Let's start the story with who really matters here. On April 14, 2013, police officers responded to a call requesting a welfare check on Oliver Chip Northup, 87 years old, and his wife Claudia Maupin, 76 years old. Going forward in this episode, we will refer to them as Chip and Claudia because that is what their loved ones called them. Family members had grown concerned about the couple because Chip was a musician, member of a local folk group and and had no showed for an event that day which was completely unlike him. Upon entering the home, police encountered an absolutely brutal scene. The description of said scene lives in my nightmares. Chip and Claudia had both been stabbed to death in their condo in the very early morning hours that day. To get a picture of who Chip and Claudia were, Chip was born on April 26, 1925 in Grand Island, Nebraska. Chip served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a prominent attorney receiving his undergraduate degree from ucla. He continued working as an attorney until his death. Additionally, he was a musician for the Pewtah Creek Crawdads. I love that name and a founding member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Davis. Chip met Claudia at the Unitarian Church and they got married in 1996. She was born 5-15-36, was a pastoral associate and she was really active in the local theater. She was 76 years old at the time of her death. Claudia had three children while Chip had six children along with two stepchildren from a previous marriage. Their joint family included 11 children and 14 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren. Chip and Claudia were a wonderful Match. Both Chip and Claudia's families were thrilled when they decided to get married in 96. The Davis community was absolutely shocked by the gruesome murders and left terrified about who could have forged such an attack. This is an idyllic small town with a vibrant college community as it's the home of UC Davis. As a small college community, the town in 2013 had a very, very low rate of crime and especially violent crime, typically a murder rate of 0 to 1 per year. Nobody knew why this would ever happen until police were given a lead.

Okay, so, so let, let us tell you a little bit about what unfolded here and we are going to tell you more about this horrific crime scene with details that are unimaginable. And we'll give you a warning before we do that. But first, how did police get a lead in this and how did it unfold? Alvaro Garabe became Daniel Marsh's friend in the seventh grade at Holmes Junior High. I tell you the story about Daniel Marsh's friend starting in seventh grade at Holmes Junior High, Alvaro Garibe. So on Saturday, April 13, 2013, Alvaro nor Daniel's girlfriend at the time recalled seeing or speaking with Daniel. But they both remembered very vividly Daniel later telling them about the murders. Alvaro was told on Sunday, but not wanting to hear anymore, decided to smoke and then go home. Daniel told his girlfriend, on Monday, April 15, my dad's neighbor got murdered. We know that Daniel's dad lived two doors down from Chip and Claudia, although he was staying at his mom's house farther away the night of the murder. So he had wandered towards his dad dad's house. She said that. He paused, then said with an apparent pride, I did that. He happily described the events of the early hours of April 14, 2013 in great detail. She did not believe him and did not know how to respond. So she simply went with him to a friend's house to celebrate Alvaro's birthday. Alvaro went over to Daniel's house on the Tuesday after the murders, seeking more information about the murders. He just could not believe his friend could do such an act. He said it felt surreal. Daniel described the events on the night of the murders to Alvaro as the best feeling in his life. He then got several items out of his closet to show him, including the knife, gloves, ski cap, boots and jacket worn the evening of the murders. They were covered in blood. Daniel would eventually show his girlfriend the same items. Alvaro did not know how to respond. He was scared, so he said, that's cool. Smoked in the backyard, played Call of Duty, and went home. Daniel had also at some point made a detailed plan in writing to kill his girlfriend's ex boyfriend was something that really impacted Alvaro, that it showed a propensity for further violence and scared him later in June, in early June, Alvaro tried to tell Daniel's dad about the murders. So the murders happened in April. On the 14th, in early June, Alvaro tried to tell Daniel's dad about the murders, but his father did not believe him. So after driving Oliver Davis looking for a payphone to place an anonymous tip, he.
