The Beckers Healthcare Podcast and we are recording live at the 15th annual meeting. I'm currently joined by Vidya Cannon, who is the CEO at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Northern Virginia. So thanks so much for being here today. We'd love to have you start by introducing yourself and telling us a little bit more about your background in healthcare and your organization.
Vidya Cannon
Thank you. It is a pleasure being here and I appreciate the opportunity. As you said, my name is Vidya Cannon, I'm a physical therapist by background and I have been with our current organization, Encompass health, for over 15 years and I'm the current CEO at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Northern Virginia. Encompass Health is the largest provider of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals in the nation, with over 165 locations across the United States, including Puerto Rico. Being an industry leader, we care for more than 225,000 patients annually. And as part of my career development journey, I started with Encompass 15 years ago as a staff physical therapist and grew within the organization to become a CEO at the height of COVID Well.

Thank you for taking the time to be here this morning and let's start our conversation. In the last 12 months or so, what's an initiative you've taken on that you're particularly proud of, and how has this impacted your organization?
Vidya Cannon
That's a great question. We have several initiatives that we have really geared toward patient experience, patient outcomes and patient safety. But the one particular initiative that I'm very proud of is the leadership rounding. Really getting a lot of structure around rounding on patients to get their feedback on what we could do as an organization. Our goal was to have no patients leave our hospitals without being rounded on and we embody our values of cpr, which stands for comfort, professionalism and respect. And since focusing on this initiative for a while in our hospital, our NRC survey, which is our patient experience survey, points went up by 10 points. And our organization as a whole, more than 51% of our hospitals are over 75 on the NRC scale and still progressing. So that is one initiative that I'm very proud of because it's a commitment to make sure that our patients have an excellent experience while going through their recovery and rehabilitation.

And kind of on the flip side of that, what do you see as the most significant challenge currently facing the healthcare industry and how are you working to address this?
Vidya Cannon
Like most healthcare companies, we are also facing workforce shortage across the board, whether it's clinical or non clinical positions. And our company has really always stayed ahead in developing our staff. I'm a living example of that. But also there are several programs to ensure that we are progressing our staff and developing them in their career to retain them and have them grow within our organization. There are certain initiatives that cater their lateral progression that are clinical carrier ladder programs. And also there are tracks for vertical progression from an LPN to rn. There is an external program, there's an RN residency program, and there are developing future leaders that really focuses on leadership skills and clinically. We also provide assistance with CRR and certifications and recognitions once they complete that. So that is our way of really developing people and making sure that we are retaining great, talented workforce within our organization.
Becker's Healthcare Host
Absolutely. And as a leader yourself, I'd love to know what the biggest leadership lesson you're either currently learning or have recently learned that you'd like to share with us.
Vidya Cannon
As a clinician, it was very easy for me to really invest and dedicate myself with patient experience, outcomes and safety. But as I grew within the organization as a leader, it really dawned on me that my efforts should be geared equally toward our patient safety outcomes and experience, as well as our staff development and hearing them as well too. There was definitely a tendency for me to shift towards patient excellence without significantly focusing on our staff. And it felt like I was dragging everyone towards my thought process. But now having that inclusivity of understanding where our staff are coming from, what they need to be successful, what they think of excellence in healthcare, really helps me understand how to support them better. And there is a big difference between leading and dragging everyone towards excellent outcomes. I think by leading we involve constant commitment and dedication to build trust and that helps us be there for our staff and align our values collectively to progress towards excellence in healthcare.
Becker's Healthcare Host
And then finally, I'd love to touch on workforce as we round our conversation out since this is an ongoing priority for many healthcare systems and organizations. So, so how is your organization leveraging data and analytics to improve operational efficiency within the workforce and how have these efforts translated to a stronger workforce?
Vidya Cannon
That's a hot topic currently these days. The depth of the analytics have grown significantly in the past decade and our company also has embraced that perspective. We are now able to analyze clinical triggers with several hundred data points to equip our staff to stay ahead of certain direction. For example, we now have triggers that will tell us that a specific patient is on a high alert for readmission at the acute care hospital or they are on a high alert for a fall, potentially based on several thousand data points. That helps our staff really hone in on on their energy and time towards mitigating those high risk areas and also promote excellent patient safety and outcomes. On the other side of it, it also helps our staff development from a perspective of we can analyze staff's performance from an objective standpoint where we are able to see who are low performers or high performers or which areas they are not performing well so that we can align our tools and resources to support them toward performing better for the sake of our patients. And I think that is a wonderful development in the health care field.
Becker's Healthcare Host

Vidya Cannon
Thank you again. It's my pleasure.
