Beckers Healthcare Host
With the Beckers Healthcare Podcast and we are recording live at the 15th annual meeting. I'm excited right now to be joined by Christopher Douglas who is the Houston Market Chief Executive Officer for River Oaks Hospitals and Clinics and East Houston Hospitals and Clinics. Christopher, thanks for joining me today. Would love to have you start off by introducing yourself further, telling us a little bit more about your background in healthcare and about your organizations.
Christopher Douglas
Sure, sure. I have been in the field for the past 14 years. I work for Advanced Diagnostics Helper System, Houston, Texas based. But our reach is within the Texas field. We are a physician led, patient centric, for profit independent system combining hospitals, outpatient clinics, diagnostic centers as well as a mobile radiology branch.
Beckers Healthcare Host
Wonderful. Well, thank you for being here and I'd love to start our conversation with in the past 12 months or so, what is an initiative you've taken on that you are particularly proud of and what impact has this made on your organization so far?
Christopher Douglas
Sure. I would say our mobile radiology branch is called Advanced Express X Ray. Where we are we are able to provide diagnostics at the best side for long term care patients and that's patients that are at nursing homes, home health, hospice, rehab or even ltch hospital sites to where we're able to bring diagnostics to them. At the bedroom side, what that has yielded is other service lines coming into our hospital such as CTS, MRIs, surgical when we see fractures there, or even interventional radiology exams of G tube, peg tube, biopsies and central lines. Things that we're doing at the BEVSI tends to lead on other things which has been a great volume but also a great revenue generator for us as we continue to find ways to diversify our revenue streams.
Beckers Healthcare Host
Wonderful. And I'd love to see on the flip side of that, what do you see as the most significant challenge currently facing the healthcare industry and how is your organization addressing this?
Christopher Douglas
Easy. I mean, I would say funding, right? I mean all the federal cuts. But I also say, you know, reimbursement, right. Reimbursement from a general insurance standpoint is not, is not growing. Right. Labor costs, supply costs are continually increasing since COVID time and has always done it. And so for us it's all about how do we diversify our payer sources. Right. From working with the general commercial insurance patient to medicare patient to now really diving in into department of labor meaning workers comp even our long term care and having direct payers working with the nursing homes, the rehab ha hospital sites, the ltchs to where you know, they pay us directly for services that we actually provide. Also with correctional no care patients. Right. So for us it's all about how do we diversify our patient population to diminish the actual realm from the reimbursement going down.
Beckers Healthcare Host
And what is the biggest leadership lesson you're currently learning or have recently learned that you'd like to share with us?
Christopher Douglas
Sure. I would probably say focus on people, focus on the patients, focus on the employees, focus on patients from the standpoint on providing access to being available for them and from an employee standpoint is, you know, how do you take care of your, your employees? What, what employee morale things are you exactly doing? Things, things that we are doing. We, we have a employee appreciation event every single month, whether that's food truck Fridays or whether that's ice cream, you know, throughout the actual week. But most importantly what we do and what we learned over the past years is we provide complimentary gourmet breakfast and lunch to our employees every single day. And number one, that's a one less stressor for them to have to worry about and one less expense too. What we're also doing is we provide our staff free parking. At one of my sites, we brought them free valet or garage parking every single single day which to our competitors they are not able to to actually do that. Right. And so it's, you know, how do we continue to find ways to take care of employees but also take care of patients too?
Beckers Healthcare Host
Absolutely. And as we wrap our conversation here, I'd love to touch on workforce as this is an ongoing priority for health care organizations. So with employees growing expectations for flexibility and work life balance, how are you meeting their needs while driving efficiency? And can you share some examples of initiatives that have worked with us?
Christopher Douglas
Yeah, sure. You know, for, for us is from a nursing, nursing side. Right. How do we take away non required nursing duties so that nurses don't feel as bombarded and bogged down so they can just focus on the patient care? And what we've done, we put some of that workload on our tech and our CNA A staff putting some of that workload on them that are duties that are not really required by a nurse. Right. Number two, what we've also done is looking at remote work from some nursing standpoint, too. How do we allow some nurses, depending on their actual role, to do, let's say, two days on and maybe one day in a remote environment to where they are educating the younger nurses that may need a little bit of help? And how do we take care or take away the admissions and the discharge planning from the nursing side and putting it on other staff members, though.
Beckers Healthcare Host
Wonderful. Well, Christopher, thank you for joining me today on the Beckers Healthcare podcast and sharing these ideas again. We are recording live at the 15th annual meeting. Thank you so much.
Christopher Douglas
Yes, ma' am. Thank you.

In the latest episode of the Becker’s Healthcare Podcast, host Grace Lynn Keller engages in a comprehensive dialogue with Christopher Douglas, the Houston Market Chief Executive Officer for River Oaks Hospital & Clinics and East Houston Hospital & Clinics. With over 14 years of experience in the healthcare sector, Christopher provides valuable insights into his leadership journey, organizational initiatives, industry challenges, and workforce management strategies.
Christopher Douglas begins by outlining his extensive background in healthcare. He states:
“I have been in the field for the past 14 years. I work for Advanced Diagnostics Helper System, Houston, Texas based. But our reach is within the Texas field. We are a physician-led, patient-centric, for-profit independent system combining hospitals, outpatient clinics, diagnostic centers as well as a mobile radiology branch.”
[00:50]
Christopher emphasizes the integrated and multifaceted nature of his organization, highlighting its commitment to providing comprehensive healthcare services across various settings in Texas.
When discussing initiatives he is particularly proud of, Christopher highlights the success of their mobile radiology branch, Advanced Express X-Ray:
“Where we are we are able to provide diagnostics at the best side for long term care patients and that's patients that are at nursing homes, home health, hospice, rehab or even ltch hospital sites to where we're able to bring diagnostics to them.”
[01:29]
This initiative has significantly impacted the organization by expanding service lines within hospitals, including CTS, MRIs, surgical interventions, and interventional radiology exams such as G tube placements, PEG tubes, biopsies, and central lines. Christopher notes that these expansions have not only increased patient volume but also diversified revenue streams, enhancing the organization’s financial stability.
When addressing the most significant challenges facing the healthcare industry, funding and reimbursement issues emerge as primary concerns:
“I would say funding, right? I mean all the federal cuts. But I also say, you know, reimbursement, right. Reimbursement from a general insurance standpoint is not, is not growing. Right. Labor costs, supply costs are continually increasing since COVID time and has always done it.”
[02:31]
Christopher details how his organization is proactively mitigating these challenges by diversifying payer sources. Strategies include:
By broadening their payer base, the organization aims to reduce dependency on any single reimbursement stream, thereby enhancing financial resilience.
In sharing his leadership philosophy, Christopher underscores the importance of prioritizing both patients and employees:
“Focus on people, focus on the patients, focus on the employees, focus on patients from the standpoint on providing access to being available for them and from an employee standpoint is, you know, how do you take care of your, your employees?”
[03:35]
To foster a supportive work environment, his organization implements several employee-centric initiatives:
These efforts are designed to enhance employee satisfaction and retention, which in turn positively impacts patient care quality.
Addressing the evolving expectations for flexibility and work-life balance, Christopher elaborates on strategies to meet employee needs while maintaining operational efficiency:
“How do we take away non required nursing duties so that nurses don't feel as bombarded and bogged down so they can just focus on the patient care?”

These measures aim to enhance job satisfaction, reduce burnout, and improve overall workplace efficiency, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes.
