Because if that airplane goes in the water, the radios are toast. That airplane is on land. Not only that, but you've been hearing this two nights now, three nights in a row. They're recharging that battery that the radio depends on. The only way she can do that is to run the right hand engine with the generator on it to recharge the battery. So she's not only on land, but the wheels are down, she's made a successful landing someplace.

Thrilled to be back and thrilled to bring you the second part of our Amelia Earhart discussion. Last week we spoke with Dorothy Cochran. She's a former curator at the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum who has studied Amelia Earhart extensively. If you didn't catch that episode, I highly recommend you go back and listen to it. On to today's discussion. There's a lot of discussion about what happened to Amelia Earhart on her fateful final flight. We talked about some possibilities last week, but there's someone else I wanted to talk to about this since he's written numerous books on the subject, he's done extensive research and he's visited the site where he thinks Earhart crashed. His name is Rick Gillespie and he is one of the leading investigators into the disappearance of Amelia Earhart and the author of one more Good the Amelia Earhart Tragedy. Since we covered Amelia's life in the last episode, I want to jump right into her disappearance. To recap, it was 1937 when Earhart began her attempt to fly around the world. She had already crossed the Atlantic solo and was a well known female pilot. On July 2, 1937, Amelia and her navigator Fred Noonan were on leg 31 of 34 for their flight around the world. They had gone 22,000 miles. There were 7,000 to go. She left New guinea at 10am local time. Her plan was to fly 18 hours east to Howland Island. I'll let Rick take it from here.

The disappearance, okay? The disappearance was inevitable. Oh, yeah. She was not competent to do this flight. And the planning was horrific. Coast Guard asks Amelia, how do you want to handle the radio navigation? You're going to need to use radio direction finding to find Howland island. So tell us how you want to do that. And she says, well, when I get within radio range of Howland island, my navigator, Fred Noonan, who used to work for Pan American, really good navigator, he can get me within a couple 300 miles of Howland Island. Once I'm within radio range, you can send me signals that I can home in on and I want, and that's how I'm going to find Howland Island. Oh, that's a good plan. And she says, and I want you to send the letter, a Morse code letter A on 7500 kilocycles. There's a problem with that because Amelia Earhart had already told the Coast Guard in earlier communications that her radio direction finder could home in on signals that were transmitted between 400 and 1500 kilocycles. And now she's told them to send signals that she's going to home on on 7500 way too high. And the Coast Guard gets this. And the captain of the Coast Guard cutter Itasca, who's supposed to send these signals, oh, I don't see how this is going to work. But she's, she's the boss. I mean, it's, it's her flight. But his boss in San Francisco, San Francisco division, also gets, here's, gets copies of these messages and they say, no, no, no, this is not going to work. You got to tell her what frequency she should transmit that you should be transmitting on. You need to tell her that. And Itasca replies to San Francisco and says, no way. It's not my job to plan Amelia Earhart's flight, because if I get involved in this and things go south, it's going to be my fault. So. And they were already highly suspicious of Amelia's ability because of her performance in Hawaii on her first attempt to fly around the world, where she wrecked the airplane. So they were. The captain of the test was, I am not going to get involved in telling her what she should do. So they let her go ahead with her plan, and sure enough, she gets in there close to Howland island, and she. She can't get a bearing. She can't get the thing to work, which throws the whole problem back on. Fred Noonan, the navigator. Now he's got to try to find Howland island without help from radio. Well, all he's got is celestial navigation, but it's morning and all he's got is one star, the sun. And he can get a line of position. He can get one line that runs northwest and to southeast at 90 degrees to the rising sun, a line that runs from 337 degrees to 157 degrees. And he can navigate to that line. But once he gets to that line, he won't know whether Howland island is off to his left or off to his right. And so he's going to have to explore up and down the line. So that's what they do. Amelia gets to where she Howland's supposed to be. She thinks and says, we must be on you, but cannot see you. But gas is running low. Not. Gas is running out. Not. Mayday, mayday, I'm out of gas. But gas is running low. Been unable to contact you by radio. And that's the other thing. She lost an antenna on takeoff from New Guinea. Didn't realize she'd lost an antenna. It's on the belly of the airplane, and she was unable to hear any of the voice transmissions that they were trying to sell her.

So, Rick, what is the first signs that she's missing, that the plane's missing?

When she fails to show up, the last thing she says is, we are on the line. The line of position 1-573-37 running online north and south. That's the last they hear from her. And they say, well, okay, maybe. Maybe she'll get here, maybe she won't. But by noon, and this is happening at 9 o' clock in the morning by Noon, she's going to be out of gas. And so if she hasn't showed up here by noon, she's down at sea. And that's what happened. She didn't show up. And the Itasca, the commander says, okay, she must be done at sea. We got to go looking for her. And they start searching and they're not finding anything. But at 6 o' clock that night, they start hearing radio calls from her. And how is this possible? Maybe she's floating around out there calling for help from a floating airplane. Yeah, maybe that's what's going on. So we got to keep searching. And this goes on that night, the night of July 2nd, 3rd. And then it happens again the next night, the night of the third or the fourth, once it gets dark and radio propagation is good, they're hearing calls that are on Earhart's frequency. People are recognizing her voice. They can't necessarily understand what she's saying, but it's her voice. And at that point, Lockheed, the manufacturer, says, wait a minute, guys, if you're getting all these radio calls from this airplane, it's not in the water. Because if that airplane goes in the water, the radios are toast. They're going to be wet. They can't work. That airplane is on land. Not only that, but you've been here in this two nights now, three nights in a row. They're recharging that battery that the radio depends on. The only way she could do that is to run the right hand engine with the generator on it to recharge the battery. So she's not only on land, but the wheels are down, she's made a successful landing someplace. She can't be ditched at sea. So in the meantime, Pan American Airways is also hearing these calls, and they're taking bearings on where these things are coming from. And they're saying the bearings indicates she's down near Gardiner island or at Gardner Island. She's got to be on Gardner island, uninhabited coral atoll about 350 nautical miles southeast of Howland. So trying to find Howland, she runs north, didn't go far enough, turns around, heads south, comes to Gardiner, sees there's a place to land, lands the airplane and starts calling for help. And this goes on several nights. Trouble is, the place she finds to land is the reef that surrounds the island, which is very flat and smooth out near where the waves break. You can land. I've been there many times. You could ride a bicycle there. She makes a successful landing, but it's a reef. The tide Comes in, the tide goes out. And in order to run the engine, the props got to clear the water. So we asked ourselves, okay, if this is what happened, we should only be hearing credible post loss radio signals when the water's low on that reef is low enough for the prop to clear. So to find out, we go out there and we survey the reef, we measure the tide, we can hind cast the tides. And we know almost moment by moment the water level on that reef. We plot that against the credible receptions of radio distress calls. And it's uncanny. For three nights, I mean, the, the tide gets slow enough, the signals start, the tide gets high enough to infer, the signals stop, and then they start again. One of the things you've got to keep in mind is that battery is the same battery she uses to start the engine, right? And he would be crazy to use the radio without running the engine because if she runs down the battery, she can't get the engine started to recharge it.

All right, Rick, what do you believe happened to Amelia Earhart?

What I believe is based on the documented facts we have. I'm not speculating. I don't know what happened to Amelia Hart except what the documented facts. The radio logs, the letters, the measurements, the forensic work tells, and there is no mystery. Amelia Earhart landed safely on the reef at Gardner Island. Now, Nikumaroro was there for about five days before the airplane was washed into the sea by rising tides and surf, leaving Earhart literally marooned on a desert island. Noonan probably died, went into the ocean with the airplane. He was, he was hurt somehow. We know that from the radio calls. But Earhart survived for up to two months at a campsite. And I can tell you what she ate and how much she ate. We found artifacts.

So why was no one able to find her there? Why was no one able to go there and find her?

This is not a new theory. This is what the Navy thought happened, that she landed at Gardiner Island. So that's why they sent a battleship from Gardner, Oahu, the USS Colorado to. And they did this immediately. July 2nd, they start hearing these radio calls. We gotta get some airplanes down there. They had a battleship with three float planes on it. They send Colorado down there to fly over the island and, and see her. And we think rescue gonna rescue her. Trouble is, that's 2,000 miles and it took Colorado a week to get there. By the time Colorado gets there, the post office radio signals have stopped because the airplane's now washed into the ocean. When Earhart came up over the island on July 2, the tide was out. The reef looked like a Runway. That's why she landed there. It looked safe. When the Navy flew over the island a week later on that morning, the side happened to be in. So they look down. They don't see anything that looks like a Runway. All they see is surf. They can't see the airplane. It's hidden under the surf. It's washed over the air. They look down and they say, well, if all those radio calls were legitimate, there had to be an airplane here. And there's no airplane here. Although it does look like somebody was here recently and probably just natives harvesting coconuts. Nobody here. All those radio calls must have somehow been bogus hoaxes, misunderstandings. And the rest of the Navy search took place in open ocean looking for floating wreckage. Life wrapped, never found anything, and ultimately concluded that she has simply crashed and sank and nobody had a chance to find her. In fact, they had left her. There had been no native work party there. What they saw as recent habitation was something she left there, but they didn't recognize it. They didn't have enough information. They drew conclusions they shouldn't have made, crossed the place off after half an hour of taking a look at it, and they left her there to die. And she lasted for a couple months before she died of unknown causes, maybe more likely blood poisoning from an injury on the coral.
