Hello and welcome to the Becker's Healthcare Podcast. My name is Chanel Bunger. Today I have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Sarah Matt, a brilliant physician, leader, entrepreneur, author, and a whole lot more who joins the podcast today to share insights in our background trend she's keeping in and a bit more. Dr. Matt, thank you so much for joining me today.
B
Absolutely. It's always been fun to be on the Becker's podcast.
A
Perfect. Well, to get us started out, for listeners who may not know who you are yet, could you please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your background?
B
Of course. So I'm Dr. Sarah Matt. I like to think I'm a recovering surgeon, so I started off 100% clinical and then moved into the tech sector early in my career. So I have been in leadership roles at lots of different startups, everything from eso, which exited to Vista, to Svato, which most recently I was their Chief Strategy Officer, focused on remote robotic surgery. But I also spent a lot of time at NextGen Healthcare, focused on critical access and patient engagement. And then I was at Oracle, both, both building out the OCI business for healthcare and life sciences and then helping with the starter acquisition, which was definitely a huge part of the excitement of healthcare a couple years ago. So these days I do a lot of speaking and a lot of consulting. My book the Borderless Healthcare Revolution came out in December as a national bestseller. And so I do a lot of work in the access space, not just with the government programs, but with how healthcare organizations and tech companies can include access as a key differentiator in their practices.
A
Thank you so much for that introduction. And now, as somebody with their hands in so many different pots, I'm curious to know, what health care trends are you currently watching, either in digital health, the government space, or just health care overall?
B
So it's spring of 26, the conference season has been in full swing. Everything from Ache to hims to vive, and now GTC is in full blast. And everything I'm seeing is pointing towards not just AI, but are we going to actually make it work. And I think that the biggest trend I'm seeing is AI governance. What it means for clinical executives, but also what it means for health tech companies that are in the space and trying to not just push implementation of their technology, but true implementation into the entire programmatic area of the healthcare ecosystem. So that means, hey, once we implement, it's not just SLAs around uptime, it's SLAs around outcomes.
A
Got it, Got it. And now, looking forward I'm curious to know, what are you most focused on and excited about going into the next part of 2026 and then looking back at last year, the last six to 18 months or so, can you talk about something that you've accomplished that you're proud of?
B
So first, I'll start with what I'm proud of. I'd say that bringing the health care access message to the masses in the United States has been a really big push for me. The borderless healthcare revolution really focuses on the five pillars of access, which I define as geography, financial, cultural, digital, and trust and knowledge. And I think that that's really resonating with both tech companies and health delivery systems, because everyone, you, me, anyone listening to this podcast is having a difficult time with their own healthcare access. And so what I'd say is that people are now recognizing that it's everywhere. It's not just them and it's not just specific populations. It's one of those things everyone can talk about. When it comes to what I'm excited about for the next six to 12 months, I'd say that it's really seen how the technology sector improves its ability to communicate with clinicians and build that trust. So we all know that the tech is the easy part when it comes to the new advances in innovation. And ultimately that's going to keep going fast and furious. We can't stop that one. When it comes to actually adopting it, bringing it into workflows, and helping delivery systems actually improve outcomes, that's the tricky part. No matter how amazing your algo is, no matter how amazing you're therapeutic, no matter how amazing your digital tool, ultimately getting that clinical backing and getting real folks that are at the front lines, utilizing your systems and bringing that value to patients is the hard part. And so again, seeing huge advancements in tech, I'm excited to see how we're now making hopefully new advancements in that adoption and trust.
A
Absolutely. You have a lot of things going on in healthcare right now. And now in the short conversation, I could tell that you're a very driven and impactful leader. With that, I'm curious, what advice would you give to other evolving leaders looking to have that same impact and drive in their careers as you have.
B
So if you've been under a rock, then maybe you wouldn't understand this, but you have to evolve. And so here in 26, I mean, right now, we're talking today, in March, it's been three months. And just in the last three months, not only has the market in health care and life sciences grown accidentally. But, but the technology has the implications, the trends. Everything's changing at such an astronomical rate that we can't, I'd say, rely on how we learned in the past. So what I'd say for any evolving leader, whether you're new in healthcare and tech or whether you've been in this ecosystem for decades, it's time to up your game. It's time to start learning more and more. So not only can you stay up at the times, but you can be at the bleeding edge and start pushing it in the right direction.
A
Excellent advice. Well, Dr. Matt, I want to thank you for your time today, but before I let you go, is there anything else that listeners should know?
B
What I'd say is that if you've resonated with some of the messages I've said today, I'd love to see you hit me up on drceramatt.com My primary platform is LinkedIn and I work with small tech companies, delivery systems, et cetera, every day solving these big problems. So we'd be excited to chat.
A
Perfect. Well, that's a great spot to end on. Dr. Matt, I want to thank you once again for your time today and for sharing your insights on the Beckers Healthcare podcast. Thank thanks, Janelle.
