Jella
Jella kept her eye on the clock, counting down the minutes until 1am and the end of her shift. She couldn't wait to get to bed. Jella and her teammates began to gather their things to leave, but their team leader told them not so fast. Everyone needed to go out to the yard.
Co-worker
They just said that it was a meeting with the boss, the team leader and the translator.
Jella
With the boss, the team leader and the translators. This was never good news. Jella and her nine co workers made their way outside. The yard was kind of like a quad on a college campus, except with the guards around it gave more prison yard vibes. They lined up five in each row. Jella stood at the front of the line. She looked around. Two story concrete buildings all painted in a stark shade of white. Glaring fluorescent lights pouring out of the windows and doors. On the first floor was where they spent long hours, day and night scamming. On the second was where they slept in cheap metal bunk beds. The roofs were studded with floodlights that only added to the prison feel. She looked down at the concrete beneath her feet. Such a sad contrast to the adventures on Thai beaches she thought she'd be having when she first met Charlie. A hush spread through the group as the boss began to speak. Beside him was a team leader and two translators. The boss started with an announcement. They were changing up the payment structure. It would now be tiered based on how much they were able to scam.
Co-worker
If you have 5 to 7 people scam, your salary is $700 and if you have a bigger amount like 20,000 IUSD scam, they will give you 1000 USD salary plus your commission.
Jella
That'd Be great if you were good at scamming.
Co-worker
But if you did not scam, you will only get $300.
Jella
But if you were like Chella, this was terrible news. Jella was awful at scamming. Like, truly awful. She'd never gotten good at the dirty talk. She'd only gotten three clients to take it to video chat. But none of them were successfully blackmailed. She'd been moved over to another group with a new assignment. Scam people into buying things from a fake Amazon store. That hadn't gone any better. So she'd been sent to yet another group. This time, someone else was doing the scamming. Jella just served as a warm body on camera for video calls.
Co-worker
Just like to see that you are real. You are not fake.
Jella
Her co workers would tell her what to say. And using an AI filter to alter her face, Jella would deliver her lines to the target. She didn't like doing this either. And now she was being told that her already meager salary would be tied to her poor performance. Jella's anxiety shot through the roof. But that wasn't all. Her team leaders told them there would be harsher consequences for not meeting quota.
Co-worker
They will lessen the food like that.
Jella
No quota, no food.
Co-worker
You will be punished to duck walk inside the field for 20 times.
Jella
Duck walking? Where grown adults are forced to squat and walk across the field while everyone watched. It was humiliating. She did not want to do this. All Jella could think about was how much she fucking hated this place. How angry she was at Charlie. How desperately she wanted to get out. And then one more update.
Co-worker
They announced that by next month we will be transferring to a different compound.
Jella
A different compound. Jella was in a full on panic now as her bosses explained that they were being transferred to another company. This new company operated out of a compound next door.
Co-worker
It was a new built compound. It has another security guard with a bigger fence.
Jella
Jella was freaking out. She'd heard rumors about this other compound.
Co-worker
They are hurting. They are paddling the person.
Jella
Jella had heard they beat their workers with electric batons and paddles to punish those that didn't meet quota. With her track record, Jella knew she was doomed.
Co-worker
What if I will die here? So I need to leave this compound before we transfer to that compound.
Jella
She had to get out of this situation. The one Charlie helped put her in before it cost her.

In the episode titled "Scam Factory," American History Tellers delves into the dark underbelly of a multi-billion dollar criminal enterprise operating under the guise of legitimate communication channels. Hosted by Lindsay Graham, this true crime narrative unravels the harrowing experiences of individuals trapped within a sophisticated scam operation, revealing the brutal realities behind everyday scam calls and messages that flood our inboxes.
The podcast sets the stage by exposing a vast network of clandestine compounds where thousands are held captive. These individuals are coerced into perpetuating scams, often under the constant threat of violence. The narrative is intricately woven through the personal accounts of a family grappling with the nightmare of losing their loved ones to this merciless operation.
At the heart of this episode is Jella, a worker within the Scam Factory, whose daily life epitomizes the despair and hopelessness inflicted by the regime. The episode begins with Jella anxiously awaiting the end of her shift, hoping for a moment of respite:
Jella [00:58]: "Jella kept her eye on the clock, counting down the minutes until 1am and the end of her shift. She couldn't wait to get to bed."
Her anticipation is quickly dashed when the team leader halts their departure, announcing an unexpected meeting.
Jella and her nine co-workers are ushered into an outdoor area that starkly resembles a prison yard, complete with guards and oppressive concrete buildings:
Jella [01:26]: "With the boss, the team leader and the translators. This was never good news."
The environment is bleak, with harsh fluorescent lighting and the constant presence of security measures that reinforce the prison-like atmosphere.
The crux of the meeting revolves around altering the payment structure, intensifying the psychological and financial pressure on the workers:
Co-worker [02:44]: "If you have 5 to 7 people scam, your salary is $700 and if you have a bigger amount like 20,000 IUSD scam, they will give you 1000 USD salary plus your commission."
Jella sarcastically remarks on the new structure:
Jella [03:02]: "That'd be great if you were good at scamming."
For those struggling to meet quotas, the consequences are dire:
Co-worker [03:05]: "But if you did not scam, you will only get $300."
This shift not only demoralizes the workers but also heightens their sense of entrapment within the Scam Factory.
Jella’s ineptitude at scamming exacerbates her situation. Despite multiple reassignments, she remains ineffective, unable to secure successful engagements:
Jella [03:09]: "But if you were like Chella, this was terrible news."
Her role often reduces to being a passive participant, merely a "warm body on camera," further stripping her of agency and dignity.
The tightening grip of the Scam Factory becomes evident as harsher penalties are introduced for failing to meet quotas:
Co-worker [04:19]: "They will lessen the food like that."
Jella [04:21]: "No quota, no food."
Additionally, the threat of public humiliation through physical punishment looms large:
Co-worker [04:23]: "You will be punished to duck walk inside the field for 20 times."
Jella expresses her revulsion and desperation:
Jella [04:27]: "All Jella could think about was how much she fucking hated this place. How angry she was at Charlie. How desperately she wanted to get out."
The situation deteriorates further with the announcement of a transfer to a more restrictive and violent compound:
Co-worker [04:51]: "They announced that by next month we will be transferring to a different compound."
Jella's panic is palpable as rumors about the new facility surface:
Co-worker [05:20]: "They are hurting. They are paddling the person."
With the introduction of electric batons and paddles for punishment, Jella recognizes the imminent threat to her life:
Jella [05:15]: "Jella was freaking out. She'd heard rumors about this other compound."
Her anxiety peaks as she contemplates her limited options:
Co-worker [05:35]: "What if I will die here? So I need to leave this compound before we transfer to that compound."
Jella's desperation to flee is underscored by her reflection on Charlie, a figure who initially helped her but ultimately left her in a dire predicament:
Jella [05:42]: "She had to get out of this situation. The one Charlie helped put her in before it cost her."
Her longing for freedom is a poignant reminder of the human cost behind the façade of scam operations.
"Scam Factory" serves as a chilling exposé of the complex and brutal systems that underpin modern scamming operations. Through Jella's narrative, the podcast highlights the psychological manipulation, physical threats, and inhumane conditions endured by those forced into these illicit activities. The episode not only sheds light on the mechanics of such criminal enterprises but also emphasizes the profound personal toll on individuals trapped within them.
For listeners seeking an in-depth exploration of America's hidden criminal histories and their lasting impacts, "Scam Factory" offers a compelling and disturbing journey into the realities of forced participation in global scams.
