somebody else's comfort, whether it's our kids, siblings, parents, grandparents, or that raggedy man that we keep holding on to. Amen. We grow up believing, whether it's subconscious or Conscious that struggle is supposed to be a part of our journey in that way that our worth is measured by how much we give and that settling is just how life works. But the truth is, you do not have to live like that. You can show up fully for yourself without guilt. You can prioritize your dreams, you can prioritize your energy, your peace, your needs, and still be a loving and giving person. But the difference is that you're giving from a place of fullness and not depletion. The second practice for taking yourself more seriously is honoring your own presence. You need to speak, act, and move with intention in everything that you do. Everything that you do communicates your value, your tone, your choices, even the way that you walk into the room. People are always watching, whether you realize it or not. But the most important audience is you. So the way that you talk to yourself matters just as much, if not more, than how anybody else talks to you. And too often, we have been conditioned to downplay ourselves, to apologize for taking up space, to dismiss our wins and our needs for the sake of being humble. Boop. Get rid of that. We started to say things like, oh, I don't want to be too much. Or maybe I should wait my turn. Oh, I can handle it all. I don't need no help. That win wasn't that big of a deal. But if you do not honor your own presence, the world won't either. You have to be your biggest cheerleader. You are dope. Honoring your presence is not about being this perfect person. It's about showing up fully and consistently for yourself, whatever that looks like. It's about trusting that your voice, your ideas, your body, your energy, all of it deserves respect. When you constantly shrink yourself in your own mind, the world is going to follow suit. If you don't honor your own presence, why the hell will anybody else? The internal whispers of doubt or the sayings like, I'm too much don't just stay inside of you. They start to shape how you show up, what you allow, and ultimately, the opportunities that you give yourself. Notice I said the opportunities you give yourself. And the more that you model that respect for yourself, the more the world will fall in line and then mirror it back to you. Think about it like this. If you walk into every room like you're a guest apologizing for being there, the room is going to treat you like one. Because they're like, she don't think she should be here. Why the hell should I? But if you walk into a room like you own the space, like you're the main character of your story. And I'm not talking about that overly confident, cocky mess. It's not what I'm talking about. But if you walk into it like you own your space, everything will start to shift. People will start to take notice. They will see you for the powerful being that you are. Opportunities will start to show up. And more importantly, you will feel it too. Just to add a little bit of science to all of this, studies in social psychology show that confident body language and self assured behavior actually do influence how others perceive you. People are more likely to listen, to engage, and to respect you based on how you show yourself. And here's the kicker about it all. It doesn't just affect them. Your own brain mirrors the energy that you project, right? So when you show up with confidence, you literally start feeling it too. Science, baby. And the last practice that I want to touch on for this is trusting your own value. We gotta stop asking for permission or waiting for approval to take the next step. You are enough on your own. And your life only needs your commitment to yourself to move forward. So think about how many times you have second guessed yourself. Maybe I'm not ready or maybe I should wait. I don't know what I'm doing. That hesitation right there is costing you. Every time you wait for validation, you are ultimately putting your life on hold. Trusting your value means believing. Believing that you are capable, that you are deserving and equipped to handle the next step, whatever it is, even if nobody else applauds it. Even when the world is not watching. It's about showing up for yourself first and letting that confidence ripple out. They gonna catch up. Because when you start trusting your own worth, you make decisions in confidence instead of fear. You stop shrinking to fit somebody else's idea of who you should be. And you start stepping fully into the life that you were meant to lead in the first place. Your approval of yourself is not an option. It is essential to living the life that you deserve. You owe it to yourself to honor it. That's where the boldness starts. It's not about being louder than anybody else. It's about believing in yourself enough to take up the space that has always been yours that's always had your name on it. So let me ask you guys a couple of serious questions. Do your joints feel older than you? And do you really know what's going on inside of your body? Yeah, me either. Y'. All. Christmas time on high eight now don't get me wrong, taking up space does not mean being loud or overconfident. Like I said, it's about being real, even if it is messy or uncomfortable. That's what authenticity looks like, y'. All. What I have learned is the biggest barrier to showing up fully has never been external. It is that little inner voice that tells you that you're not enough. That imposter syndrome that whispers that you're faking it, that your accomplishments don't matter or that one misstep will ruin you, Right? But you don't have to be perfect to deserve your space Y' all know how it goes. Imposter syndrome will start to show up out of nowhere. And if you are unsure of what imposter syndrome is, it is basically a psychological pattern where we doubt our accomplishments and we have a persistent or internal fear of being exposed as a fraud or an imposter despite external evidence of our success. So in other words, it's deep self doubt or feeling undeserving of whatever it is, and it can affect anybody. Right? And it's not an actual mental health diagnosis. That's the actual good part. It's just something that all humans go through from time to time. And it's like hitting pause on your own success because you don't feel ready yet. And we have all been there dealing with imposter syndrome in some way. Hesitating to speak up in meetings because you think your ideas aren't good enough. Shrinking opportunities by not applying for that dream job or that project because somebody else seems more qualified, or you think you got so much more work to do to get there. Downplaying your wins, your promotion, your new business, your glow up just so you don't look too proud and too cocky or even feeling like luck and not skill got you to where you are now. Tell me, does any of that sound familiar? That is imposter syndrome in the flesh. And it can be sneaky. Now that we have identified the imposter syndrome, of course we got to fight it, right? So in order to combat imposter syndrome, you need to first name it, call it out for what it is, instead of letting it run in the background. Okay, I see what it is. That's that imposter syndrome again. Then once you call it out, document your wins, big or small, write them down and make it plain. Seeing your achievements in black and white reminds your brain that you earned this and that you were in fact built for this. And after you do that, next, you need to reframe failure. Mistakes are not proof that you're a fraud. They are proof that you are showing up every time you stumble. You're learning. And I like to say it like this. There's only two things. There's only blessings and there's lessons in life. No failure. So reframe how you look at your mistakes. And lastly, you can mentally rehearse your presence. So visualize yourself confidently taking up space in rooms that you want to be in. Right, so imagine yourself speaking up in the boardroom, owning your decisions confidently, or simply showing up unapologetically. What does that look like in your head? What does that feel like once you're doing that stuff now, once you visualize it, it'll start to feel more familiar and less intimidating and less out of character for you and more like a version of you that already exists. Your brain starts to believe it's possible, and then you start moving like it's possible. That's how confidence builds. Not from perfection, but from practice. And one thing that I want you guys to remember is claiming your space is not about being louder than everyone else. It's never been that. It's about trusting yourself enough to exist fully, even when imposter syndrome tells you otherwise. So I want you to ask yourself this. What is one situation where you made yourself smaller this year? And how can you reclaim that energy for next year? Listen, if you've been on your zoom this year, give yourself credit and give yourself a big round of applause, because adulting and making it through life is hard work, y'. All. Seriously, if you have done the inner work, you shown up for yourself. You have faced fears that maybe used to paralyze you. You've leaned into uncomfortable moments that the old you would have tiptoed around. Now the work is shifting. So for me, 2026 will be all about maintenance, for real. Keeping our big deal energy from this year alive and protecting it and letting it expand into what it's supposed to be. It's about stepping into the version of you who is not waiting for anything or anybody. The version of you that is stepping forward. It's about choosing your big deal intentions with clarity and with confidence. So here's how to practically shape that energy for the year ahead. First, we're going to visualize again. Visualize your new year. Don't just write goals in a notebook and forget that they exist. Go deeper. Create a mood board, that vision board, or even a big deal energy playlist that instantly snaps you back into the version of yourself that you know you're becoming. Let your imagination be a part of the process, because you need to see it. You need to feel it, you need to embody it. And whatever you create, you need to put it somewhere where you'll see it on your nightstand, on your bathroom mirror, on your phone wallpaper. Somewhere that reminds you daily of who you are and what you're stepping into. And also give yourself permission to pivot. Intentions are not commandments. They're guidelines. So you're allowed to adjust them as you grow. Maybe you thought you'd be in the gym four days a week, but your schedule can't handle it right now. Do two days, pivot, slow down, shift, don't punish yourself for being human. Big deal. Energy is. It's not about perfection, it's about staying aligned. And sometimes alignment can look like recalibrating your expectations to honor where you actually are instead of thinking about where you should be. Now. I was just talking about this on TikTok the other day. I personally feel a great pivot happening in my inner circle, in my group chats and even with my social media friends. Everybody is going through some kind of major shift. And honestly, I think it's because for so many years we were told to niche down, to stick to one lane, and to shrink ourselves into one identity so that we could be easier to understand or easier to market. But living like that creates an unbalanced lifestyle. And that's why I was never a fan of niching down. It forces you into a version of yourself that is small, that is simplified and almost two dimensional. And when you outgrow that box, you start to feel the friction, that plateau. And I think that's what the great pivot is. It's us expanding again. It's us realizing that we're allowed to change, we're allowed to grow, we are allowed to be multi layered and we are ever evolving human beings. So as we step into 2026 in a few days, let yourself pivot when you need, let yourself stretch when it's necessary. Let yourself become. That's the whole sentence, let yourself become. Because taking up space isn't a one time decision. It is a lifestyle. It's a commitment to showing up fully in every season. Even the seasons where you're still figuring out who it is you're becoming. Right? What does taking up space look like for you next year? In your career, in your relationships, and in your self image? Taking up space isn't something you wake up one day and you magically know how to do. It's a muscle. It's a practice, a becoming. And the beautiful part is that every step you take, every choice you make to honor yourself, to speak up, to say no to pivot, is part of flexing that muscle so it can grow stronger. Taking up space means believing that you're worthy of being in every room that you walk into. It means showing up fully for yourself the way you've shown up for everybody else. But this time, unapologetically, intentionally and boldly. So think back on this past year. The times that you hesitated, the times you swallowed your ideas, dimmed your light, or stayed quiet to make others comfortable. Those moments were not failures. They were lessons. They taught you that your presence matters, that your voice matters, and that your life is not something to apologize for. Maybe this year you've taken small steps towards honoring yourself, even when it felt uncomfortable. Maybe you have practiced setting boundaries, saying no without over explaining, or standing a little taller in rooms where you usually tend to shrink. Maybe you've noticed that when you show up fully, things shift. The energy, the opportunities, even how you feel about yourself. And yes, maybe that inner voice still whispers, you're not enough. And that's normal. We're human. But here's the thing. Boldness is not about being perfect. It's about showing up anyway. Boldness isn't always loud. Sometimes it's quiet. Sometimes it's internal. Sometimes it's choosing yourself, even when nobody else is clapping yet. And I think that is real courage. So as we close this year out, remember, your life is your story. You are the main character, baby. And there is no understudy, no replacement, no waiting for permission. The only way to honor this life is to show up fully, unapologetically, and boldly for yourself as God unfolds the pages before your eyes. Take the lessons. Keep the courage. Protect your space. Celebrate your wins. And let's all step into 2026 like the big deals that we already are. Because this year, you don't shrink like dust. You rise. Oh, y', all, you know what time it is? It is time for our fun closing segment. And today's closing segment is my highlight reel. Oh, I think this is very on brand, especially since it is the end of the year. I think it's a great time to recap on some amazing things during the year. So I wrote down some moments from this year that made me feel alive, made me feel proud. It made me feel more like the Tyra that I know myself to be. So how many I write down? I did 1, 2, 3. Oh, I did 4. Okay. So the first moment that I want to highlight is that I did a lot of hosting this year. I also launched Tyra's Table. At the top of this year, I hosted my first coffee shop. And I also hosted an ice cream shop. I love to have a theme and I love to turn my space into new things. So the coffee shop was called Tyrone's Rocker, and my ice cream shop was called Honey Child Ice Cream Shop. And at the very, very top of the year, I had a little supper club, just sharing the fact that I love to bring people together over good food. So that was definitely the first highlight of the year. And every. It. Re. Awoke. What's the word? Re. Awoke. Re. Awoken. It woke up. It woke something up in me that hadn't been awake for a long time. So it just brought me so much joy to have my coffee shop and have those little hosting gatherings at my space. The second one is also about food. Another highlight was the fact that I got to collaborate on some cookies with Junior Cookie in West Hollywood. And, y', all, it has been a hectic end of the year. So for November, we collaborated, and I really wanted to be able to do a lot more with them, like, a lot more filming and all of that. But the end of the year comes at you fast. But I'm so grateful that they entrusted me with creating a cookie flavor. We did. We actually did four cookie flavors. But my pride and joy was definitely the blueberry cornmeal cookie. It screamed Louisiana, and it screamed classic Tyra. And it was just so amazing to have something in a brick and mortar shop again. I have not worked in a kitchen or a bakery since, what, 2021. So that instant gratification of somebody purchasing your goodie and eating it in front of you and you seeing that reaction firsthand versus, like, now. I mainly do content, so I don't get to see people enjoy my food a lot. It was just so rewarding, and it just. It just filled my cup in a way that hadn't been filled in a minute. I thoroughly enjoyed that, and I would love to collaborate with them on another cookie, maybe in the spring or something like that. That would be so amazing to do. Number three would be spending my birthday at home. That made me feel like me. I told you guys back when I did my birthday episode that I hadn't spent my birthday at home in over 10 years. And when I went to Thailand for my birthday last year for my 30th, I spent my birthday. Well, I spent my brother's birthday crying my eyes out, because that's when I realized that I hadn't seen him on his birthday in over 10 years. And I just felt so bad because our birthdays are two days apart. His birthday is September 12, minus the 14th, and we grew up having parties together, so that is the norm. And when I realized that time had been flying so fast because that was never my intention to not spend my birthday with him, you know, I looked up and 10 years had gone by, and I was like, wait, why? Why am I doing this? So I decided to go home for my birthday, and we had a big old party in the backyard, and my heart was full. It was nothing flashy. It was nothing over the top. It was just my mama and daddy and them cooking some good food and my family showing up and us celebrating, me and pj, the birthday boy and the birthday girl. And that was definitely a huge highlight of my year because it's something that I have not done in such a long time, and I felt so loved, and it's something that I really want to do more often. It really brings me back to my roots, especially living away from home. I need those moments to reconnect to my source of. To the. To the root of who Tyra Gabrielle Morrison is. And that is heavily reliant on my family, especially because I live in a place like Los Angeles that can be so scary, so materialistic, and so out of touch. I thoroughly enjoy going back home to remember the things that are important and remember the simpler things. So, yeah, I enjoyed that. And the fourth one, I would say it's like a conglomerate, but the fourth one, y'. All. My daddy came out to LA to visit me in November, and I think the highlight here was having my daddy on Tastemade with me. So you guys know that I am a pastry chef, and I do a lot of work with this company called Tastemade. We do a lot of Amazon lives. And I have been wanting my daddy to get on one of the live shows with me for a long time, because in a lot of my cooking content, I will mention my daddy because he is a big reason why I bake. And people will be like, we need a dad reveal. We need to see your daddy. My daddy lives in Louisiana. I live in la. And I was like, okay, we have to make this work. So earlier this year in the summer, we did a crawfish bowl that went live on Amazon. All of these things are still live, so you can go and see them on Amazon. If you type in Amazon Taste Made Live, you'll be able to see. But we did a crawfish boil, and the producers loved him. They were like, we love your daddy. Your daddy is so good on camera, all this. And I was like, okay, well, we need to have him in the studio. So he came out here in November, and we did an episode in studio, and it was actually live, and it filled my cup so much because I am really never able to include my family, my loved ones into the work that I do. But I talk about them so much in the work. So being able to bring my daddy into this world that, honestly, he had a huge hand in creating was just so fulfilling. I. I want to include my loved ones in my work a lot more. Something that really fuels me is my roots. That is Louisiana. That is my family, my mom and daddy, all of that. I want to include them in the things that I do. It just makes me happy. So I would say those are the things that are in my highlight reel. And I really look forward to having my daddy back on some other content that that I end up doing in the future. Now the second question that I want to answer in this highlight reel is what I'm believing God for in 2026. This is something that's been heavy on my mind and I know I talk about it a lot at this point, but I really want to be the version of myself that welcomes my future husband into my life. And I am also really believing God for favor in my acting career. I've mentioned this before, but I really, really, really want to book an action adventure film. I think that would just be such an amazing thing. I'm really ready for the next step in my acting career. I have been doing all of the content creation stuff since 2017 and I love it and I'm grateful that I've been able to build a lifestyle around it. But I'm really believing God for my acting career to prosper soon and for my husband to come on here because. I'm just ready. But yeah, that's what I'm believing God for. So I would really love to know what you guys are believing God for. Even if you don't send me an email or a DM about it, just write it down and make it plain. What are you believing God for in 2026? I think it's very important to say those things out loud or like we've talked about in the past.
